It’s Never Been Like This Before
A/N: My OC Rina is off to post-season practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in preparation for their run to Super Bowl LV.
Hooking a face mask over her ear, Rina took a deep breath and exited her silver BMW X3. She was here at Advent Health Training Facility in Tampa Bay, FL, the practice facility of the Buccaneers. There was going to be an open-to-media and guest practice in preparation for the playoffs. Tom had asked her to attend so he could get her breakdown and observations. Back in New England, the coaching staff expected and encouraged her participation. Here though, she was just another name on the guest list, so she wouldn't have the same type of access she would have to the Patriots. Coach Arians had been nothing but kind, but it was clear there was no trust for this long-time Patriots organization member. She didn't even dare bring her camera for fear of being accused of trying to cheat. She slipped her Louis Vuitton backpack straps on as she crossed the parking lot before encountering the gaggle of press members waiting to get in.
Slipping the mask over her nose and mouth and securing it behind her other ear, she drew the fitted ballcap down a bit tighter. As always, she wanted to be as inconspicuous as possible, but often that was not even a remote possibility. The reporter beside her looked her up and down from about four feet away and recognized her.
"Sabrina McMahon, right? I'm surprised to see you here; what brings you to the Bucs facility?" He got his notebook out as he awaited a reply.
"I'm here to watch a friend; they asked me to come. Moral support, that's all." She gave him as kind of an expression as was possible behind the face mask. A few other reporters took notice; some also jotted down the quote. She shifted her weight from hip to hip and waited as patiently as she could. Once the mass was allowed to start to trickle in, Rina slipped her backpack off and opened it for inspection. Security looked her up and down before turning their flashlight on and poking around the bag. It revealed a wallet, notepad and pen, and hand sanitizer. They waved her through, and she was handed a lanyard with a badge. The badge read guest, along with the last name of the player that had vouched for her. Taking her cap off momentarily, she slipped it over her head before replacing the worn blue hat atop her head. Staff directed the way to the practice field and bleachers for the expanded crowd. Rina looked along the area and saw players stretching. It was a familiar football atmosphere, guys laughing and having fun, some being very serious and some looking like they had a rough night. As usual, I looked for him. Finding number twelve, I waited until he looked toward the sidelines and gave him a wave.

Chapter Three: Need The Sun To Break
Would You Call That Love
Pairing: Chris Evans x Raina Morrison (OC)
Rating: PG to PG-13 (Might be 18+ for some chapters)
Description: There was always that one person Chris Evans tended to turn to when he was not in a committed relationship, Raina Morrison. He could confide in her about things going on in his life that he did not feel comfortable talking to his family or close friends about. Chris and Raina were able to establish a way to openly communicate with one another, but also being respectful of the other’s time and needs. It was the only constant “relationship” he had, but without all the nonsense of trying to build a life together. A “friends with benefits” situation. However, what happens when Chris starts rethinking his “relationship” with Raina and if either are willing to pursue something more?
Chapter Rating: PG
Warnings: Mentions the death of a loved one.
Word Count: 3,161
Author’s Note: This chapter was tough, particularly the beginning, since it is very emotional. I hope this chapter provides a little bit more insight into who Raina is as a person.
Feedback is always welcomed. If you want to be tagged, please let me know.
Sadly, I do not know Chris Evans or anyone in his family, and this is just a fictional take on his life. I do not permit this fic to be reposted on other platforms.
Again, thanks to @southerngracela for the support.
*Note: Updated for edits on grammar and punctuation.
September 26, 2010
Returning to the home ground after their loss to the New York Jets, the New England Patriots were looking to rebound with a win against the Buffalo Bills. The Patriots were able to score a 7-yeard touchdown thanks to the star quarterback, Tom Brady. Anyone from New England loved Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. He was their golden boy, despite not even being from the area. A west coaster who grew up in California could melt the hearts of any contemptuous New Englander.
For Chris Evens, just saying the name ‘Tom Brady’ around him would result in him turning into a blushing schoolgirl. Tom brought pride back the Patriots with six Superbowl championships, nine Conference championships, and seventeen Division championships. For any New Englander, it was a feeling they were going to hold onto and cherish.
“Go…go…go…YES!!” Chris cheered as he got up from his couch to cheer Tom Brady’s second touchdown.
“What happened?” asked Scott as he rushed back from the kitchen when he heard Chris celebrating.
“Brady just scored a TD,” replied Chris.
“Fuck! I mean, yes! This is the last time I get up to get you a beer from the fridge. You get them yourselves from now on. Another commercial! Give me a break.” Scott scolded, taking his seat next to Chris on the couch.
“The Pats need to win this. The team has already lost to the New York Giants and Jets. If they lose to the Bills, then Raina will never let me hear the end of it. She loves to gloat and rub it in my face whenever New York wins anything,” Chris shared as he took a sip of his beer.
Scott was aware of how Chris would essentially light up or blush whenever he talked about Raina. One had to pay attention, or it would not be visible, but Scott was a master at reading his brother’s body language and emotions.
“Speaking of our favorite chanteuse, you ever going to ask her out, or are you just going to pine for the rest of your life?” asked Scott bluntly. He was never one to beat around the bush when getting information, especially with his older brother.
“What are you talking about? Raina and I are just friends. Good friends. Men and women can be friends. Just like Tara and me,” Chris defended strongly, “Why are you always pushing this narrative that I like Raina more than merely a friend?”
“Because you do. I can see it. Ma can see it. Shanna and Carly see it. Blind people see it,” Scott proceeded to enlighten Chris.
Chris scoffed and reiterated as calmly as he could to Scott, “Okay, hold up. Do you guys just sit around and gossip about Raina and me? We are friends! That’s it! Nothing more, nothing less.”
When the game returned from commercial break, Chris’s phone rang. He was inclined to ignore it, but when he saw it was from Raina, he answered.
“Speaking of Raina, here she is calling, probably to talk smack about the game. ‘Hello?’” Chris spoke into his phone happily. However, his mood changed when he heard sobs on the other end.
“Rai, what’s wrong? What happened?” Chris asked, concerned as he sat up straighter.
Scott perked up and asked, “What’s going on?”
Chris merely shrugged and asked Raina again, “What’s going on? Are you okay? Talk to me!”
When she was able to catch her breath, Raina cried out, “My mom died.”
“WHAT!” Chris yelled, jumping up from the couch and began pacing back and forth in his living room. Scott straightened up and watched Chris intently in the hope of finding out what is going on with their close friend.
“She died last night… in the hospital. It was a heart attack,” Raina choked out as best as she could while crying over the death of her mother, “We thought it was just the flu. She was feeling well all day…throwing up…not looking great. My dad called the paramedics, and when they got to the house, they told us that it was just the flu and that it would best not take mom in as she would only be waiting in the ER. But then we had to call them back an hour later because she got worse. She was barely incoherent and was drooling,” Raina stopped to catch her breath and sob but went on to share, “It was awful, Chris. You should have seen the look on the paramedics’ faces when they came back and saw her condition. You could see that they realized they fucked up. Oh my God! My mom is dead, Chris. What am I going to do?”
Chris was at a loss for words. He had no idea what to say or what to do. All Chris could do was listen to her desperate sobs. It was not long before he felt tears begin to sting his eyes. Chris sat down at the dining room table, put his head in his free hand, and cried along with his best friend.
July 24, 2019
“Only one more night to go. You excited, kid?” asked Jerry, Raina’s manager, as he sat on the couch in her dressing room. She was on break from rehearsals.
“I go back and forth between wanting to throw-up to crying. I am not quite sure if it is crying out of joy or because I am so nervous,” she revealed honestly.
“What do you have to be nervous about? You have done this show a bunch of times. You have gotten raved reviews from the workshops and the previews. You are going to kill it,” said Jerry and continued with, “When are you going to realize that you are one of the best performers out of your peers? Hell, Variety magazine referred to you as the ‘the best vocalist of her generation.’ That is a huge praise. You wouldn’t have come this far if people thought you didn’t have what people call ‘it.’ You’re no flash in the pan, kid.”
“Thank you, Jerry. I love you; you know that. I am so lucky to have you in my corner,” Raina replied with a smile, but then asked, “What am I going to do when you leave me, though? Who am I going to get to watch out for me?”
“That is not something you have to worry about today. I am not going anywhere, Raina. You talk to your dad lately?”
“Uh…yeah. He’s doing alright,” Raina said as she sat down next to Jerry on the couch and shared that her dad was coming to see the show.
“Wow! No offense, but I am surprised he is leaving Long Island to come to see the show.”
“You and me both. Dad is making a trip the week of his birthday in August. I think I am going to ask Chris to join, if he can, that is. He and my dad have always gotten along, and I am sure both would be happy to get to see each other….and why are you giving me that look, Jerry?” asked Raina curiously.
Jerry just chuckled and shook his head, “Nothing, little one. I am simply happy that you and Chris have managed to stay friends for this long. Just friends, right?”
Crossing her arms over her chest, Raina responded, “Just come out and say what you want to say, Jerry. Lay it on me. Don’t hold back now.”
“Okay. Have you ever thought about being more than friends with Chris?”
Taking a deep breath in and letting out, Raina contemplated her thoughts about Chris. Had she ever thought about being more than friends with Chris? Technically, they were more than friends. They started a friend with benefits relationship five years ago, but no one knew about it, especially people in their inner circles. Their relationship was just for them without the fear of anyone’s judgment and scrutiny.
She got a taste of that when she dated Tom Hiddleston back in 2016. Neither fully comprehended how much their coupling would turn their worlds upside down. The media frenzy was something she and Tom had never experienced. For some reason, people could not wrap their heads around the notion that this English actor who was posh and well-educated would date a songstress from New York who had a reputation of being reserved and reclusive. It did not help when both fandoms got involved in the mix. Tom’s fans were brutal in their critiques of Raina. If they were not ragging on her clothes, hair, or overall looks, they were ragging on her music or personality. Social media allowed people to smear Raina’s reputation to the extreme.
None of this she blamed on Tom as there was not much she could do. She knew he did not condone the horrid behavior of some of his fans. However, there was a small part where Raina wished he said something to get them to back off during that time. It was an eye-opening experience for Raina in certain areas but mostly left her confused about what she wanted in a partner.
With Chris, their friendship grew naturally. It was as if the universe intervened and made sure these two individuals were important fixtures in each other’s lives.
“Jerry, you know better than anyone that if you find a real friend in this business, then you hold on to them. That is all I am going to say on this matter.”
Jerry put his hands up in surrender, “Fair enough. I trust you know what you are doing, kid.”
Later that night, while Raina was lounging on her couch in her penthouse, she went through the text exchange she had with Chris throughout the day.
1:30 p.m.
Chris: We’ve landed. After we get our bags, we’re going to head to the hotel.
2:45 p.m.
Raina: Hey, been super busy with interviews and last-minute rehearsals this morning and afternoon. Glad you guys made it safely. Where are you guys staying?
Chris: The Frederick Hotel.
Raina: That is a nice hotel. Not far from where I live too. Only a few blocks away from each other. Do you all want to come over for a nightcap?
Chris: Shouldn’t you be resting up for tomorrow?
Raina: Please, no amount of rest will help ease my worries. Murphy’s Law, remember. If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong. I guess I just have to accept that some things are out of my control.
Chris: You got nothing to worry about.
Raina. I have to get back to rehearsals. Talk to you later. Bye.
6:30 p.m.
Chris: You home yet?
Raina: Yeah. What are you guys up to?
Chris: Getting ready to head out to dinner at Serafina. Do you want to come along to join us?
Raina: Thanks, but not tonight. It’d be best for me to take it easy for the rest of the night.
Chris: Gotcha. Do you mind if I stop by later?
Raina: If you plan on stopping by, then can you please bring me some takeout please?
Chris: What do you want?
By eight o’clock, Chris was sitting on Raina’s couch scrolling through Netflix while she ate the minestrone he brought from the restaurant.
“Goddamn, this soup is good. What did you eat?” Raina asked as she continued to slurp her soup.
“Cacio e Pepe. Then the three of us split dessert. Well, mom and Scott ate most of it. You know I’m not a dessert person,” informed Chris and continued with, “What do you want to watch and please don’t say Gilmore Girls. You know I can’t stand that show.”
“Don’t hate on Gilmore Girls.”
“Uh…you hate on Gilmore Girls all the time. If you can’t stand them so much, then why do you watch it?” asked Chris.
“Because, despite all of its flaws, the show has a lot of heart. No, don’t pick Schitt’s Creek. You haven’t seen it yet, and we need to do a proper marathon viewing party. No, not Friends or The Office. I’m not in the mood to watch Parks and Recreation. Ooh, Derry Girls! Pick that one,” ordered Raina.
When Raina finished her dinner, she got up to put her bowl in the kitchen sink and asked Chris if he wanted something to drink.
“Just water.”
Opening the fridge to retrieve two bottles of water, she saw the gift she got from Chris nestled on the top shelf. It brought a smile to her face seeing the gift box. While she did open the box to see what was inside, she had yet to open the fortune cookie.
“Thanks for the gift. The fortune cookie looks good. I can’t wait to eat it,” said Raina as he handed Chris his bottled water.
He took the water from and replied,” Oh, you haven’t opened the fortune yet?”
“Nah, I was gonna wait until you got here.”
The message that Chris included in the gift was still very much on his mind. He was continually wondering how Raina would perceive it. Would she be happy? Mad? Upset? It was driving him mad, not knowing.
“Maybe you should open it now?” Chris suggested hesitantly.
“Yeah, sure. Can you get it? I’m going to brush my teeth. I need to get the minestrone taste out of my mouth.”
Raina sprinted from the couch to the stairs as Chris slowly stood up from the sofa. He continued his slow pace to the kitchen and opened the fridge to take out the top shelf’s gift box. As Chris stared at the box, he realized that the content of what was inside could change his relationship with Raina forever. It could bring them closer or put distance between them.
“All you have to do is be honest. Just be honest about your feelings. Even if Raina doesn’t feel the same way, she won’t drop you as friends. You mean a lot to her, and she values her friendship with you,” the voice in Chris’s head reassured.
The sound of excited clapping broke Chris out of his thoughts, and he looked up to see Raina skipping over to him happily. He pushed the box towards Raina, and she began opening it. She carefully pulled out the fortune cookie, which was wrapped in a clear plastic bag. Slowly opening the plastic, she pulled out the cookie and placed it on the clean counter.
“Oh my God. It’s so pretty. A chocolate lover’s dream,” she admired and hugged Chris.
“You’re welcome, my little cookie monster.”
“I almost don’t want to ruin it.”
“Well, you going to have to see my message inside,” Chris told her.
“Oh right, there would be a message inside it. I was too amazed by its beauty that I forgot about that part,” said Raina and began to break the fortune cookie in half.
Before she could read the message, Chris spoke up, “Raina, wait! Before you read that, just…”
However, she proceeded to read the message before Chris get his words out. He could not breathe while she read and stared intently at her as he mouthed the words he wrote.
Lips trembling and eyes watering from the tears about the form, Raina immediately hugged Chris. He was shocked at first but instantly hugged her back.
When pulling back, she said, “Thank you. This is so sweet,” wiping the tears from her eyes, Raina continued, “I’m going to keep this forever. I’m going to frame it one of those fireproof picture frames, you know. Or the one that is used to hold the U.S. Constitution. I’m going to get one of those, and this will go in it.”
She went in for another hug and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. Raina took a piece of the fortune cookie and popped it into her mouth. “Alright, I’m going to put this in a safe place so that it won’t get ruined. I’ll be right back.”
Chris stared at her retreating back and was left confused. That was not how he expected it to go down. “You were worried she’d be upset. She was happy. More than happy. But did she get the underlying meaning of his words?” Chris’s inner voice asked himself.
The relationship between Chris and Raina was so blurred that she could not see a declaration of love when it was literal in front of her. However, Chris could not blame her for not being able to read between the lines. She had so much on her plate at the moment that maybe she was able to process his words.
“Okay, I placed it in a clear file holder so nothing can spill on it,” said Raina when she came back into the kitchen area and asked Chris if he was okay when she saw a worrying look on his face.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m glad you liked your gift. You deserved it. I should start heading out. You need your rest for tomorrow, and I don’t want to keep you up.”
Raina was taken back by his sudden change in demeanor. She noticed he looked a little sad and defeated for some reason. “You don’t have to leave just yet. I mean we can still watch some TV and relax. You okay, Chris? She asked again.
“I’m good. Tired is all. It’s been a long day.”
Raina nodded and followed Chris to the front door. “Chris,” she spoke and looked at him. His ocean blue eyes were one of her favorite things about him. Often, she could find herself lost in staring at them. Reaching out the tenderly grab his face, she placed a kiss on his lips. It did not take long for Chris to reciprocate. He pulled Raina closer to wrap his arms around her. Opening her mouth to allow his tongue inside, she allowed Chris to take the lead.
Raina slowly began to walk them both back over to the living area, but Chris proceeded to step back.
“I should go. I don’t think it would be a good idea if we, we shouldn’t…not tonight,” Chris professed, although it killed him to turn her down. Chris wanted nothing more than to stay the night.
Feeling a little defeated, Raina nodded and said, “Okay. I understand.”
Reaching for the door handle, Chris said, “I’ll see you tomorrow. Sleep tight.”
With a small smile on her face, Raina countered with, “See you tomorrow. Goodnight, Christopher.”
“Goodnight, Raina,” he said, but Raina could hear a hint of sadness in his voice, and she for the life of her could not understand why.
When Chris finally left, Raina went back into the kitchen and put away the fortune cookie.
“I love you too, Chris. More than you realize,” Raina said to herself. Once again, she could feel tears about to form.
“It’s going to be a long and sleepless night,” she said to herself as she prepared to get ready for bed.

Notes taken during Super Bowl XXXIX
PREGAME
ARGH, JOE BUCK. It's a Fox joint with Buck, Collinsworth, and Aikman in the booth.
Collinsworth: If the Patriots win this, they're a dynasty. (It would be their third in four years.)
Buck: Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is likely going to the Browns after this game to be their new head coach.
FIRST QUARTER
Eagles receive the opening kick. Rod Hood with a great return to the Philadelphia 39.
First play is a pass. Patriots blitz, McNabb scrambles and throws it away.
Second play is a completion to Terrell Owens, who's playing with a recently surgically-repaired broken leg. Had missed six weeks.
Third down, Patriots blitz, McNabb somehow avoids being tackled and instead fumbles. Oops. Patriots recover.
D’oh.
Collinsworth: Every time the Eagles run a spread formation, the Patriots blitz.
Eagles challenge the fumble call and it's overturned. McNabb's knee was clearly down before the fumble. Philadelphia to punt after a game-opening three and out.
Patriots' first play, the Eagles blitz, Corey Dillon picks it up, and Brady hits Branch for 15 yards. This stuff seems so easy for New England and so difficult for everyone else.
Patriots go deep downfield on third and 9. Incomplete and Josh Miller will punt it away. Great punt, Eagles take over at their own 7.
Fox runs video of Bill Belichick going to the wrong sideline before the game.
Belichick realizes he’s in the wrong place.
Eagles go three and out again. Two stuffed runs to Westbrook and a completion underneath to Owens. Patriots get it at their own 31.
Brady is 8-0 career in the postseason.
Now the Patriots go three and out. Not much offense in the early going - just that Brady-to-Branch throw in terms of substantial gains.
Eagles: 6 plays, 6 yards.
Screen pass to Westbrook works - they get a first down and 12 yards or so.
Collinsworth: Eagles have one of the best screen pass offenses in the league, Patriots have one of the best screen pass defenses.
Philadelphia converts a third and 9, just barely. It looked like a really generous spot to me, but nobody's asking my opinion.
Buck: Brian Westbrook's athleticism makes him the X factor in this game, not Terrell Owens. Aikman: Yeah, he creates matchup problems - you can line him up at wide receiver or in the backfield.
McNabb finds Owens coming across the middle and there's nobody there to tackle T.O. Owens runs for 30 and there's personal foul on the defense tacked on to the end of the play. First and goal from the Patriots' 8.
Collinsworth: That was a major illegal pick play. Officials completely missed it.
McNabb throws one up for grabs in the end zone and it's picked off by Asante Samuel, who returns it for 35 yards or so. Penalty on the defense, though, so the Eagles get away with one. That was a terrible decision by McNabb.
Welp. McNabb makes a throw that's every bit as bad on the next play. He telegraphed it, then lofted it. Picked off by Rodney Harrison and the Patriots take over at their own 3.
Patriots go three and out. Philadelphia gave away the ball, but they'll get it back in good field position. Westbrook returns it to the New England 45.
Good lord, what's gotten into McNabb? First play is lofted downfield again and maybe should have been picked. Don't do that, Donovan. It's a terrible idea.
Third down, L.J. Smith makes the catch underneath, but he's stripped. Patriots recover. That may have cost them a long field goal attempt.
Quarter ends. No score.
SECOND QUARTER
First play of the second quarter: Brady sacked on third and long. Josh Miller will punt again.
Cutaway: Will Smith cheering.
Chris Myers: Tom Brady has had a tough time with the passing of his grandmother. Felt awful that he couldn't go to the vigil because he was preparing for this game. She was 94.
Third down, play action pass, McNabb downfield to Pinkston on a deep crossing route. Great throw, out to the Philly 38.
Oh, wow. McNabb under all kinds of pressure, steps up, buys time, and gets it deep downfield to Pinkston. Great catch. They're inside the New England 20.
Now Westbrook for 10. It'll be first and goal from the 6.
Plays in opponent's territory: Philadelphia 12, New England 0.
Another fantastic throw from McNabb. Rifles it over the middle to L.J. Smith. Smith fought his way through three defenders to get open. 7-0 Philadelphia.
Patriots offense: 4 possessions, 3 three-and-outs, 4 punts.
New England puts together a couple big screen passes to Corey Dillon. They gained 25 yards or so on those two plays.
Collinsworth: Biggest difference between these two teams as you look at it is that the Patriots can run the ball more effectively than the Eagles.
Complete pass to Givens down the middle. The ball comes out on the tackle, everybody is confused, the Eagles pick it up, stand around, eventually decide to run with it, and gain 20 yards on the return. New England challenges the call. It looks like he was down, but there was a bobble during the tackle.
The knee is down and the ball isn’t out.
Yep, call overturned. New England keeps the ball. That was the right call. Aikman says the officials did the right thing letting the play go and checking later. Only problem is that the Patriots had to burn a challenge.
Wow. Great, powerful 25 yard run from Corey Dillon through an eight-man front. Carries a tackler inside the 10.
Brady fumbles on play action on second and goal. Looked like he fell on it, but Philadelphia came up with the ball. Huge turnover and a very un-Patriots-like un-Brady-like play.
Third and long, McNabb rolls and throws it away. They'll punt. Aikman says they change footballs on every play in the Super Bowl and that's why the quarterbacks are having some trouble with grip. The balls are slick. Settle down, Beavis.
New England converts on third down, for once. Brady to Branch for a short gain, but it's enough.
Aikman: Brady's greatest asset is his demeanor. You never see him flustered, and that confidence rubs off on his teammates.
Brady to Troy Brown inside the 10. First and goal for the Patriots as we reach the two minute warning.
Second down, David Givens is wide open in the end zone and Brady finds him. Touchdown. Tie game, 7-7, with 1:10 left in the first half. Lito Sheppard completely blew that coverage.
Wide open. It’s never a good sign for the defense when a receiver waves.
Good kickoff return out to the 41, but it's coming back. Holding on the Eagles.
Eagles go no-huddle as time begins to tick away. McNabb to Pinkston out to the 40. Timeout called. 0:10 left in the half.
Next play is an incomplete pass. 0:04 left, so you'd assume they'll either down this or chuck it into the end zone.
...or run a draw play. Westbrook gains 20 or so meaningless yards as the half ends. 7-7 at the break.
HALFTIME
This is a recording of the halftime show from the local Boston affiliate. Commercials: NASCAR, local car dealership, MC Hammer for Nationwide - "Life Comes At You Fast", McDonalds breakfast sandwiches, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Michaels diamonds.
First half highlights.
Jimmy Johnson: You're going to have a low-scoring game when you have two good defenses, regardless of the offenses.
Halftime show is Paul McCartney. So that's good.
Promo for The OC, promo for House, promo for the NFL Network.
McCartney. Drive My Car, Get Back, Live and Let Die, Hey Jude
They spelled out “na na na na” in the stadium during Hey Jude. Because of course.
THIRD QUARTER
Patriots receive the kickoff.
Third and 6. Eagles blitz and the Patriots do what they always seem to do. They pick it up and Brady finds Branch coming across the middle for a big gain.
Brady's last 12 passes: 11-12, 114 yards, 1 TD
Third and 10 - stop me if you've heard this before - Brady to Branch. This time for 16. Branch recognized a zone defense and sat in the hole.
Eagles keep blitzing and Brady keeps torching them. Branch again. Out of bounds at the 2.
First and goal. Brady passes to linebacker/occasional tight end Mike Vrabel, who makes a juggling catch in the end zone. Great catch. There are flags on the play, but it's defensive holding. The touchdown stands and Vrabel has his second career Super Bowl touchdown. 14-7 Patriots. This is the first time this postseason the Eagles have trailed.
First play of the Eagles' drive, McNabb to Owens, slant. Nearly to midfield.
Collinsworth: If this game is going to be won by Philadelphia, it's going to be won by McNabb throwing the ball.
Third down, McNabb runs the same deep pass to Pinkston he completed in the first half. It falls incomplete and Dirk Johnson comes on for his fourth punt of the day. A fantastic 45-yard return by Troy Brown, but it's coming back. Instead, the Patriots start at their own 8.
Second play of the drive, Michael Lewis hits Brady as he throws. Ball pops up but falls incomplete. Patriots caught a break. Could easily have been an interception deep in their own territory.
New England goes three and out. Josh Miller will punt from inside his own 5. Westbrook fumbles the punt out of bounds. There's a flag on the play - holding on the receiving team. Oof.
Man, Terrell Owens is all over the place. He's caught a ton of passes. After an Owens catch and a Westbrook run, the Eagles have crossed midfield.
Collinsworth: Westbrook says the Patriots defense is bigger than the Philly offense, but the Eagles are quicker.
McNabb is heating up. Completes a pass to Greg Lewis, then Owens, and they're inside the 30. Lewis again to the 15.
Aikman: Patriots are playing soft and not jamming receivers. Eagles have had trouble when they're jammed.
“Soft coverage” is putting it mildly.
Third and 3, McNabb throws behind Westbrook, but the running back makes a fantastic catch for a first down.
Great catch.
Aikman: Nobody covered Freddie Mitchell on that play. Would have been a touchdown if McNabb had seen him.
Collinsworth: Great play by Westbrook to use the official as a pick to get away from the DB.
Westbrook (#36) uses the official to get some separation from the DB.
DANGEROUS THROW, but it works. McNabb somehow threads the needle through two Patriots and hits Westbrook going into the end zone. We're tied at 14. That could have easily been a pick, but he zipped it through the smallest of openings.
Patriots get a first down on a screen pass. Eagles expected a pass downfield instead of a screen.
Fake reverse to Deion Branch and instead, they throw a swing pass to him . They get 8 or so. Neat play.
Kevin Faulk runs for another 8. Patriots steadily moving downfield. They're inside the 30.
End of the third quarter. 14-14. This is the first Super Bowl ever to be tied after 3.
FOURTH QUARTER
Aikman: Eagles are playing with an 8 man front but the Patriots are still chewing them up with interior runs.
Eagles yelling "watch the screen!" before the snap. It's a screen and it works. Kevin Faulk gets inside the 5. First and goal.
An easy touchdown for Corey Dillon on first down. Patriots on top 21-14.
Third and long, McNabb chucks it deep but it's out of bounds. Receiver never had a chance. Johnson will punt again.
Collinsworth: The story of the game is these young Patriots cornerbacks. They're playing an unbelievable game.
Second and 13 on the Patriots' drive, Deion Branch makes a great catch, taking it away from DB Sheldon Brown. Perfect coverage, but Branch was even better. 19 yard gain.
Aikman: I've always said a great throw beats great coverage, and we just saw that.
That catch was Branch's 11th of the game, tying the all-time Super Bowl record. (Dan Ross in XVI, Jerry Rice in XXIII.)
Roughing the passer is tacked on to the end of the play. Patriots inside the Philadelphia 20.
Patriots stall inside the Eagles 10. Chip shot field goal coming from Adam Vinatieri. Got it. 24-14, 8:40 left on the clock.
Aikman: If the Patriots win this game, it's a more impressive run than when the Cowboys also won three out of four in the 90s.
Fox graphic: No team has ever won the Super Bowl after having trailed by 8+ points in the second half.
A big gain from McNabb to Owens on a slant. It's single coverage and he made the cornerback miss on the tackle.
T.O. leaves a cornerback in the dust after a video game-type move.
Next play, McNabb throws high over Dorsey Levens and it's picked off by linebacker Tedy Bruschi. For a second or two, I think people are booing McNabb, but then I realize they're probably saying Bruuuuuuuuu.
6:00 and counting, third down for the Patriots. Aikman says the game is over if the Eagles don't get a stop. The Eagles get a stop. Miller punts, Eagles get it at their 21.
Cutaway: Owens during the break, on the sideline telling McNabb to relax.
Eagles driving VERY slowly here. 4:30 and counting, they need two possessions and they haven't even crossed their own 35.
They're driving slowly but they are driving. Third and long completion to Terrell Owens and the Eagles are close to midfield with 3:30 left.
Eagles just standing around, blowing all kinds of time, actually having huddles and walking to the line of scrimmage like it's no big deal. 2:30 and counting, still haven't gotten to the New England 40. McNabb is calling the team into a huddle?!? What is he doing?
No, that’s fine, take your time. Perfect situation for a huddle and to snap it with 11 seconds on the play clock.
Short pass complete to Westbrook. Gets to the 30 as we hit the two minute warning. Still down 10 points.
They're not dead yet. McNabb throws into the end zone and Greg Lewis makes the grab. It's 24-21 with 1:48 on the clock.
Collinsworth: Eagles have already used a timeout. Have to onside kick here because they only have two left.
Onside kick bounces right to Patriots TE Christian Fauria.
Patriots run on first and second down, burning both Eagles timeouts. They also run on third down. Stuffed. They'll punt with less than 1:00 left, trying to pin the Eagles deep. They do. It's downed at the Eagles 4.
0:46 left on the clock, Eagles at their 4, no timeouts, needing a field goal.
First play, McNabb tries to throw it away but Westbrook catches it. Burns 15 seconds. Next play is incomplete.
0:17 left, 3rd and 9 from their own 5. We're at the point where a field goal isn't even an option. They need a touchdown.
Rodney Harrison picks off the third down pass. Game over. Well, not technically. 9 seconds left, but all Brady needs to do is take the snap and kneel.
Final score: New England 24, Philadelphia 21
Collinsworth mentions that the Browns fired Belichick. Leave it to a Cincinnati guy to twist the knife on Cleveland.
POSTGAME
James Brown: Boston Tea Party started a revolution. Boston Three Party started a dynasty. He must have been so proud of that line.
They play the Star Wars theme as the trophy ceremony begins, which is weird. Terry Bradshaw congratulates the Patriots and turns it over to Emperor Palpat...I mean Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
Tagliabue: Patriots join the elite teams in the history of the NFL. Nine consecutive playoff wins, tying the Packers. I'm giving you the Vince Lombardi Trophy and Vince Lombardi himself would be proud of you and your team.
Robert Kraft: New England fans are the best that any team could wish for. I'm proud we were able to win this stressing team and not individual accomplishment.
Bill Belichick won't respond to Terry Bradshaw's question about a dynasty. Artfully deflects and congratulates his players and coaches.
Bradshaw to Brady: You know this isn't this easy, right? Brady: I know that.
Deion Branch thanks God, the coaches, and his teammates. Bradshaw tells Branch he's won the MVP award, which obviously makes Branch a happy guy.

Ok, I'll bite, even though I have zero ideas. Chris and your OC of choice or reader on the return of football season. :-)
I love this one.. and how can I not choose Chris and Ellie my football nerds?? I’m casually ignoring the fact that Chris is in South Africa right now… we shall pretend he and Ellie are still in Georgia because that makes this easier…
Title: Football is Back
Pairing: Chris Evans x OFC (Ellie Spencer-Evans)
Rating: PG
Warning: n/a
Disclaimer: This work of fiction is not to be reposted, used or translated without my permission.
August 2017
“Chris, come on,” Ellie called from the TV room of their rented Georgia house. “The game is about to start.”
“I’m coming,” he replied as he walked into the room with Dodger and Daisy following him. He joined Ellie on the couch and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. “Football is back.”
Ellie grinned widely and nodded her head. “Finally!”
Chris laughed and turned his attention towards the TV. It didn’t matter that he and Ellie didn’t like either team playing (the Arizona Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys) or that it was just the preseason, all that mattered was that football was officially back.
In a month’s time, he and Ellie would be flying home to LA for their annual NFL kick off party, which had only grown in size with the addition of her friends and family that attended as well. This year, the party was actually starting on Thursday night for the Patriot’s game. Then Sunday would be their usual massive football game watching party.
“God I’ve missed football,” Chris sighed as he watched the backups for the Cardinals and Cowboys play. “And for it to start on the GOAT’s birthday…”
Ellie rolled her eyes, but didn’t say anything. Afterall, she understood having a favorite quarterback. Even if her love for her favorite quarterback paled considerably to Chris’s love for Tom Brady. She was certain, however, that Chris would choose her over TB anyday. Pretty certain anyway.
Not Working Today! Let’s Have Some Fun!

Hello
A/N: Rina prepares for the first meeting of Tom Brady as a member of the opposing team and her Patriots. Week 4 of the 2021 season. Fluff.
Rina wrung her hands nervously as she waited in the portico area of the Gillette Stadium complex. It was certainly not the first time she was waiting for her friend Tom after he had left the Patriots. They'd spent several days in the offseason as families, their children playing and laughing together in the Florida sunshine. She'd been there for him during the playoffs and Super Bowl LV as a guest. That had been different, as she was not on the sidelines like she could be with the Patriots. Bruce Arians was cordial to her but was not trusting enough to allow her near his coaching staff or players during games. It was only fair; she was viewed as a potential Patriots spy. There had been plenty of media speculation that this had been a Belichick ploy to send in a Trojan horse.
It was indeed a different atmosphere than last week when she had been waiting for Jules, who was honored during last week's game. She felt a wave of unsureness as she turned to her phone again. It was a text message from her husband Josh, checking in with the kids as they were about to depart their Boston apartment to head towards the stadium. Even as AJ and Thomas grew older, it was hard for them to still be at the stadium many hours ahead of game time. A smile broke her lips as she saw them dressed in their little Patriots jerseys and jeans, Josh rebelliously wearing a Detroit Lions t-shirt as well. "See you soon, my loves, careful of the traffic, babe," was what she typed in response. Down the hall, she could see Steve Belichick's way towards her.
"Rina, my dad wants to see you," the youngest Belichick relayed his father's message. Rina nodded, following the younger Belichick back down the hall towards the team locker room area. As a woman, she preferred not to go into men's locker rooms unless necessary. So she waited across the hallway and down a few paces while the younger Belichick went in, and a few seconds later, the elder Belichick came out.
"Are you ready for this?" Bill asked abruptly; Coach didn't waste time, especially on game days. He'd be relying on her eagle eyes if she spotted something on the field, just in case one of the other coaches and assistants missed the tiniest opening. He also knew how she felt about Tom, and working against one of your best friends was never easy, especially for someone who wore her emotions as Rina could.
"Yes. I know my job here, Coach." Rina responded with her chin held aloft, the infamous McMahon dimple and gumption showing.
"I know you do. I'm asking if you can handle the other side," His blue-grey eyes pinned her to the wall as she felt the anxiety well up again. Looking down for a moment, she looked back up with a half-smile.
"It's not going to be fun, and I'm as prepared for whatever feelings may come up as best as I can be." Coach Belichick nodded.
"You going to go see him?"
"Of course,"
"Then I'll see you after that," With that, Belichick went back into the locker room, and Rina jogged back down to wait. When she arrived, she saw that she had to wait no longer, as Tom Brady was chatting happily with Robert Kraft. As Mr. Kraft moved past Brady at last, she walked over with a smile.
"Lookie here what the cat dragged in; gosh, they'll just let anyone in this place these days," She quipped to catch Tom's attention. He looked over his shoulder, they made eye contact, and a piece in Rina's heart clicked back into place.
"Hey now," Tom said as he reached out for Rina and pulled her close. As she settled into his embrace, memories of many years in this same building ran through her head. They didn't need to talk; they spoke regularly on the phone and by text. The symbolism wasn't lost on others, who let them have their moment unhurried and unbothered. Perhaps they could've made their relationship work so many years ago in another life. Nearly twenty years had passed since the two had dated, and Rina still felt the faintest butterflies in her stomach when he looked at her. She settled into the embrace and knew it was all just hopes and dreams. Those weren't ones to come true, not in a million years. Sometimes they were nice to reminisce and re-visit, to feel that way again for a moment. Now, as she looked up at his bright smile and blue eyes, she was even more thankful for how things turned out.

Narrow Lot Modern Farmhouse
We often see TV shows transforming homes that are falling apart into dream homes, but that’s not so hard to do when you have a big team working against the time to show the beautiful results. Don’t get me wrong, I am a HUGE fan of some of these shows and some of them can certainly be trend setters, but today I want to showcase a builder and designer that could envision a new modern farmhouse on a really narrow lot in a real fixer-upper neighborhood. That’s the type of work I can really admire. Keep reading to know more:
“Hi everyone! My name is Amanda of @Nest_Builders_. I’m so excited to contribute to Home Bunch! My company Nest Builders Development & Design Co. builds and renovates homes in Richmond, Va.
With each home I build I try to incorporate current trends and timeless style while staying some what true to the style of other homes in the neighborhood. I call this project “The Urban Farmhouse.” This new construction home is located in the city along side Italianate homes. This home is only 15 ft. wide so keeping the floor plan open and the design as as light and bright as possible was very important. We kept the exterior style of the home similar to the other homes on this block but we added the board and batten siding, white exterior paint, and black windows to give it an updated and on trend look. We made the front porch low to the ground to also give the home some southern charm. The roof is a flat TPO roof similar to the other homes on this block.”
