Homophobic dudebros are always commenting shit like 'stop saying characters are gay this isn't canon 馃槨' at queer posts as if we don't know that ?? Like bro whether it's canon or not isn't gonna deter people from seeing queer coding & chemistry. And honestly ?? based on this judgment I can see why some dudebros are so bitter - they are constantly restricting themselves with canon & the supposed canon probability and are therefore constantly limiting their own personal enjoyment of media to what is explicitly canon and/or what is 'supposed' to be canon - I would be frustrated too if I didn't allow myself to use my imagination or take liberties with how I enjoy media
#like ?? do y'all remember that one Reddit post where this str8 guy said he was mad at mha not focusing on Izu0cha more -#because the 'destined' canon pairing was so bland & underdeveloped so he was mad that he couldn't enjoy the pairing#and it's like ?? yeah buddy that's why we ship other things and explore ideas outside of the explicitly canon#not to say that I don't think queer things can become canon - I think bkdk has a 50% chance#but it would definitely subvert what people thought was 'supposed' to happen#bakudeku#dechan#bkdk#izuku midoriya#katsuki bakugo#my hero academia#todobaku#kiribaku#togachaco#original post

Twitter drama, fandom history: what happened with mha362 and the reddit situation - part 1
I decided to annotate a bit of fandom history. In particular, the whole twitter drama that happened these past weeks, mainly the past week, around mha362: Vocal Pineapple, the reddit post, the fights etc.. I will have some screenshots, but the rest is from memory, while it is still fresh.
On twitter I follow mainly Todobaku, Bakudeku and Izuocha accounts, plus some general BNHA accounts. So my information come from them, and I might have missed other shippers accounts or events, so please, keep that in mind.
I just want to specify that many people who are Bakugou haters/dislike Bakugou were absolutely normal people, NICE people, just the usual anime fans. Rejoying or not, they never went into people's profiles to pick at fans or started to throw bait tweets around.
Regarding what happened, it mainly started with this:
A lot of people, I am sure, were talking about ships and characters and the chapter itself, but Vocal Pineapple (anime youtuber) was probably the biggest twitter user to do so. VP also, previouly, specifically wrote tweet for Bakudeku fans (telling them that he understands the ship) to get more followers, as there are a lot of Bakudekus so... having them as followers is quite beneficial.
It is just a tweet, but because of how popular VP is, it kinda let to many other twitter users less kind than VP to start insulting shippers.
EDIT: I wanted to add that VP was already tweeting with Bkdk shippers before the chapter was dropped, so the reason for this tweet was probably in reply to the fact that he had misinterpreted a post being about Izuocha. The tweet in question was a pro-Kiribaku one about Deku being a stalker (? my memory is foggy). A bkdk fan talked about how at least bkdk had canon moment, and people thought they were attacking Izuocha. VP tweeted/retweeted about it and was in a "tweet discourse" with bkdk fans. So some kind of ship exchange. This might be why he decided to phrase this leaks tweet this way, because he was fighting with bkdk fans.
Again, my memory of the kiribaku tweet is foggy, so take it with a grain of salt. Also I only saw people talking about it after.
The chapter was extra dramatic, throwing everyone in shamble. A free for all. And MHA was trending like nothing before:
The rest was an immediate mess, where people were retweeting him, replying to him, etc. Any reply that would disagree with him would immediately end up with being dogpiled by his followers.
VP was not the only one. A lot of people were posting pictures of "Bakugou's last moments" in reply to Bkdk's users or Bakugou's fans tweets. Plus random people made videos:
People posting Bakugou related ships on unmoderated subreddits (this is from Kamijirou) would receive tons of anti-comments: (this was for a Kiribaku ship in a trio of Izuocha, Kiribaku, Kamijirou, posted on the Kamijirou subreddit)
Random homophobia, random no-spoilers.
DEATH THREATS AND SIMILAR
Then this happened:
Two users (both under 16 or 17 years old) made these retweets of Vocal Pineapple, basically asking for his death. I do not know if anyone reprimanded them (hopefully they did), because these are absolutely wrong and distasteful, and basically equating to death threats/wishes on him.
So death threats were sent to VP (maybe as messages too, I am not sure!). I tried to ask for all of the accounts, as I believe in making sure my part of the fandom acts correctly, but the only ones I have received (not by VP but another user) were those two, who are both minors.
(By the way, VP user name will change a lot, mainly because he kept changing it every couple of hours to taunt Bakugou's death or Bkdks, but if you see a pineapple that is him).
Given that he received these threats, Pineapple thought it would be great to retweet this:
Where he rejoyced about the chance of people being suicidal.
People came in to defend this retweet. Their main argumentations were more suicide jokes, trolling or this attempt at "being considerate": That tweet is okay, but actually tweeting stuff like "If Bakugou dies I die/I will commit suicide" is wrong because it minimizes issues and makes a mockery of suicide.
This user thought he knew that every person joking has absolutely no actual diagnosis, they are just "mocking suicide".
These were the "so many posts"
And this was their reasoning for defending why it was okay to retweet or tweet about "Cheering for suicide of other people".
Except that when I showed them the opposite, the people asking for death if other characters would die, I only received silence.
In general, people (bkdks and Bakugous fans) were posting very dramatic reactions (as expected from the death of a character so popular) which were being hijacked or screenshotted by antis, for the purpose of mocking. Some anties even just left pictures of dead Bakugou under bkdk fans, for the hell of it.
Here's an example:
And random people commenting on tweets specifically for and by bakudeku fans:
Some people added random comments, trying to gaslight bkdk fans about Bakugou having the card, without even looking at the panels:
2. MISGENDERING
The other big mess was the recording. Someone had recorded one of those twitter spaces vocal/audio chats. Another user (JayKnY) decided to share one of these recordings which had users finding out about mha362 and crying (I did not want to listen to it, but from the mocking, this was what was happening):
Sadly, not all those people were adults. V. Pineapple retweeted the recording and the mockery, but deleted the retweets after finding out that there had been some minors in the audio.
A lot of people retweeted the video, and many misgendered one of the recorded people. It was really a shitshow of transphobia. With zero empathy:
Here is an Izuocha user concerned because of the misgendering and the way people were mocking the audio:
Another user, was also misgendered directly by Vocal Pineapple, which later wrote about it, here:
Except that they did never apologize neither took down the misgender-retweet. The misgendering did feel like a mistake (VP called the user "sis", I believe as an accident as VP has never been transphobic or homophobic before, and had even left messages for his fans to not use his words or tweets as excused to be homophobic and transphobic, as seen here:
)
but sadly it brought a lot of transphobia and hate to the insulted user. Still VP deleted the tweet after (?) some time, but here I am not sure when.
Other people noticed the fandom state, as seen here in this reddit comment:
Here is some more vitriol:
Now.. the reddit situation, PART 2 HERE

Popular ships in MHA, comparing different websites
A comparison of ships popularities among different websites. In order: AO3 (fanfics), pixiv (fanworks), tiktok (visualizations), tumblr (subscriptions to tag), deviantart (fanarts), fanfiction dot net (fanfics), google trends (search n), subreddits (total subscribers, active subscribers at different times), twitter (followers of daily-ship accounts). Let me know if you want me to add anything in particular.
AO3 numbers:
Bakudeku is the most popular BNHA ship here, and also the most popular anime ship in all of AO3 (it is the n10 in all the top100 most popular ao3 ships). In second place we have Kiribaku and then Tododeku. Erasermic is fourth, and then we have a big jump for the rest of the ships.
Izuocha is the top fm ship.
PIXIV numbers:
On pixiv I searched the Japanese names of the ships, and for the MM ships I searched and both types (ex. bakudeku and dekubaku).
In first place we have Bakudeku, second place Tododeku and third place Dekubaku. In this case Kiribaku is fourth instead of the usual second place. Differently from AO3, the most popular FM ship is Todomomo and not Izuocha.
If we sum the two versions of each MM ship (ex. Bakudeku + Dekubaku) we have:
We have a very big gap between Bakudeku/Dekubaku and second place (Tododeku), then we have very similar numbers for the third (Kiribaku) and the fourth place (Todobaku).
In general, in both graphs the FM ships have very similar numbers, a part from Kirimina that has a very low number of fanworks.
TIKTOK numbers:
These are the top 10 ships (million of views) on tiktok. Again we have Bakudeku in first place, in this case the difference between first and second place is almost double, similar to pixiv, but here we have kiribaku in second place. Tododeku is third place and then we have a big jump before the other ships. For more ships (22 ships compared) click here. Izuocha is the most popular fm ship.
TUMBLR subscriptions:
Here I checked how many people subscribed to each tag. Again we have bakudeku in first place, and three main big ship, this time Tododeku is second and Kiribaku is third. Kacchako is the most popular fm ship.
More on tumblr here
DEVIANTART fanarts:
This platform is different from all the others. Here the numbers are extremely similar, almost identical. For the first time we have another ship in the top 1, and here the most popular ship is Kiribaku, then Tododeku second and Bakudeku third. In fourth place we have Kacchako.
FANFICTION DOT NET fanfics:
For this I selected "Pairing" and added the two characters. In first place we have Bakudeku again, followed this time by Izuocha and then Tododeku.
GOOGLE TRENDS:
Bakudeku was the most searched ship, following kiribaku and tododeku who had a similar trend but now Kiribaku is in second place.
This is the same trends but for the Japanese names of the ships:
Mind that the colors are different here! In blue we have Bakudeku, which has a very similar pattern to Todobaku (in green). Todobaku, even if by little, is here the most searched ship term, following there is Bakudeku. In red we have Tododeku which is pretty similar to the two but seems to loose numbers in 2018/2019. Kiribaku seems to be the least search term. Izuocha has a very high search at the beginning... which is probably due to the term being used for other things in Japanese, and not specifically because of the ship, given that the rise comes from before the manga was even out.
SUBREDDITS subscribers:
Reddit allows people to open different subreddits. These numbers are the number of users subscribed to each subreddit. All the subreddit are free to join, a part from Bakudeku which is closed to new users, and all new users have to request access, which makes it a bit different than the others.
In general I think the reason why reddit is so different from other fandom spaces is how male skewed it is, and the fact that it has mainly young fans new to fandoms.
TWITTER: daily... insert ship here
For twitter I would have loved to be able to check how many uses a tag has. If you know how, please, let me know! For now, I checked the most popular ship accounts and how many subscribers they have. I added an asterisks if the account is not active anymore. These ships account are usually called "dailybkdk" or "dailyizuocha" etc. For some reasons the subscribers on dailyizuocha were rounded up to 13.4k instead of the full number, but this did not change its position in the list.
In first place we have dailybkdk with 40k users following. In second place we have a tdbkdk centered twitter account called mhatrinity, I put it in grey in the image because it is not necessarily ship specific, so you can exclude it from the analysis. In third palce we have dailykrbk with 25k followers. In fourth place we have dailyizuocha (third place if you exclude the tdbkdk twitter account) with 13k followers.

Do people dislike Uraraka just because of ships? (Part 3/3)
I often see people saying "you only hate Uraraka because of ships!", not to me as I generally enjoy her, but to shippers. The thing is... non-Izuocha and non-Kacchako fans, non-bkdk, non-shippers in general do not have a good or high opinion on Uraraka. If you want to know how and why I would say such a thing, well...
I decided to check.
This is part 3 of that post.
part 1 (reddit comments and merchandise),聽part 2 (popularity polls), Part 3 (AO3), Conclusions
Of course Ochako would be extremely popular among her own ships, so what happens when we exclude Ochako-ships? How often is she added in gen (non-shippy) fics? How often is she added in non-rival ships?
A) First a quick check of all fics, excluding no ship: BNHA has 249049 fanfics. Ochako was tagged in 46679. That is 18.74%
For comparison, Deku is tagged in 51.52% of fics, Bakugou is tagged in 47.84% of fics, Todoroki is tagged in 28.27% of fics, Aizawa is tagged in 26.11% of fics. Because these are probably due to ships, let's check more.
We can see that there is a massive difference.
B) Gen ships: only fanfics that have friendship. I checked the top10 characters added and the top10 relationships. Then I checked the percentage of Ochako being tagged in all BNHA gen fics on AO3.
Gen fanfics tagged with Ochako (no ship excluded): 9316 over 50934
Above her we have Izuku (30499), Bakugou (20337), Aizawa (19119), Todoroki (13494), All Might (10362) and Class 1-A (10362).
Of course Deku is the MC in BNHA and he is extremely popular, so it is better to compare Ochako with other secondary characters instead of the MC. We see that her percentage of presence is comparable to the "Class 1-A" and All Might.
Interestingly the number is very similar to her percentage in the total fics.
If, to be sure, we exclude the main rival ships (kiribaku, bakudeku, tododeku, todobaku, shindeku) and the main Ochako ships (izuocha, kacchako), the numbers are of course smaller, as some people tag gen as well as FM or MM, in case their fic focuses on ships and friendship:
Gen fanfics tagged with Ochako (excluding her ships and rival): 6715 over 44386
The percentages for the others characters presence is similar ( Izuku (25380), Bakugou (15368), Aizawa (16786), Todoroki (10052), All Might (19114) and Class 1-A (8496) ), but this time Ochako is pushed down of one step, as Shinsou get 7403 fanfics.
Her numbers go down similarly to other characters.
C) Ship fics minus the rivals: To make sure to exclude the supposed "they hate her because she is in the way of their ships" I excluded the main Izuocha rival ships: Bakudeku, Tododeku, Shindeku. And then I did the same with the main Kacchako rival ships: Bakudeku, Todobaku, Kiribaku. Of course, Izuocha and Kacchako were also excluded.
In this case I simply took the whole of BNHA fics and just excluded these ships. What this means is the presence of Ochako in fanfics that are about other ships.
Ochako was tagged in 19016 fics over 157534. That is 12.07% of fics only.
This is quite less than when we look at her general presence in the whole of BNHA fics.
D) Ochako in rival ships fics
I also, for curiosity, checked the percentage of her presence in specific shippy fics that used rival ships, to see if people who liked those ships were more likely to add her or exclude her. These are the percentages of Ochako Uraraka being tagged as a character in the ship for:
- Bakudeku: 7037 works over 33987
- Kiribaku: 5289 over 28229
- Todobaku: 1180 over 9764
- Tododeku: 6449 over 22059
- Shindeku: 792 over 4000
(keep in mind that for all these ships I still excluded izuocha and kacchako, to make sure to exclude "breaking up"/"cheating" fics as much as I could)
As you can see, in Tododeku and Bakudeku fics her % of presence is actually higher than in the whole of BNHA fics (around 18% in that case). Keep in mind that these are fics with no Ochako main ships, but I did not exclude every Ochako ship (ex. Tsuchako or Togachako).
Now, let's put all our percentages together.
As you can see, rival ships fanfics actually had a higher percentage of Ochako Uraraka in them than non-ships or other ships. In particular, Tododeku was at first place, followed by Bakudeku fanfics. Then we have Kiribaku at 18% which is the same we have in all fanfics on AO3, and the same for just gen fanfics.
When we actually exclude rival ships, then the percentage of Ochako's presence decrease.
The lowest was actually for all the other non-Uraraka ships and non rival ships. In this case we had ships like Shinkami, Aizawa/Mic, friendship fics etc. and they only had a 12% of Ochako presence.
I think this concludes that, at least for what concerns AO3 and using tags as a proxy, Ochako Uraraka is not sidelined or hated by rival ships more than non-rival shippers.
Now, I was wondering: you know, maybe it is the same for all characters. Unless they are on ships that focus on them, we have them sidelined, 20% or less of presence. Let's check Bakugou and Todoroki.
E) Similar patterns for other characters?
They do follow a similar trend as Uraraka, but they actually have a higher presence in gen fics...
Uraraka has a higher presence in rival ships than she has in gen (non shippy) fics, while Bakugou and Todoroki have the opposite, which is why I would expect.
Now, next post will be a summary-

Hi! How are you? If you don't mind can I ask you about todobaku status in your poll? I'm curious and I didn't see you post about it on reddit where you posted about all the other ships :)
Hi!! It's going to be the next post :D
I will post Todobaku, FF ships and then all the rest, before posting all the comparisons between ships!
EDIT: I posted them here! https://www.reddit.com/r/BokuNoShipAcademia/comments/wcjpmd/bnha_ships_survey_todobaku_results/

Shipping and fandom in BNHA: the survey questions + caution
This is an addendum to the (soon to be posted) results of a survey I decided to do on shipping, ships and the BNHA fandom.
Here I will share some warnings and then the questions of the survey.
The survey stayed open between the 8 of August (Europe time) and the 10 of August and got 640 responses.
Admittedly, I am usually not a fan of online surveys as the sample collected really depends on how viral the survey goes and where it is shared. For this reason, I will now share where the survey was posted:
Reddit (subreddits: Bokunoshipacademia, Bakudeku, Wonder Duo, Izuocha, Kiribaku, Kacchako, Tododeku, Kacchako_Bad, Kamijirou, Todomomo): Reddit is one of the few platforms where F/M ships are more popular and get more engagement than M/M ships, so keep this in mind
Deviantart (an anime group, a BNHA group), where it did not receive much interest
My personal twitter (but no retweet, so I don't expect too many people to have filled it), and I retweeted it on an anti-Bakudeku convo
Discord (I am in a couple of small Bakudeku, Todobaku discords)
Because of the way the sample was skewed towards reddit, I think these are valid assumptions:
This survey cannot be used as a way to define what the most popular ships are, but only what the popular ships are on reddit
For some stats on popular ships check my past analysis on ao3
This survey cannot be used as a way to define what the most popular character is, but only who they are on reddit, mainly
For some stats on popular characters check my past anime figure purchases analysis and popularity poll analysis
This survey CAN be used to check attitudes and preferences among shippers. For example, if all Izuocha shippers love Kaminari, in the survey, I do think this could reflect overall Western Izuocha shippers, but keep in mind that this could only be a picture of Izuocha shippers on reddit
