First, today is our Pastor's Appreciation Month Celebration at RTU New church. Meet our super loving spiritual father, Pastor Joselito Corteza. 💕

After we have taken these photos, we have our super encouragering mentor from our Pastor about life and relationships. 😊 Super inspiring ng mga shinare ni Pastor, he even taught us how to be wise when it comes to courting and how to handle relationships. Sobrang nablessed lang ako na may father na mag-aadvise sayo about sa buhay, work (how to be promoted), courtship (paano kumilala sa tao bago magtiwala at sagutin) and even marriage (kung ano ba ang pag-aasawa). Isang big privilage na makakwentuhan at makausap si Pastor about sa mga bagay na toh. It just feels like.. declaration. YES! Nakakaamoy ako ng promotion and blessings sa relationship namin ng partner bestfriend ko. More mentoring please, Pastor! ❤

At first, akala ko mahirap sila iapproach like other people, based on my experience. Pero nakakatuwa na pareho kayo ng personality, approachable, friendly and kwela! 😆 Nakakatuwa yung testimony ni Lea (the one wearing red half-sleeve) kung paano niya nafeel na tinatawag siya ni Lord. Kung paano sya nagkaroon ng holy fear sa Lord. Which makes me more inspired na magpakalalim pa sa Lord. Na nagtulak saken para iglorify at ipraise pa si Lord. Kaya sobrang nakakablessed yung buhay ng mga taong toh. Everything happens for a reason talaga! And so blessed na may mga ganitong testimony sa group namin. 😌

Instagram Story and Self-Esteem

 Pagi ini gue kembali membuka desiringgod.com. Di home website itu setiap harinya akan ada semacam article of the day yang judulnya terpampang jelas. Ketika gue membuka website itu pagi ini, judul article of the day-nya adalah “Find Your Self-Esteem in Someone Else : Who Defines Your Worth?” Yang ditulis oleh Jon Bloom. Begitu membacanya, gue langsung merasa bahwa Tuhan sedang menolong gue untuk menemukan jawaban atas pergumulan gue belakangan.

Belakangan gue sangat bergumul dengan instagram story. Agak aneh memang, tapi gue merasa tidak nyaman dengan fitur ini. IG story sebenarnya adalah duplicate dari Snapchat, makanya beberapa orang menyebut IG story sebagai Snapgram. Dulu ketika Snapchat booming banget dengan segala filter-filter-annya, gue sangat menahan diri untuk tidak install dan buat account. Makanya begitu tahu ada fitur IG Story yang basically sama aja sama Snapchat, gue tidak meng-upgrade IG gue. Tapi beberapa bulan lalu, gue dikasih notifikasi kalau gue harus meng-upgrade aplikasi Instagram gue. Setelah gue upgrade, munculah bulatan-bulatan di atas home page IG gue. “Oh ini toh yang namanya IG Story,” pikir gue. Gue sempat melihat-lihat isi story dari beberapa orang yang gue follow di IG. Gue juga sempat membuat beberapa post. Bahkan pernah satu hari, dalam jarak waktu yang tidak beberapa lama, gue membuat sekitar 5 story di IG Story. Tiba-tiba gue tersentak sendiri. Hari itu, gue memutuskan untuk stop using this app.

Why?

Gue gak ada masalah dengan IG Story atau Snapchat atau app sejenisnya. Masalahnya tidak berada di app tersebut, tapi ada di kelemahan gue (and probably more than half population of human race) called : self-esteem atau dalam bahasa Indonesia ‘harga diri’.

But before going far, this opinion is probably only applies on myself. I’m sorry if anyone offended by my opinion.

Apa itu self-esteem? Gue mencoba untuk men-googling (lebih jujurnya meng-bing sih), dan menemukan beberapa definition :

Wikipedia : In sociology and psychology, self-esteem reflects a person's overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself, (for example, "I am competent", "I am worthy"), as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame. [1]

Verywell : In psychology, the term self-esteem is used to describe a person's overall sense of self-worth or personal value. [2]

Merriam-Webster : a confidence and satisfaction in oneself. [3]

Menurut pendapat gue, IG Story or Snapchat is destructing our self-esteem.

Self-esteem adalah penilaian seseorang mengenai harga atau worth-nya sendiri. Kebanyakan orang (termasuk gue dulu) cenderung menempatkan dan mencari self-esteem-nya dari pandangan orang lain. Dan lucky (?) us, di jaman internet seperti sekarang, ada satu media yang paling mudah dan ‘efektif’ untuk dijadikan sebagai alat untuk ‘menghitung’ worth kita : social media.

IG Story memungkinkan kita untuk ‘meliput’ kehidupan kita real-time. Follower kita akan tahu apa yang sedang kita kerjakan, apa yang sedang kita makan, apa yang kita rasakan, etc di waktu yang hampir bersamaan ketika kita melakukannya. Yang membuat IG Story dan Snapchat lebih berbahaya (menurut gue) dari pada Path, IG, Facebook, dan media sosial lainnya adalah karena IG Story dan Snapchat memungkinkan kita untuk membuat video (visual dan audio) mengenai kehidupan kita real-time. Visual-audio dan real-time. This is a great chance for us to show our life to others. Untuk menunjukan betapa flashy dan awesome-nya kehidupan kita. Betapa enak dan artsy-nya makanan yang kita makan. Betapa menyenangkannya aktivitas kita. Betapa sibuknya kita sampai harus lembur di kantor sampai jam 3 pagi. Betapa kerennya pekerjaan yang kita lakukan. Oh look at my working table, so clean and neat! Oh look at my office with great ambiance and comfortable! Oh look at what I have for my breakfast : granola and walnut, so healthy yet expensive. Karena Path and other soc-med tidak lagi dimanfaatkan secara real-time, orang lain akan merasa kita berlebihan ketika kita post every single activity we do. Tapi tidak dengan IG Story dan Snapchat. Karena real-time-nya, orang akan terbiasa dengan post yang banyak dan detail itu. IG Story and Snapchat is a highway to show our daily awesome-ness.

Gue tidak akan menyangkali hal ini, but I am really tempted to gain this kind of public acknowledges. Sebagai seseorang yang ‘menyembah diri sendiri’, gue sangat haus dan lapar dengan pujian. Gue selalu ingin orang melihat aktivitas-aktivitas gue yang gaul dan keren, and being envy for that.

Lebih jauh lagi, dunia real-time dalam sosial media yang kita pikir sebagai tempat kita “menemukan” worth kita juga kan merembet ke hal lain: insecurities. Gue percaya masalah insecurities ini juga sebenarnya berakar dari delusi menjadikan dunia social media sebagai a place to find our worth (self-esteem). Sebuah artikel berjudul “The Secret to Digital Health” yang ditulis oleh Tony Reinke memuat kisah seorang gadis yang menurut gue sangat akurat untuk menunjukan how insecurities creep in to us through social media : [4]

Ruby Karp, one brave and honest 15-year-old, stepped out to expose how she thinks her Snapchat app feeds her own teenage insecurities. “I always feel like I need to know what everyone is doing, secretly hoping it isn’t better than what I’m doing,” she writes. “Instead of enjoying what we are doing, all we do is take pictures of what we are doing to make other teens feel bad they aren’t with us.” Lured by the fear of missing out (FOMO), we feed the FOMO beast in others.

“Snapchat is all fun and games until you aren’t featured in the big group photo everyone took while you were in the other room getting chips, or worse, when you weren’t even invited,” she admits. “The app amplifies our fear of missing out, and turns us into whiny braggers. Yep, teenagers are almost all as insecure as you thought they were, and Snapchat isn’t helping.”

Lebih jauh dari sekedar menentukan worth kita, IG Story dan Snapchat juga menentukan bagaimana kita melihat orang lain, sambil (mungkin) secretly hoping that they’re less worthy than ourselves.

This is so scary, and we face this kind of reality.

Bukan hal yang salah sebenarnya mencari dan menemukan worth kita. Self-esteem adalah hal yang penting (menurut beberapa penelitian psikologis yang gue baca random) karena self-esteem akan mendorong kita dalam menjalani hidup kita. Orang-orang yang gak punya self-esteem dan merasa worthless adalah kandidat-kandidat kuat orang yang bunuh diri. Bahkan seorang sarjana bernama Abraham Maslow menempatkan self-esteem atau harga diri sebagai peringkat kedua dari piramida kebutuhannya. [5]

Jadi sebenarnya tidak ada yang salah dengan self-esteem,

Asalkan kita mencarinya di tempat yang benar.

 The real problem is : dunia saat ini kehilangan tempat mencari self-esteem yang benar.

Mengutip Jon Bloom : [6]

Around the turn of the twentieth century, theories of “self-esteem” emerged in the realms of psychology, and by the 1960s self-esteem was accepted by Western popular culture as one of the primary roots of mental health. But because it didn’t address the fundamental problem — detachment from God — after more than fifty years of trying to apply self-esteem as a remedy for our identity-ailments, we find ourselves only more isolated as individuals and our relationships, communities, and societies only more fractured. And that’s because we’re looking for our self-worth in the wrong places, and for the wrong reasons.

Gue tidak bisa menyalahkan dunia, dunia yang jatuh ke dalam dosa, dunia yang begitu terobsesi dengan self-esteem; dan gue juga tidak bisa menyalahkan Adam dan Hawa yang tergoda ingin menjadi seperti Allah karena merasa bahwa they can be as worthy as God (which absolutely can’t, at any cost).

Masalah kita yang saat ini berjuang menemukan worth dari pengakuan dan penghargaan orang lain di post demi post atau story demi story yang kita tampilkan di laman social media, berakar dari keterpisahan kita dengan Allah. Kita merasa tidak ada yang bisa dan/atau mau mengapresiasi, menghargai, mengasihi, dan mengakui kita kalau kita tidak tampil great di hadapan orang lain. Padahal jelas tidak.

“Oleh karena engkau berharga di mata-Ku dan mulia, dan Aku ini mengasihi engkau, maka Aku memberikan manusia sebagai gantimu, dan bangsa-bangsa sebagai ganti nyawamu.” (Yesaya 43 : 4)

“Bukankah burung pipit dijual lima ekor dua duit? Sungguhpun demikian tidak seekorpun dari padanya yang dilupakan Allah, bahkan rambut kepalamupun terhitung semuanya. Karena itu jangan takut, karena kamu lebih berharga dari pada banyak burung pipit.” (Lukas 12:6-7)

“Dapatkah seorang perempuan melupakan bayinya, sehingga ia tidak menyayangi anak dari kandungannya? Sekalipun dia melupakannya, Aku tidak akan melupakan engkau.” (Yesaya 49:14)

Firman Tuhan di atas jelas menunjukkan betapa berharganya kita di hadapan-Nya. Kita adalah gambar dan rupa Allah, Sang Pencipta Semesta (Imago Dei). Dan bahkan kejatuhan manusia ke dalam dosa tidak menghilangkan kasih-Nya untuk kita. Kita tetap berharga di mata-Nya, begitu berharga hingga Allah sendiri turun berinkarnasi menjadi manusia dan bahkan mati lalu bangkit untuk menebus dosa-dosa kita.

Akan tetapi Allah menunjukkan kasih-Nya kepada kita, oleh karena Kristus telah mati untuk kita, ketika kita masih berdosa. (Roma 5:8)

Karena begitu besar kasih Allah akan dunia ini, sehingga Ia telah mengaruniakan Anak-Nya yang tunggal, supaya setiap orang yang percaya kepada-Nya tidak binasa, melainkan beroleh hidup yang kekal. (Yohanes 3:16)

Bahkan ketika ayat-ayat di atas terasa seperti hapalan luar kepala, tapi kasihNya sudah dibuktikan di atas kayu salib. DarahNya yang tercurah sudah membuktikan how great our worth in His eyes.

Harga diri kita tidak ditentukan oleh berapa banyak likes atau comment yang kita dapat di post atau story kita, atau ketika orang-orang talk about our cool post. Harga diri kita seharga darah Allah yang rela turun menjadi manusia dan mati bagi kita.

“Sebab kamu tahu, bahwa kamu telah ditebus dari cara hidupmu yang sia-sia yang kamu warisi dari nenek moyangmu itu bukan dengan barang yang fana, bukan pula dengan perak atau emas, melainkan dengan darah yang mahal, yaitu darah Kristus yang sama seperti darah anak domba yang tak bernoda dan tak bercacat.” (1 Petrus 1:18-19)

Ini adalah isi hati gue yang paling dalam untuk ribuan bahkan jutaan orang di luar sana yang kebingungan mencari dan meningkatkan self-esteem-nya di tempat yang salah dan dengan metode yang salah. Betapa-pun flashy-nya post atau story kita, that will only lead us into insecurities and emptiness.

Dalam artikelnya Jon Bloom juga mengangkat soal self-esteem vs humility.

Berdasarkan kasih karunia yang dianugerahkan kepadaku, aku berkata kepada setiap orang di antara kamu: Janganlah kamu memikirkan hal-hal yang lebih tinggi dari pada yang patut kamu pikirkan, tetapi hendaklah kamu berpikir begitu rupa, sehingga kamu menguasai diri menurut ukuran iman, yang dikaruniakan Allah kepada kamu masing-masing. (Roma 12:3)

Setelah ayat ini, Rasul Paulus menulis tentang kesatuan tubuh Kristus. Setiap kita merupakan bagian dalam satu tubuh dengan Kristus sebagai kepalanya. Setiap bagian punya peranan yang berbeda, sesuai kapasitasnya masing-masing. Pun demikian, setiap bagian pasti mempunyai peran yang vital dan tidak tergantikan. Begitu juga ketika kita melihat orang lain. Membanding-bandingkan harga diri kita dengan orang lain justru akan berujung pada tinggi hati dan perasaan insecure.

Jon Bloom menjelaskan bagian ini dengan sangat indah : [7]

Pride is the knife that dissects the body of Christ into isolated parts to determine the value of each. The pride of conceit makes us consider our role or function more important than others. The pride of envy makes us covet the function of a part we consider better than our own (1 Corinthians 12:23–24).

But humility helps us see our function in relation to God and others. It unites the body because we don’t “think of [ourselves] more highly than [we] ought to think” (Romans 12:3). In fact, because we more clearly see how others benefit the body than we see how we benefit the body, humility causes us to think of others more significant than ourselves (Philippians 2:3).

Hanya Allah yang mampu menciptakan desain yang begitu mulia, dimana setiap kita, apapun fungsi kita dalam kesatuan tubuh. Kita dapat mengalami kerendahan hati yang dalam dan indah ketika kita menerima panggilan kita sebagai anugrah yang tidak layak kita dapatkan. Dan di saat yang bersamaan semakin menikmati diri kita sendiri sebagai pribadi yang berarti dan bermartabat, serta terus mengembangkan diri kita. [8]

To make it short, self-esteem kita bukan ditentukan dari seberapa cool and flashy our life is yang kita tunjukan di hadapan orang lewat media sosial kita. Self-esteem kita sudah ditentukan lewat kasih Kristus bagi kita, yaitu betapa berharganya kita di mata-Nya. Selain itu, harusnya kita melihat diri kita sebagai bagian dari tubuh Kristus yang saling melengkapi satu sama lain. Kita tidak perlu membandingkan diri kita dengan orang lain dan merasa insecure, tapi dengan rendah hati menyadari bahwa setiap manusia berharga di mata Allah dan memiliki peranannya masing-masing.

Gue tidak sedang memaksa seluruh dunia untuk berhenti menggunakan IG Story atau Snapchat, gue hanya berharap ketika kita memakai aplikasi-aplikasi itu, we are not searching our worth there. You will not find it there, you’ll find it at the cross.

In Christ’s blood, my everlasting acceptance is secure.

In Christ’s resurrection, I have no FOMO — everything I miss in this life will be fully compensated for in eternity.

In Christ’s self-sacrifice, I am now freed from the bondage of besting everyone else.

In Christ’s love, I can now give myself away in loving others.
