Match Review: Tottenham Hotspur U21s 2-2 Manchester United U21s
A dominant home side couldn't overturn a plucky United. Hehehe.
youtube
United's average age, as the video says, is just over 18. Outbound loans mean some are still at the club, some are brought up from the U18s to test their mettle and show their worth.
Despite that, United put up a good fight here away at Tottenham. Spurs had the lion's share of possession, but otherwise these were two very evenly matched sides.
Lankshear opened the scoring, unmarked deep in the box off a cross, before Curley evened things up with a hard drilled shot across goal from distance.
Biancheri then put United in front 7 minutes later thanks to a bit of weaving from Ethan Williams and a deft cross into his path, but a weird moment of controversy saw United pegged back by Donley. Weird, because Dermot Mee clashed with Santiago, and then fell over the potentially injured player in the box for Donley to loop and lob a finish into the net.
The second half was still quite end to end, but with a touch more composure in possession and a bit missing in terms of chance creation and finishing. Neither side will be happy with a draw, but truth be told it was a fair result on the day.
Next up for United are Forest away, before the season rounds out away to Southampton. Both sides flank United by one point, and two wins here might spare our blushes given just how mid-table we are right now...

the three lions: england's national team, a beginner's guide (and why, exactly, it's coming home.)
england has the joint oldest national team in the world (competed in the first international match against scotland in 1872)
their home stadium, wembley, in london, holds 90,000 supporters
their training grounds, st. george's park, has 12 pitches, a hilton on-site, and hosts all of england's national teams, from men's seniors, women's seniors, all levels of men's and women's juniors, and the disability and futsal teams
during international break, the three lions stay at the hilton on site, train on site, and rarely leave camp unless they're withdrawing from play altogether
currently managed by gareth southgate, who has managed the england men's seniors since 2016, having managed england's u21 team before that.
the england seniors play with unset numbers. they wear the number of the position they're playing in any specific game, outside of major tournaments. (1 = goalie, 2=right back, 3=left back, 4+5=centre backs, 6=defending midfielder, 7=right winger, 8=box-to-box midfielder, 9=striker, 10=attacking midfielder, 11=left winger). in any game outside of major tournaments these are the numbers the players are wearing. always.
in major tournaments, the players are assigned the numbers before the tournament. position numbers still matter. the preferred XI are getting the numbers 1-11.
players on the bench wear numbers from 12 upwards. (so, for this upcoming 23-man squad euros, the bench players will be wearing 12-23. this does not mean these 12-23 will never start, they will. but the preferred xi will be wearing 1-11, even if they don't start).
jamie can confidently play any number from 7 through 11. he prefers the 8 or the 10, but he frequently finds himself on the wings.)
occasionally, england will play their home matches at stadiums other than wembley. but playing at wembley is special, it always will be.
getting a call is a big honor, and it is always a big honor. you can reject a call up, but that will lead to criticism from both industry professionals (players, pundits, coaches) and the public.
typically, when playing at wembley, the team will travel from st. george's park to the tottenham hotspur training grounds the day before the first match, where they will stay and train for the days prior to the games.
the euro squad is 23 men, less than the 25 man squad england has on an average international breaks. the breaks leading up to these major tournaments decide who makes it and who doesn't.
this generation of england's players is considered the best in a very long time. if england doesn't bring it home (win it all) this summer, it's likely that southgate's job is on the line.

A loanee from Tottenham Hotspur, Dane Scarlett, shocked viewers and many England fans after he helped the team score their only goal within the first five minutes in an U21 draw against the Netherlands. The talented forward, who was loaned to Oxford United by Tottenham Hotspur, was substituted for Liam Delap after he played in the first 56 minutes of the game.  The Oxford United's star brilliantly dived as he headed a cross from Samuel Samuel Iling-Junior into the Netherlands' net. Before the goal, he had already created an attempt through his shot that was blocked by the opposition's defenders. An ex-loanee from Oxford United, James Beadle, saves attempts that were created by the Netherlands side to help England maintain the lead, including denying a header and long-range attempt created by Ezechiel Banzui. Some minutes before the end of the match, Thom van Bergen converted a pass from Million Manhoef into a goal. Beadle also saved more attempts that were made during minutes before the end of the match that helped England to share two points with the Netherlands. Oxford United's forward contribution to the game followed a brief cameo in the scoreless match the team played against Spain. Read the full article

hellooo 👋 i do agree with your response to the previous ask! i’m more positive about the general state of asian football as more asian players flourish and make a name for themselves, and i can only hope that governments start to implement progressive and reform existing sporting structures in the near future. (sorry about india getting knocked out. imo they deserved to qualify 🫂)
also!! i watched the spurs academy documentary yesterday too and i was just so overwhelmed by the u21s. the season was a journey of dreams, from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs. the belief that WB has instilled in that team — to dare and to do — is beautiful, it’s euphoric, it’s the spirit of tottenham hotspur in its purest form. i really want to see most of the players step up to the first team and i hope many of them excel. we have a ludicrous amount of skilled players, fingers crossed they get the development they need to make it big!
i’d really love to hear what were some of your favourite moments from their season (or from the other spurs teams too)! looking back, i’ve found so many things to cherish as tottenham march forward together, and while there were some rough patches throughout the season, i have so much faith and hope in the future of the club. things can only get better. COYS 🫶 - 💙
helloooooo my friend!!! thank you for the commiserations 🫂 maybe next time…
ah the documentary absolutely ruined me. i’m hoping to carve out some downtime during the weekend so i can gif some of it but i’ve not got a clue where to start, i want to gif all of it! it’s crafted with so much love and care 🥺 and like you said, it was euphoric. the fact that wayne kept repeating that all they have to do is be brave and play our way and how that would be enough, that would be what was necessary and how the lads internalised it! they’re such a good group of kids. i was blown away by how well spoken and thoughtful and mature they all were in the documentary. it’s so lovely finally having this coherent ethos at the club and how ange and robert and wayne tell the men’s first team and the women’s first team and the u21s that being brave is the most important thing. it makes me feel so connected to the club!
ah, favourite moments… i’d have to say absolutely everything that they showed in the documentary. probably my most favourite match was us going 3-0 down against forest and then coming back 4-3, it was then that i knew that this group could do anything. it was such a relentless sense of belief that i loved. i think nile said it in the doc, about how they know that all they’ve got to do is lock in for 10 minutes and how that can help them bring everything back on track. i love that they didn’t let their heads drop despite the adversity and came back fighting. that’s the essence of spurs! there were so many similar moments across the men and women as well and i think that match (plus us winning the pl2, obviously), making the fa cup final for the women, and that win against sheff utd for the men were some of the memories i’ll cherish the most. because all three showed us that to dare is to do, that the crux is showing up in the face of adversity. whatever happens the spurs go marching on!!! 🤍🤍🤍

Spurs Ladies international call-ups!
Megan Wynne, Anna Filbey, Jess Naz and Rianna Dean have all been rewarded for their fine form with international call-ups this January.
Megan Wynne and Anna Filbey have both been called up to the Welsh senior squad for a training camp in Newport followed by an away friendly in Italy. The match takes place on Tuesday 22nd at 5pm GMT. Meanwhile, at St George’s Park, Spurs’ top-scorer Rianna Dean is taking part in a training camp all this week with the England U21s.
Jess Naz is part of the England U19 squad competing in the Algarve Tournament this month. In England’s match against Norway on the 16th, Jess came on as a substitute when we were 3-1 down and assisted the Lionesses’ second goal as well as being involved in a number of later chances, though the team couldn’t find an equaliser and the game ended 2-3. The next match is against the Netherlands on Sunday 20th (1pm GMT).
