Jamaica Ya Man! Travels to The Land of Bob Marley

Jamaica Ya Man! Travels to The Land of Bob Marley
Negril, with the longest, continuous stretch of white sand beach in Jamaica, is where the ganja cookie crumbles at a laid-back pace. My husband and I flew into Jamaica’s Montego Bay airport and drove to Negril, about two hours away. Adult-only hotels are tucked into rocky overlooks. Nudist beaches make suntans seamless. Smooth sands give silently beneath bare feet for miles and miles. The white velvet spreads into the ocean where fish dart around in the warm, clear waters. Music drifts down the beach like ganja smoke filling the lungs. Euphoric Negril is a playground of the true lover.
We stayed in the Charela Inn, that is situated right on the beach – one that the owner and hotelier Daniel Grizzle has zealously safeguarded.  Together with his wife (now deceased) the couple forced the Government to shelve plans to mine peat in the Great Morass area in the 1980s, which, according to scientists, would have ruined the legendary seven-mile beach and turned the area into a desert.
The Charela Inn itself is very attractive and in the center of all action. Each room has either a private patio or a private balcony. Our room overlooked the freshwater pool. The white sand and crystal-clear waters of Negril’s beach, which made it to underwater photographer Tanya Burnett-Palmer’s Top 10 List for CNN Travel, were just steps away.
The best snorkeling spots for beginners are offshore and not accessible from the beach. As someone who cannot swim, I was worried as I scrambled into Captain Mike’s glass-bottom boat. We zoomed to the middle of the [sea] where the live corals sway and Captain Mike led me gently into the waters. As we floated together, he pointed out brain corals and sea urchins. Angelfish, boxfish and goatfish nibbled at my fingers as they ate the breadcrumbs offered to them.
I could have snorkeled for hours enjoying the stunning underwater landscape made by the coral in a rainbow of colors. Some of the most common coral and reef species include green- and purple-base anemone, red cauliflower-, flowerpot-, star- and bubble coral.
Is Life a Jerk for the Vegetarian?
Much to the delight of my vegetarian husband, we discovered that Rastafarian food is Ital or vegetarian, with lots of green vegetables, no milk, no meat and no salt. Perfect at breakfast is ackee, a fruit that obligingly pops open when it is ripe. Ackee looks and tastes like bhurjee or soft scrambled eggs when cooked with onions and tomatoes. Collard greens look-alike callaloo, and doughnut look-alike “festival bread” or dumplings complete the breakfast.
An experience in color and flavor is created by combining bright orange squash, with yellow curried ackee, and yellow plantain.  Scallion, thyme, garlic, onion, pimento, tomato and curry powder are all common seasonings in Rastafarian food.
For meat-lovers, jerk-seasoned grilled chicken, pork and fish are served with a spicy sauce. Fish prepared escovitch-style is seasoned, fried and marinated with a peppery, vinegar-based dressing made colorful with julienned bell peppers, carrots and onions. Goat and other meats are curried too. Beans cooked with coconut milk and vegetables are served with rice. Standard sides include steamed plantains, yams, sweet potato and breadfruit.
Fruits are plentiful in this tropical paradise. We sampled a variety of mangoes at the local market.  In addition to a local one called “Julie” there were East Indian varieties. Sadly, a mango called “Bombay,” which we were told was the sweetest of them all, was not available. Nesberry, familiar to us as sapota or chickoo, also made a delightful snack.
Red Stripe beer, brewed in Jamaica, and rum are the alcoholic beverages of choice on the island. A number of souvenir shops offer rum tastings. “The locals have small shots of rum through out the day,” said the shop assistant at one, where we stopped for a sample. Soursop, a member of the sitaphal or custard apple family, added tang and smoothness to a cocktail with rum and coconut cream. We washed our day down with chilled coconut water sipped from the shell and sugarcane juice freshly squeezed by the roadside.
MONTEGO BAY
We drove back from Negril to Montego Bay where we stayed in “Polkerris,” a well-appointed and luxurious bed-and-breakfast, owned by the Bennetts.  Jeremy Bennett came to Jamaica in 1962, fell in love with the island and his partner Clarissa, whom he married in 1970. Needless to say, he never left. The Bennetts host guests in their beautiful country house, which is just a ten-minute stroll from the restaurants and clubs of the Gloucester Avenue Hip Strip, Doctor’s Cave Beach and the Aqua Sol Theme Park. As a guest put it, you really will feel like you are visiting your rich relatives in Jamaica.
Tale of the East Indian and the Rastafarian
The National Museum West in downtown Montego Bay is a treasure trove of information about the history and culture of Jamaica. With respect to the Rastafarian story however, the Museum tells an incomplete tale.
Classified as both a new religious- and social movement, the Rastafari culture developed in Jamaica during the 1930s when Ras (Chief) Tafari was crowned the King of Ethiopia. The Indian cultural influence on the Rastafarian movement is undeniable. A Kingston couple Laxmi Mansingh and Professor Ajai Mansingh outline the connection between the Rastas and the Indian culture in Home Away From Home: 150 years of Indian presence in Jamaica. The Rastas are vegetarian, family-loving people, who worship the Goddess Kali. They wear their hair like the sadhus of India (devotees of Lord Shiva) and like them, smoke marijuana, which the Rastas also call ganja.
The first Rasta, Leonard P. Howell, took the spiritual name “Gong Guru” or Gongunguru Maragh (Gangunguru Maharaj), say Stephen Davis and Helen Lee in their book The First Rasta: Leonard Howell and The Rise of Rastafarianism. The name Gongunguru is a combination of three Hindi words – gyan (wisdom), gun (virtue), and guru (teacher). Howell started a community called the “Pinnacle,” which was especially known for the cultivation of cannabis, which has religious significance for the Rastafarians.
youtube
In the early to mid-nineteenth century, the British recruited Indians – from the tribes in the hills of Eastern India and from the Central provinces of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh – into the sugar colonies. For the indentured black population, the new Indian laborers seemed kindred spirits; their struggles had the empathy of the Rasta. Solidarity was soon established between the communities, both of which were brutalized economically and politically. The Rastafarian culture appears to be a result of the synthesis of these cultural interactions.
The Jamaican dancehall music – which also reflects the merging of East Indian and West Indian influences – is based on themes of survival, suffering and struggle, that inner-city black Jamaicans face on a daily basis, albeit in a more aggressive idiom than the Rasta-inspired reggae. Songs such as “Suhani Gyul” bring a smile to one’s lips as they seek their inspiration from old Bollywood songs and produce a Chutney remix – Arti & Zoelah’s Wine Up on Me.
The Jamaican motto is: Out of Many, One People; unfortunately, both Indo-Jamaicans and Rastafarians downplay each other’s influence, as they look outside the borders of Jamaica towards their mother countries – India and Africa.
Interestingly Edwards, the black security guard outside Ivans Bar, who after careful consideration, decided we were Indian, went on to share that his great-grandfather was Indian.  He proceeded to tell us the story of Bahubali and so immersed was he in the whys and wherefores of the movie that when our taxi came Edwards was very disappointed to see his audience leave.
How to Speak like a Jamaican
English is the official language of Jamaica, but the majority speaks a form of English Creole or “Patois” (pr. patwa). Patois was derived out of a need to communicate between peoples who did not share a common language, the English masters and the slaves.
Here are standard greetings that can be heard around the island:
Waa gwaan? –     What’s going on?
Waddup”       –     What’s up?
Yo                 –      Hey!
One love       –      An expression of unity, love and respect for all. One love, my brudder. One love, Sistreen!
From the time Christopher Columbus first set foot on Jamaica on May 6th, 1494, the island has seen increasing traffic year after year. All-inclusive hotels attract tourists in large numbers. “Enjoy the white beaches and chilled attitude before the island is run over completely,” says our driver Phillips as we head back to the airport, “Fo you can be shore that is coming.”
Yaw so nice, Jamaica!

~Guha Shankar’s book “Imagining India(ns): Cultural Performances and Diaspora Politics in Jamaica” provided good insight.
~Phillips, our fabulous driver in Montego Bay, can meet you at the airport and drive you around.  He can be reached on Whatsapp at 1 (876) 447-0904.

against all odds
This will surely be a very long post. This post is about my experience during my board review, during those six months of survival with the books and reviewers (+ tips and techniques, I guess).
At first, even before my graduation, I already had review thoughts filling my head. Where to review? When? How? Manila was my first choice as a place to review though. Kasi nandoon yung main review center. Pero I preferred a place where it’s peaceful, the ambiance is cool, conducive to study and where my dad frequently travels--So, Davao it was. Almost an hour flight to my beloved hometown, and the place felt just like home.
I flew to Davao for my pre-review period. I needed to get away from distractions. But before that, some people asked me why do I have to leave so early, why do I have to go that month--I mean, what was wrong from leaving my comfort zone? What’s wrong with deciding to go? What was wrong with my decision?
“Mabaya lang siguro dih kautusan ha bay nila.”
“Dih siya marae mabayah pagdaakun.”
Those were just mere examples of their irritating comments. Funny, isn’t it? It only made me believed in myself. There were no regrets of flying to a newfound place that will serve as your temporary home. Not at all. I was even relieved because I can finally study and review well for the board exam.
Started with the hardest modules--Biochemistry and Pharmacognosy. I brought all my resources with me and thank God, because of such I managed to understand and made notes for my own comfort and ease. I wasted no time from the sayings of other people, I really didn’t care. They won’t be the ones taking the exam, so I just killed them with silence.
tips #0:
set a mindset, refresh your mind and be prepared.
It doesn’t take too much of your time and doesn’t take any less of your effort to have a mindset or goal such as “I WILL TOP THE BOARD EXAM.” “I AM GOING TO BE THE TOPNOTCHER.” “I WILL ACE THE EXAM” “FOR MY FAMILY, KAYA KO TO” because these positive thoughts will always be likely in your favor when the time comes. When everything is going downhill, when everything is difficult, these are your pillars of strength. Kasi you will double all your effort, you will do everything, and you will not just settle for anything less. Remember, having a strong mindset (tho at times you think it’s impossible to claim, but with God, it’s possible) will make you strong as well.
Be prepared with what comes with every decision you take, and in every step of the way. Review is not easy, yung four years nga sa college, mahirap na, what more sa review? Concise and a lot of information is squeezed into your brain in a short span of time. You have to be prepared in embracing the stress that comes with it, the unheard cries you make in the bathroom, the roller coaster of emotions, the weariness and tiredness every study period, and the sleepless and coffee-filled nights.
I really tried to be emotionally stable kahit physically tired ka na pero it was really no use. Mahirap to be THAT emotionally stable especially when you’re away from your parents and family and away from the foods you long to eat, pero you have to sacrifice. For that three letter word. I never let go of my spiritual bond with God cause I know on that day, no one will help me except Him. Even during my study breaks, talagang nafefeel ko na yung pagod. Those 10 minutes break was a lot quicker than I ever imagined. Nakakasuka na yung sinasabi nilang, “repetition is the key.” but never let go of that tip. Ironic. Bahala nang masuka, basta di susuko.
After that module, module 4 followed. I studied that for a month pero parang wala rin naretain (meron naman pero kaunti lang). Still Alhamdulillah.
tip #1:
choose a review center of your liking.
Sabi nila, di naman raw sa review center yung problema, nasa studyante yan, nasa disiplina ng student kung paano sya magrereview nang maayos. Yes, I couldn’t agree more with that. But I couldn’t disagree more na wala naman sa review center yung problema. Review centers have its own shortcomings and hidden disadvantages. They help you grow or help you wither. Either of the two, if you see it that way. Pick wisely. These centers mold you and set the atmosphere of your review. Imagine a center that don’t follow your suit. Medyo slow yung teaching method. Medyo fast paced ba. Puro sulat sa board. Puro presentation. Ikaw? Which complements your study methods, doon ka pumasok. I really recommend to enroll in a review center (+ 80% knowledge).
 tip #2:
make flashcards, make colorful notes, enjoy reviewing
These tools will help you all throughout the duration of your review. These will ease a bit of the difficulty you will be experiencing. Colorful notes will help you remember information and enjoy the rainbow colors popping out of your papers. It somewhat helps me calm down especially if it’s color-coded kasi you will feel na you’re playing with notes na parang hindi naman. No one takes away the creativity in you so let it flow.
tip #3:
be patient and learn as you go (never let any information passes you unnoticed)
Of course, expect that you wouldn’t absorb all the things you will be learning in one sitting, or in one study period, or in one discussion. We aren’t robots. Be patient with yourself. Be patient with the things around you (kasi nagiging sensitive tayo sa mga maliliit na bagay because of stress). Be patient with the information you will be learning kahit sabihin nating “parang di naman lalabas to sa boards”. Malayo pa ang umaga, take each step as you go. This isn’t a race of win or lose. This is a race of win and learn.
I wouldn’t deny that during my pre-review, I wasted some time din pero di naman yung grabe. We are just humans, we become lazy when we want to. Haha. I wasted one to two days for my breaks, a reward for disciplining myself. This is for our own good naman. At the end of the day, it is us who will be enjoying the fruits we sowed.
tip #4:
don’t be discouraged when everything doesn’t go as planned
At this point, you might question yourself. What went wrong? No. Nothing went wrong. You just have to believed in Him and trust in His plans. Some things are out of our hands anymore and beyond our capabilities to mend. We need Him and let Him do the work, just pray hard. Never ever give up because again remember your mindset and your motivation to leap forward.
tip #5:
make study schedules, follow it by heart
Study schedule is always helpful though at times lazy to follow. Take it from me. But at least, you are organized. Kahit di mo nafollow nang maayos, at least you tried. Once you are organized, everything will fall into place. It’s up to you what to study first--hardest to easiest or easiest to hardest. No one will judge you. This schedule will make you feel accomplished if you follow it. There is a sense of achievement especially when you finished the subjects in your sched.
tip #6:
study concepts by heart, don’t memorize questions and its answer (know when to memorize them)
When we are in a hurry, we tend to just memorize everything. Memorizing is only required for terms such as classifications, enumerations and the like. This isn’t applicable to everything. In board exams, analysis and familiarization are the keys to unlocking your license. And even acing it. Once you study the concepts by heart, it’s easy for you to comprehend the questions no matter how difficult it was formulated. Wink! During final coachings and preboard examinations, study them as well. The questions are outright formulated from previous examinations but is assured to be repeated again in the future examination, though not a hundred percent of it.
If you love your profession and your role in that field, it will be easy for you to claim that license. As long as you do not stop, you are never a failure. As long as you do not quit, you are never a loser. As long as you keep on pushing beyond your limits (and remembering you are human at the same time), you will succeed. Hold on to God’s promises and His strength. You are never alone in this journey. Your fight is His fight too.
May God bless you, whoever will be reading this and undergoing any future examinations, and may He bless the works of your hands.
Stay humble and hustle hard.

The Good Immigrant  (Nikesh Shukla, et. al, 2016)
The Good Immigrant is a collect of essays by BAME writers in the UK. For this project, at this point, I have found the following essays the most useful.
Namaste - Nikesh Shukla (p.1-9)
This essay was the most relevant to me personally since it was about the British Indian experience ( and I am half Indian myself). There main focus of this essay is the bastardisation of language and also the importance of ‘voices’.
In terms of language, he focuses around the bastardisation of Hindi and Indian culture through yoga, seeing ‘hippies wearing OM and Ganesha parachute pants, their hair in dreadlocks, bindis mark out the third eyes in the middle of their foreheads’. They all keep saying ‘Namaste’ and claim to channel all their different spiritual energies but there is no understanding. As Shukla says ‘Namaste...it just means hello’.
I think this is a very important point in terms of TCK’s because it highlights one of the many conflicts that they feel they feel when trying to assimilate into their second culture whilst also maintaining their first. He is carrying around his tiffin, wearing typically kurta kameez and yet all that people know of this Indian part of his culture are things they have stolen with no regard for origins. So it leaves a conflict as to how do you fit into society when the two aspects clash. It also highlights the distress and anger many ethnic kids feel about their cultures being somewhat ruined by outsiders.
When it comes to voices, this was an interesting topic from as personal perspective, which I will get to later, but also provided a good explanation of the multiple identities developed by TCK’s, especially as they grow up.
‘my mum had three voices. She had her white-people-phone voice, her Guju-lish talk-at-home voice and her relatives voice. I have three voices too. I talk in Guju-lish, my normal voice and white literary party... I’ve splintered into personas’
Especially in a class based society such as the UK, the way that you talk is paramount to your perception. Furthermore, how you speak ‘back home’ or amongst your other family members also determines how they perceive you (for example, the infamous London accent when speaking Hindi). It is interesting that Shukla is talking about these different voices as different personalities, as opposed to different parts of the same person (refer back to Guardian article and the idea of MASKS). What I think was interesting from a personal perspective is that I hadn’t even recognised that I had different voices because it is so innate to the habits of TCK and biracial children. Shukla describes how he is unsure which is his real voice. I think from a personal perspective, I am also unaware of what my actual voice is. Is it the voice I use most frequently or is it the voice that I use when I am most at ease? Even that is subject to change. It all comes back to the sense of splintered personality and he difficulties of trying to navigate that maze, which is different from person to person.
A Guide to Being Black - Varaidzo (p.10-21)
‘With most people, their race is perhaps the only aspect of their identity guaranteed from the moment of conception...For mixed-race children it’s a little more confusing. We don’t always come out looking like your parents, and often we’ll be racialised differently to them’.
This essay looks specifically at the adoption of black culture by those who are mixed and therefore have different experiences to the expected understanding of black culture. She opens this essay by saying how she wished someone had written a guide on how to be black since she was raised by a white mother and furthermore, unaware of race since her ‘first four years of life had not really included race. A better description was that race was so commonplace as to make it an obsolete issue’.I think this is particularly the case for kids that, on top of growing up in multi-ethnic households, also live in multi-ethnic backgrounds. In my case, race and the performance of its expectations was never an issue for me until I was in a majority white secondary school and suddenly you were subconsciously sorted into the white kids, the black kids, the Asian kids and even if there was a mix between the two, it was still within the boundaries of these cliques. I had never had to think about fitting in with Asian or white kids as up until now, no one cared if you were Asian or white, they cared what Pokemon cards you had or if you had seen the latest Pixar film.
One of the interesting metaphors that she uses in the essay is the colour story. When she was a child she was obsessed with the colours red and yellow, and she knew that red and yellow mixed to create orange. Therefore, ‘with on black parent and one white, I was the orange to my father’s red and my mother’s yellow, not quite either but rather something altogether new’. However, as she discusses this further, she also points out that ‘a drop of yellow in red paint won’t do much to change the colour, but one drop of red into yellow and the whole pot is tainted forever’. This shows very clearly to my mind, how there is a prevalence of some ethnicity over others when it comes to the fate of a TCK’s or biracial child's perceived nature. This is especially the case for mixed raced black kids. No matter what the other part of you is, if you look black you are classified as black, and this is often the case with those who have features that set them apart from their peers. In this case, the idea of voices and masks become more taxing because there is no way to be multiple when you, visually, are only considered as having one face. I, on the other hand, can be seen as both Celtic and Indian since I can be seen as either a fair skinned Indian or a normal Celtic person ( so in my case my identification comes from my hijab, which is a different situation).
By the end of this essay, Varaidzo realises that the existence of a rule book would do more harm than good, as it would homogenise the black population when in fact ‘there is no one way to be black. Our worst performance is entertaining the idea that there is’. That blackness is not bound by hairstyles, n-words or performing to a standard explicitly or implicitly set by the western world.
Shade - Salena Godden (p.181 - 197)
‘Your shade is not just about your heart and soul; your religion and spirituality, your elders and your history, your connection to a country, to geography and to a time and place. Your shade is an industry, your shade is a token, shade is a passport, shade is a cage and shade is a status. You tick: Other.’
This essay looks at the history of racism and immigration as a whole along with the remnants of imperialism but often touching on its effects on the modern day situation for the mixed-race children who are a result of it. As a result, not all of this essay was wholly useful, but there were passages that expressed how ultimately everything is down to the shade of your skin and how you adapt. How there is an irony of skin bleaching in Asian countries and yet tanning in the UK. ‘Wherever you live, wherever you are from, it seems it is all about shade’; How fair or dark you are and if you are int he middle, are you a darker person or a lighter person? Godden uses many metaphors in this essay, one of which is that of a Giant sorting through glass bottles at a recycling banks, your shade of glass determines your box. Yet, as Godden explains, ‘Most people aren’t simply one or the other...where are you putting the two toned people?’.
In fact, in this essay, Godden makes an emphatic argument that if anything, people with multiple ethnicities are not any less, ‘I am two shades and therefore not half anything, but whole, I am double caste. But half sounds shadier. Half is best because half of you means less... you are half a person’. Having said that, she does later on express how there is also a sense of a dream, ‘a grand idealism, that mixed-race people are the hope for change, the peace keepers, we are the people with an other understanding, with an invested interest in everyone being treated equally as we have a foot and a loyalty in many camps, with all shades.’ Ultimately, no matter how we are perceived, there is an expectation based in out shade and our ethnicity.
She also briefly mentions the concept of mixed race people, particularly adults, being chameleons. That we will adapt to take advantage of a situation, even if it is through distasteful means like minority quotas, positive discrimination and pandering to expectations. ‘...to chameleon, to camouflage, to make your shade darker or lighter. To morph into what is required or expected. whatever it takes to survive...to be heard...to get the job’.
Apart from these specific ones, many of the other essays were useful in terms of providing the context of racial experiences in the UK that would have contributed to others. There is also a common thread I have found in many of these essays about the presentation of different races and mixed race people in media and pop culture (whether this is the Chinese and east Asian community mentioned by Wei Ming Kam (p.84 -95 ) or the typecasting of Asians by Riz Ahmed (p. 159 - 168 )). This could also be another subject I could explore in my work as I have often believed that the experiences of mixed and ethnic children have existed in pop culture, but in the form of non mixed characters.

“I have seen it all, I did it all, I said it all, But I can’t remember it all…”
That’s how our Lifetime Achievement Winner, Moushumi Chatterjee defines her four-decade-old journey. “I don’t consider anyone bad. It’s the situation that makes people do things. You may hurt someone unintentionally. But you must never humiliate anyone,” says the actor who continues to throw up interesting performances. In 2014, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for the Bengali film Goynar Baksho and now the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award 2015. “I wish my father-in-law (the late musician/filmmaker Hemant Kumar) was present to see me receive this honour,” she says. In the recent hit Piku, she impressed with her brazen candour on sexuality. What’s more she was pitted against Amitabh Bachchan, her co-star in Basu Chatterjee’s quaint film Manzil (1979), remembered for its RD Burman number Rimjhim gire saawan. “Amitji possesses the same dedication. His sense of humour is intact,” she says. “Rimjhim gire was shot over two days in natural light and rain… from Colaba, VT to Marine Drive. I remember my eyeliner getting smudged! We kept having coffee to keep ourselves warm,” she reminisces.
Tumblr media
Child bride The reluctant star of Tarun Mazumdar’s Ballika Badhu (1965) never imagined that fiction would turn into the truth of her life. “I did Ballika Badhu when I was in the fifth standard. I got married when I was in the tenth,” recalls she. Young Indira (her real name) got engaged to‘guardian and neighbour’ Hemant Kumar’s son, Jayant Mukherjee (Babu). “I fell in love with Babu. He was the first man I came in touch with outside my family. In my dowry, came a dog, a doll’s house and a friend, my girl Friday,” she laughs.
The teen bride had already seen in Bengali films like Parineeta, Anindita and Anand Ashram. She came to Mumbai with husband Babu only to have film offers lined-up for her. Raj Khosla’s Kachche Dhaage was her first film, though Shakti Samanta’s Anuraag, where she played a visually-challenged girl released first in 1973. The next year saw her team up with Amitabh Bachchan in the thriller Benaam and opposite Rajesh Khanna in Humshakal. Her most notable performance was that of a rape survivor in Manoj Kumar’s Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974). “I was pregnant with my first child but Manojji took great care of me. I threw up with all the atta (flour) in my mouth. A duplicate blouse was placed on me, which was later flung aside for the scene.” She claims, “The song Hai hai yeh majboori was to be filmed on me. But I got pregnant. The phrase‘do takiya’ in the song matches my character Tulsi’s language not that of the sophisticated Zeenat Aman’s in the film.”
Her other successful films were Swarg Narak and Angoor with Sanjeev Kumar. The hat-trick of hits Maang Baro Sajna, Ghar Ek Mandir and Pet Pyaar Aur Paap put her in the big league in 1984. Later, she graduated to doing character roles in Ghayal, Ghar Parivaar and Udhaar Ki Zindagi. Ask Moushumi to analyse her appeal and she says self-effacingly, “I’ve a crooked nose. I’m slightly cock-eyed. Perhaps my smile, my laughter charmed. Also, I had a voluptuous figure. I was never skinny. Actually, sex-appeal lies in your face, your eyes. Having a great figure doesn’t matter.” She recalls how the late director Raj Khosla summed her up. “He said, “Moushumi’s childlike, not childish. She can be fun-loving like an eight-year-old and wise like a woman of 80.”
Will break, not bend In an industry, which has not been entirely kind to married actresses, Moushumi finds herself grateful. “Mahesh Bhatt once chided me for being ‘unprofessional’. He joked, ‘Every time your career is doing well, you get pregnant’. I replied, ‘My babies have added to my life’.’You can be a top star, a celebrity or even a queen but ultimately you need a family, a home.” What she does admit to is her ‘will break but not bend’ dictum, which became the reason of her walking out of big projects. “I was not the ambitious kind, who wanted work by hook or crook. I did films on my own terms. I even shot for some big banner films but left them after a few days because my ethics didn’t allow me to continue. I didn’t compromise my sanskar. They thought I was stubborn and crazy.”
Rumours of being ‘uncooperative’ plagued her career. “Some top heroes could not take my behaviour. They’d say, ‘You prefer to talk to the spot boy rather than have a cup of coffee with me. Do you think you’re Vyjayanthimala? I’d say, ‘No, I believe I’m Cleopatra’. Some, noticing my stance, would turn respectful, some indifferent.” She recalls the time when a senior actress gave her some ‘advice’. “She said, ‘Why don’t you open up? You rub them the wrong way. What’s the harm in having dinner with them on outdoors?’” She holds her heroes Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra in high regard. “Once Dharamji happened to see me at a particular party. He said, ‘Why have you come here? Go home right now!’ Rishi was helpful when I was pregnant and shooting for Zehreela Insaan. While Sanjeev Kumar loved to relax at my house, enjoying non-vegetarian food and watching films.”
My home, my world While showbiz wanted more of her, all she wanted was to rush back home. “I could switch from being Moushumi to Indu very easily. The minute pack-up was announced I wanted to run home to my husband. Even after Payal was born, I’d want to see Babu first.” In fact, the foundation of their bond, she says, was formed in those early years. She was a minor when her first daughter Payal was born. “My gynaecologist told me ‘a kid is having a kid’. When Payal was born, I didn’t have patience. She’d break my toys; I’d want to break hers.” She had Megha at 24 and didn’t work for two years as she was a weak child. “But the moment I thought of returning, I got four offers including Watan Ke Rakhwale, Aag Hi Aag and Ghayal,” says she.
Her ingenuousness remained intact even after motherhood and that’s why perhaps Dharmendra signed her for his production Ghayal. “I wasn’t interested. I suggested other heroines. But he said, ‘Kudiye, none can match your inocence. You can make the audience ghayal with your pain’.” She owes the liberty she enjoyed to her husband. “Babu was well off. He wasn’t living off me. He trusted me. My life has been an open book. Yes, he was possessive about certain things. Like once when I wore a sleeveless blouse, he didn’t like it. He said, ‘Have you forgotten to wear a blouse?’” she laughs.
Tumblr media
LINK-UPS & LIES Though she was a married actress, rumours of romantic liaisons didn’t spare her. She was linked to various heroes including the late Vinod Mehra and Farooque Sheikh and distributor Ramesh Sippy. With Vinod Mehra she did around 10 films including Anuraag, Us-Paar, Raftaar, Umar Qaid and Zindagi and that set the grapevine buzzing. “Vinod and Babu were close friends. We lived in the same building. So we often went out together. That gave rise to rumours.” She doesn’t deny her outgoing disposition. “I am a flirt. I can flirt even with a plant, with an animal. In fact, Shabana Azmi once said, ‘Shashi Kapoor and you can flirt with anyone from six to 60,” she titters. But she’s aware of the perils of a friendly disposition. “The way I show my warmth is misconstrued. Babu once told me, ‘You’re a heroine. People view you differently. Be careful’. But he also jokes that even on my death bed I will flirt with the doctor.”
On a serious note she explains, “I never reacted to rumours. Those close to me knew, where I was and with whom. My husband was with me. Yes, I committed mistakes.” She reflects, “I realised Moushumi Chatterjee had many admirers. There were people who said, ‘I love you’ and even those who said, ‘I want to marry you’. I couldn’t push them away or be rude. I gave them enough time and also to myself to understand that they were attracted to me and not in love with me. I respect them. I even respect their spouses who also went through a bad time.” She’s still a ‘romantic’ but her definition of love has changed. “Love is an illusion. It’s at best attraction and attachment. Gradually, you move on to other things, your emotions are channelised into your children, your work…”
Golden time Glamour is short-lived and what lasts is the halo of contentment. “I’ve seen actresses go haywire. I committed a lot of mistakes too. But once I realised them, I took a U turn and never looked back. Your lifestyle is important. If you abuse life, life will abuse you back. Actresses turn lonely because they don’t listen to the voice within.” She insists on being spiritual. “I’m a Hindu but I perform namaz. I visit the church. You can reach God by touching human beings. You come alone and go alone. I take pleasure in simple things, like cooking and being with my children. And of course getting into arguments with husband Jayant. “Babu merely listens, unless I provoke him. We share a great sense of humour. Like when I say, ‘Gala dukh raha hai (my throat is hurting)’, he shoots back, ‘Daba doon (shall I press it)?’”
Moushumi Chatterjee’s best works
Balika Badhu (1967)
An adolescent Moushumi was about endearing innocence as a child-bride in Tarun Majumdar’s Bengali drama. It was later remade in Hindi with Sachin Pilgaonkar and Rajni Sharma in the lead.
Parineeta (1969)
The many adaptations of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Parineeta include Moushumi’s take as a young woman’s unflinching devotion to her childhood sweetheart. This was directed by Ajoy Kar. It featured Samit Bhanja, Bijon Bhattacharya and Khagesh Chakravarti
Anuraag (1972)
A blind girl befriends a terminally ill child. The tragedy turns into a tale of hope and love in the Shakti Samanta directorial.
Kuchhe Dhaage (1973)
Moushumi’s village belle act was the perfect foil to the machismo dripping portrayals of Vinod Khanna and Kabir Bedi. Mere bachpan tu jaa… had an uncanny real-life echo to Moushumi’s own evolution.
    Zehreela Insaan (1974)
Best remembered for the chartbuster O Hansini and Rishi Kapoor’s emotional confusion. Moushumi matched his intensity with her innocence and ease.
Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974)
Manoj Kumar’s war cry against corruption featured Moushumi in a ghastly rape sequence. She was apparently pregnant then but carried off the scene with elan.
Benaam (1974)
Both Moushumi and Amitabh Bachchan share great chemistry as a married couple. Their paradise is lost once their son goes missing.
Manzil (1979)
Basu Chatterjee’s Manzil not only gave us the rain-drenched panorama of Mumbai’s bay-line but also the monsoon ode Rimjhim gire sawan filmed on Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi.
Swayamvar (1980)
Moushumi was all fire and sweet tantrums as Shashi Kapoor’s demanding ladylove in Swayamvar.
Pyaasa Saawan (1981)
Sexy and sentimental, Moushumi played the perfect wife in this melodrama. She won appreciation and sympathy as Jeetendra’s ailing wife here.
Angoor (1982)
Gulzar’s comedy of errors worked on a low-key sense of humour. Moushumi’s distrustful, daft, housewife act was perfect for the character.
Ghayal (1990)
As Sunny Deol’s grief-ridden sister-in-law in Ghayal, she provided a gravitas to her performance.
    Moushumi’s most-loved melodies
·        Sun ri pawan pawan puriya – Anuraag (1973)
·        Tere nainon ke main deep jalaaonga – Anuraag (1973)
·        hansini – Zehreela Insaan (1974)
·        Mehngai maar gayee – Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974)
·        Vado karo janam – Sabse Bada Rupaiya (1976)
·        Rimjhim gire sawan – Manzil (1979)
·        Wada nahin karte kisi se –  Prem Bandhan (1979)
·        Mausam pe jawani hai – Do Premee (1980)
·        Yun na rootho – Itni Si Baat (1981)
·        Megha re megha re – Pyaasa Sawan (1981)

Caveat:
These messages are for the Har Megiddo Army in order to fight a guerrilla spiritual warfare. Ha Shatan’s own the goats cannot and probably will never ever be able to hear the Truth, that is the Torah. And thus dispute and find fault in Scripture, twist it to their own damnation. And then also find error and fault in those who possess the Besorah with all understanding & knowledge. Some may have valid claims, because there are those out there who are Familiars, only to confuse with false doctrine, thus robbing these of their eternal life. If they are really the Chosen & Called they cannot be fooled by Wolves, instead only to observe what they say do and report on what they have witnessed to others as a warning.
Yahuah = the Father Abba Creator
Yahusha Ha Mashiach = Teacher Master Sovereign Savior
Yasharael = Yahceph & Yahudah Tribes = Chosen & Called = 1/3 who make it

This ordained from the foundation beginnings of what the Most High Yahuah established.
Yahudim is in Mitsrayim (land of bondage) as slaves brought by way of Yawan Javan Grecian (Roman) ships to slave & build the new Mitsrayim Roman Empire, thus now called UN. This is the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. These new Mitsrayim slaves are the Great Whore who brought forth the Apostate Hebrew Faith, these are the 1/3 who were able to escape in 70AD, hidden in Sudan, Kemet for 1500 years, now the vineyard’s grapes are ripe and ready to reap, then gleaning of the harvest grapes will commence thereafter. The other 1/3 killed by fire & then the other 1/3 killed by the sword. The 2nd Hekal in Yerushalayim now a complete sack both building & Hebrews, not one stone left.

‘Randamoozham’: India to produce its most expensive film ever
New Delhi (CNN)With a budget of $155 million, India is set to make the longest poem ever written into its most expensive film ever.
The figure may seem paltry by Hollywood standards, but it is new territory in India, where costs for its highest-budget movies barely skim $25 million.
Based on the Sanskrit epic the "Mahabharata," "Randamoozham" has surpassed previous record-breaking budgets like that of the upcoming Tamil-language sci-fi thriller "2.0," which cost $62 million to make and stars 65-year-old action superstar Rajinikanth. It has even beat the combined $65 million budget of the two-part blockbuster epic "Baahubali."
The film will be financed by B.R. Shetty, an entrepreneur based in the United Arab Emirates, who has high hopes for the film.
"The 'Mahabharata' is an epic of all epics," Shetty said in a statement. "I believe that this film will not only set global benchmarks, but also reposition India and its prowess in mythological storytelling. I am confident that this film will be adapted in over 100 languages and reach over 3 billion people across the world."
"Randamoozham" will be an adaptation of the novel of the same name by M.T. Vasudevan Nair, an award-winning Malayalam author, who will also script the film.
It will be ad-maker-turned-director V.A. Shrikumar Menon's second movie, with production expected to begin in September 2018. Set to be shot in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu, the two-part film will be released in 2020.
According to a press release, the cast and crew will "include some of the great names in world cinema including some Academy winners. The cast will have the best of talents from Indian cinema as well as some big names from Hollywood."

Behind the epic
At 1.8 million words and nearly 10 times the length of the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" combined, the "Mahabharata" is the longest poem ever written.
The text is believed to date back to between the 8th and 9th centuries BC and is traditionally understood to be written by Vyasa, a Hindu sage.
It tells the story of two sets of paternal cousins, the Pandava princes, whose father is the deceased King Pandu, and the Kauravas, sons of the blind King Dhritarashtra. The Pandavas and the Kauravas become rivals as they battle for the ancestral kingdom of Bharata.
Along with being an epic war narrative, the "Mahabharata" also contains philosophical and spiritual lessons.
"Randamoozham" will tell its story through the eyes of the second Pandava prince Bhima, tipped to be played by Keralan actor and producer Mohanlal.
The new Bollywood
For decades, the Hindi-film industry, or Bollywood, has stuck to a conventional plot of "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins back girl," interjected with sequences of song and dance.
It's a tried and tested formula but one that's becoming stale as Indian audiences grow accustomed to the high production of American films and television.
However, in recent years Bollywood's southern rivals, namely the Telugu film industry dubbed Tollywood, have been plowing in hefty funds and reaping the rewards.
Southern India's film industry made 831 films in 2012, according to the Film Federation of India.
The upcoming "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" is a mythological saga based on a traditional plot of good vs. evil and charts the journey of a prince who rediscovers his royal roots and sets out to reclaim his kingdom.
The first installment drew comparisons to "The Lord of the Rings" and the second has already made $74 million through satellite and screening rights ahead of its April 28 release, according to the Indian Express. It's good news for the visual effects (VFX) laden film that cost $38.7 million to make.
VFX sector blows up
For years, Indian films have been notorious for poor special effects, but with the rise of Hollywood tapping into Indian VFX companies for Oscar-winning productions like "The Jungle Book" and "Life of Pi" as well as HBO's "Game of Thrones," Indian filmmakers are now making use of the home advantage.
According to the KPMG FICCI Media and Entertainment Industry Report 2016, India has nearly 300 animation, 40 VFX and 85 game development studios with more than 15,000 employees between them.
Since 2010, the country's animation and VFX sector has nearly doubled in value from $367.3 million to $792 million in 2015.
