Propaganda under the cut
Majo Rika
stingy, selfish, awfully blunt and greedy to a fault---she's the perfect hag as far as i'm concerned. her attitude is not helped by the fact that she had to transform to a frog due to a curse in the witch world that dictates all witches exposed by a human are to turn into frogs, and take on said human as an apprentice until they're powerful enough to revert their master back to her original form. as recompense she makes the girls responsible for her turning work at her magic shop on her behalf and tears them a new one if they fail to make her that 👏 Bread 👏. however, with time they gain a soft spot in her heart and she starts treating them like her own daughters which is super sweet... about time we had an old lady Mentor character who slowly builds her own found family
she also has her own fairy who keeps sassing her and it's kinda fruity ngl,,, i mean their world /is/ made up entirely of women so..

Attribution: Tomie dePaola (b. Meriden, Connecticut, USA, 1934-2020). Snippet from Fight the Night (Philadelphia, USA: Lippincott, 1968). Deciding to fight the night because it always comes at the wrong time, a boy spends an unusual night under the covers at the bottom of his bed. I appreciate the feline representation. Thanks to @childrensbookclub for the tip.

The Color You Hate
Recently I finished reading an old interview of Tomie dePaola by Will Hillenbrand.  Both men are/were artists, writers and illustrators.  Tomie dePaola created more than 260 children’s books before he passed in 2020.  He described learning how to paint at Pratt, mentioning how lucky he was to have the instructors he did.  Many of them were refugees – modern artists, such as Richard Lindner – that…

Totally Youthful Tuesday
Tumblr media
I didn’t know that this existed. How did I not know that this existed? This is so cool, just like the original Strega Nona was so cool.
In Calabria (Strega Nona’s village) it’s the holiday season, and that means feast days. Strega Nona as well as everyone else is preparing both for the Feast of Saint Nicholas on December 6th, and then, we read along as the other holiday celebrations are celebrated in the month of December, ending with the Feast of Epiphany at the beginning of January. Also, Big Anthony just can’t help himself, and hilarity ensues because he just wants a little taste.
Such a good book. I hadn’t heard of the feast day of Saint Nicholas until this year (although, I did find out about it before I read this book). So, everything starting with that and ending with Epiphany was quite cool. It’s literally the entire Christian holiday season on one amazing book.
