#GreaterLondoner-Community Heroes, Ursi Tolliday
Sam Crosby is the Tower Hamlets Community Manager and is responsible for community services at Toynbee Hall. Toynbee Hall is located in Tower Hamlets and works to tackle poverty in East London and further afield, providing the community with much valued advice, services and activities for younger and older generations.
Since the Covid-19 quarantine much of the community that relies on the space risks feeling isolated. Sam Crosby has been working to tackle this problem by setting up a virtual community centre which will provide a range of free classes from creative writing to laughter yoga.
This project will launch on Monday 30th March. You can access the activities through the “Activities against Isolation-For a Happier, Fairer East London”, https://www.facebook.com/groups/2318906881741572/ or get involved by contacting Sam- [email protected].

Judge Rinder, Lady Hale, pink wigs and plenty of dogs: The best photos from the London Legal Walk
You can still donate
Feet sore from yesterday’s London Legal Walk? Relax, grab a cup of tea and feast your eyes on some of the best pics from the charity event.
It’s become compulsory to take a few snaps along the 10km route, which lawyers descend on each year to raise money for free legal advice centres across London and the South East. These include a photo with the king of lawyer selfies, Judge Rinder:

Rinder wasn’t the only legal celeb donning trainers yesterday evening. A number of Supreme Court justices, including the president, Lady Hale, took part in the charity get-together too:
‘Team Supreme’ are ready to take part in the London Legal Walk this evening in aid of the London Legal Support Trust. Included in the team are Lady Hale, Lord Mance, Lord Hodge and Lord Carnwath. Good luck to all walkers! o o #legalwalk

Another great feature of the walk is the sheer number of dogs that take part every year. Here’s just a few from yesterday:

10 Reasons the Toynbee Hall “Virtual Community Centre” is Important #GreaterLondoner- Ursi Tolliday
Toynbee Hall in Tower Hamlets works to tackle poverty in East London and further afield, providing the community with much valued services and activities. Due to the corona virus lockdown the space has been forced to closed. Community Manager, Sam Crosby has been working to tackle this problem by setting up a virtual community centre which will provide a range of free classes from creative writing to laughter yoga. These are 10 reasons the Virtual Community Centre is important to the community within isolation:
1. Promoting Community Value and Morale
For many people, Toynbee Hall is an important aspect of their lives. By setting up the Virtual Community Centre Sam shows that the Hall values the community and is committed to continuing services and activities. Without the virtual community centre people risk feeling abandoned by the space.
2. Combatting Loneliness
Since the Covid-19 quarantine much of the community that relies on the space risks feeling isolated and lonely. A virtual space helps to bring the community together. Through the Facebook page people can share images and videos with other members of the community. This helps to open-up a dialogue and keep communication going. The page also provides the opportunity for people to form new friendships at a time when they may feel the loneliest.
3. Battling Mental Illness
The pandemic causes much concern over people’s mental health. Many people will be feeling much higher levels of stress due to several factors such as unemployment, loss of income and difficult living conditions. With constant fear-inducing news stories and a daily death-toll people are much more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression with a fear for loved ones and their own health. The Virtual Community Centre helps people to keep their minds healthy by providing activities that create a sense of purpose and achievement and a positive experience to focus on whilst activities like the “Mindfulness Session” have a direct positive impact on mental health.
4. Providing Structure
The lockdown means that many people will be experiencing a lack of structure within their lives; usually provided by school or work. This can cause people to feel lost and experience feelings of low self-esteem due to unproductivity. The space provides structure and routine to the community by posting a weekly timetable on their Facebook page, starting with “Morning Inspiration”.
5. Helping Parents
Parents are likely to feel under-pressure with personal stresses and the responsibility of home-schooling and entertaining children. The Virtual Community centre provides parents with a break, through video tutorials and workshops allowing time to carry out personal tasks like completing own coursework. Activity ideas like the Scavenger Hunt and daily drawing challenge provide parents with ideas keeping children occupied.
6. Providing Education
Due to school’s closing on the 20th March, parents are home-schooling their children. Some parents will struggle to provide a substantial education for their children meaning that children are left behind and find it difficult to catch up when schools re-open. The lockdown has also meant many adults not being able to continue with education. The space is providing educational classes such as “Creative Writing” which will enable people to keep learning and practicing skills.
7. Promoting Fitness
With closure of gyms and swimming pools, the lockdown causes concern for people’s physical health. The centre is providing fitness classes such as yoga and Tai Chi showing exercise that you can do in your own home and encouraging people to stay active.
8. Finding a Silver Lining
Due to the lockdown, communities will be experiencing great feelings of loss. Many people have lost jobs, money, local resources and services due to the pandemic. It is therefore important to gain something positive from the experience. The space encourages people to try something new or develop a skill providing the community with a positive experience as a result of the lockdown.
9. Promoting Talent
The space has called on local people to volunteer their time to share knowledge and skills with the community. This helps to promote local talent and could have a long-term positive affect on people’s businesses with people discovering classes and workshops, signing up for these after the lockdown.
10.Promoting the Space
As communities are stuck at home in isolation many people are looking for ways to fill their time. Free online resources are particularly popular as people are short of money. The Virtual Community Centre will help to promote the space. Some people may discover Toynbee Hall through the Virtual Community Centre and decide to use the space post-lockdown.
