Comm Students Gear Up for ComMusical
The Communication Department of Adamson University will be holding ComMusical on May 24, 2024, at the Adamson Theater with the theme: ComMusical 2024: “Tanghala’y Magniningning sa Tinig ng Sining”,  the ComMusical is under the course of Introduction of Theater Arts.
The ComMusical event aims to give relevance to the lessons that are discussed throughout the semester by turning them into a reality, turning students developing their skills in theater arts. The event will display three different stories and genres.
“Gusto ko Maging Diyosa” by Sinagtala Productions is a musical fantasy that tackles social and contemporary issues. It is a one-hour-long musical written by Rebecca Dabalos, composed of ten original songs by Marlito Sarmiento, and directed by Jehu Adolfo.
The director of the “Gusto ko Maging Diyosa” shared his insights on their musical play, “Taking on a fantasy musical is very challenging. However, our group was very determined that we do it since we will be only doing commusical once. Even though it is a fantasy musical, we still want the audience to be able to relate it to what they are experiencing. Thus we choose fantasy to inspire and bring color to the lives of each character.” he said.
On the other hand, Hiwaga Theater Works would present their musical “Bahay-Bahayan”. It talks about Mental Health Awareness following the story of a newly hired nurse named Ana and how she will build up her relationship with her patients by facing some competitors in the same work. The story was a piece with a combination of comedy and drama. It is directed by Yuri Castor, written by Niña Tosoc, and music and lyrics by Mike Anthony Bicoy.
The Hiwaga Theater Works chose this genre so that it would be suitable for audiences in any age. “Apart from wanting to bring something new din sa ComMusical, another inspiration namin is yung mga manunuod ng play namin.(another inspiration of our group is the viewers who will watch out play). Since, iba't ibang tao yung nasa audience (Since, there are different people in the audiences) -- different age brackets, may mga magulang(there would be a parents), mga kapatid (siblings), at yung iba galing din sa ibang departments (and others would be from different departments). Magandang opportunity 'to para magbigay ng istorya na may mensahe,(It is the good opportunity to give the story a message)  and to make a statement. For us, ComMusical is the perfect platform to bring awareness, break the stigma, and open the discussion regarding mental health.” stated by Niña Tosoc
Lastly, “Hacienda Marilao” produced by Diwar Productions, will feature two genres of theater plays, consisting of comedy and drama. The story revolves around an underpaid farmer and the struggles they face. It is directed by Cydee Cabato, with music and lyrics by Zyen Alceth Torrevillas, and written by Andrian Renz Espino.

I learned from a post of my colleague, Prof. Gerry T Los Baños, that Prof. Carlos Ojeda Aureus (1947-2024) had passed. Caloy was a retired professor in literature and previous holder of the Diamond Jubilee Professorial Chair at the UP Department of English and Comparative Literature. Armed with experiences as a scholar at El Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana (ICI) en Madrid, he taught Latin and Spanish at UP's Department of European Languages. “Nagueños” is his highly acclaimed collection of short fiction on the people and places across Naga. “The Late Comer,” his story, won first prize in the 1996 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. His other stories, “Chinita,” Flake of Fire, Bodies of Light,” “Wings,” “Typhoon,” and especially “The night train does not stop here anymore,” also deserve some more critical attention. Also in dire need of revisiting is Caloy’s The Catholic Imagination, published in the inaugural issue of Humanities Diliman (Vol. 1, no. 1, Jan. 2000 - Jun. 2000: 92-108).
His Ph.D. dissertation in UP entitled “Towards a Dialogical Reading of W. B. Yeats' Vision” (1992) is a pioneering contribution to Anglo-American literary studies from a unique postcolonial subject-position. Together with Retired Professor Lilia Fuentebella Realubit, Professors Paz Verdades Santos, and Tito Valiente, and supported by Naga City Mayor (1988-1998, 2001-2010) Jessie Robredo, Naga City Administrator (now Representative) Gabriel Bordado and Ateneo de Naga President (1988-1999) Fr. Raul Bonoan S.J., Caloy co-organized the first-ever Bikol Writers Workshop in Naga (1993). The workshop proved to be a catalyst for the resurgence of Bikol writing many years later. Caloy was proud of his experiences as a 1970 Silliman National Writers' Workshop fellow with National Artist Ricky Lee, Albert Casuga, Conrad de Quiros, and Wilfredo Pascua Sanchez. He frequently reminisced about Dumaguete and his writing friends in Silliman, including Francis Macansantos, Christine Godinez Ortega, Anthony Tan, and Rowena Tiempo Torrevillas. I will never forget bumping into Caloy over lunch at Casaa, where we purchased takeaway food during the late 1980s and early 1990s, or having coffee and meals with Dr Realubit in UP Diliman's Chateau Verde and his mom, Tita Teresing Ojeda Aureus, around Naga's Plaza Quince Martires and Plaza Rizal during the 1990s. On 19 August 2023, writer and translator Victor Dennis T. Nierva organized a walking tour of Naga based on iconic landmarks identified by Caloy in his Nagueños. Before he passed away, he was working on the biography of Dr. Realubit. Despite his brilliance, Caloy remained kind and very humble. I am sure his students will miss him.

CELA Women’s Volleyball bagged the Gold with a 3-0 record
College of Education and Liberal Arts Women’s Volleyball ended the championship game versus College of Science Women’s Volleyball with the final scores of 25-21, 25-10, 25-22 at the Adamson University SV Court.
The Adamson University Student Government held the Sportsfest 2024 from April 3, 2024 to April 6, 2024. The CELA Women’s Volleyball enters the championship game on April 6, 2024 .
During the first set of the game, both teams showed off their hard defense which gave the game long rallies. In the middle of the game, CELA designated a play that made the score far from the opponent's team. The first set ended with 25-21 in favor of team CELA.
In the second set, the COS team changed the team composition by letting other players play. This is their strategy to get a set; however, the players of CELA were already familiar with the play of the COS players which is why the CELA easily ended the set. Some of the players from COS fired up due to numerous errors that were called by the referee.
The third set was a crucial and intense one for both teams. At the start of the game, the COS players showed some good defense. The CELA players had service errors that made the COS team led by 2 points. In the middle of the match, the CELA players played aggressively and fast, to end the match and the last point goes to team CELA courtesy of the powerful spike of Arhiana Khatrie Abiog. In the end, the Most Valuable Player of the championship game was #10 Torrevillas, 3rd year student of the Communication Department.
