You and Law didn’t meet in the most conventional way.
—-------
Law stood at the entrance of the bustling campus cafeteria, scanning the area for a place to grab a quick lunch. Amid the crowd, he noticed a girl passionately discussing a book with a group of friends. Her energy and enthusiasm were captivating, and for a moment, Law found himself intrigued.
As he watched, she suddenly stopped mid-sentence and began to sway. Her friends reached out, but before they could react, she collapsed onto a nearby bench, sound asleep. Law's curiosity piqued. He approached her friends, who seemed unfazed by the incident.
"Is she okay?" Law asked, his voice carrying a hint of concern.
One of her friends, a short-ish guy with fluffy black hair, turned to him and smiled. "Yeah, she's fine. She has narcolepsy. It happens sometimes." He tried to swipe her pizza before a tangerine haired girl slapped his hand away.
Law nodded, filing away this new information. He glanced back at the girl, now peacefully napping, and felt a strange pull to learn more about her.
—--------
A few days later, Law found himself in the library, buried in research. He noticed the same girl from the cafeteria asleep at a nearby table, a stack of books around her. He approached quietly, debating whether to wake her.
Just then, her eyes fluttered open. She looked up at him, slightly disoriented, but quickly recovered.
“The fuck-”
"Hi, I'm sorry I startled you."
You reached for your purse as he placed an unopened gatorade on the table and motioned to the chair across from you. Remembering him from your biology class, you nodded and decided to let him sit, hand still on your pink stun gun.
"Law," he introduced himself, taking a seat across from you. "I saw you pass out in the cafeteria the other day."
You chuckled softly. "Yeah, that happens a lot. It's part of having narcolepsy."
Law nodded, his curiosity deepening. "Must be challenging."
"It can be," you admitted. "But you learn to manage. And my friends help out a lot!"
“I hope you don’t mind. I didn’t feel comfortable seeing you alone and asleep.”
'Awe, okay maybe he’s a gentleman.'
You smiled, a mischievous glint in your eye. "Well, at least if I get kidnapped, I'll be well-rested for the ransom negotiations."
Law took a sip of his coffee and immediately choked, nearly spraying it everywhere. He coughed, trying to regain his composure. "Okay, that's... that's one way to look at it," he said, laughing and wiping his mouth. "I guess I'll have to stick around to make sure they demand top dollar for you."
You giggled before hushing yourself when you saw the librarian round the corner. “So sweet to drive up the asking price." You saw a genuine smile flick across Law’s lips and decided to let him stick around.
As they continued to talk, Law found himself drawn to your resilience and positive outlook. You had an infectious zest for life that Law couldn't ignore. So, over the next few weeks, you and Law grew closer.
Turns out you had the same major and classes!
He made it a point to learn more about narcolepsy, wanting to support you as best as he could. You spent time studying together, going to coffee shops, and exploring the campus.
—----------
Park Bench:
One afternoon, Law was walking through the campus park when he noticed a familiar figure sprawled on a bench. He chuckled, recognizing you immediately. You had a book resting on your chest, your peaceful expression illuminated by the dappled sunlight.
"Dreamer," he called softly, sitting beside you. He gently removed the book and adjusted your position to make you more comfortable.
Just then, Luffy and his friends passed by, noticing the scene. Luffy grinned, giving Law a thumbs up. "Taking good care of [Name], Law?"
Law rolled his eyes but couldn't hide his smile. "Yeah, Luffy. Always."
Eating:
During lunch, you and Law sat with a group of his friends. Mid-conversation, you suddenly slumped forward, asleep on the table. Law sighed, used to the sight, and gently lifted your head, placing a folded jacket under it as a makeshift pillow.
Penguin and Shachi, who were sitting across from you, exchanged amused glances. "Hands full?" Penguin questioned with a chuckle.
Law smirked. "You have no idea."
Drive-Through:
One evening, Law decided to take you out for a quick dinner. As he pulled up to the drive-through, he started to place the order when he felt a small weight hit his shoulder. Glancing over, he saw you had fallen asleep, your head resting against him.
He sighed but smiled fondly. "Yeah, can I get two cheeseburgers, one with extra pickles, and a large fries with an apple pie?" he said, already knowing your order by heart.
TA’ing a Classroom:
During one of your lectures, Law received an urgent text from Professor Garp. He hurried to the classroom, finding you asleep at your desk. Your student’s were giggling quietly, but Law's concern was evident.
"Dreamer," he whispered, gently shaking you awake. "Time to go."
You blinked up at him, embarrassed. "Sorry, Law."
"It's okay," he said softly, helping you gather your things. "Let's get you somewhere comfortable."
He picked you up like a small teddy bear and shuffled you out of the door. You gazed up at him, your eyes soft and affectionate. "I must really trust you if I keep falling asleep around you," you said, your voice barely above a whisper before sleep pulled you back under.
Coffee Shop:
You and Law were enjoying a quiet afternoon in your favorite coffee shop. As he was engrossed in a medical journal, he suddenly felt your head against his shoulder. You had fallen asleep, your coffee cup still half-full.
The barista, Sanji, who knew you both well, smiled and whispered to Law, "She’s out again, huh?"
Law nodded, carefully shifting you into his lap. "Yeah, she is."
Later that evening, while watching a movie in Law's apartment, you fell asleep with your head on his shoulder. Law softly adjusted your position, making sure you were comfortable. He watched you sleep, admiring the lovely girl he hadn't expected to drop into his life.
The next day, You woke up in Law's room, covered with a blanket. ‘He must’ve taken the couch.’ You smiled, feeling a warmth in your chest. The first rays of morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow on the room. Law knocked before walking in, holding a cup of coffee. His hair was slightly tousled, and his eyes softened as he saw you awake.
"Morning," he said, handing you a warm mug. The steam rose gently, carrying the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. You sat up fully and pushed yourself against the headboard, your fingers brushing against his as he steadied the mug.
"Thanks," you said, taking a sip. The warmth spread through you, both from the coffee and the gesture. "You didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to," Law said simply, his voice low and sincere. "I care about you."
Your eyes softened as you looked at him, a gentle smile spreading across your face. "I care about you too, Law. Thanks for understanding."
Law smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear.
"Get used to it. I'm not going anywhere."
—-
It had been a few months and you were now dating. One day, during a particularly stressful exam period, you expressed your frustration. "I feel like such a burden sometimes."
Law looked at you, his eyes serious. "You're not a burden, [Name]. You're important to me. Your condition doesn't change that." He abandoned his book and moved closer, cupping your face in his hands. His touch was gentle yet firm, grounding you.
Law's gaze softened as he rested his forehead against yours. "You're strong, and you're doing your best. We'll get through this together," he murmured, his thumbs gently stroking your cheeks. Law leaned in and placed several soft kisses along the apples of your cheeks, each one filled with reassurance and love.
The heat rose up in your chest and flood through you. "Thank you, Law,” you whispered, your voice trembling slightly. Instead of speaking more, you reached up and gently squeezed Law's hands, your eyes meeting his with a look that conveyed everything you couldn't put into words.
You closed your eyes, feeling the tension slowly melt away. In that moment, the stress of exams and the challenges of your condition seemed more manageable with Law by your side. As you both held each other close, the room filled with a comforting silence, punctuated only by the soft sounds of your breathing.
—------------------------ Moving in together!
Dating Law had always been an adventure. From the intense late-night study sessions to the countless study dates where you'd find each other engrossed in medical journals, dedication was something you both admired deeply. But it wasn’t long before you noticed the dark circles under his eyes, the way his movements grew sluggish as the night wore on, and how he often seemed distant, lost in his thoughts.
One particularly late evening, you found him in his apartment, staring at the ceiling, his eyes wide open despite the exhaustion etched into his features. It was then you realized: Law had insomnia. He never mentioned it, brushing off your concerns with a quick smile and a change of subject, but the signs were undeniable.
That little fucker!
"Law," you said softly, sitting beside him on the bed. "How long have you been dealing with this?"
He sighed, turning to face you. "A while," he admitted. "It's just part of who I am."
You frowned, brushing a hand through his hair. "But it doesn't have to be. You help me so I’m gonna help you. We can figure this out together."
It was that moment that solidified your decision to move in together. If you were going to help each other through medical school and residency, you needed to be there for one another, especially during the tough times.
Moving in together was a significant step, but it felt natural. You found comfort in the rhythm of shared routines and small domestic rituals. Mornings began with sleepy kisses and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, while evenings often ended with both of you sprawled on the couch, medical textbooks spread around, discussing cases and treatments.
Helping Law with his insomnia became part of your routine the way he helped you with your narcolepsy was part of his. You started by creating a calming nighttime environment: dim lights, soft music, and sometimes even a warm bath. But it was the nights when you held him close, your fingers running through his hair, whispering soothing words, that made the most difference.
On nights when sleep seemed to be closing in on you, you’d tackle his big goofy ass into the bed and koala him, creating a cocoon of warmth and safety. "Just breathe," you'd murmur, your voice a gentle anchor in the dark. "I've got you."
He’d relax against you, the tension slowly easing from his body as your fingers traced soothing patterns on his scalp. Sometimes, you’d hum softly, a melody you both loved, letting the music lull him into a sense of peace.
There were still nights when he'd find you asleep first, your body sprawled in the most inconvenient places — fully on top of the kitchen table, upside down on the couch, curled up in the tub (scared the literal shit outta him) or even mid-sentence on your shared bed. He'd just chuckle softly, scooping you up and carrying you to bed, placing a soft kiss on your forehead before tucking you in.
Living together was pretty lit. You learned to navigate each other’s quirks and habits, finding joy in the little things. Your bodies weird sleep patterns weren't a burden but more of a shared challenge, one you faced together. And through it all, the love between you grew stronger, built on a foundation of mutual support and understanding.
Despite the long hours and the relentless demands of your budding medical careers, you found peace in each other’s presence. The moments of rest, however fleeting, were treasured. In the quiet hours of the night, with Law’s head resting on your chest, you’d find yourself smiling, knowing that no matter how tough things got, you’d always have each other to come home to.
Your shared friends played a vital role in this journey as well. They rallied around you and Law, each offering their unique brand of support. Luffy, with his infectious energy, would drag Law into spontaneous campus adventures, exhausting him just enough to help him sleep better. There was a time when Luffy insisted on a late-night beach bonfire, where the sound of the waves and the warmth of the fire finally lulled Law into a deep sleep.
Zoro, in his own quiet way, introduced Law to meditation and breathing exercises, often practicing together in the early mornings before the day’s chaos began. Sanji would cook up hearty meals designed to promote sleep (for you energy), slipping herbal teas into your nightly routine.
"Chamomile for the win," he'd say with a wink, handing Law a steaming cup.
Nami and Robin took a more research-based approach, scouring medical journals and holistic remedies to find anything that might help. They'd often have evenings where they'd share their findings, creating a comprehensive plan that combined traditional and alternative methods.
Chopper, being a doctor prodigy himself, was a great ally. He frequently checked on Law’s progress, suggesting adjustments to his routine or medication.
And then there was Usopp and Franky, who used their engineering skills to design a customized, noise-canceling sleep mask and a comfortable, ergonomic bed that helped reduce stress and promote better sleep. Even Brook, with his calming violin melodies, would sometimes play soothing lullabies, his skeletal fingers dancing over the strings.
Law's friends, initially unsure about your condition, quickly adapted. Bepo, a tall dark skinned man with the best hugs anyone could ever give, and one of Law's closest friends, would carry You to a comfortable spot whenever you fell asleep in odd places. Penguin and Shachi would create makeshift beds with their hats whenever they saw you clock out at the study table. Ikkaku didn’t play about your safety either. If you fell asleep at the pub then she was keeping her arm around you at all times until Law could take you home.
Damn you loved everybody!!~
Living together, surrounded by such a supportive group of friends, made the journey easier. The nights were no longer something to dread but moments of bonding and care. You and Law found a balance, each learning to lean on the other, and the support of your shared friends only strengthened your resolve.
—---------
At Home:
Law arrived home first, pacing the living room as he waited for you. Today he wasn’t able to drive you both due to him being on call. Hearing your car pull up, he stepped outside, just in time to see you struggling to stay awake. Opening the car door for you, he teased, "I'm surprised you didn't fall asleep again."
You smiled sheepishly. "I tried my best." You threw him your keys and decided to leave the bags in the car.
He lifted you effortlessly, carrying you inside. "You need to be more careful, sweetheart. I worry about you."
"You always worry," you replied, resting your head against his shoulder.
"And I'll never stop," he said softly, placing a gentle kiss on your forehead.
Inside, Law set you down on the couch, handing you a glass of water. You looked up at him, eyes filled with gratitude and affection. He sat beside you, taking your hand. "I'll always take care of you, Dreamer. Just promise me you'll try to be more careful."
"I promise," you said, squeezing his hand.
—--------
Office Couch:
One late evening, you finished your shift at the hospital and decided to check on Law in his office. Opening the door quietly, you found him slumped over his desk, fast asleep. His dark circles and the clutter of medical journals around him told you he hadn't been sleeping well.
Smiling softly, you walked over and gently shook his shoulder. "Babe, you need to sleep properly."
He groaned, barely awake. "I'm fine, my love."
"No, you're not," you insisted, helping him up. You led him to the couch in his office, coaxing him to lie down. Once he was settled, you snuggled up beside him, your warmth and presence easing him into a deeper sleep.
Living Room:
One night, you woke up to find the bed empty. Knowing Law's struggle with insomnia, you got up and found him on the couch, wide awake and staring at the ceiling.
"Law," you whispered, sitting beside him. "Can't sleep again?"
He sighed, shaking his head. "No."
Without a word, you laid down beside him, making yourself the big spoon. You wrapped your arms around him, pulling him close. "You know, I don't mind being your personal pillow," you murmured, your fingers gently playing with his hair.
He relaxed against you, his tense muscles slowly unwinding. Your soothing voice and gentle touch worked their magic, and before long, he drifted off to sleep in your embrace.
University Library:
During a late-night study session in the library, you found Law fast asleep amidst a pile of books. You knew he had been pushing himself too hard, so you carefully moved the books aside and slid in next to him.
"Couldn't stay awake without me, huh?"
You wrapped an arm around him, nuzzling your head against his shoulder like a cat. The warmth of your body and the steady rhythm of your breathing provided him with a sense of comfort. Even in his sleep, he instinctively pulled you closer, just loving your presence.
Bedroom:
One particularly rough night, you woke to Law pacing the hallway, unable to settle down. You got out of bed and approached him, wrapping your arms around his waist from behind.
"Come back to bed, Baby," you whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to his back.
He sighed, leaning into your touch. "I can't sleep," he found your hands and raised them to his lips to plant kisses on the back of them. You booped his nose before kissing his shoulder blades. “C’mon,”
You pulled backwards to guide him to the bed and fell backwards, making yourself the big spoon. As you held him close, you began to talk softly, recounting your day and telling him stories. Your fingers threaded through his hair, your voice soothing and rhythmic.
Gradually, you felt his breathing even out, his body relaxing completely. You stayed like that, holding him until you were sure he was deeply asleep, knowing that your presence was his anchor.
Kitchen:
Early one morning, you found Law asleep at the kitchen table, his head resting on his folded arms. He had clearly been up all night, working on something.
You sighed softly, shaking your head with a fond smile. "Oh, babe."
Carefully, you lifted him from the chair, supporting his weight as you guided him to the bedroom. Once he was settled in bed, you climbed in beside him, snuggling close.
"I've got you," you whispered, pressing a kiss to his forehead. He mumbled something incoherent, suddenly wrapping an arm around your hips as he drifted deeper into slumber.
You stayed with him, knowing that even in his dreams, he needed the reassurance of your presence.
After graduation—----
Years had passed since your days as a medical student, and now you were a fully-fledged doctor, training young residents alongside Law. The hospital environment was a bustling hub of activity, and your relationship with Law had to be kept under wraps from the higher-ups. Despite the secrecy, your students couldn't help but notice the chemistry between you two.
"I swear, the Trafalgar’s are such an adorable couple," one of your residents whispered to another during a break.
"Totally! He's all grumpy and she's like his sunshine! They're like hospital mom and dad," the other replied with a grin.
Unbeknownst to them, their playful shipping was not far from the truth. Law's stern demeanor contrasted with your warm, approachable nature, creating a dynamic that both baffled and endeared your students. They would often turn to you for guidance, seeing you as a nurturing figure, while Law's gruff exterior masked his deep care for his residents and patients.
(Freaking softy~)
Despite the progress in managing your narcolepsy, there were still moments when it caught up with you. It never happened during lectures or patient interactions, but sometimes during lunch, in your car, or in the privacy of your office, you would fall into a deep sleep, impossible to wake up from.
One afternoon, after a particularly exhausting morning, you found yourself nodding off during lunch. Your residents, familiar with your condition, quickly alerted Law with a series of beeps. He arrived shortly after, a mix of concern and affection in his eyes as he gently lifted you into his arms.
"You've got to be more careful, Dreamer," he whispered, carrying you to his office where you could sleep undisturbed.
He placed you on the couch, covering you with a soft blanket. Your peaceful expression as you slept brought a smile to his face, even as he sighed at the thought of how hard you pushed yourself.
In the Car:
One evening, after a long shift, you decided to take a moment to rest in your car before heading home. Law was finishing up some paperwork when one of your residents knocked on his door, slightly panicked.
"Dr. Trafalgar? Dr. Trafalgar fell asleep in her car. We can't wake her up."
Law's expression softened as he nodded. "I'll take care of it."
He found you in your car, head resting against the window, completely out cold. Carefully, he opened the door and gently lifted you out, carrying you back to his office.
"Dreamer," he murmured, settling you on the couch once more. "You really need to take it easy."
In Your Office:
During a rare moment of downtime, you had decided to catch up on some paperwork in your office. The next thing you knew, you were waking up to the feeling of Law's arms around you, lifting you from your chair.
"Can't resist taking a nap just to be in my arms?" he teased, carefully carrying you to his office.
You mumbled something incoherent, still barely unconscious, but snuggled closer to him. Law chuckled softly, his heart swelling with affection.
—-----
Law glanced at his phone, the familiar chime indicating a new message. It was from one of the medical students.
"Dr. Trafalgar, she fell asleep in the common room again."
He sighed, a mix of exasperation and fondness crossing his features. Quickly gathering his things, he made his way to the common room. As he entered, he saw you slumped over a pile of textbooks, softly snoring. The sight of you asleep, with your hair slightly tousled and your face relaxed, made him smile despite his concern.
"Dreamer," he murmured, gently shaking your shoulder.
You stirred, blinking sleepily up at him. "Law...?"
"Couldn't wait to fall into my arms, huh?" he smirked, squatting down to your height to plant a kiss on your sleepy head.
He gently lifted you into his arms, feeling your head nestled against his shoulder. Your soft breaths tickled his neck, reminding him of how much he adored these moments, even though he wished they didn't happen under such circumstances. As he carried you through the corridors, fellow doctors and nurses exchanged knowing smiles and whispered comments about the devoted couple.
Arriving at his office, Law gently placed you on the couch he had designated for moments like these. He covered you with a warm, soft blanket and brushed a stray hair from your face. You looked so peaceful, so vulnerable, and it tugged at his heartstrings.
"You're lucky I found you," he said, his tone lighter. "Guess who's getting extra assignments as punishment?"
You pouted, still half-asleep. " 'S not fair..."
"Life's not fair," he replied, smirking. "Ah, you're so cute. Don't even remember we're doctors now."
You mumbled something incoherent, your eyes half-closed, but a playful thought crossed your mind. "No, but I know who I married!~"
Law's eyes widened in realization, a grin spreading across his face. "Oh, look who's not really asleep!"
Before you could respond, he unleashed a tickle attack, making you squirm and squeal uncontrollably. The light of his office caught your wedding rings, making them shine brightly. You tried to fend him off, but your laughter and sleepiness weakened your defenses.
"Law! Stop!" you giggled, trying to catch your breath.
With a mischievous glint in your eye, you decided to turn the tables. You reached up and bit his collarbone, catching him off guard, before you began to tickle him back. Law's deep chuckles filled the room as he tried to evade your wiggly fingers, but you were relentless.
"Don’t you dare!" he managed between laughs, his usual stoic expression replaced with one of pure joy.
The two of you ended up rolling around on the couch, tickling and laughing until you were both breathless and tangled in the blanket. You finally stopped, both of you lying there, panting and grinning at each other.
"Okay, okay, truce," Law said, holding up his hands in surrender.
You snuggled closer to him, resting your head on his chest. "Truce," you agreed, your eyes closing as you felt the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
Law wrapped his arms around you, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. "Get some rest, my wife. I've got you."
As you drifted back to sleep, the warmth of the blanket and Law's presence lulling you into a peaceful slumber, Law watched over you, his heart full of love and admiration for his wife.
His wife!
The two of you had made it through college, med school, residency, board exams, your shitty sleep schedules and really made it out the other end.
The sight of you nestled comfortably, your hair fanned out on the pillow, brought a sense of worship over him. He gently adjusted the blanket around you again, ensuring you were snug and warm. As he settled back into his chair to work, the sound of your soft, steady breathing was the sweetest music to his ears. It filled the room with a sense of calm, a gentle reminder of the love and life you shared.
Law often found himself pausing in his work to steal glances at you, his heart pounding against his ribs. Your presence grounded him, reminded him of what truly mattered. The stresses of the day faded into the background, replaced by the serene comfort of your love.
He marveled at your resilience, your unwavering spirit, and the way you faced each day with a smile, despite the challenges your condition brought. And then you had to go in and save him, too. With your warmth, the gentle touches and those little kisses you ghosted over him while he slept. All those nights he couldn’t sleep he was shakey and on the verge of tears and you’d bathe him and calm him down. You let him into your life and he was going to thank you every day for it.
With you, even the mundane felt extraordinary. And as he sat there, watching over you, he couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Blessed for your love, your partnership, and the beautiful journey you were on together. Life, with all its unpredictability and challenges, was perfect because he had you to share it with.
Despite the casual chaos of your busy lives, this moment reminded him of why he cherished you so deeply. Life, with all its demands and pressures, was brighter with you by his side. And as he worked, the sound of your soft, steady breathing was the sweetest music to his ears.
“I love you.”

I'm leaving for college in less than two weeks so here are my headcanons on what colleges the Seven + Nico, Reyna, and Will would probably go to
Annabeth: Boston University (architechture)
Percy: Boston University (committed for swimming; marine bio)
Jason: Northeastern University (communications)
Leo: MIT (mechanical engineering)
Piper: Georgetown University (psychology or law)
Frank: USMA aka West Point (foreign area studies)
Hazel: Columbia University (earth sciences/geology)
Reyna: United States Air Force Academy (pilot/military & strategic studies)
Nico: Cornell (linguistics)

Hex Characters in the Real World
So basically at the end of the game it’s implied that all the characters go into the real world. This also goes hand in hand with the theory that Amanda from Inscryption is Sado meaning that when all the characters go through the hex portal they get a normal looking appearance. I wanted to make headcanons for what jobs I like they would have in the real world just for funsies
If I have the time I wanna draw them just living their casual civilian lives
Reggie:
I think he would just make the Six Pint Inn real. It would be somewhere secluded in the mountains or the woods.
A lot of travelers go there for the owner’s hospitality and really tasty root beer.
He’s known for being kind, even letting people stay at the Inn for free during really bad storms.
Yet some people feel uneasy around him.
Jeremiah:
In the game if you get all the coins for the vending machines it mentions how Jeremiah wasn’t happy being a janitor and that he wanted more of a thrill in his life.
I think initially he helps Reggie build his inn but then leaves to go pursue his own interests but they still chat from time to time.
The job I see for him is a private investigator because he already has experience with hunting people down and keeping a low profile.
Swk:
Either he gets a human form and just becomes a literal weasel.
I think if he did get a human form he would actually go to college and study engineering. He’s probably really good at math.
Ends up joining a rock band as the drummer. It’s mildly popular in his area and he’s kind of a celebrity again but this time he’s really chill about it. He keeps his band mates in line if they start letting the fame get to them.
If he had to make a name up for himself it would be “Kidd Shrewd.” It’s a strange name but perfect for a rockstar.
Chef Bryce:
I think we all know what his ideal job would be.
After everything he’s been through he just wants to live a calm life.
Would try to set up his own bakery but if that doesn’t work out he would become a high school teacher.
He would be the cool teacher that not all the teachers like but his students love him because he’s just really mellow.
Chandrelle:
She would have a job where she didn’t have to interact with many people.
Would be absolutely terrible in a customer service job because of how snarky she is.
This is a weird one but I think she would be a janitor and actually enjoy it because she gets to blast music in her headphones and ignore everything while she cleans.
If she sees someone litter in the place she’s cleaning she will smack them with her mop.
Since her name really sticks out I think she would go under the alias “Charlie Storm” or just “Shannon.”
Lazarus:
When I thought about him the first thing that came to mind was dog walker.
He’s calm and confident which means he’s able to get dogs to listen to him.
The poor man probably doesn’t really know how to relax so on top of dog walking he’s also a cashier at a gas station and going to college full time.
Ends up becoming a veterinarian or a marine biologist.
He prefers to chill with animals rather than humans and finds marine life to be really neat.
Probably doesn’t care about going under a fake name but if he did it would be “Russel” or something basic like “Jason.”
Rust:
Lives off the grid or in a very small town.
He can’t stand crowds and would feel unsafe in a big city.
He’s sad about spending his days alone but he isn’t really sure where to go or what to do with his life.
Ends up working as a mechanic that most people are intimidated by.
Has salvaged a bunch of classic cars and stuff, he likes to decorate them.
Everyone just calls him Rust, they assume it’s just a nickname and don’t really question it.
First Person Perspective:
In the real world he would end up looking like Lionel with very few differences.
Horrified by this he would do everything in his power to make himself look different from his creator. He might dye his hair, let it grow out or shave it completely, wear contacts, anything so people don’t point out the similarities.
Even though he can actually talk now he still doesn’t because he’s used to not talking and he doesn’t want to hear Lionel’s voice come from him.
Someone needs to give him a hug, he needs it.
Probably majors in philosophy and would either work at a library or as an IT.
Probably still wore a hat and trench coat at first but too many people were staring at him so he just wears a hoodie with the hood up all the time.

Ben Gates & The Navy, a Rabbit Hole
For a recent article on injuries I was looking into what exactly Ben’s diving experience and qualifications are (and whether they would have equipped him to jump the ~100 ft off of the Intrepid). Which led me to looking into Ben’s relationship with the U.S. Navy. Which led me to questions.
When the FBI arrives at Ben’s apartment in the first half of National Treasure, Agent Hendrix reads off this list of Ben’s academic background:
degree in American history from Georgetown
degree in mechanical engineering from MIT
Navy ROTC
Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center
It’s the second two items that have me particularly intrigued.
Let's dig in:
Now, the out-of-universe screenwriting explanation seems pretty straightforward: this is a streamlined way to tell the audience that Ben is an experienced scuba diver. From a character perspective, it lets us know he’s been training to be a treasure hunter for a long time, and is perhaps a little bit more badass/physically capable than we've been taking him for.
And more concretely, it sets the stage for two plot points later on: Ben’s trading his diving watch as collateral to the Urban Outfitters cashier, and more significantly, setting up the plausibility the he is prepared to make the jump and torpedo-aided swim from the Intrepid later on in the film.
The Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center is a) a real thing, b) fancy and formal sounding, and c) even includes “salvage” in its name so we require no further context as to what Ben was doing there. And why was he allowed to be at this Navy diving facility? He did ROTC. So from the screenplay’s point of view: exposition dropped, moving on.
But I’m much more interested in what this implies from an in-world perspective, because it leads us to two fascinating questions:
Did Ben Gates serve in the Navy?
When and why did he choose this path?
Did Ben Gates serve in the Navy? My suspicion is that no, he didn’t, and I think that for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Agent Hendrix didn’t mention anything about military service during his background on Ben, and service records would be as easy to come by and important to mention as his education history. Second, I think this would change the way the FBI approached the hunt for Ben. Maybe not hugely, but I think they would see him more as “one of their own” than as some crackpot historian. Or perhaps even a bit more “armed and dangerous” than some overzealous idiot out of his depth.
And thirdly, I think Ben having actual military service on his resume would change the narrative in a way that would become distracting. Again, this is more from a writer/audience perspective, but “Veteran steals Declaration of Independence to prove family theory” plays differently than “Local weirdo steals Declaration of Independence to prove family theory.” It just does. There in an implication of subtext there that, at least in my opinion, would detract from the central plot and theme of the film rather than add to it.
So from in- and out-of-universe, no actual military service for Ben.
Which leads us back to question 2, and opens up a third question as well:
How did he get out of his ROTC obligations?
When did Ben choose NROTC? If you’re unfamiliar, ROTC stands for Reserve Officer Training Corps. It’s a scholarship program that provides full tuition to top U.S. universities so students can “enjoy a traditional college experience while preparing to serve as a Naval Officer.” Basically, on top of your regular university courses you attend naval science classes and other training and participate in summer training cruises. After graduation, Naval ROTC students are commissioned as officers in the Navy or Marine Corps and are required to serve for five years. (ROTC is actually the largest single source of Navy and Marine Corps officers. There are also ROTC programs for the U.S. Army and Air Force.)
There is also a second way you can participate in ROTC called the Navy ROTC College Program. In this program, students pay their own expenses instead of receiving the scholarship. Upon graduation they own 3 years of active duty service, rather than 5.
It is possible to do ROTC as a graduate student, which invites us to ask for which degree Ben participated. I’m assuming, by the way, that Ben accrued these degrees in the order Hendrix reads them, making them a bachelor’s degree in American history and a masters’ degree in mechanical engineering. The fandom wiki disagrees with this, btw. We’ll get there.
I think this order makes sense because I don’t see Ben putting off the history degree. It’s his real passion, and there’s always the risk that he wouldn’t get to go back for a second degree for any number of reasons. There’s also the difference between a bachelor’s and masters’ degree to consider. The higher you get in higher ed, the more specific you get. A bachelor’s in American history would give Ben the greatest breadth of study, and the freedom to explore any and all topics he was interested in. A masters’ degree in the same field would ask him to zero in on a topic, perhaps more than he’d want to. Likewise, I think that depth over breadth would benefit him in his engineering degree. That way he could focus in on the areas most relevant to him and treasure hunting.
MIT and Georgetown both have celebrated NROTC units (Georgetown is part of the George Washington University battalion), but he would have a much better chance of being accepted while pursing a masters’ degree in mechanical engineering rather than a degree in American history, especially if he was taking the scholarship option (per the Navy academic major tiers.)
However, I think it's plausible that he participated during either. (Or even both! It is possible to do ROTC in undergrad and also receive an ROTC scholarship for graduate school as long as you’re only using up 4 years of tuition total. So Ben could have joined ROTC as a junior and then continued on to MIT still in the program. That level of maturity and investment may also have helped his case for getting trained at the NDSTC.)
Let’s talk about the wiki The National Treasure fandom wiki lists Ben’s education as follows:
“a Bachelors degree in archeology and cryptology at the University of Philadelphia, a Masters degree in mechanical engineering degree from MIT and a Doctorate in American History from Georgetown University. While in Georgetown, Ben also enlisted in the US Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps for the next four years and received official certification from their Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center”
That's a whole extra degree! I don’t see a source for this though, so if you know it, please leave a comment or tag!
For the purpose of this analysis I’ll be focusing on the information presented in the first film. However, if this is Ben’s actual academic history, it follows the previous logic while also introducing new factors. At least presently, applicants must not have reached their 27th birthday upon graduation and commissioning. Ben is smart, but I’m not sure he’s “finished a B.A., M.S. and Ph.d. from different schools before age 27” smart. I think it's more interesting if he isn't! He's just a normal-ish guy with an obsession! But feel free to disagree.
The wiki article also says he did ROTC for four years. Most of the ROTC graduate scholarships appear to be for 2 year programs, not 4. And I don’t know how keen the Navy would be on an American history Ph.d, given that their priorities are on STEM.
So I’m inclined to disregard the Ph.d.
How did he get out of his ROTC obligations? No matter when Ben might have participated in ROTC, if we think Ben didn’t serve for five years in the Navy, we have to consider how he got out of his service obligation. Once they’re past what’s called the Obligation Point (the point at which you owe the Navy service in exchange for participation in the program, which is the start of sophomore year if you join as a freshman, and on joining for all other students) students who want out of the program, or who fail to meet the academic requirements, owe the Navy one of two things:
two years of enlisted service (vs commissioned service as an officer, which is what ROTC is signing up for)
full reimbursement of tuition
Again, I don’t think Ben spent any amount of time in the active duty military. That means he would have had to pay back his tuition in full to get out of his service obligations.
But before we go farther into how he got out of it, let’s talk about why he joined in the first place.
Why did Ben choose ROTC in the first place? In order for ROTC to make sense to Ben as a path forward, he has to be reasonably confident of two things:
The ROTC curriculum contains material or access to material he needs and cannot get through other means.
He’ll be able to pay back the tuition. Otherwise he’s taking a huge gamble! 2-5 years away from the hunt?? That’s Ben Gates’ worst nightmare.
I don’t think Ben ever intended to join the Navy, at least not as his primary objective. The man has had one (1) goal since he was 10 years old and that is finding the treasure. A 5-year stint in the Navy would take him much farther from the treasure than he’d be willing to be.
The obvious answer here is that Ben joined ROTC with the specific intent of training at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center. The NDSTC does train several types of Naval officers, although I don’t have concrete evidence that ROTC students would have access. However, if we believe he was never a commissioned officer but did train at the NDSTC, then he must have trained while in ROTC.
The Navy or local police departments can be the best places to train as a salvage diver, but there are other options that don’t risk giving up 5 years of potential treasure hunting in exchange. If order for this to be the best path to the treasure for him, Ben has to either feel that the Navy will give him unparalleled training and/or be the more affordable option. Commercial diving programs can cost up to $20,000 (nowadays anyway), meanwhile with the scholarship option, ROTC is paying for you to learn. Then after he disenrolls, he has ten years to pay back the debt.
So yeah, ROTC probably was the best option for Ben to get trained as a salvage diver (assuming that kind of specialized training was available to him before commissioning.)
But plausibility is actually not my main interest considering Ben’s time with the ROTC.
My main interest is this:
Ben and Patrick Whenever you think Ben spent time in the ROTC—as an undergraduate, grad student, or Ph.d. candidate—that marks the latest possible time for Ben to become estranged from his father. As with so many things in the National Treasure-verse, the secret lies with Charlotte.
When Ben shows up and says he found the Charlotte and Patrick responds,
“The Charlotte. You mean she was a ship?”
Patrick seems genuinely surprised by this revelation, as if he had never even considered that Charlotte might be a ship. And that means he never knew Ben was looking for one. Patrick is a smart guy, so if he knew that Ben was participating in ROTC at all, let alone studying salvage, taking diving lessons, or in any other way involving himself in the world of aquatic treasure hunting, it would have occurred to him that Ben could be looking for a ship.
Obviously the treasure wouldn’t have been something they openly talked about much, since both Patrick and Ben made their opposing views on the hunt very clear from the start, but you’re telling me that Ben pursued ROTC in college and attended the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center and Patrick never once considered that his son was searching for a ship?
Which makes me think he didn’t know about it at all.
The earlier you think Ben joined ROTC, the earlier he and Patrick would have to have essentially stopped speaking in order for Patrick to never even get wind of what Ben was up to.
Oof my heart.
But actually I think Ben’s going off to college (or grad school etc) makes a lot of sense as the boil-over point for the two of them. With each degree, Ben was officially declaring what he wanted to pursue with his life and Patrick wouldn’t have it. (Or Ben wouldn’t have his dad’s not having it. I’m not sure who boiled over first.)
So yeah, there’s your angst for the day.
The Charlotte By the way, I’m ignoring what Riley tells Jess in Edge of History. It’s my general policy that any years-later sequels or franchise additions work on an “a la cart” canonical basis. If I like something, it’s mine; if I don’t, it doesn’t count.
All evidence we have suggests that Ben used his ROTC status to get certified at the NDSTC with the specific intent of being able to find and salvage the Charlotte. No other piece of the treasure legend points to an aquatic clue, so the latest you think Ben trained at the NDSTC is the latest he could have realized Charlotte was a ship. And he would have done massive amounts of research before committing to the theory. He would be checking old port records, shipping manifests, sailors’ journals, and shipbuilding companies to see if a ship named the Charlotte even existed in the time frame necessary to be a plausible answer to the clue. Only once he’d confirmed that the Charlotte existed and had been lost at sea would he know he needed salvage diver training.
And if he could only train at the NDSTC while he was an ROTC student, that would have been way before he met Riley. When they find the Charlotte, Ben says to Ian that,
“Two years ago, if you hadn’t believed the treasure was real, I don’t know if I ever would have found Charlotte.”
Ben was not in the ROTC two years ago, because based on his driver’s license he’s 39 at the time of the first move, way past the ROTC age restrictions. Furthermore, what is Ian investing in if Ben doesn’t have a concrete theory by this point? “I think there’s this treasure out there somewhere and you should pay for me to look,” is a much less convincing investment pitch than “I’m looking for this ship and my theory is that it’s in this place.”
And yes it definitely would have taken Ben the full two years to find the ship, even with Ian’s financial support. And probably much longer than that. The Whydah Gally, the only authenticated Golden Age pirate shipwreck, was only discovered 260 years after it sank under just 14 ft of water and 5 ft of sand even though there were eyewitness accounts of where it sunk just 500 ft off shore. Shipwrecks are hard to find. That’s why I also don’t think he hooked Ian with a different theory and then pivoted to the ship-Charlotte idea later. I think those two years were all shipwreck all the time.
Also, Riley didn’t join the team until after Ian got involved. Ben says,
“Riley, you’re not missing the little windowless cubicle we found you in, are you?” (emphasis mine).
So Ian was involved in finding Riley. And while Ben is pretty buddy-buddy with Ian in that first scene in the snowcat, Riley is much more guarded. I don't think it's just that he doesn’t like being ragged on; I think he was the last one to join the expedition and isn’t quite 100% sure about these people.
So while it made for a cute callback in the show…I’m not buying it, at least not for the purpose of this analysis.
How did Ben pay back the Navy? That leaves us with our final question: How did Ben pay back his tuition and thereby excuse himself from the ROTC service obligation? The boring answer is that he paid the debt back over the 10 year installment period, probably sometimes scraping by with the minimum payments of $50.00 per month. While the Gates’s aren’t poor, the movie makes it clear that treasure hunting doesn’t pay (until it does), and nobody in the family has accumulated much wealth in the course of its pursuit.
“You know what that dollar represents? The entire Gates’ family fortune.”
The more interesting answer is: he found a treasure. Not the treasure, obviously, but a treasure. Maybe he salvaged a different shipwreck, or discovered a reasonably valuable object on land. We know that in the course of his quest he found a George Washington 1789 Inaugural campaign button. He’s almost certainly found other objects of value as well.
So, for the purposes of drama, let’s say he’s left ROTC and is pursuing his next degree and/or searching for the treasure, but this debt is eating him alive. He owes too much not not be working full time, and that's slowly whittling away at the number of hours he’s able to spend treasure hunting, until it’s virtually none at all. He can’t ask his father for money (and while he probably could ask his mother, we’re sticking to the information given in the first movie, which implies she's dead). Then, shortly before he’s really in trouble—give-up-the-hunt kind of trouble— he finds it. Treasure.
Maybe he scrapes together his last few hundred bucks to go on one last dive off the Florida coast and finds a long-sought Spanish Galleon or a Gilded Age cargo steamer that sunk in a hurricane. Maybe he’s exploring the basement of a big old house in Maryland and, in a crack between the bricks and the molding, finds a soldier’s discharge form signed by George Washington himself.
So Ben pays back his scholarship and is free to treasure hunt full time, or at least as full-time as he can manage before Ian comes along to foot the bill.
Conclusion My conclusion here is that I hadn’t spent a lot of time thinking about Ben's time in the ROTC, or what his and Patrick’s relationship was like between Ben hearing the legend as a kid and showing up on his dad’s doorstep with the Declaration of Independence thirty years later. I hadn’t imagined just how messy it might have gotten, or how little they’d been involved in each other’s lives, but based on the timeline that ROTC constructs, even Ben’s latest entry point means they haven’t been speaking for ten years. And, as I think the screenplay hoped all along, thinking through Ben’s education impressed upon me just how intensely he was willing to train to put himself in the best possible position for find the Charlotte, and how long he had to have been searching for the ship.
My other conclusion is that I have no first-hand knowledge of ROTC or any other topic here so if you do and you’ve got a different theory, I’d love to hear it!
Thank you for joining me down this rabbit hole.

Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human? Pointless, really.

BACKGROUND;
TW: n/a. ● Nixie's parents met unexpectedly on a ship that her mother was traveling on and her father was working on. It was love at first sight and within four months they were married and Nixie's birth followed an additional seven months later. ● Due to her parents work, they never truly had a set home. Instead, she spent her childhood traveling on ships or boats and visiting exotic and beautiful locations, staying in everything from hostels to hotels and rented out rooms. ● Their education came mostly in the form of homeschooling and lessons taught both by their mother and the various women who helped raise and shape them throughout their childhood, most of their knowledge (and the things that piqued their interest) not coming from the things found in a textbook or classroom. ● It was throughout their travels that they became increasingly aware of the impact of global warming, particularly on the places that they loved to much, and in hopes to make a more impactful change going forward, they enrolled in Ogden. ● They definitely do care about their education and being able to help, but being as wild as they are, Nixie struggles with actually attending classes and staying on top of their assignments, something she too often has to be reminded about.
BIOGRAPHY;
TW: n/a. It had to have been fate that allowed their paths to cross, no coincidence that the ship she wasn’t have meant to have been on broke down while in his zone, that she’d wandered out of her room and into directly into him. It was love at first sight, two people destined for each other, a romance that others might try to simplify but the Linghui’s refuse to view it so plainly. It took a mere four months before they were tying the knot, a wedding some called shotgun soon after the fact, but the child growing inside of Carley was unbeknownst to them at the time, a welcome surprise when that beautiful baby arrived seven months later. To say that Nixie's upbringing was unorthodox would still be managing to down play it. She may have been born in Funafuti but it was never home, pulled to the seas before she was even a year old. In fact, home wasn't a word that they identified in the traditional sense — home was people, it was a feeling, no set place that ever been able to hold them. Nixie spent their time drifting; beaches and islands, boats and ships, oceans and villages that so few people got to experience. There was a plethora of time spent under the watchful eye of local women, incredible elders from varying backgrounds who’d lived and seen so much more than her, who shared their wisdom and stories and helped shape her. Of course, home schooling was mandatory, even with no singular home it was important she learn — and although they passed, it was no easy task, mind drifting and focus elsewhere, always feeling they could experience and learn more from the world around them than any book. While the past two decades have allowed them to experience beautiful and exotic places, they've also forced them to be witness to the suffering of the world — particularly of small islands, populations that have lived there for centuries and are often putting the least strain on the environment, remaining most affected by it. It’s why she’s journeyed to Ogden, the stillest she’s ever been and for the longest extent of time, leaving her skin itching for change. Nixie wants to learn and help the places and people that have come to be so important to her, but don’t be surprised if you find her arriving to class late or not at all, wandering the hiking trails while the skies are dark or laying on the water for so long people begin to worry she’s merely a body.
EXPAND ON HOW THEY EMBODY THEIR SKELETON TROPE;
For perhaps anyone who's appreciated an iteration of Hamlet, the visual is clear — long, disheveled hair and bare feet, clad in a dress and often pictured amidst flowers and water. It's not just the visual of her that takes people's mind to that place, however. They display the same childlike naivety, as if entirely unaware of the harsh realities of the word, a mind that it seems has taken a step away from the real world while at the same instant, holds gently onto secrets that no one else may ever may be privy to the knowledge of. At times it's unclear if Nixie is plagued by an invisible illness or merely not of this world, questions that her unwillingness to answer acts to make her all the more bewitching.
RELATIONSHIP TO GREER;
Their first encounter was unexpected and the ones that followed were even more so. Nixie was an almost impossible person to pin down, floating around with her parents like a piece of drift wood lost to the sea. It was thanks to the beautiful locations that their work took them that she was privy to many experiences most her age were not so lucky to enjoy. The couple may not have been able to afford the luxury of the vacation homes and resorts that the Morrison family could, but the ocean and it's mainland were things trickier to lay claim upon. The same beach at the same time, together and yet somehow worlds apart — though to an outside eye, it seemed the pair were either unaware or unaffected by that reality.

How does climate change impact coral reefs and their ecosystems
Climate change has emerged as a grave and imminent threat to coral reefs and their fragile ecosystems. The devastating impacts of rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, sea level rise, extreme weather events, and altered ocean circulation have collectively taken a toll on these vital marine habitats. Coral bleaching, in particular, has become a distressing consequence, leading to the widespread loss of vibrant and bio diverse coral colonies.
Climate change has significant and detrimental effects on coral reefs and their ecosystems. The main impacts are as follows:
Coral Bleaching: Rising sea temperatures lead to coral bleaching, a stress response where corals expel their symbiotic algae, turning them white. Without these algae, corals lose their main source of nutrition and become more susceptible to disease and mortality.
Ocean Acidification: Increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere result in higher CO2 concentrations in seawater. This leads to ocean acidification, which hampers coral growth and the ability of some marine organisms to form their calcium carbonate shells and skeletons.
Sea Level Rise: Global warming causes the melting of polar ice and glaciers, leading to rising sea levels. Higher sea levels can cause more frequent and severe coastal flooding, negatively impacting coral reef habitats and nearby coastal communities.
Extreme Weather Events: Climate change contributes to the intensification of tropical storms and cyclones. These events can physically damage coral reefs through wave action and sediment erosion.
Altered Ocean Circulation: Changes in ocean currents and temperature patterns can disrupt the natural distribution of nutrients, affecting the food availability for coral reef organisms.
Species Disruptions: Some species may shift their distribution or migrate to other areas due to changing environmental conditions, potentially disrupting the delicate balance of coral reef ecosystems.
Loss of Biodiversity: Coral reefs support a vast array of marine life. Climate change-induced impacts, such as coral bleaching and habitat degradation, lead to the loss of biodiversity within these ecosystems.
Loss of Coastal Protection: Healthy coral reefs act as natural barriers, protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges. As reefs degrade, coastal communities become more vulnerable to the impacts of climate-related events.
The combined effects of these climate change impacts pose a serious threat to the health and survival of coral reefs and the countless marine species that depend on them for food, shelter, and protection. Urgent and concerted efforts to mitigate climate change and promote coral reef conservation are essential to safeguard these valuable ecosystems for future generations.
In conclusion, the perilous consequences of climate change on coral reefs and their ecosystems are undeniable. Urgent action is imperative to curb greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to prevent further deterioration of these invaluable marine habitats. Conservation efforts must be intensified to promote the recovery and restoration of coral reefs, alongside a broader commitment to sustainable practices and resilient coastal management.
Nations and communities must collaborate on a global scale to protect and preserve coral reefs and the biodiversity they harbor. By fostering environmental consciousness, implementing adaptive strategies, and supporting scientific research, we can strive towards safeguarding these natural wonders for generations to come. The collective responsibility to combat climate change and preserve coral reefs stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving the remarkable beauty and ecological integrity of our planet’s oceans.

Feedist Kinktober - Day 25
(Prompts: Olympian 🏛️ / Kaiju Attack! 🐙)
[Content notes: fat FtM main character; fat cis woman main character; brother/sister dynamics; body issues; weight talk; mild/mutual fat shaming; brief mention of past bullying]
Empira & Dionysus
"You asshole! For the last time, I'm Hercules, not whatever you said." Flynn glared at his sister. How dare she? He'd spent at least fifty dollars on this toga. It'd been hard enough for him to find one in his size, let alone one that was styled in a way that said "Greek god" and not "fat guy in an 80s college movie."
It was the belt, Flynn thought, that tipped it over the edge toward the former. It was a fabulous belt. Brown with a gold buckle, like a proper mythological figure.
And he liked the way the toga draped majestically over him, showed off a bit of his hairy chest, top surgery scar a bit visible---something that would've made him mortified not that long ago, but more and more he was coming around to letting himself be visible like that.
"Dionysus."
"Right. Don't know who that is, but I'm assuming it's a fat joke."
Heather snorts while typing something on her phone. "Dumbass. How could you know who Hercules is and not Dionysius?"
Flynn threw part of his toga into the air, like a cape, in an offended huff. "Sorry, I guess we didn't cover the classics in Engineering school. We mostly covered how not to be unemployed."
"Excuse you, asshole! I am not unemployed! I'm a therapist."
Flynn sniffed. "Oh yes. That is certainly a job. That exists. Anyways, were you still wanting me to give you a ride to the costume party or will you just marinate yourself in the satisfaction of hurting my feelings while I leave you here?"
"No, goddammit, you know I don't have a car," Heather whined.
"You could walk."
"Fuck that," Heather retorted. "And I'm not walking all that way in my costume I'll die."
Flynn stared at his sister. She was sitting in his recliner, her wide hips taking up the whole thing, in a fuzzy pink hoodie and deep blue leggings with stars on them.
"Is your costume 'fat girl on her phone'?"
"Oh, so you can make fat jokes, but I can't? I feel this is sexism or whatever. And anyway smartass, my costume is out in your hallway. I just haven't had a chance to put it on yet because of your miscellaneous bullshit."
"Well, perhaps now is a good time, your majesty?"
Heather grumped, and reached out her hands. "Fine. But you gotta help me up from this chair. I swear to god it's trying to eat me."
Flynn laughed, and pulled his sister to her feet with a grunt. "There you go," he said sweetly, slightly enjoying his sister's frustration as she ambled off into the other room.
*****
Heather returned almost an hour later, in an olive-green tank dress, giant wings with a kaleidescope-esque pattern on them, her eyes coloured by heavy green eyeshadow and glitter, ruffled-looking brown gloves, and her usual black combat boots.
"And what were you supposed to be again? Dion-whatever-the-fuck?" he asked, trying to throw back the snark she'd tossed at him when he came out in the toga, but his heart wasn't really in it.
"It's Dionysus, you loser."
He knew the costume was supposed to be Empira, this butterfly kaiju Heather made up when they were kids. Flynn had gotten bullied by some kid and Heather had swooped in and to the kid's answer of "Who the fuck are you?" said "I'm Empira and I'm here to kill your ass, bitch" to which the kid ran away screaming.
Heather actually got suspended for that, but luckily their mom was a teacher and was able to get the whole thing figured out by the end of that week.
Flynn was still sometimes in awe of his sister. But it wasn't like he hadn't seen her at her worst, or was unaware of her flaws. He'd seen her genuinely anxious; he'd seen her cry; but still, he couldn't shake that feeling that she was somehow invincible. Standing there in her costume with the ornate wings, all five-foot-ten and three-hundred-something pounds of her, not giving a single solitary fuck and ready to take up all the space at the party the two of them were about to attend.
Flynn smiled, unable to keep up the act.
"Why are you smiling like that, weirdo?"
"Do you remember when you threatened that guy? Like when I was in first grade?" Flynn asked suddenly.
Heather laughed. "You mean that little shit Jordan? Fuck yes. Did you see he sells real estate now? In, like, Florida."
"Fucking Jordan," Flynn shook his head.
"Fuc-king Jordan," Heather nodded back.
Their eyes met for a second, and if they had've been very different people he might've given her a hug, thanked her for standing up for him, and for always making sure he was included, even if sometimes he didn't deserve it.
But that was just who they were.
"Anyways, you're gonna have to get that fat ass in gear or we're gonna be even more late!" Flynn jingled the keys to his truck, before jogging off in the direction of his garage.
"Fuck you," Heather called out as she followed behind, laughing.
