Cappella del Succorpo - Naples Cathedral
In the late 15th century, Cardinal Oliviero Carafa decided to build a chapel under the apse of the cathedral to display the bones of San Gennaro (Saint Januarius), the patron saint of Naples. It was completed in 1506 as designed by Donato Bramante with sculptural decoration by Tommaso Malvito.
The saint’s alleged bones are displayed in a terracotta jar inside the altar. A statue of Cardinal Carafa kneeling in prayer faces the altar and the relics. The niches along the walls hold busts of the first bishops of Naples.
