He was deeply and proudly fatphobic through the entirety of both his careers. He romanticized some of the most violent and poverty-stricken years of NYC because they happened during his youth and made him feel like a tough guy. He insisted that if you were queer or female, workplace harassment was something you were supposed to just put up with to work in a kitchen, and if you objected it was proof you weren’t tough enough to handle being a chef. He was a cheerleader for some of the worst bigots and serial harassers in the restaurant business, glamorizing and valorizing them with his writing and television work. When Me Too finally forced him to reckon with all this, his defense was, “Hey, it was the 70’s/80’s man. Things were crazy back then.” He is the Hulk Hogan of the restaurant and food media world.

Fuck that guy.
