Going through the Before Crisis scripts, I came across a fact that I hadnât recalled from when I last dabbled in the game, and it struck me as such an incredible thing that I needed to bring it up.
...because apparently Reeve and Veld... âgo way back.â
Now. Let me take a moment to elaborate the interest I have in this casually dropped fact during Episode 20 of BC.
At the beginning of Before Crisis, six years prior to the start of Final Fantasy VII, Reeve is not yet the Executive of the Department of Urban Development. According to information garnered from the sadly lost site, Gunshot Romance, Reeve--at the beginning of Before Crisis (around 0001/2/30 in the timeline)--is considered a âRepresentative of the Dept. of Urban Developmentâ. By the time we move forward to the events in Episode 20, almost six full years have passed (Episode 20 is dated around 0007/2/10) and Reeve is now considered an executive of the company, having moved up to the highest position in his department as seen in the below excerpt from Episode 20:
Tseng Rosalind. The man we were discussing has left for the contact point.
Player The Head of Urban Development's Reeve, right? I wonder if he'll really cooperate with us.
Tseng That's what Veld said. We'll have to trust him.
We have further proof of Reeveâs promotion and climb through the ranks with this fascinating conversation between Tseng, the Player Turk (in this case, Gun), and Reeve as they discuss the Turksâ next move. Of particular interest are the translation notes provided by Gunshot Romanceâs creator, Dark_Angel, excerpted here along with the part of the script:
Tseng We'll have to get there without being spotted by the army. How are weâŠ
Reeve If you go by submarine from Junon, you shouldn't have too many problems.
Tseng But the submarines are overseen by the army.
Player We want to go without them noticing us.
Reeve You don't have to worry about that. If you sneak on board, by the time you're out of the harbour it'll be too late for them to do a thing. Say you're acting on my orders. I'll take responsibility for everything. (*)
Episode 20 Translation Note (*) This takes a bit of thinking. Currently the Turks' position stands thus: As long as Rufus remains in the possession of the Turks, President Shinra can't do anything to them, although he, through Scarlet, is doing everything in his power to find the Turks' base and wrest the young Vice President from their grasp. The Turks' position is ambiguous. They aren't the outright enemies of the company, but they are no longer part of the company ranks. Of course, not everybody in the company knows about Tseng and company's "betrayal". Shin-Ra is a huge company. While some of the army will know about the hunt for the Turks, others won't. Reeve is implying that the army stationed in Junon won't know anything about the Turks' defection and if someone catches them in the act of appropriating a sub, they can just say that they're working on Reeve's orders. In addition, making a company-wide general announcement about the Turks defection is something President Shinra probably wants to avoid as far as possible, as the news would hardly reflect well on him and creates a possible security breach as well. As for the question of Reeve getting found out, he's hedging his bets on his position. He's a Shin-Ra executive. If the Turks, supposedly acting in his name, tell the soldiers not to say a word, they won't. If you were a lowly grunt whose livelihood depended on keeping the upper brass happy, would you go and flout an order given to you, even by proxy, by a top company executive? No, I didn't think so.
Dark_Angelâs thoughts on the matter are not only an interesting look into the perspective of whatâs going on in the events of the game itself, but into Reeveâs dynamic personality. The Characters section of the late Gunshot Romance site hosted a similarly themed description for Reeve with much the same complex insight into his personality and what drives him:
Reeve Tuesti (ăȘăŒăă»ăă„ăšăčăăŁ) The future head of Shin-Ra's Urban Development Department, Reeve is a serious young man with a reputation for being perhaps the most level-headed and down to earth member of the company's executives. Passionate and dedicated to his job, he has invested a lot in the building and design of Midgar; from what we can see in the original game, he continues to be actively involved in the maintenance of the city. Reeve also has an interest in robotics, and has spent some time on the design and programming of Cait Sith. In Episode 20, we see the initial fruits of his efforts when he uses Cait to guide your player Turk on a mission in the Gongaga woods. The question of his allegiance to the company â more specifically, to President Shinra, has come into question. He assists the Turks with their mission, despite the fact that they are being hunted by the Shin-Ra Company. Not only does he give them valuable information, he also provides them with a cover so they can get to Junon to look for the special summon materia. What becomes evident through these actions is that Reeve's is not a question of weak allegiance, but a strong commitment to what he believes is right; where that justice can be found is irrelevant in the larger picture. This trait is no less diminished when he founds and heads the World Regenesis Organization in DC.
While this has been an intriguing look into Reeveâs personality, it brings to light--at least in my eyes-- the possible origins of why Reeve and Veld are in allegiance in any regard. This is a man whom the Turks could trust, perhaps specifically who Veld and Tseng could trust as the leaders of the Turks, because the paths they had chosen were in alignment with Reeveâs own moral compass. The Turks were fighting to save the lives of Veld and his daughter, Elfe, the leader of Avalanche, as well as fighting to save the planet from destruction, all while never once threatening to betray the Shinra Companyâs secrets, even as the company they protected sought their extermination.
My question originally began as âHow did Veld and Reeve meet?â, especially since Reeve was nothing more than a man climbing the ranks at the beginning of Before Crisis. If he and Veld had implied history before that point (which seems to be the implication), then where did their paths first cross? How did these two men figure out their paths in some way aligned? To the point where now we have Reeve making decisions from his position of power to help a group of people a hairâs breadth away from execution, running between two opposing forces with massive resources, all hell bent on their destruction?
Itâs a question I hadnât seen answered in any part of the Compilation yet, but itâs an aspect of Reeveâs character that I had forgotten over the long years, and that I wanted to bring to the surface once more. Especially with our Turks looking so stunning in the Remakeâs trailers, and with Reeve being one of the men that will be betrayed so soon into the events of Final Fantasy VIIâs Remake, if everything goes according to the original game. Because President Shinra cares about end goals and not the lives and materials lost in obtaining them... and it is incredibly obvious that Reeve is cut from a different bolt of cloth than that. I only wonder how theyâll have the Turksâ side play out alongside all of the grand schemes of the executives. ...itâll be a thing Iâll be awaiting with much anticipation, and a foolâs hope, always.
Iâll leave you with the scene in question from Before Crisis Episode 20, so you can think over this connection the way that I have, and hopefully beyond it. Enjoy, my friends.
Player Thanks for showing me the way. You don't have to go this far for us, you know.
Cait Sith Ah, don't you worry none about it. Veld and I go back a ways.
Player ?! You knew we were working under Veld's orders?!
Cait Sith It said so in the fortune, it did.
Player (Thought) This is bad. That means everybody knows about our betrayal. What am I going to
Cait Sith Don't you worry none. I won't be telling any of this to the President.
Player Huh?!
Cait Sith I told you, we go back a ways. How is Veld? I thought you could only leave the Turks when you're dead.
Player I'm sorry. That's⊠classified informationâŠ
Cait Sith Is that so⊠I guess you're right.
Player I'm really sorryâŠ
Cait Sith Ah, nothing to be sorry for! Just tell him I'm rootin' for him! Now, let's get a move on, shall we?

King of Prism SSS episode 8 commentary (Yu)
So, in my opinion, I think the episodes weâve seen up until now could be more or less enjoyed to the fullest by newcomers and/or people who havenât seen Rainbow Live.Â
But from here on out, there is a notable change. And I really mean from here on out: Episodes 8 - 12 basically require having seen Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live to be fully understood I think.Â
So if you watched this episode and thought wait.... why did they just skip over Yuâs backstory like that!?!
Two words: Rainbow Live.Â
Anyway letâs get started.
Iâm surprised the subber knew the correct spelling to ViviC Heart Session. That takes.... research!? ....Wait, itâs in the credits. Still, thatâs some non-linear translation.Â
Also I kinda wonder when and where ViviC Heart Session came from in canon. Yeah itâs the Pride the Hero ending, but there is a whole story on how they made and performed Dramatic Love for the Christmas concert, but nothing on ViviC Heart Session as far as I know.Â
If youâre wondering why theyâre all acting so weird, there have already been not one but TWO different story arcs in the Prism Rush Main Story about Yu ambitiously deciding to write songs and biting off way more than he could chew ahah....Â
They know.Â
So this kinda dates this episode? Sort of? Despite the way it seems in episode 1, clearly the Prism One doesnât take place right after it was announced ahah.Â
The way Yu says this line makes me think itâs probably been a month or so already.Â
So maybe it was announced in July-August (episode 1 takes place in âsummerâ), and happened in September-October, something like that?
So like literally JUST as I was thinking to myself âwow the subs have really gotten better in this episode....â THIS had to happen... How dare you translate Taigaâs âITâS A FESTIVALâ as âparty timeâ................
Oh well. Honestly though, aside from this, this episode has the best subs so far, BY FAR.Â
Been wondering for months how they would sub MUGEN HABUUUUUU because I had no idea how I would do it myself ahah.
Although they donât state it explicitly, itâs pretty clear this episode takes place in Okinawa. Among many other things, I think itâs the only place in Japan with habu.Â
I may or may not have thought way too hard for too long about how Taiga and Kakeru ended up in this boat together.Â
I mean I would like to think Taiga chose Kakeru as his partner in good faith that they could work well together.Â
BUT KAKERU ISNâT EVEN ROWING COME ONÂ
HEâS JUST ENJOYING THE VIEW
THE VIEW BEING TAIGA IF YOU DIDNâT GET MY DRIFT
I suppose it could have been random pairs, but Shin and Leo also ended up together and that seems not random ahah. Speaking of which...
When I saw this episode for the first time I saw it as a 3-pack with Leoâs episode coming right before (the theatrical Part 3). So I had just gone though Leoâs episode for the first time and all the baggage that came with it less than 10 minutes earlier.Â
And needless to say I was VERY MUCH NOT OVER IT AND EXPERIENCING VERY HIGH EMOTIONS ABOUT LEO
So during this scene I was like like
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
MY SONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
SAVE HIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMÂ
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
It actually took me until at least my second or third viewing to catch Kakeru trying to take a selfie with Taiga in the background there and I lost my shit.Â
BTW I just want to mention that ViviC Heart Session was made for this episode. Well yes I know it wasnât literally made for this episode, but itâs always sounded tropical for me and it just could not be more perfect.
I have been wondering for months what Taiga says here and Iâm still not sure. (Not that I think this subtitle is wrong, but I mean I canât make out the Japanese he uses. I just know folks in the theater laugh about it. Or they could just be laughing at Taigaâs method of escaping from Yu.)
Me at cheering:Â âITâS SHIN. PICK UP.â
âNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOâ
I wonder if like, they all got together and tried to figure out who Yu was least likely to hang up on.
But seriously though
WHO COULD EVER HANG UP ON SHIN
YOU MONSTERÂ
I said once that Jin was the best voicework in SSS, but Taiga man I dunno. Taiga is up there too. This scream is just so..... BRILLIANT..........
My reaction here changes from âOMG TAIGA ARE YOU OKâ to just laughing hysterically. Sometimes in the same showing. Taiga Iâm sorry.Â
My new desktop background.
Seriously this episode is just SO BEAUTIFUL.Â
Such a simple plot, but such amazing atmosphere and visuals that really take it SO MUCH FURTHER.
If I stopped to take screenshots of everything I thought looked amazing this post would never end. So just know Iâm definitely thinking it. Just goddamn.Â
For a long time I wondered how and why Minato found about about this.
But then I realized it actually makes a lot of sense.
So remember in my last post when I talked about my theory that Minato and Yu probably joined Edel Rose at the same time? Well, when Yu met Leo, basically the first thing he did was brag about knowing Over the Rainbow. So he probably did the same to Minato, and/or Minato just noticed him being way too friendly with Kouji.Â
Considering Minato entered Edel Rose FOR KOUJI there is no way he wouldnât notice that and wonder about it.Â
So one day he probably worked up the courage to ask Kouji about it, and.....
Oh boy.Â
BTW if youâre thinking huh? Yuâs family was separated? What?Â
See: The Ito/Kouji plot in Rainbow Live. (And bring tissues.)
Just the comparison of how fast he picks up here. Even though the first thing he does is complain to her itâs like.... HALF A SECOND from when he sees itâs Ito to when he answers omg.....Â
So I kinda questioned this subtitle here. Because the literal Japanese is just him saying âITâS LATE!âÂ
So I always thought he meant it like âDo you know what time it is!?â
But then I thought about it some more. And I remembered the Rose Party 2018 event, where the voice actors played a game where they all decided new aspects of the characters. And one of the things that were tasked with deciding (at the afternoon performance I believe) was what Yu does every night before he goes to bed. And one of the answers was âdiscusses life problems with Itoâ.Â
So, maybe Ito does call Yu every night so he had been waiting on a call from her for a while....Â
And if so, in that context this subtitle is spot on.Â
You win, Crunchyroll.Â
Cheering audience:Â âTHAT WAYâ
Yu was so impressive Kakeru stopped taking pictures of Taiga for a full minute.Â
DID I MENTION THIS EPISODE IS FUCKING BEAUTIFULÂ
But so like. As soon as they started heading up the hill. Like practically from when they called his name, I was like..... Yuâs gonna cry.Â
So then it was many long, long seconds of anticipation.....
until finally this.....
And I was not disappointed.Â
Of all the beautiful things in this episode, I think the most beautiful thing may just be Yuâs crying animation here. Heâs such a beautiful crier.Â
I love this scene so much. It brings me so much joy. Because heâs not crying because heâs hurt or sad.Â
Heâs crying because he realized he has friends.Â
HEâS CRYING BECAUSE HE HAS FRIENDS
YU
YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
You know, I didnât even realize Taiga was hiding behind Kakeru until someone in the stream pointed it out.
Am I an asshole because this is Yuâs episode but most of my favorite moments involve Taiga/Kakeru.Â
HUG HIM
HUG HIMMMMMM
OH MY GAWD I have NEVER so desperately wanted to reach through the screen and hug an anime character
Also Leo always cries when anyone else is crying.Â
I spent so much time looking at Kakeru and Minato that I didnât even realize Taiga too..... Theyâre BOTH sleeping on top of Minato omg.....
Also I canât help but laugh that Leo is the big spoon on Shin. But it doesnât surprise me. If you read Prism Rush stuff, Leo aggressively cuddling Shin in his sleep is nothing new.
Damn but. Okay so like, another way in which seeing this episode right after Leoâs influenced me is, during Leoâs episode I kept thinking about what PriPara coords were closest to the outfits that the boys were wearing and how I was totally gonna record arcade videos with them.Â
And then we get to this and I was like OH MAN I canât wait until that outfit comes out so I can put it on my character.... then I was like.... WAIT.....
And I realized this is basically the only idol anime I watch currently where I canât have the clothes and I was like......... ahhhh.... not fair..........
Seriously though it is kind of odd. For me anyhow.
But also because they donât have to worry about an arcade game for King of Prism, they have a lot more freedom. Like in a show like this, usually all the important coords that season will all uniformly have wings or holograms or otherwise follow some kind of a theme.
But with this itâs like... WHATEVER. Give Yu a huge floaty cross?? SURE WHY NOT!!!! ahah......
PRISM LIIIIVE
Okay so I know this animation is straight from Rainbow Live.Â
But this lightning guitar here, itâs a recolor of Saraâs guitar from PriChan isnât it?
And if it is, thisâs the first/only specifically PriChan (not PriPara) reference I know of in SSS.
So I guess the Prism System doesnât score Prism Lives for boys yet, huh....?
So one Prism Live + one jump = this.Â
But I suppose you could also argue that although Yuâs show was super personal and meaningful to him, he really didnât do much for the audience did he? (The in-universe audience I mean, as it did plenty for me haha.) It was a rather street-style show in that aspect when you think about it.Â
Oh well, I guess no matter what someone has to be last................................
Ah man anyway this episode.
So when I saw it for the first time, it actually didnât leave that much of an impression on me. But thatâs because it was a bit overshadowed by how EXTREMELY EMOTIONALLY DISTRAUGHT I was from Leoâs episode, and then I ended up leaving the theater thinking about the um, surprise thatâs gonna happen next week in Alexanderâs episode. So this episode kinda fell by the wayside.Â
I was actually kinda jealous of how much you guys in the stream were freaking out about it. It really made me wish I had the chance to see it independently without the influence of Leo and Alexander. There are definitely advantages to watching these week-to-week instead of in odd bunches.Â
Because the more I watched it, the more I really REALLY liked it, and now I think itâs probably my third favorite character episode after Taigaâs and Leoâs. (Or maybe even second. I keep flip-flopping.)
I was also a bit blindsided by how this episode didnât really follow the normal formula. Since they skipped over Yuâs backstory, they had time for other things. They had time for, dare I say it... âfillerâ? By that I mean, time to focus on just the boys being boys. Although itâs something we get a lot of on Prism Rush, I realized itâs something we have been severely lacking in the movies and anime. Another big difference between this series and typical Pretty Series/Aikatsu-type anime (other than not being able to have the coords......) is the lack of filler, and I realized how truly valuable it can be. This episode is just such a jewel.Â
So in between last week and this week I picked up a magazine (spoon 2Di vol. 50) with director commentary, and this was the last episode he commented on.Â
He said this episode is about Yu going through his ârebellious phaseâ, which he never had the chance to have when he was younger since his family split up during such an important part of his childhood and he felt he had to be strong for his mom and all that.Â
So instead he goes through it with his Edel Rose family.
GAAAAAH
Probably my favorite thing about Yu is how weâre able to see him gradually grow and change more than any other character I think.Â
Who would have though that little boy we met in Hokkaido would get this far......
So next up is Alexanderâs episode and um....
You may have noticed me talking significantly less about that episode that I have about others. And thereâs a reason for that. And itâs not because I have nothing to say about it......
The events in Alexanderâs episode basically set off a continuity train until the end of the series. IMHO it doesnât matter what order you watch episodes 2-8 in, but from here on out itâs definitely all connected.Â
So basically what Iâm trying to get at is.... um.... g..... get emotionally ready for some future cliffhangers. Iâm sorry.Â
Also, your last chance to properly prepare by watching Rainbow Live.... you wonât be disappointed, I promise.......Â

JavaScript Frameworks & SEO A Stakeholder & Developer Guide
Last Updated - 2019-02-17
Have you noticed the Google search team has been 'dissing' JavaScript frameworks lately?
Frameworks like Angular, React, Polymer and Vue are popular with developers. Unfortunately, they negatively impact your search results and ability to engage with customers.
Most marketers, business owners and stakeholders are not technical enough to have an intelligent discussion with developers about real business goals and how the use of these frameworks impedes achieving those goals.
I think John Mueller is even lamenting the web's future if the popularity and performance hit these frameworks havecontinues to grow.
Given the number of SEOs who have a good grasp on technical SEO for static HTML, if you want to differentiate yourself, understanding how JS works, where it works with SEO, where it blocks SEO, what the effects are on other search engines & clients
Frameworks are designed to appeal to developers, not business goals.
For the best online experience you should use JavaScript to enhance HTML, not create it. Sure there are times where you need to render markup after a page renders, but for consumer oriented content sites those times are very rare.
As a marketer or business stakeholder what can you do?
How can you either communicate your requirements or hire the right developers to help you achieve these goals?
This article will most likely irritate developers but help business owners and stakeholders have a better technical understanding of how the web works so you can engage your development team on a more level platform.
I plan on answering the following questions and providing even more insight on related topics:
While I think business owners, marketers and stakeholders will benefit the most from this article I hope I can reach some developers. We have a problem on the web and it is the abuse of JavaScript frameworks.
The Impact of Frameworks on User Experience and SEO
Google's search team has emphasized how frameworks and the use of single page web applications impede their ability to index your pages. They also emphasize how page rendering time is very important for SEO and customer engagement.
The search team is not alone. Chrome developer evangelists have also been demonstrating the cost of JavaScript on user experience for years. Microsoft has a small team addressing web performance issues because they know it is a problem.
when a website is slow, those lost conversions and ad dollars donât just evaporate â they go to a competitor. Rick Viscomi
Unfortunately, the guidance and research provided by these teams is largely ignored by developers. I know because developers give me grief about this topic all the time.
The Google, Microsoft and other browser teams have to tread lightly so they don't 'piss off' what they consider a key constituent, developers.
I don't care if I rub fellow developers the wrong way. I want the web to work well because it benefits everyone.
My goal is to deliver the best user experience possible to acheive business goals first, not have a good time as a developer.
I am a web developer known for my stance against 'fast food' JavaScript frameworks because they negatively impact user experience.
I used to be an advocate for single page web applications, I even wrote a book on how to develop SPAs. But the SPAs I advocated for are different than the SPAs popular with developers today.
My version of a SPA focused on UX and loading fast. I even followed the now deprecated Google AJAX crawling specification.
Today's SPAs load slowly and frustrate search engines. So much so they delay indexing the content till they get around to it. The complex JavaScript in these frameworks makes it difficult for Google to render the content and index it.
Google can render and does get around to indexing single page application content. There is just no guarantee if and when the pages will be rendered.
Let me translate the messaging from Mountain View to business terms:
If you use a JavaScript framework your SEO is screwed.
Here are just a few anecdotes about JavaScript and SEO to emphasize why things go awry.
"If you search for any competitive keyword terms, itâs always gonna be server rendered sites. And the reason is because, although Google does index client rendered HTML, itâs not perfect yet and other search engines donât do it as well. So if you care about SEO, you still need to have server-rendered content."
When you opt into or your developers push you into using a JavaScript framework with heavy client-side rendering (CSR) you are effectively opting out of a competitive position for organic search.
"Sometimes things donât go perfectly during rendering, which may negatively impact search results for your site." âIn December 2017, Google deindexed a few pages of Angular.io (the official website of Angular 2). Why did this happen? As you might have guessed, a single error in their code made it impossible for Google to render their page and caused a massive de-indexation."
CSR page are loaded by browsers and spiders with no content. This is what a typical single page application site looks like to a search engine:
Do you see what is missing?
That's right, your content, the stuff you need the search spider to read so you can get indexed!
Assuming the spider does not need to do anything other than execute your JavaScript they will eventually get around to investing resources into rendering your content. But the first pass is really one with JavaScript disabled.
None of the Google search team members has revealed how they determine if and when to return to a page and fully execute your scripts. My guess is it depends on how many links they detect to the page, how much authority the domain has and the quality of existing content.
There is probably much more to it, but those are probably high level criteria.
This is why so many site owners report their SEO being destroyed when they deploy a JavaScript heavy site, Google does not bother rendering the content.
But wait, there is more!
How do SPA links work?
How do Single Page Applications work period?
I already showed you what your SPA markup looks like. Now it is time to learn what a single page application is and how they evolved.
What are Single Page Applications
At the beginning of the decade the web was facing its biggest competition ever, mobile apps. At the time browsers and web standards were very fragmented. About 10 years ago jQuery was rapidly adopted by most web developers as the defacto way to create modern websites.
jQuery abstracted away most of the API implementation differences we faced at the time and made JavaScript approachable. For most of us, this was the first enjoyable JavaScript experience.
You see to most developers JavaScript is this odd, bastardized curly bracket-based language that works in the browser. Not only did jQuery smooth out browser bugs it made JavaScript and DOM manipulation easy.
We (developers) went nuts.
After a year or so using jQuery I became very comfortable creating highly interactive user experiences. I also started doing more and more AJAX, where you call an API to get data from the server.
Like many others I realized I could fetch raw data, render it in the browser and update the markup without needing the user to load a new page.
In 2010 I built my first mobile-first, single page application (SPA). At the time no one called them SPAs, I was sort of a pioneer. I launched an application with over 400 views (pages) that loaded really fast over 3G.
I knew I was onto something at the time. Performance and user experience were, and still are, a primary requirement for any of my projects.
Fast forward a year or two and we started seeing the SPA term used more and more. jQuery was not really suited for this new type of web application.
Plus, most 'web developers' are not really web developers, they are back-end developers.
So frameworks started to emerge from the ooze of the minds of back-end developers...more on this in the next section.
Single Page Applications & Deep Linking
The other problem these JavaScript heavy sites suffer from is the lack of deep linking. This is because they use a hack involving the URL hash tag.
This technique was originally designed in the early days of the web to provide a way to jump to different parts of a web page from a table of contents.
Back in the early 90s, when I first started writing HTML, the web was dominated by academic content. There were thousands of research papers available online. These are long documents, typically with a table of contents early in the document. The table of contents typically had these jump or hash fragment links setup to allow readers to jump to a sub-topic without scrolling down the page.
For the record I started using this technique as it was originally intended for my articles. Just check the list at the top of this article.
When a user clicks one of these links a hash fragment is added to the URL. This made it easier to share URLs to quote or reference specific sections in a page. The hash fragment value is not passed to the server, it is only a signal to the browser.
Fast forward to the modern web. Browsers added the 'hashchange' event when the URL hash fragment changed.
SPAs rely on the hashchange event to drive client-side rendering processes. Developers may also trigger DOM manipulations based on user activity, like clicking links and buttons or entering values in a form.
Twitter is even credited with inventing the 'hashbang', #!, most SPAs use to differentiate a traditional anchor from a SPA anchor.
https://yoursite.com/#!route-to-page-content
Search engine spiders typically don't execute the JavaScript to 'find' links and content. Google has stated multiple times to use real links and not hash fragments for direct access to your content.
Single page applications typically use an App Shell model. This is where the core page layout is rendered first. Then each view or page's content is rendered in the main content area. There may be some of the main layout altered as the application lives in the browser, but for the most part it is static.
When the user 'navigates' JavaScript is executed to compose updated HTML and replace the main content.
Unfortunately for SEO the spider must 'figure out' all the client-side URLs.
I say unfortunately, but you, the business owner, is the unfortunate one because spiders don't bother executing the code to trigger navigation changes.
Google recommends you use server-side rendering and real anchor tags with real URLs.
They have recently released updated guidance on using single page applications. What it really says is, if your developers insist on using a fast food JavaScript framework (or three) then use the server-side rendering component available for most of these frameworks.
The new guidance is really a simplified version of their AJAX Crawling specification they deprecated a few years ago. That policy focused on you converting the SPA slug (hash fragment value) to a queryString parameter and configuring your server to look for this queryString value.
When the server detected the parameter it would use that value to render the content on the server and give that to the spider.
It was complex and I think I may have been the only developer with a system that supported this technique.
This means Google wants you to render the pages to a static web site and use the statically rendered pages instead of client-side rendered pages. At this point you can also eliminate the need to load the framework code on the client as well since most of their work was done on the server.
This is the model I migrated to a couple of years ago. I sat back and looked at all the code and workflow I needed to manage just to allow content to be rendered both on the server and the client and thought, this is a waste of time and energy.
I was right.
If your developers talk to you about Isomorphic JavaScript, just say no. Tell them to just render the content on the server and forget the client-side ceremony.
They may need to lie to their developer friends to stay cool, but that's OK. Your bottom line matters more.
Today I use a series of nodejs Lambdas in AWS to render my pages to a static website. I use some client-side JavaScript, but it is a tiny fraction of what most sites load. The advent of service workers have made it possible to remove the vast majority of my client-side script, you should look into that as an option.
Even if your site does not use a framework you can follow the SSR/static site guidance for better organic results.
Look, Google is trying to appeal to developers because they fear they have lost the battle against fast food frameworks. So, they are doing an end run to get content they can index and maybe, just maybe sites people will use. They even give developers more code to play with!
This is a big part of what AMP is doing.
My advice, avoid using single page applications and frameworks if SEO matters to your business.
The Evolution or Decay of JavaScript Frameworks
Back to the JavaScript timeline.
We started seeing new frameworks emerge that appealed to these back-end first developers. Angular was the first popular framework. It was soon followed by React. Others came along, but failed to get as much traction as these two have. I even loosely called my collection of small libraries and architecture 'Love2SPA'.
Note: Angular and Polymer were created at Google. This does not mean the search or browser teams are fans of these frameworks. At any large enterprise there is 'internal strife' executives tend to gloss over.
Do as I say, not as the team in the other building does
Unfortunately, these frameworks were designed without considering business (UX) goals and how browsers work. Instead they focused on creating a 'great' developer experience.
Their architecture largely borrows from back-end best practices and tries to shoe-horn them on the browser. The problem is they are largely built orthogonal to the way browser plumbing works.
This means these frameworks have to add thousands of lines of code to get server-side 'best practices' in the browser instead of leveraging what the browser natively offers.
This is why pages often feel locked up or jumpy as you scroll them. If you wonder why a web page takes 30-60 seconds to render, most likely one of these frameworks is to blame.
The technical term for this is 'jankiness'.
Each of these frameworks relies on 100s of kilobytes of JavaScript. But it does not stop there.
Often these frameworks are extended with additional, poorly optimized, libraries and components. jQuery suffers from a similar phenomena with the plugin ecosystem. These components compound the weight these frameworks require.
The extensions increase the JavaScript payload to Megabytes.
Developers are lazy and suffer attention deficit disorder in mass. This means they tend to dump multiple frameworks on a web page. I am finding it more and more common to see 2-4 frameworks stacked on top of jQuery and other 'helper' libraries.
The result is 3-6MB of JavaScript, most of which is never used, but delays a page from becoming interactive.
But it does not stop there. I am discovering more and more sites with 10-50MB JavaScript files, not just total, but single files that large.
Not to mention the cost to develop and maintain these Frankensteins is tremendous.
As an SEO, digital marketer, etc. you have probably heard you need a fast web server, optimize images, etc. While you should do these things, audit your site's JavaScript. The payoff is much higher.
Each tab in the browser has a single thread to do all the tasks associated with rendering the page. JavaScript is the most expensive task a browser performs. When a script is encountered all other tasks are halted until the script is loaded, parsed and executed.
If the script modifies the DOM (HTML structure) it restarts the critical rendering path, causing further delays. These frameworks almost always cause this expensive restart.
Developers rarely feel this pain, or have become so numb to its affects they fail to realize how much JavaScript cost.
They almost always work on high speed machines with i7 CPUs and 16GB of RAM. Consumers tend to use cellphones with far less powerful CPUs and memory constraints. The consumer experience amplifies any performance tax exponentially.
Ask them to test on a Moto5 class phone over 3G. If your page can reach time to first interaction in less than 5 seconds then things are looking good. If not make them work on the site more.
I will show you how you can do this without buying a phone later!
The JavaScript Performance Tax
You have 3 seconds to impress. Scientifically you actually have 1 second because that is where the mind starts to perceive latency from expectations.
This is why at 3 seconds half the traffic to web pages have left, they assume the page is not reliable.
Most tend to look at page speed in terms of how long a response takes to go from the server to the client, called time to first byte.
This is wrong.
A typical web page's load and rendering profile has about a 5% time to first byte allocation. This means 95% of the time it takes to render a web page is how long it takes to process all the network responses, paint the content on the screen and get out of the way.
"80-90% of the end-user response time is spent on the frontend. Start there."
Of all the things that slow the rendering processes down, JavaScript is by far the most taxing resource type.
When a script is encountered the browser request it from the server, which should take 200-1000ms over good broadband. But most users are not on broadband, they are on cellular connections today. This means you need to budget 1-3 seconds for a script file to download.
Multiply this by 5-10 if you have one of those 50MB scripts!
You are not done, not even close.
Now the browser stops all rendering related tasks and waits for the script to be processed.
This processing includes parsing the script and executing the entire script. This takes time. Large frameworks are typically 100-500kb of JavaScript. On average mobile phones this takes a few seconds.
If you have more than one script and most pages have dozens, this process is repeated.
Even if the markup and CSS have rendered some items on the page it will feel frozen. You cannot even scroll the page.
To a consumer this indicates the page is broken. They don't wait, they leave.
Meanwhile they have paid to download your bulky payload and received no benefit.
The business has also paid for server capacity and bandwidth with nothing to show for the effort.
Both entities are taxed so the developer could have 'fun'.
Ways You Can Measure Web Performance Without An Advanced Engineering Degree
Site owners need a way to audit their sites so they can track progress and communicate to developers.
There are many free tools available to measure web performance. I see many recommended in the marketing world, but honestly, they only seem to focus on time to first byte, not the remaining 95% of the puzzle.
There are two free tools I recommend everyone involved in a website learn to use, WebPageTest and browser developer tools.
WebPageTest is a free site you can quickly audit any public URL from multiple data centers around the world and from a wide variety of browsers and devices. In short you can easily see how your pages render for any of your potential visitors.
The problem with WebPageTest is how much data is collected and reported back. It is overwhelming, even to developers. But there are a few key numbers and visuals you should focus.
I wonât go into details on these items in this article. I do that is other posts, including one analyzing airline websites.
When you run your test, I recommend selecting the 'Chrome' tab and enabling the Lighthouse test. This will give you a extra data, including how well you score as a progressive web app.
Pro Tip: Go to https://www.webpagetest.org/easy.php to have a preconfigured environment for your page's test.
You can run a Lighthouse test right from your local Chrome browser.
Each browser has built in developer tools, which include performance auditing features. Again, I wonât dive into these tools today, and they can be very technical.
Lighthouse does a good job surfacing meaningful data in a way anyone should be able to understand. The tool reports on many user experience metrics and breaks them into categories like Progressive Web App, Best Practices, Accessibility and even a token SEO section.
Both Lighthouse and WebPageTest can be run locally using node modules. WebPageTest can also be stood up locally using a virtual machine or container.
These come in handy when you have an automated test script or continuous build process. The VMs and containers also make it possible to run WebPageTest against internal business tests.
I highly recommend making them part of your acceptance tests. As a stakeholder you should also consider adding a performance budget to your developer requirements. You can tie this budget to tools like WebPageTest and Lightouse.
These are just two of my favorite tools. There are others like WebHint and the detailed audit tools baked into browser tools.
Some of the commonly recommended tools in the SEO space, like Pingdom, GTMetrix and even the Google Speed Test tool are sort of useless.
The Google tool simply does not provide enough insight into the metrics it reports.
Pingdom and GTMetrix really just measure time to first byte, which is important, but accounts for roughly 5% of a page's average render time.
Developers love to write code and JavaScript is the code engine that drives much of the web. It also adds unwanted latency to a page's rendering cycle and causes Google to hit the brakes when indexing content.
Single Page Applications can obfuscate links to content as well as delay your ability to have content indexed.
If your marketing relies on content earning good search engine placement you should think twice about using JavaScript frameworks.
Developers want frameworks because they make the front-end look more like back-end and they abstract away JavaScript. As a site owner you need to have a minimal amount of technical skills to have reasonable conversations with your dev teams about your business goals.
Trust me, your site does not need a JavaScript framework, HTML and CSS can achieve most of your needs without JavaScript's help.

Lewis Hamilton determined to contest German Grand Prix despite illness
Listen to the German Grand Prix on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sport website from 14:00 BST
At one point on Saturday morning, Lewis Hamilton was not even sure he would be able to race in the German Grand Prix, so bad did he feel with an illness that has been bothering him this weekend at Hockenheim and which took a turn for the worse overnight.
His Mercedes team had prepared the car for the possibility that they might have to sub the world champion out of qualifying and replace him with reserve driver Esteban Ocon.
So to take yet another pole position was a bigger achievement than it might at first look in a season that so far has passed in a blur of silver.
âI was really not expecting to be able to fight for pole today,â Hamilton said. âI felt pretty bad this morning and there was a moment when we werenât even sure we would be doing the weekend.
âBut I have never missed a race weekend in my life and for us competitors you canât miss a single race.
âI havenât even been in most of the [engineering] meetings; Iâve just been sleeping and then waking up and getting in the car. But the team have done such a great job in terms of the processes we went through and I was really happy with the car in my last lap.â
Itâs not entirely clear whether Hamilton would have been able to take pole had Ferrari, who went into qualifying as favourites, not shot themselves in the foot again, with the cars of both Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel going out with engine problems that left them 10th and last respectively.
But Hamilton was so pleased with his performance, despite his discomfort, that he reckoned he would have had a chance either way.
âIt would have been close between us and the Ferraris,â he said. âI am not convinced they would have been much quicker than us, if at all. Leclerc was doing some good times over the weekend but it wasnât meant to be.â
Hamilton would not say what was wrong with him, simply saying he was âa bit under the weatherâ.
Team boss Toto Wolff said: âThere is a flu going around in the paddock and he was not feeling great.â And Mercedes said he had been off colour since earlier in the week.
Hamilton added: âIt has been a real challenge and tomorrow is going to be worse.
âJust doing 12 laps today â and yesterday in practice â was so hard. I donât know how tomorrow will go.
âI will try to sleep as much as I can and just try to recuperate and make sure I have got as much energy as possible. If it is super-hot like yesterday or even like today it could be really bad, but if itâs a little bit cooler like itâs forecast to be, it might it ease it up a little bit. But where thereâs a will thereâs a way. I wonât give up, thatâs for sure.â

The story behind Leclercâs journey to the top
Chequered Flag podcast: Qualifying review
Preview: Home comforts or more heartache for Vettel?
Another Ferrari fiasco
Ferrari should have had at least two wins so far this season â and arguably could have had as many as four â yet halfway through the year they remain on zero. And qualifying at the German Grand Prix showed exactly why.
They went into qualifying looking favourites but, remarkably, the cars of both Leclerc and Vettel broke down. And from looking like they could have locked out the front row, they start in the midfield and right at the back.
Vettel did not even manage a single flying lap â his intercooler developed a problem as soon as he left the pits at the start of the first session. It was the second time in three races the Germanâs qualifying has been hit by an engine problem. And he said it felt âvery bitterâ for it to happen at his home race.
Leclerc made it through the first and second sessions â quickest on soft tyres in the first; second behind Lewis Hamilton in the second, when both switched to mediums, because they wanted the more durable tyre to start the race â only for his carâs fuel-pump drive to fail and force him to miss the top-10 shootout.
Itâs unknown exactly how things would have shaken out had the Ferraris made it into the final part of qualifying to dispute pole with Hamilton. But as Leclerc said: âMercedes were very quick but we definitely had the pace to challenge them at least. Itâs a shame.â
So the Italian team have another failure to add to what is becoming an embarrassingly long list this year. Itâs worth going through them, to underline what might have been.
Leclerc lost victory in Bahrain when his engine went sour in the closing laps
Vettel spun while racing Hamilton in Bahrain and turned a second place into a fifth
Leclerc crashed out of qualifying in Azerbaijan when looking a certain bet for pole
Ferrari made a strategic error that led to Leclerc being knocked out in the first session of qualifying in Monaco
Vettel made a mistake while leading in Canada and went off track, leading to the penalty that cost him the race
Vettel had a problem with the air pressure line to the engine in qualifying in Austria, where he could have joined Leclerc on the front row
And now both cars have had engine problems in qualifying in Germany
On top of that, Leclerc made a series of small errors in qualifying in the early races of the season, until turning around his form after Canada.
There is also a question mark over whether Ferrari made a mistake in choosing to start Leclerc on soft tyres rather than mediums in Austria. Had he been on the mediums, he may have been able to stop later and hold off Max Verstappenâs late charge to victory for Red Bull.
And thatâs without even going into the questionable wisdom of their employment of team orders â largely to favour Vettel â in all of the first five races.
All told, it makes for grim reading, especially as their title challenges in 2017 and 2018 also unravelled as a result of a combination of reliability problems, driver errors and operational issues. And it underlines both the seriousness of the malaise at the team, and their apparent inability to do anything about it.
After qualifying, Wolff told Sky: âFerrari have an illness that they need to cure and we need them so we can have a competitive championship.â
Tyre choice available for the German Grand Prix
Wolff later said he had got himself âlost in translationâ with that comment, and that he had been thinking of the German âdie Seucheâ which has a double meaning.
He explained: âIt means illness but it [also] means having lots of problems all the time â you donât seem to be getting yourself out of problems; it is nothing to do with an illness. When I said it, I felt like I probably said the wrong thing.â
The semantics, though, were largely irrelevant. Either way, Wolff had summed up the situation well.
Leclerc was his usual modest and humble self, pointing out that he had made his own mistakes this year so he could hardly question the team.
But he did add: âI feel for the team. One car is difficult, two cars is very, very unlikely and very difficult for the team. We need to understand the issues to try to not to reproduce them.â
The problem is, there are precious few signs as yet of the team being able to achieve that ambition.
Verstappen is hoping to add to his Austrian Grand Prix victory with a win at Hockenheim
Hamilton v Verstappen looks tasty
Had Leclerc â and Vettel â been up at the front as well, the race would have been set up nicely, for a fight between the dominant figures of the older generation and the two men who look most likely to take their place over the next few years.
But one man of each generation remains, and that means there is the chance of the first straight fight for victory between Hamilton and Verstappen. Which is a mouth-watering prospect.
Hamilton says his position in the championship will not affect his desire to battle Verstappen hard, despite the Dutchmanâs take-no-prisoners reputation.
âIâm here to win,â he said. âSo we battle. I approach it with respect. Heâs experienced enough now that I donât think Iâll have to approach it with caution. And for sure Iâll be pushing.
âBut every time I approach it I am always trying to make sure I keep position and donât collide with anyone. I will try to stay as far away from his possible.â
Verstappen did not sound that convinced that he would be able to take the fight to Mercedes. Heâs concerned that the need to start on soft tyres after an engine problem in second qualifying could hinder him, against the Mercedes on mediums.
âI donât know at the moment how much a fight we can put on,â said Verstappen, fresh from his monumental battle with Leclerc at Silverstone two weeks ago. âWe have a different strategy but we will always give it a go.
âIt doesnât matter to me who it is [Iâm fighting with] â if itâs Lewis or Charles. Of course I know Charles a bit better because we were racing a lot in the younger years in go-karting but it doesnât matter. As long as you are fighting for victory thatâs a positive thing.
There is also a chance for rain, in which both men excel.
âI love the rain,â Hamilton said. âSo if it rains, no problem.â

HOW TO STUDY FROM A TEXTBOOK EFFECTIVELY » all you need to know
youtube
Hello, everyone. Today, we will be talking about how to improve your reading skills such as speed, comprehension, and retention. For the purpose of this video, you can find some timestamps in a down bar below to jump right into the topic you want to know more of. This video was brought to you by Skillshare. Skillshare is an online learning community for creators with thousands of classes on planning, productivity, learning, and so on.

The first people to use the promo link in the description box will get their first two months for free. Then itâs as low as $10 a month after that so you can continue learning if you enjoy it. Or cancel if you donât, there is no risk whatsoever. You can also learn from anywhere. Just download the mobile app on Android or iPhone and tap into classes even if you are offline. For many university courses, reading skills play a major role in your grades and overall academic performance. Thereâs always so much you can read in a couple of hours, so knowing how to manage the amount of pages your teacher assigned you can translate into better preparation for class and also for future exams.
Before we develop on the subject of reading in itself, letâs talk about the elephant in the room, reading speed. The bad news is that thereâs no magic trick to improve reading speed. Youâll read faster as you read more. Actually, reading speed is a very dubious expression. It doesnât rely on how fast your brain can process one word after another, but how your brain can read more than one word at a time.
The average readersâ eyes focus on one word at a time. A speed reader is able to look at a sentence and read it at a glance, instead of having to look at every single word to understand their meaning, These readers can recognize four or five words at the glance instead of a single one. This is mostly developed through practice, and years, and years of reading. A good way to understand your reading speed capabilities is pointing at one written sentence right in the middle: Can you just read the word youâve pointed to or can your eyes glance at the words next to that word? Some people practice their reading speed by trying to skip words and see if their eyes and brain adjusts to that differentiated length. Either way, you shouldnât worry about the speed, but the quality of your reading First of all, just set your reading goals.
Not all readings in front of you will be of use for the class or course youâre taking. Have in mind the syllabus your professor provides you, or any other information regarding the topics that will be approached in class. In many cases, your teacher can hand out a 40 page article when they just want you to focus on only a couple of paragraphs. Knowing what kind of information you should be looking for in the document in advance can save you hours when reading for assignments. So, if you really donât know what to look for, just ask your professor.
Another thing that will help you understand better what youâre going to read is looking at the structure of the document. Any headers, sub headers, titles and bold and italic words should indicate the theme topic and main points of your texts. Knowing the key points that the author will approach before you start reading from the top will help you build focus and get engrossed in the text instead of passively searching for the authorâs purpose. First scan your text. Then, skim it. They are two totally separate concepts which are both from the mental to improve your knowledge on the text. Scanning is what you do for example, when you are scrolling through your contact list to find a specific name. You know what it should be finding so your brain focuses on a couple of words and ignores all the other information until you find it.
That is why searching your reading goals is so important if you donât know what you should be finding. Youâll be unable to scan your documents and scanning enables you to find key points and basic information like the objectives sought by the texts, the conclusion and main key arguments. Just highlight them or circle them if you need, then go back to the beginning of your text What if just done means that in a couple of minutes you can instantly put aside any paragraph and subheading that wonât be relevant to your studying? You will be able to ignore these paragraphs in the next reading steps because they are not relevant to your readings and will just waste your time. Usually these paragraphs contain background information, or are simply filler paragraphs that the author wrote to achieve a certain number of words. Skimming is your next step and that consists on fast non detailed reading. If you are in a rush, skimming will be everything you need to do to get your assignment done on time and still grab a few major concepts.
But it definitely wonât be enough to grasp the arguments in all their meaning Scheming what you understand the overall structure of the texts and where you should dedicate more time to do detailed reading. If you donât do it for skimming youâll start reading your text from the beginning and will have the same focus throughout different pages and the problem is thereâs a great chance youâll be more focused on the beginning of the text, where they usually have the most non important introductions and explanations. And you will lose focus on the main segments of the documents where the information you need is probably written.
After setting your goals scanning and skimming, you now can go back take a look at the text and ask yourself: what should I be learning here? Unless you are studying a very fact-based course like history, your assignments will most probably be not only informative, but have some meaning that you should grasp and comprehend. Take a look of what youâve just came through and find the main complicated areas that truly hold the material should be learning. After you identify these, thatâs where your detailed reading should take place. Detailed reading is what enables you to retain information and use it later. Itâs not a process of memorizing, but instead working on what youâve read and make it usable. The till reading means focusing on one word or sentence at a time. It means understanding the structure of a paragraph and the exact message it is trying to portray. Itâs not knowing it by heart, but instead, knowing how to explain what youâve read if someone asks you to. Iâve talked before about the passive and active ways you can use for studying and detailed reading definitely brings out the active method. There are dozens of different ways you can use for active reading from highlighting to creating flashcards on the subject to make a compilation of important key words.
The way you choose to do your active reading is totally up to you. But make sure to thoroughly work on information. My advice is to write on the margins can vary your opinion on the subject through very short summaries Do you agree with the authorâs point of view on the subjects? Do you think he could have had approached the topic in a different way? When you turned someone elseâs text into your own you are learning what youâre reading instead of just reading it. As soon as you draft your personal viewpoints on the matter youâre adding something to it. And thatâs how the learning process works. Also, donât be a slave to summarizing just for the sake of summarizing.
There are numerous ways on how to take notes from a textbook. or an article, but it does not define your comprehension on text. A well done reading can do more for you than the previous most organized sets of notes and summaries. Only take notes on a text if the document is completely unorganized, if the vocabulary and structure are complex enough, that they need rephrasing for a quick study session, or if the text is so long that having to refer back to it when revising is a chore on its own. If you have to take notes however be aware of the tone in your phrasing if you find yourself rewriting entire phrases you are doing it wrong and shouldnât be taking notes at all.
Instead, if you must write them change the words convey your opinions work on the text as if it was your own. Writing down these notes can definitely help retention for a short span of time, but believe me that in a few weeks, you will look at your notes as if they were alien to you, and youâve just lost a couple of hours writing them down. So try to value your time as much as you can before jumping into unnecessary work. So this is all for todayâs video if you want more college tips and techniques donât forget to subscribe and Iâll see you next week Bye!.

Packernet predictions: Week 7
As we prepare for week 7 of the 2017 NFL season, Packernet has decided to put our predictive powers to the test. Each week we will give you our picks and see how we stack up.
*Special guest predictions by Tecmo Bowl, courtesy of Sgt. Nathaniel Buschmann, currently serving in Iraq*
Tennessee Titans (3-3) at Cleveland Browns (0-6)Â Line: Titans by 5.5. Total: 45.5.Â
Ryanâs Pick: Titans
There is the tiniest part of me thatâs worried. The Titans have lost some weird games to some sub par teams. They also are walking into what they believe is a gimme the week before a bye which is a recipe for extremely sub par play.
Still, the Browns have not won a single game and have really not even come close to winning one. I suppose coming within 3 is sort of close but, man is this team terrible.
Jonâs Pick: Titans
Iâm picking against Cleveland until they give me a reason to second guess myself.
Tecmo Sim: Titans 23 Browns 21
Crowell is a good back. He put up over 150 yards in this game. Unfortunately nothing around him is very good. Better luck next year.
Jacksonville Jaguars (3-3) at Indianapolis Colts (2-4)Â Line: Jaguars by 3. Total: 43.5
 Ryanâs Pick: Jaguars
The Jaguars are weird. Although they seem to be a team that is a quarterback away from being a dominant force, itâs been their defense that is inconsistent. Here are the scores against so far this year; 7, 37, 7, 23, 9, 27. They have alternated wins and losses ever week based on the performance of their defense.
This week, if things stay the same is a win week. Considering the game is against the Colts, I donât find that hard to believe.
Jonâs Pick: Jaguars
This is an easy pick for me. Iâm shocked that the spread is only 3 this week. Indianapolis is just bad. Even with Fournette likely out this game, the Jaguars defense is too good for the Colts.
Tecmo Sim: Jaguars 16 Colts 42
The Jaguars have the talent to be one of the best teams in the league. Unfortunately they like to lose too much and when they lose they do it in spectacular fashion.
Baltimore Ravens (3-3) at Minnesota Vikings (4-2)Â Line: Vikings by 5.5. Total: 39
Ryanâs Pick: Vikings
I wanted very badly to pick the Ravens because the Vikings are very much overrated. Their 2 game win streak came on the back of a pathetic Bears team and a Packers team that couldnât eclipse 10 points.
Still, the Ravens just lost to the Bears last week in overtime and donât match up well against the Vikings. Strangely, the Ravens have been leaning on the run quite a bit and the Vikings, as we learned, donât give up much in the run.
Jonâs Pick: Vikings
How could I possibly pick Baltimore after last weekâs game? I canât. Minnesota isnât a team against which struggling offenses find their stride. Itâs unlikely that Minnesota will allow multiple special teams touchdowns like the Bears did. And since the Ravens offense canât score points, Iâm not sure how theyâll score this week. Minnesota should win by a lot.
Tecmo Sim: Vikings 20 Ravens 10
Just like that, the NFC North begins to slip through our fingers.
New York Jets (3-3) at Miami Dolphins (3-2)Â Line: Dolphins by 3. Total: 38
Ryanâs Pick: Jets
Unbelievably torn on this. The Dolphins defense has not given up more than 20 points in a single game. They have played the Titans, the Chargers, and the Falcons in Atlanta and have not given up more than 20 points. Thatâs absolutely insane. Whatâs really crazy is that their defense isnât that great. Their players are mediocre and their stats are slightly better than average. They are a true bend donât break defense.
The problem with the Dolphins is that they have also never put up more than 20 points. Let me rephrase that. There has never been a score of more than 20 points by either team through 5 Miami Dolphins games. In other words, donât watch Dolphins games.
With that, I could only draw a few conclusions in this game. First, the Dolphins can beat the best in the NFL but can also lose to the worst in the NFL. Second, the Jets are relatively consistent, beating bad teams but losing to good teams.
Considering the Dolphins arenât âgoodâ and the fact that the Jets already beat them once, Iâll take the safe route and pick the Jets.
Jonâs Pick: Jets
The Jets should be looking for a fifth consecutive win, but NFL referees are horribly incompetent. They apply rules inconsistently even when itâs the same people making decisions for every game. Itâs really unbelievable. With that out of the way, I donât have good reasons for liking the Jets. I donât like Miamiâs inconsistency, and I donât trust Cutler to not kill the team with either stupid throws, or downright laziness.
Tecmo Sim: Jets 31 Dolphins 28
Congrats to the Jets for their most recent victory in the losers bracket.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3) at Buffalo Bills (3-2)Â
Ryanâs Pick: Bills
The Bills defense has also not allowed more than 20 points in a game. Considering the Buccs have really not done much this year other than beat a terrible Bears teams after their week 1 bye and win against the Bengals in a close matchup, Iâm not a fan of the banged up Winston taking on this defense.
Jonâs Pick: Buccaneers
Buffaloâs loss to Cincinnati came as a tremendous shock to me. Iâd be less shocked if they lost this game. The Bucs have looked great as a whole in two games this season, and their offense looked great in three. The Bills have a hard time scoring points against anyone with all the injuries they have. On top of having a mediocre quarterback, they have absolutely no one to throw to with both Matthews and Charles Clay out. Itâs possible that Matthews returns this week, but who knows what impact heâll have. The Bucs have a dangerous offense that can score against the best teams when theyâre clicking. With E.J. Gaines questionable for Sundayâs game, I like Tampaâs chances even more, since thatâll take away just about any fear of throwing to Evans or Jackson on that side of the field.
Tecmo Sim: Bills 24 Buccaneers 14
LeSean McCoy runs wild for 173 yards. Hard to overcome that.
Carolina Panthers (4-2) at Chicago Bears (2-4)Â Line: Panthers by 3. Total: 40.5
Ryanâs Pick: Panthers
Although last week taught us that nothing is a certainty and the Bears have a weird ability to beat teams that are way better than they are, the Panthers have only lost two games and they were to arguably the two best teams in the NFL (Saints and Eagles). The Bears are not even in that conversation.
Jonâs Pick: Bears
On the surface, Carolinaâs defensive strength matches up well against Chicagoâs offensive strength. I think itâs a bit difficult to know just how good Carolinaâs rushing defense is considering how little teams run against them. And I want to think Carolina has an overall good team, but are they? Newton still struggles to throw intermediate routes, and he turns the ball over too often (which is why they lost against the Eagles last week). The Bears have played much better defense than even hardcore Bears fans expected, and their running game is one of the leagueâs best. Theyâre not doing it on volume alone, either. The Bears running game is shockingly efficient for a team that can do nothing but run, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Running the ball down the throats of an overrated rushing defense will bring the Bears their first two game win streak since weeks 9 and 10 in 2015.
Tecmo Sim: Panthers 14 Bears 24
The Panthers are way to talented to beat the Bears. It makes sense.
New Orleans Saints (3-2) at Green Bay Packers (4-2) Line: Saints by 4.5. Total: 47.5
Ryanâs Pick: Saints
Itâs never fun to pick against the Packers. I did it once before against the Falcons and it wasnât fun then either but I know when this team is in a tough spot. In this game the Packers lost Rodgers, lost their offensive line, lost their corners, and are going up against a Saints team that is every bit as good on offense as theyâve always been but have struck gold with a couple corners that are maybe the best duo in the NFL.
Crazy what a couple high picks can do for a team isnât itâŠ?
Jonâs Pick: Saints
Letâs be honest, Capers defense has been garbage for years now. The last time the Packers were a top 10 defense was 2010, and theyâve been in the bottom half of the league at least three years since then. That Capers is still employed amazes me every week. That the Packers have won so many games is a testament to Rodgers greatness. Their success has so little to do with anything else about the team, and his absence will show that starting this week. New Orleans is going to beat Green Bay as though the Packers are personally responsible for hurricane Katrina.
Tecmo Sim: Saints 28 Packers 24
The Packers put up a good fight but the Saints were just too much to handle.
Arizona Cardinals (3-3) vs. Los Angeles Rams (4-2)Â Line: Rams by 3. Total: 46.5
Ryanâs Pick: Rams
I want to ride high on the A.P. train and I do think the Cardinals are going to start looking like their 2016 self as a result of Peterson joining the team. Still, the Cardinals defense gives up far too many points, including 33 last week to the Buccs.
The Rams are not the Rams of old, and have more than enough ability to rack up points, already having put up 40+ points twice.
Ultimately I like the Rams defense to stop the Cardinals more than I like the Cardinals defense to stop the Rams.
 Jonâs Pick: Cardinals
I donât think Petersonâs game was a fluke. Tampa Bayâs rushing defense is certainly better than the Rams, who have proven time and time again to be amongst the leagueâs worst. Somehow, their 20 sacks have only translated to a 17th overall passing defense. If Peterson gets off to a good start again like I think he will, the Rams pass rush will slow down tremendously. This could be a high scoring game today.
Tecmo Sim: Cardinals 30 Rams 14
Ladies and gentlemen, itâs time to start taking the Cardinals seriously.
Dallas Cowboys (2-3) at San Francisco 49ers (0-6) Line: Cowboys by 6. Total: 47
Ryanâs Pick: Cowboys
I want desperately to pick the 49ers here. The Cowboys have yet to beat a team that isnât terrible and the 49ers are just a handful of points away from being 5-1. Everything in my bones is screaming to pick the 49ers.
But, with Zeke still not suspended thanks to the true owners of the NFL, the United States government, you have to like the Cowboys level of talent compared to the 49ers.
Jonâs Pick: Cowboys
C.J. Beathard provided a major boost to the 49ers offense last week, but it wasnât enough. Dallas has beaten up on the bad teams that theyâve played this season. Theyâre also in a tough spot, needing a win to stay in the NFC East playoff race. Maybe Garrett will lean on Elliot the way he should with late game leads this week, and theyâll win easily. Either way, Dallas should take this one.
Tecmo Sim: Cowboys 7 49ers 28
Terrance Williams is the top receiver with 28 yards. The 49ers arenât a good team but how do you lose a game like that? You donât.
Cincinnati Bengals (2-3) at Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) Line: Steelers by 5.5. Total: 41
Ryanâs Pick: Steelers
Neither team is all that impressive. Perhaps the only impressive win between the two teams is the Steelers win over the Chiefs and even there the Steelers were only able to put up 19 points. Fortunately for them, the Chiefs impoded and couldnât scrape together a 20 point game.
Still, I think the Steelers have the better team and Iâll trust that to win out.
Jonâs Pick: Steelers
Pittsburgh has got to be the most confusing team in the league this season. They scrape past the Browns, kill the Vikings, and then lose the Chicago, so we all start to think itâs just their road struggles showing up again. Except the next weak they beat the brakes off the Ravens, only to get smoked against the Jaguars at home the following week. Somehow, at the count of 9, they rise from the mat and score a knockout win against the Chiefs in Arrowhead. Theyâre like a Rocky movie. The Bengals offense is overly reliant on AJ Green, who Joe Haden has a history of slowing down. In 8 NFL games against the Browns with Joe Haden, Green has 35 catches for 474 yards and 4 TDs, which amounts to about 4 catches and 60 yards per game. Dave Bryan at Steelers Depot broke it down further and found that AJ Green had 19 passes for 323 yards and 2 TDs against Joe Haden, and that one of the TDs came on a busted coverage that resulted from Dalton snapping the ball before the Browns D was set. Thatâs good news for Steelers fans, bad news for Cincyâs winning prospects. Itâs hard to pick Pittsburgh given their erratic behavior, but I think Iâm okay taking them to beat the Bengals.
Tecmo Sim: Bengals 28 Steelers 14
Dalton throws 2 picks, Mixon runs for under 100 yards, Jeremy Hill is the top receiver. How in the world that leads to 28 points and a victory over the Steelers, I have no idea. But thatâs Tecmo!
Seattle Seahawks (3-2) at New York Giants (1-5)Â Line: Seahawks by 5. Total: 40
Ryanâs Pick: Seahawks
I havenât the slightest clue how the Giants won last week but I have to believe it had more to do with the Broncos imploding than anything. The Giants are still a team in the midst of a disaster.
The Seahawks are perennial Super Bowl contenders. The one thing to note is the location of the game. The Seahawks will have to fly to the other side of the country. That does have an impact.
I still take the Seahawks.
Jonâs Pick: Seattle
Thereâs just no way New York surprises another team. They have nothing on offense, and a mediocre defense. Even if the Giants run the ball well, Seattle is used to giving up 100+ on the ground and winning, unlike Denver.
Tecmo Sim: Seattle 34 Giants 7
Just in case anyone thought the Giants were for real.
Denver Broncos (3-2) at Los Angeles Chargers (2-4)Â Line: Pick. Total: 40.5
Ryanâs Pick: Chargers
This feels like a stupid pick. The Broncos are great and the Chargers are terrible right? Strangely, the Chargers are on a 2 game win streak and the Broncos lost 2 of 3, one of which was to the Giants after a bye week.
The issue with the Broncos seems to be an offense that hasnât put up more than 16 points in 3 weeks. The Chargers donât allow a ton of points and their offense should have enough fire power to put up 20.
I like the Chargers to outpace a Broncos defense that is on the ropes.
Jonâs Pick: Broncos
This is entirely a fanhood pick. My brain tells me to prepare for more disappointment today as the Broncos take on the Chargers without Emmanuel Sanders. But I hate the Chargers so much, and love the Broncos so much more that I canât bring myself to pick against them. Thereâs some reason to think that Denver might win though⊠There wonât be any negative impacts from crowd noise, for instance. And Denverâs D is probably looking for blood after last weekâs horrific showing.
Tecmo Sim: Broncos 21 Chargers 24
Like 2 ships passing in the night, the Chargers are starting to figure this football thing out. The Broncos seem to have had their moment.
Atlanta Falcons (3-2) at New England Patriots (4-2)Â Line: Patriots by 3.5. Total: 56
Ryanâs Pick: Falcons
Enough is enough. The Patriots have been stealing wins away from garbage teams. Now they go toe to toe with one of the best offenses in the NFL. The Falcons havenât put up many points the last two weeks but the Dolphins and Bills are tough. The Patriots defense is one of the worst in the NFL.
I like the Falcons to get their groove back and embarrass the team that embarrassed them in the Super Bowl
Jonâs Pick: Falcons
I donât think Atlanta is very good, but I think theyâll beat New England. The Patriots canât play defense with all their starters in, and this week theyâre missing Stephon Gilmore, and Eric Rowe. Thatâs really bad against a team that can score like the Falcons can. The Falcons should be able to take advantage of a defense that can neither generate a pass rush, nor cover receivers this Sunday night.
Tecmo Sim: Patriots 20 Falcons 7
Oh come ON!!!
Washington Redskins (3-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (5-1)Â Line: Eagles by 4.5. Total: 49
Ryanâs Pick: Eagles
The Eagles havenât given me a reason to doubt them. End of story.
Jonâs Pick: Eagles
I like the Redskins, and I think theyâre a better team than most people seem to think, but Philly is red hot, and they have a lot of offensive fire power. I think I would feel a lot differently if Norman were playing, but I think the Redskins have too many injuries to overcome this week. Theyâre almost lost to the 49ers, who are nowhere near as good as Philly. Itâs a divisional game, so you never know whatâll happen, but Iâm feeling pretty good about this pick.
Tecmo Sim: Eagles 38 Redskins 7
Tecmo is all aboard the Eagles hype train these days.
