Not to be unoriginal, but I’d love to hear your picks for 4, 23, and 24 as well! Favorite character theme.
Originality is overrated anyway. Thanks for sending more asks for this! Love thinking about these.
4. Pick a piece at random and share it with us!
Incredible Crisis -- "Tondemo Crisis! THEME #1"
youtube
Whoever decided to get a ska band to do the soundtrack for a video game was clearly a brilliant mind. This is the game / album that turned me on to Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, and it so very perfectly fits the frantic energy of this very unusual game. A real foot tapper if ever there was one. I also wanted to pick something upbeat and fun to contrast against the double whammy of depression coming up next.
23. Favorite theme from an adventure game?
Heavy Rain -- "Ethan Mars' Main Theme"
youtube
"I don't wanna play this game anymore," moaned the child, as his father failed at the simple task of pushing a roundabout. I also felt like that a few times whilst playing this video game, which really nailed misery and pain with its soundtrack and atmosphere. It was exhausing to play when properly immersed in it, but equally hilarious when you try to break it and fail lots of the prompts.
24. What's your favorite character theme?
Silent Hill -- "Not Tomorrow"
youtube
This is often considered to be Lisa's Theme, and it's such a beautifully haunting track, one which reminds me of a very dark scene in the first Silent Hill game, one that I recorded onto VHS back in the day since it made such an impression upon me. There's a little bit of hope and optimism in there, which I take to be a reflection of Lisa's personality, but the song is shrouded by the depression and misfortune which more accurately reflected her reality, and her fate.

He's suffering, but he's suffering to a ska soundtrack, so at least we get to feel good about it all.

The long awaited PROSEKAI group rant (I’m on ENSekai)
Leo/Need:
Gonna start with Leo/Need because honestly, they’re my least favorite. I honestly only like Shiho and to be honest, when I first red the story, she was not a great person. None of them except Saki were good people. I dislike Honami the most. She was so fake during the story and I don’t really believe that she’s changed that much.
Favorite Song: Needle
Ichika cover: N/A (I hate her singing voice)
Saki cover: N/A (haven’t found any that I like yet)
Honami cover: N/A
Shiho cover: Needle or Kagerou Days. Most likely Needle
VBS:
Second favorite group, the have so many good songs. Their story was interesting and I relate to Kohane a lot. I love watching her find her confidence. When I first started their story I hated Akito. Then he grew on me over time and now he’s my favorite in the group. I have him at character rank 20. I like An and Toya but they personally don’t stick out to me as much as Akito and Kohane.
Favorite Song: Beat Eater
Kohane Cover: Children Record and Into the Night
An cover: N/A (I love her the most in Beat Eater but with the group. Haven’t found a cover of her’s that I like.)
Akito Cover: Pomp and Circumstance & Cinema
Toya Cover: Fragile
MMJ:
I love MMJ so much, but they’re not in my top 3. I love their personalities and watching them together as a group. Their character story is definitely my favorite. Minori is my absolute favorite, I love her so so much. Shizuku and Airi are tied because they’re gay. End of story. I like Haruka and Minori’s relationship a lot, they’re also gay. Some of their songs are lacking, which is why they’re lower in ranks.
Favorite Song: Newly Edgy Idols (shocker, I know)
Minori cover: Love trial
Haruka cover: N/A (haven’t found one I like yet.)
Shizuku cover: Romeo and Cinderella & Milk Crown
Airi cover: N/A (I love hearing her in all the songs, I simply cannot pick one.)
Wondershow
Second favorite group, I love every single one of them and I love all of their key stories. I relate to Emu WAY too hard and she is my top kin. Especially during Smile of a Dreamer. Rui is my second favorite, he’s so sassy and he knows he’s attractive (not sexualizing, I’m not creepy) so he shows it off as much as he can. Prime Example is Showtime Ruler. I like Nene quite a lot, she’s so sweet and working her way into herself. It’s so nice to watch. Tsukasa stans don’t come for me, but I really don’t like him. Not my least favorite in the game (that goes to Ena) but he’s so self centered, it’s ridiculous. He’s also really dumb, but I find that funny.
Favorite Song: TONDEMO Wonderz (Again, shocker)
Emu cover: Dance Robot Dance
Rui cover: Showtime Ruler and As You Like it
Nene: Chururira
Tsukasa: Chururira
Niigo
Favorite group in the game. This is the first time I’ve ever played a story based gacha game that delves so heavily into mental health and I love them for it. Mizuki is my favorite, I love them to pieces. (I also kin them.) Mafuyu is my second favorite because I relate to her trying to find herself again. (I also kin her.) I don’t have it as bad as she does but I understand. Kanade is very kind and sweet, she’s also soft spoken like I am. She’s gonna work herself into the grave, I truly hope she gets better. I really really don’t like Ena she is my least favorite in the game. She is clearly aware of Mafuyu going through a life crisis and still continues to be mean to her. I get that it’s her whole character, but I’m surprised that Mafuyu hasn’t gotten worse by now.
Favorite song: Bug and ID Smile (Kairiki Bear and Toa were in their BAGS with these songs)
Kanade cover: N/A (I prefer her in group songs)
Mafuyu Cover: Jackpot Sad Girl
Mizuki Cover: ID Smile and Lower
Ena Cover: Close to Gray
Ok, I’m done yapping my mouth, I love this game and these people so so much.

Entrevista a TOKYO SKA PARADISE ORCHESTRA Vol.1 x JAMAICA IN THE WORLD Podcast (Kitahara Masahiko, Kawakami Tsuyoshi, Atsushi Yanaka)
Gracias.

Incredible Crisis is the kind of game that might get more than one mention whilst this site is active. It's a series of bizarre 3D minigames that also goes by the name "Tondemo Crisis", and it was released on the PS1 and also as an arcade game. With minigame compilations, there's always an excuse to make one post about each minigame, but I didn't really have that in mind when I started typing this update. I just wanted to talk about this minigame in particular, and then maybe if I feel like it I'll cover some others at a later date. Before I go on, I should clarify that I primarily experienced the game via MAME, but aside from some awkward button configurations it's more or less the same experience as I've seen when viewing people playing the actual thing on YouTube or whatever.
For the most part, Incredible Crisis begins by hurtling the player's character through a series of, well, incredible crises. The initial character, Taneo, begins by relieving the pressures of office work by exercising in a rhythm-action dance routine, is later chased by an Indiana Jones-style rolling ball and even has to stop a falling lift before it crashes to the ground. It all seems like a lot of stress for one videogame character, but Taneo still finds time to relax in other minigames. Take the minigame "Love, fireworks and Ferris Wheel" for instance - it's a minigame that could have slotted nicely into Project Rub / Feel The Magic if not for the contrasting presentational styles. (And don't worry, Project Rub / Feel The Magic will probably make an appearance on this site soon enough.) By listening to the lady's speech (helpfully captioned if sound is a problem) the player uses the directional buttons to guide Taneo's hands where the lady wants them in order to give a decent back massage. As the player succeeds the lady's speech shows how appreciative she is, and after doing this enough times the game ends. As a game, it's not the most challenging thing, as you're literally following instructions - you just have to do them fast enough so that you make progress. And in terms of gender representation? Well, Taneo's pleasuring a woman - neither character is seen during the minigame, but the cutscene at the end of the preceding minigame shows the two exchanging meaningful glances before the ferris wheel stuff begins, so we can assume it's the same woman and not some random dude with a feminine voice. That aside, the minigame makes the woman the end goal and Taneo the hero (of that particular minigame), so it doesn't really escape those clichés...
