What is the best treatment for fingernail infections?
Treating fingernail or toenail infections can be a long and expensive process. Without antifungal medication, fungal nail infections frequently persist and can be challenging to treat.
There are several options ranging from oral antifungal medications, topical ointments, and alternative therapies. Over-the-counter creams and ointments are also available, but they have not proved very effective.
Oral antifungals
The best treatment for a fungal nail infection is usually prescription antifungal pills taken by mouth (oral antifungals).
Oral antifungals can attack fungus in your entire body. Typically, this is the most effective method for curing a nail infection.
Your doctor may prescribe an oral antifungal medication, such as:
terbinafine (Lamisil)
itraconazole (Sporanox)
fluconazole (Diflucan)
griseofulvin (Gris-PEG)
What are some side effects of oral antifungal tablets used for fingernail infections?
Side effects of some oral antifungal medications include:
headaches
itching
loss of taste
feeling sick and diarrhoea
If you are pregnant or have certain medical conditions, you cannot take antifungal medications. Your liver may be harmed by them.
Recommended: Support your nails and general health and enhance your mood at the same time with KeravitaPro.
Topical antifungals
Topical solutions may be effective, in most instances, in curing toenail fungal infections, but the treatment isn’t guaranteed to completely rid your body of the fungal infection.
Topical antifungals are rubbed or brushed onto your nails in the same way that you’d apply nail polish. They may work for a mild infection, but they can’t get deep enough into the nail to cure a more serious infection.
It is more advisable to use a topical treatment in combination with an oral antifungal agent. The effectiveness of the treatment may be increased by combining oral medications with topical antifungal medicines.
Depending on the type of fungus causing the infection, as well as the extent of the infection, you may have to use these medications for several months, sometimes up to six months, before fully replacing the infected nail with an uninfected nail.
