Provide food, aid to starving 1.2 lakh sex workers: SC to govts
Provide food, aid to starving 1.2 lakh sex workers: SC to govts NEW DELHI: Saddened by the plight of sex workers rendered jobless across the country because of the lockdown and exodus of migrant workers, the Supreme Court on Monday told the Centre and states to urgently consider providing them relief in the form of dry rations, monetary assistance as well as masks, soaps and sanitisers. “Without waiting for our orders, see if you can do something,” a bench of Justices L N Rao and Hemant Gupta told additional solicitor general Rupinder Singh Suri and counsel for states after NGO ‘Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee’, an organisation run by sex workers, narrated the pitiable condition of their co-workers across the country. Appearing for the NGO, senior advocate Anand Grover told the bench that a survey among 1.2 lakh sex workers in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana threw up worrying statistics — “96% of sex workers (1,15,374 women and transgenders) had lost their source of earning; of these, 71% reported not having any other means of livelihood to secure basic needs; among those who had other modes of earning, 33% did not have enough to eat three meals a day”. Amicus curiae Jayant Bhushan and Pijush K Roy informed the court that the plight of sex workers could be addressed to a large extent if they were provided ration cards without insisting on identity proof, as was directed by the court more than eight years ago. #topstories #topstoriesacqro #topstoriesacqroupdates #topstoriesonacqro #topstoriesupdates #updatesontopstoriesonacqro Read the full article

Russian vaccine in India: 1 in 7 have side-effects
Russian vaccine in India: 1 in 7 have side-effects The side effects noticed in the volunteers were found to be on the milder side. These are what medical experts call a vaccine's 'reactogenic' effects post administration, which tend to cause mild discomfort. Some of the symptoms which have been witnessed include fever, chills, muscle pain and soreness.Russian officials, tracking the study also mentioned that further dosing would help ascertain more observations. While 300 patients out of 40,000 selected ones have been successfully injected, the second dose will be given 21 days after the date of the first shot being provided. It should be noted that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine trials, considered to be a top contender in the global vaccine race were halted in the middle of phase III trials after a volunteer recorded 'neurological' complications.Russia, which plans to start mass immunization in the country beginning next year is eyeing to publish observatory data from phase III trials by October end or November. The vaccine, named Sputnik V has been excessively marred by controversies from the start. #topstories #topstoriesacqro #topstoriesacqroupdates #topstoriesonacqro #topstoriesupdates #updatesontopstoriesonacqro Read the full article

Getting permanent UNSC seat is top priority: India NEW DELHI: India on Thursday said it has accorded the "highest priority" to getting permanent membership in an expanded UN Security Council that reflects contemporary global realities. Minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan said India is actively engaged in the ongoing inter-governmental negotiations on reform of the powerful body at the UN and has been working alongside other like-minded countries and groupings. Muraleedharan was replying to a question on whether the government was making serious efforts to acquire a permanent seat for India at the UN Security Council (UNSC). "Government has accorded the highest priority to getting permanent membership for India in an expanded UN Security Council that reflects contemporary global realities," he said. "India in collaboration with other pro-reform countries has been consistently making efforts to build support among the UN member states for expansion of the UNSC, in both permanent and non-permanent categories," the minister said. At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution. There has been growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality. #topstories #topstoriesacqro #topstoriesacqroupdates #topstoriesonacqro #topstoriesupdates #updatesontopstoriesonacqro Read the full article

US: 5 Chinese men charged in mega hacking scheme, Indian networks hit
US: 5 Chinese men charged in mega hacking scheme, Indian networks hit WASHINGTON: The US Justice Department has charged five Chinese citizens with hacking over a 100 companies and institutions in America and abroad, including the Indian government's networks, and stealing valuable software data and business intelligence. Deputy US Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen on Wednesday announced that three indictments have been unsealed in the matter that collectively charge five Chinese nationals with computer hacking and two Malaysian nationals for helping some of those hackers target victims and sell the data. The Malaysian nationals were arrested on Sunday and the Chinese nationals have been declared fugitive, according to a Justice Department statement. Rosen severely criticised the Chinese government. "The Department of Justice has used every tool available to disrupt the illegal computer intrusions and cyberattacks by these Chinese citizens. Regrettably, the Chinese Communist Party has chosen a different path - of making China safe for cyber-criminals so long as they attack computers outside China and steal intellectual property helpful to China," the deputy attorney general said. "In about 2019, the conspirators compromised Government of lndia websites, as well as virtual private networks and database servers supporting the Government of India. The conspirators used VPS PROVIDER servers to connect to an Open VPN network owned by the Government of India," the indictment said. #topstories #topstoriesacqro #topstoriesacqroupdates #topstoriesonacqro #topstoriesupdates #updatesontopstoriesonacqro Read the full article

Poison was on water bottle: Kremlin critic's team
Poison was on water bottle: Kremlin critic's team MOSCOW: The nerve agent used to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was detected on an empty water bottle from his hotel room in the Siberian city of Tomsk, suggesting he was poisoned there and not at the airport as first thought, his team said on Thursday. Navalny fell violently ill on a domestic flight in Russia last month and was subsequently airlifted to Berlin for treatment. Laboratories in Germany, France and Sweden have established he was poisoned by a Novichok nerve agent, though Russia denies this and says it has seen no evidence. A video posted on Navalny's Instagram account showed members of his team searching the room he had just left in the Xander Hotel in Tomsk on August 20, an hour after they learned he had fallen sick in suspicious circumstances. "It was decided to gather up everything that could even hypothetically be useful and hand it to the doctors in Germany. The fact that the case would not be investigated in Russia was quite obvious," the post said. It showed his team bagging several empty bottles of "Holy Spring" mineral water, among other items, while wearing protective gloves. "Two weeks later, a German laboratory found traces of Novichok precisely on the bottle of water from the Tomsk hotel room," the post said. "And then more laboratories that took analyses from Alexei confirmed that that was what poisoned Navalny. Now we understand: it was done before he left his hotel room to go to the airport." #topstories #topstoriesacqro #topstoriesacqroupdates #topstoriesonacqro #topstoriesupdates #updatesontopstoriesonacqro Read the full article

Congress MPs from Punjab burn copies of farm bills
Congress MPs from Punjab burn copies of farm bills NEW DELHI: Congress MPs from Punjab burnt copies of the farm bills proposed by the government inside the Parliament complex on Thursday even as the party staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue. The Congress is opposed to the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 that the NDA government has proposed in Parliament during the ongoing monsoon session, replacing the ordinances issued by it earlier. Congress MPs Jasbir Singh Gill, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Gurjit Singh Aujla and Amar Singh burnt copies of the bills and said they will oppose the proposed legislations tooth and nail. They also wore black robes, saying "I am a farmer and farm labourer and don't betray me". They also criticised the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leadership for being in the BJP-led NDA even after these bills were proposed by the government. "We will oppose these bills from Parliament to panchayats. We also appeal to all MPs to vote against the bills, hearing the inner voice of their conscience for the sake of 'zameer and zameen' (conscience and land)," Gill said. Bittu said the BJP would be reduced to ashes if they play with the lives of farmers and their land. "The BJP will be finished if it tries to kill farmers and their mother (land)," he said. #topstories #topstoriesacqro #topstoriesacqroupdates #topstoriesonacqro #topstoriesupdates #updatesontopstoriesonacqro Read the full article

Rajnath Singh addresses Rajya Sabha: Key points
Rajnath Singh addresses Rajya Sabha: Key points NEW DELHI: Union defence minister Rajnath Singh briefed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday about the ongoing stand0ff between the Indian Army and China's People Liberation Army (PLA) at the Eastern Ladakh border. Singh spoke about the same in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. On Thursday, following Singh's statement, Rajya Sabha chairman, M Venkaiah Naidu advised the defence minister to address the concerns of the members of the House "maybe call them in your private chambers and talk to them as they all are our people and interests of the country is paramount". Congress had staged a walkout on Tuesday upon not being allowed to hold a discussion on India and China border standoff. Here are the highlights: * On 15 June, Col Santosh Babu, along with his 19 brave soldiers, made the supreme sacrifice in Galwan Valley towards the cause of defending the territorial integrity of India. Our PM himself went to Ladakh to boost the morale of forces. * China continues to be in illegal occupation of approx 38,000 sq kms in the Union Territory of Ladakh. In addition, under the so-called Sino-Pakistan 'Boundary Agreement' of 1963, Pakistan illegally ceded 5,180 sq. km. of Indian territory in PoK to China. * China too claims approximately 90,000 sq kms of Indian territory in the Eastern Sector of the India-China boundary in Arunachal Pradesh. * Chinese actions reflect a disregard of our various bilateral agreements. The amassing of the troops by China goes against the 1993 & 1996 Agreements. #topstories #topstoriesacqro #topstoriesacqroupdates #topstoriesonacqro #topstoriesupdates #updatesontopstoriesonacqro Read the full article
