Sporting CP 1-0 Aberdeen: Derek McInnes’ side falter in Portugal
Sporting’s players celebrate their early winner against Aberdeen
Aberdeen bowed out of the Europa League despite a plucky performance against a depleted Sporting side in Lisbon.
Facing an opponent that was missing nine players because of the Covid-19 outbreak, the Scots switched off early on as Tiago Tomas struck.
Derek McInnes’ side remained in the game but rarely looked like troubling their Portuguese hosts.
It is the sixth time in seven years Aberdeen have dropped out at the third qualifying round stage.
Sporting host Lask in next week’s play-off.
Reaction & as it happened
This was a step into the unknown for an Aberdeen side beginning life without Scott McKenna following his move to Nottingham Forest.
A raft of Covid-19 casualties added a touch of mystique to the challenge in Portugal, the only certainty being those who were brought in from the cold were unlikely to be mugs.
And so it proved to be the case, with the hosts wrenching open the Aberdeen defence after just seven minutes. Luciano Vietto collected the ball after some dithering and turned for goal.
One drop of the shoulder and a shuttled ball out to his right caught the defence – Andrew Considine in particular – napping. Tomas was clinical in steering the ball past Joe Lewis.
To their credit, Aberdeen rallied. McInnes’ men showed bravery on the ball, but struggled to craft any real chances.
The closest they came was a deep Dylan McGeouch cross that Antonio Adam tipped over easily.
In the second half, Jonny Hayes was afforded space down the left, but the former Celtic man blazed over when he should have done better.
In truth, a mixture of poor finishing and instinctive goalkeeping kept the tie alive at the other end.
A scramble in the box was defused by Lewis’ sprawling save to halt Boges Cabral scrambling in a second, while Tomas somehow steered a free header wide after the break with the goal gaping.
Man of the match – Jonny Hayes
Nobody truly shone for Aberdeen in Portugal, but Jonny Hayes can be content with his efforts. While he did lash wildly at a half chance in the second half, the Aberdeen wing back put in a power of work on the flank
What did we learn?
Aberdeen lacked a cutting edge in attack. Several times they got into good positions against a classy outfit, but couldn’t muster anything to trouble them.
Crosses weren’t capitalised on, and any stray balls in the box went unclaimed. Matters could have been different if the injured Sam Cosgrove was in their ranks.
However, McInnes can be content with a showing in trying circumstances. Regardless of the fact Sporting were without several players and their coach, this was never going to be easy.
Add in that they were coming off of a 3-0 hiding to Motherwell and without McKenna, and Aberdeen deserve credit for being competitive, even if they lacked thrust in attack.
However, there may well be a feeling of what could have been after never really laying a glove on Sporting.
What’s next?
Aberdeen are back on domestic duty with a trip to Dingwall to face Ross County (15:00 GMT).

Celtic top after goalless draw at Livingston
Celtic moved top of the Premiership on goal difference as tenacious Livingston frustrated the champions in a goalless draw in West Lothian.
Home goalkeeper Liam Kelly made an impressive save on 85 minutes, pushing away a fierce strike from Tom Rogic.
Kelly also made two good stops to deny Ryan Christie, while James Forrest was narrowly off target with a rising shot.
Livingston defended like lions throughout and held firm in the face of a late surge from Celtic.

Controversial Boyata scores only goal as Celtic struggle past Hamilton
Dedryck Boyata responded to a fans’ banner claiming he was “not fit to wear the jersey” by scoring the only goal as Celtic beat Hamilton.
The Belgian, the subject of a rejected bid from Fulham, ruled himself out of recent games, claiming he was injured.
Manager Brendan Rodgers refuted the defender’s claims, and said he was “sad” at the situation.
But Boyata’s close range finish earned Celtic the points despite a lacklustre performance from the champions.
The victory moves Celtic into second in the Premiership before next Sunday’s Old Firm derby with Rangers.
Before that, Rodgers’s side host FK Suduva of Lithuania at Celtic Park on Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League play-off round, having drawn the first leg 1-1.
Hamilton, meanwhile, remain in the bottom half of the table, but will take consolation from the concession of just one goal in two away games after a home humbling by Hearts.

Lafferty volley earns Hearts win over champions Celtic
A second-half volley from Kyle Lafferty clinched an enthralling victory for Hearts over Celtic.
The Northern Irishman produced a stunning finish on 57 minutes from the edge of the box to fire the Tynecastle club to their second win in two games.
Lafferty had two efforts saved in the first half by Craig Gordon while Mikael Lustig, Leigh Griffiths and Callum McGregor all went close for Celtic.
But Craig Levein’s side held on to go clear at the top of the Premiership.
Seven players were booked during the fiery encounter including Steven Naismith, who appeared to kick out at Jonny Hayes on the stroke of half-time.
While it was a successful afternoon for the Edinburgh club, they finished the game without captain Christophe Berra, who went off just before the break with a hamstring injury.
THEME (CHANGES)
With Celtic’s Champions League future anything but certain following the 1-1 draw with AEK Athens earlier in the week, Brendan Rodgers dipped into his squad and rested some key players.
As his frustrated search for new players continues, he wouldn’t be drawn on whether he thinks the current squad is strong enough to fight and win on two fronts. On this showing, he’ll be concerned.
Jozo Simunovic looked slack for most of the afternoon and he gave Hearts possession that led to the goal. Uche Ikpeazu did well with the cross and Lafferty’s finish was exquisite but the mistake certainly led to the chance.
Kouassi Eboue struggled up against a Hearts midfield that fought and scrapped for everything in a fierce contest that was fought mostly in the middle of the park. Jonny Hayes was favoured over James Forrest on the right but that didn’t work out either.
The visitors looked slicker and more dangerous when the big boys emerged from the bench but by that time it was too late. Making so many changes against an impressive Hearts side was always going to be a gamble. In the Georgie sunshine, it backfired for the champions.
More to follow.
