Any Greek mythology buffs recognize this scene? I’m guessing the horse is Pegasus!
This etching is from our current auction. It’s by Australian-Canadian artist, Fred Finley (1894-1968). When Finley arrived in Canada following the First World War and an art-study tour of Europe, he joined Brigdens Limited (a commercial art firm in Toronto) to work as a graphic artist. His circle included his fellow workers at Brigdens, and his colleagues at the Ontario Society of Artists, Arts and Letters Club, and Ontario College of Art. He produced a wide body of work including war posters, illustrations for children’s literature, murals, paintings, and prints.
I love the composition of this scene. There’s so much going on; you can feel the emotion from the crowd and the desperation of the figure on the horse. Perhaps this was from one of Finley’s illustration projects. I’d love to know the rest of the story…
