Adult Taang in TLOK

Like come on, they were serving looks and justice. I can't believe the original creators of ATLA looked at them and didn't see the vision, the power couple they could have been... Like come on LOOK AT THEM!

As much as I hate what TLOK did to Aang and Toph's characters (Aang a neglectful father? Toph becoming a cop? Aang being a grouchy, serious man?) - they did kinda nail their adult designs. Like if I was Aang I wouldn't have gotten on my knees and begged for Toph's hand in marriage.

Also, in my delusional interpretation, Aang was reaching out for Toph in the last GIF. And the fact Yakone looked at Aang like that after he did what he did to Toph... Yakone knows! YAKONE KNOWS THEY'RE IN LOVE!

thinking about the avatar zuko au some more:

katara and sokka are already at the northern air temple when zuko, aang, and toph arrive. zuko nearly just turns around and leaves when he sees them. sokka won't stop boasting about it. see katara? he knew climbing this stupid mountain was worth it. they did show up!

aang is still horrified at what's been done to the northern air temple. he'd been so excited to see another one of his people's temples, only to find it so... different. he doesn't even need to have been here before to know that. it's obvious.

zuko's just deeply distracted. does anyone else see this ghost? just me? okay just making sure thanks.

(it's weird. he feels like he knows them from somewhere.)

sokka still helps the mechanist perfect his war balloon.

they all still find out he's been working for the fire nation. it's still aang who tells the war minister to leave.

zuko voice: should have known. this has war minister qin written all over it.

sokka, thinking: wow, he's really done his homework on the fire nation. and here i thought li wasn't serious about this at all.

time to team up with the water tribe siblings who won't stop chasing you around the world. seriously, what's their deal? they say they just want to bring him to their father to talk but zuko doesn't trust that for one second.

they fend off the fire nation's assault on the temple, but qin still gets his hands on the prototype war balloon.

toph voice: finally. time to knock some fire nation heads. i'm gonna shove these dunderheads right off the mountain.

the ghost previously hadn't reacted to anything going on around them- but when the fire nation assault starts, they clamp their hands over their ears and curl up in on themselves.

oh, zuko realizes, that's why they're so familiar. this is my past life.

after the fire nation is gone, zuko finds the ghost again. they haven't moved, but when zuko tells them that the fire nation is gone, and the temple is safe, they react to him for the first time. they look up, and ask if he means it.

yeah, zuko says, no one's ever going to hurt you again. i promise. the airbender smiles at him, then slowly disappears. zuko stands in that spot until someone comes to find him. he's not sure that's how the avatar is supposed to interact with their past life.

...he feels a little more centered. weird.

the mechanist builds aang his own glider by way of apology. it won't make up for what he's done, but he hopes they can begin mending things between them with this gift. aang loves it. and the snack compartment is surprisingly useful!

zuko leaves in the middle of the fucking night. gotta ditch the water tribe siblings. sokka can't believe this. he was hoping they'd give them a ride. what do you mean we have to climb back DOWN the mountain?

katara: can't we just use the war minister's lift?

sokka: ...oh yeah.

I do like to focus on beetlejuice's mannerisms while I'm subtitling my bootleg bc he's so expressive, but I also like watching lydia as well.

elizabeth teeter brings something familiar but different to her take on lydia. her lydia is more... angry? rather than sly and venemous like sophia's. she feels a little more like a realistic grieving teen (no hate to sophia, we stan a queen). she also gives me autistic vibes, probably because she reminds me of my sister (who wields mighty autism swag). the way she rambles about things she likes and says things very bluntly. her stance is hunched, with her head kinda jutting forward a little. idk, to me she is a goth autistic queen hehe!

I especially like the scene where she meets the maitlands in the attic. I feel so sad for her when she apologizes for talking about her mom, because you know she's been stopped from doing that many times before. augh the maitlands are so sweet to her honestly 😭

I have been reading your fanfic stories on the Archive of Our Own, and I am loving them, especially your Taang-centered ones.

I would like to ask:

First, will there be stories where Aang and Toph meet their grandchildren (the children of the Dunebabies)?

Second, will there be stories where Aang and Toph celebrate each of the Dunebabies achievements? Examples include Lin becoming Chief of the Police of Republic City. Gyatso becomes an airbending master and takes the reign of the Air Temples. Suyin is establishing Zhaofu. Finally, Kenji succeeds through the path he chooses.

Third, and probably a sad one. Will there be a story of Toph and the Dunebabies in Aang's last moment before he dies, followed up with the funeral service?

Hi Anon, thanks for the ask!

Very glad you like the Taang stories! That lil universe is near and dear to my heart because it's what got me into writing fanfiction. For the past few years, I've focused more of my writing efforts on Toph/Kanto, but I'm always happy to answer Taangy asks!

As far as writing for Taang, I don't want to give any false hope. It's been quite a while since I've touched those wips (or any of my wips, for that matter 0_o). My inspiration and, frankly, my outlines, are old and I don't quite remember the trajectory of certain stories. Even if I started writing for Taang again, it would be a while before I finished them. Also, it's just easier (and more fun, perhaps?) to just talk headcanons with people, so I think if you're itching for Taang content from me, you'll likely find it on Tumblr and not AO3.

I do have a very soft spot in my heart for my Dunebabies, and would be more inclined to write about them and their adventures as opposed to new Taang stories. I might even have an old ficlet or two collecting dust that's about them. When I have the time, I'll try to upload them!

Probably not the answer you're looking or hoping for, and I'm sorry about that! On Tumblr, I'm very much a "never say never" kind of person, but also, I don't wanna string anyone along by promising new stuff :/

Like I said though, if you'd like to chat about Taang, you're always welcome to send more asks! Back in the day, some moots would send asks about my Dunebabies, there should be a big archive already if you're curious and want to read more.
