Hennessey’s top 10 cars of all-time, celebrating 30 years of high-performance vehicle builds

It was back in 1991 that John Hennessey got married and modified his daily driver, a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 so he could enter the Nevada Open Road Challenge (finished fourth) and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and make speed runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats (setting a class record 177 mph) and the Silver State Challenge (overall winner, again averaging 177 for the 90-mile distance).

Even with all that, Hennessey and his newlywed, Hope, found time that year to start a new business (he had been in the environmental remediation business), and 30 years later, Hennessey Performance of Sealy, Texas, has produced more than 10,000 high-performance vehicles for customers.

As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, Hennessey Performance shared its “top 10 cars of all time:”

1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, entered Pikes Peak, two open-road races in Nevada and set class record at Bonneville

“Fly Navy” Venom 1000 Twin Turbo, based on 2005 Dodge Viper, won Road & Track supercar shootout that included a Bugatti Veyron.

VR1200, based on 2012 Cadillac CTS-V, ran 221 mph on Texas Toll Road.

HPE600 Corvette C7, 2013 model was first Corvette C7 to exceed 200 mph.

Hennessey Venom GT, 2010 Hennessey-built supercar that set Guinness World Record of 270.49 mph and reigned as world’s fastest production car from 2014-2017.

VelociRaptor 600, based on 2012 Ford Raptor pickup truck, but with 600 horsepower and capable of a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.2 seconds

The Exorcist, based on 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 but with 1,000 horsepower and 883 pound-feet of torque, 0-60 in 2.1 seconds, top speed of 217 mph

VelociRaptor 6×6, 2017 intro of a $350,000, 6-wheel, 600-horsepower pickup truck

Hennessey Heritage Edition Mustang, 2018 intro, based on Ford Mustang GT350R but with 808 horsepower

“At the end of 1991, looking back at that year of motorsport, I realized I’d learned the first rule of auto racing – if you want to make a small fortune in racing, start with a larger one!” Hennessey said in his company’s anniversary news release.

“To continue my passion, I knew I’d have to find a way to pay for it. So, I thought, if Carroll Shelby and Alois Ruf could make a living by building and modifying cars then maybe I could, too – that’s how our company began.”

In the beginning, working out of a rented garage with one other employee, Hennessey modified turbochargers and intake and exhaust systems for the 3000 GT, its cousin, the Dodge Stealth, and the Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7.

Two years later, he created the 500-horsepower Dodge Viper Venom 550 for a customer and also produced an aftermarket hardtop for Dodge’s exotic V10-powered roadster. Hennessey helped found the Viper Club of America, and his shop rolled out the Venom 600, and then the 650, which in 1997 posted a top speed of 203 mph.

By the turn of the century, the Venom 800 and 1000 models were ready, the shop staff grew to 5 employees, and the Hennesseys had 5 children, at which point John Hennessey retired from racing.

But while he left racing, he didn’t leave race tracks and in 2004 bought the Lonestar Motorsports complex, a drag strip with return roads that he turned into a test track with a 30,000-square-foot production facility (staffed in 2021 by 50 employees and by students at the Hennessey Tuner School). 

A Venom 800 won a 16-car supercar challenge staged by Car and Driver magazine, a Hennessey-tweaked Ford GT hit 234 mph, and in 2009 development was under way on the purpose-built Hennessey Venom GT, which a Chevrolet LS9 V8 would propel to more than 270 mph.

In 2012, Hennessey headlines continued with the Texas Toll Road SH130 being christened with the Hennessey Cadillac VR1200 hitting 221 mph and the Hennessey Camaro ZL1 running 204.

At The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in 2018, Hennessey unveiled his own 1,600-horsepower F5 engine, which was designed for a new Venom supercar scheduled to launch during 2021.

British Motor Show launches robot competition

Did you miss World Recycling Day? It was held recently and the British Motor Show used the occasion to launch a Car Robot Competition as part of its “Crazee Creations” category. 

So how does it work? 

“The Car Robot Competition will see showgoers able to create their own battle-style robots using old car parts, ahead of the show, to fight head-to-head in an arena, which will form a central part of the Show’s Crazee Car Corner, where you will find the weird and the wonderful, from monster trucks to modified cars,” motor show organizers announced.

“Participants are invited to design their very own robot, static or mobile, using recycled car parts. The robots will then be judged for style and creativity before a winner is announced… Teams are invited from schools, colleges, companies, or just groups of friends and individuals.”

The show’s Crazee Car Corner will feature a display of “modified cars, mental motorbikes, oddball caravans, upcycled automotive art and extreme machines. If you like the unusual, you’ll love the Crazee area.”

“The British Motor Show is about cars of all ages, shapes and sizes – it’s a celebration of cars in all their forms and the Crazee Corner is where those are taken to the extreme” said Andy Entwistle, the motor show’s chief executive. “That makes it the perfect place for visitors to create their own car robot creations and let their automotive imaginations run wild – and there’ll be some cool prizes on offer, too.”

Organizers are particularly interested in any vintage electric vehicles and in classics that have been converted to electric powertrains.

The event will be the first of 15 such one-marque or one-type of vehicle shows scheduled to be staged this year at the British museum.

2 Jet Z Hot Wheels car set for Carlisle Imports show

2 Jet Z, a home-built creation that became a Hot Wheels toy, will be among the vehicles featured May 14-15 at the annual Carlisle Import & Performance Nationals at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Pennsylvania.

Built by Luis Rodriguez and powered by 630-horsepower version of the 2JZ engine from the Toyota Supra, the car looks like a fighter-jet cockpit on wheels. In 2018, the car was selected as a grand national champion of such full-scale Hot Wheels cars and was shrunk to 1:64 scale to become a real Hot Wheels die-cast toy.

In addition to 2 Jet Z, Rodriguez will show his newest creation, Scorp*lon, a car inspired by one of Syd Mead’s vehicles in the movie Thon.

The Import & Performance showcase also will feature a Volvo celebration, 20 years of the Honda K-Series, 30 years of the Toyota 2JZ engine and 50 years of Opel Manta.

Forest Grove concours postponed

The 48th annual Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance has been postponed until July 17, 2022, the organizing committee has announced. The event is held on the campus of Pacific University, which has become a coronavirus vaccination site.

While many collectors’ cars are tucked away under covers in heated garages for the wet and snowy months, the sunny Scottsdale skies and warm weather make for a welcome reprieve from less fortunate climes. In fact, we saw plenty of great classic cars—top down, even—out on the roads around town while we visited for the annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction.

This year’s nine-day affair was Barrett-Jackson’s most successful auction ever, with more than $118 million in sales, compared to $106.8 million in 2018. The all-important sell-through rate exceeded 99 percent, as is typical from Barrett-Jackson’s aggressive no-reserve policy on most vehicles. No-reserve cars are guaranteed sellers and guaranteed commission in the auction house’s coffers. In the end, Barrett-Jackson found more than 1,800 cars new homes and registered more than 5,300 bidders.

We spent a 12-hour day wandering the seemingly endless rows of cars for sale, and there were truly all types here. From AMC Pacers to mil-spec Humvees, Ford Mustangs to Ferrari F430s, trailer queens to tractors, everyone is likely to find something they like; whether or not they can afford it is the only question. Of course, that’s not a concern for everyone, like the winning bidder who spent a huge $2.1 million for the bragging rights of scoring the first production 2020 Toyota Supra with VIN 20201. A crazy price considering the Supra’s base MSRP of $50,920? Not when you consider all proceeds went to charity, resulting in a massive tax deduction for a very lucky one-percenter. Here are several other vehicles that caught our attention as we combed the auction tents at Barrett-Jackson’s Westworld venue:

2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition | Sold, $533,500

While Ford auctioned off the first-ever 2020 Ford GT Heritage Edition for charity (it sold for $2.5 million), previous-generation Ford GTs—all eight of them—caught our eye. Three of those GTs were Heritage Edition cars, with the traditional blue and orange Gulf Oil livery. If you read our pre-auction coverage, you saw we recommended the highest-mileage car of the three as the one to buy. Why? With just more than 3,000 miles on the odometer, you’d be able to drive it a heck of a lot more than the other two, which showed 75 and 288 miles. We also figured the buy-in would be dramatically cheaper. Turns out the car with the highest mileage fetched the highest price, $533,500, while the 75-mile car sold the cheapest, at $462,000. Surprised? As The Who said, “I Can’t Explain.” Maybe this bizarro-world bidding will encourage the buyers of the lower-mileage GTs to actually drive them.

Fox-bodied Mustangs have been on our radar for a year or two now, and you could consider the SVT Cobra R the mack daddy of them all. Remember when 1990s Japanese sports cars were just used cars? So do we, and we all know that’s not the case anymore. With an immaculate, low-mileage 1994 Toyota Supra Turbo recently selling for more than $120,000 on Bring a Trailer, Japanese cars are firmly in the collectible category. This early S2000 from the AP1 series is the most desirable of the bunch with its 8,800-rpm redline and more playful suspension setup; later cars were stroked for more displacement, with a reduced redline and less aggressive suspension settings. With just 921 miles on the showroom-condition car, its new owner has a solid investment on his hands if he can keep from actually driving it—no easy task. Another Barrett-Jackson bargain.

It’s easy to look at the stratospheric numbers many collector cars bring and moan about being priced out of the market. Who would have thought some of the same cars we bought and enjoyed for a penance years ago would now be reserved for those with 10-car garages on waterfront property? Someday, maybe we’ll say the same about Cadillac Allantés. With a $60,000 price tag when new, genuine Pininfarina coachwork, and a 4.5-liter V-8 under the hood, this 20,000-mile Allanté from the second-to-last year of production was a solid buy. On the road these are still sharp-looking cars that turn heads, and although this one doesn’t have the wonderful 4.6-liter, 32-valve Northstar engine under its hood like the 1993 final-year examples.

From early American versions like the Ford Bronco and Chevrolet Blazer to Toyota FJs and early Range Rovers, there’s a buyer for them all. This is a Bronco from the first year of production (referred to by Ford at the time as “the first four-wheel-drive sports car”), and after all these years it still has its matching-numbers 2.8-liter straight-six engine under the hood. Making about 104 horsepower and paired to a three-speed manual, the previous owner gave this Bronco a frame-off restoration. We couldn’t stop staring at it. The price paid seems market correct—for now—and resto-modded examples with more modern powertrains are also increasingly popular.
