Hello! Some Crawly babies! The caterpillars were dangling from trees by a silk thread and I nearly walked into some! Any clue as to why?
Also, is it hard to tell which kind of moths they will all turn into?
And any ideas as to what the little green beetle is? They were very handsome! Thanks for answering! Found in London UK :)
Well, they could just be moving along to find a new spot to feed or pupate, but there are also some species of caterpillars who, when threatened by a predator or whatever, will fling themselves from wherever they’re hanging out and hang from a line of silk until the danger has passed, and then climb back up it.
Caterpillars can be hard to ID since so many of them look the same! But I’ll do my best~
1. Weirdly distinct yet I couldn’t find any that looked like this dude! Would be interested if anyone recognizes it 2. Speckled wood butterfly 3. Geometer moth, probably a mottled umber 4 & 5. Probably both the same thing? Perhaps Tortrix viridana but could also be Depressaria pimpinellae. There are a surprising amount of species that look like these! 6. Too small and vaguely green to ID :( 7. And the beetle is a bit blurry, but looks like a weevil, likely a green immigrant leaf weevil
Hope that was helpful! Thanks for sharing all these pals :)

Took a little convincing for my camera to focus on this tiny caterpillar that I came across yesterday hanging from the tree right in front of my face, gently moving in the breeze, rather than everything else in the frame. I think it'll eventually be a Green Oak Tortrix moth (Tortrix viridana). Floating somewhere between the Wrath of Khan and the excellent Mistlight GMed by @buffwoto on @tablestoryrpg (the latest episode of which I was listening to as I was taking this), I find them absolutely skin crawling but also fascinating. The fact that they appear at first to be floating in midair in exactly the way bricks don't doesn't help. There's a layer of sensory confusion that really gets to me. Photo came out OK though so there is that. https://www.tablestory.tv/mistlight/ ______ #today #todayis #diary #calendar #photooftheday #lockdownproject #nature #naturephotography #woodland #woodlandphotography #insect #insectphotography #moth #mothphotography #Green #Oak #Tortrix #greenoaktortrix #Tortrixviridana #caterpillar #lepidoptera #spring #surrey #uk #panasonic #lumixg9 #lumixuk https://www.instagram.com/p/CPNy0xeHewl/?utm_medium=tumblr
