French Style Tombstones: A Unique Blend of Artistry and Heritage
Edit By Justhighstone
French culture is renowned for its elegance, sophistication, and artistic flair, and these qualities are beautifully reflected in its tombstones. French style tombstones, or "pierres tombales," stand as silent works of art that pay homage to the departed while showcasing the country's rich history and artistic traditions. In this article, we will explore the fascinating world of French style tombstones, examining their history, design elements, and cultural significance.
A History of French Style Tombstones
The tradition of commemorating the dead with elaborate tombstones dates back centuries in France. Throughout history, French tombstones have evolved in style and design, influenced by various cultural and artistic movements. Let's delve into the key historical periods that have shaped these unique memorials:
Gothic Influence: The Gothic period (12th to 16th centuries) left an indelible mark on French architecture and tombstone design. During this era, tombstones featured intricate stone carvings, with religious motifs, ornate crosses, and detailed sculptures of the deceased.
Renaissance Elegance: The Renaissance (16th to 17th centuries) brought about a revival of classical art and design. French tombstones from this period often featured classical elements like Corinthian columns, pilasters, and mythological figures.
Rococo Extravagance: In the 18th century, the Rococo style influenced French tombstone design with its exuberant ornamentation. Curved lines, elaborate flourishes, and intricate detailing characterized tombstones from this era.
Neoclassical Simplicity: The late 18th and early 19th centuries saw a shift towards neoclassical aesthetics, characterized by clean lines, symmetry, and simple, elegant forms. French tombstones began to display a more restrained and refined style during this period.
Art Nouveau and Art Deco: The turn of the 20th century brought forth the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, which left their mark on tombstone design. Art Nouveau emphasized flowing lines and organic motifs, while Art Deco embraced geometric shapes and modernist influences.
Common Features of French Style Tombstones
French style tombstones are known for their attention to detail and artistic expression. Here are some common features that can be found on these tombstones:
Intricate Carvings: Elaborate stone carvings depicting religious symbols, angels, saints, or scenes from the deceased's life are often present on French tombstones.
Crosses and Crucifixes: Given the predominantly Catholic nature of France, crosses and crucifixes are prevalent symbols on tombstones, signifying faith and salvation.
Statues and Sculptures: Some tombstones feature life-sized or smaller statues of the deceased, angels, or other figures, adding a personal touch to the memorial.
Inscriptions: French tombstones typically feature inscriptions that include the name of the deceased, birth and death dates, and sometimes poetic or religious verses.
Floral and Decorative Motifs: Floral patterns, wreaths, and other decorative motifs adorn the borders and surfaces of French tombstones, adding a touch of elegance.
Cultural Significance
French style tombstones are more than mere markers; they are a testament to the country's reverence for its history and culture. They serve as a visual representation of the enduring bond between the living and the departed, reflecting the nation's commitment to preserving its heritage through artistry and craftsmanship.
Conclusion
French style tombstones are a captivating blend of art, history, and cultural expression. Each one is a unique masterpiece, telling a story of the past and offering a glimpse into the values and aesthetics of French society at different points in history. These tombstones are not just memorials; they are a testament to the enduring legacy of French artistry and the profound respect for those who have gone before us.

Canonically, all of the muses within The Marked have died. They were then randomly selected and presented a chance for a second life. Once accepted, they are brought back with a few perks that normal humans don't have, but the catch is that they must hunt curses. They are known as The Marked, and they keep their actual identities a secret from society. The phenomena of the deal dates back beyond a set time. So while most of the muses on this group are of the modern era, the traditions / practice has always been around.
This group was originally located in the states. Upon request by the higher echelon of JJT, they have more or less relocated overseas. All Marked members are to considered as sorcerers.
No one outside of the marked knows them as such. to others, theyâre known as 0 ; the beginning to all ends, the end to all beginnings.
0 is an underground syndicate that deals in weapon supply, cage fights, and sorcerers for hire. Theyâre an odd bunch, certainly, but they always get the job done. Their influences has been spread far and wide to those that know where to look.
The core of 0 are all Marked members, but there are others permitted to join as well. Not a single word is ever said about who or what The Marked are. despite how cohesive and high functioning 0 is, The Marked will always stay loyal to themselves first.
Codenames arenât used within 0. All Marked members go by their civilian names.
Additional resources / help is often outsourced â this opens a more accessible starting point for other sorcerers and the like. Curse infused / possessed users are welcomed! Just know theyâre being watched. Any particularly bad fuck ups and The Marked will take notice and deal with it accordingly.

What Is Tombstone? Importance Of Granite Tombstone
Tombstones are a part of a cemetery, a place where a dead body is buried. However, a tombstone doesn't just mark a place where a body lies. It's more than that. As a memorial, a tombstone shares information on a person's life, legacy and story. It is a symbol of remembrance and a way to keep a dead person's memory alive.
There are various kinds of design materials available in the market today when it comes to building monuments. Granite, however, is one that is highly used.
Granite is certainly one of the most durable and long-lasting materials available when it comes to tombstones. Not only are granite headstones made from the absolute best natural material, but they are also naturally non-porous which means they won't fade or crack over time. This makes for a very visually appealing tombstone to honor the memory of loved ones by providing a lasting tribute for years to come. Love In The Art Of Flowers 3: White
Chapter Three: White, New Beginnings.
Summary: I close my eyes to old endings, and open my heart to new beginnings.
Characters: Frank Castle x Non-descriptive Reader
Words: 2034
Warnings: Mentions of loss, and guilt. Fluff.
Previous Chapter: Yellow
Next Chapter: LavenderÂ
Masterlist
They were dead. They were all dead.Â
His plan had come to fruition, and he had been successful. The only issue? He didnât necessarily presume heâd survive. He had no plan for what heâd do when it ended.Â
So... Now what?
Heâd made plans with you for later, offering to pick you up after work knowing damned well if he didnât, you end up staying there late and work yourself into an early grave.
He ignored the irony.
Wandering around the small shop, his hands grazed against soft petals, as smooth as silk, his brow wrinkling as he looked over his options.
âLooking for something specific?â
Frank turned towards the woman, her hair graying at the roots but a warm smile that reached her eyes. She felt almost Grandmother-ly, âUh, just browsinâ for now.â
âAlright well, if you need any help, or if you decide on your own, Iâll be over by the till.â
Frank sent her a polite nod, before continuing his search. Glancing at the large tin bucket, he picked up a bunch of white roses, lifting them to his nose and taking a deep breath. He eyed them for a while, unsure whether or not to buy them, and decided to continue around the store for a while.
As he reached the back wall, his eyes caught a small, but pretty bunch of flowers already wrapped in a neat bow.
Peonies.Â
His nostrils flared as he sucked in deep breaths through his nose.
In. Out. In. Out.
His hand reached out against his will, fingers lightly grazing the petal. When was the last time he bought Maria flowers?
When he genuinely couldnât recall, he couldnât help but feel like a piece of shit.
âOh, peonies. Beautiful, arenât they?â
âYeah... Yeah they are.â He picked up the small bunch of white flowers, and was certain he could feel his heart beating through his chest.
âThe roses are lovely too. My supplier was very happy with them this season.â
Frank simply nodded in agreement. As she watched Frankâs eyes dart between the two flowers; roses in his right hand, peonies in his left, and a large lump lodged in his throat that he was unable to swallow down.
âCanât decide between the two?â The owner smiled up at him.
Merely grunting, he shrugged his shoulders. It wasnât that simple.
It never was.
Frank made his way up the long, winding path. Normally he was indifferent to the walk, didnât care for it either way. Heâd walk with purpose up the hill, head down and unapproachable in every way. Yet today...
Today he made his way slowly up the hill, his feet dragging as if he were trying to put off his arrival. He took a moment to look around... A field full of the dead. A few words on a tombstone to define someoneâs whole existence. And what for? When youâre dead... Youâre dead.
Frank decided to keep his eyes on the ground once more.
Crouching on his haunches, he dusted the loose dirt from the stone, his finger tracing the engraved letters.
Maria Elizabeth Castle
Three little words that made his whole body ache, his heart tighten and his chest heave.Â
He didnât dare look at the two other graves next to it.Â
He stayed for a long time, the sky bursting with new colors as dusk settled in, dark purples and dusty pinks melting into the burned orange and soft yellows that would eventually be buried completely with the almost black sky.
He knew what he was here to do, but much like when she was alive, Frank couldnât find the words. At least, not the words he felt she deserved.
How do you tell the person that you intended to spend the rest of your life with, growing old and wrinkled as your grandchildren ran around in the same home their parents -- your own babies -- were raised in?
How was that anything other than a betrayal?
But she had left him, first.
He had to push the anger down, physically swallow it before he forced itâs way out of him. She hadnât chosen to leave him. She was taken from him, and his anger at her was misplaced. Unfair.
And after so many years of marriage -- even though many were spent physically away from each other -- he knew her well. And she wouldnât have wanted him to sit by her grave every evening, drowning his sorrows into a bottle of Jack as he cursed the world around him.
She would want him to find peace, however he could.
And maybe that was by putting down those who caused the same type of pain he was dealing with to innocent people. Murderers, kidnappers, drug dealers, rapists. They deserved it.Â
But sometimes...Â
Sometimes he found peace in places heâd never of expected to, ordinary and probably even mundane to some people but for Frank...
He felt undeserving. But she would want him to have peace.
In any way he found it.
With his last thought, Frank stood, pressing his fingers to his lips and then his fingers to the grave.
A farewell kiss. An apology.Â
A part of him would always want to scream and sob and curse at the thought. But every day, little by little, that was chipped away at. His binding and unbreakable chains no longer being tussled and pulled, the action itself futile.
Instead, it seemed they were simply unlocked.
A key in the shape of late night movies, shared cartons of low mein, sipping cold beer from the bottle in some rundown dive bar. Sneaking in late to steal back his own damned dog and being caught. The long nights at the launderette, legs swinging from where you were perched, waiting for the spin cycle to finish because your stupid machine had packed up and -- despite Frankâs warnings -- you had tried to fix it yourself. Â
Finally, Frank placed the flowers down in front of the headstone, his other hand lingering on it, as if this would be the last time heâd see it.Â
Eventually, he made his way back down the hill and to his van, checking his watch after he strapped in his seat belt. He would still be early.
You tugged on the paper sheet, drying your hands before throwing it into the trashcan next to your table. Another day done and dusted, and you were even leaving before some other members of staff, something both they and yourself were slowly having to get used to.
Pulling on your coat, you turned off the light and slipped out of your office, ready to say goodnight to Patricia, a sweet older woman who manned the reception desk for you, but you stopped once youâd turned around.
You knew Frank was coming to pick you up from work, but heâd never actually stepped foot inside the building. At least not when other people were there, and he wasnât bleeding out all over your floor.
âFrank?â
He could sense your confusion, and it made him switch his weight between his feet. Unsure of what to say, he simply lifted up the small bouquet of white roses, holding them out towards you.
As a small smile stretched across your lips, a matching one found its way onto his.
âGoodnight.â Patricia smirked, peering at you both from over her rounded glasses.
As you walked towards his van and clambered in -- bag in one hand, flowers in the other -- you waited until heâd settled himself in besides you,
âThank you for these, but you know that by actually coming inside tonight, youâll have Patricia gossiping for weeks.â
âArenât you her boss?â Furrowing your brow, you turned to him and nodded. His face remained stoic, âThen just fire her.â
Huffing out a sigh, you hit him lightly with the bouquet, âSheâs also my friend.â
Shrugging, Frank smirked, âAnd so am I.â
âYouâre an asshole, Castle.â You smiled back at him, waiting for him to start the van up and head off in the direction of your favorite Chinese takeout.
Youâd both settled down on the small sofa at your place, a standard Thursday night. Chinese from a carton, a film playing in the background, and a bottle of beer or two to wash it all down.Â
âItâs so stupid. Why would you run upstairs?â
What had started as a small grumble during the first kill, was now a full blown tangent about the stupidity of these films. Yet you still chose to watch them, time and time again.
His eyes scanned between the movie and yourself, a small chuckle leaving his lips when he saw your disgruntled face, âI mean, people do stupid things when theyâre scared.â
Turning to him, you were practically pouting, âWhatâs got into you tonight?â
âHm?âÂ
Turning yourself around on the small sofa, you looked him over for a moment, âYou always join in with me about the stupidity in these films. Whatâs got you in such a good mood?â
He turned his own head, eyes full of warmth as they took in your features, the only light in the room coming from the screen.Â
Leaning towards the table and grabbing his beer -- a quick pat to Maxâs head when it popped up from the floor -- he had the last few sips before settling back on the sofa, eyes on you as you still watched him.
âJust... Feeling a lot lighter today, I guess.â
Accepting his answer, you shrugged and turned back to the TV, âWonât be if you keep putting beer away like that, Castle.â
Frank stretched as the films credits rolled, the names whizzing past too fast for his weary brain to really take in. Not that he cared, either way.
Youâd dropped out about 30 minutes before the end, not that it was unusual at all. He couldnât even remember the last film youâd managed to watch from start to finish.
He stood and decided to clear the coffee table before taking you to bed. He was almost certain you did it on purpose. One time he was sure that he saw an eye open slightly. He just never found it in himself to wake you, not when he knew how chaotic your life could be.
So instead, he threw out the cartons, left the empty bottles on the side to throw out tomorrow, and gently carried you to your bedroom.
Thankful that youâd already changed into a pair of sweatpants and a loose fitting top when youâd arrived home, he simply tucked you in under the covers and made his move to leave, but something caught his eye.
On your small chest of drawers -- the one heâd had to fix for you last week when you tugged it way too hard and broke the runner -- was the small bouquet of white roses heâd bought you, sitting pretty in a clear vase.
The florist was right, they really were beautiful.
Making his way to them, his fingers brushed against them gently, as if he was scared to knock any of the petals off.Â
Heâd spent so long fighting his demons, trying to make the people that were responsible for the death of his family pay, that he felt like tonight was the first time heâd really been able to stop and take a breath. As he turned towards you, his dark eyes unusually soft, he finally felt it.
When heâd sat at his wifeâs grave earlier, quietly speaking to her, expressing his misplaced guilt, heâd finally come to terms with the fact that she wouldnât rise up out of the grave and answer him, no matter who he pushed away, or what he did.
Heâd killed the bastards responsible for their deaths, put them in the ground just like theyâd done to his family and whilst he would never, ever call them a burden, he couldnât help but feel his chest become lighter as he walked away from the graveyard.
It wasnât a goodbye, it was just the chance of a new hello.
Peace, he thought to himself as he watched the moon gently caressing your features. Thatâs what he felt now.
Peace.

Chinese Food in The American West
One of the things I frequently come across as a student of the American West* is that people get most of their information from movies and TV and then act like they know things. Wyatt Earp was not a Lawful Good champion who always did his level best even when it was hard to know. (You want Seth Bullock or Bass Reeves). Racism was far more complicated than white vs not white (Iâve talked about this EXTENSIVELY in Strange Empire, so Iâm not going to bore you here**).Â
And they didnât just eat steak. In fact, they rarely ate steak.Â
Steak as cowboy food isnât INACCURATE, but it is MODERN. From about the early 1900s on, you had less and less drives and more and more ranchers who were staying put, with less and less hands needed, and so food was grabbed less âon the go.â Cows could be slaughtered and used to feed the family, allowing for more opportunities for things like steak, yes, but also things like chili, a play on sauerbraten, southern-style biscuits. The cattle drives were a real blend of culture and race, and a lot of what we have left as âWestern foodâ owes a great deal to that.Â
And if we leave the cattle drives and head into the towns of the American West, as we will today, we find things like oysters, pies, and various things like that. Far more well-heeled than the general expectation.Â
I mean, hereâs the menu from the Occidental Saloon circa the late 1880s:
Soups
Chicken Giblet and Consumme, with Egg
Fish
Columbia River Salmon, au Beurre Noir
Relieves
Filet a Boeuf, a la Financier
Leg of Lamb, Sauce, Oysters
Cold Meats
Loin of Beef, Loin of Ham, Loin of Pork, Westphalia Ham, Corned Beef, Imported Lunches
Boiled Meats
Leg of Mutton, Ribs of Beef, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Russian River Bacon
Entrees
Pinons a Poulett, aux Champignons
Cream Fricasse of Chicken, Asparagus Points
Lapine Domestique, a la Matire d'Hote
Casserole d'Ritz aux Oeufs, a la Chinoise
Ducks of Mutton, Braze, with Chipoluta Ragout
California Fresh Peach, a la Conde
Roasts
Loin of Beef, Loin of Mutton, Leg of Pork
Apple Sauce, Suckling Pig, with Jelly, Chicken Stuffed Veal
Pastry
Peach, Apple, Plum, and Custard Pies
English Plum Pudding, Hard Sauce, Lemon Flavor
This dinner will be served for 50 cents.
-I got this from the book âSaloons of the Old Westâ by Erdoes
But none of that is precisely why Iâm here, I just canât stop myself from talking about this, why Iâm here is that one of the things I say that often surprises people, is that Chinese food was incredibly common for the, well, common man to eat. Thereâs very much a conception that we as a non-Chinese American people did not start eating Chinese food until the 40s and 50s, and its truer that it took longer to catch on in the American East than the West simply as a matter of proximity and choice.Â
Not MORE choice but LESS. Part of what made the West so unique, historically, is that the lack of choice and the basic scarcity caused people to work with and patronize people that their general prejudices would have kept them from using back east, because they had CHOICES. But out in the west, less so. There were few choices for a quick, cheap meal on the go. That dinner I just posted above is a lavish affair, and a great deal at approximately $20.00 in todayâs money. (Which does not allow for the fact that cost of supplies has gone up and this dinner would most likely be offered for no less than 70 or so today.)Â
People desperately wanted something that was cheap and quick, and the other options in the American West were few, far between, and not intensely pleasing. No one had really come up with the sandwich shop as of yet, and in any case, fresh meats and cheeses would have been too difficult for the low-cost supplier.Â
ENTER THE CHINESE POPULATION.
If you have read my Strange Empire blogs, I hope you know that Chinese people were a huge presence in the American West, mostly working for the railroad and various mines, but also doing things like laundry, work that was extremely hard but took little in the way of English speaking. They existed in Chinatowns, for a combination of cultural and legal factors, but itâs a misconception that non-Chinese*** people never went to Chinatown.Â
People are not new, and it was not unusual for non-Chinese people to use the laundries, tailoring, and other services of Chinatowns while suppressing the rights of Chinese people int he same breath. There were always individual Chinese people any given non-Chinese person liked and did business with.Â
In time, they discovered the inherent wisdom of the noodle bowl.Â
I donât mean to suggest that all these early restaurants served was noodle bowls, but that was where it all started. Remember, Italian food had little prominence in America at the this time, as Italian immigration didnât really get into full swing until the 1870s in America. While there are noodle traditions half of everywhere, and there is nothing new under the sun, what we today would consider a stir-fry bowl was wildly new to most of the non-Chinese folks in the West. That it could be offered up so cheaply, was so filling, and so delicious (more on this later) was a wild revelation. Everyone from simple cowboys (which, fun fact! Was a slur back then!) to mayors were swinging by Chinatowns to try the dishes.Â
By the 1920s, chop suey, a fully Chinese American invention derived from the words for âvarious leftoversâ was a hugely popular American food among all sorts.Â
Doc, you may ask, was it just that these folks coming through to get medicines or laundry were SO adventurous? Not at all! Chinese restaurants back then actually, in a very short amount of time, realized that their non-Chinese townsfolk were an excellent way to make money as well, and began to adapt and change dishes to better fit the Western palate, leading what we call American Chinese Food today, which is a legitimate foodway I will defend to my death. Unfortunately, none of these menus survive today--the only ones we have are from places in San Francisco, places that were much more posh, and not the subject of this essay.Â
There is a scene in Tombstone where Wyatt and his brothers are eating Chinese food, and itâs one of the things people often ask me about, assuming itâs anachronistic. Actually, it isnât at all--the anachronism is that thereâs broccoli in those noodle bowls, which had not yet hit our shores by the time of the OK Corral. Chinese food was a huge hit, Chinese restaurants were doing extremely well, and some Chinese restaurants were even beginning to attempt to print menus in English, with sit down areas, instead of serving simple fare from food carts.Â
As the food from these âchow chow housesâ grew in popularity, as we can infer from the advertisements of their competitors promising free potatoes with every meal, and other such niceties to entice, there was, as ever there must be, blowback. Anti-Chinese sentiment grew to a fever pitch, and with this came overt pressure for âGood Americansâ to patronize âAmerican restaurantsâ. The social pressure is actually where we get some of that old racist jargon about Chinese people serving dogs and cats, which people often think was spread by competitors to degrade the Chinese restaurants, which isnât UNTRUE, but was just as often said sheepishly by someone who couldnât stop themselves from going and grabbing a noodle bowl or even the American dishes they offered, such as roast chicken or pork chop sandwiches.Â
(I wonât comment with anything but an eyeroll on the bullshit of people saying theyâre ~allergic to MSG~ okay Iâll believe you when you stop eating processed food, meat, aged cheese)Â
It actually kept this type of reputation as being slightly scandalous well into the early 1900s, as being something you ate after the bar, something to be had in the shadows, but it was all for naught, because Chinese food became an important part of American identity. But for all that, no one ever pictures the Lone Ranger chowing down (the American phrase âchowâ for food actually comes from these âchow chow housesâ) on some chop suey, but thereâs every reason to believe he would have. American Chinese food is just as American as the Germanically-influenced hamburger.Â
(Thereâs a whole subtopic to go down about Jewish and Chinese communities and Kosher Chinese Food, two marginalized and othered communities coming together, but thatâs a WHOLE other topic)Â
(Also someone please buy me Chinese food. This shit always makes me so hungry.)Â
*The American West is a specific time period, as far as the study of history goes. It covers the period between the end of the Civil War and the New Century, generally, and is, obviously, concerned with the western half of the country. It doesnât cover stuff like Lewis and Clark (thatâs Expansion) or even the Civil War itself, though you cannot possibly hope to study the American West in any level of seriousness without understanding the Civil War. Anyway! I know a lot about America between 1865 and 1900, and am just knowledgeable enough to be dangerous on everything else. Most History nerds are highly specified like this. Weâre not as much help to your trivia team as you think.****
**I actually have had little chance to talk about ~European-style xenophobia~ as it played out in the west, because Strange Empire takes a more modern pass at it. But there was a hierarchy of âwhitenessâ as well, as still largely exists in Europe, land of intentionally clean ethnostates.Â
***I use the term ânon-Chineseâ instead of white because believe it or not, non-white people were not magically free of racism against Chinese people. It was horrific and BASICALLY every non-Chinese person was guilty of it to some level, a wild-ass level of hatred that led to Chinese folks not being able to PURCHASE PROPERTY BY LAW in ENTIRE STATES. Being Chinese or Native in this place and time was your Worst Bet.Â
****I actually was on a competitive trivia team, you DO want me.

Taskmaster is a mysterious figure believed to have been born in Bronx, New York City. He has the ability to mimic the physical movements of anyone he witnesses; writers differ on whether this counts as a "super power". He claims that he has had this ability since childhood. He works as a combat instructor and trains others to become lackeys for other villains by utilizing the techniques he has learned from his observation of superheroes and participates in mercenary jobs from time to time. Initially portrayed as a villain, he has also been shown training U.S. Agent and other neophyte superheroes at the behest of the US government. As a mercenary, he has no ideology except that of his employer. Due to his ability to imitate the techniques and armory of other heroes and villains, Taskmaster has occasionally been used to impersonate other characters.
Tony Masters first demonstrated unusual abilities during childhood. After watching a cowboy show on television, he found himself able to duplicate the sophisticated rope tricks he had just watched the cowboy perform. Psychiatrists, called in at the mother's request, determined that the boy had a form of photographic memory which they called "photographic reflexes". He employed his power several times during his youth for personal gain, most notably when he became a star quarterback of his high school football team after watching one pro football game. Upon graduation, he briefly considered a career as a crime fighter, but opted instead to be a professional criminal, which he perceived to be far more lucrative.[6]
He then began a program of observing the fighting techniques of numerous costumed heroes and villains (using archival television news broadcasts). He initially used his fighting skills to execute several successful grand larcenies, but he had not properly anticipated the dangers involved. He decided to use his stolen capital to establish a center for training aspiring criminals to turn into polished professionals. His goal was to become a supplier for criminal organizations around the world.
Designing a costume with a white cowl and skull mask, he took the name "Taskmaster" and began to train many thugs at criminal academies he had located around the United States. However, his existence was eventually revealed when Pernell Solomon of the Solomon Institute for the Criminally Insane (a front for one of these academies) used the school's resources to create a clone of himself when the administrator required an organ donation due to possessing an extremely rare blood type; the clone (learning of this fate) managed to contact the Avengers. Taskmaster captured Yellowjacket, the Wasp and Ant-Man when the Avengers invaded the premises;[7] but the Avengers followed, exposing his front operation. Taskmaster held his own against Captain America and Iron Man, however, was subsequently forced to flee after a confrontation with Jocasta since his lack of experience with Jocasta's abilities made it impossible to predict the robot's next move.[6] Taskmaster later established a new training academy in Manhattan, where he battled Spider-Man and Ant-Man, and then escaped.[8] He later used a traveling carnival as a mobile base, where he battled Hawkeye and Ant-Man, and then escaped again.[9] He next trained henchmen for the Black Abbott. Alongside Black Abbott, he battled Spider-Man and Nomad, and escaped yet again.[10]
Deciding to further explore the use of a circus as a front for his academy, Taskmaster took over yet another small outfit, and used it for many months to great success. However, while it was playing a small town in Ohio, the Thing and Vance Astrovik (who would later take the name Justice) assisted a government agent in foiling Taskmaster's activities. While escaping, Taskmaster was captured by a group of U.S. Secret Service agents and taken into custody.[11] There is reason to believe that Red Skull was behind the Taskmaster's capture, since a group of normal men were able to capture him.[citation needed] Through Douglas Rockwell (the head of the President's Commission on Superhuman Activities), Mr. Smith arranged for Taskmaster to train John Walker in order to make him appear to be the real Captain America.[12] In order to conceal Red Skull's involvement, Rockwell had the Commission work out a deal to have years taken off Taskmaster's sentence in return for training Walker. After Taskmaster successfully trained Walker, Red Skull arranged for him to escape from the Commission's detention center so he could continue training lackeys and Red Skull himself.[volume & issue needed]
Having escaped the authorities, he set up a base in a derelict graveyard in Brooklyn, where he battled Spider-Man and then escaped.[13] Taskmaster then competed in a contest against Tombstone, where he battled Daredevil and the Punisher.[14]
Taskmaster's more skilled, successful, and notable students include such characters as Crossbones and Cutthroat (both Red Skull's henchmen), U.S. Agent, Hauptmann Deutschland, Diamondback (Captain America's one-time girlfriend), Spymaster, Spider-Woman, and Agent X. On the other hand, Taskmaster also trains many of his students to serve as low-rent henchmen and cannon fodder. In his early appearances, Taskmaster mentions putting intellect-reducing drugs in the diet of his students. He also routinely sent groups of his more disappointing students to serve as "sparring partners" for Red Skull, routinely engaging several of them at a time and killing them all (Hauptmann Deutschland infiltrated the academy and used one such session as an opportunity to kidnap Red Skull). He has also employed other supervillains, such as when he hired Anaconda as his academy's calisthenics instructor.[volume & issue needed]
On another occasion, Taskmaster was hired by the Triune Understandingâa religious group secretly masterminding a smear campaign to paint the Avengers as being religiously and racially intolerantâto stage an attack on a Triune facility. Posing as Captain America, he contacted Warbird, Ant-Man, Silverclaw and Captain Marvel, claiming that he needed their help to destroy a Triune building containing a mind-control machine. Although they saw through his deception and subsequently defeated himâthanks to Captain Marvel transforming into Rick Jones mere milliseconds away from Taskmaster, thus causing a complete change of attack before Taskmaster could reactâthe building was destroyed in the ensuing battle and Taskmaster escaped, leaving the heroes lacking any evidence of their story.[15]
Taskmaster continued to train numerous villains and thugs until the Avengers began to search out and shut down some of his academies across the United States. Taskmaster began to spend more time working as a mercenary in order to make up for the loss of profit. This led him to join Agency X at the behest of his love interest Sandi Brandenberg, in missions from time to time, while continuing to teach at his academies around the world. More recently, Taskmaster is once again seen as a hired mercenary, contracted by the Committee to kill Moon Knight (Marc Spector). Taskmaster was misled with information that Moon Knight was broken, friendless and desiring death. During the conflict these factors all proved to be false as Marc's ex-girlfriend and butler came to Spector's defense and found the will to fight back. Despite his superior fighting abilities, Taskmaster was defeated. Moon Knight then carved off part of Taskmaster's facemask, though left him alive.[16]
Taskmaster also worked at training henchmen to copy fighting styles of specific heroes. Taskmaster unleashed Deathshield (trained to fight like Captain America), Jagged Bow (trained to fight like Hawkeye), and Blood Spider (trained to fight like Spider-Man) to face off against Spider-Man and Solo. The three were defeated, while Taskmaster escaped yet again.[17]
When the "Civil War" broke out, Taskmaster was hired by the government and enrolled into a team of Thunderbolts and given temporary amnesty to take down the Secret Avengers.[18] He later battles the Secret Avengers in New York. He attempts to kill Susan "Sue" Storm, only for Reed Richards to take the bullet. Enraged, Sue crushes him with an invisible telekinetic field, rendering him unconscious.[19] He was sent to the Negative Zone Prison with the other "Major-League" members of the Thunderbolts army such as Lady Deathstrike,[volume & issue needed] but was apparently freed by Deadpool.[20] In order to regain his own reputation as a mercenary, Deadpool frees Taskmaster from his imprisonment to have a showdown with him while potential merc contractors watched from their captive position in a nearby prison. Taskmaster is again referred to as Tasky by Deadpool, and a fight ensues between him and the manacled Deadpool. He mentions his professional ethics, but this simply comes down to deciding to simply maim his opponent rather than kill him. In the end, he is defeated by Deadpool who, in spite of the victory, fails to impress his captive audience. After being thanked for letting him win, Taskmaster tells Deadpool that he had not let him win, "The truth is... You're that good. You've always been that good. Which won't get you a cup of coffee until you figure out how to be a professional..."[21] Taskmaster was given a full presidential pardon for his efforts in testing the security of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, in which he was able to break in and place Deputy Director Maria Hill in his sights. Though he was allowed to leave, a threatening message left in Hill's private bathroom revealed that if he ever desired, infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. would be no difficult feat.[volume & issue needed]
Taskmaster replaces Gauntlet as Camp Hammond's drill instructor and is tasked with training registered superheroes for the Fifty State Initiative. Taskmaster would also be involved in MVP's cloning process inputting (via technology) the original's move set for the Scarlet Spiders as well as the move set of Spider-Man.[22]
Taskmaster is hired by Deadpool to help his old enemy and occasional friend defeat the Thunderbolts. Being disguised as Deadpool, he gets captured and is about to be beheaded when the real Deadpool saves him. Deadpool finally pays him, but he expresses annoyance at being paid from an ATM due to his major villain status.[23]
During the "Dark Reign" storyline, Taskmaster is chosen to lead the Shadow Initiative after the Skrull invasion, with their first mission to take down Hardball's HYDRA cell in Madripoor.[24] Along with Constrictor, Bengal, Typhoid Mary and Komodo, Taskmaster stealthily leads the group into the country, but they are soon discovered by HYDRA.[25] Norman Osborn appoints Taskmaster to train criminals for the new Initiative, to behave like heroes. His first task is to retrain Penance.[26] Also, when Blastaar takes control of the Negative Zone prison 42, Taskmaster is ordered to lead a squad to take the prison back.[27] Later, he gives Night Thrasher a severe bullet wound to the head, allowing Osborn to take Night Thrasher prisoner.[28] When Emma Frost and Namor resign from the Cabal, Taskmaster is offered membership.[29] Taskmaster was present at a meeting when Osborn discusses about Asgard.[30][31] He is severely wounded at the meeting as a result of an attack by Doctor Doom. While recovering in a hospital, Taskmaster declined to join the Cabal. Osborn cut the oxygen tank next to Taskmaster's bed, reminding him that it was Osborn who plucked him from obscurity. Taskmaster then agrees to join in the siege of Asgard.[29] During the battle, he fights with both versions of Captain America (Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes).[32] As Asgard falls, Taskmaster finds Constrictor and the two beat a hasty retreat, but not before Taskmaster taunts Osborn about how Taskmaster helped Deadpool. After Osborn's defeat by Captain America and Iron Man, Taskmaster and Constrictor went back to mercenary work.[33]
A false rumor is spread that Taskmaster is leaking information about the criminal underworld to Rogers's new 'heroic' regime. A bounty of $1,000,000,000 is placed on the Taskmaster's head by the mysterious Org. The hordes of AIM, HYDRA, the Secret Empire, ULTIMATUM, the Cyber Ninjas, the Black Choppers, the Trenchcoat Mafia, the Legions of the Living Lightning, the Militiamen, the Sons of the Serpent, and the Inquisition take up the chase to claim the money. Taskmaster, ambushed in a small diner, manages to best his opponents. But the diner's waitress, Mercedes Merced, gets entangled in the saga and is included in the bounty. Taskmaster reveals to Mercedes that his powers cause him to lose his explicit memory, meaning that he cannot remember anything about his personal life, and the only way for the whole ordeal to be over is to re-discover Taskmaster's origins.[34] Taskmaster and Mercedes' quest takes them to Mexico to battle the Don of the Dead,[35] and then to Bolivia to the village where everyone is Hitler. Inside an exact replica of Himmler's Wewelsburg Castle, Taskmaster regains his memories. He remembers being S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Tony Masters that had been sent to Bolivia to terminate Horst Gorscht, the Nazi scientist responsible for a corrupted version of the super-soldier serum. Gorscht had developed a new serum that could unlock the mind's potential to absorb knowledge instantaneously. With Gorscht's serum and test notes destroyed, Masters injected the last of the serum into himself. Having regained these memories, Taskmaster recognizes Mercedes' voice as being the same as 'The Hub', a mysterious voice who works for the Org. Taskmaster shoots Mercedes in the shoulder and threatens to kill her if she doesn't start talking. Mercedes reveals that the Org is a S.H.I.E.L.D. front, and that she is not only an agent, but also Taskmaster's wife. Miles above the Wewelsburg castle in an airship, the Minions' International Liberation Front (a secret group composed of henchmen from all of the major terrorist organizations), led by Redshirt the Uber-Henchman, reveal their deception and plot to rule the criminal underground by using Taskmaster to lead them straight to the Org.[1] Redshirt leads the Minions' International Liberation Front (or the acronym MILF for short) into battle against the Taskmaster and Mercedes. Mercedes convinces the Taskmaster to trust her and work together to fend off the forces of MILF. During the battle, Taskmaster regains his memories of Mercedes and how he fell in love with her. Before they can reconcile, Taskmaster is attacked from behind by Redshirt who has genetically altered his body and mastered superior fighting skills to those of Taskmaster. Redshirt gains the upper hand as the pair push each other to the limits. Mercedes tries to intervene to protect her husband, but is quickly and effortlessly cast to one side. Enraged, Taskmaster attacks Redshirt and delivers a killing blow using Redshirt's own fighting style (which causes Taskmaster to lose his memories once more). Taskmaster, not recognizing Mercedes or his reasons for being there, flees and leaves Mercedes alone once more.[volume & issue needed]
Avengers Academy student Finesse later seeks out Taskmaster, thinking that he may be her long-lost father. When she finds Taskmaster, Finesse ends up sparring with him. After much sparring, Taskmaster finally relents to tell Finesse that he very well might be her father, but that the powers to learn so much about othersâ movements and techniques have caused him to forget important things in life. Knowing he likely will not remember the conversation in a couple days, Taskmaster tells Finesse that he wanted to fight her so he might remember her.[36]
During the 2011 "Fear Itself" storyline, Taskmaster comes to the aid of Alpha Flight when it comes to forming a resistance against the Unity Party that was formed by Master of the World.[37]
In order for the Masters of Evil to obtain the Crown of Wolves for the Shadow Council, Max Fury hired Taskmaster to retrieve it only for Taskmaster to demand more money for the job and he hid in the Hole. The Secret Avengers went to the Hole in order to get the Crown of Wolves before Fury got his hands on it. This led to a fight between Taskmaster and Agent Venom.[38] However, Taskmaster escaped and returned the crown to Fury, only for Max to apparently kill Taskmaster when he asks for payment. When the crown's effects don't function for Max, Taskmaster takes the crown for himself, which saves his life by making him the Avatar for the Abyss.[39] As the Abyss spreads, the Secret Avengers members Venom and Ant-Man are able to remove the crown and stop the spread, while Taskmaster and the Masters of Evil are left behind when the Avengers leave with Max in their custody.[40]
The criminals of Bagalia imprison Taskmaster and are preparing to offer him up to the highest bidder. S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Secret Avengers come to rescue him and offer him a position. As their inside man, Taskmaster is part of the new High Council of A.I.M. as the Minister of Defense.[41] Mockingbird later goes to A.I.M. Island to assist Taskmaster in helping make contact between the Iron Patriot A.I. drones and James Rhodes.[42] After the mission goes south and Mockingbird is left stranded on AIM Island,[volume & issue needed] Taskmaster works undercover to free her.[volume & issue needed] But when he gets the chance to get her off the island, she doesn't respond to anything he says until both are captured. While being interrogated, Taskmaster is shot and seemingly killed by Mockingbird apparently under the control of Scientist Supreme (Andrew Forson).[43] However, Mentallo discovered that Mockingbird purposely missed any vitals and Taskmaster survived.[44]
At the time when Captain America was brainwashed into being a Hydra sleeper agent by Red Skull's clone using the powers of Kobik, Taskmaster later relocated to Bagalia where he became its sheriff.[45]
When Taskmaster and Black Ant (Eric O'Grady's Life Model Decoy counterpart) found out what was done to Captain America to be made into a Hydra sleeper agent, they planned to have a parley with Maria Hill to discuss this with only for the new Madame Hydra (Elisa Sinclair) to get to them first.[46] Impressed with the fighting skills of the two of them, Madame Hydra made them bodyguards.[47]
During the "Secret Empire" storyline, Taskmaster appears as a member of Hydra's Avengers.[48] During the battle in Washington DC, Taskmaster and Black Ant witness their teammate Odinson having enough of working for Hydra and striking them down. The two of them defect from Hydra and free the captive Champions. When Taskmaster and Black Ant asks for them to put in a good word for them, Spider-Man webs them up anyway.[49]
Taskmaster and Black Ant later attack Empire State University where Dr. Curt Connors was teaching a class. As the inhibitor chip prevents Connors into turning into Lizard, Peter Parker sneaks off to become Spider-Man. During his fight with Black Ant and Taskmaster, Spider-Man is exposed to the Isotope Genome Accelerator that splits him from his Peter Parker side.[50]
In a prelude to "Hunted", Taskmaster and Black Ant work with Kraven the Hunter and Arcade in capturing some animal-themed characters for his upcoming hunt.[51] Black Ant and Taskmaster are talking about the Hunt. Taskmaster betrays Black Ant saying that Black Ant is an animal-themed villain and tasers Black Ant to get more money.[52] Lizard finds Taskmaster at the Pop-Up with No Name. Lizard proceeds to poisons him by slipping a poison into her beer. Lizard offers Taskmaster the antidote if he can take Lizard to Central Park. While traveling there, Lizard and Taskmaster defeat Vermin, freeing innocent bystanders. Taskmaster helps put a taser chip in Lizard's body, and takes him to Arcade.[53] Taskmaster frees Lizard from his binds and Lizard tells Taskmaster that the poison will wear off in 24 hours.[54] Taskmaster makes off with Black Ant before Yellowjacket, Human Fly, Razorback, Toad, and White Rabbit can take revenge on him. As they leave, Taskmaster states that Black Ant would've done the same for him. When Black Ant asks "Do you mean the betrayal part or the rescue part?" All Taskmaster can say is "yeah!"[55]
During the "King in Black" storyline, Taskmaster is among the villains recruited by Mayor Wilson Fisk to be part of his Thunderbolts at the time of Knull's invasion. While having argued with Mister Fear over who was the first villain to wear a skull mask, Taskmaster becomes the de facto field leader of the group. Following the deaths of Ampere and Snakehead, Taskmaster couldn't stop Rhino from walking off and tells the remaining members not to help the Manhattan Defenders. He and the Thunderbolts arrive at Ravencroft to meet with Norman Osborn who Mayor Fisk claims can help them defeat Knull.[56]

Tradition of stones
Indiaâs history, dating back to 4500 BC and our history since 1631 has been influenced considerably by the disposition, development, and use of stones and other construction materials. Dimension stones have also left deep imprints on the architectural heritage of the country. Temples, forts, and palaces of Ancient Indian Civilization have been carved out of locally available stones. The World famous Taj Mahal at Agra was constructed from Indian marble. Some of the rock-cut structures include Khajuraho Temple, Elephanta Caves, and Konark Temple. Besides, all major archeological excavations have revealed exquisitely carved statuettes and carvings in stone. Ancient Buddhist monuments like the Sanchi Stupa of 3rd century BC have also been carved out of stone.
This tradition of Stone Architecture has continued to the present era, with most of the important modern buildings in India like the Presidential House, Parliament House, and Supreme Court made from high-quality sandstone of Rajasthan. The Bahaâi House of Worship of New Delhi stands testimony to the relevance of marble in modern Indian architecture.
Stones are still the mainstays of civil construction in India, with stones being used extensively in public buildings, hotels, and temples. It is increasingly being used in homes, with the use of stones now penetrating amongst the growing middle class of India. The success of the commercial stone industry solely depends upon defects in rock stone. Natural defects in ornamental commercial rock deposits adversely affect the quality of rock deposits. Detection of natural defects in the decorative and dimensional stone industry plays a vital role in the quality assessment.
India is a pioneer in the exploration, mining of commercial rock deposits, and establishing a firm base for the stone industry. India, with an estimated resource of about 1900 million cu m, comprising over 500 shades of Dimension Stone Granites, accounts for about 205 of the world resources. Of the 500 varieties being traded in the world market, nearly half of them are from India. Commercially viable granite and other rock deposits are reported from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and others.
