Wind Breaker Episode 1: Black and White
This was a series that I was highly doubtful. The previews simply looked too good, and Cloverworks certainly has a history of being hot and cold.
Somehow though, series direcetor Toshifumi Akai has made magic happen, and created a debut episode beyond belief. Having more action than anything else, it's full to the brim with impressive animation, creative storyboards, and outstanding supporting work.
Though, Akai certainly makes viewers aware of the potential of the story still, employing some incredibly impressive original content.
Tumblr media
It's through and through an outstanding debut episode, and certainly gave viewers plenty of food for thought. At the very least in my case, since I've had no contact with the manga, it fueled a great deal of discussion in my review at Animehouse.

Summary:
The protagonist (Ritsuka by default) is a newly-appointed member of the Organization for the Preservation of Human Order, Finis Chaldea, an organization of mages dedicated to preserving humanity led by Olga Marie Animusphere. One day, Chaldea is betrayed and most of the mages within are either dead or in critical condition after a series of explosions damages the base. With no other options, the protagonist is forced to "Rayshift" to an unknown timeline along with Mash Kyrielight and Olga to escape the danger. However, Mash is forced to fuse with an unknown Servant to stay alive, turning herself into a demi-Servant with a powerful shield ability.
After the group discovers the traitor, they find that he has used the powers of the Holy Grail created multiple Singularities throughout human history, thus putting humanity on the path to extinction. After the traitor banishes Olga and leaves the rest of Chaldea for dead, Dr. Roman, Mash, and the Protagonist must use what's left to fix the Singularities and stop the traitor from erasing humanity from history.

Wind Breaker Episode 2: The Hero of My Dreams
Tumblr media
First of all, just soak in the incredible model quality and accuracy of this short (but very sweet) sequence for Suo. Despite its simplicity, the layout of the scene makes it a very difficult cut to deliver on, especially to this quality.
With that out of the way, Wind Breaker episode 2 proves that the series has a world more to offer than simple eye-popping action for the viewer. Under the hood there's a greater story, stronger character dynamics, and plenty of humor.
The second episode helps temper expectations a great deal, and provide proof that it has the ability to go the distance.
Of course, there's lots more like series director Toshifumi Akai doing the storyboards for the second episode, there being only 4 animation directors, or little bits about how Kotoha plays into Sakura's journey, but you'll find all of that in the full review at Animehouse.
