I find the process or this artwork particularly interesting. The artist, Tony Orrico, created this piece by folding a large sheet of foam like material and biting along the seem he has created to permanently alter the sheet. The work is indexical in nature as it leaves the trace of his actions. I find the video performance very interesting too as the artist becomes extremely tired over time. The monotonous and taxing activity takes its toll on the artist. The positions he finds himself in clearly depict his struggle - I think that the video itself is indexical.

Task: create a drawing machine to make 3 sets of drawings: circle, triangle, square.
Tony Orrico -
I find Tony Orricos' "Penwald Drawings" to be his most interesting and the most relevant to the drawing machines task, this is because he essentially uses his body as a machine to create these really intricate swirly patterns. This way of working is really similar to the kinesthetic pieces we did last unit, however instead of just using the feeling of his body he uses it as a tool of measurement to create geometric drawings through his movements.
Emma Mcnally -
Emma Mcnally's selected drawings from her website are incredible, they have this almost ethereal feeling to them as if they have been grabbed from space and delicately placed onto the paper that she uses.
Square -
My plan for this task was to create three different 'machines' and have them draw on pieces of paper that have been cut into the three shapes, I put the bits of cut paper onto a large bit of board so that the negative of each of the shapes would be seen and the idea was that if you put on a pair of those old cinema glasses it would isolate one colour.
For the square, I wanted to use another shape to create the square to create a sort of inception between the shapes. Fortunately and sort of un-fortunately I recently came across about 500 LP's that I inherited from my grandad so I hot glued some string around its perimeter and then soaked it in blue ink. I spun the ink-coated LP like you spin a coin and it created this really nice distorted circular pattern that almost made it look like it was glitching out.
Circle -
For the circles, I wanted to try a different approach that was a bit more organic and one that I didn't have as much control over. To make the actual circles I traced an LP and made six circles which I again stuck to the board. I hot glued and tied string to a thin paintbrush which I tied to the tree out the back of the 3D workshop because it seemed to be the perfect height, I then dipped the paintbrush in red ink and let the wind and the movement of the tree paint its own picture.
Triangle -
I felt a bit lost with the triangle but I remembered something I saw on my Instagram a few weeks ago where an artist melted a vinyl in an oven and it created this wigglily bowl thing which they used to create a stamp. Using this inspo I melted an LP with a heat gun but to give me less control and make it more machine-like like I did it over a rock and I then pressed
Semiotics- ‘An investigation into how meaning is created and how meaning is communicated.’
Index- ‘Communicates meaning thigh direct physical effect, for example, tyre tracks represent a car, thumbprint represents a person.’
Things to note from the brief:
- ‘An index in semiotic terms is a trace of something else, to use the terms of the discipline, the signifier is caused by the signified.’
- ‘Indices (e.g shadows/dust) rather than icons (symbolising a close physical resemblance to what they signify).’
- Creating works and experiments containing indices rather than icons/symbols.
Index Artist Research
Carolee Schneeman- performance artist
- ‘Investigations into subjectivity, the social construction of the female body, and the cultural biases of how art history have had significant influence on subsequent generations of artists.’
- In her prints schneeman uses light and shadows to compose the works creating this powerful atmosphere and making the overall composition dramatic as there isn’t any colour so the brightest points are highlighted by the dark subject matter. I think these pieces are interesting because she is taking an image of a performance and using gelatin prints to display them, but you don’t need to see a time piece to understand what’s going on because they’re honest and a bit aggressive to look at.
Tony Orrico
- ‘Orrico’s work has reached mass circulation for its ingenuity within the vernacular of performance and conceptual drawing. He uses his own somatic research, symmetry and suspension as a point of entry into his visual practice. He is interested in organised consciousness and applications of the body to a surface object or course.’
- His worked are varied and the motion used within his pieces are obvious indices. You only see the mark getting made when he is using his entire body to create the pieces but afterward all that is left is the marks that he has make using the movement of his body. I like how you can imagine how he would’ve made each piece, the range of movements he made to create the marks on the surfaces rather than portraying an image of something specific rather just exploring the multitude of ways he can create art with his gestures. The indices within his work are lively and show how he has directly interacted with the surfaces, and I think this is more interesting that say just drawing a circle, there’s a notable physicality to it.
Michelle Stuart #Woodstock NY 1973
- This piece created by Michelle Stuart was created using frottage, the pane of paper was places on an uneven surface and drawn over with pencil to pick up the textures of the area. The paper was a ‘strong archival rag paper that was laminated with natural muslin’ that was picked due to its high quality. The paper being of high quality was important as it needed to be able to endure the process of picking up fluctuations on the surface without tearing. This work is an index as the ground was used to create the marks but isn’t portrayed in the piece rather the textures of the surface are, which allows us to make assumptions about what it could be. Indices seem to allow for more curiosity as the object isn’t portrayed so it isn’t as clear as it would be if you had straightforward icons/symbols telling you what the artist is saying.

John Saxon (born Carmine Orrico; August 5, 1936 – July 25, 2020) Film and television actor who worked on more than 200 projects during a span of 60 years.
He portrayed Marco Polo in episode 26 of The Time Tunnel ("Attack of the Barbarians"), originally broadcast on March 10, 1967, and was a guest actor on Bonanza in 1967 ("The Conquistadores"). In episode 19, season 5 of The Virginian ("The Modoc Kid") Saxon appeared in the title role alongside a young actor, appearing in one of his first speaking roles, Harrison Ford. And in 1969 he appeared in Bonanza again ("My Friend, My Enemy"). He spent three years playing Dr. Theodore Stuart for the television series The Bold Ones: The New Doctors (1969–1972
Saxon starred as Dylan Hunt in the 1974 Gene Roddenberry television pilot Planet Earth, replacing Alex Cord from Genesis II. A 20th Century scientist unfrozen in the post-nuclear world of 2133, he leads a team of explorers and encounters a matriarchal society. Although ABC declined the series, Saxon played a nearly identical character in the 1975 television film Strange New World.
In 1976, Saxon portrayed a homicidal vampire-like strangler in the Season Two Starsky & Hutch episode 'Vampire'. He played Captain Radl in the two-part Wonder Woman episode "The Feminine Mystique" (1976). Raid on Entebbe (1977) was a prestige television movie for him.
He appeared in the 1982 television movie Rooster, and he was an occasional celebrity guest on the short-lived game show Whew!, including during the series' final week. His extensive television credits include two years as Tony Cumson on Falcon Crest (1982, 1986–1988) as well as the recurring role of Rashid Ahmed on Dynasty (1982–84). Wow a timely update? Only a month since the last one? Well, there’s some good stuff, and this likely won’t publish til nearly October. (Starting this on the 21st)
I’m revisiting Deftones, Meg Myers, and Sevdaliza again. There’s several rock songs with rapid drums, like found in metal, though not all are metal. I found a couple early-2000s pop songs in my archive and figured they’d be worth another listen, as well.
As always, I try to link to vids with still images when I can. Sometimes I can’t, but I try to note when there’s icky stuff. (Gif is from this video)

MRG Apartment, Spain
The MRG Apartment project consists of the interior updating of an apartment in the center of the city of Valencia. Fran Silvestre Arquitectos ordered the space looking for the continuity of the rooms, integrating the structural elements of the existing building within the divisions and the carpentry.
The plan is understood as three longitudinal bands that allow through ventilation. An area where you can work with generous natural lighting is incorporated into the main area of the house. A system of sliding carpentry allows incorporating or dividing the kitchen space from the living room depending on the situation.
A gym, a water area, a fireplace, a terrace facing south over the treetops of Gran Vía (the healthy biophilia) and various facilities give the apartment a level of comfort that sometimes you do not want to leave.
The materiality of the intervention is conceived as a kind of epidermis that naturally incorporates everything necessary, the installations, the storage, leaving it hidden and protected. It is made using natural materials that improve the conditions of the interior environment of the house, simplifying cleaning and maintenance.
The vertical walls and the ceiling in a 9016 tone encourage light to penetrate throughout the house, the wood on the floor along with other elements such as the artificial lighting provides the warmth that helps transform this space into perhaps more than just a house.
