Well in that case, we shall never keep matches in the house again and I’ll just have to start lighting my pipe with a magnifying glass and a sunbeam.

(oops they were in the forest during this part, not on the rocks... but they were probably also doing this on the rocks at some point... I’m not fixing it)

edit: i’m also not fixing the obvious typo, because i did a silly thing and merged all of my layers

I find “whiffling and twitching in his secret dreams” an unsettling descriptor. I think my brain parses “Gollum was strangling orcs and threatening hobbits and killin’ his cousin and chawin’ his way through every innocent young animal/human in Mirkwood!” as “yep, that’s what storybook monsters do, sounds like he’s good at being one”, but at “Gollum was making lil sleepy noises” my brain jumps to what it would be like to be Sam here, sitting there sleeplessly and watching this horrible serial killer your friend recruited and trying to decide if the snuffly sounds coming out of him are a sign of danger or just a sign that he’s dreaming about one of the times he killed someone else.

In a similar vein I also shudder a little every time the book goes ‘and they offered Gollum some non-horrifying food but he didn’t want to eat it’
