Out Of The Shadows and Into The Neon (Part 12)
“For the last time, Mikey, I’m not putting a cottage cheese monster in our comic!” Raph pulls the paper away from his little brother.
“But Raaaaaph!”
“No! It’s totally lame!”
“Not as lame as a big bug!”
“Hey, bugs are dangerous! Remember what your dad said about how the totally-unknown-evil-scientist-guy used mosquitos to make mutants!”
“That’s different!”
“IS NOT!”
“IS TOO!”
“YOU-!” Raph growls, and then closes his eyes. Mikey blinks, and scoots away as Raph times his breathing to calm down. He opens his eyes again and calmly says, “You’re just saying it’s different because you’re mad I’m not putting in the monster.”
Mikey crosses his arms and looks away. “I think it’s cool.”
“... Fine. But you gotta draw him!”
Mikey lights up. “Alright!”
Leo passes a page with a messy drawing of a New York street to Donnie, who starts sketching a vehicle (a sort of modified van) racing down the road. Their styles clash- Leo’s, while still being the uncoordinated style of a child, bears a striking resemblance to traditional Japanese painting styles. Donnie’s, however, shows that he clearly draws for Blueprints more often than he does for Fun. When he finishes up the sketch he passes the page to Raph who, with a skill that’s extremely impressive for a 10-year-old, adds in two figures in the little windshield and two crouched on top of the van. Finally Raph passes the page to Mikey, who gleefully and not-quite-as-skillfully adds in his monster.
“This can be a dream,” Leo says, watching Mikey work a white crayon down to naught but a nub. “And then we– I mean, they, can… um…”
“Fight alien robots?” Mikey looks at Leo with wide, watery eyes, clasping his hands together. “I had a dream we fought alien robots! Just like our dads!”
“Hey, I dreamt that too.” Donnie looks down and starts sketching. “And they all talked funny.”
“Talked stupid.” Raph leans over Donnie’s shoulder. “Lemme add the brain thing in the middle.”
“What about ninjas?” Leo looks through the papers, and holds up a drawing he did before they all agreed to make One Big Comic together. “Robot ninjas!”
Mikey gasps, eyes sparkling. “How about both?!”
“No way they can fight both!” Donnie looks at the one finished page, the four small totally-not-self-insert figures facing off against the cottage cheese monster. “That’s way too many bad guys!”
“Nuh-uh!” Mikey springs up and does a backflip, landing in a defensive stance. “They can totally do it!”
“The numbers are totally against them!” Donnie chews on the end of his pencil. “... Unless… we give them friends?”
Raph smirks. “You just wanna add your imaginary friend in.”
“Well she was in my dream about the alien robots anyway!”
“How about we can all add one friend for them in?” Leo flips the page with the robot ninja over and starts drawing. “I’m going to give them a wise sensei.”
“Fine. Then, I’m giving the coolest possible human friend ever.” Raph starts his own design. “If Auntie Cass and Uncle Casey were one person!”
“Then I’m adding in Leatherhead!” Mikey gets to work, the drawing coming easily, as he’s drawn the character dozens of times before.
Donnie just sticks his tongue out as he draws a red-haired human girl.
Mikey laughs and kicks his feet in the air. “This comic is gonna be awesome!”
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Draxum sits, stewing, as Angelo delicately places the last band-aid on his forehead. Angelo chuckles and taps the cartoon unicorn on it for good luck, then slides away.
“Maybe next time you will call instead of dropping into our sewers unannounced,” Splints says with barely-hidden amusement.
“Maybe next time you will not leave four rocket-powered skateboards blasting around your sewers!” Draxum snips back.
“Hey! Enough fighting for the day. Raphie’s taking a nap.” Raphie is, indeed, taking a nap on his giant beanbag, his mask turned backwards to cover his eyes. He has truly become A Dad.
“It would also have been nice to know my grandson is grounded from our chemistry lessons before I made my way here.” Draxum glares at Donald, ignoring Raphie’s demand for peace.
“Of course, let me just install a ‘Grounded Alert’ on your phone so you know every time he is unable to make it!” Donald says, tossing his arms up and rolling his eyes. He pauses, and holds his hand out. “I did mean that, actually, let me install that while you’re here.”
Draxum hands over his phone, and Donald gets to work. “I think it’s ridiculous you grounded your boys for being warriors.”
“For doing everything we told them not to,” Leon says, rubbing his eyes. “You know, no offense Barry, but I hate when you weigh in on our parenting decisions. … On second thought, full offense.”
Draxum shrugs, pursing his lips. Unbothered. “Perhaps I’d have less to say if you agreed on sending them to my school.”
“For the last time, it’s not happening! We dealt with enough weird mystic lunchroom situations when April went to school there!”
“I have it under control! Joseph is a fine young meat-man now!”
“Not! Happening!”
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Okay, now draw my character going like, h-wahhhhhh!” Mikey demonstrates with several flips, landing with a chop. “And then, HYAH!” He pretends to whip his ‘chuck chains around Raph’s legs and pull.
“I’m adding one or the other, not both!”
“Then add the flips! Nothing beats backflips.”
Donnie pauses coloring in the graffiti on the buildings. “Why do I feel like we’ve had this conversation before?”
Mikey shrugs. “Because… backflips are awesome?”
Leo passes Donnie another finished background page. “I get that a lot too. Feeling like we talked about or did something before.”
“Done something,” Donnie absently corrects. “It’s called Deja Vu. … Maybe it comes from whatever our Ninpos will be?”
“Wait, you think we’ll get those?” Raph passes his page to Mikey so Mikey can add the bad guys. “But we aren’t, you know. Blood.”
“But we are Hamato, aren’t we?” Donnie takes the time to draw in his added character, the human girl. He’s calling her Red. He adds yellow waves of power around her. “And it’s a spiritual thing. Not really a DNA thing.”
“How do you know?” Mikey licks a lollipop and uses it as ‘glue’ to stick the new page to the rest of them.
“... I guess I don’t.” Donnie sits up, putting his hands on his head. “I don’t! Guys… I’ve never looked at our DNA!”
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“They are warriors!”
“They’re kids!” Angelo puts his hands on his hips and uses his powers to rise above Draxum and glare down at him.
“They’re their father’s sons,” Draxum argues back. “Carrying on a great legacy of battle and triumph, from all sides of their creations! … Except the turtle part, I guess.”
Raphie sits up, twists his mask back around normally. “They’re not ‘their father’s sons’ in terms of power, Barry! We did what we did because you designed us to be weapons! They weren’t made for that!”
“We don’t know what they were made for!” Draxum pulls a stone out of his apron, and it levitates up and breaks apart. It shows a strand of DNA, unlike any DNA elsewhere in the world. “A decade has gone by and we still have yet to even begin to discover what substance created them! Perhaps this drive for battle is something natural, ingrained, and repressing it will only harm them!”
Donald smacks the stone onto the ground, much to Draxum’s shock and appall. “Or perhaps you are just as stuck in your, warring warrior scientist past, as we all worried you’d be!”
“It’s hard not to harken back to it when it seems to continue being relevant!”
“ENOUGH!” Splinter jumps up, breaking the eyelines of his family’s intense stares. All eyes follow him back down to the floor as he lands on his butt and hops onto his feet. “Draxum! If you want more time with your grandsons, just say so.”
Leon laughs. “Okay Pops, cute theory but– huh?”
Draxum stands, sagging with his eyes watering and lip quivering. He quickly wipes his eyes with a mystic vine. “They are trying to become warriors and I haven’t been a part of it yet. Even if I was… on the wrong side of things, as your four grew into your potentials, I was still there to see it happen.”
“But… Donnie has weekly lessons with you.” Donald checks the calendar in his wristpad.
“That is one grandson of four, and it is not battle.”
Angelo blinks, and lowers back to the ground. “Guys… he’s right. And maybe not just about him.” Angelo looks around. “When was the last time we shook things up? Had any one-on-one time with the boys who weren’t our own sons?”
Everyone considers– and slowly grows horrified to realize it’s all been Group Activities or Sons Only time for years now.
“No wonder they’re acting out!” Raphie hits his fist into his palm. “Remember what all those parenting books said? Enrichment, and wide social circles! We need to spend more time with our nephews doin’ stuff we don’t do as dads!” He side-eyes Draxum. “And, grandpas too, I guess.”
Draxum grins. Not without an edge to it. “Perhaps I could borrow the boys for a lesson on the basics of mystic weaponry?”
“Aw, Barry. It’s sweet that you care.” Angelo wraps an arm around Draxum’s shoulders– and then tightens it, smiling with dead eyes. “But if you take our boys near any armories, a visit from Dr. Delicate Touch will seem like a reprieve from pain.”
Draxum swallows as Angelo slips away. “Maybe just a visit to the Hidden City’s best sights, then. … The ones that are willing to welcome me.”
“And we can all plan something with our nephews.” Raphie looks around. “Like uh… Angelo can take Raph wall-painting!”
“And… Leon can take Mikey out for some basketball!” Angelo tosses a ball to his brother.
Leon watches it and smoothly transitions into a dribble. “And maybe Donald can take Leo out to an Observatory!”
“And Raph can take Donnie out to… hmm.” Donald pauses, a robotic arm scratching his head while he thinks.
“I can take Donnie out for some wrestling or something!” Raphie scoops Donald up and gives him a gentle noogie.
Draxum raises an eyebrow. “Are these not activities you can do as fathers as well as uncles?”
“I mean… we sort of stay in our lanes.” Leon tosses the basketball from hand to hand. “We’ve all got our thing.”
“Doesn’t sound so well-rounded to me,” Draxum mumbles.
“Barry? Again, no hay comentarios sobre cómo los criamos. Got it?”
“Not even slightly.”
“He means shut your mouth on our parenting skills. They’re for us to agonize over and question if we’re doing right, not you.” Raphie pulls out his phone and starts scrolling. “Maybe there’s some kinda scientist wrestler I can take Donnie to see!”
“And I know the perfect building for Raph to decorate with me!”
“I am so busting out my signed basketball to play with Mikey!”
“I bet I could take control of the observatory telescope to show Leo WHATEVER HE WANTS TO SEE IN SPACE!”
Splinter reaches up and pats Draxum on the calf. “Perhaps your visits are not all bad after all.”
Draxum frowns.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The four boys all stare down at the drawing.
“I dunno why I drew it.” Mikey sniffles. “Or why it’s so…”
Raph pulls Leo close as Leo’s breathing picks up. “Erase it, Mikey!”
“It doesn’t look like the stories they told us,” Donnie whispers. “But… it does?”
Raph covers Leo’s wide, unfocused eyes. “I said get rid of it!”
Mikey rolls up the drawing and fumbles around for something to destroy it with– finding a mystic nightlight candle. He taps it to light it up, and puts the paper over it.
The smoke only makes the twisting in their guts worse as Leo lets out a sob.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The whole living room goes quiet.
Silent.
No-one even breathes.
And then, again.
A soft, muffled sob.
All four fathers and both grandfathers burst into Mikey’s room.
The thin layer of smoke clears away almost instantly with the door open, but the mood does not. Raph is holding Leo protectively, pressing his older brother into his plastron. Mikey is wiping his eyes, shoving all his gray crayons and markers and colored pencils into a box to never be used again. Donnie is leaning over Raph and Leo, rubbing Leo’s back– and for some reason, his leg.
“What happened?” Leon goes to pick Leo up, but Raph won’t let go. So he picks both of them up at once.
“I didn’t mean it!” Mikey cries, hiccuping. “I-I was just drawing villains and-and I drew– I drew–”
“It didn’t look like the stories we heard but it-it was.” Donnie is still reaching up, putting pressure on Leo’s leg. He blinks, looking at his hand, and then takes it away with a confused expression.
“What stories? Has Auntie Cass been telling you scary stories again?” Raphie rubs both Leo’s and Raph’s shells, and they both start to relax. Leo raches up and pulls his dad into an almost choking hug.
Draxum takes in the abandoned gray crayons, the sniffling faces, and the reluctance to say the name. He bends down and picks up the comic, flipping through. His face falls with each page. “... Perhaps… you four were right about them being too young, to be warriors yet.”
“What?” Donald grabs the comic and flips through himself. He stops on one page, the green leaching out of his skin and leaving him almost gray. “Oh.”
“What?! What is–! … Oh, no.” Angelo looks at Mikey, and gets down to the ground to scoop his son and cradle him. “Hey. You guys know you have nothing to fear, right? We beat the big bads.”
Leo’s grip on Leon tightens. “I don’t want him to get you,” Leo whispers.
Leon’s eyes go wide, pupils shrinking. “Leo… he’s gone. We’ve talked about this, he’s gone. For good.”
Leo’s grip doesn’t relax. Leon feels tears on his neck as Leo pulls himself closer and starts to shake.
“Leon.” Raphie looks pale as Donald hops up the comic and points. “I don’t think it’s just about–”
“He got Pop-Pop,” Leo whispers. “He got Pop-Pop and he got me and I-I couldn’t protect anyone and–”
“It’s just a nightmare, Lee.” Leon pushes the comic away without looking at it– he can’t afford to right now. “It’s just a nightmare.”
“I can’t do it, I can’t save everyone–”
“I’ll save everyone.” Raph hugs his brother with a fierce growl. “I’ll save you and Donnie and Mikey and everyone else! Because we’re a team!”
“Dad.” Donnie pulls on Donald’s battleshell. “I-I think Leo is having a panic attack.”
“He– right, he– um, everyone clear out.” Donald picks Donnie up. “Let’s leave Leo to calm down. Uncle Raphie and Uncle Leon have this handled.”
“I’m sorry Leo,” Mikey whimpers as Angelo carries him out. “I promise I’ll never draw The Shredder again.”

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
What a fun question! Thank you for asking! I think I already answered an ask about favorite characters, but here's a list of some of my favorite media in no particular order 💜
1. Avatar the Last Airbender: If you didn't grow as a person if/when you watched atla I just don't know what to say to you. Watch it again I guess? Learn self-love and empathy and healthy coping tactics
2. Lord of the Rings, by Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien, especially Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring, Extended Version: Favorite movie. Nostalgia factor. Gandalf. Viggo Mortensen ruining all other men for me. Boromir being a Good Man. The soundtrack of this movie is Home to me.
3. The Goblin Wood, book by Hilari Bell: Friendship, magic, and angry, vengeful witches. Anti-colonialism. Great take on magic. Questioning dogma and learning how not to be a cop. A crotchety goblin named Cogswhallop who is my best friend.
3. Big Fish: Movie with Albert Finney, Ewan Mcgregor, and Marion Cotillard my beloved. Whimsical, heartwarming, and profoundly bittersweet story about people learning to communicate and share in each other's lives. I really just fucking love this movie.
4. ⭐ A Silent Voice: Japanese animated movie about a former bully learning to not hate himself, a deaf girl learning self-worth, and a lot of people learning to be friends. Fucking stunning visuals and music. Another profoundly bittersweet one with a happy ending, and one I wish I'd seen earlier in my life. Content warning: two suicide attempts.
5. Mo Dao Zu Shi, by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: Chinese web novel with several adaptations, about a lot of fascinating topics with oceans of nuance because MXTX is a genius tbh, but largely about questioning convention and doing the right thing, the different ways in which people can love, the meanings of bravery, and some zombies. I also love her novel Tian Guan Ci Fu but have to analyze the themes a little more before I can confidently talk about what it means? It's fucking incredible though (and like twice as long lol)
6. No. 6, by Atsuko Asano: Japanese web novel with a manga and anime adaptation (manga is the best): honestly just a fun time about destroying The System with gay love and bees. Deuteragonist is an edgy dumbass who lived in a cave, blows up government vehicles, and quotes too much Shakespeare. To this day I am endlessly entertained by Nezumi.
7. The Kingkiller Chronicles, by Patrick Rothfuss: Book series comprising The Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear. Someday will include the final book, Doors of Stone. Epic fantasy story about a bard-rogue-wizard with delusions of grandeur giving his memoir after all the damage he's caused. Involves the COOLEST magic systems in one world, does an amazing job of establishing a truly low-fantasy-feeling but simultaneously deeply mystical environment, and has exactly the kind of compelling eccentricity that I love in characters. Beautifully poetic prose.
8. Dragon Age: rpg video game series about a series of Unfortunate World Events. You play a different character in each game, the protagonist at the center of one catastrophe or another, and they all tie in beautifully in the overall world story progression. The characters you meet are multidimensional and SO worth analyzing, because they're all fascinating and flawed people (except Varric Tethras, who is Perfect and The Love of my Life (my wife knows and accepts this)).
9. ⭐ Gates of Fire, by Steven Pressfield: Okay, FUCK THIS BOOK for being about the battle of Thermopylae where you know EXACTLY how that ended for the defending army and MAKING YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTERS ANYWAY. Insanely well-researched historical fiction. Sympathetic to the subject and emotionally and socially insightful to a devastating degree. The best representation of the camaraderie and friendship in warrior culture without all the awful macho bullshit we've come to expect and loathe. They really ask the question "what is the opposite of fear" and come to the answer "love." I have broken down sobbing while reading a story three times in my life, and TWO of those times were from this book. Seriously, fuck this book. I will never write half as well as Steven Pressfield.
10. ⭐ It's Such a Beautiful Day, by Don Hertzfeldt: Remember the animation show on YouTube, that absurdist hand-drawn animation with the robots? Yeah that guy made a whole emotionally gutting, bittersweet movie about the nature of life and coming to terms with the end of it. Intergenerational trauma, chronic illness, and a lot of introspection. Beautifully paced storytelling. This is an Important Movie. It's not immediately stylistically accessible to everyone, but seriously, open your heart and branch out. This movie made me a little more whole.
If I had to pick three of these to shove in people's faces, it would be the starred and red ones lol. Not enough people know about them or have taken the time to appreciate them.

Wednesday 10/2 (Day 17)
Before heading out to Shoreline, since I had missed breakfast, I stopped at Bruno's and actually bought food there for once. Swiss mushroom burger, and it was great. Then I drove out to Shoreline and knocked on all of the office doors, but Mom wasn't around, so I waited around a bit till someone with a radio showed up and I asked him to radio for Mom.
A couple minutes later, one of the oscillators pulled up and deposited two passengers before heading out. The folks he dropped off were walking the lines earlier but needed to bow out - the guy had gotten a tattoo yesterday "from Olaf, on the Ranch." he pointed at one of the fleet vehicles and asked if I thought he could use it to jump his car. I said I wasn't sure but if he had cables I could help out - which he did, and I did.
Then King Louie showed up to drive me out to the line. I apologized for being late and he said he was glad I came out anyway instead of taking the whole day off; we need every able-bodied person we can get, and he's been watching me and I seem more able than average. Which was nice to hear from an authority figure. Though, the compliment might only be because I always laugh at his jokes during roll call 😄
He dropped me off on Knots' line and the rest of the workday was uneventful. We picked up moop, took our afternoon break, picked up more moop, took morale break, picked up more moop, and then got on the busses to go back to Shoreline.
At dinner, I was talking about my top surgery, and showed some people the surgery video my surgeon posted on Snapchat. Gypsy Fire was absolutely enthralled, and I sent the link around to some folks. After dinner I joined a small group in one of the Estates trailers watching a movie, then bedtime!
Thursday 10/3 (Day 18)
Thursday morning I finally made a roll-call response that worked out correctly:
King Louie: Diesel?
Me: I'm a Duke out here looking for my -
King Louie: Dutchie?
And folks laughed.
The rest of the day was Normal. Pick up moop. Listen to weird music. Pick up moop. Throw dirt clods at eachother. Pick up moop. Sit in the shade. Pick up moop. Compare our coolest finds. Pick up moop. Get on the busses. Pick up moop. Chat with the person next to you. Pick up moop.
After the workday, shower, dinner, my lil crew went to the Saloon to play Frick Frack Blackjack. Amber, one of the bartenders, hosts it. she showed up to the saloon with a bag full of knickknacks frick frack. each hand, you and the dealer negotiate for what you're putting up and what you're playing for. then it's a regular hand of blackjack. I only played one hand and I lost three pins that we're pretty cool objectively but I didn't particularly care for.
I also spent time in the bar talking to Shouting and Deadliest Threesome - this really rad couple who also mostly walks Knots' line. they told me some stories about working gate and Deadliest lent me a knife so I could join the long tradition of vandalizing the bar top with my playa name.
I learned 3 things about Gate worth sharing:
1. basically what we already know: make sure the truck is packed in such a way that there is a path to the back. it doesn't have to be a path on the floor or anything, just enough space along the top of everything that someone can monkey in and clamber over everything to search for stowaways. Gate searches are vibes-based, so they go faster if your friendly and open and offer a cold NA beverage. it's also a nice tradition to offer something as a donation to the black hole bar
2. Shouting gave an example of what she says when asking people about contraband. "is there anything else I should know about? stowaways, Astro turf, weapons, fireworks, beer to give away, gremlins...?" he said he tries to strike a balance between making people feel at ease with jokes and intimidating them into telling the truth.
3. All the fireworks that they confiscate and "dispose of properly "? in this context, dispose of means set them off at the gate parade.
The other activity at the bar tonight was a stitching bitch posted by permission granted. many people pass through to stitch some patches onto their clothes. permission granted also taught me how to make "yarn" out of plastic bags, enabling more of my trash wording behavior. I told her my girlfriends would be mad at her (joking) and she said she's not sorry.
Friday 10/4 (Day 19)
Today during the morning meeting we got an inspirational speech about how tough the .002% moop standard we're held to is. It included the line "companies are allowed more rat shit in their canned goods than we are moop on the playa."
At 11:15 I got a ride back to Shoreline from Honor so that I could be in a place with wifi to do a video interview. A full time job opened up at Teen Feed that fits my skills and interests, and I'm really excited about the position. I did the interview from my car because the wind was too high. I feel like it went well, and it went over by 20 minutes which seems like a good sign.
When I was done, the rest of the resto crew had returned to Shoreline to "free range moop" the area. Shoreline is the base for DPW immediately pre- and post- event. During the event, it's called "JOC" and is the place where law enforcement sets up. The moop there was primarily wood chips, and also lots of droplets of what felt like foam - probably spray insulation from the temporary trailers.
At around 2:30, DA called us all over and said the visibility was too bad to continue for the day. The high winds kick up a bunch of dust and make it difficult to see beyond a few feet in front of you. This is dangerous when you've got over a hundred workers to account for. We don't want to leave anyone out on the playa. Tomorrow is the last day of work before the inspection, and DA told us to take the time to rest. Starchild jumped in and said "There's this phenomenon which happens sometimes, where, when we get time off, paradoxically fewer people show up to work the next day" and asked us to please not let that happen this time.
I wanted to get cake mix and candles at the Empire store, so after getting back to Gerlach I made the rounds and offered to get things for anyone else who wanted stuff that isn't available in Gerlach. I ended up with a shopping list that I needed to write down: rolling papers, ice cream, vitamins, nitrous, "a goddamn vegetable", a vape, and of course the cake and candles I went for. This wasn't the first errand of this kind I made. Empire is only about 10 minutes away from Gerlach by car, but less than half of the folks staying in Gerlach have access to a car, it seems. It's different on the Ranch, where people are staying in mostly their own trailers/RVs.
Which brings me to my evening plans! Right after dinner, a few of us headed out to Fly Ranch (not the same as The Ranch, I'm getting there) for the "staff soak." There's a hot spring at Fly Ranch, which is usually open for staff use 7pm - 9pm on Wednesdays and Sundays during the season. This week the Wednesday one was moved to Friday instead, because it's "Friends and Family Weekend" at Fly Ranch. No one ever explained to us what that actually meant, but functionally what it meant for us was that there were a bunch more people at the soak than usual, and they were energetic and clean and talking about their big boy jobs and the vibes were, uh, off. But the water was hot and the stars were beautiful and it was still a really nice time.
But then our lil squad left and headed for The Ranch. If you drive ~10 min past the entrance for the Fly Ranch hot spring, there's another entrance to a property that folks call The Ranch. Sorry for all of the buildup; It's basically just a trailer yard. During pre- and post- season, if you have your own RV, that's where you park it. They have their own common house, commissary, and bar. It's also the home of the Burning Man Trailers (BMTs). If you are a DPW Manager without your own RV you're likely to be assigned one of these. Couples, also, often get placed in them. This year was apparently abnormal, as over half of the resto workforce was staying at The Ranch instead of in Gerlach.
As for my evening - it was nice & uneventful. Made pasta, ate candy, played "10 Drunk Cigarettes" on repeat, and gossiped.
Saturday 10/5 (Day 20)
I was late again, on my last day. I woke up at 11:30 and checked my phone - it had updated overnight.
I threw some granola bars in my backpack and drove straight out to Shoreline. Mom was still in her office and radioed for someone to come get me and take me out to the lines.
As it was the last day, our goal was to finish at least a first pass of everywhere. this meant we spent most of the time on the outskirts of the city, between the end of the city grid and the border of the trash fence.
We were visited again by cyber truck guy. I learned his handle: EWU Crew. This time he tried to get as close to us as possible. At some point he was even driving 50 ft in front of us, in the areas we were about to walk through. Our rangers and medics did a pretty good job of driving along beside him and blocking sightlines. People were pretty agitated about it, but managed to keep it together and not create any dramatic conflict. I'll keep my eyes out on the guy's channel, but I don’t think he got any good footage so there might not be anything to post.
After morale, we usually only walk one block. But this time, we kept rolling up to the end of the block but right before we got there the busses and fluffer trucks would start up and pull forward to the next marker. This was okay - everyone knew that it was our last opportunity to sweep the playa before inspection day on Monday. We ran over time by about a half hour and ended up back on the busses around 5.
The rest of the night was a delight. I used that cake mix from earlier and mixed in some peanut butter & chocolate chips to make a cake for Riley’s birthday. I thought she was turning 25 so I had to do some candle surgery to make it say 24 instead.
I gave several stick n pokes at the saloon.
We snuck into the covid trailer at The Estates and pushed the beds together to make one giant bed for wrestling matches. I was handily beaten once by a chick who participates regularly in a Queer fight night in Oakland, and my other match ended in a stalemate.
As it goes in this sort of environment, I made really intense friendships and it was bittersweet to be celebrating the last night together. not everyone was staying for the inspection on Monday, so we knew it was the last hurrah.
Sunday 10/6 (Day 21)
We were woken up by a knock from housing and an exhausted “you’re not supposed to be in here”
The rest of the day felt like the last day of summer camp. Lots of goodbyes. Some stick-n-pokes. Some other activities. A beautiful sunset. I wrote some, but I’m going to save that for another time and place. I went to bed by midnight, prepped and ready for the BLM inspection Monday morning.

The multi-million dollar Bugatti Chiron SS 300+ reaches 60 mph in approximately 2.4 seconds. Which exotic car maker produces the most vehicles? Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and McLaren all now manufacture thousands of vehicles per year each. Shared by Joe fan Paul Korn -
I wrote this a few years ago, and hoped I could share it here.
Prepare for the sadness.
Pictured below you will find a photo of a GI Joe vehicle known as the APC, or Amphibious Personnel Carrier. This thing was the coolest thing ever to 9-yr old me, and I got one in about 1984 or so. The thing that was SO COOL about this thing is that it carried 28 figures, and it FLOATED.
At this point in time, I had amassed quite the collection of figures and accessories. There were even blister packs available for sale in those days that consisted of small weapons, figure bases, backpacks etc. Often I would refrain from buying another figure, and instead, prudently purchase these ancillary items. It’s the kid equivalent of buying laundry soap instead of a new shirt. #responsible
Anyway, I would load up each of my 28 FAVORITE figures with their respective backpacks and weapons (and in some cases, animal sidekicks - looking at you, Spirit and Freedom), and arrange them for battle transport within the APC. Once on site, I’d remove the top of the APC and order my troops to their battle positions, usually near my dresser, or if outside, a cool looking rock.
When we moved from our home in 1985, we lived for a bit in a house on 53rd street in Lawton. Just down from this house was a creek that I would often visit as it was generally dry. I’d go hang out under the bridge and read all of the misspelled graffiti (apparently someone was really into satin) or just literally kick rocks.
So one time for the stretch of several days, it rained. And rained. A few days later, after the ground had largely dried, the rushing water remained. 10 year old me decided that this was the perfect time to transport the troops to their next adventure. It had been a while since their last deployment, and I just knew they were getting antsy for some action. It was at this time that I decided that only the elite of the elite would be included on this particular raid, so pile in Snake Eyes, Hawk, Scarlett, Duke, and Gung-Ho! This is the big show! Snow Job? Barbecue? Footloose? Nah fellas, y’all are staying here and patrolling under my bed with y’alls second rate selves.
The 29 of us made it to the creek, which was running deceptively quick, but nothing our heroes couldn’t handle. I positioned the APC on the bank, and began to formulate the battle plan in my head, as I’d not really considered much other than getting these guys loaded and somehow, into. that. water. With a light push, the APC was afloat near the bank, and headed with the current as I walked alongside, quiet-shouting conversations between those brave men and women inside the vehicle.
Hey, this thing is moving kinda fast. In all honesty, I had plenty of time to retrieve it from the water and save my men, but water takes a direct route which sometimes isn’t possible for an accompanying and uncoordinated ginger kid attempting to follow the bank line. In those few seconds necessary for me to navigate the terrain, the APC floated into war like a jet-propelled Viking ship bound for Valhalla, and I was powerless to stop it.
I remember standing there for several minutes after it disappeared from view. I turned and walked back home, dejected. I’ve never been a crier, but I can definitely feel the remnants of that gut punch to this day, made even worse returning to a B Team of GI No-names that have now become your starting lineup. On top of that, some schmuck down the creek scooped up my squad on the luckiest day of his stupid life.
Pre-teen trauma, I’ve lived it.
