In 1914, Tora Vega Holmström was invited to show ten paintings at the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö. But her work including 'The Violinist,' was considered 'brutal and insufficiently feminine.' Her style of painting puts her alongside German and Russian expressionists, including Alexej von Jawlensky and Wassily Kandinsky.

MWW Artwork of the Day (3/15/22) Tora Vega Holmström (Swedish, 1880-1967) Främlingar (Strangers)(c. 1913–14) Oil on canvas Moderna Museet, Stockholm
As part of her work on the painting "Strangers" from 1913–14, Holmström asked the mother and son of an Italian family of immigrant workers in Stockholm’s harbour to model. The painting was begun in the autumn of 1913 for an exhibition in London the following year. The composition, with the young boy gazing into the future and the statuesque woman, has something monumental about it, while at the same time characterized by rootlessness and vulnerability. It is likely that Tora Vega Holmström, together with the modernists on the continent, was seriously interested in the “Other” -– in the unknown. Many of her works bear witness to a strong interest in other cultures, and several of her most famous works have traces of impressions from her travels through North Africa and Europe.

Tora Vega Holmström (2 marts, 1880 - 1967) was a Swedish Modernist artist and a member of the group “De 12″ (The Twelve). She had studied in Gothenburg and abroad and traveled widely through Europe and North Africa. She experimented with Cubism quite early on, and later went into almost abstract, colorist art.
