I have very strong opinions about disaster preparation as someone who lives in a tornado zone, where evacuation is NOT an option for anyone and the only way to definitely survive is to 1) be in a building that WON'T just get picked up AND 2) have a basement, cellar, or specialized tornado shelter.

The simple fact is that the majority of fatalities in tornadoes are people living in mobile homes/trailers and those deaths could be reduced massively if the government built tornado shelters in high risk areas. But there's been very, very little effort to do that and tornadoes are just getting stronger and more deadly while poor people are left to huddle in our bathtubs, listening to the sirens and thinking about easily we could die.

#you can't evacuate in a tornado #there's very little if any warning and tornadoes are just way too unpredictable #they also don't last long. they form. they hit. they vanish.#it only takes minutes in a lot of cases #and now we're seeing more clusters forming together #so trying to flee from one tornado can result in going straight in the path of another #or even getting hit by the first one if it changes its path #and you do NOT want to be in a car when a tornado hits

To sound like pretty much every other person on this godforsaken planet: I'm so tired of living through unprecedented historical events.

#i live in southeast florida #and it has been constant tornado warnings all day #and there was a major one that hit within 5 minutes of my house #i'm lucky - my house is fine and i still have power but it was literally a case of 'you could hear it going past'#the news footage is literally showing my exact route to work #this was a wedge tornado #we don't usually get those here #and that's actually incredibly horrifying #the meteorologists have said several times that this is the single worst tornado outbreak that south florida has ever experienced #i'm scared enough over here so i cannot even imagine what it's like on the west coast right now #hurricane milton #just kinda venting

this is gonna be me braving going outside during a tornado watch to smoke cigarettes tonight

#you can tell a native-born midwesterner by the level of concern we have for tornadoes. out of towners get spooked over drills. interstate #migrants from the east or the west get paranoid over watches. i check my notifs then but the only time i stay hunkered down in the basement #for hrs at a time w supplies is during a warning. i've known ppl who go out in the rain in lawnchairs to watch distant twisters 💀 i'm not #THAT insane but i am a touch blasé after living here my entire life. also this house has a basement so it's not like we have to drive to a #shelter anymore. it doesn't take longer than a min to find shelter when a watch becomes a warning. i do get my pets down when it starts to #turn ugly during a watch bc getting 5 animals into the basement quickly if they declare a warning sounds like a nightmare #all that said: i'm gonna get SO coated in ash and rain. my cig going out is the only thing that might make me go in #len speaks

My post about storm chasers and people not being familiar with them being a profession was bc multiple people in my notes in another post was like "who doesnt know what storm chasers are?" so I made my post about how storm chasers as a profession are mostly only in the US so like, so it's actually not that weird for people to not know what storm chasers are and some little fucking weirdo decided to read that post in a really negative light

#Also someone was saying that tornado warnings are issued by radar which.... Yes I never said they WEREN'T #I said a lot of times active tornado warnings go out especially with tornado sirens going off is that a tornado has been confirmed #Bc eyes have been on it #Bc while there's a lot that radar CAN DO #Like there are things to look for on radar that USUALLY coincide with a tornado touching down #But they don't ALWAYS mean a tornado has touched down #Radar is still very limited in that regard #Like hook echoes just show rotation which super cells have already #There isn't always the debris cloud on radar bc not all tornados are violent enough to through enough debris that high #And yet they're still strong enough to injure ppl if they get caught outside in it #Radar is better than it used to be but it cannot DEFINITIVELY confirm a tornado #Period #Tornado watches are declared by radar #But ACTIVE tornado warnings??? Those are declared when a tornado is confirmed on the ground #Which can only be done when someone witnesses them with their eyeballs and calls it in.#Like I literally just watched something about where radar falls short WRT tornados

i can't believe i spent two weeks in a country infamous for its rain and ill-tempered weather and it rained more back home in Texas than it did on me in Iceland

#IT'S STILL RAINING. WE GET IT YOU CAN STOP NOW #im tired of getting 50 flash flood warnings a day because there's no place for the water to go anymore #i came back home and it looked like a derecho or tornado hit my street #like. cars houses etc crushed by fallen trees from one of the storms #there was hundreds of thousands without power. some people may still not have power??#like it’s been exhausting and i wasnt even here for 2 weeks and i'm sick of it!#i like rain but the every day severe storms take a toll #oh more 60-80 mph winds? more softball hail? more tornado warnings? another 3 inches of rain after the 2 inches yesterday?

#so. i was warned that increasing my one med would cause my estrogen levels to drop #being that i still have my ovaries this was slightly concerning since i already take estrogen bc my body goes nah #it is not a small amount of drop. no. this is the second round of Seven Days In Hell and it is not good #it is not good my friends. mood swings is more like mood tornado. might get hit with a cow. might be a semi. might be a singular raindrop #i cannot fuckin concentrate and every noise is physically painful and the only reason i have not started #cutting again is because i have been supervised.#i wish they had taken my ovaries. i could have went through menopause and not have this maybe.#gonna go cry some more bc there is electricity making noise. and cry some more bc my tears burn like acid #the witch speaks
