i'm sure this isn't what you imagined when you sent the meme but this is what i came up with sooooo enjoy!

“Link! Link, you must come look!”

The young swordsman is barely awake, head still heavy from a long night’s sleep, but he is not surprised to hear Zelda, bright and chipper, call him from outside. She usually rose with the sun, energized by curiosity and an unending desire to offer aid and support to her kingdom.

It had been just eight months since they finally rid the land of Calamity Ganon, and while Link was ready to rest for another one hundred years, Zelda was ready to put her feet to the ground, begin restoring Hyrule to what it once was. So, of course, he follows her. It is the only thing he knows how to do.

He pulls his Champion’s tunic over his mess of hair, deciding to leave it down today, though his hair band remains on his wrist. The tunic is paired with the pants he has from Kakariko village, fabric tight but easy to move in, secured with a leather brown belt and adorned with Shekiah branded shin guards. 

“Link, hurry!”

There’s an edge in Zelda’s voice that makes Link’s shoulders stiffen. Grabbing the Master Sword in its sheath, he runs out of their tent, eyes frantically scanning the terrain as they adjust to the bright light of the sunrise. Zelda’s standing at the edge of the river, and, without thought, Link grabs the back of her hood and tugs her behind him, stance wide as he looks for whatever danger must be near. 

“Link!” There’s a small huff as Zelda’s bum hits the ground, dirt dusting up her trousers, and a quick shuffling follows as she gets back to her feet. “Link, there’s no danger.” 

It takes him only a moment to realize she is right: other than the quiet shifting of grass in the breeze, the lapping of the river water, and the hum of darners’ wings, there is nothing. Sunrays stretch onto Hyrule Field, warming the ground underneath their feet, the ground that is no longer scourged by Guardians. There are still some monsters here and there, but it seems since Calamity Ganon was vanquished the ones that were left were truly the only ones left; there hadn’t been a single blood moon in months. 

Link puts the Master Sword on his back and turns, slowly, to look at his friend, charge, Queen, and glares at her the way only a friend and protector can. Zelda’s expression is sheepish, though she is still smiling softly, hands cupped together just underneath her chin. 

“There were some staminoka bass just in front of our camp. I was thinking they might make a good breakfast.” 

With his heartbeat starting to slow, the adrenaline fading, Link’s hard exterior starts to melt. She is excited about fish. Fish, such a plentiful resource in Hyrule, something that he doesn’t think twice about when he crosses rivers or stabs a few with a spear for lunch. He turns back to the river and looks into the clear water, seeing that the aforementioned staminoka bass are still there, mindlessly swimming in the gentle currents. Link walks forward, his foot falls extra quiet, almost like he isn’t moving at all, and as his feet enter the water he starts to roll his sleeves up until they reach above his elbow. He wades in until he is knee deep, his eyes trained on the fish swimming around him, hair framing his face but thankfully not blocking his view. 

“Link?”

“Shh.”

He watches for a few seconds more before he strikes both hands in the water, sharp and swift like a spear. When he pulls them out, he is holding a fish in each hand, flopping and trying desperately to jump back into the water. He walks back to land and holds one of the fish out to Zelda who, despite a moment of hesitation, takes it and holds it tight against her chest.

“I’ll get a fire going.”

There’s a smile Link can’t quite resist as he watches Zelda struggle to walk with the fish, and she finally throws it on the ground next to their unlit campfire. With his fish firm in his hand, Link reaches for a spear standing against their tent and makes quick work of putting the fish out of their misery.

“Thank you,” Zelda says and Link nods, twirling the spear a time or two before he cleans the fish blood off with his shin guards. He looks up when he hears Zelda clear her throat and cough, her cheeks a bit red. 

The fire hasn’t started yet, and Link tilts his head, curious what happened.

“Oh, I’m fine,” she assures him. “I was just…You know, that’s quite a good look on you.” She points to his still rolled sleeves, and his toned forearms which are now in view. “It is significantly more practical, I think.” 

Link glances down at his arms, skin wet, gives a little shrug, and sits down to start fileting the fish for their breakfast. He leaves his sleeves as they are, glancing up occasionally to find Zelda staring.

LINKTOBER DAY 22, SEABED INN

Nothing like ending the adventure with a weird dream and manifesting a new spooky ring! Link’s too tired to wake Zelda for this one.

(That zora is a strange one, choosing to live near the sky. Have you heard? Rumors have it she even took one of the last zonai as a student.

I heard she taught it healing arts!

I heard she let it near the Sky Princess.

Oh no!

Didn’t she know the Zonai are cursed? Nothing ever goes right with their magic. That’s why they were taken by the malice.)

Hero of Bombs - Abilities

Link can take others with him with Ascend so long as he holds their hand (Ingo gets used to it in time & “swims” with him)

Ingo is in charge of vehicle builds, so he holds onto all the plans (I didn’t come up with that joke lol, & you can make bread in game soooo 🥪 ).

Ingo would throw Link materials to fuse onto his arrows & other weapons (though he questions some of Link’s fusions)

Kind of a hot take - I thought Link kind of becomes the unofficial Sage of Time in that moment - he doesn’t have a Secret Stone, but he gets Zelda’s power complete with the Time character (based on 時, meaning “time”). Also Ingo removes his hat out of respect because that felt like what he’d do. ^_^

Since Zelda became a light dragon at the very beginning of Hyrule, you ever wondered if any of the past links and zeldas saw her in the sky? Imagine her past self and link seeing the light dragon and they don't know the events that will occur for it to happen

Yes, i had the same reflection as you: Did other incarnations of Zelda and Link saw the Light Dragon? I also wonder if witnessing legendary moments of Hyrule's history left some marks on Totk Zelda after she turned back. I love brainrotting on the LoZ. Each new entry adds pieces to the neverending brainrot cycle. And time travel has its share of shenanigans: Totk's time travel implies there were technically two master swords at the same time during games. Did Zelda herself created her beloved Silent Princesses?( Well, i like to think so)

Something something, Princesses throughout Hyrule's history claim seeing the gentle silhouette of a dragon roaming the sky. The vision would give them comfort, hope and courage in moments of hardship and adversity.

BEFORE I start I have to let you know that there is a full on comic about basically this (not modern au but stilllll) and it’s so awesome and made by such awesome people,,,, called links fun roadtrip here on tumblr please check it out it would mean the world to me

I love your au!!! I love how the hylian duo look like gremlins, I LOVE the expressions and sass constantly and the changes to the lore, the worldbuilding and also the emotions (OUCH). I love their relationship with purah and each other and the new champions. I love the depth you gave Yona and her relationship with Sidon and Mipha. I love how link feels comfortable talking to sidon in addition to sign, I don't know if he does that with anyone else but Zelda unless its absolutely necessary (eg: just launched out a cannon and is paragliding down, so hands are busy) (side note: i love how much of an adrenalin junky/gremlin he is!!)

I do got a few questions! Will the pair get the sheikah slate again (so say link has the slate and zelda the pad), and can both slates do the warping and item storage (food, ingredients, armor, weapons, etc) (if so: no WONDER link was so upset! His collection!)

Does link have access to the ultrahand abilities (ik you said not The ultrahand, but what about fuse or ascend or rewind etc?) Where is the mastersword??

Does Link still have the champions' abilities, or did he lose those when their spirits moved on at the end of botw?

I know these are a lot of questions but I can't stop thinking about it!! The last few updates sent me back rereading the whole au and now its just vibrating in my head and giving me no piece

This is long and rambly, just know I am very much enjoying this au! Its silly and fun and touching and cute. Thank you for working on it!!

Oo some notes (also ty for circling my au haha im glad other people fixate like i do)

(Prewarning— i did not finish totk despite putting triple hours in it, so a lot of this story is being written while playing, though i know the big broad strokes thanks to cultural osmosis and video essays. A lot of Familiar Familiar builds from my playthrough with BOTW over TOTK, so the sheikah influence is significantly stronger and I will always choose botw characterization over totk characterization as a result.)

That aside

1. Sheikah slate’s dead. Rest in pieces, link’s rare collectable korok poop. Purah’s extracting as much data as she can to put on the purah pad but you can see the dread in her eyes whenever she has to tell link resurrection is not possible.

2. No idea about the zonai arm powers yet— im thinking about ascend, but the longer i go through this story the less likely ill hand it to him just due to immersion breakage. He and zelda will be getting sheikah gadgets from purah though! Maybe ill have a scene of him wandering through the sky island shrines, but without zelda warning rauru he and sonia wouldnt have prepared anything for the hero of the future. (But i DO love ascension and fuse. Lowkey dislike the building mechanics from a concept art pov because the green glue makes me want to cry, but it’s FINE i GUESS)

2b. Master sword’s chilling in korok forest. Link put it back in this au because of Reasons (part of his and zelda’s characterization in this au is to discard their past roles and embrace the present, not as knight and princess but as hero and researcher. They both have to face the reality those roles aren’t dead, but it’s a work in progress. I may also never address it. This “one off hehe lemme draw some guys” idea quickly spiraled into a web comic series so apologies for the vagueness, because i too am watching them adventure with dread and awe and i don’t know where they’ll go with it. They literally write themselves.

3. Rip champions, their ghosts are Gone (but their influence remains. You go mipha, keep haunting the narrative girl, i love you)

I know that some of these story notes don’t quite match up to what totk states is stone cold canon, but that’s the joy of fan work! Anyways sorry for folks who i have NOT answered asks of— i have a lot of them and I’m much better at the drawing and writing part then the socialization aspect (please feel free to peak in to my zoo enclosure ever so often though. I need the enrichment)

is there any modern totk outfits that you have drawn as a part 2 to the botw ones?

It's been a while since i've done something like this! one thing i noticed is that the totk outfits are definitely. considerably sluttier. link turned 18 and was like ok time to whore it up a bit
