By 2030, Dubai is set to be one of the world's wealthiest cities
When we talk about Dubai, a visual rich of impossibly high skyscrapers, oil, and Sheikhs comes to mind. A theme that is prevalent in all these thoughts is wealth. As a recent report by Henley and Partners suggests, it will attain that title by 2030.Â
The report claims that Dubai, Mumbai and Shenzhen will be breaking into the list of the Worldâs top 20 wealthiest cities by the year 2030. Dubai is already home to 67,900 millionaires, 202 centi-millionaires (people with net assets of $100 million or more), and 13 billionaires.Â
The rapidly growing industries of real estate, transportation, oil, gas, tourism and financial services are conspiring to boost the emirate's wealth. While the real estate property developers in Dubai are adding to the list of attractive tourist and housing architectural marvels, the mega structures such as Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeriah, and the Museum of future draw the attention of the world to the region.
The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) acts as a hub that assists family businesses and ultra-high net worth individuals (HNWI) in legacy and succession plans, it is promised to help Dubai climb higher on the ladder from its 23rd rank on the list of globally wealthiest countries.
Richest Cities set to be rivalled by Dubai.
A report published in June this year by New World Wealth claimed that the UAE is expected to overtake the wealthiest countries, such as the US and UK. These destinations attracted the most significant inflows globally in 2022.
The emirate of Dubai has been strategically marketed as an international hub with a high-income economy, free trade, low tax rate, and zero income tax acting as the catalyst driving start-ups and small international businesses to move to Dubai.
Easy regulations, renowned with lavish lifestyles, and luxury residential projects in Dubai have helped the city to bag its position on the list.Â
Dubai to become the Richest City.
As it stands, the USA dominates the list with five cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Dallas, all under the top 10. Itâs 345,600 total millionaires is also larger than that of Dubai.
It is worth reminding you that we are comparing a city vs a country. But it goes on to show the stiff competition Dubai has lying ahead.
A similar report by Henley and Partners also claims that if Dubai continues accelerating its growth, the city might even break into the top 20 by 2030. This goes on proves that the emirate of wonders is ready to compete with the big players.

In the footsteps of the Incan ancestors
Peruvian children in traditional clothing
Peru means âland of abundanceâ(in Aymara language) and that is a perfectly chosen word to describe this rich, diverse and colourful country. It is the third largest country in South America after Brazil and Argentina.
Peru has big amounts of mineral, agricultural and marine resources that have long served as its economic foundation.
The cold Peruvian current where upwelling brings abundant nutrients to the water surface there the beneficial effects of the sunlight results in plankton growth, which make these waters one of the world's greatest fishing grounds.
In spite of Peru's tropical location in the Southern Hemisphere it has enormous differences in climate, economical activities and ways of life.Peru is normally divided into three main geographic zones. The Andean highlands, the arid coastline and the largely unpopulated Peruvian Amazon, the rainforest.
This large geographical diversity gives Peru one of the greatest biodiversities in the world. In the upcoming section we will follow the footsteps of the Peruvian forefathers to discover more about this great and colourful country.
First footstep:đŁ
Our first footstep is the pre Incan culture.
The civilization âCaralâ marks the beginning of the Peruvian, as well as the rest of the American continentâs history.
It is estimated to be as old as 5000 years, making it contemporary with the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China and India.
Nevertheless, without leaving much trace of evidence of its existence the caral civilization suddenly disappeared and was replaced by the âChavinâ civilization.
In that way the history kept repeating itself and civilization followed civilization, some disappeared by themselves others were conquered by stronger ones.
Nasca Lines, Peru
Second Footstep:đŁđŁ
Our second footstep is the Nazca. The Nazcas predated the Incas by as much as 2000 years, in other words 800 B.C and are most famous for having drawn the Nazca lines.
These are huge drawings representing a hummingbird, spider, fish, condor, heron, monkey, lizard, cat, dog and a human or some of the lines are just lines. By making shallow incisions in the desert floor, removing stones and leaving differently coloured dirt exposed, the lines they drew have been preserved during thousands of years due to the extreme environmental circumstances that have helped to preserve them.
The purpose of the lines is unclear but experts presume their purposes are religious.
Lake Titicaca, Peru
Third Footstep:đŁđŁđŁ
The third footstep is Lake Titicaca. This important lake has a maximum depth of 280 meters and is shared by Peru and Bolivia and is situated high up in the Andes at 3.812 metres. It is the world's highest navigable lake and it is said to be the birthplace of the Incas. The waters of lake Titicaca are famously still and brightly reflexive.
This fresh water lake, that also is one of South Americaâs largest lakes, is shaped as a puma, herefrom its name Titicaca meaning puma in Aymara language. Today we can see floating villages made of reeds on the lake, where the Uros people live. They rely on fishing and tourism for survival.
We also find protected aquatic wildlife by the lake, special and unique are the giant frogs.
Statue of Pachacutec, Aguas Calientes, Peru
Fourth Footstep:đŁđŁđŁđŁ
The forth footstep are the Incas.
The Incan Empire was the last chapter of thousands of years of Andean civilization directly preceded by two other large scale Empires, the Tiwanaku 300-1100 A.C in the lake Titicaca region and the Wari or Huari 600-1100 A.C near the city of Ayacucho.
As said earlier the Incan civilization was born by the shores of lake Titicaca and grew to become an Empire, at the time known as ârealm of the four partsâ. It was the largest Empire in pre-Columbian America.
No monetary currency was used in the Incan Empire but exchange of goods and taxes consisted of a labour obligation of a person to the Empire. Another interesting fact is that they used knotted strings or so called â quipusâ for record keeping and written communication.
The Incas rose to power in the early 13th century and their last stronghold was conquered in 1572 by Spanish conquerors.
Ruins of the Empire can be found across Peru today, some of which are hidden by the rainforest's intense vegetation.
Machu Picchu, Peru
Fifth Footstep:đŁđŁđŁđŁđŁ
One of these ruins and our fifth footstep is Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu the city in the clouds.Â
Machu Picchu is one of the only Inca towns to have survived the Spanish conquest.
Believed to have been built in the 1400âs Machu Picchu got the nickname âthe lost city of the Incasâ because it is said that the Spanish never set foot there.
Because of its position up of two fault lines it experiences frequent earthquakes but thanks to the combination of its intelligent design and sturdy building materials it has survived through time.
There are 150 buildings in this old site and they vary from temples to bathhouses.
Without doubt one of the most impressive architectural features of Machu Picchu is the renowned staircase with 100 steps that have been carved out of one single piece of stone.
On top of that and as far as we know the Incas didnât have any wheels thus it had to have been hauled to the summit by hand or carved out of the mountain itself.
Machu Picchu translated from Quechua means âold mountain âor âold peakâ and it was cleverly built to withstand earthquakes and to avoid landslides. Water collecting systems were built under the buildings inside the mountains.
These systems collected water in drainage basins and the water was later redistributed throughout Machu Picchu and surroundings.
Roads leading to and from Machu Picchu were connected to the Empireâs transport system including paths, bridges and mountain tracks that stretched all over Peru.
Rainbow Mountains
Sixths Footstep:đŁđŁđŁđŁđŁđŁ
Even though our sixth footstep doesnât involve the countryâs history it is a remarkably beautiful footstep.
The rainbow mountains.Â
The colour of these mountains resembles that of a rainbow, here from the name, they are also called âMontaña de siete coloresâ (the seven coloured mountain). It is situated in the Andean mountain chain at 5.200 meters above sea level.
These beautifully multicoloured mountains with tones of turquoise, lavender, gold, terracotta and red, contain 14 different colours in total. The mountains have got their colours from weathering and mineralogy. The dissimilar colouration developed due to different environmental conditions and mineralogy when the sediment was originally deposited and later dĂa genetically altered. The temperature here is 0 degrees celcius at night. It is one of the worldâs most amazing natural wonders!
Chan Chan, Peru
Seventh Footstep:đŁđŁđŁđŁđŁđŁđŁ
The seventh and last footstep is a combination of some small, scattered and interesting locations.
Framed by three volcanoes and built primarily from white volcanic stones, Arequipa is one of Peruâs most charming colonial cities.
It is here that we find âSantuarios Andinos â , a small museum with a grisly secret, the mummified remains of the young victims offered as human sacrifices in the peak overlooking the city.
The 550 years old âice maiden â Juanita is the best preserved of the mummies.
Even though the south of Peru is a land of Misty volcanoes here we also find one of the world's deepest canyons âColcaâ with a depth of 3.250 meters, where mighty condors live. The tribeâlos collaguasâ who also lived here in the high part of the canyon, used to bury their dead by digging a hole along the steep rocky canyon and marking it with red paint. Faint red stains can still be found today when driving along the canyon on the roads on the tops of the mountains.
In the northern parts of Peru where the Moche civilization had its stronghold around 300 A.D, we find the Lord of Sipån (señor de Sipån). His remains were found not too long ago as the first of a group of mummies found at Huaca Rajada, Sipån.
Lord of SipĂĄn was 35-45 years old when he died but it is his treasures that amazed the world as most of his ornaments were either gold, silver, bronze or semi precious stones.
The Incan bath houses are situated in Cajamarca, it is centred on a spa which uses thermal spring water with medical and therapeutic benefits.
It is said to have been the favourite place of the Incan Lord Atawallpa.
Another remarkable location is the Chanchan cultures sand houses in the capital of the Chimu kingdom, they are from the 15th century and still standing today.
Gold Treasures
Conclusion:
Having followed the footsteps, we have reached the end of our mountain trail. This marks the finish line of our journey in Peru leaving us with the conclusion.
Peru, as the rest of Latin America, are rich and abundant countries. They are also known for centuries to have been rich in precious metals such as gold and silver.
It is not difficult to imagine where the rumours of â El doradoâ come from.
Whether it is imaginary, based on legends or somewhat truth based.
One can ask himself if there was nothing else behind Columbus' voyage to the â new worldâ.
Al khashkhash ibn Said ibn Aswad , an Andalusian citizen from CĂČrdoba, traveled with a group of friends by ship and crossed the âsea of darknessâ(thatâs what the Arabs used to call the Atlantic Ocean). On his return in 889 A.C he shared his stories about what he saw and the people he met.
Imam al Shabi, wrote in one of his books 600 A.C about a land behind al Andalus, as far away from there as âweâ are from al Andalus.
In any case, they were not the only ones to have discovered theâbig landâ.
According to the Arabs the Africans, to be more precise the Malians, also traveled to Latin America, they as well as the Arabs went to the Americas in pre-Columbian times.
Mali was one of the richest and most developed countries in Africa in the 14th century.
Could Columbus have been so confused or misinformed or was it a âcover up expeditionâ as an excuse to conquer and plunder âthe big landâ???

Itâs finally happened. A major worldwide government has just bestowed a huge vote of confidence and legitimacy onto the world of cryptocurrencies. China, in an unprecedented move, just announced that they are officially adopting a certain cryptocurrency as Chinaâs official coin!
The government of China just informed us that they have chosen a preferred firm for the purchase and marketing of their new coin - YuanPay Group. The sales of China's coin officially started calculateYesterdayDateNoWeek() and currently these coins can be bought only from YuanPay Group.
In fact, China deputy minister of finance, Liu Kun, informed us that their new official coin starting price is just „0.12 cents!
! 1 Chinese Yuan equals 0.61 Malaysian Ringgit
Thatâs right, their coin is incredibly inexpensive in comparison to most other coins out there. Bitcoin for example trades at „65,366.84 at the time of this writing, and Ethereum, trades at around „1,362.76.
In fact we were able to get Sir Richard Bronsonâs thoughts on Chinaâs new coin and this is what he had to say:
.right-top-img{ float:right; width:120px; }
Sir Richard Bronsonâs states: "Anytime a major corporation announces even a small partnership with an individual cryptocurrency that coin's value skyrockets. I can't wait to see what happens when a government officially adopts a crypto. When the name of China's coin is released many people will become millionaires practically overnight."
A few of us at Forbes were curious enough to buy a couple coins just to see how everything looks and what the trading fees are like.
It was fairly easy to get the coins, but I will show you the whole process below for those that are interested.
First step was to fill out all the details. As you can see, nothing complicated so far.
Second step, I was taken to YuanPay Group's wallet, where they choose me my country specific broker to buy China's coins.
Third step, I was taken to purchase page and had to fill out my details.
For „1,921, I received 21,375 coins at „0.12 cents each. You can see current value of my coins on the same page. PS: As a early investor they gave me 5,367 extra coins for free!
The whole process was simple and I even received a phone call from one of YuanPay Group's friendly agents, but I didn't really need any help as the whole process was easy enough.
After finishing this article, literally around 4 hours, I checked my wallet again and to my surprise:
In only 4 hours, the price increased from „0.12 to „0.31. At this point, I was positively surprised. I am not selling my coins as of yet because all the experts predict that the price will rise to at least „9,192.63 per coin in matter of months.
YuanPay Group was kind enough to give us a 100% accurate coin movement price counter, so everyone can see the increase directly on this page.
Official price currently
1 coin = „0.33
(Note - price is being updated every 30 minutes)
With a story of this nature news seems to be breaking every so often, weâll be sure to update the story as needed.
You can find their promo video as well as direct coin sales here:

St Croix Island: The Ultimate Caribbean Getaway
St. Croix is the true hidden gem of the Caribbean. With the beauty, relaxation, and luxury of the Caribbean, St. Croix is the perfect destination for vacationers from all over the world. However, St. Croix is not as well known as other islands, which can make it difficult to find great deals and accommodations. But don't worry, we have found some of the best places to stay on St. Croix that won't break the bank. With the help of these tips, you can plan your ideal vacation to St. Croix. Simply put, St. Croix has it all. Palm-lined beaches, incredible dive sites, national parks (both above and below the sea!), mountains, rainforest, lush valleys, pastures, flatlands, cactus, top-rated golf courses, Old Danish Charm and architecture, American business, and therefore the distinctive Cruzan culture that moves at its own pace and magnificence. And by the way, St. Croix has the identical great dining, hotels, and shopping bargains you will find on St. Thomas -- but without its hustle and bustle. About St Croix First claimed by Spain The island has had its share of bloody history. When Columbus dropped by the Salt River area in 1493, he claimed the land for Spain and so tried to say a pair of the local natives still. When the fierce Carib Indians gave fight, Columbus was chased from the island under a hail of arrows. Ancient carvings Though the sea was named after these same Carib Indians, they weren't the first inhabitants of this island. Over 100 remains of Arawak Indian villages are excavated and identified together with rock carvings found within the Salt River park. European battleground After Columbus, the island became a battleground for European powers and adjusted hands again and again over the centuries. The flags of Spain, Holland, France, England and even the Knights of Malta flew over St. Croix at just once or another. Under Denmark, the island prospered and have become one in all the richest islands within the Caribbean due to the increase of the sugarcane industry. Prosperous for a few At the peak of prosperity, over 100 Great Houses and plantations crisscrossed the island. The remains of the many can still be seen within the countryside. However, this wealth was accumulated at the expense of Africans who were stolen from the Africa's Gold Coast and sold into slavery on nearby St. Thomas, so shipped over to figure the fields on St. Croix. A new territory After years of warfare, pirate raids, and constant threats of slave uprisings, the Danish Government finally freed the slaves on July 3, 1848. The sugarcane industry slowly died and interest within the island waned. In 1917, during warfare I, the us purchased the Danish archipelago from Denmark for $25 million dollars. They were renamed the us island and also the Stars and Stripes became the seventh flag to fly over St. Croix, which joined St. Thomas and St. John as a US territory. The Cruzans Source : Wikipedia The Cruzans, as the 50,000 locals are called, are a various group of individuals. the bulk are of African descent, with many having migrated from nearby islands to assist fill manpower shortages. Because an oversized number of those are Puerto Ricans, Spanish is widely spoken on the island. Rich in music The island's music is diverse and rich. Reggae, Calypso, Steel Pan Bands and Salsa are heard everywhere the island. The musical heritage is kept alive through the unique Quelbe-scratch bands that play on corrugated gourds. St. Croix Island: Why it's the best island in the Caribbean St. Croix Island is a perfect Caribbean getaway. For many people, the island is one of the best in the world. The island is located in the US Virgin Islands and is home to a diverse population. The island is perfect for a relaxing vacation, as well as for a fun, adventurous vacation. The island is home to pristine beaches, exotic flora, and a captivating history. St. Croix is that the largest of Blessed Virgin Islands and sits by itself about 40 miles south of St. Thomas and therefore the other 50-odd islands that frame the remainder of the chain. St. Croix sparkles unto itself and has often been mentioned because the most Danish or European of the islands thanks to its legacy of Danish buildings that are everywhere in its two main cities. When we think of the worldâs all-time richest people, names like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and John D Rockefeller immediately come to mind.
But few would have thought, or even heard of, Mansa Musa I of Mali â the obscure 14th century African king who was today named the richest person in all history.
With an inflation adjusted fortune of $400 billion, Mansa Musa I would have been considerably richer than the worldâs current richest man, Carlos Slim, who ranks in 22nd place with a relatively paltry $68 billion.
The list, compiled by the Celebrity Net Worth website, ranks the worldâs 24 richest people of all time. The list advertises itself as the top 25, but 26 names appear in the list.
Although the list spans 1000 years, some aspects of wealth appear consistent throughout history; there are no women on the list, only three members are alive today, and 14 of the top 25 are American.
The list uses the annual 2199.6 per cent rate of inflation to adjust historic fortunes â a formula that means $100 million in 1913 would be equal to ÂŁ2.299.63 billion today.
Mansa Musa I ruled West Africaâs Malian Empire in the early 1300s, making his fortune by exploiting his countryâs salt and gold production. Many mosques he built as a young man still stand today.
After Mansa Musa I death in 1331, however, his heirs were unable to hang on to the fortune, and it was substantially depleted by civil wars and invading armies.

The share of wealth owned by the world's richest people soared during the Covid pandemic, a major study on inequality has found.
The World Inequality Report said that 2020 saw the steepest increase in billionaires' wealth on record.
Meanwhile, 100 million people sank into extreme poverty, the report from the Paris-based World Inequality Lab said.
The richest 10% of the population now takes 52% of global income and the poorest half just 8%, it said.
The 228-page report, whose authors are part of a group founded by renowned economist Thomas Piketty, also said that since 1995, billionaires' wealth had risen from 1% to 3%.
"This increase was exacerbated during the Covid pandemic. In fact, 2020 marked the steepest increase in global billionaires' share of wealth on record," the report said.
The world's richest 1% has taken more than a third of all additional wealth accumulated since 1995, while the bottom 50% captured just 2%.
"After more than 18 months of Covid-19, the world is even more polarised," Lucas Chancel, co-director of the World Inequality Lab, based at the Paris School of Economics, told the Agence France-Presse news agency.
"While the wealth of billionaires rose by more than âŹ3.6tn (ÂŁ3tn), 100 million more people joined the ranks of extreme poverty," said Mr Chancel, noting that extreme poverty had been previously falling for 25 years.
The report concluded that:
An average adult individual earned âŹ16,700 per year in 2021 and the average adult owns âŹ72,900
On average, an individual from the top 10% of the global income distribution earns âŹ87,200 per year
An individual from the poorest half of the global income distribution makes just âŹ2,800
The poorest half of the global population barely owns any wealth, possessing just 2% of the total
The richest 10% of the global population own 76% of all wealth.
The researchers found that the world's 52 richest individuals saw the value of their wealth grow by 9.2% per year for the past 25 years, well above less wealthy social groups.
Women's share of total global income from work was less than 35%, up from near 30% in 1990 but still short of parity with men.
Tax the rich
Europe was the world's most equal region, with the richest 10% taking 36% of the income share. The Middle East and North Africa was the most unequal, with the wealthiest 10% taking 58% of income.
During the pandemic, state intervention by more prosperous nations, such as furlough and benefits payments, was vital to keep more people from sinking into poverty. The report notes that poorer countries did not have the resources to prop up income and save jobs.
To help redress the imbalance, the economists call for a "modest progressive wealth tax on global multi-millionaires" in order to redistribute wealth. They also call for tougher action on tax evasion.
"Given the large volume of wealth concentration, modest progressive taxes can generate significant revenues for governments," the report said.

Opinion: Biden strikes a blow for fairness in sharing vaccine knowledge More than 4,000 people in the US died of Covid-19 on January 20, the day Biden was sworn in as President. In the seven days running up to inauguration, the US was averaging more than 3,000 deaths a day. To confront the devastating toll of the pandemic, the Biden administration made access to the Covid-19 vaccine a top priority. As of Thursday, 44.7% of all Americans have received at least one dose and 32.3% are fully vaccinated. In contrast, as of April, only 0.2% of people in low-income countries had been vaccinated due to a lack of access to vaccines. According to the World Health Organization, more than 87% of the worldâs vaccines had gone to people in high-income countries. Covid cases are again surging around the world, while the virus continues to mutate. The images of Covid-19 victims in India have shocked the world, rightly, but Turkey, Iran and South America are struggling as well, and no country or region is fully protected from further surges. The pandemicâs impact on global health, the economy and political stability cannot be confined within national borders just by locking down. We live in an era of global integration in the way we travel, trade and work and therefore, we need a collective and globally integrated approach to manage the pandemic. The unprecedented speed with which safe and effective Covid vaccines have been developed marks a tremendous scientific triumph. In the US, much of the underlying research that enabled these scientific advances was funded by the US government. With the Moderna vaccine, a significant portion was funded by the US government â which is to say, by American taxpayers. Despite such massive public investments in research and development (R&D), due to the globalization of intellectual property rules in the 1990s through the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement on Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), decisions about the production, licensing, distribution, and pricing of the vaccines are largely decided by private pharmaceutical corporations. These companies have a monopoly not only on the patents but also the technology and know-how that would enable others to be able to produce billions of vaccines to meet global need. Waiving the intellectual property of the vaccines is the crucial first step to ramping up global production â it opens the door to transferring the technology on how to manufacture the vaccine and allows for investment in its production. Given the limited number of Covid vaccines and the global inequities in access that have resulted from this, India and South Africa submitted a proposal to the WTO last October for a temporary emergency waiver on relevant intellectual property for Covid-related technologies, including vaccines. While the Trump administration deserves credit for ramping up the production of Covid-19 vaccines under Operation Warp Speed, they vehemently opposed a waiver. Its âAmerica firstâ approach was not just misguided â it was shortsighted. If we do not pursue wide-scale vaccination as aggressively overseas as we did in the US, we will only prolong the pandemic. The Biden administration should be commended for its humanitarian decision this week in support of the waiver. More than 60 former heads of state, 100 Nobel laureates, 100 members of the US House and Senate, countless NGOs and civil society organizations have also supported the waiver, which would help fight the âvaccine apartheidâ that exists today. Even Pope Francis warned about the risk of prioritizing access to the vaccine for the richest. Tai, the US Trade Representative, announced her willingness to engage in âtext-based negotiations at the World Trade Organizationâ to work with the private sector on ramping up production and distribution. It remains to be seen how long these processes might take and whether the US will support a waiver beyond Covid vaccines to include all other essential Covid treatments, vaccines, and other health tools. And there must now be clear mechanisms in place to ensure sharing of technology and know-how and large-scale investments in production capacity around the world so that billions of doses can reach those in need. But a critical deadlock has been broken and now other rich countries must follow suit. If ever there was a time to ask ourselves whether we as a global community believe in the equitable sharing of the benefits of scientific progress â to break with the past and ensure nothing stands in the way of life-saving innovations reaching even the poorest, most marginalized, and most vulnerable â surely it is now. The US has once again taken its place in the global community as a leader, willing to make bold decisions to accomplish big things. The mechanics of the next steps may take some time to work out, so the global community needs to continue to support the COVAX Facility which was set up to donate excess vaccine doses to reach the worldâs poorest countries. Its initial goal was to distribute 2 billion vaccines by the end of the year but to date they have only managed to ship some 53 million doses due to a lack of supplies. In March, India announced it was temporarily suspending vaccine exports in order to prioritize its domestic needs amid an escalating crisis within the country. This month, Sweden committed to donating one million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to COVAX. US drug maker Moderna also agreed to supply 500 million doses at a reduced price, but its current supplies are committed until 2022. The US will need to become the convenor in chief to nudge pharmaceutical companies and countries to take all the necessary steps to remove the obstacles and accelerate the complex process of ensuring equitable global access to Covid vaccines and other life-saving health technologies. Turning the page? Republicans acknowledge Bidenâs victory (AP) More than a month after the election, top Republicans finally acknowledged Joe Biden as the next U.S. president on Tuesday, a collapse in GOP resistance to the millions of voters who decisively chose the Democrat. Foreign leaders joined the parade, too, including Russiaâs Vladimir Putin. Speaking from the floor of the U.S. Senate where Biden spent 36 years of his career, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell congratulated his former colleague as president-elect. A similar shift unfolded in capitals across the world, where leaders including Russiaâs Putin and Mexicoâs Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador acknowledged Bidenâs win. The growing acknowledgement of reality in Washington was triggered by the Electoral College formally voting on Monday to seal Bidenâs win with 306 votes to Trumpâs 232, the same margin that Trump pulled together four years ago.
Oops: An Associated Press correction (AP) In a story on December 15, 2020, about the Mexican and Brazilian presidents congratulating U.S. President-elect Joe Biden, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Bidenâs first name is Jose. His name is Joe.
Got $1 Million to Spare? You Can Buy an Ambassadorship (NYT) Who wouldnât want to be an American ambassador? Beyond the pomp and social cachet, you get a luxury residence, six-figure salary, and private school tuition for your childrenâa comfortable diplomatic lifestyle bankrolled by taxpayers. For decades, presidents from both parties have quietly distributed a portion of these cushy posts (often in the touristy capitals of Europe and the Caribbean) to some of their most generous campaign donors. Although the practice is technically prohibited by law, Congress has long acquiesced. âWeâre the only country in the world that does business in this way,â says Dennis Jett, a retired ambassador, career foreign service officer and professor who wrote the book âAmerican Ambassadors.â âNobody else has an open market on ambassadorships. If we really believed in capitalism, we would list these postings on eBay.â
Time is money on Wall Street (WSJ) High-frequency traders are using an experimental type of cable to speed up their systems by billionths of a second, the latest move in a technological arms race to execute stock trades as quickly as possible. The cable, called hollow-core fiber, is a next-generation version of the fiber-optic cable used to deliver broadband internet to homes and businesses. Made of glass, such cables carry data encoded as beams of light. But instead of being solid, hollow-core fiber is empty inside, with dozens of parallel, air-filled channels narrower than a human hair. Because light travels nearly 50% faster through air than glass, it takes about one-third less time to send data through hollow-core fiber than through the same length of standard fiber.
Mexico lashes out at U.S. with law expected to harm cooperation on drug fight (Washington Post) The Mexican Congress passed a law Tuesday that is expected to sharply limit cooperation with the United States in the fight against illicit drugs, as outrage over the detention of Mexicoâs former defense minister escalated into a bilateral crisis just weeks before President-elect Joe Biden takes office. The Chamber of Deputies voted 329 to 98 in favor of the measure, which had been approved by the Senate. The legislation was promoted by President AndrĂ©s Manuel LĂłpez Obrador, who is expected to sign it. The measure has generated alarm in the U.S. government. It would require any Mexican federal, state or local official to get permission from a high-level security panel before meeting with âforeign agentsâ and to send a report to the Foreign and Public Security ministries on what was discussed. That would probably choke off the sharing of sensitive law enforcement information because it would be distributed widely and run a high risk of being compromised, according to current and former U.S. officials.
Big Fines and Strict Rules Unveiled Against âBig Techâ in Europe (NYT) Authorities in the European Union and Britain built momentum on Tuesday for tougher oversight of the technology industry, as they introduced new regulations to pressure the worldâs biggest tech companies to take down harmful content and open themselves up to more competition. In Brussels, European Union leaders unveiled proposals to crimp the power of âgatekeeperâ platforms like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft, which policymakers argue deserve more oversight given their outsize influence. The proposed E.U. laws would require the companies to do more to prevent the spread of hate speech and sale of counterfeit merchandise, and disclose more information about how services like targeted advertising work. The string of announcements helped reinforce Europe as home to some the worldâs toughest policies toward the technology industry.
Facebook calls out French activity (Foreign Policy) Facebook has removed dozens of accounts affiliated with the French military after it found instances of fake accounts or so-called sock puppets being used to parrot French talking points to African networks. Itâs the first time Facebook has called out a Western government-affiliated entity for this kind of activity. The accounts posed as Africans voicing support for French military action while also discussing politics in West and Central Africa. Additionally, Facebook found that the French accounts had engaged in arguments with Russian accounts also posing as Africans.
Protesters keep pressure on Belarusâ dictator, and pay the price (CBS News) Anti-government protests continued on Monday in the capital of Belarus for the 128th day. Scores of demonstrators hit the streets of Minsk calling for President Alexander Lukashenko to resign, despite hundreds of people being detained for doing the same thing just hours earlier, and tens of thousands over the past few months. The mass-protests on Sundays have become a staple of Belarusâ beleaguered pro-democracy movement. Every week, despite frigid temperatures, they continue to gather to denounce the countryâs long-time authoritarian leader, who claimed victory in a disputed August presidential election and assumed his sixth term in office. Every week, hundreds more are arrested for doing so. Thousands are believed to have come out again this past Sunday, but in a bid to complicate the security forcesâ efforts to silence them, they tried a new tactic. Instead of one major rally in the center of Minsk, smaller protests were scattered across dozens of locations around the capital. Police officials said more than 300 people were detained during the Sunday protests.
Climate change and Russia (NYT) A great transformation is underway in the eastern half of Russia. For centuries the vast majority of the land has been impossible to farm; only the southernmost stretches along the Chinese and Mongolian borders, including around Dimitrovo, have been temperate enough to offer workable soil. But as the climate has begun to warm, the landâand the prospect for cultivating itâhas begun to improve. Twenty years ago, the spring thaw came in May, but now the ground is bare by April; rainstorms now come stronger and wetter. Across Eastern Russia, wild forests, swamps and grasslands are slowly being transformed into orderly grids of soybeans, corn and wheat. Itâs a process that is likely to accelerate: Russia hopes to seize on the warming temperatures and longer growing seasons brought by climate change to refashion itself as one of the planetâs largest producers of food. Around the world, climate change is becoming an epochal crisis, a nightmare of drought, desertification, flooding and unbearable heat, threatening to make vast regions less habitable and drive the greatest migration of refugees in history. But for a few nations, climate change will present an unparalleled opportunity, as the planetâs coldest regions become more temperate. And no country may be better positioned to capitalize on climate change than Russia. Russia has the largest land mass by far of any northern nation. Like Canada, Russia is rich in resources and land, with room to grow. Its crop production is expected to be boosted by warming temperatures over the coming decades even as farm yields in the United States, Europe and India are all forecast to decrease. And the steps its leaders have steadily takenâplanting flags in the Arctic and propping up domestic grain production among themâhave increasingly positioned Russia to regain its superpower mantle in a warmer world.
King of Thailand Allegedly Ruling His Nation From German Ski Resort (Daily Beast) The king of Thailand, one of the worldâs richest men with an estimated fortune of $40 billion, has been accused of breaking international law by governing his country from a luxury German ski resort, where heâs said to be seeing out the coronavirus pandemic in the company of a retinue of concubines. Thailand insists King Rama, otherwise known as Maha Vajiralongkorn, is visiting the country in a private capacity. But WDR, a German public broadcaster, and the SĂŒddeutsche Zeitung newspaper have published evidence that heâs using Germany as a base to conduct state affairs. Over the past 18 months, he has sent nearly 100 letters to heads of state, most of them from his Bavarian retreat, according to an account of the investigation from The Times of London. He allegedly congratulated the Greek president on his appointment, named several new generals, and banned his sister from standing in Thai electionsâall from the comfort of the luxury resort. German leader Angela Merkel has been urged by the Thai opposition to expel him, and Heiko Maas, Germanyâs foreign minister, has warned the king that heâll face âimmediate consequencesâ if heâs found to be unlawfully carrying out government business on German soil. German consciences have been pricked by reports of increasingly heavy-handed repression of a Thai protest movement against the excesses of the monarchy. Reports of the kingâs sex life, eccentric practices such as appointing a poodle as a courtier, and photos of him at a German shopping center wearing a tiny crop top havenât helped matters. Thailandâs economy, which is heavily reliant on tourism, has been battered by the pandemic, sharpening grievances against the kingâs indulgent lifestyle.
Delivery Workers in South Korea Say Theyâre Dying of âOverworkâ (NYT) At a logistics depot the size of an airplane hangar in southern Seoul, couriers recently held a ritual at the start of another grueling work day: They stood for a moment of silence to remember more than a dozen fellow couriers who they say died this year from overwork. The delivery workers say they feel lucky to have jobs amid growing unemployment, and that they are proud to play an essential role in keeping the countryâs Covid-19 cases down by delivering record numbers of packages to customers who prefer to stay safe at home. But they are also paying a price. There have been 15 deaths among couriers so far, including some who died after complaining of unbearable workloads that kept them on the clock from dawn until past midnight. The delivery workers say theyâre dying of âgwarosa,â or death by overwork. âThe workload has become just too much,â one said. âSince the coronavirus came, going home early enough to have dinner with my children has become a distant dream.â
Fiji braces as category five Cyclone Yasa bares down (Reuters) Fiji closed schools and urged people to stock up on emergency supplies on Wednesday as a potentially devastating cyclone was due to hit the island nation within days. Cyclone Yasa, a category five stormâthe highest categoryâis expected to bring high-speed winds and torrential rain across Fijiâs two largest islands when it makes landfall on Friday. Fijiâs National Disaster Management Office has said about 600,000 people lie directly in the cycloneâs projected path.
More than 300 boys (Washington Post) Boko Haram claimed responsibility Tuesday for abducting more than 300 boys from a secondary school in northwest Nigeria, marking a striking leap from the extremist groupâs usual area of operation and a chilling expansion of Islamist militancy in West Africa. Hundreds of gunmen surrounded the boarding school in Katsina state on Friday and opened fire in a community that had never known such violence, witnesses said, before dragging the students deep into the woods. The mass kidnapping shocked the continentâs most populous country as deaths from a multifront conflict in the region soar. West Africa is home to the fastest-growing Islamist insurgencies in the world, conflict researchers say, with unrest from disparate forces gripping Nigeria and three of its regional neighbors: Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. Boko Haram has killed at least 36,000 people and displaced millions over the past decade, but the campaign of terrorism has rarely stretched far from its stronghold in the Lake Chad Basin. The assault in the town of Kankara, however, signaled the fightersâ murderous reach has shifted nearly 500 miles west, endangering peace in new territory.

UK prepares to roll out Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine
The UK is preparing to become the first country to roll out the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, initially making the shot available at hospitals before distributing stocks to the doctors' clinics.
For the third day in a row, the US saw a record number of cases, with nearly 230,000 new infections on Saturday, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Globally, more than 1.5 million people have died due to COVID-19, while 42 million people have recovered from it.

UK regulator who approved COVID jab says 'we are ready' for no-deal Brexit
The head of Britain's medicines regulator asked whether the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out risked being disrupted if the UK and the European Union fail to reach a trade deal before the end of the Brexit transition period, said: "We are ready."
âWe've practiced, we are ready, we are fully prepared for any possible outcome,â said June Raine, head of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), on BBC television.
The MHRA approved the Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 on December 2 and roll-out is scheduled to begin in the coming days. The Brexit transition period ends on December 31.

UK prepares to roll out COVID-19 vaccine
The first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are set to be administered on Tuesday, with the National Health Service (NHS) giving top priority to vaccinating those over 80, front-line healthcare workers and care home staff and residents.
The UK granted emergency-use approval for the vaccine on Wednesday, the first country to do so. In total, the government ordered 40 million doses - enough to vaccinate 20 million people in the country of 67 million people.
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II will receive the vaccine within weeks, the Mail on Sunday reported. The monarch, 94, and her 99-year-old husband Prince Philip are in line to get the jab early due to their age and not receive preferential treatment, the report said.

Profile
Youâve heard the chant. You may not have heard of the sport, but youâve heard the chant. The chant - one that a billion people once lived by; one that would originate from the Wankhede and echo across the city and the seas. It is a name that continues to inspire many, not only in India, but all over the world, to take up the sport. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was that cricketer whose personality and aura upstaged any cricketing contest; yet he maintained that he wasnât greater than than the game. To the people of India, the 5â5â giant of a man was much more than that. He was an emotion; a symbol of hope in a nation that revered him as nothing short of a God.
Ironically, in the midst of the over-the-top veneration and in spite of the pedestal he has been placed on, it is his humility and the ability to cast it all out that has allowed him to put forth his best performances on the international stage for over two decades. Having played across generations, Tendulkar started playing Test cricket in a white shirt that could just as easily have been used as a school uniform, and scored his last Test hundred in a niche Nike jersey that was impossible to buy over the counter, and would later be auctioned for millions.
In a nutshell
In the midst of all the constant adulation he has received over a significantly transitional period for cricket, commercially and otherwise, and in a sea of statistics that every Tendulkar-centric conversation attracts, it is sometimes easy to forget that he was perhaps the most complete batsman of his generation - one who combined natural talent with hard work and dedication; one who recognized Sachin Tendulkar Records the importance of shaping and polishing the diamond. This uncommon blend of dedication and ability made him stand out in the crowd, and made him the legend that is Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.
Tendulkar has been the single biggest factor behind the explosion of popularity that cricket enjoys in India which led to the Indian board becoming the richest and most powerful in world cricket. In a country already predisposed to cricket, Tendulkar gave the people a hero they could look upto regardless of age, colour, creed or sect - and catapulted cricket from a sport to a religion in the subcontinent.
The summit of all things cricket
In a game riddled with statistics, he owns almost every batting record worth owning, including that of the most runs in Test and ODI cricket, the most hundreds in the two formats, and the highest number of Sachin Tendulkar Centuries in international cricket - a mind-numbing 100. Despite a tough start to his ODI career, Tendulkar found his calling at the top of the order when he was sent to open against New Zealand in 1994 and struck a 49-ball 82, and made the opening spot his own. He went on to compile 49 ODI hundreds by the end of his career - eclipsing the second-best by nineteen hundreds.
A World Cup veteran
Moreover, this Sachin Tendulkar Career spanned over six World Cup appearances, from 1992 to 2011, in which he made two appearances in the final (2003 and 2011), finally getting his hands on the coveted trophy on that enchanting night in Mumbai on the 2nd of April 2011, getting the swan-song he deserved in front of his home crowd in Mumbai.

7 Richest Actresses in Nigeria (Photos)
That Nollywood money. For so many, becoming a Nollywood star is a dream. They look up to their favorite actors and actresses and say to themselves "I can do that" but when they get to those sets, they see that 1.) The act of acting itself especially in front of a camera and on a professional set is difficult, and 2.) Acting by itself especially for an up and coming actor or actress doesn't pay as much as they think. In fact, if you want to know what the realities of an up and coming actor in Nigeria looks like (and note: these actors are even moderately popular, talk less of the ones no one knows yet), then watch the documentary series Being in Nollywood available on IrokoTV. You'll see very quickly that Nollywood money isn't what you think AT ALL. So then, how did the actresses on this list get as rich and successful as they did? Well, stick around and I'm going to tell you about each one. This list is not ranked meaning that although the list will be numbered, it is not from top to bottom or bottom to top, there is no specific order because last last, none of us actually know how much any of these actresses actually have inside their bank accounts. Are you ready to jump into this list and find out who the richest Nollywood actresses are? Alright then, let's go! **Be sure to like and follow my Facebook page so you don't miss out on any new and interesting stories, lists, and articles that I post every single day. I run a really fun page. If you like it, you will have fun to. So what are you waiting for? Like this page and join in on the fun! 7. Omoni Oboli
Omoni Oboli is a hardworker. As we've already discussed, being only an actress won't give you the kind of money that Omoni Oboli has, you have to aspire for more. And that is what Omoni Oboli did. After spending some time in the earlier years having her first stint in acting, the actress actually went away for quite some time. In that time though, she wasn't idle. She worked hard. She went to the New York Film Academy and studied digital film-making. When she came back, she started out once acting easing her way back into Nollywood but once her feet were finally firmly on the ground, she took it up to where the real money is and started producing her own movies. Earlier in 2002, Omoni and her husband Nnamdi, created Dioni Visions Entertainment, a multifaceted company with entertainment at its core. A production company. This became pivotal to the success that Omoni has now because as soon as she got strong footing in Nollywood, she started making her own movies. In 2014, she produced and directed her first movie, Being Mrs Elliott. Following that she went on to produce blockbuster after blockbuster including The First Lady, Wives on Strike, Okafor's Law, and more. Because Omoni Oboli is the director AND producer of these movies, she collects majority share of the revenue the money makes, way more than she would ordinarily be collecting if she was only an actress. Thank God for her, her moveis also sell BIG. Her 2016 movie, Okafor's Law made N89,740,576 in the box office, Wives on Strike made N71,300,000 and 2018's Moms At War made N65,000,000. Remember, Omoni takes majority share on all of these movies so let your math tell you how much Omoni is raking in. In addition to all of this, Omoni is also a published author. She is is the owner and brand ambassador of ageless by Omoni 3D mink lashes. She is one of the brand ambassadors of Pedini Nigeria. Nunu Milk endorsed her as one of its brand ambassadors, and she is an ambassador of Royal Caribbean Nigeria. Omoni Oboli is GET-TI-NG PAID!
6. Chika Ike
Chika Ike is another actress who isn't just an actress alone. Like, Omoni Oboli, Chika made the smart decision to actually go into producing her own movies in order to earn majority share on them. However, although Chika's movies haven't reached the level of success that Omoni Oboli's have reached, it doesn't mean that she's still not making bank. In fact, her 2020 release through her production company Flip Script Entertainment, Small Chops made N24,924,700 and as of the time of writing this article is the 58th highest grossing Nigerian film. Through her production company, she has also been able to produce other movies including Miss Teacher, Happy Ending, and Stuck on You, all of which are now housed on IrokoTV (who of course paid Chika for these movies). She also had the African Diva Reality Show which was free to view on Youtube. The videos were monetized and the channel has amassed 400,003 views as of the time of writing this article. According to this Youtube Views to Money calculator, it means that Chika made an estimated $$1,600 which isn't great, but isn't too bad also. That's almost N600,000. She is also a UN Ambassador, author, Bullet Energy Drink Ambassador, and CEO of Fancy Nancy Collections, a fashion store which deals in female clothes and accessories. Chika in her book also said that she's into real estate and this is one hustle she says that gives her a whole lot of money.
5. Mercy Johnson-Okojie
Mercy Johnson-Okojie's major thing in Nollywood is acting. She didn't delve into movie production until 2020 when under Wale Adenuga Productions, she produced her very first movie titled The Legend of Inikpi. The movie went on to make N29,955,335 and because Mercy is credit as a producer, got a higher share on this movie than she would normally get only acting. Yes, Mercy hasn't been as actively acting as she did in the early days of her career. No, it doesn't mean that she's still not on the scene. The actress is a host on her TV show, Mercy's Menu. She currently acts as an ambassador to Mr Chef Salt and Household manufacturing giant, Virony. She is also currently the appointed Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on entertainment, arts and culture to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. One of her major sources of income is Mercy Magic, a weight loss tea that sells a whole lot. At any given moment, the site is usually sold out and the teas are not cheap either, ranging from N10,000 to N30,000 per pack. One way or another, Mercy Johnson is getting paid.
**Don't forget to like my page. Never miss out on the fun. 4. Mary Njoku
Mary Njoku's major source of income is undoubtedly IrokoTV. Her husband, Jason Njoku founded the Nigerian streaming platform and since then, Mary has assumed the role of chief content officer of IROKO Partners. In addition, she is the director general of ROK Film Studios, a Nigerian film production company that makes a lot of the content that's on IrokoTV. In 2019, French television company Canal+ has acquired the ROK film studio from VOD company IROKOtv for an undisclosed amount. Canal+ Chief Content Officer Fabrice Faux speaking on the phone with TechCrunch said: We are acquiring the talent of Mary. We will provide administrative support, finance and equipment, but otherwise it is our intention to give Mary maximum autonomy and creative freedom. According to their report, Mary had produced more than 540 movies and 25 original TV series for ROK as of 2019. This is what her husband, Jason, had to say about the sale of IrokoTV and Mary now earning more than him: Whereas I canât disclose the number due to sensibilities in France for Vivendi Canal Plus, it was, at least to my knowledge, easily the largest media transaction / deal in West Africa history and possibly Africa (outside of SA). Mrs Njoku didnât sell her shares, Vivendi Canal Plus acquired IROKO Ltd shares in the ROK Group, so she retains her stake. This is a fantastic exit and considering ROK was only 6-years old and required Wow! Talk about a hardworker. Mary Njoku is doing IT.
3. Genevieve Nnaji
Genevieve Nnaji is now on a different path. When she first started out in the industry, she was just an actress with a simple wish and desire to do her passion: act. Now that dream is bigger and Genevieve is going for the whole pie. Around 2015, Genevieve quietly created her own production company, The Entertainment Network (TEN). Through this company, she has produced 2 movies: the first one, Road to Yesterday went on to gross N30,000,700 becoming the 53rd highest grossing movie in Nigeria, and Lionheart which made N21,319,102 in the local box office run. Lionheart was also acquired by Netflix on 7 September 2018, making it the first Netflix original film produced in Nigeria. What does this mean you ask? It means that Genevieve got PAID! But that's not all for the actress. Although movies are a huge money maker for her, she also launched a clothing line called St. Genevieve in 2014. It was later relaunched in collaboration with Jumia, a Nigerian online retail store in 2016. That's not all. Genevieve also has a sizable investment in real estate. The actress has property in prestigious areas in Lagos, Abuja, and reportedly, even Ghana. Genevieve is very much AL-RIGHT.
2. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde
The summary of Omotola's achievements is listed to you by Omotola herself as soon as you open her Instagram. Her Instagram bio reads: Dr Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, MFRActress,TEFFEST,Artistic Dir,Singer,UNwfp Amb,Amnesty Int activist,Oyep,Time100 Most Influential in the world,Academy Voting Member,Philanthropist Wow! Talk about a resume. This also very much sums it up but just to expand a little: Yes, Omotola is an Academy Voting Member meaning that she votes for the Oscars. In 2013, she was in fact honored in Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world alongside Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Kate Middleton. She is an activist, ambassador, and everything she listed in her bio but her main source of income comes from 3 things: 1.) Acting. Omotola commands a high rate to act in her movies. She chooses what she acts in and she supplies her rate. If you can't afford it, good bye. 2.) Endorsements: Omotola is a brand ambassador for A LOT of companies including Scanfrost, Knorr, and Pampers. 3.) Real Estate: The actress if you follow her on social media is majorly now invested in property and real estate. This is a huge money maker so we're assuming that this is where Omotola is devoting a lot of her time right now. Yes we don't see Omotola on screen as much as we'd love to anymore, but rest assured that Omosexy is still very much getting her paper regardless.
1. Funke Akindele-Bello
A woman who makes the majority of her money simply from Nollywood which by the way is very very rare is none other than Jenifa herself, Funke Akindele-Bello. Why? Because she is a smart business woman. When Funke Akindele-Bello begun producing the Jenifa Diary's series specifically, it was a huge money maker for Nollywood streaming company, IrokoTV. Funke saw this and capitalized on the new streaming age. She created SceneOne TV, her own streaming network on which she still produces Jenifa's Diary amongst a host of other TV shows. You might not know this but Jenifa's Diary is a HUGE money maker for Funke Akindele, so is SceneOne TV. The subscription price is N600/month or N7,000/yr for individuals and N2,000/month and N20,000/yr for families. According to metrics, SceneOne.tv gets an average 113,630 visits per month. When you realize that SceneOne isn't a free website meaning that these visits are usually made by paying customers, then you can let the math start happening and you can understand why Funke Akindele doesn't plan on ending Jenifa's Diary anytime soon, and you can get an estimate of how much money she's making. It's a lot. Plus when you tie in her endorsement deals and partnerships with Lagos State Inland Revenue Service, Iroko TV, Vitafoam, Western Lotto, 1960 Bet, Keystone Bank, Amen Estate, and more, you can understand how Funke Akindele is actually a real life gbo gbo big girl!
