Week 5 (22.04.16) Questions

GROWTH

Week 5 of our drama ensemble may have been the best week thus far. We have been doing our ensemble work without slacking off, and working as a team. Throughout the week, we’ve been brainstorming ideas for scenes with the help of prompts from lesson goals.

For example, on Wednesday, we focused on creating the symbol on a piece of technology using our bodies. After the class brainstorm on a list of technology we could use, we chose headphones, and we created a scene based on the effect on headphones and briefly discussed it.

We also created about two more scenes including a dating scene, showing how fake profiles and pedophiles are found over social media but are hidden from our view. That scene was created and rehearsed in the same day.

Including the three scenes created today, we have come up with a list of 8 scenes we could do in our performance, definitely taking at least 10 minutes, the minimum length of the criterion.

So overall, our group ensemble has grown to create scenes and generally work on our play more than the other weeks. We have also grown to do the work together ourselves, instead of most of the discussion and creation by one member or by the teacher.

SUCCESS

Our group had a lot of successes this week as mentioned before. In further detail and to clarify, here are the successes.

Creation of three scenes – We had created three different scenes: 

A “Hacked” scene, showing how the wrong things get spread over social media causing problems, 

A “Headphones” scene, showing the negative effect of social media and also showcasing how we could show technology using ourselves, and, mentioned above, 

A “Dating” scene, where pedophiles, stalkers, and fake profiles are lurking around social media. 

We created these three scenes in the same week, one for each day. That’s an achievement. We discussed all three, however, we only rehearsed and scripted one of them.

Completion of scenes – Adding the total from this week, we have come up with a list of 8 scenes to perform in our play. They are:

The Web Scene – Introduction, Rehearsed

Teacher Scene – Discussed plot

Headphone Scene – Discussed plot, Unsure of inclusion

Hacked Scene – Discussed plot, Unsure of inclusion

Cyber-bullying – Not created plot

Socialising Scene – Not created plot

Dating Scene – Rehearsed

Angel vs. Devil Scene – Ending, Rehearsed

(Possible) With/Without Social Media – Not yet discussed (My idea I haven’t shared yet)

We have finalised a number of scenes enough for the required minimum length of the play. This means we don’t have to come up with any more scenes.

Much use of playmaking techniques – We rehearsed the dating scene twice, the first was on the same day upon creation. And of course we scripted scenes. If we can script and rehearse as quick as this, we could do the rest of the scenes in time. We also received feedback to refine our play.

Productive Working Method – Our group has acquired a good way of working, compared to other weeks. Even if we didn’t notice it, we have definitely made ourselves work without being forced to. Earlier weeks, we just slacked off until the teacher talked to us (sorry). 

Also, ideas and discussion were pitched in from all members of the group instead of one member like before, or from the teacher. We seem cool with decisions too, and we don’t see to fight that often. 

And each of the three lessons, at least one of our group members were not here, and we managed to do a lot anyway.

PROBLEMS

We have minor problems that can be fixed with the confirmation of the group. 

One of them is, looking at our scenes, there are more scenes showing the negative aspects of social media than the positive, 4 negative, 3 positive, 2 neutral. We can try to include more of the positive vibe in the neutral scenes. 

Another problem is that some of our scenes don’t even have a plot yet, and half of our scenes aren’t scripted or rehearsed yet, but if we keep up the rate from this week, we can do it.

PLAYMAKING TECHNIQUES

We used 6 playmaking techniques to some degree, the most we have ever done, and we are proud of that.

Brainstorming – As a class, we brainstormed a few ideas on what we could include in our play. As a group, we brainstormed from the class brainstorm on the scenes we could create from that.

Improvising – Our first rehearsal for the “Dating” scene had no script. We did not practice what we had discussed, and we rehearsed it better than we thought it would be.

Scripting – Especially for the “Dating” scene, we were able to create a mental script for the scene from discussion, and we rehearsed the scene from the script.

Editing – During many several practices of the scene, we have edited a lot of the script and the plot to make it even better.

Rehearsing – We have rehearsed twice for the “Dating” scene. The first time, we did not practice beforehand, and we rehearsed the scene to the teacher. The second time was performed in front of the whole class.

Refining – After the second rehearsal, the teacher gave us feedback for us to implement into our acting. For example, I had to be creepier to be seen as a pedophile and to include tension. We discussed that I had to touch the leg, which refined our play.

DRAMATIC ELEMENTS

I’m actually unsure of what dramatic elements we have used this week in our rehearsal of the “Dating” scene.

Maybe our acting wasn’t good enough to include dramatic elements. Our scene could definitely include tension if we incorporated the feedback earlier.

GOALS FOR NEXT WEEK

Our main goals next week is to fix our problems, and get every scene scripted. Also, we need to complete rehearsing at least one new scene we haven’t rehearsed yet so we aren’t behind. It would be great if we do two, but we need to focus on scripting all eight/nine scenes first.

Self Realisation...

It has taken me almost 9 months, but I have FINALLY had the AH-HA! moment.

Consoling a somewhat inconsolable baby tonight, the tears came flooding as I realised that she actually needed me.

I think I may have just had that "penny dropping" moment, where I now understand what this parenting thing is all about.

Sure she has needed me before now; feeding; changing; refereeing between her and the dog; comforting; nursing; parenting. But something tonight was different.

She has always been somewhat of a difficult baby, and although head strong, wouldn’t be fazed either way about which parent/person/family member/family pet attended to her, for as long as she received the desired attention she was fine.

She actually needed ME. Just me. Not my husband, not our 4 legged fur baby, me.

To say being overcome with emotion I feel is an overused term, yet something inside of me awakened and shed a whole new light on what it really means to me to be a parent.

Hell! I can even say I now truly understand why OTHER people have a desire for multiple children. Footnote here - specifically OTHER people, this shop is shut!

As I sat with the eventual consoled baby peaceful in my arms, I myself wept like the babe herself. For I had not believed, honestly, 100%, unequivocally believed that the parenting path which I had chosen was really the right fit for me. I mean sure, I had managed to keep her alive and breathing and away from harm for all this time, yet was always second guessing myself, questioning if she was going to grow to resent me - especially on the days where no matter what I did, it was useless, I was useless.

I think I’ve got it now, a bit slow on the old uptake, but I got there. Through a box of tissues, a baby wipes for panda mascara, but I got there.

I will live to eat these words - but I got this! #igotthis
