anyways gustav holst’s jupiter is my favorite in the planets series (shocker. the most well-known one is my favorite) and i’ve heard a couple different ensembles’ renditions of it (at least two.) and i will say that jupiter is a piece that sounds better at a brisker tempo than it does at a reduced tempo (i dont know what tempo the song is originally meant to be played at. one of the versions ive listened to was faster than the other version). in general it feels more triumphant and cheerful and… more like a ‘bringer of jollity’ than if it’s played a bit slower. if played a bit slower then the longer notes and more toned-down segments start to feel like they drag, while if it’s played faster, even the segments with quick note-changes keep from feeling frantic, and the more drawn-out segments still have just the right amount of time they need.
this could be a case where i heard the faster one first and therefore it sounds ‘correct’ compared to the slightly slower version but i still think jupiter sounds better by the ensemble that played it faster
