Swan Song (Todd Stephens film)
Summary: A former hairdresser receives a request from a former client - to do her hair and make-up at her funeral.
Increasingly heartbreaking drama with Udo Kier's Pat struggling to maintain stoic(ish) facade as he revisits old haunts and old faces.
Rating: 4.5/5

This has been on my Watchlist for awhile!
There’s something really beautiful here about the entire generations of queer elders we lost due to the AIDS crisis or, like Udo Kier’s Patrick is so afraid of, are now forgotten because their only family was a found one and they’re all gone now. Like so many elements of this movie are truly beautiful and profound. It’s not just the loss of Pat’s husband but the loss of so many queer folks that we’re mourning in this movie.
Just like it’s not just the betrayal of Rita (Linda Evans) that we’re feeling, but the betrayal of every conservative white woman (looking at you in particular, Pat Reagan) who was fine with fraternizing with the queer community when they could get someone out of it: gossip, haircuts, clothes, jewelry, etc. but gave the cold shoulder when push came to shove and it was so, SO important for these “friends” to step up and be supportive of their “gay best friends.”
Like there’s really a lot being said here with this movie but I think my problem is with the script itself. The dialogue feels a bit too ham-fisted and obvious and expository along with some weaker supporting roles (the bartender in particular). There were times when this felt like watching Twin Peaks in just how unnatural some of the conversations felt.
Udo Kier was of course wonderful. He gives just such a gorgeous, honest performance here and it’s so easy to fall in love with his Pat and go through every emotion he’s experiencing on this bizarre (and often very funny!) odyssey. I just wish the rest of the movie was at that same level 100% of the time instead of stumbling so much.

My favorite thing about Sweeney Todd is that Sweeney gets into the killing-and-baking people business because he’s a deeply broken man destroyed by an unjust and corrupt system that cost him his freedom and family and has been driven mad by revenge.
And Mrs Lovett does it because somthin wrong with her <3
