Okay so I just finished watching Damsel on Netflix (it was fine, solid hero movie), and is it just me or does Millie Bobby Brown's last look fit Alanna the Lioness perfectly or what?
Like I just wish there were more than like three shots of it, because I would use the hell out of this fancast.

All of us Tortall fandom trash literally anytime we see anything with any kind of red-headed actress in it:
“Gotta break out my purple pen in photoshop!”
(but, like, wouldn’t Natasha Lyonne make a pretty good Alanna though? She’s got the swagger and the style to pull off Alanna I think)

Ten Female Characters Meme
LIST YOUR 10 FAVOURITE FEMALE CHARACTERS FROM 10 FANDOMS, AND TAG 10 PEOPLE
Tagged by @jonquilclegane
(I'm bad at picking favorites and ranking things, but I've sure got a list of ten characters!) ^_^;
---
Disney Animated Canon - Belle
One of my first favorite characters, really.
---
MCU - Agent Peggy Carter
Did I agree, artistically, with Steve's ending in Endgame? No. But does my enjoyment of the ship override my writing sensibilities? ...Also, no. Peggy deserved better.
---
Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood - Izumi Curtis
I mean, what can I say about the character writing in FMA/FMAB that hasn't already been said? Izumi is a fantastically complex mentor character, and a banner example of how you can write someone who is badass and soft at the same time.
---
Star Wars - General Leia Organa-Solo, Princess of Alderaan
Leia is the Mal'ary'ush. I could read Tumblr meta about her and her journey as a Jedi and a politician all day.
---
Babylon 5 - Ambassador Delenn
youtube
(Relevant dialogue:)
Delenn: This is Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari. Babylon 5 is under our protection. Withdraw or be destroyed! Earth Force Officer: Negative! We have authority here. Do not force us to engage your ship. Delenn: Why not? Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari Fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else!
Ambassador Delenn was a huge influence on how I write Sigyn, if you couldn't tell. Graceful, intelligent, more likely to use manipulation and soft power than threat of force but 100% will wreck your shit if you press her, and eventually turns every man around her into a simp. XD
---
Pirates of the Caribbean - King Elizabeth Swann-Turner
Another one where, really, what can I say that hasn't already been said? I will say, though, that I am more likely to watch At World's End than Pirates 1 if I want to watch one of the Pirates movies.
---
Kim Possible - Kim Possible
One of my first OCs was based on her character. I still work with the OC, but there's been some significant drift between Kim and the OC.
---
American Girl - Samantha Parkington
In the Ambassador Delenn/Princess Leia category of "Ladies do not start fights, but they can finish them". Slight handicap in that she's 10, but eventually, one gets over that.
---
The Legends of Tortall - Lady Kelandry of Mindelan
(Book only character, so using popular fancast of Gwendoline Christie as a face claim)
Tamora Pierce is an excellent writer of women characters, but Kel was the protagonist that I found myself most attached to, surprisingly. Physically, I'm much more like Alanna, and I tend to gravitate towards characters with cool powers, but I love the story of the Protector of the Small quartet the most, and Lady Knight is one of my frequent rereads.
---
A Series of Unfortunate Events - Violet Baudelaire
Checks very many boxes for me - Smart? Yes. Adventurous? Yes. Takes matters into her own hands when she must? Absolutely.
---
Tagging: @goodliest, anyone else who wants it! ^_^;

So my headcanon for Mithros has always been Djimon Hounsou, who I think would look absolutely appropriately godly in his golden armour. But I just had a thought - Beyoncé as the Great Mother Goddess? Maybe silly but I like it!
I mean…

Tortall Fancast Series - Thom of Trebond
As children, Thom and Alanna were so much alike in face and body shape as to be mistaken for each other, if dressed alike. The only distinguishing feature of the twins at that time was the length of their hair. Both were short and skinny, with copper hair and purple eyes. When Alanna visited him at age eighteen she commented on his beard and height, suggesting he grew up to be taller than her. (x)
Okay so I already know this from my ASoIaF blog, but damn, finding redheads in medieval clothes is hard. Also, canonically Thom died at 20, but it's hard to find teenage fancasts, so I've included some who are technically too old but fit the vibe.
KEREM AÇARSÖZ - SEHZADE SELIM (MAGNIFICENT CENTURY)
Açarsöz seems to be 8-10 years old, although I cannot find a birthdate for him. He plays a young Ottoman prince in Magnificent Century. It can be somewhat difficult to navigate footage if you don't speak Turkish, but all episodes are readily available online, mostly on youtube. Costume design is distinctly Ottoman, but some of it works as general medieval European.
GABRIEL AND TRISTAN HARLAND - YOUNG CNUT AND ESGAR (THE LAST KINGDOM)
So there's not much footage of either of these kids, and in at least 1/3 of it they've got knives held to their throats, but I included them because they're identical twins with great vibes for Thom and Alanna at the beginning of SotL. The only source for their age I could find puts them at 10-11 filming The Last Kingdom, and while I'm not sure how reliable it is, that looks about right.
YIGIT ÜST - SEHZADE SELIM (MAGNIFICENT CENTURY)
Üst plays an older version of Açarsöz's character on Magnificent Century. I couldn't find an age for him, but he seems to have been in his early/mid teens during filming. He's often in a turban, but when he's not, he's got great hair for Thom. He shares Thom's dignified-and-broody vibe, too, which I like.
RUAIRI O'CONNOR - HENRY VIII (THE SPANISH PRINCESS)
O'Connor was in his late 20s when filming The Spanish Princess. There is ample footage of him both clean-shaven and with a beard. Since he's playing a king, his clothes are mostly too lavish for Thom, but they can work if you pick your footage carefully, and Henry VIII definitely lends himself to Thom's mercurial nature.
EDDIE REDMAYNE - JACK JACKSON (PILLARS OF THE EARTH)
Redmayne was also in his late 20s in this role. His hair is more auburn than copper, although it varies by shot. Clothing is 12th century English, and Redmayne definitely has Thom's brooding vibe.
TOM HIDDLESTON - HAL/HENRY V (THE HOLLOW CROWN)
So Hiddleston's character in The Hollow Crown is basically nothing at all like Thom, but there are still moments the vibe feels right. He's a primary character in three episodes, so there's ample footage of him (both clean-shaven and with a short beard!) At roughly 30 during filming he's far older than Thom ever got, but I still like him as a fancast.
If you've got any additions, or any requests for other characters to do, please let me know! The full series can be found here.

13 and 15!
13. Pick a book you would adapt for the screen, given unlimited budget and creative freedom.
I mean, my kneejerk answer is undoubtedly Gaudy Night, because I will die mad about how terribly adapted the BBC version was. The thing is, though, with how complex the emotional stakes are in the plot, you’d need to cast both Peter and Harriet perfectly for any adaptation to truly succeed, regardless of how much money is poured into every other aspect of the project. Neither of my personal fancast actors would be able to do it since one is dead and the other too old. I don’t really know any actors that both fit the physical profile and could pull off the role, which may just be lack of knowledge on my part, but... it would take rare talent indeed. And if you’re giving me, as stated, unlimited budget and creative freedom to adapt ONE book from page to screen, I’d want to do the book justice, you know? If I couldn’t do it right then I’d much rather just do another book entirely. Gaudy Night means too much to me to create a version that was less than perfect.
So, if I had to pick something that I still love, but which isn’t as fundamentally complicated, I’d go with one of Tamora Pierce’s Tortall collection for sure. I know there’s talk of a TV show happening [fingers crossed] but I also suspect that’s likely to be centred around the Lioness, and surprisingly enough I read that series pretty late in my explorations of Pierce’s work. It’s fantastic, but it’s also not the one my soul imprinted on, you know? I’d love to have a crack at Kel’s story in the Protector of the Small quartet for good old fashioned knight stuff and the ability to add tantalizing hints of Lore from the other series. And if we’re talking straight “hhhhhhh literary lizard brain approves” it’d be Aly and her adventures in Trickster’s Choice and Trickster’s Queen. I’m always a slut for a good espionage story, and to have the protagonist be a teenage girl? HELL YEAH. SIGN ME UP IMMEDIATELY.
15. What’s a cover that fooled you?
Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. Birds and art and complex emotions! How could I not love it? Well. It took me like five tries to make it all the way through the novel, and I still don’t understand what all the hype was about.
#if someone wants to explain the appeal of the goldfinch to me please do#I'm genuinely curious bc maybe I'm just missing something#meanderings0ul#asked and answered
