A complete theory on the history and intentions of the lake entity in It Lives Beneath
(This information has been updated as of Chapter 10. The first part of this theory involves the history of The Power and the Cult in Westchester)
Tumblr media
TL;DR: The ghost in the lake is MC’s grandmother
Beginnings of Pine Springs
In the year 1970, the AMC Gremlin car was produced and popularized. This was the vehicle which the journal author drove upon moving to a cabin in the woods near the river, which we can safely assume to be located in present-day Pine Springs. At that time, The Power was a “curious and playful” entity that encompassed the woods and waters in the neighboring towns of Westchester and Pine Springs. Within months after arrival, the journal author unintentionally established a connection with The Power, was compelled towards the house ruins in Westchester, saw Redfield, and met Cora.
Also in 1970, exactly fifty years prior to the Lake Day celebration in ILB, the town of Pine Springs was founded. According to Astrid, The Society– which is a cult that claims to be protectors of The Power in Pine Springs– was formed shortly after. Meanwhile, a development company attempted to buy the land which the journal author occupied. The author refused, and made a decision to protect The Power absolutely.
Eventually, the development company succeeded. Pine Springs became urbanized. A dam was built for water storage, irrigation, power generation, flood control, and other industrial uses. The flow of the river near the journal author’s home was restricted to create the dam– also known as a reservoir or an artificial lake. Later on, the water level in the lake was drained to make way for more mansions in the Lakefront Neighborhood.
Negative environmental impacts of dams
Now to make it clear, dams are highly beneficial to human civilizations. Dams do not pollute the water or air, and they are efficient substitutes to the more destructive fossil fuel consumption. However, constructing dams can also harm nature in numerous ways.
Dams take up a huge area of land for them to work. Entire forests need to be cut down.
The rivers which provide the water source for the dams need to have their flows obstructed, or reversed on opposite ends of the dam. Hydroelectric power plants also change the temperature of the water. These changes may disrupt the balance of ecological systems in the river and the surrounding land.
Migratory fish species are affected. In the Columbia River along the border of Oregon, salmon must swim upstream to their spawning grounds to reproduce but the series of dams gets in their way. Fish and other organisms can also be injured or killed by the turbine blades.
Due to sedimentation, reservoirs will have higher amounts of nutrients which cultivate an excess of algae and other weeds. These weeds consume large amounts of oxygen as they decompose, creating oxygen-starved dead zones incapable of supporting river life of any kind.
If too much water is stored in dams, downstream rivers can dry up.
Methane and carbon dioxide, strong greenhouse gasses, may also form in some reservoirs and be emitted to the atmosphere.
The town founders and the first members of The Society
At this point, it is clear why The Power would have been against the dam’s construction. However, Astrid, who is the current leader of The Society that claims to be protectors of The Power, is also a real estate company owner. Her husband Vincent, another cultist, is a corporate lawyer– a profession that protects capitalism and industrialization. In Chapter 10, Chief Kelley, also a cultist, confirmed that the town founders were the ones who dammed the river and cut down the forests. He also mentions that they would have been proud of him now for his services to the town.
Therefore, it is my theory that the cultists today are heirs of the town founders, who were also the first members of The Society. Those same people exploited The Power against its own interest of preserving nature. They harnessed power to gain wealth and influence, and to put themselves on top of the economic pyramid.
Tumblr media
What happened to the first cultists?
Chief Kelley angrily asserted that the founders had to make a huge sacrifice for the town. What could have been this sacrifice?
In ILITW, the MC discovers that there were “two mass murders in Westchester, in the same woods, within 100 years of one another.” The first one happened on October 31, 1871. The fourteen members of The Arcane Society of Westchester communed to perform a ritual but Redfield attempted to hog The Power for himself, got consumed, and was turned into the monster in the woods. The second instance happened on August 22, 1976.
Tumblr media
It is highly probable that the victims of that incident were the cultists/ town founders. As of writing, we have no way of confirming if it was indeed a massacre or a mass suicide– if they were murdered by The Power or if they sacrificed themselves. However, we do know two other instances of group deaths. One was in 1871 when Redfield became the monster. The ritual went wrong when Redfield hogged The Power. The cultists were massacred, then Cora and the few other survivors worked to bind Redfield later on. The second was in September of 2017 if you did not gain enough nerve points for your friends in ILITW. In that instance, Jane murdered the “cult members” in order to free herself. Both of those massacres resulted in someone becoming a new monster who is fused with The Power.
I theorize that the author of the journal, after getting the idea from Cora’s story about Redfield, desperately resorted to joining The Society. She also attempted to hog The Power for herself so she can stop her fellow cultists from using it for the wrong reasons. In the process, she became the ghost entity in the lake. But who is she?
The identity of the ghost in the lake
At first, we are led to believe that the journal author is male, because he was able to fix the house all by himself. Some popular theories claim that Grandpa Arthur is the journal author after all and the house he lives in is the same cabin in the woods. But if this is the case, then why would the journal entries present themselves to MC in the form of ghostly bottles? If Grandpa intended for MC to know about his history, he could have just told MC directly. Furthermore, Grandpa mentioned that he has been paying mortgage in the last 30 years, but the journal author owned the cabin and had no landlord.
Another hint that the journal author could have been female is when she wrote: “That development group has found a cunning new tactic: they sent a handsome man in a little bowtie to knock on my door. He had a nice smile and he was quick with the witty chit-chat.” (Of course, this could also be an evidence to the author being a male homosexual, but how could the development company have known that?)
If you pay close attention, you will notice that there are many significant parallels in the plot and timeframe of the events in ILITW and the ones in ILB. Because of this pattern, it would make sense that the journal author ended up becoming the female lake entity, just as Redfield– the letter writer– ended up becoming the monster in the woods.
Finally, the most compelling evidence I have that the journal author is the same person as the female lake entity is this: Noah/ILITW MC (the monster) knew that the way to communicate with the lake entity is written in a book found in Cora’s house. Since Cora is also a cultist who met the journal author, she would have known how to talk her.
Having established that, I will now leap into my theory that the lake entity is MC’s grandmother. (By the way, the ghost can’t possibly be MC’s mom because she died only 2 weeks before MC came to Pine Springs and her body can’t possibly be reduced to bones already. Plus MC and Elliot obviously would have buried their parents.)
The following are the evidences for my claim:
The lake entity had been drowning people in the lake for 20 years [acc. to Ned], and yet in Chapter 9, she somehow recognized MC who has only been in Pine Springs for a week. The only possible explanation for this recognition is if they share the same blood, or if the ghost can see a resemblance of her own daughter (MC’s mom) in MC.
It is the only plausible explanation of why Grandpa would choose to be associated to the cult. Perhaps he is looking for a way to free his wife or avenge her by infiltrating the cult. Note that he is the only one among them who is poor. As to his speech that he wanted to harness The Power to live longer, it seems hard to believe that an old man who has no family or riches would want to live longer in this world.
It has been repeatedly emphasized that the lake entity is angry about something that had hurt her. The ghost of the grandmother behaves similarly to MC and Elliot in this way:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MC is at least 18 years old because he/she is of legal age and is in college. When MC was seven years old, his/her biological father left his/her mom who ended up with Todd and gave birth to Elliot. Therefore, MC is at least seven years older than Elliot and Elliot is a pubescent teenager who is likely between ages 13-16. This puts MC’s age closer to 20 years or above. Now remember MC mentioned that they never met Grandpa Arthur. This means that their mom left Pine Springs at least 20 years ago. Perhaps she left Pine Springs to protect her unborn baby from the danger of knowing about the cult.
Now, I have no evidence for this, but I also think that a cult member needs an heir to pass his/her rank onto (or maybe to sacrifice later on). Astrid and Vincent Wescott have Imogen. Richard Sutcliffe has Robbie. Grandpa had MC’s mom. Perhaps Chief Kelley adopted Parker so he can be his heir. If this is true, it can explain why MC’s mom left Pine Springs: because she did not want her child to eventually be associated with the cult.
So why did the cult kill MC’s mother? Why did they save MC and Elliot from the lake entity? If the lake entity is their grandmother, why did she attempt to drown MC and Elliot?
Why the lake entity is drowning people
The ghost in the lake has been drowning people by luring them towards the water. According to Ned, his wife was the third victim that year, Kyle was the second this month, and it has been happening more frequently of late.
Tumblr media
“The Power’s true strength comes from its connection with its followers. [Cora]” The more cult members there are and the more frequently they interact with The Power, the stronger both parties get. By trapping Dan in the clearing, Jane lured the ILITW gang into the woods so she can establish a connection with them and become stronger. When Goddard asked a member of The Arcane Society of Westchester if he could join them, the member was delighted and immediately agreed. Similarly, the cult in Pine Springs has been benefiting from recruiting more members, which is exactly how a pyramid scheme works.
In ILITW, a doctor took note of the pattern of an epidemic in Westchester which is characterized by an influx of coma patients, closely followed by the death of one or more people, and then a period of quiet. Cora revealed that when The Power grows too strong just as Jane did, it tends to feed on the life force of human beings who could fall into a coma or eventually die.
Perhaps The Power needs to feed on more people just as the The Society recruits more members. However, It does not make sense why the cult would want to put the ghost to rest because then, it would sever their connection and consequentially, their powers too.
Tumblr media
What the ghost in the lake wants
It could be merely coincidental, but the drownings began 20 years ago, at the same time that MC’s mom left Pine Springs. This is a bold leap of intuition, but I think that the key to putting the soul of the grandmother to rest lies in her own blood or DNA. (Grandpa Arthur said this kind of power requires blood and sacrifice, and Imogen had to offer a drop of blood during the initiation.)
The only three people with whom the lake entity shares her blood are MC, Elliot, and their mother. When Vincent drove MC and Elliot home, he made sure to check if they have any other relatives, and MC confirmed that they do not.
Perhaps the cultists who betrayed the rest of The Society killed MC’s mom so that her blood could no longer be used to put the ghost to rest.
I do not have an explanation as to why Astrid saved MC and Elliot from the ghost and what the cult intends to do with them, but it is worth noting that the ghost tried to get her hands on MC five separate times, and on Elliot two separate times. Perhaps she recognizes them as her kin and perhaps she understands that their blood is the key to freeing her soul. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that she hasn’t killed Elliot yet.
Finally, we know that the lake entity and the cultists hate each other because of the massacre that happened in 1976, and when she repeatedly says “Kill them all”, she could be telling MC to kill all the cultists.
Tumblr media
As the story progresses, we will see which cultists have good and bad intentions.
(Further theory: Proof that Vincent and Kelley are lying)

In Closing
A)
TST has attempted to prolong the suit at our (and possibly their donors’) expense, not by outlining any real harm or damages done, but by spackling over those holes with allegations about as rigorously supported as Fox News conspiracy theories.
Here’s my favorite example:
So it shouldn’t be a controversial statement, but Facebook owns Facebook pages, and they have a much better ability to detect “hacking” or “cyberpiracy” if it had actually occurred.
We argued that in court, and both FB and the judge agreed with us.
(From TST’s complaint and the judge’s dismissal, respectively)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As explained above, the statute defines the term “domain name,” and the case law provides further clarification. The Satanic Temple’s claim fails under both. In reverse order, cases in this circuit explain that there are two parts to a domain name, a top-level and a second-level. Post-domain paths are not included in that combination"
But TST spent however much money paying a lawyer to argue that they somehow know better, that TST owns whichever Facebook page it puts its name on, and that this issue can’t be resolved just by submitting a ticket to FB corporate (which they ultimately did anyway).
Similarly, using that FB page to draw attention to preexisting press releases, local journalism, and the lived experiences of ex-members around the country is not suddenly “defamation,” as TST also tried and failed to argue; more on that later.
In the initial complaint, TST repeatedly alleges—with no evidence, just assertion—that we colluded to build up a “competitor organization”
In itself, the concept of a religion reacting to a schism by spending 000s in federal court is absurd. Not even Baptists would stoop so low.
Now, this is bullshit spun out of whole cloth; they include no evidence besides the accusation itself
b/c there is none
Moreover, there are probably dozens of Satanist groups around the US. AFAIK none of them have ever been sued for being founded or sustained by ex-TST members
Anyway, I’d been scratching my head for a year trying to figure out how they thought they could substantiate the allegation of a “rival organization” in a legal document. I finally found out this last March.
As part of their amended complaint, one of their exhibits is my own FB post trying to process my removal as I understood it
b/c from my end, I had just had my religious community of 6 years ripped away without warning, notice, or any real chance to speak on my behalf within it
And I can’t overstate how darkly amusing it is to see a “religious organization” voluntarily include a post where I accuse it of repeatedly mishandling sexual abuse reports at the local level, reports that I only discovered in the aftermath, by other ex-members coming forward…
Tumblr media
I've been fielding messages from the general membership for the last day or so, asking what the fuck is going on. ...There are multiple people who have since come forward, telling me about reports they've made of sexual harassment within TST-WA. They didn't report them to me, a glorified middle-manager, and that is absolutely both their right and the right decision. They entrusted it directly to the top leadership, leadership who is empowered by our national coordinators to act quickly and unilaterally in a crisis...who sat by as the perpetrators continued to attend meetings in, as far as the rest of us knew, good standing. ... These people WERE members in good standing – up until the point they realized their reports would never be taken seriously, at which point they became former members to whom TST-WA defaults to owing nothing: not the empathy in the First Tenet, not the struggle for justice of the Second, nor the nobility of action and thought of the Seventh.
Just so TST can focus on this exchange to support their allegation of a rival organization - again, in an actual federal court document:
Tumblr media
TST talks a lot about how it values beliefs being informed by available evidence, but that comment is the SOLE basis for the idea that “TST 2: Electric Boogaloo” actually exists and harms them:
a throwaway comment by someone 1400 miles away and who isn’t even a defendant.
Tumblr media
87. Defendants were aware that the social media accounts had an economic value to TST. The social media accounts were the primary means for TST to communicate with the general public and TST’s supporters and Defendants personally used those social media accounts for the purpose of assisting TST in creating the kind of communications that help to foster the kind of relationship which results in charitable donations to support TST’s organizational purposes. By depriving TST of its social media accounts, Defendants intended to diminish those donations and divert donations to their competitor organization, provisionally named “The Satanic Temple 2: Electric Boogaloo.” Exhibit 5 at p. 4.
If anything makes it clear that this is a SLAPP suit where merits don’t matter, it should be a religion claiming to be threatened by a nigh-40-year-old movie reference.
They put this on the federal record, right next to their tenets about how great they think reason and evidence are.
Tumblr media
111. Defendants’ competitor organization, which was provisionally entitled “The Satanic Temple 2: Electric Boogaloo” and “Satanic Washington – Archived Temple Chapter” had a likelihood of impairing the distinctiveness of TST as a famous mark. To-wit:
(1) “The Satanic Temple 2: Electric Boogaloo” directly copies “The Satanic Temple;” and “Satanic Washington – Archived Temple Chapter” (emphasis added) directly suggests that the Washington Chapter has been replaced by Defendants’ competitor organization.
(2) TST has an inherently distinctive mark because there is only one “The Satanic Temple,” Plaintiff, which has acquired distinctiveness as a mark through years of effort.
(3) There is only one “The Satanic Temple” because TST jealously guards its intellectual property rights
BTW, keep that last clause in mind — their claim that there is “only one The Satanic Temple” — b/c it’s not really true. And I’m going to come back to why towards the end.
United Federation of Churches LLC v. Johnson et al
The Satanic Temple, an allegedly progressive religion that claims to fight religious overreach, is secretly spending tens of thousands in litigation to target former members after TST's owners were criticized on FB for a pattern of failing to live up to their own professed tenets
It’s not clear how much money TST has spent on the suit so far, where that money has come from, or what membership—if any—was consulted in deciding to devote so many resources to this SLAPP action, but it's lasted more than a year, including re-filing after a judge's dismissal
Tomorrow (June 8), the defendants will submit another, hopefully final, motion to dismiss the case for good.
I’m one of those defendants. Let’s talk about it. This is an extremely long thread, but I have receipts for everything.
Now, the suit is still going, so I can’t go into *everything* wrong with the complaint.
But I CAN point out it exists, that TST has deliberately kept it going despite the judge dismissing the original complaints back in Feb, and repeat/quote what the court documents say so far.
Mostly I want to focus on the most egregious aspects of this suit, but in case you feel like following along in greater detail, one of the other defendants has uploaded the court documents here to get around paywalls
Public record is fair game too. That’s important b/c TST’s betrayal of its own values (via this suit’s existence) makes more sense given how they’re legally structured and how they work to obfuscate this.
This suit is a window, legally, into what they really are.
Other members & even whole chapters have left, both before and after us, taking all their social media pages with them. None were ever sued on strained accusations of “hacking.”
But we were, and TST threw in a bundle of even flimsier complaints just to draw it out longer.
We can’t read minds, but we think why this may be is based on the fact that we didn’t just leave quietly, but also talked publicly about some of the other corporations TST’s owners have, and what names are on official documents for them, according to the already-public record.
We’ll come back to this - for now, just keep in mind that TST’s two founders have apparently been willing to sign both their legal names AND their pseudonyms on the same legal document, while also using the same name for a for-profit corp as they do their nonprofit “church”
The fact that we can publicly quote court documents is especially cool b/c TST thoughtfully included our statements & so-called “manifestos” as supporting evidence, even though they expose some gaping holes in their argument and raise serious questions about how TST treats people.

Spokane auto insurance costs by marital status and gender
Spokane auto insurance costs by marital status and gender: The average rate for men and women is more or less similar to the median rate for female drivers. Couples often drive with a spouse’s permission more frequently and share the insurance premium. In Texas, a person married to the policyholder pays more or less than the average annual rate. Other factors include age, gender and age at the time drivers of a similar age are listed. In Texas you can legally adopt a non-owner policy for insurance under the same name as the current policy, but make sure you discuss this change with a lawyer before you take out your policy. The cost of non-owner policies is slightly higher, as in many states insurance companies will charge less for a policy that is un-owners of a car than a policy that is owned by a family member. Texas law requires only that a person is named as a “named insured” on a policy and all policies are automatically registered to be operated. But non-owners typically have to pay the same.

Business Insurance
Business Insurance is an insurance company that specializes in many areas of the United States but also sells a variety of insurance policies and financial solutions to insure your financial assets. You don’t always have that much say over any one person as an insurance provider, but your role in determining your own financial plan is to find your own balance, and this should be your only hope in a future life. This is something that I’ll say one more time. One of the things I’ve learned from the Insurance Industry is how very few people put the necessary and necessary time into the careers and decisions that go along with being an insurance agent. There is very little that you can do to set yourself as an independent agent without having to make yourself into a Hollywood executive and not an insurance agent. So this leads into something that’s more important than ever to make sure that you’re not part of a financial organization which is heavily dependent upon government assistance. That’s why I have.
Spokane car insurance costs by incident history
Spokane car insurance costs by incident history and county are included, and rates can vary according to county. Cost per year varies by type of car accident. Low-mileage drivers pay a lot for their car insurance, so they’re taking up a lot of money. However, if they have kids, they might be thinking less about how much their premiums will cost — especially because the average auto insurance rate is very high on this road trip. So we’ve broken it down for you: the cost and benefits of getting a few dollars a month, to see how much you and your family can save. $5,000 is the cheapest amount to get, from a non-standard car insurance company, for a young married guy who chooses the cheapest auto insurance for the cheapest price. They were under 25 years old, paid insurance and I didn’t and only had expired and didn’t have any past accidents/accidents. This is for a few thousand with two kids and their high insurance costs seem.
Life Insurance
Life Insurance Company, as amended, by inserting New Jersey after New York . The amended code excludes carrot , spine , and stitch (as defined by chapter 31D), but expressly exempts counsel and cooperation from services provided by insurer as insurance . The code includes the exception for counsel and cooperation . Chapter 51(a) was amended in the last legislative session to read counsel provided by insurer and cooperation as defined by sections 561.1 and 794.1. Section 776.3(b) (which is also amended), reads the insurer as insurance . See also counsel provided by insurer and cooperation as defined by sections 462.5 and 794.1; added to title, the court (title, amended as amended under chapter 29D), and counsel provided by insurer ..

The Gecko
I dance when I paint.
I don’t mean this to sound like some kind of barfy New-Age metaphor; rest assured that I haven’t yet become the “I wear floral caftans and practice yoga and drink kale smoothies and shop at Whole Foods and the whole universe dances through me, rama-lama-ding-dong” version of myself. I mean to say that I dance in the actual sense of moving rhythmically as I wield my brush. There are good practical reasons for doing this … sometimes it’s important to rehearse a tricky stroke before committing it to canvas, so I trace in the air what I intend to do, and prepare myself in advance for the actual execution. Some strokes are so complex in their trajectory, twisting and turning on themselves like the coils of the small intestine, that I need to make a few practice tries first. I have to use my whole arm, from shoulder to fingertip, and on really long strokes, dozens of other muscle groups come into play. Add some music, a soupçon of dramatic flair, and voilà! Dancing. But there is another, weirder aspect to what I do with my body when I paint. When my painting is going well, when I’m really “in the zone”, it feels like I am physically manipulating the forces within the composition. And by “forces” I mean actual dynamic forces … like torque, shear, tension, compression, lift, drag, gravity. These can all be represented in two dimensions, but I like to diagram them out in four. So I’ll make a range of expressive motions, which may seem to any observer like the gestures of a conductor, or a sculptor, or a magician. I may push, pull, draw out, spin, wave, smudge, swirl, scrape, all without touching the canvas. This may go on for several minutes, until I’m satisfied that I know what needs to happen. Then, and only then, I’ll make my move.
Lately, all this dancing has drawn the attention of local wildlife.
The place where I’m staying, on the northeast coast of Florida, is surrounded by water: ponds, marshes, rivers, and estuaries. Herons and egrets flap overhead, and falcons perch on the live oaks. Snakes make an occasional appearance. Because of all the swampy green space nearby, the yard is overrun with skinks, anoles, whiptails, and geckos. Our studio space has four large picture windows, and a pair of sliding glass doors. Each window has a mesh screen. Sometimes, the smallest lizards will cling to these screens and just hang out for a while. They’re probably doing this to enjoy the ventilation and to scope out the yard … but it’s a cute, endearing behavior, and it makes me strangely happy to see them.
As I was working on a particularly challenging painting, dancing out my curlicues and whatnot, this one gecko scurried up the mesh of the nearest window, and parked himself right in the middle of my view. He kept turning his head this way and that, eyeballing my progress from various awkward angles. After a few minutes of this, he climbed down the screen, crossed a few inches of patio, and zipped back up to the top of a nearby lawn chair, which allowed him to see more directly into the window. I’m guessing it was my dancing that caught his eye. Maybe he couldn’t tell if I was a threat, a large predator lumbering about on the other side of the window. Maybe he thought I was a particularly gawky crane. But, at the time, it seemed like he was interested in watching what I was doing, for he stayed in place a long time, tilting his head back and forth to look at either me or my canvas.
This may sound absurd, but I must tell you why the interest of this gecko filled me with such profound sense of validation. But in order to do so, I’ll have to plunge into a very dark place for a while, so that I may impart some important contextual information. Bear in mind that I am saying this all quite matter-of-factly, while calmly sipping my tea, without a lot of handwringing or lip-quivering or Sturm und Drang, so please don’t panic as you read. What follows is not meant to worry you, nor am I merely bemoaning my bad fortune … rather, I wish to paint this oddly joyful experience in a fuller, more revealing light. So bear with me for a moment, through a few paragraphs of heavy weather, and I promise that we’ll eventually find our way to a happy ending, the kind you’ve come to expect from my stories.
The fact is, I’m in trouble. Real trouble.
My bank account is now five hundred dollars in the red, with more automatic bill deductions coming in every week. My phone’s been shut off for non-payment. Pamela’s WA tabs have expired, so I can’t legally drive her … as a result, her battery’s gone dead, and she’s had unused fuel sitting in her lines for three months, which may lead to further complications. My laptop and smartphone are beginning to show signs of wear and tear, and I can’t afford to replace either. The big picture gets worse the more I look at it. I have over $160,000 in student loan debt, $9,000 in New York State tax debt, and somewhere around $50,000 in IRS debt. My bank account is likely to be seized again any day now. Because I haven’t been able to make even the bare minimum on previously established payment plans, and because I don’t have much freelance income, I have no means of negotiating for further relief. Every former address has piles of unopened mail from debt collectors. Bankruptcy will not dissolve either my scholastic or tax liabilities. Furthermore, because of my loan defaults, I cannot access my college transcripts to apply for teaching positions or degree-dependent jobs. And I’m too old and weird to be an attractive candidate for most of those appointments anyway. I have no health insurance, and can’t afford even sliding scale care to address my three broken teeth, lifelong asthma, and untreated severe depression. Free clinics cannot help with the severity of my dental and mental issues.
In short, things may seem a little bleak at present, down here in the Sunshine State. But as I said, there is a silver lining to all this … so hang tight, and in a little while I’ll lift us back up into the land of dancing and portent reptiles.
Now, I’m sure that some of you are already rolling your eyes and saying, “Well, you made your bed … quit whining and get a real job.” This seems to be the go-to response when artists don’t perform well in a capitalist society, and many people have already said as much, directly to me or among themselves. The thing is, my résumé is already full of “real jobs”: sanitation, construction, moving, disaster services, dishwashing, deliveries, landscaping, corporate video editing, darkroom printing, customer service, telemarketing, proofreading, design, teaching, consulting. I’ve worked in a car factory, a soup factory, a vineyard, a children’s hospital, a bookstore, a college library, a marketing agency, an art supply store, two publishers, five photo labs, and serviced more industries than I can even remember. I’ve designed menus and logos and show posters, I’ve bartended and filled dumpsters and hauled furniture and maintained spreadsheets. I’ve scrubbed soot off of ruined antiques, painted stripes on wastebaskets, taken dictation from lawyers, torn down drywall, pulled weeds, yanked nails, bottled whiskey, loaded ceramic tile, and demolished office cubicles. I even once helped raise a circus tent. I’ve kissed plenty of asses, both in the literal and figurative senses, for ridiculously low sums of money. I’ve done plenty of the icky stuff that nobody wants to do.
But my work ethic, skill, and earnestness simply aren’t paying off ... yet.
This is not an unusual predicament for people like me, though. The kind of jobs that folks expect me to have, based on my education and capabilities, won’t even grant me an interview, no matter how carefully I tailor my cover letter and CV, no matter how much positive energy and enthusiasm and hope I muster for the application. I’ve been completely and conscientiously sober for nearly seven years now, but even that level of commitment and self-care hasn’t done anything to change my financial situation, which has reached an all-time nadir. I’ve learned that “rock bottom” is an illusion … at the bottom of the well you’ll sometimes find not bedrock but quicksand and bobbing turds.
The inevitable question to ask, of course, is whether or not I am bringing all of this on myself. I’m sure some of you insist that I have this masochistic / self-destructive narrative that I’m adhering to, some kind of badly warped Van Gogh complex. You may feel that I remain impoverished only because of my own stubbornness, self-pity, delusions of grandeur, sloth, or outright stupidity. Some of you probably feel that I keep failing because I never apply myself properly, that I just don’t try hard enough, that I should love myself more, that all I need is a good full-time job with health insurance. You may have already thrown up your hands in frustration. I don’t begrudge you your opinion or your irritation … but to all of these things, I can only say, “I’m doing my best with what I’ve got.”
Throughout my career, I’ve been very forthright about my struggle with living … not because I am fishing for sympathy or solutions, but because I’ve come to believe that sharing such challenges openly is an essential part of my purpose as an artist. I am describing my state of crisis not to alarm you, or even to cry for help, but simply to reveal the full dimensions of my situation. I also hope that by explaining my fears and doubts I may help you to alleviate some anxiety of your own … for there is no relief quite like that of fellowship. As some of closest friends know, I have been on the precipice for my entire adulthood, and have come close many times to losing my grip altogether. Many of you can relate. Despite these troubles, though, I’ve clung stubbornly to existence, even when my fingertips are slipping on the beveled edge, just so that I could occasionally arrive at a moment like the one I had today with the gecko … moments when my life’s work seems to reveal its actual shape, when I can feel the ongoing dance of the world move through my fingers, when I am reminded that the long meandering road itself is the whole point. All those shitty jobs and sleepless nights were a vital part of the composition. They all brought me here, collectively, to this one instant, when I was dancing with a brush in my hand and a lizard was watching me from the window, a moment when everything changed.
Art is the alchemy that transforms any hardship into gold.
I hope you’ll come to understand what I mean when I say, right now, that it feels like as if I’ve inadvertently engineered my entire life just so that my passion might catch the eye of a wandering gecko.
I keep working because there is more work to be done. I keep fighting to live because I believe that I have an important message to deliver, and that I cannot rest until it is safely received. I don’t yet know what this message is, or where it comes from, or why it has been placed in my clumsy hands … but I feel burdened with the responsibility of lasting long enough to relay it. Judy Garland once told me the secret of immortality, and now a gecko is telling me the secret of artistic success.
So I am here to tell you about a gecko who was watching me paint.
I am here to tell you about a gecko who is now forever splayed on the window mesh of my mind, a gecko who stares at me with a mixture of curiosity and confusion as I struggle to keep my brush moving, as I desperately dance away from the reality of ruin, as I choose one more day of making art over surrendering to doom. I am here to tell you that this gecko is looking sideways at my canvas, with his googly roving eye, and he seems quite pleased with my output. I am here to tell you that this gecko has become my biggest fan; if I achieve nothing else in my career I’ve at least entertained one living creature with my artistry.
I am here to tell you that the gecko is delivering a message through me to you … on behalf of all the artists who have ever lived and died in total obscurity, all the forgotten and abandoned and hopeless creators who valued experiences more than fiscal solvency, those who saw many of the world’s most wonderful riches despite having no money or fame or toothpaste. My friend the gecko is saying to us, you and I, that it’s all been worth it. Every flawed and stupid choice we’ve made has been the right one, as long as each of us keeps trying our best to write a compelling poem with our life story. The gecko is telling us, you and me both, that everything’s going to be okay. He says that no effort is wasted, that no bravery goes completely unnoticed, that no talent is ever squandered if it has brought comfort or amusement or a moment of beauty to others. He says that we won’t be remembered for our poverty, but we will be remembered for our grace under duress. The gecko is assuring us that no sincere artist is a failure. The gecko believes in you and me, just as I believe in you and me. In fact, the gecko just whispered to me now that you’re the richest person he’s ever seen, and that your dance moves are awesome. The gecko told me to tell you to keep dancing, no matter what, for as long as you can, and to never give up on your gifts, which are plentiful and splendid and rare. He says he admires your brilliance, and your stamina, and your coordination. He says that he can see the whole world dancing in your hands.

hello fam!! It’s ya girl mac here with a new charrie bc katie mcgrath is queen!! some...things about her under the cut.
HISTORY
british blood on her father’s side, American-born mother. They met while her mother madision was studying abroad
grew up in nyc
childhood household was a bit ‘old-fashioned.’ her father brought in the money he got from being in a high-ranking position of a car company and her mother had a tailoring business that she ran from home. this isn’t to say that they didn’t love each other, or that it was a toxic relationship per say --- merely not very progressive.
as she got older, cordelia realized she didn’t want to be just like her mother, constantly at her father’s beck and call. so she made the surge to study law, to her parents’ slight concern. they didn’t think she would make it.
but cordelia was stubborn and ambitious and climbed her way into the top of her class and into a spot at harvard law.
she was picked up as a lawyer for mckay chadwell, pllc in seattle, wa. she had been there (and in seattle) for five years now.
MISC
cordelia is a cynic and doesn’t really believe in the inherent good of the world and people -- can’t exactly be a corporate lawyer and have a pure heart of gold.
can come across as a little intense
when she wants her way, she will get it
understands the morally grey aspects of life --- doesn’t necessarily live them but understands the reasoning well enough
her friends call her cora. she doesn’t have many friends
lives in a fairly well-off apartment --- part of it was paid for by her father when she first moved; she may not believe in his outlook on gender roles, but money is money and she is a practical person at heart.
I’m have to actually make icons for cordelia since 90% of her resources are from merlin and tudors and that does not vibe with cora so.... yeah. but hmu. i’ll try to think of connections.

Thomson International Onion Recall
Last week, the CDC and FDA told US consumers that the mystery Salmonella outbreak finally had a confirmed source: onions. Now, those with onions at home are wondering “Which onions have been recalled?” Look no further. Here is the latest in the Thomson International Onion Recall.
Thomson International Onion Recall
On August 1, 2020, Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California announced its recall of Red, Yellow, White, and Sweet Yellow Onions shipped from May 1, 2020 through the present.  According to the notice, “[t]he onions are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
The affected Onions were distributed to wholesalers, restaurants, and retail stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.
Labels, Brands, and Specs
The notice goes on to specify that the affected onions were “distributed in 5 lbs. carton. 10 lbs. carton. 25 lbs. carton. 40 lbs. carton, 50 lbs. carton. bulk, 2 lb. mesh sacks, and 3 lb. mesh sacks, 5 lb. mesh sacks, 10 lb. mesh sacks 25 lbs. mesh sacks, 50 lbs. mesh sacks under the brand names Thomson  Premium, TLC Thomson International, Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Imperial Fresh, Kroger, Utah Onions and Food Lion.”
Here are some of the labels and packaging photos:
It is important to note that more brands and suppliers may be involved in this outbreak. As of now no specific source of contamination or contaminated shipment has been identified, and FDA is also investigating other potential sources of contamination and has not yet reached a final conclusion.
The Outbreak in the US
396 total illnesses have been reported to date including 59 hospitalizations.  States with cases include: AK (6), AZ (14), CA (49), CO (10), FL (3), ID (5), IL (10), IN (2), IA (15), KS (1), KY (1), ME (4), MD (1), MI (23), MN (10), MO (6), MT (33), NE (5), NV (5), NY (4), NC (3), ND (5), OH (7), OR (71), PA (2), SC (1), SD (11), TN (5), TX (1), UT (61), VA (4), WA (2), WI (5), and WY (11).
The investigation is ongoing.
The Outbreak in Canada
In Canada, at least 114 people have gotten Salmonella food poisoning.  16 people have been hospitalized in the red onions Salmonella outbreak.  Here is the latest Canadian case count: British Columbia (43), Alberta (55), Manitoba (13), Ontario (2), and Prince Edward Island (1). The individual from Prince Edward Island reported traveling to Alberta before becoming ill. Saskatchewan has not reported any confirmed illnesses related to this outbreak, but provincial public health authorities are investigating some Salmonella Newport illnesses in the province.
The investigation is ongoing.
About Salmonella Newport
Salmonella Newport (Salmonella enterica serovar newport) is a serotype of Salmonella that is known to cause infection in humans. Known for its resistance to various drugs, Salmonella Newport is known to originate from animals – namely farm animals like cows, horses, goats, etc. In fact, in 2004, the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians named Salmonella Newport as an “emerging disease.” The National Veterinary Services Laboratories also listed Salmonella Newport as “one of the top ten most frequently identified Salmonella serotypes from U.S. cattle from July 1998 through June 1999.”
The symptoms for Salmonella Newport are alike to those of other Salmonella serotypes, and include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Abdominal cramps
Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
Fever.
Chills.
Headache.
Recommendations
The FDA recommends that consumers who have any Red, Yellow, White, and Sweet Yellow Onions under the above brand names, or who cannot tell if their onions are from Thomson International, should immediately discard these products and disinfect any surfaces that came into contact with the onions.
In the meantime, “consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve red, white, yellow, or sweet onions from Thomson International, Inc. or products containing such onions. If you cannot tell if your onion is from Thomson International Inc., or your food product contains such onions, you should not eat, sell, or serve it, and should throw it out.”
The Public Health Agency of Canada has advised, “Until more is known about the outbreak, individuals in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario are advised to not eat any red onions imported to Canada from the U.S., including any food products that contain raw red onions imported from U.S.. Retailers and restaurants in these locations are also advised not to use, sell or serve red onions imported from the U.S. Red onions grown in Canada are not affected by this advice.”
If you or someone you love is sick after eating onions, urgent medical attention is recommended. Make sure to ask for a stool test to ensure Salmonella is the cause of your illness.

These real estate players have raised a bundle for Biden
From left: RXR Realty’s Scott Rechler, Chicago real estate mogul Neil Bluhm, Joe Biden, Adler Group’s Michael Adler, L.A.-based developer Jeff Worthe (Credit: Getty Images, Adler Group, iStock)
Scott Rechler is a self-described “longtime Biden supporter.”
But the RXR Realty CEO is one of dozens of real estate powerhouses who have raised big money for the former vice president’s 2020 presidential campaign.
In a Friday news dump on Dec. 27, Joe Biden’s team released a list of 259 “volunteer fundraisers” — individuals who had raised at least $25,000 for the campaign. In addition to the world of entertainment and politics, numerous real estate players dot the list.
An analysis by The Real Deal identified at least 35 people who have significant real estate industry ties, including Los Angeles developer Jeff Worthe, head of Worthe Real Estate Group; and billionaires Neil Bluhm, the Chicago real estate mogul who is now managing director of Walton Street Capital; and George Marcus, founder and chairman of Marcus & Millichap.
David Birdsell, a professor at Baruch College’s Marxe School of Public and International Affairs in New York, said the number of contributors could have been far higher.
“I think it is significant that only 35 people in this industry have raised $25,000 or more” for Biden he said, while noting that the real estate industry traditionally skews Republican.
Biden’s backers The three-dozen industry movers on Biden’s $25,000 and up list come from across the U.S.
Some of the others include Miami investor Michael M. Adler, whose Adler Group has developed and acquired more than 20 million square feet of industrial, office and retail space, and over 8,000 residential units. Another big name is Thad Wong, who co-founded @properties, Chicago’s dominant residential brokerage. The firm was No. 1 in the city with $6.54 billion in sales, according to a TRD March 2019 ranking.
Wong and Bluhm each hosted separate fundraisers for Biden at their homes in September. At the event in his downtown Chicago home, Bluhm introduced the former vice president, telling guests that rival presidential candidates Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders “don’t represent the Democratic Party” he supports, adding he thought Biden had the best shot at defeating President Trump.
“Mr Bluhm is right,” Sanders later responded in a statement to CNN. “The Democratic Party I represent is the party of the working class — not billionaires.”
Biden’s campaign did not explain the timing of its Dec. 27 disclosure — the list’s release was not required — and did not respond to questions from TRD about whether there were any potential conflicts among its contributors.
“At a national level you’re going to see much less concern for taking real estate money than you might in New York City, where it is such a hot-button issue,” Birdsell said. Corporate money and financial-services money caused greater alarm, he said.
Barry Gosin, the CEO of Newmark Group was also on the list; as was Bruce Mosler, chairman of global brokerage at Cushman & Wakefield; Bob Clark, CEO of Chicago-based development and construction firm Clayco; Martha Karsh, co-founder of Beverly Hills-based Clark & Karsh — an architecture, design and development firm — and Stewart W. Bainum Jr., chairman of Maryland-based Choice Hotels International, which franchises more than 7,000 hotels in 40 countries.
Tom Hendrickson, a North Carolina real estate investor and developer, is another top bundler. Hendrickson confirmed he had raised funds for Biden but declined to comment further, when contacted over LinkedIn.
David R. Topping, a Miami-based partner at ABC Properties, said he was a lifelong Republican who decided to back Biden, after supporting Trump in the last election. “I’m delighted to ask other friends of mine who have been lifelong Republicans to join also,” he said.
Mitchell Berger, a founder of the Florida law firm Berger Singerman, was also on the list. The firm has a significant real estate practice group and has helped negotiate hotel acquisitions, in addition to representing firms like New York-based Terranova Properties and private prisons operator Geo Group. Thomas Safran, whose Safran & Associates is a prolific developer of luxury and affordable housing in Southern California, is another.
Q4 fundraising haul
On Jan. 2, Biden’s campaign announced it had raised $22.7 million in the fourth quarter. The figure was more than previous months and was $1.5 million ahead of what Warren took in. But he still lagged former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigeig; and was far behind the $34.5 million Sanders collected.
And unlike Sanders, who released a $2.5 trillion housing plan in September, Biden has yet to offer a comprehensive housing plan. He has stated previously that he wants to make it easier to build denser affordable housing near public transportation, has pledged to increase the energy efficiency of low-income housing and has said he wants to house all formerly incarcerated people.

Five reasons for choosing a professional photographer for your Personal Branding needs
OK, sometimes you need to explain to the boss why you’ve spent the money on a knowledgeable photographer, rather than spending the money buying his son/daughter a new camera…
This seems to particularly apply when it comes to the Corporate Head-shot – seemingly such a simple and innocent task, yet so easy for it to go wrong too.
1) Your photos will look professional
Some what indefinable, until you see an amateur photograph, then it becomes immediately obvious. You will look at least as excellent as your competitors, and with the right photographer, a whole lot better.
2) They won’t look cheesy
A professional photographer knows how to position a individual, how to arrange them and crucially how to interact with them to not get that “cheesy grin” look, but instead something instinctive, poised and friendly.
3) The camera only captures what it sees
And your professional will make sure that what is seen is properly lit, properly positioned, properly composed. As well as using many and varied bits of equipment for lighting and lighting control, simply their adventure in handling simple equipment will create a vast difference.
Depending on what you need they can bring a portable studio, maximizing the quality and your time. A plain portable studio can be used to capture photographs of all staff very quickly and efficiently.
4) Herding Cats!
Part of the job is making sure that all the pictures are captured within the opportunity obtainable and with smallest job interruption. A knowledgeable photographer knows how to sequence and manage the workflow – to make the most of their own time and yours.
5) It will pay for itself
Your professional will sit down with and discuss what kinds of photographs you need and what styles. Lawyers, bankers and financial folk need to look confident – but definitely not smug! Doctors, client reps, sales staff need to look approachable, friendly and knowledgeable. Company directors need to be assured, but not distant.
Remember you get what you pay for and what you ask for, so be clear with your photographer about how the images will be used – for web, for press, for magazines, for publications, for PowerPoint. The photographer will capture and prepare the images in distinct ways depending on how they will be used.
You can come to us to use our studio, or we have a full traveling studio so we can come to you. All images are retouched for those zits, wrinkles etc that you don’t really want 🙂
We recommend photographing as many people as possible through one shoot to keep your costs down.

20 The World’s Most Famous Brands Very First Products
New Post has been published on https://www.apegeo.com/first-product-famous-brands/
20 The World’s Most Famous Brands Very First Products
We’ve all gotta start somewhere! It can be hard to imagine some of the most iconic and ubiquitous brands of today as a struggling start-up, yet every company has its own origin story.
While many people like to romanticize and sometimes exaggerate the ‘bootstrap ideology’ of self-made billionaires building the foundations of business empires in their garages, some companies do have genuinely humble and surprising beginnings, and they are really interesting to see!
This list, compiled by Apegeo, looks at the baby photos of some of the business world’s greatest celebrities. Go back in time to when Amazon was just a book store, and Samsung just a guy with a phone,. Witness these mega-corporations taking their very first steps toward fame!
Scroll down to check them out for yourself below, and let us know what you think in the comments!
#1 Rice Cooker (1946)
var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth; if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) []).push(); if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width < 1140 ) /* tablet landscape */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="pub-7813024252608044" data-ad-slot="9641215446" data-ad-format="auto">'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle if ( quads_screen_width >= 768 && quads_screen_width < 1024 ) if ( quads_screen_width < 768 )
Founders – Masaru Ibuka, Akio Morita
First location – Tokyo, Japan
After World War II, Sony founder Masaru Ibuka invented a product to try and serve the millions of homes who had electricity but lacked the appliances to use it. The result was this electric rice cooker.
Released under the business name Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute, before Sony itself became an incorporated company, the rice cooker was little more than some aluminium electrodes on the bottom of a wooden bucket. Depending on the unregulated electric current at the time, the kind of rice or how much water was used, the rice generally ended up served as overcooked mush or undercooked grain.
Because of this, the product was never actually released onto the market. Instead, a prototype now sits ensconced in glass at the Sony Archives in Shinagawa, a relic from a distant age before electronic gadgets were the norm. Source: Gizmodo sony
#2 Online Bookstore (1994)
Founders – Jeff Bezos
First location – Bellevue, WA
Amazon began as an online bookstore in way back in 1994. Founder Jeff Bezos decided at first to call the bookstore “Cadabra,” He later changed the name to Amazon.com, Inc. a few months later, after a lawyer misheard its original name as “cadaver.”
Bezos selected the name Amazon by looking through the dictionary; he settled on “Amazon” because it was a place that was “exotic and different”, just as he had envisioned for his Internet enterprise. The Amazon River, he noted, was the biggest river in the world, and he planned to make his store the biggest bookstore in the world. Additionally, a name that began with “A” was preferred because it would probably be at the top of an alphabetized list. #3 Stationary Delivery (1943)
Founders – Ingvar Kamprad
First location – Älmhult, Sweden
IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad showed entrepreneurial promise from a young age. At age 5, he began buying matches in bulk from Stockholm and selling them to neighbors for a profit. He later moved on to selling flower seeds, greeting cards, Christmas tree decorations, and more.
In 1943, when he was 17, Kamprad founded IKEA from his uncle’s kitchen table. It began as a mail-order business, selling a variety of items like stockings, jewelry, watches, pens, and picture frames. Kamprad added the first piece of furniture to the company’s offerings a few years later. Furniture sales got even bigger with the introduction of the famous IKEA catalog in 1951 and the first showroom in 1953. IKEA’s furniture soon became the focal point of the company as it began phasing out all other products over the next few years. Source: Ikea
#4 Card Game (1889)
Founders – Fusajiro Yamauchi
First location – Kyoto, Japan
Nintendo, the video game brand that launched such 1980s and ’90s-era franchises as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon, is actually one of the older companies on this list. It was founded in 1889 as a playing card company based in Kyoto, Japan. The cards (named hanafuda, or “flower cards” for their ornate floral imagery) were popular among the organized crime gangs that inhabited Japan’s gambling halls. The company’s origins are even reflected in its name: When separated into three characters, “Nin-ten-do” roughly translates to “Leave luck to heaven,” or “Work hard, but in the end it is in heaven’s hands.” Source: wikipedia
#5 Wooden Toys (1923)
Founders – Ole Kirk Christiansen
First location – Billund, Denmark
The toy brand that’s best known for its plastic, interlocking bricks was founded by a carpenter.
Struggling to find enough wood to build furniture during Denmark’s recession of the 1930s, Ole Kirk Kristiansen began turning wood scraps into children’s toys. Some of LEGO’s first products included toy trains, automobiles, and a wooden duck on wheels that quacked when pulled.
When he started experimenting with plastic toys in 1947, most department stores weren’t interested. Fortunately for future generations of LEGO builders, that didn’t discourage him, and plastic bricks eventually became the focus of the company. Source: Lego
#6 Computer Apple I (1976)
Founders – S.Jobs, S.Wozniak, R.Wayne
First location – Cupertino, CA
Steve Wozniak originally assembled the microcomputer Apple I in 1975 for a Homebrew Computer Club meeting in Silicon Valley. Wozniak said, that the basic machine was “the first time in history anyone had typed a character on a keyboard and seen it show up on their own computer’s screen right in front of them.”
Another club member, Steve Jobs, helped to sell 50 orders of the machine for $500 each to a local computer store. The success of the sales made the pair over $50,000 for and encouraged them to get to work on the Apple II.
The rest is history.

#7 Search Engine (1998)
Founders – Larry Page, Sergey Brin
First location – Menlo Park, CA
Google has its origins in “BackRub”, a research project that was begun in 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in Stanford, California. The project initially also involved an unofficial “third founder”, Scott Hassan, the lead programmer who wrote much of the code for the original Google Search engine, but left before Google was officially founded as a company.
Page’s ‘web crawler’ began exploring the web in March 1996, with Page’s own Stanford home page serving as the only starting point.
The first version of Google was released in August 1996 on the Stanford website. It used nearly half of Stanford’s entire network bandwidth. Source: Wikipedia Google

#9 Automatic Loom (1926)
Founders – Kiichiro Toyoda
First location – Nagoya, Japan
Toyota was founded in 1926 as Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd. by Sakichi Toyoda, the inventor of a series of manual and machine-powered looms. The most impressive of these was the Toyoda Automatic Loom, Type G, a completely automatic high-speed loom featuring the ability to change shuttles without stopping and dozens of other innovations. At the time it was the world’s most advanced loom, delivering a dramatic improvement in quality and a twenty-fold increase in productivity.
In 2007, this machine was registered as item No. 16 in the Mechanical Engineering Heritage of Japan as “a landmark achievement that advanced the global textile industry and laid the foundation for the development of the Toyota Group.” Source: Wikipedia Toyota,Toyota
#10 Memory Chip (1969)
Founders – Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce
First location – Mountain View, CA
Intel was founded in Mountain View, California, in 1968 by Gordon E. Moore (known for “Moore’s law”), a chemist, and Robert Noyce, a physicist and co-inventor of the integrated circuit.
When Intel began they did not make processors, as they are famous for now, they made memory. Specifically SRAM, DRAM, and EPROMs. The very first product Intel released, in April of 1969, was the 3101 64-bit SRAM. It was made on the new, and fast Schottky Bipolar process. This made it very fast (access times of 60ns) but very power hungry. It dissipated 525mW, over half a watt, for 64-bits of memory. #11 Image Computer (1986)
Founders – Edwin Catmull, Alvy Ray Smith, Steve Jobs
First location – Richmond, CA
Pixar was founded as The Graphics Group, which is one third of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm that was launched in 1979 with the hiring of Dr. Ed Catmull from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), where he was in charge of the Computer Graphics Lab (CGL). At NYIT, the researchers pioneered many of the CG foundation techniques—in particular the invention of the “alpha channel.”
Initially, Pixar was a high-end computer hardware company whose core product was the Pixar Image Computer, a system primarily sold to government agencies and the medical community. One of the buyers of Pixar Image Computers was Disney Studios, whose corporate parent would ultimately become its most important partner. Source: Fandom wikipedia,Pixar

#13 Microblogging Service (2006)
Founders – Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, Evan Williams
First location – San Francisco, CA
Twitter started in 2006 when the podcasting company Odeo realized they needed to reinvent themselves and began brainstorming new creative ideas. Jack Dorsey introduced the idea of creating an SMS that would allow a user to communicate with a small group of people.
Twitter was first called “status” until the group looked in the dictionary for names and found twitter which fit it perfectly. The original product name was twttr.
The project work began on March 21, 2006, when Dorsey published the first Twitter message: “just setting up my twttr”. The prototype for twitter was tested as an internal service for Odeo employees but later launched publicly in July 2006.
In October 2006, Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams formed Obvious Corporation with other members from Odeo. They then bought out Odeo from the investors and other shareholders. In April of 2007, Twitter became its own company. Source: Profile Rehab dailymail, biz
#14 Distribution Of Japanese Shoes (1964)
Founders – Bill Bowerman, Phil Knight
First location – Eugene, OR
The origins of Nike can be traced back to a school paper for a small-business class. Phil Knight was enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business when he got the idea for a Japanese shoe company that manufactured quality products at lower costs than the German brands that dominated the market at the time. The theme of his essay titled “Can Japanese Sports Shoes Do to German Sports Shoes What Japanese Cameras Have Done to German Cameras?” inspired him to found a real-life business in 1964. Nike—then Blue Ribbon Sports—began as a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger Running Shoes made in Japan. Knight initially sold the shoes himself from the back of his station wagon at Oregon University track meets. Source: Cnn,Nike
#15 Fast-Food Restaurant (1955)
Founders – Richard McDonald, Maurice McDonald
First location – San Bernardino, CA
In 1937 Patrick McDonald opened “The Airdrome”, a food stand, on Huntington Drive (Route 66) near the Monrovia Airport in the Los Angeles County city of Monrovia, California with hot dogs being one of the first items sold. Hamburgers were later added to the menu at a cost of ten cents with all-you-can-drink orange juice at five cents. In 1940, sons Maurice and Richard moved the entire building to San Bernardino, California. The restaurant was renamed “McDonald’s Bar-B-Que” and had 25 menu items, mostly barbecue.
In 1954, Ray Kroc, a seller of Prince Castle brand Multimixer milkshake machines, learned that the McDonald brothers were using eight of his machines in their San Bernardino restaurant. His curiosity was piqued, and he went to take a look at the restaurant. He was joined by good friend Charles Lewis who had suggested to Kroc several improvements to the McDonald’s burger recipe.
Kroc was so impressed by the brothers’ restaurant that he offered to set up a national franchise, starting with the ‘original’ Mcdonalds (as we know it today) in Des Plaines, Illinois, near Chicago. It began with a simple menu of nine items including burgers, fries, milkshake, juice and milk. Source: Wikipedia Mcdonalds, people
#16 Animation “Alice Comedies” (1923)
Founders – Walt Disney, Roy O. Disney
First location – Los Angeles, CA
The Alice Comedies are a series of animated cartoons created by Walt Disney in the 1920s, in which a live action little girl named Alice (originally played by Virginia Davis) and an animated cat named Julius have adventures in an animated landscape.
Disney, Ub Iwerks, and their staff made the first Alice Comedy, a one-reel (ten-minute) short subject titled Alice’s Wonderland, while still heading the failing Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. After completing the film, the studio went bankrupt and was forced to shut down. After raising money by working as a freelance photographer, Disney bought a one-way train ticket to Los Angeles, California to live with his uncle Robert and his brother Roy. In California, Disney continued to send out proposals for the Alice series, in hopes of a distribution deal, which was finally arranged through Winkler Pictures, run by Margaret J. Winkler and her fianceé, Charles Mintz.
Although seen as cute and funny in their time, the Alice Comedies contain content which might be considered surprising and somewhat harsh today. Although Alice is a little girl, she spends much of her time avoiding danger, and even getting kidnapped by the cartoon villains, threatened with such perils as being tied to a log in a sawmill. Although all of Alice’s threats are cartoon drawings, some might find the imagery a bit disturbing due to the character’s young age, and the fact that she is a real person, or they might find it simply light-hearted and fun, due to the portrayal. #17 Coffee Shop (1971)
Founders – Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, Gordon Bowker
First location – Seattle, WA
The first Starbucks was opened in Seattle, Washington, on March 31, 1971, by three partners who met while they were students at the University of San Francisco: English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting entrepreneur Alfred Peet after he taught them his style of roasting beans. Bowker recalls that Terry Heckler, with whom Bowker owned an advertising agency, thought words beginning with “st” were powerful. The founders brainstormed a list of words beginning with “st”, and eventually landed on “Starbo”, a mining town in the Cascade Range. From there, the group remembered “Starbuck,” the name of the chief mate in the book Moby-Dick. Bowker said, “Moby-Dick didn’t have anything to do with Starbucks directly; it was only coincidental that the sound seemed to make sense.”
The first Starbucks store was located in Seattle at 2000 Western Avenue from 1971–1976. This cafe was later moved to 1912 Pike Place. During this time, the company only sold roasted whole coffee beans and did not yet brew coffee to sell. During their first year of operation, they purchased green coffee beans from Peet’s, then began buying directly from growers. Source: Wikipedia BBC,sites.google
#18 Game “Zombi” (1986)
Founders – Christian Guillemot, Claude Guillemot, Gérard Guillemot, Michel Guillemot, Yves Guillemot
First location – Carentoir, France
Ubisoft Entertainment is a French video game company headquartered in Montreuil with several development studios across the world.
The Guillemot family had established themselves as a farming support business for farmers in the Brittany province in northwest France and nearby regions, including into the United Kingdom. The five sons of the family – Christian, Claude, Gérard, Michel and Yves – helped with the sales, distribution, accounting and management of the company with their parents prior to university. All five gained business experience while at university, which they brought back to the family business to help improve it, at a time where farming businesses were starting to wane. The brothers came up with the idea of diversification to sell other products of use to farmers; Claude began with selling CD audio media, and later the brothers expanded to computers and additional software which included video games.
In the early 1980s, they saw that the costs of buying computers and software from a French supplier was more expensive than buying the same materials in the United Kingdom and shipping to France, and came upon the idea of a mail-order business around computers and software. Their mother said they could start their own business this way as long as they managed it themselves and equally split its shares between the five of them. Their first business was Guillemot Informatique, founded in 1984.
They originally only sold through mail order, but soon were getting orders from French retailers, since they were able to undercut other suppliers by up to 50% of the cost of new titles. By 1986, this company was earning about 40 million French francs (roughly US$5.8 million at that time). In 1985, the brothers established Guillemot Corporation for similar distribution of computer hardware. As demand continued, the brothers recognised that video game software was becoming a lucrative property, and decided that they needed to get into the development side of the industry, already having insight on the publication and distribution side.Ubi Soft was founded by the brothers on 28 March 1986 The name “Ubi Soft” was selected to represent “ubiquitous” software.
