It was the colors that piqued my interest. Those pure, liquid colors. Otherworldly intense. The catalogue doesn't (and print technology cannot) capture the colors of the actual work, and that means that a skeptical viewer of the exhibit might be willing to mollify his initial harsh feelings where a viewer only of the book would see only dullness, in color and content. I don't like this work but I don't hate it. Oh, the essays in the book cite art-historical and personal references, so much depth. But I don't see the work holding all that weight. What references there are to other artists, to AIDS, seem weak and unimportant.
