Okay weird request time
I figure Tumblr is a good place for weird requests since SOMEONE out there must have a special interest in this
I am looking for kid-friendly weather phenomenon videos
My sister's kid is in LOVE with weather at the moment (BIG weather)- tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, tsunamis, that kind of thing. If you happen to know of videos that are kid friendly (he's 4 so), could you drop me a link here or in ask/DM? I would also take any toy recs that might include this kind of thing (he's got the little bottle connectors that you can make tornado tubes with).
Thank you!
#weather#hurricane#tornado#tsunami#volcano#i think after the hurricane came close to him recently#he's become aware weather can be scary#and copying his parents who watched the Asheville footage#and commented about the damage done#so he's watching videos and commenting about the damage#it's interesting to see him mirror like that#anyway coping mechanisms are great

This is by far the dumbest [cj-related] thing I have ever drawn.
[context under the cut]
kinda shitty/low effort sorry 😭 but I wanted to pay tribute to this comment under the CJ drum covers because I think about and reference it with my friends constantly and it’s so fucking funny to me.

I think it’s the pure panic for me. The fact that I can read this and feel this person shaking in fear. It’s the proper punctuation and capitalization juxtaposed with the contents of the comment. It’s the fact that he’s . Not even bald lmao.
Shoutout wuvsong for permanently planting this in my brain.
#appalling mustelid tornado#<- I guess?? I feel. weird putting this under my art tag lol#chonny jash#cj drum covers#anyways uhh. can I recover this dumbassery by saying it’s my treat to myself for aro-spec awareness week?#happy ASAW btw :3

I hope everyone that was in the path of the storms last night seeing this are okay! We thankfully only had wind and a thunderstorm here. I did stay awake until like 5:30 in the morning because I was freaking out like all night (ask my boyfriend lol). I hope everyone in the highest risk areas today in Dixie Alley are okay! I know this isn't a normal post for me, but I know they're anticipating a huge tornado outbreak down there today, just wanna send good vibes to everyone in the path!

The little extra stickers I received make me so happy. These are all from a little small buisness called Two Storms. It's a buisness front that focuses on bridging the gap between severe weather awareness and the mental health aspects of what severe weather can do from storm anxiety to ptsd. Since weather releated mental health isn't talked about that often. And each purchase you make you can choose which 3 organizations part of your purchase can go to that she has on her site. And the owner has a YT channel named Carly Anna WX. She focuses on in depth videos about significant tornado events :) should totally check out two storms or her channel if any of it interests you the way it does me

i tried to make a more sentimental post but as someone with the weather (and by extension space weather) as my special interest i am so so so so happy seeing all the posts from people who got to experience this rare solar storm <3 it makes me so happy when people get to witness how beautiful (space) weather can be!!!
#i had a whole anecdote ready about how i got a book about the weather in 2003 in the netherlands bc a hot air balloon knocked over our fence#and how i have been fascinated by the pics from that solar event#(and also by the description of a tornado that hit a farm 1km away from ours in june 2003)#but i am too fried from my job today bc the island shifts are always around 12 hours#but trust me i love the weather and i want to share it with others.... reverse gatekeeping etc etc#i have also been thinking i should make more weather posts probably so that people are aware of the funky things happening in their area#but that might be more EU centered#ALSO wow photography really got miles further since 2003 bc the pics from this solar storm have been soooo much better

eregyrn-falls replied to your post: “I've been watching a lot of tornado related...”
tornadoes are something that terrified me as a little kid, no doubt due to television. (i can remember a nightmare from early childhood about a tornado.) i grew up in eastern PA, where at the time we didn't have any. so it was the IDEA of them that terrified me. honestly, it still does. i would very very VERY much prefer never to live in a place that gets them with any regularity.
i realize they're old hat for you, and that's true for anyone who lives with a natural phenomenon. you come to respect it, rather than be terrified of it. but for me, i can't get past the suddenness of them. the fact that they can strike in the middle of the night when you might have almost no warning at all. while they aren't completely unpredictable (obviously there are observable weather fronts and stuff), to me, they feel that way.
the natural disasters that i can deal with are hurricanes, and blizzards. both of those are things you see coming for DAYS. you can get out ahead of them. you can take steps to protect your house and your pets and yourself. (i mean, both of those in theory, assuming you have the means and the financial situation.) earthquakes and tornadoes are too sudden for me and that's why they scare me.
oh you're not the only one who's had a tornado nightmare! one of the worst nightmares I've had in my entire life was a tornado nightmare!
I think that what allows me to continue living in a tornado-prone area despite my general anxiety over like, idk, life, is two things: 1) tornado predictions give a crazy amount of warning nowadays, and 2) I live in a tornado-prone area, I've had a few close calls, but it's not like I live in Moore, Oklahoma lmao.
most tornado warnings aren't even that a tornado has been spotted by someone or confirmed by radar. most of them are "radar indicated rotation", meaning that a thunderstorm with a rotating cloud has been detected on radar. which doesn't mean tornado. it does mean a storm capable of a tornado and more likely to produce one, but it doesn't mean a tornado. or even a funnel cloud!
very VERY rarely are people caught off guard by a tornado anymore. FEMA says the average amount of time between a tornado warning being issued and the tornado or storm striking the area is 10 to 15 minutes. plenty of time to grab your emergency kit and go to your safe place. we have tornado watches if the weather is favorable and often know days in advance whether we'll be hit by weather conducive for tornadogenesis.
and even when we don't know in advance, like I said, we still have plenty of warning! about a week ago, I woke up to sirens, then ten minutes later, heard them again. which I knew likely meant a tornado warning had been issued (the first time, I checked my phone and saw it was severe thunderstorm and just rolled over to sleep some more lol). and before I could check, my phone went off, blaring the same alarm as an Amber Alert. which I knew 100% meant tornado warning. and it was. my roommate and I had time to use the bathroom, grab the dogs and emergency bag, and even take the dogs outside really quick to pee before the storm hit us! and we didn't have a tornado watch in effect. there weren't supposed to be conditions for tornadoes that morning.
and like I said, I don't live in Moore. if I did, I wouldn't even DREAM of living somewhere without a basement. as it is, I fucking hate that my best option is a hallway on the first floor. we've gotten tornadoes before. some have gotten close to me. one literally lifted over a building I was in. but thankfully, we're not as prone as other locations in my state; the storms tend to lose some steam by the time they reach here. and the tornadoes that do spawn tend to be lower level, again, because of the storms losing steam by the time they get here.
I know a lot about the science of tornadoes and grew up in Tornado Alley (or adjacent, depending on what graphic you use), so I know that our current methods are so flipping good at protecting us. we DO have warning. not as much as for a hurricane, but generally speaking, enough to, like I said, use the bathroom and grab the pets. earthquakes...yeah those don't typically give much warning, but that's something scientists are working on. buildings in earthquake-prone areas are built to withstand them (much like many buildings in tornado-prone areas are built to withstand severe storms), and people grow up learning what to do in an earthquake. (which is find a table to hide under, essentially, btw.)
no, what scares ME the most are wildfires.
you're flat-out fucked over by those.
#eregyrn-falls#I recognize that I wrote out a long thing and likely didn't change your mind#tornadoes ARE scary. I get scared when I know there's a confirmed tornado near me.#last year what wound up being an EF4 was headed for the town I live in#I was watching its track and hearing the sirens go off and seeing reports of it being bad#I was on my phone with my parents the entire time trying not to completely freak out and failing#luckily the tornado didn't make it to us#and even more luckily no one was killed#but like. straddling the line of awareness and fear is really difficult and I don't always succeed#even after a lifetime of tornadoes!#BUT SERIOUSLY WILDFIRES ARE SO MUCH WORSE HOLY SHIT#I can handle ''shelter in place'' WAY better than ''YOU HAVE TWO MINUTES TO LEAVE OR YOU WILL DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH''#response

love watching weather science videos but like. why am i 1000x more interested in tornadoes over hurricanes. they're both spinning air
#we wanted to be a stormchaser when we were younger#nowadays we have to worry about our health too much to have such a risky high-stress high reaction time job#been watching nothing but tornado history videos for days it's one of our intermittent special interests#stemming from the weather science workbook we OBSESSED over as a kid#would read that thing cover to cover multiple times a week. i was the kind of autistic who would read the Encyclopedia for fun#i actually had a fave encyclopedia entry as a kid and now i cannot fucking remember it 😭#i also learned what sex was through the encyclopedia 😭😭😭😭 was legit my first exposure to the concept#but like even though we watch A TON of weather videos including tons of stuff about thunderstorms and blizzards#(thunderstorms my fucking beloved. favourite weather pattern ever. cumulonimbus my bestest friend <3)#most of the videos we watch are mostly tornado videos. and hurricane videos feel boring to us#even though hurricanes are wayyy more powerful#tornadoes are still fucking powerful it's just more. concentrated#tornadoes to me feel Targeted like. that's weather that says Fuck YOU in particular actually#especially multivortex tornadoes where you can literally have two houses both in the middle of the storm at once#and still only one of them gets destroyed#or like pictures you can see of demolished houses with their mailbox in the yard simply untouched#i like to watch tornado videos bc they help me. prepare. just in case#our state gets hit with tornadoes pretty frequently though not as much as tornado alley#and i like to know all the information for sheltering and what to do in the event of a collapsed building and such#i have a little survival kit in the bathroom just in case with like basic first aid and a radio and bottled water#bc thats probably the safest room for me to be in since it's not near any external walls and also hiding in the tub is usually good#also in the event you're caught on the road during a tornado#DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE shelter under a bridge or overpass#those work basically like straws where as the air gets pushed through it goes MUCH faster and gets dangerous way easier#as far as im aware the best place to be is in a ditch or hole if you absolutely cannot find a shelter in time#if you do not have a car with roll protection then being in your car will probably be worse#NOT AN EXPERT THO pls verify this information on your own if you think it is relevant or necessary i have poor memory and can be stupid#i just know that overpasses are dangerous as hell

this is just an idle thought that i dont have the energy to articulate further, at least not right now, but man, seeing people accuse that tornado video of being AI just feels... indicative of something, i guess?
i feel like the worst possible time for genAI to rise to the prominence it did is right after a globally isolating pandemic that also caused an immense push into conspiracy thought for a huge number of people. a massively traumatizing event that affected the entire planet, that was filled with information coming in extremely quickly and statements being made and redacted at the drop of a hat, something that shook the entire foundation of many parts of life for people. something that was also reacted to with such cruelty by so so many people and still continues to be.
and then suddenly we have the ability to just artificially generate any image, any sound, any audio, any voice saying anything we want. on demand. often for free.
and people are looking at video footage of human beings risking their lives to obtain real, actual information for the purpose of saving other lives, and they go "this looks fake, i bet its AI".
#txts#i guess its particularly striking to me because like. thats just what tornados look like?? when has it ever not been???#and i suppose it also ties into this terminal lack of awareness and curiosity about the world around us#that i think ive gone on rants about before. i cant remember#people have no knowledge of the world around them and are so ready to discount things as fake.#and i do think this feeds into conspiracy thought as well. 100%.

Several tornadoes touched down in my mom's town and knocked down some trees, so she's unsure if she can get home. It also knocked the electricity out which means no A/C and in the North Carolina summer that's bad. While my mom can at least get out of her house, that doesn't help her cats or the birds. Here's hoping the electricity gets fixed quickly.
My grandparents may have also lost electricity which is yikes.
#I'm feeling a bit of irony that i spent 40 minutes under the stairs last night because of a tornado warning nearby#and yet my hometown in another state got hit#yeah sure let the weather aware tornado prepper person avoid the severe weather#anecdotes by peachdoxie

We are currently underground in the storm shelter here in Gadsden (Alabama), with a confirmed tornado on the ground near Clanton, AL. Don’t worry: we are safe and sound. But this is the weather situation to take seriously. Be prepared to seek shelter if warranted.
