25. Toyota GR Supra Launch Edition: 3.9 Seconds
The aptly named Supra Launch Edition launches from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Even with its controversial underpinnings it lives up to the Supra legend, besting some highly respected sports cars. The 2020 Supra may not yet have the legendary status of its predecessors, but there’s no question it’s far quicker.
24. BMW Z4 M40i: 3.9 Seconds
Don’t write off the Z4 as just a comfortable convertible cruiser—it has proper performance chops. It hits 60 in 3.9 seconds, and is pretty terrific on a twisty road, too. You gotta see how close its performance numbers are to its Japanese cousin.
23. Polestar 1: 3.8 Seconds
The Polestar 1 captivates with stunning looks, a gorgeous interior, and a powerful hybrid drivetrain—one that produces 619 hp and 738 lb-ft, to be exact. With a twin-charged 2.0-liter I-4 turning the front wheels and two electric motors driving the rears, the Polestar 1 accelerates authoritatively, launching to 60 in 3.8 seconds. Just don’t call it a Volvo.
22. Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody: 3.8 Seconds
Easily the most powerful car we tested in 2019, the Challenger Hellcat Redeye Widebody’s biggest issue is putting all that power to the ground. It’s a real challenge to come off the line without wheel spin, but our best effort produced a respectably quick 3.8-second 0-60 run. Starting in second gear seems to do the trick.
21. Jaguar F-Pace SVR: 3.7 Seconds
Think of SVR like BMW M or Mercedes-AMG: Established to turn everyday vehicles into insane performance machines. In the case of crossovers, SVR applied its touch to the lovely Jaguar F-Pace, fitting a supercharged 550 hp V-8 under the bonnet. 0-60 acceleration comes in 3.7 seconds, accompanied by some tire chirp and lots of muscular V-8 music. 
20. Aston Martin DBS Superleggera: 3.7 Seconds
The DBS Superleggera isn’t the quickest car on this list, but it might be the best-looking. Outside it wears an aggressive interpretation of Aston Martin styling; the massive grille and elegant curves give it major presence. Underhood is a twin-turbo 5.2-liter V-12 with a whopping 715 hp. That helps it get to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds—if you can avoid lighting up the rear tires.
19. Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Carbon Fiber Track Package: 3.6 Seconds
Hellcat who? The GT500 is the most powerful street-legal Ford ever, spinning 760 hp and 625 lb-ft from its supercharged 5.2-liter V-8. Equipped with the lightness- and downforce-adding Carbon Fiber Track Package, this mighty pony car launches to 60 in 3.6 seconds. Even without the CFTP it’s damn quick; the standard GT500 does the sprint in 3.7.
18. BMW M850i xDrive: 3.4 Seconds
It may not be a true M car, but it still goes like one. The M850i’s twin-turbo V-8 gives it ample thrust, and xDrive all-wheel drive helps power meet the ground. Unlike a real M machine, handling feels distant and synthetic, almost like a video game car. Nonetheless it looks good, sounds good, and goes good too.
17. Bentley Continental GT Coupe V-8: 3.3 Seconds
Even after a few hundred miles on roads and racetracks in our Best Driver’s Car competition, we’re not sure if the V-8-powered Conti GT is more sporty or luxurious. A 3.3 second 0-60 time secures it in the former category, but its simultaneous serenity proves it’s among the best in the latter.
16. Bentley Continental GT Coupe W-12: 3.3 Seconds
The more expensive and more powerful W-12 version of the Continental GT is no quicker to 60 than its V-8 counterpart. However, by the quarter mile it’s clearly ahead, dispatching the 1320 in 11.6 seconds at 120.8 mph, compared to the V-8 car’s 12.4 at 114.7.
15. Porsche Panamera GTS: 3.3 Seconds
Porsche GTS models seem to be the ones to get, packaging serious performance for a (relative) value. That’s no different with the Panamera, which in GTS trim does 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. At the same time it’s as stylish, luxurious, and high-tech as you’d expect a sedan of this caliber to be.
14. Porsche Cayenne Turbo: 3.2 Seconds
The Porsche Cayenne has always put the “S” in SUV, and the Cayenne Turbo might exemplify that best of all. It goes 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, and does so in an eerily calm and calculated way. Emotion seems to be the trade-off for the Cayenne Turbo’s relentless performance.
13. Jaguar XE SV Project 8: 3.2 Seconds
With its huge wing, massive fender flares, and insane decals, it’s almost impossible to compare the radical Jaguar XE SV Project 8 to the comfortable sedan on which it’s based. Jaguar’s engineers somehow shoved a supercharged V-8 under its hood, channeling its 592 hp to all four wheels for a 3.2-second 0-60 time. The sound it makes along the way is truly glorious.
12. Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor Performance Track Setup: 3.2 Seconds
In Dual Motor Performance trim with Track setup, the Tesla Model 3 is a silent thriller. It zooms to 60 in 3.2 seconds, with just a soft whir from its motors, a bit of tire and wind noise, and, in the case of our tester, some rattles from within the cabin.
11. Bentley Bentayga Speed: 3.1 Seconds
Bentley’s gargantuan Bentayga SUV weighs well over 5,600 pounds, and in Speed specification produces 626 hp. The result is a physics-defying 3.1-second 0-60 acceleration time, even quicker than the ostensibly sportier Continental GT.
10. Acura NSX: 3.0 Seconds
Combining the best of combustion and electricity, the Acura NSX shows what’s possible from a hybrid drivetrain when sporty performance is the goal. Thanks to its instant torque and twin-turbo V-6 power, it goes 0-60 in 3.0 seconds. Hybrids like this give us hope for the future. 
9. Lamborghini Urus: 3.0 Seconds
Subtlety is the opposite of the Urus. With its angular supercar-on-stilts looks it’s a non-stop attention-getter, even if it’s not finished in one of Lamborghini’s crazy paints. Subtle doesn’t describe its acceleration, either, with a supercar-rivaling 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds.
8. Porsche 991 911 GT3 RS: 3.0 Seconds
This 911 is built to dominate road courses, but does just fine on drag strips, too. With its 4.0-liter flat-six shrieking and dual-clutch gearbox cracking off shifts, the GT3 RS hits 60 in 3.0 seconds. Around Willow Springs’ Big Willow race course, though, it’s just a blink behind the epic Porsche 918 Spyder.
7. Porsche 992 911 Carrera S: 2.9 Seconds
Porsche somehow improved the 911 formula with the new 992, making it a sublime sports car in every regard. Rapid acceleration was only one aspect of it winning our Best Driver’s Car competition, but a 2.9-second 0-60 time is extremely impressive. If the humble 992 S is quicker than the hardcore 991 GT3 RS, we’re even more excited for this model’s future.
6. Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door: 2.9 Seconds
The AMG GT 4-Door epitomizes the Affalterbach-based performance brand’s mission. It blends Mercedes luxury with the bravado of AMG’s GT sports car, and has the numbers to back that up. With 630 hp and 664 lb-ft channeled through 4Matic+ all-wheel drive, the GT 63 S 4-Door launches to 60 in 2.9 seconds. With Randy Pobst at the wheel, it also set a sedan lap record around Laguna Seca.

It’s something of a wonder that a V-8 engine even fits in the McLaren 600LT, but one does—and it’s a hell of a thing. 堪稱台灣車壇最大盛會的兩年一度世界新車大展,也就是我們俗稱的台北車展,即將於12月27日在南港展覽館盛大開幕,而台北車展之所以不同於〝賣車大會〞,乃是因為來自全球品牌的概念車也不少,甚至一肩扛起車展的主秀也沒有問題,而2018台北車展又有哪些值得期待的未來概念戰略車款呢?且看CarStuff的整理報導!
BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept
i Vision Dynamics Concept 是在 2017 年法蘭克福車展亮相的純電概念車,延續著 NEXT 100 Vision系列概念車設計元素,,碩大的雙腎形水箱護罩少了進氣隔柵,讓人直覺聯想到電動車的設計,雖然車身尺碼原廠並未透露,但從身型看來Vision Dynamics Concept被定位成一款四門Gran Coupe,保有BMW一慣的長軸距、短懸吊的經典比例,搭配刀鋒般的LED頭尾燈,看來即便是電動車,也要有帥氣的線條。
BMW替i Vision Dynamics Concept規劃了超過600公里的最大續航里程,性能表現方面可在4秒內完成0-100km/h加速,擁有上看超過200km/h的極速,內裝雖然沒有圖片可供預覽,但在搭載的自動駕駛技術支援下,可以猜想車室內將會以乘坐舒適性為最大考量,特別的是擋風玻璃一路延伸至車尾,除了提供更寬闖的視野外,也帶來別出心裁的坐乘體驗。
Nissan IMs Concept
Nissan 在這次車展上,向日本母廠借來了於 2019 北美車展上首度亮相的 IMs Concept 概念車,結合 SUV 與三廂四門車型而成,作為預覽未來純電房車產品線的方向。IMs 造型上相當特殊,沿襲了 IMx 的銳利設計風格,車身具有清晰可見的硬直線條結合輕柔流動的板金,另外車頭則設計了一個非傳統的“水箱罩”,兩側是時尚的LED和垂直的擾流翼。而整個車頂線條則與現行款 Maxima 相當類似,搭配全景玻璃也讓車內氣氛更為開闊,當然採用前後對開「自殺式」隱藏把手車門也是 ID 系列概念車的一大特色,搭配22吋大型輪圈,遠看真的有如一台 SUV。
內裝部分同樣沒有儀表板或是中控台的設計,你只能看到許多螢幕組成的未來化座艙並且延續到車門板上。左邊的主要顯示時間,溫度和電力剩餘範圍,右邊則是顯示車內娛樂系統和前排乘客的娛樂系統相關資訊,另外 IMx 上面所出現的「Premier Seat」獨立四座設計,更可以 90 度向後旋轉成為對座設計。
雖然 Nissan 將 IMs 視為未來的運動化跑房車,但他還是具備全自動駕駛模式,啟動後方向盤會自動收進去前方讓駕駛者能以更舒服的姿勢休息,同時車頭與車尾燈組都改成藍色向外界告知目前正在「自動駕駛」模式。
動力系統上, IMs 採用雙馬達系統搭配 115 kWh 鋰電池組,因此可以輸出最大馬力 483 hp (360 kW / 490 PS) 、最大扭力 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) ,雖然 Nissan 並沒有公佈其加速數據,但其續航力卻可以達到 611km的水準(單趟)。
Lexus LF-30 Concept
Lexus 這次動作相當大,才在東京車展上展出的 LF-30 Concept,這次和泰汽車獲得日方奧援,立刻空運來台灣展示,向台灣消費者展示了面向未來電動共享方案的“ Lexus 電氣化(Lexus Electrified)”願景首個里程碑。
LF-30 完美詮釋了 Lexus 電氣化的願景。極富未來感和藝術氣息的外觀設計,是為了實現與搭載輪上電動馬達(In-wheel motor)的純電動車相呼應的外觀設計,Lexus 將LF-30上獨特的能量流向轉變為可視化的設計語言:四個車輪產生的能量分別從車身四角匯聚到駕駛艙,並通過駕駛者直接傳向路面。
純電動車對前引擎蓋大小的要求較低,因此標誌性的紡錘形水箱罩設計進一步擴展到整車架構上。貫穿前後的車窗、肌肉感十足的翼子板以及翼形頭燈都強化了這一標誌性家族設計。優雅犀利的車頭和簡潔有力的尾部令整個車身設計一氣呵成。除了翼形頭燈,凌厲的尾燈、車身側面進氣口和其它功能性元素相互配合,大大提升了整車的空氣動力學和散熱性能。
駕駛艙基於全新的“Tazuna”(意為“韁繩”)概念打造,方向盤上精心設計的控制按鈕和抬頭顯示器相互配合,可實現簡單直觀的操作,讓駕駛者時刻專注於駕駛,無需繁瑣操作,便可輕鬆控制各種常用功能(如導航、音響系統和駕駛模式選擇等)。作為一款面向未來的純電動車,LF-30採用下一代人機交互界面設計,包括AR行車信息顯示和手勢控制界面,為用戶提供舒適便捷的駕乘環境。
F-30所具備的電池容量達110kWh,續航里程可達500公里,並能支援150kW的快速充電系統。性能也是「LF」所不可或缺的一環,每顆輪子皆獨立配有一具電動馬達,共四具電動馬達可爆發544匹最大馬力及71.4公斤米扭力,0至100公里加速僅需3.8秒,極速可達200公里,展現強悍性能。另外,由於電動車電池擺放的位置貼近車輛底部,造就電動車天生擁有低重心的優勢,LEXUS利用此一特性,再輔以最新科技LEXUS Advanced Posture Control:它可以依照駕駛者的感受,獨立控制包含前輪驅動、後輪驅動及四輪驅動等各種傳動方式,還可調節馬力,以創造平衡且兼具駕駛樂趣的行車體驗。LEXUS也預告了此一科技未來將全面搭載在所有LEXUS電動車款。
Lexus LF-1 Limitless Concept
LEXUS LF-1 Limitless開創了一個全新的豪華品類-旗艦級概念SUV,集強勁性能和豪華配備於一身,顧名思義代表著無限的潛能和可能性,同時也代表著噴湧不息的澎湃動力和能源多樣性:可以在燃料電池、混合動力、汽油,甚至純電模式下運行,充分體現了LEXUS 在科技、創新和設計上的最新進展。
LF-1 Limitless Concept 全車是與加州 CALTY Design Research 中心一同設計,因此全車充滿了未來感,不僅將 Lexus 標誌性的紡錘形水箱罩加以放大,迴旋鏢 LED 大燈與日行燈組基本上是與葉子板結合再一起,因此也沒有意義上的保險桿。而車身造型也與現行 LX/GX 等大型 SUV 走方正造型完全不同,反而更為偏向 RX 這種 Crossover 流線車身線條,比較值得注意的是車頂採用大型天窗,搭配車尾門上緣分離式尾翼與第三煞車燈,非常的搶眼。最後車尾採用的一道 LED 尾燈組,搭配下防護板,讓 LF-1 Limitless Concept 遠看也極為前衛。
車身尺碼上,LF-1 Limitless Concept  長 5014 mm 、寬 1986 mm、高 1605 mm ,軸距則為 2974 mm ,其實就車身尺碼來看是藉由 LX/GX 之間,因此很難說這台車到底會取代哪款車型。
至於內裝部分,LF-1 Limitless Concept 採用駕駛者導向的設計,全數位液晶儀表板可以顯示大量的行車資訊,而中控台上緣採用大面積的液晶顯示螢幕,並內建顯示4D導航系統。下方則是空調、音響、藍芽手機等開關。至於中央鞍座則是憑藉著駕駛人開啟何種模式來進行功能上的切換。另外座椅佈局上 ,LF-1 Limitless Concept 採用的是四人獨立座位設定,前座頭枕後方還擁有獨立的顯示螢幕,後座中央更設計有娛樂控制平板等。
當然 Lexus 自 LS+ Concept 車上開始導入的並且會配備源自於 LS+ 的 Highway Teammate 的自動駕駛技術,可以實現從高速入口至出口專用道路中的自動駕駛。不過動力系統上 Lexus 一個字都沒有說,僅表示將如同概念車「Limitless」名稱,未來將會有汽油引擎、HYBRID 油電混合引擎、PHEV 插電式混合動力系統、純電EV到氫燃料 Fuel Cell 動力引擎等多種燃料���行搭配。
Infiniti QX Inspiration Concept
INFINITI純電概念休旅 QX Inspiration,融合日式元素的全新設計語彙,重新塑造當代汽車樣貌。優雅堅韌的車身線條,源自於日式摺紙藝術,獨一無二的色彩靈感,恬淡而深刻,乃是啟發自日本漆器和陶瓷作品,遵循日本傳統「間(Ma)」空間留白的設計美學,在線條間找尋可能性,創造視覺上的藝術張力。車頂以木質百葉窗作為設計,透過光影交織,探尋美的境界,搭配有如日本春季散發溫暖光芒的室內氣氛燈,營造寧靜氛圍。方向盤包裹著柔軟皮革,搭配有著拋光處理的金色寬螢幕顯示器,結合手工縫製的皮革座椅,讓一切盡顯不凡。
 QX Inspiration,搭載智慧型全時四輪驅動系統(e-AWD),透過置於前軸與後軸上的馬達驅動輪軸,使其在任何情況下,皆能輕鬆駕馭。此外,電池以平整化的設計配置於底盤,降低車體重心,並搭配22吋鋁合金輪圈與優異的空氣力學設計,強化高速行駛的穩定性、舒適性,並兼具優異的操控性能表現。藉由電動車的配置優勢,QX Inspiration使車內空間極大化,輔以軸距2,850mm的設定,打造有如豪華休息室般的內裝空間,讓乘坐者能自在舒展、放鬆身心。
Mercedes-Benz EQA Concept 
Mercedes-Benz 除了在現場帶來了 EQC 純電量產車,這次也準備了一個驚喜:2017年法蘭克福車展與東京車展亮相的「EQA Concept」全新電動概念車。
EQA Concept 車型上也轉型為三門掀背,名稱上的A其實就是來自2017上海車展發表的Concept A Saloon設計元素,對應概念車4285×1810×1428mm的車身尺碼及2729mm軸距,不難看出與A-Class的血緣關係。
在純電動架構下,EQA Concept在前後軸各配置有1具電動馬達,總功率輸出來到200kW,使其可在5秒內完成0-100km/h加速,透過Daimler旗下新能源公司Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE自行研發的60kWh高效鋰離子電池組供電,使得總續航里程高達400公里,使用快充可在10分鐘內回復100公里範圍的續航力,除了常見的插電充電外,透過Mercedes me的服務亦可支援無線充電的功能,將智能化用車生活發揮極致。
正如前言所述,EQA Concept設計元素來自Concept A Saloon,是Mercedes-Benz首款緊湊型電動概念車,由於少了傳統引擎配置,車頭不再需要進氣格柵,改以大面積的黑色矩陣式LED面板構成,搭配兩側螺旋狀的雷射頭燈,前後保險桿、車側則由一道水藍色光條貫穿,營造十足的科技感受,猶如電能脈衝的尾燈亦採用雷射燈組技術,有趣的是,在駕駛模式從Sport切換至Sport Plus時,車頭LED面板便會從暈開狀的藍色火焰轉換成紅色直瀑式,或許未來也會變成與外界傳遞資訊的媒介。
Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept
e-Evolution Concept 是 Mitsubishi 於 2017 年東京車展展出的純電 SUV 概念車,名稱的「e」也直接表明這是一款為了未來新能源車市場而設計。車型除了是全球車壇正夯的Crossover外,也將納入全新的 EV 電動車技術、AYC電動四輪驅動與 AI 人工智慧技術。
外觀全車依循著DYNAMIC SHIELD的家族設計,壯碩的車頭由兩道鍍鉻飾條裝飾,可動式玻璃帷幕保護下的進氣格柵採用網狀設計,多少透漏了點性能味,下方大型進氣壩則是為了電控煞車冷卻做足準備,鏡面烤漆飾板下則藏著感應器與攝影鏡頭。
e-Evolution Concept動力來自高性能電動馬達,搭配一組設在車底板的高容量電池系統,提供低重心的車輛動態穩定性,全新開發雙馬達控制AYC(Active Yaw Control)四輪驅動系統,無論在何種情況下都能精準掌控驅動力。
e-Evolution Concept也是極盡概念車之能事,對開車門與無B住的設計,讓進出車室更為方便,由於沒有傳統引擎室的拘束,因此車室內裝也可以盡情發揮,創造出新穎的座艙空間,環艙式儀表板作為AI 人工智慧系統的輔助,能夠掌握智能駕駛的各項資訊。
Toyota RHOMBUS Concept
這台怪異的電動車,是由 Toyota 中國分公司 TMEC 開發的全新電動概念車「RHOMBUS」個人自駕電動車,也是未來都會純電小車的概念雛形,其開發及設計理念為針對90後年輕世代所設計。RHOMBUS Concept在外觀及車室設計上都相當前衛、創新,以「菱形」做為設計核心,極具未來感的菱形外觀塑造出更節能、環保的低風阻表現;獨特的1+2+1 三排特殊中置駕駛座,則創造出適合未來生活需求的科技座艙,是一台可以代表未來移動科技的先驅車款。
Toyota FINE-Comfort Ride Concept
FINE-Comfort Ride Concept 是在 2017 東京車展亮相的概念車,是一款AI自動駕駛的氫燃料電池動力車款,其開發及設計理念為實現零碳排放的未來移動社會。FINE-Comfort Ride的AI自動駕駛科技,結合3,450mm超長軸距與2+2+2的超彈性座艙設計,讓其車室空間能化身具有隱密性的會議或交誼場域。在未來,開車上路將不再只是單純的點到點「移動」,而將可以在過程中創造出各種可能性。
既然是概念車,內裝鋪陳也是相當前衛,大面積的數位儀表幾乎涵蓋整個正副駕,就連方向盤操作界面、車窗上也有數位螢幕,在自動駕駛為前提下,滿足諸如行車娛樂、商業會議等各式各樣情境所需。只不過進一步詢問原廠人員,這台概念車與 Mirai 共用相同的氫燃料電池系統,在日本JC08測試值下最大續航里程可達1千公里。

TOYOTA GR Supra Racing Concept與甫於今年9月份熱血上市的TOYOTA GR Supra不同,是TOYOTA賽車品牌「TOYOTA GAZOO Racing」以賽車競技為目的進行打造的賽車原型車,全車以TOYOTA的傳奇跑車Supra之名進行打造,傳遞純種跑車精神。
GR Supra Racing Concept 車身尺碼長4,574mm、寬 2,048mm、高1,230mm,軸距為2,470mm,雖然是款賽車原型車,但可以 Gazoo Racing 團隊換上自家「黑色/白色/紅色」三色賽車塗裝,加上賽事專用大型尾翼、下擴散器與凸字型的車尾造型,以及為強化空氣力學所設計的泡泡型車頂,而車身的「90」也是代表著全新車型代號 A90。

There’s A V12 Toyota Century 1GZ-FE Engine For Sale On eBay – $2,510 USD
The V12 developed for the Toyota Century is just as mythical as the car it powers, the Century is almost entirely sold in Japan to royalty, senior government ministers, and top executives – it’s understandably referred to as Japan’s Rolls-Royce. Outside of Japan the cars are exceedingly rare, further adding to their mystique within the JDM community.
Under the hood of the second generation Century you’ll find a 5 litre (4,996cc) V12 with double overhead cams per bank, 48 valves with VVT-i, a 10.5:1 compression ratio, and approximately 308 bhp at 5,200 rpm with 355 ft lbs of torque at 4,000 rpm. Torque is far more important than all-out horsepower in applications like this, and the Century V12 (codenamed 1GZ-FE) produces 295 ft lbs from as low as 1,200 rpm.
The Toyota Century was first introduced as a locally-produced luxury car in 1967, its styling has been infrequently updated over the decades preferring an understated design more in keeping with traditional Japanese values.
The most recent iteration of the Century was released in mid-2018, the model is now fitted with a hybrid V8 and the V12 is no longer in production. A small number of these 1GZ-FE engines come up for sale each year, typically from the Japanese market.
Over the years the 1GZ-FE V12 has been fitted to a wide array of vehicles by JDM enthusiasts, typically Toyota Supras but there’s at least one Toyota GT-86 powered by a Century V12. It is possible to buy secondhand examples of the Century from Japan for not a whole lot of money, some sell for well under $20,000 USD.
The Century V12 you see here is currently for sale on eBay, it comes with its original automatic transmission and its ECU. It’s listed as having between 45,000 and 55,000 miles on the odometer. 2019 Detroit Auto Show: Hits, Misses, and Revelations
DETROIT, Michigan—Thirty years after Toyota launched Lexus and Nissan introduced Infiniti here, and 27 years after Chrysler smashed Cobo Hall’s front windows with the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the North American International Auto Show is done with January. The reviews from jaded auto journos are mixed, and the press day crowds were down despite Toyota and China’s GAC flying in press from overseas. We’re pretty confident, though, in saying what Detroit lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality this year. There is more to like than there is to avoid, even if the Japanese and Chinese automakers are the only ones left who still build concepts, and even though Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Mini, Audi, and Volvo this year joined a bunch of other automakers who had followed Aston Martin’s decision to leave town after its Zen display of a decade ago. Herewith, our regular compendium of criticism, the good, the bad, and the philosophical, this time about what there is to see at the 2019 NAIAS:
HIT: Toyota Supra
Too many are getting stuck on the BMW partnership and the long gestation process, nitpicking the design, and decrying the lack of a manual transmission (which by the way Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has not ruled out, so call your favorite dealer and demand it). Can we all just agree that what Toyota has done is give the world what by all accounts should be a nimble, kick-ass, rear-drive sports car that’s relatively attainable, price-wise? Call it whatever the hell you want, the fact that this car exists at all is pretty remarkable in this day and age. And it’s all but assured that hard-core variants will be in the offing. Yeah, what a terrible thing Toyota has done . . . not.—Mike Floyd
Automotive journalists can be a funny group. After wishing for a new Supra for years, some of them were overheard describing the final production car as less than thrilling, with others going so far as to call it “ugly.” “Look at all those fake plastic vents and intakes,” they decried. But as Supra designer Nobua Nakamura told editor-in-chief Mike Floyd, those nonfunctional pieces could become functional on future variants of the car. I don’t think the new Supra is perfect in the appearance department, and its roofline does look proportionally odd from some angles. But for the love of Suzuka, I’m excited to get a chance to drive it once test vehicles become available. If it lights up twisting roads as I expect it will, any niggling quibbles I have with its styling will go right off the nearest cliffside.—Mac Morrison
The biggest, most anticipated thing at this show is not an SUV, or even an autonomous tall electric sedan, but a sports car. Yes, it’s essentially a BMW Z4 built in Austria by Magna, but at least it has its own sheetmetal, which is more than you can say for the 86. And I’d take that Toyota 86 over most of the cars on the market today. Since the beginning of time, sports cars have relied on sharing some components to make development costs work out. In his introduction of the car, Akio Toyoda said he hopes Toyota will build more new sports cars in the future. Here’s to seeing him fulfill that wish.—Todd Lassa
MISS: Toyota Supra
This was easily the most anticipated car of the show, and I have no doubt it will be a blast to drive. But what is with Toyota outsourcing its performance cars? Sure, it’s great that Toyota will be selling a re-skinned BMW. But right in the same room as the BMW Supra is the Lexus LC, a 2018 Automobile All-Star and proof positive that Toyota knows how to design scintillating cars. With all the emphasis on making Camrys and RAV4s better to drive—which they are, by the way—what does it say when you outsource your halo sports car? I can’t imagine the effect this must have had on the morale of their engineering corps. “Nice job on the new Camrys, and oh, by the way, that new Supra? We’re getting BMW to do it.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have the Supra back—but I’d prefer a Toyota Supra.—Aaron Gold
REVELATION: The Supra almost wasn’t a Supra
In a chat at the Detroit show with Supra chief designer Nobua Nakamura, he told us that in July of 2013 that he and his team started sketching out ideas for a model that was at first billed as a nameless sports-car project. It was only after seeing the positive reception given to the FT-1 concept—created by Toyota’s Calty design house in California—at the 2014 Detroit show that the FT-1 would become the primary design inspiration for the sports-car project that would eventually be dubbed Supra. For giving the best speech I’ve seen at an auto show in years, if not ever. No boring sales numbers. No bits of badly faked enthusiasm. Toyoda-san’s speech was funny, it was too the point, and though it was scripted—I was reading it on the teleprompter along with him—it’s obvious he’s seriously jazzed about this car (even if it is an automatic BMW).—AG
HIT: Fernando Alonso
My wife thinks so, anyway. Alonso appeared briefly on stage with Akio Toyoda for the Toyota Supra launch. Toyoda was gracious in acknowledging that the two-time Formula 1 champion (for Ferrari) and one-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner (for Toyota) is driving another marque at the 24 Hours of Daytona later this month (a Cadillac).—TL
HIT: Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
For the jaded, it might be easy to look at the new GT500 and see just another jacked-up performance variant of Ford’s pony car. I get that . . . but whatever. More than 700 horsepower (what’s the final number, Ford?!) from the 5.2-liter supercharged V-8, a dual-clutch gearbox, zero to 60 mph in the mid-three-second range, a sub-11-second quarter-mile, magnetic dampers, and an optional Carbon-Fiber Track package with carbon wheels, rear-seat delete, and more? Find me a challenging road course and let’s get it on. Now.—MM

HIT: Lexus LC Convertible concept
Rare is the car that gets scalped and doesn’t look great, but even rarer is a car as stunning to behold as the LC droptop. For all the coupe’s beauty—okay, some folks don’t like the spindle grille, but I think it works there—its overall attitude and stance strike me more as coming from a place of aggression. This concept elevates the LC to true elegance. I wouldn’t be shocked to see examples of the eventual production version at various concours d’élégance in the coming decades.—Erik Johnson

MISS: Cadillac XT6
It’s a damn shame what’s happened to Cadillac. Yes, I get it, its sedan sales are cratering and OMG it needs crossovers ASAP. I’m sure the XT6 and XT4 will be sales salve, but they come off as old GM badge-engineered exercises, and beyond the expressive grilles look uninspired. While they may put the brand back in the black, it’s sad to see really capable cars like the CT6 be minimized. At least Cadillac gave that car some serious attention in the form of the 550-hp CT6-V (which already is sold out). There is some hope in the form of the emerging EV strategy. Maybe those cars won’t have alphanumeric names.—MF
As another grizzled veteran told me, this three-row luxury SUV would have been a hit in 2012, or even 2016. While there’s nothing wrong with the new XT6 other than the Honda Pilot–esque side surfacing and the too-familiar GM interior plastics and switchgear, there’s nothing about it that pops. While I once believed that rear-wheel-drive proportions don’t matter on a tall SUV, the new Lincoln Aviator and even the 2020 Ford Explorer (gasp) have proved otherwise.—TL
