Namjoon’s letter arrived a few days after your first video call. You read it with a grin. You’d just got back from your classes. Any minute, your phone would ring with your daily call from Namjoon, as soon as he woke up, which meant you got to hear his husky morning voice and see his beautiful bare face.
The sudden buzzing sent your heart racing, and as quickly as your fingers would allow, you picked up the phone.
“You thought I would hate you for being RM?” You asked without so much as a greeting.
“Well good morning to you, too.” Namjoon chuckled. “Got my letter, huh?”
“You’re dodging the question.”
He let out a sleepy sigh that turned into a yawn. You watched the way it stretched his features, his eyes squeezing shut. God, he was so cute sometimes…
“So maybe I was a little afraid you would hate me. But can you blame me? You’re literally the coolest person on the planet, it’s no wonder you took it in stride. Anyone else...someone who had been an ARMY for a while, maybe…”
“I get it. That’s scary.” You nodded, setting him at ease. You weren’t mad at him for being afraid. You didn’t think you had it in you to be mad at him for that. “But, everything happens for a reason. There’s a reason I didn’t hear about BTS until recently. Thanks for the song recommendations, by the way, you dork.”
“Any time, darling.” He grinned. Your heart took a little leap forward. Until recently, pet names were sort of uncharted territory, they still were. So even this little one made in jest was enough to get your blood pumping. “What are your plans for the day?”
“Not much. I already finished classes, so I’ll probably just spend the rest of the night writing your letter.”
“Time zones…” Namjoon lamented. It did look a little dark outside your window…
“Time zones.” You agreed. “You’re living in the future, Joon. Your today is my tomorrow.”
“That’s deep.” He chuckled. “I sent out your Christmas present the other day. I was hoping you and I could do a video call and open them together once they both come in.”
“That’d be perfect. I sent yours out too, so it should be on the way there, but the US Postal Service is weird, so it might not get to you for a while.”
“I’m patient.”
“Good thing, too, or this whole thing wouldn’t have worked out.” You laughed, and so did he. Even though you had only been in immediate contact for a little while now, you couldn’t imagine going back to a world where you barely knew what he looked like. Now, however, you had an abundance of information about him ready at your fingertips.
“Hyunggggg,” whined a voice beside Namjoon. He continued saying something in Korean that you didn’t understand.
“It’s not my fault you stay up late playing video games.”
Oh, that must have been Namjoon’s roommate, Tae, you figured, upset that Namjoon was up so early making noise.
“Sorry about him. What were you saying?”
“It’s fine, Namjoon. Tell Tae I’m sorry for waking him up.”
“It’s okay, (Y/N)...” Tae mumbled from the next bed over, shifting and turning away from their fearless leader.
“So I’ve been watching all of your old music videos.” You grinned at the way his face paled, eyes widening. “It’s kind of fun watching little teenage Namjoon. You were what, like eighteen when you debuted?”
“Jeez, something like that, yeah. Ugh that’s so embarrassing.”
“You were still fine as hell, though.” Your face scrunched as you thought. “Well, after the mini-afro, maybe.”
Namjoon shook his head, making a noise of disbelief. “I still can’t get over the fact that you actually find me attractive.”
“Okay, but I’m not the only one, though. There are entire Facebook pages dedicated to your dimples. I joined like three of them the other day.”
“That’s ridiculous.” He laughed, showing them off. You swore, you almost swooned at the sight. “I’m really not that attractive.”
“Are you kidding me? You’re kidding me. Namjoon...I don’t know how to express this in words. You are the hottest human being I’ve ever laid my eyes on. When you’re performing, there’s just this leader energy about you and it is so sexy. And then there are those videos of you at fansigns and you are so frickin cute. I don’t even know what to do with you. You’re not allowed to be that cute and that hot simultaneously. It’s not fair.”
By the time you finished, your soulmate resembled a very flustered tomato, covering his eyes with his long fingers. “Stop…”
“Not until you realize how fine you are. I could go on and on about how much I like the way you’ve been parting your hair lately or how gorgeous you always look, even in the mornings like this when you don’t have makeup on and-”
“Okay, okay, I get it. It’s just...hard to believe things like that when it’s a literal goddess telling me.”
“Oh hush. I’m not-”
“You are. You are so, so gorgeous. All I can think about is kissing your perfect lips and running my fingers through your pink hair.” It was your turn to blush. “I seriously…” he huffed. “I really just need you in my life. I need to hold you. Like. Now. I need to hold you now. I think I’m going to die of (Y/N) deficiency at this rate.”
“Cheesy-ass dork.” You snickered, shaking your head.
Someone knocked on Namjoon’s door. When he looked up, Yoongi was coming through. “Breakfast is ready.”
“Thanks, hyung. We’ll be out in a second.” Namjoon told the shortest rapper, who nodded and left as quickly as he’d come. Namjoon looked at you, a longing look in his eyes. “I’ve gotta go, baby. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Have a good...right, it’s not morning there. Have a good night. Text me if anything interesting happens.”
“Will do. Have a good day, Joonie.”
And then you hung up, that familiar warm, yet empty feeling settling over your heart. You clicked your pen a few times, looking over the paper sitting in front of you. Recently, you’d purchased some nicer stationary with little crabs and seashells on them. You had yet to send Namjoon one of them, but you figured the purchase would encourage you to write fewer rough drafts.
You lowered the tip of the pen to the paper and the words started flowing.

“Dear Namjoon,
I had a very similar dream to yours. I was wrapped up in one of your sweaters. The sleeves hung past my fingers and I was baking Christmas cookies. And then you walked into the kitchen and I woke up. I’ve been trying to get back to that dream, though. It does, however, make me feel a lot better that it won’t stay a dream forever.
As you can see, I have enclosed a picture of myself from a Christmas party last year, something festive to make my Halloween picture a little less lonely. I expect a picture in return, as agreed upon.
I cannot wait to read your book. Send it whenever you’re ready for me to read it. As soon as I get off for break, I’ll have a bunch of time on my hands to work on it. Do you want edits or just feedback? I can do either. Or both. Whatever floats your boat. Ending books isn’t easy. It’s actually really hard. I think the key is to close the doors that make sense to, and leave the rest open. That way, there’s room for a sequel. It helps to read through everything again and make sure you didn’t leave any storylines hanging.
Also, after reading your letter and talking to you face to face every day since the first time, I can’t believe you were so nervous to tell me who you are. I mean, I can believe it. I get it. It’s tricky. You’re a worldwide superstar, a rising American heartthrob, if you will. I’m just a film student with no idea what she’s going to do with the rest of her life. Meanwhile, you’re filming music videos the likes of which I couldn’t even dream of creating. Spring Day’s MV seriously made me cry. The cinematography in it is so beautiful. The lighting, the colors, the song, your face...it seriously blew me away. Not to mention all of your other MVs.
I also watched some of JK’s Golden Closet Films, and I’d just like to ask: HOW? How does this boi...this BOI with no formal film education churn out something as beautiful as he always seems to? The editing, the skill, I just...wow. If you could ask him for some tips for me, I would be super grateful.

You should have warned me that you were going to send me the cutest picture on the whole planet. I love your Rudolph sweater. Does the nose light up? Also, is that your natural hair color??? You said you’d never had any crazy colors before pink, but I guess that doesn’t really apply to colors that could be deemed ‘natural’.
I have also attached a picture of myself. It was really hard to find one of me that isn’t already online, so I asked the other members for help and they managed to dig up that one that they had been saving to use for my birthday this year, but forgot. Consider it a sneak peek.
As far as my book-to-be goes, I would love edits and feedback. Really, whatever you think needs to be fixed, I will do it without a second question. After so many NaNoWriMos, you have to be a pro, right? I’ll email it to you. Mine is [email protected].
I think you forget that I’ve seen one of your film projects. I have. And it made my cry uncontrollably. It was beautiful and heart-wrenching and every other emotion I can think of. Though, to be fair, I didn’t have much to do with the production of the video. That would be our director, who has tons of experience in the field. All you need is time and then you’ll be cranking out masterpiece after masterpiece. That Oscar is right around the corner, baby, just you wait.
I asked Jungkook for some tips for you, and he said the key is to just keep playing with things until you like how they look. Play with the colors, the music, the speed, the cropping, whatever you want. Granted, he basically grew up in this industry, so it’s no wonder he’s so good at it.
I can’t believe Christmas is coming up so soon. Your last letter put me in a cookie mood, so if I put on weight because of it, I’m blaming you. Jin’s been trying out some recipes at my suggestion, and they’re all really good. His only request was that I stay the hell away from the kitchen. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I’m clumsy as fuck and I break and/or burn everything I touch. You have that to look forward to. Sorry jagiya.

Snow drifted down, covering your little city in white fluff, truly transforming it into a winter wonderland. Namjoon’s latest letter was between your fingers as you read it by the fireplace, a mug of cocoa sitting on the table beside you. At long, long last, you were home for Christmas. He’d told you in your phone call about a week ago that his tattoo had changed, and you’d had a mini heart attack before he read off the new one, only for you to discover it was your home address, where your parents lived.
So, you sat there, as cozy as you had been in a long, long time, wrapped in the softest sweater you owned, a warm blanket draped over your legs. Every once in a while, you would look up and imagine what it would be like to see Namjoon’s tall figure leaning against the doorframe to the den, mistletoe hanging over his head. Everything would be better if he was there, you decided. And yet, because of the miles and miles and miles stretched between you, you’d have to remain separate for at least a little while longer.
Your thoughts were only pulled from your warm thoughts of Namjoon when there was a knock at the door. When you opened it, it was all of your friends standing outside in the snow, wearing the ugliest Christmas sweaters they could find. You let them in with warm hugs and well-wishes.
“Merry Christmas, (Y/N).”

Not all of Hong Kong’s major sights are in town – hop aboard the ferry or the cable car to see the Big Buddha at the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, or wind your way out to the east of Hong Kong for a stroll around the old fishing port of Sai Kung and its buzzing seafood street.

The gods of literature and the military are celebrated here in one of the oldest temples in Hong Kong. Built in the 1840s, you’ll find two unique chairs inside that were once used to carry these deities through the city during festivals. Former visitors have left sticks of incense over the years, which are now hanging from the ceiling; you can still buy one in hopes of fulfilling a wish, while a fortune teller runs a brisk business to one side of the temple. Man Mo is very much on the tourist trail, but with very good reason, and handy for antique shopping along Hollywood Road.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: Man Mo’s traditional architecture makes for a delicate contrast with the surrounding (rather dull) skyscrapers.

Surrounded by high-rises, this downtown racecourse is one of the greatest stadiums on earth to enjoy a sweaty, noisy and adrenaline-pumping horse race at night. Dating back to 1844, the 55,000-seat racecourse is one of the earliest public facilities in colonial Hong Kong. Regular races take place every Wednesday and Saturday from September to June on the 30-meter-wide grass track. A 978-seat iPad-equipped betting hall is located on the second floor of platform one. Visitors can either pay HK$10 (US$1.3) to sit on the public spectator seats or HK$100-150 (US$13-19) to enter the member-only zone. There are a total of seven restaurants and bars in the complex from Cantonese dining to al fresco drinking. On the second floor of the Happy Valley Stand of the racecourse, there is a 670-square-meter museum, Hong Kong Racing Museum, tracing the past and present of the city’s enduring pastime.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: Even if you’re not interested in racing, you can’t help but enjoy the spectacle of this very Hong Kong entertainment.

The Kowloon Walled City was truly infamous as it was the only district in Hong Kong that avoided British rule during the 1840 Qing Dynasty. So who ruled the walled city? No one! It was in a state of lawlessness and ruin until it was demolished and the site turned into an award-winning park in the 20th century. It is home to Bonsai trees, relics from the Qing Dynasty, and a popular giant chessboard. This is the ultimate urban regeneration project, not just in Hong Kong but just about anywhere in the world. There’s always a pleasant air of calm, whatever the time of day.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: This would be a first-rate park anywhere; but its history makes it unique.

This intriguing museum traces the relatively recent history of medical science in Hong Kong. In 1906, in response to Hong Kong’s ongoing epidemic of bubonic plague, the Bacteriological Institute opened in this building as the city’s first medical laboratory. Over the decades the focus changed (as did the name, to the Pathological Institute), and the building eventually was turned into a museum. Today it houses several galleries with exhibits devoted to Chinese herbal medicine, dentistry, and a unique comparison of Chinese and Western medicine. The building itself is quite interesting as well; among its charms are several fireplaces, a beautiful entry hall, and carefully tiled floors.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: This is not only an unusual museum in a lovely old building, but its contents are also well interpreted.

Po Lin translates to “precious lotus,” and this monastery is one of the most famous of Hong Kong’s numerous attractions. In addition to being one of the most opulent and grandest temples in the country, this is also home to the famous “Big Buddha,” which measures more than 100 feet high. Made of bronze and seated in the mythical cross-legged repose, this statue is an attraction on its own. The views of the countryside are spectacular, and an excellent vegetarian cuisine is served by monks in the canteen. Most people come here by road or cable car, both exciting journeys in themselves.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: You can’t ask for a bigger contrast to downtown Hong Kong than this hilltop retreat with its superb views.
Ed’s expert tip: If you’re reasonably fit, it’s perfectly possible to hike up here either from Tung Chung or Shek Pik Reservoir.

A hidden gem of Hong Kong, this fishing town is where Hong Kongers retreat for sea-swimming, kayaking and some of the city’s best seafood. The center of the town is a 1,000-meter-long street lined with seafood stalls. Each looks like a mini aquarium as the boss displays an amazing array of freshly-caught seafood for diners to order. Across the street, fishermen sell curious looking catch right off the boat at the pier. Many of them also offer sailing trips around the surrounding islands for around US$20. Some six kilometers south of the seafood street is Trio Beach, a nice soft-sand stretch with calm and clean water, relaxed atmosphere and opportunities for seaside barbecue. For the truly energetic type, Sai Kung Country Park provides some of the most challenging but rewarding hiking experiences through mountains to beaches.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: There’s something very laid-back about Sai Kung, and especially in the older parts of town.

Yes, there’s even a Madame Tussauds in Hong Kong. Exhibits include “Hong Kong Glamour” (rich, famous and/or powerful), “Historical and National Heroes” (such as former President Hu Jintao, the British Royal Family, and astronaut Neil Armstrong), “World Premier” (national and international film celebrities), “The Champions” (athletes like David Beckham and Tiger Woods), “Music Icons” (international stars like Elvis and Madonna displayed alongside Chinese pop sters like Leslie Cheung, Teresa Teng and Joey Yung). As always at Tussauds, the waxworks are amazingly lifelike, enough to make you do a double-take, even in an age when international celebrities are so familiar from the media.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: The original Madame T opened its doors in Paris in the 18th century: talk about an enduring attraction.

Tung Choi Street is Hong Kong’s street shopping center. Not far from the Ladies Market in the north lies a treasure island that’s uniquely Chinese, the Goldfish Market. This fascinating market is a great place for families to visit. Bags upon bags of live goldfish in different sizes and colors can intrigue even the naughtiest kids. These are sold as pets as the Chinese consider goldfish a sign of good luck and some of the rarer species in the market can fetch great prices. Besides the kaleidoscope-like display of goldfish, the market also sells other small pets including turtles, rabbit and hamsters.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: There’s no razzmatazz involved here, just a straightforward chunk of life in downtown Hong Kong.

Star Ferry is the loveliest attraction in Hong Kong. This 115-year-old service is one of these rare attractions that are hailed by both tourists and locals. Shuttling between Tsim Sha Tsui on Kowloon side, and Central and Wan Chai on Hong Kong island, these 20-minute boat rides represent a lifestyle of the past: slow, soothing and stress-free. That’s exactly where the excitement and enjoyment lies. It’s fascinating to see the hyper-busy city from these boats: century-old colonial buildings rub shoulders with glass-walled skyscrapers on the two jam-packed waterfronts. The 552-meter mountain boasts that classic Hong Kong view. Near the summit there is an entertainment and viewing complex called Peak Tower where travelers can snap that perfect souvenir photo. In the foreground, a forest of skyscrapers rises in eye-opening density beneath your feet while Victoria Harbour glitters in distance. Go on a nice day, you can also make out the outlying islands scattered over the South China Sea. Various modes of transport reach the top but the 1,350-meter-long tram (funicular) line is most popular. The 125-year old track is said to be the first railway in Asia and the eight-minute ride can reach as steep as 30 degrees.
Recommended for Sightseeing because: Missing out the Peak is like ignoring the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Buckingham Palace in London.
Ed’s expert tip: The lush mountain also provides great hiking opportunities. Hikers can bypass the tourist viewing deck and reach the less-crowded summit via several footpaths.

Joe’s Climate World: What’s going on in Siberia (TUE-6/23)
It’s going to be a Top 10 Summer Day in KC I think today. Lower dew points and pleasant by late June standards temperatures. That’s a good combination and while we’ll warm up a bit more tomorrow…the dew points won’t be that bad…so enjoy the weather and remember some sun screen too!
Also of note…I’ll be taking a few more days off starting tomorrow…so no blogs till next next week or so. Normally I’d get something out on Monday but I don’t think I will be able too because I’ll be helping out with a golf tournament I think.

Discussion:
So a couple of items in the weather news lately that I wanted to touch on for you. I sort of took care of the advancing dust from Africa yesterday so no need to get to much more involved in that. I did though want to touch upon the headlines that are coming from the Siberia area, where temperatures are going nutty warm these days.
In a nutshell there is a weather station up in Verkoyansk, Russia that hit 100° a couple of days ago. That location is about 70 miles or so north of the Arctic Circle…I believe up at 67° north in latitude. IF this observation verifies and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) thinks it might…it would be the hottest ever so far north. As a matter of fact…this town is more than 1000 miles farther north that the latitude of Fairbanks, AK!
Here is the note from the WMO…
“The World Meteorological Organization will seek to verify claims of a new Arctic record temperature of 38° Celsius (100.4 F) in the Russian town of Verkoyansk amid a prolonged Siberian heatwave and increase in wildfire activity. The record was reported by media to have occurred on 21 June in a place which is more traditionally regarded as one of the world’s coldest places. WMO is asking for confirmation of the temperature from the Russian state meteorological agency Roshydromet. The WMO Weather and Climate Extremes Archive will seek to verify whether this is a new Arctic record.”

There are some years where we don’t get to 100° here. Heck I think Miami has hit 100° once in their recorded weather history.
As you can see in the following tweet though…it’s been sizzling out there this month, and really this past Spring there.

Now during the month of June…their average high is around 68° and it wasn’t as if the next day was that much cooler…95°
Has anything like that happened before. Well there is some very questionable data that perhaps in 1913 it was hotter but research into that data seems to say that it was not correct. Regardless…this year has been weirdly warm in that region. Here is a map showing temperatures for the year in that region some 13° above average…which is just bizarre. That map shows India in the bottom middle and Russia up top where the heat is centered. By the way, they’ve been keeping records there about as long as we have in KC…back to the 1880s
Here is a broader perspective…
Oh and according to the EURO model…the next 10 days there are going to be running some 10° above average as well.
This has set of a series of other events. Fires up there aren’t that unusual I believe but there are a lot of them this year it appears, perhaps more than typical.

Why is that important…because the soot/ash/pollution from the fires settles on top of the glaciers…that allows the ice to absorb more of the sun’s energy and melt quicker. This is obviously the melting time of the year there with near constant sunshine at that latitude but add in soot on top of ice and that melting speeds up.
Remember the story last month about how there was a massive oil spill up there?

Apparently with the permafrost melting so much there some of the storage tanks may have collapsed and about 150,000 barrels of diesel was released into the land and waterways. The environment up there is a mess to begin with…but this was pretty bad apparently.

Now there have been times in the past that temperatures have been crazy high…like well into the 90s high at that particular location…but again…just another degree or two added on
I’m sure there are other not so good things happening up there because of this unusual heat. The sea ice up there which helps to reflect the sunlight back into the atmosphere is breaking up quicker and more extensively. That allows the waters up there to absorb the heat…making them warmer in the big picture.

I have a question about car insurance. I was recently shopping around for quotes for car insurance. I had gotten an email about Washington Mutual Car Insurance, so I decided to get a quote. I was astounded when they quoted me with $2500 every 6 months or $5,000 a year. I was just completely blown away. My car, a 2004 Nissan Sentra, is barely even worth that much. I called them up and asked why they were quoting me that rate and they said it was because of my age and credit score. I am only 23 and I have really bad credit, but there is NO OTHER insurance company that quoted me a rate anything near as high as that. Progressive quoted me $600 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Geico $613 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Allstate was $1,200 every 6 months or $2,400 a year. And State Farm was $800 every 6 months, $1600 a year. These quotes were all for identical insurance policies. I have never been in an accident, never been arrested, never been given a ticket for ANYTHING. Does age and credit score make that much of a difference? That is insane, no one in their right mind would pay the full value of their car every year in insurance fees. What do you think?""

Being a 19 year old male who lives in London, insurance was clearly going to be a problem. I have however found some decent quotes which include having a tracker fitted. Now, I don't mind it too much but I do have some worries: a) The location/address: on the quote, I provided a relative's address which is outside of London (the address is about 40 to 50 minutes away from my actual address). Consequently, the price was cut by about half! The worry I have is that if I have a tracker installed, won't it be obvious to the insurer that this isn't my real home address when they see me parking and basically using my actual address instead of the relatives'? I've been in 3 car accidents but was not at fault for any of them (2 of the times my car was sitting still! lol) and I've never gotten a ticket for any of those accidents. I used to have insurance through State Farm, full coverage for a 2004 Jeep Liberty that cost 50-60 a month in upstate NY. While driving to NYC one winter I got a speeding ticket, my first ticket ever! I was going I think 82(?) in a 65. This was just before I moved to NYC, and because I got the ticket in a podunk little county I was driving through I had no idea what the name was, the ticket flew out my door and I lost it. I figured they would mail me something else to tell me the payment was late but I never received anything else about it. Well I found out later it was because I moved, even though I moved about 2 months after the fact they wait quite a while to send another notice, and I never received it. Thus, my license was suspended but I never knew. I never got caught driving without it either. So I moved here in 2007 with my Jeep which I was very behind payments for, and then it got towed away for alternate side parking BS. I could have borrowed the money back then to pay to get it out but I let it go. Alright so long story short, I don't have the truck, it was auctioned. I'll be done paying for it through a collection agency settlement offer this May. If I had kept the truck, I would be paying 200+ more a month than I pay now, and I wouldn't have been done paying it til August 2011. Plus I would have had to pay to catch it up the 3 months I was behind, plus pay my boyfriends brother back who was willing to lend me the money to get it out of the car jail (lol) I had the suspension lifted last July so I could rent a car, again no issues. So I'm thinking of buying a 2,000 car (cash! I learned my lesson) in June when I'm done paying for the truck and I want to get no fault insurance. I know it will be a lot more here then what I used to pay, and in addition I now have a suspension that wasn't there before. Hi and thanks for taking time to help me out. I have bought a BMW 540i (1997) back in January. I was really happy as this was my first car. Two weeks ago, I was driving to France and my gearbox died leaving me only with the first gear working. I went to a garage in France and we phoned the insurance but the insurance said that it cannot guarantee that it would cover me. They offered me to leave the car in France and to go back to London by myself. I refused to consider this option as I could not allow my self to stay in France (I had to go back to work) for more than the week-end and I could not afford to take the train/plane from Paris to London. The insurer said that they would not cover any costs associated with me going back to London. So I had to get the car back to London, and to drive it back home. I went to a garage where a very nice person accepted to take care of the car. He phoned the insurance and arranged everything. The insurer sent some engineers who inspected the car and the insurance said to the garage that they would only cover 65% of the costs...due to the mileage of the car (83,000 miles roughly). The garage has repared the car without asking me if I was ok to pay the last 35% and the insurer did not mention it to me either. I am going to call the insurance tomorrow to get more details about this story...but my concern is that : 1/ I am afraid of talking to them and to commit a mistake that could cost me more 2/ I don't know exactly what I am entitled to get and what are my resources in case they just refuse to change anything on this 3/ They ask me to pay the money upfront (around 2,000) and then I would have to make a claime but...I don't feel confident doing this..and I am far from having this money... 428 Cobra Jet Engine Detailing, Part 2
Last month, we brought you Part 1 of 3 on how to detail a 428 Cobra Jet engine to concourse level, with Marcus Anghel of Anghel Restorations in Scottsdale, Arizona. Here we present Part 2, and next month we’ll bring you Part 3. So if you missed Part 1, go back and now and check it out (Hard Core Resto Tech: Detailing a 428 Cobra Jet Engine Part 1) as a refresher/introduction.
This story was originally done in the March 1994 issue of Mustang Monthly, by Bob Perkins, and was one of the most thorough detailing articles written on the subject. That article, like so many others of that time, was mostly with black-and-white photos, so here we will update that—plus add some more in-depth detailing items. Although not every single option and feature can be shown in this story, this guide should serve as a good basis for some of the common detailing tips and tricks.
1. All Cobra Jet engines used a 735-cfm Holley carburetor originally from the factory. Refer to the chart for exact numbers and applications. This information would be stamped in the air horn in front of the choke plate. Date codes would also be stamped in the same area and are decoded in a year/month/week format. Example of 074 would decode as 1970/7th month/4th week. Note that for the months 0=October, A=November and B = December. There also would be an aluminum ID tag that is typically mounted on the passenger side of the carb on the choke assembly. Front metering block would be stamped and identified with a 5673, and the rear metering block would be identified with a 5671.

1a. The early 1968 1/2 carburetors had a unique feature in that they had three locating pins around the air cleaner boss and mounting surface. You can see in the photos below what these look like on these rare carbs.
2. The motor mounts that attach to the engine block are a bare metal finish. The rubber insulators would be painted black and could have a yellow ID stripe on them—especially the service replacement DIZA versions we see today. Original C8 mounts would have a red stripe on them. The ’69 and ’70 convertibles used a different rubber insulator as specified in the parts books.
3 The oil pans used on the Cobra Jets have beveled edges at the rear of the oil pan, as shown here. This gives extra clearance that is needed for the center link and tie rods and power steering ram. Date codes are typically on the bottom with a FoMoCo stamping as well.
4. Original oil dipstick tubes are unique with the spot welds that they have for the attaching bracket and also with the FoMoCo that is stamped on that bracket as well. These would be painted blue with the engine.
5. BF32 Autolite spark plugs are what Ford used on these engines originally. Spark plugs with a star on them were typically only seen until 1968. Later versions did not have this star.
6. The ported vacuum switch that is mounted in the thermostat housing was a C8AE-A version for 1968 and 1969 and a D0AE-A for 1970. The change over date was approximately Aug./Sept. 1969. Date codes are a month/year format with the middle character representing the manufacturing plant—H for Hanover, Illinois, and K for Kalamazoo, Michigan. Note that the switch was installed on the engine when it was painted so it could have some overspray on the lower section.
7. There were several different alternators that were used on the Cobra Jet engine as identified by the chart above. Most variations are with a 55-amp output. Main features to look for and identify in the housing is the AUTOLITE cast into the back as shown, although some of the early 1968 cars would have this case without the AUTOLITE. The alternator cases themselves were ink-stamped with the engineering number until about February 1969. When they were ink-stamped you would typically see two of the same ink stampings on the case in different positions. The color of the ink stamp helped to identify them as well with orange for 42-amp and red for 55-amp. After February 1969 the engineering number was die-stamped into the housing after the matched color was put there, resulting in the letters and numbers not being painted over, as shown. This was done to make it easier to read. Fan blades for the alternators changed as well, with the 13-blade being used until about November 17, 1969, and then the 10-blade being used after this. This was done because the 10-blade design was less noisy than the 13-blade design.

7a. The double sheave pulleys changed from the 1968 to 1969 model year. The pulley used in 1968 was the C5AF-10A352-J2 and can be stamped on the front or back of the pulley. In 1969 this changed to the C9AF-10A352-C, which is always stamped on the front face.
8. Note the thermostat bypass hose and clamps are painted with the engine, while the water pump inlet is not. This is a commonly overlooked detail on many restorations.
9. There are a few different distributor vacuum advances that were originally used on the Cobra Jets as shown above. Version 1 was used for four-speed cars in 1968 and 1969, with its most distinguishable features being the silver band and the HP 6 stamped in the top. Version 2 was used on four-speed cars in 1970 and had a gold band and the stamping X6 stamped in the top. Version 3 was used for all automatic cars from 1968 to 1970 and is cast on the backside with the numbers 12378 and AUTOLITE. There was also a design change that happened with Version 2 around Oct./Nov. 1969 in which the vacuum hose connector on the front changed from a screw-in style to a pressed-in style, as shown.
10. Carb spacers used for 1968 and 1969 are a C8AZ-9A589-G and have no identifying marks except the word FRONT that is stamped into the tab on the front. In 1970, the design change added a rear port for the PCV system to attach the hose and changed the part to a D0OZ-9A589-A. There are no markings on the 1970 version.
11. The original thermostat housings are easily identified by the engineering number cast on the front side, which is a C8AE-8594-E. There is also a date code that would be stamped in the circle area to identify the year and month of manufacture. Another way to identify them is the dimple cast in the elbow area, as shown.
12. Oil sender units were different for cars with and without an oil pressure gauge. For those cars with an oil pressure gauge they had a zinc dichromate bulb type sender, while cars without a gauge had a green top oil sender, as shown here.
13. All Cobra Jets used the same aluminum timing cover that would be identified with the engineering number C8AE-6059-B. In addition, these are also all date-coded with a year/month format, as shown here (June 1969).
14. All Cobra Jet engines shipped in the United States had a Thermactor system (commonly called a smog system) to help reduce emissions. The heart of the Thermactor system is the air pump (or smog pump). These are all date-coded and can be easily seen on a Cobra Jet engine once installed. Date codes are read in a year/month/day/shift format. Originals here had a pressure relief valve on the side of the pump and later ones do not. The only other identification for these is the casting number stamped on the back housing, which is 7801149.
14a. Visually one of the easiest components to spot is the air bypass valve assembly (or diverter valve). Originals will say CARTER and ST LOUIS, MO on the front, and FoMoCo on the back. A date code and engineering number will be stamped in the housing as well, although this can be underneath.
14b. The smog tubes shown here are the left and right side and thread directly into the heads. Note these originals and how uneven the paint coverage was, with runs from when originally installed when the engine was painted Ford Corporate Blue.
14c. The mounting brackets used for the smog pump are shown here and consist of two brackets that would have been painted black. The larger bracket is also used as part of the alternator mounting and has an engineering number of C8AE-10156-A. The adjusting bracket was stamped C8AE-B. This is the same for all years.
14d. Smog pump clamps that were used are identified as three No. 7 Wittek clamps, one No. 9 Wittek clamp, plus typically two tower clamps on the S hose. The photo here shows the exact position of the clamps, as per the assembly manual. This was what was shown, but could have varied on cars. Clamps would be a zinc dichromate finish. The No. 9 clamp was used on the canister bracket connection.
14e. Note the small washer that is placed behind the smog pump adjusting bracket as a spacer. This was used on all cars except those with A/C, since they had an additional bracket that takes up that extra space. If the spacer is missing the smog pump will not line up properly.
14f. The short smog hose (left check valve inlet hose) was marked differently for 1968 as a C8OE-9B466-C engineering number. This changed in 1969 and 1970 as the hose was marked as a C9OE-9B466-A, as shown. These hoses were date-coded and can be seen in the lower picture, as the 09288 would be decoded as September 28, 1968. The hoses had a smooth texture and were not actually serviced as such. Parts books indicate to simply cut a length of hose from C8OZ-9B466-C, as this was similar enough.
14g. The long smog hose (right check valve inlet hose) would be marked with a C8OE-9B466-F engineering number and is also date-coded.
14h. The S hose (air bypass valve inlet) was marked with engineering number C8AE-9F287-A and was typically installed with two tower clamps, but also could have one Wittek band clamp, as shown.
14i. Shown here is the most common smog pump pulley used for all cars from 1968 to 1970, marked as a C8AE-9C480-A. The only exception to this is cars with A/C. In 1968 they used a pulley marked as C8AE-9C480-B and in 1969 and 1970 they used a pulley marked as C9OE-9C480-A. These pulleys had a wider groove in them to accommodate the wider belt needed to run with the A/C compressor (JC belt).
14j. Shown here are original service pieces for the nut and ferrule assemblies and the tubes that were used in the ports of the heads for the smog pump system.
14k. The system used two check valves with one mounted on each side with each smog tube assembly. Original check valves have the FoMoCo stamping on them, as shown.
15. The oil dipstick came in two different versions. The C7OE-6750-A version was used until May of 1970. After that, when a TSB was released, new oil levels were recommended and the DOOE-6750-C version was used. Note the dipstick handles—the replacement style has a dimple.
16. The original fuel filter used on all Cobra Jets was a C70E-9155-A. Notice the original paper sticker that is still in place to help identify this part. Reproductions of the sticker can be purchased today, and it is a nice detailing touch.
17. There were two different starters used. 1968 and 1969 engines used a C8AF-11001-A and 1970 engines used a DOTF-11001-A. These are date-coded as well with the example here being January 6, 1969. The starters would be painted black except around the drive end and the bolt and hardware to attach the starter cable.
18. The starter wire is routed down under the engine at the engine mount with a single loop to hold it in place and away from the exhaust manifold. Note the protective sheathing as well.
19. The engine ground wire for 1968 and 1969 was on the back of the engine and connected to the firewall, as shown. In 1970 this changed and was part of the negative battery cable. The tab connects to the voltage regulator, as shown.
20. The negative battery cable is typically secured with a plain, unmarked bolt, as shown.
21. The original upper and lower radiator hoses had a unique “snakeskin” texture. The upper radiator hose could be marked with either a Mustang or Cougar engineering number as C8ZE or C8WE, and the lower radiator hoses are a C9OE. The AY was the manufacturer ID for Firestone. Notice the spring clamps are held in place with staples to keep them in place during installation. In 1968 tower clamps were used.
22. The heat shield and snorkel were painted blue but could be a different shade than the engine. Attaching hardware is shown at the exhaust manifold and the front.
23. Two different breather cap elbows were used. In 1968, a metal elbow was used and then changed to a black plastic elbow, as shown here. The original chrome breather caps had the word AUTOLITE stamped in them; that is visible on the top surface when installed on the valve cover.
24. Original breather hose from the breather cap to the air cleaner assembly were date-stamped. This one shown here is stamped 10289, which is October 28, 1969.

Although many will be sad to see the closure of the Great Movie Ride, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is promising a new world of cartoon as a replacement. It will also have more hidden Mickeys than any other attraction anywhere in the universe. Heads will be spinning counting them all!
So how would you like to star in a movie? A movie with Mickey and Minnie as your co-stars. Well, this dream is about to become a reality. How? Simple. Step through the movie screen and become part of the filming. Anything can happen, which just makes it all the more exciting. #8: New Theater at Magic Kingdom
April 2018 Update: It looks like this project is cancelled or on hold. The details have been removed from the "coming soon" details on Disney's website. We'll update if we hear more.
The Magic Kingdom is getting a brand new theater to house world-class entertainment. Fitting right in with Main Street theming, the theater is inspired by the 1920’s Willis Wood Theater of Kansas, MO, where Walt lived after he left Marceline. The venue is expected to house world-class entertainment. Some live new reasons to visit Walt Disney World!
#9: Disney Skyliner and Minnie (Van) Transport
Disney are introducing two new methods of transport.
Skyliner
Connecting several of Disney's resorts to Hollywood Studios and International Gateway at Epcot will be the Disney Skyliner. The new gondola system will have pods decked with Disney characters giving guests a birds-eye view of the resorts and parks below.
Minnie (Van) Transport
Another means of transport, already available through the parks and resorts, is the Minnie Vans. Painted red with white dots, these distinctive cute vans give guests a point-to-point service throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. Details: Skyliner & Minnie Van
#10: Star Wars Resort
A new vacation resort based on the Star Wars theme is also planned for the future. Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is so enthusiastic, "It's unlike anything that exists today. Joe’s Climate World: What’s going on in Siberia (TUE-6/23)
It’s going to be a Top 10 Summer Day in KC I think today. Lower dew points and pleasant by late June standards temperatures. That’s a good combination and while we’ll warm up a bit more tomorrow…the dew points won’t be that bad…so enjoy the weather and remember some sun screen too!
Also of note…I’ll be taking a few more days off starting tomorrow…so no blogs till next next week or so. Normally I’d get something out on Monday but I don’t think I will be able too because I’ll be helping out with a golf tournament I think.

Today: Mostly sunny with pleasant with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s

Discussion:
So a couple of items in the weather news lately that I wanted to touch on for you. I sort of took care of the advancing dust from Africa yesterday so no need to get to much more involved in that. I did though want to touch upon the headlines that are coming from the Siberia area, where temperatures are going nutty warm these days.
In a nutshell there is a weather station up in Verkoyansk, Russia that hit 100° a couple of days ago. That location is about 70 miles or so north of the Arctic Circle…I believe up at 67° north in latitude. IF this observation verifies and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) thinks it might…it would be the hottest ever so far north. As a matter of fact…this town is more than 1000 miles farther north that the latitude of Fairbanks, AK!
Here is the note from the WMO…
“The World Meteorological Organization will seek to verify claims of a new Arctic record temperature of 38° Celsius (100.4 F) in the Russian town of Verkoyansk amid a prolonged Siberian heatwave and increase in wildfire activity. The record was reported by media to have occurred on 21 June in a place which is more traditionally regarded as one of the world’s coldest places. WMO is asking for confirmation of the temperature from the Russian state meteorological agency Roshydromet. The WMO Weather and Climate Extremes Archive will seek to verify whether this is a new Arctic record.”

There are some years where we don’t get to 100° here. Heck I think Miami has hit 100° once in their recorded weather history.
As you can see in the following tweet though…it’s been sizzling out there this month, and really this past Spring there.

Now during the month of June…their average high is around 68° and it wasn’t as if the next day was that much cooler…95°
Has anything like that happened before. Well there is some very questionable data that perhaps in 1913 it was hotter but research into that data seems to say that it was not correct. Regardless…this year has been weirdly warm in that region. Here is a map showing temperatures for the year in that region some 13° above average…which is just bizarre. That map shows India in the bottom middle and Russia up top where the heat is centered. By the way, they’ve been keeping records there about as long as we have in KC…back to the 1880s
Here is a broader perspective…
Oh and according to the EURO model…the next 10 days there are going to be running some 10° above average as well.
This has set of a series of other events. Fires up there aren’t that unusual I believe but there are a lot of them this year it appears, perhaps more than typical.

Why is that important…because the soot/ash/pollution from the fires settles on top of the glaciers…that allows the ice to absorb more of the sun’s energy and melt quicker. This is obviously the melting time of the year there with near constant sunshine at that latitude but add in soot on top of ice and that melting speeds up.
Remember the story last month about how there was a massive oil spill up there?

Apparently with the permafrost melting so much there some of the storage tanks may have collapsed and about 150,000 barrels of diesel was released into the land and waterways. The environment up there is a mess to begin with…but this was pretty bad apparently.

Now there have been times in the past that temperatures have been crazy high…like well into the 90s high at that particular location…but again…just another degree or two added on
I’m sure there are other not so good things happening up there because of this unusual heat. The sea ice up there which helps to reflect the sunlight back into the atmosphere is breaking up quicker and more extensively. That allows the waters up there to absorb the heat…making them warmer in the big picture.
