One incense stick is burnt/lit for Vishnu and Lakshmi. In front of Shiva 3 sticks to burn made up of tulsi and other flowers which are not offered to him. Five incense are offered to lord Ganesha and goddess Durga. Six incense is offered to Kartikeya. For family deity or devata to burn 8 incense sticks. Three sticks burn for Ayyappa. Eight incense sticks burn for the goddess Kali.
Burning of one incense indicates the unity that the whole is as one. Lighting of one incense represented Buddha.
