2 Cents 4 Collectors

Armory week is coming up. Whether you’re a first time buyer or just adding a little something to your existing art collection, it’s always good to review your collection goals.  

A sign of a good collection is that the sum is greater than the parts. Your collection should have more value all together than the individual pieces combined.  A smart collector has a good eye for talent or they trust art professionals to guide them. I suggest you to be as specific as possible about your collection goals!  Select your preferred region, type of art, time period. 

Some of the most prized private art collections have very clear goals and collection strategy.  French billionaire businessman, Francois Pinault’s goal is to open a new museum with his collection of contemporary blockbusters and to share it with as many people as possible.   Eli Broad of Los Angeles collects post war contemporary artists. His goal also is to make his works available to the greater public, his Broad Art Foundation lends artworks to over 500 institutions. 

In New York, The Goldman Properties Arts Program, founded by the late Tony Goldman, a visionary entrepreneur, “searches out new and emerging artists of the Street Art genre and beyond, fostering careers and developing connections between art and public space.”

If you want to collect purely for investment purposes, then I would suggest you keep stored away in a dark temperature controlled place.   Erza and David Nahmad’s art collection values up to 3 billion dollars with the “strategy: make a profit.  Buy a lot of art, hold it in a warehouse for awhile, and then sell it for a ton more than they paid for it.”

Ok, we’re not all billionaires and cannot set such lofty goals, but the same principle applies.  Be as specific as possible, there’s a fine line between being a collector and a hoarder 🤭  I, personally, have to live with my art collection.  I recently started amassing a print/multiples collection.  I primarily collect artists I’ve met in person, in editions of number 3 and 17 and mostly importantly I must absolutely 💛 it.  

I know what you’re going to say... “But what if I don’t know what I 💛?”  Great question!! My answer is, “SEND US AN MESSAGE! WE CAN HELP!!!”  We will help you articulate what you want and how to acquire it.  Don’t be too shy to ask for help. It’s our job, and we are very very nice. ☺️

Hello to people who are trying to reach me but unfortunately I'm not interested in answering your topic #femaleartist and #femalething movement anymore. I have been puking since hundred of people started asking me all of sudden to participate #femaleartexhibition and interview about #femalestreetartist. Yes I was only a girl in the early #streetart #graffiti era and everyone else had dicks, sure I love #pussypower because I own it, but Im not pushing and selling myself professionally as #womanartist. I am individual #artist since I was little child, when dick or vagina didn't matter. Personally I had depressing childhood in Tokyo that all girls in my class ignored me for full semesters, just because I was cute eccentric, good at playing ball games with boys, riding cool black bike not the pinky one, chilling with live crocodile not Barbie doll, stupid reasons. Group of girls were scary trauma to me. Making art was and still is great escape from such everyday's dark clouds. I deeply support women who are having very difficult situation in our society, I've seen they are really fucked up but I am not fighting against opposite sex. I feel everyone else like you should stop talk about gender issue like cool fashion. There must be more unique theme to research and present. I never got a wall in his famed Wynwood Garden from Tony Goldman. But he gave me something far more valuable, his respect. He told me that the first time I met him on Prince Street. He watched me counsel Alex, a young kid who hung with us on Prince Street about being rude to people. I had no idea who he was, when he expressed that he liked and respected what he had just heard me say. Later, someone said, "do you know who that was, Tony Goldman." I next ran into him in Miami...
