Touch of Evil (1958), dir. Orson Welles.
A movie so incredible I can somehow mostly get past the fact that Charleton Heston plays a Mexican.

My favorite example of going into a movie blind is when I showed my future husband Touch of Evil in college. He was a big fan of House MD at the time, and when we met Detective Hank Quinlan, a grouchy, cane-using expert who didn't care about anyone's feelings but damn it he got results, he thought this was going to be a good guy.
It was very enlightening to watch him realize over the first act that he was not going to be a good guy.

AllMusic Staff Pick: Henry Mancini Touch of Evil [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]
This score to the classic 1958 Orson Welles film of scandal and intrigue along the Mexican border used a lot of appropriate Latin accents: Afro-Cuban percussion, smoky Tijuana jazz jive, and honky tonking instrumental jump blues with a strong rock & roll flavor. Both ominous and exuberant in its evocation of temptation and deceit, it attracted the specific praise of no less a critic than François Truffaut.
