In Giappone, soprattutto in estate, ci sono i cosiddetti Natsu (夏), estate, Matsuri (祭), festival, appunto festival estivo.

Toyotaro is a cryptid of a giant fish that is said to appear in the Toyohira River in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, for which very little information is available. Only reports that several people have seen the giant fish in the river, and its appearance and specific size are unknown.
It is possible that it is a member of the sturgeon family, which is thought to have already become extinct in Hokkaido. In fact, it is known that sturgeon come from Russia and other countries, although it is very rare.

My weekend in Hokkaido was a mixed bag.
Tumblr media
The canals of Otaru were beautiful, and the small town center was enjoyable enough to meander around. There were a few tourist traps (Miffy and Snoopy themed shops stood out) and I formulated my theory of The Hierarchy Of Instagram Influencers Based On Observations Of Legwear. Overall, it was an enjoyable few hours. However, I'm not sure it would stretch to more than a day or be worth a return visit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sapporo was a different kettle of fish.
Hokkaido's capital is walkable and has the usual mix of unique and stylized modern architecture seen across Japan. It also ticks the boxes for being a city in Japan - having both a Ferris Wheel and a Tower.
There is a metro system, although it isn't much use in the city center. Most of the main tourist attractions are within 3km of one another and it's quicker to walk than navigate your way underground, wait for a train etc.
Not that I saw many attractions thanks to queues and bad timing on my part. The weather didn't help either, dropping to -4C at night, lifting to 4C in the day. What paths weren't cleared were quickly covered with slippery, compacted snow.
Tumblr media
That said, Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill had some nice views across the city, and I enjoyed a walk from Nakajimakoen to the Sapporo Factory shopping mall that took in the Toyohira River. The latter was arguably more spectacular than the crisp virgin snow of the much-lauded hill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There will likely be a return visit to Hokkaido in a year or three, if only because I want to explore the Ainu heritage, something I woefully missed on this trip.
(I also posted this on my blog)

Photo of the Day: Soseigawa
Soseigawa is a small stream that feeds into the more well-known Toyohira River in Sapporo, Hokkaido. It runs behind the TV Tower at the east end of Odori Park. When I lived there in 1990s Soseigawa was a dirty stream that nobody paid attention to. When I returned in 2011, it was transformed into a beautiful walking area. Amazingly, the water was clean and I saw children wading in it. In warmer…

pkmnsdarkqueen asked: Well then how did your characters parent's meet?
❝ At Papa’s elementary school, Toyohira Elementary in Jubilife. Since she was from Twinleaf, Mama only set foot on the campus because a master Coordinator --- one of Sinnoh’s earliest, in fact --- was performing for the students. But the event was also open to the public, that’s why she was allowed in in the first place.
They were seated right next to each other. To a friend on his other side, Papa whispered, ‘ Battling is better for Sinnoh. Contests are lame, they should have stayed Hoenn’s thing ’. Well, something to that effect. Young children are prone to take offense easily, right --- so as a Contest enthusiast and aspiring Coordinator, Mama retorted that he was lamer. After the event, Papa managed to single her out from the crowd of people leaving the school’s gates, then hurled a snowball before fleeing. It hit its mark, the back of her head, and she swore to the Heavens she’d commit murder if she ever saw him again.

Not quite a romantic first encounter, but that’s all there is to it. Another several years would elapse before their next one. ❞

6. Meiji Map of Sapporo [明治札幌市地図]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This tourist map is that of Central Sapporo(the full area under Sapporo is far larger) which more or less corresponds to the old map by the Toyohira river. The map from top to bottom is supposedly merely some 5km approx.  All these ‘historical sites’ of Sapporo in fact are in the same area in the top half and center of the map, as is the actual Sapporo Station. However, the old station building and the Ryuunji Temple are housed in the Hitorical Village(Kaitaku no Mura) on other side of river.
Sapporo was a planned city with it's streets being laid out in a grid pattern. This was said to be inspired on the grid layout of Kyoto. Often it is said that this grid pattern and rectangular houses are based on american cities due to Hokkaido being developed on a american model. In Sapporo city site they attribute the inspiration of the grid pattern to Kyoto. They also state that Murayama Park was named after the eponymous park in Kyoto.
Odori Park was originally a 'fire line' and hence it divided the town into the 'government buildings' in the north(top) half of Odori Park and other areas to the south.
7. Sapporo Beer Factory [札幌麦酒工場]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Orignally established in accordance with the Kaitakushi, after it's abolition, the Sapporo Brewery Co. was established. In 1906 three breweries- Sapporo, Osaka and Nippon- had merged and become the Dainippon Brewery Co.
The beer factory is located at walking distance to the Church. In 1993 most of this site was made into a shopping and commercial center known as Sapporo Factory which includes some of the old buildings. The Sapporo Beer Factory Museum too preserves the old building, machinery, etc.
8. Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill [羊ヶ丘展望台]

Tumblr media
Well...kinda.
Hitsujigaoka hill had it’s name origin in the sheep farm for governmental wool research.
Originally, in 1906, Iwanami Rokuro[岩波六郎] of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce- directive established the Tsuisappu Bull Stud Ranch[月寒種牛牧場] in two locations one of which is now known as Hitsujigaoka Hill. In 1919 this was replaced with a sheep farm whose main purpose was sheep breeding and study of wool. The hill got it’s name due to this sheep farm. The cattle breeding farm also remained in smaller capacity. Both of these dealt with the rearing of cattle(mainly bulls), sheep and even pigs.  .
Also, the local mutton dish is quite well-loved.
