trapped on this gay ass train for 80 years

L is a former scientist turned revolutionary, who after attacking the project she used to work on and killing one of the lead engineers, was arrested and supposedly executed. She wasn't, instead she was kept alive for her knowledge, though her mind was broken to keep her compliant. Her wife, S, wasn't aware of this, and for many years thought she watched her love die. Until they were reunited on the maiden voyage of the train that L helped build. L didn't remember S, but trusted her enough to help her overtake the train.

Things went horribly, horribly wrong. The train was not what anyone thought it was. It instead contained a horror more dangerous then they could have imagined, and now it is set free. L regains her memories, and realizes what they have to do.

In order to prevent the collapse of their reality, they needed to slow the train down as long as possible. The only way to do this is to die very slowly and very painfully, and L offers herself up for the task. S stays with her the whole time, and they are finally in each others arms after so long apart. They spend 80 years by each other's sides in that engine room, and by the time the train finally arrives, they are nothing but a pair of warped skeletons, now forever embracing.

It’s Character A’s mission to kill Character B. Problem is, she hasn’t figured out how to accomplish that, and ends up pretending to be Character B’s friend to learn more about her. Character B has the power to control time. She’s been through all this before, and knows it ends in both her and Character A’s deaths. Except that Character A couldn’t bring herself to kill Character B after everything they’d been through, and a third party is the one that kills them both. So Character B turns back time. Knowing she’ll die one way or another, she’ll only allow herself to be killed by the girl she loves. So she wipes her memory, only leaving her love for Character A intact, and tries again (and again, and again…)

i’ve seen some people confused about the title of The Executioner and Her Way of Life aka Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road, and i kind of want to talk about it because it’s interesting and also, imo, reveals a bit about the series

so as you can see from the Wikipedia article, the original title of the series is 処刑少女の生きる道 (“Shokei Shoujo no Ikiru Michi”)... but then, if you look closer, you’ll see that the phrase 生きる道 (”ikiru michi”) also has the phrase バージンロード (”virgin road,” yes, literally the English words “virgin” and “road”) written above it. as you can see in the screenshot, when the title is written in Japanese characters, it’s written as 処刑少女の生きる道, but when written in Romaji, it’s written as “Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road”

if you look at the Japanese cover for the series, you’ll also noticed how 生きる道 is in the “main title,” but it also has the “subtitle” of バージンロード 

so what gives? it’s pretty simple: because of how the Japanese writing system works, it’s not always clear how Japanese characters are meant to be pronounced-- typically any kanji has at least two different ways to be read, if not more. so, sometimes little “subtitles” called furigana are provided next to or above kanji to show the intended reading. these are usually used on more obscure kanji, or in written works intended for children who haven’t yet learned more complex characters-- but sometimes writers also like using furigana to convey a double meaning or wordplay

so, basically “virgin road” is an alternate reading of “ikiru michi.” and if we pop  “ikiru michi” into ye olde Google Translate

we’ll see that “way of life” is a pretty straightforward translation. (note: under normal circumstances, don’t trust a machine translation as your sole source lmao. i’m only doing this because i know from other sources that this is the correct translation and this is a quick easy way to convey what i mean) so, technically “The Executioner and Her Way of Life” is actually pretty much a literal translation of “Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road”... it just lacks the ability to convey that double meaning of the original title due to how English works, and the translators basically had to make a tough call as to which nuance to convey

...but of course, the big question remains: what the hell is a “virgin road?”

so, the title can be read as “The Executioner and Her Way of Life”... or, something along the lines of “The Executioner’s Walk Down The Wedding Aisle”
