This is inspired by Ryoko Kui's Secret Santa. I thought it would be fun if penguindrum characters exchanged gifts. It goes like this:
Kanba (a cute bandage set) -> Momoka
Shouma (a sewing kit) -> Sahei Natsume
Himari (mittens) -> Kanba
Ringo (christmas mix curry) -> Chiemi Takakura
Hibari (a DoubleH CD) -> Kenzan Takakura
Momoka (a journal/planner) -> Dr. Washizuka
Sanetoshi (a book, Super Frog Saves Tokyo) -> Tabuki
Masako (expensive tea) -> Himari
Mario (the spiciest chip in the world) -> Sanetoshi
Hikari (an official DobleH t-shirt) -> Yamashita
Tabuki (binoculars) -> Hibari
Yuri (her signature perfume) -> Asami
Kenzan (a lockpick kit) -> Hikari
Chiemi (ribbons) -> Yuri
Sahei (liquor) -> Shirase&Souya
Asami (lip balm) -> Shouma
Yamashita (BL manga) -> Mario
Shirase&Souya (a transport card) -> Masako
Tsubasa (theater tickets) -> Ringo
Dr. Washizuka (face masks) -> Tsubasa

Ugly Things Cannot Be Loved: Penguindrum and the dilemma of Yuri
Content Warning: depictions of homophobia (condemned by the text); child sexual abuse; terrorism; poverty; cults.
Spoilers: Detailed discussion of all of Penguindrum.
Penguindrum is a challenging show, in all senses of the word. In it, Takakura Shoma, Kanba, and Himari, whose parents committed a terrorist attack out of economic desperation, confront others whose lives have been touched by systematic oppression over something called the Penguindrum, which they believe can magically transform their lives. Through these stories of survivors of abuse, child homelessness, and a terroristic cult fighting for the Penguindrum, Penguindrum indicts how society abandons the most vulnerable. In spite of this, Penguindrum is hopeful about our ability to heal from trauma together; most of its characters end the story having grown in some way, letting go of unhealthy attachments–Masako lets go of her attachment to capitalism, Shoma lets go of the guilt he feels about his parents’ actions. Most powerfully, Himari, the adoptive daughter of those same parents, fully accepts her past of homelessness and illness and embraces her adoptive family. At the climax of the show, Himari pulls her brother Kanba from the brink of replicating their parents’ act of terrorism, breaking the cycle of trauma.
This is not the case with Yuri, a Takarazuka star who suffered violent abuse at the hands of her father until she was rescued by her first love Momoka and the Penguindrum. In one of the most disturbing scenes of the show, Yuri, a closeted lesbian, graphically drugs and rapes Ringo, Momoka’s little sister, and then shows little-to-no remorse over the act. Ringo, on the other hand, seems to barely register the event, with her story moving on as if it had never happened. In the penultimate episode, the two meet, but only for Yuri to give Ringo her sister’s diary, without any acknowledgement of the horrific violence she inflicted. If it is a sign of remorse, it is wildly inadequate. Her act of violence against Ringo is left unresolved.
Yuri’s assault of Ringo is emblematic of how the tensions and arguable flaws in Penguindrum point to larger tensions and unresolved questions in our movements for transformative justice, abolition, and queer liberation. The struggle, if not impossibility, of finding true healing in the aftermath of trauma when the injustice that produced it has not ended is the tension that animates the show, and, I think, the work of organizing for justice.

Ringo & Yuri
CW: Discussions of lesbophobia, sexual grooming, and sexual assault
So often times when it comes to Penguindrum analysis, people really like to sidestep or ignore having to discuss Yuri, especially her relationship with Ringo. In any show it would be uncomfortable to have to watch the sexual grooming taking place, but considering Yuri is Penguindrum’s only major queer character, it also reads as playing into the predatory lesbian stereotype in a really mean-spirited way
Strangely enough, after Yuri attempts to assault Ringo, this subplot never comes up again. Apart from Ringo being uncomfortable during a phone call with Yuri, these two interact several times as if it never happened, and Yuri never tries to groom Ringo again, because of all this it can be easy to see this subplot as totally unnecessary and unconnected from the rest of the narrative
While I agree with a lot of the critique of the subplot around its shock value nature and how it is unfortunately impacts the depiction of queerness in the show, I think Yuri is depicted with too much sympathy for me to write it off as simple an unmotivated choice. Her backstory contains some of the most heartbreaking moments of the series, and her relationship with Momoka and Tabuki are important to the overall themes. Whether executed well or not, I can’t help believe the intentions of her relationship with Ringo were just as heavily considered.
And so as I mulled on this, it hit me that I think their Yuri’s grooming is supposed to demonstrate the worst case scenario of Ringo’s plans to become Momoka.
For the first half of the show, we see Ringo pursuing Tabuki, this grown man clearly inappropriate for her out of her delusions that she needs to replace the hole Momoka left behind in her loved ones lives. And as uncomfortable as this subplot is as well, it is played with this dark comedic tone, to the point that when it comes to consent issues, Ringo is much more a danger to Tabuki than he is to her, because for all his flaws we learn, he is very dedicated to keeping their relationship age appropriate
Yuri puts Ringo’s pursuit in a darker context, bc just like Tabuki, she was someone in love with Momoka and who struggles to cope with her loss, only Yuri has no qualms about seeing Ringo in this vulnerable state and taking advantage of it for ill means
This revelation is a little awkwardly placed as Ringo by now has given up on replacing her older sister, but it does fit the themes this transitional middle part of the show puts forth, where all the adult figures are revealed to be dangerous, exploitative, and predatory in their own ways.
This reading doesn’t erase its underdeveloped nature or all the other problems I highlighted above, but for me at least it makes me more able to engage with the event on a Watsonian level rather than feel too drawn and distracted by the hand of the author and his weird choices.
