Say what you will about Pretty Little Liars but at least it was not copaganda, like it was probably the most negative depiction of the police force I've ever seen in a teen show. All the cops in Rosewood were either pervs or corrupt (or both, looking at you Wilden) or flat-out incompetent to the point where it put the Liars in real danger, like Tanner. Once in a while I'll see a post about how the Liars should've gone to the police, and why didn't they go to the police, like the police has ever protected them. Every time they tried the police just accused them of something else, the police was as much of a threatening figure to their lives as A was, and frankly that was probably the most realistic part of the show

A week later, [Y/N] came to an empty home from school. After grabbing a snack, she decided to do some reading before starting her homework.

Just as she finished up a chapter, her phone rang from next to her on her bed. When she saw the caller was Spencer, she frowned in worry. Placing the bookmark on the recent page, she closed the book before answering her phone.

"Hey, Spence," she greeted, placing her book on the nightstand before sitting up on the bed again. "Everything okay?"

"Hey, [y/n/n]. Yeah, everything's fine!" Spencer answered rather enthusiastically, which made [Y/N]'s brows furrow.

"Alright, Spence, spill," she said in a playful stern voice and heard Spencer sigh on the other end.

"I may have called you to ask a favor," the brunette answered slowly.

"Sure, what is it?" asked [Y/N].

"Toby's working for Jason and I'm really worried," Spencer explained. "Can you check on him for me, please?"

"Wait, since when did Toby start working for Jason?" [Y/N] questioned, surprised.

"Since this afternoon," Spencer replied.

"You don't sound too happy about it," [Y/N] said.

"How can I be?" Spencer sighed. "For all we know, Jason could be hiding Ian, protecting him, in that creepy house."

"Spence," [Y/N] sighed this time. "I still don't think Jason would want to help his sister's murderer."

"Then, how do you explain the shadow I saw in his house yesterday?" Spencer challenged. "[y/n/n], I was right outside talking to him when I saw someone move upstairs. And, he told me he lived alone. He was clearly lying."

[Y/N] remained silent, processing Spencer's words. She still didn't believe Jason could be helping Ian hide.

However, she did find Jason's sudden return to Rosewood pretty strange. It was true that he didn't owe anyone explanation; yet, his cold demeanor towards her friends confused her because she had thought he had changed after working on Ali's memorial with them.

"Hello? Earth to [y/n/n]?" Spencer interrupted her from her thoughts.

"Sorry, I'm here," [Y/N] replied, shaking her head, hoping to remove her suspicious thoughts regarding Jason. "But, yeah, I'll go check on him."

"Thanks so much, [y/n/n], I owe you one," Spencer breathed out.

"No problem," smiled [Y/N]. "But, I have to ask you something."

"Sure," Spencer replied.

"You literally live right next door to Jason," [Y/N] spoke. "Why not just peak and make sure Toby's okay?"

"I tried," Spencer sighed out. "But, I couldn't see anything."

"It's okay," [Y/N] chuckled. "Alright, I'll check on your defenseless boyfriend and update you soon."

"You're very funny, you know that?" Spencer deadpanned.

"Sorry, I just had to," [Y/N] giggled. "Don't worry too much, alright? I'm sure Toby's okay."

"I'll try," Spencer replied. "Thanks again, [y/n/n]."

"Of course, talk to you later," [Y/N] answered and the two said their goodbyes before hanging up.

…

Once [Y/N] got near the DiLaurentis house, she noticed a shirtless and sweaty Toby first, who seemed to be hard at work with a shovel in his hands. With another few steps, she noticed Jason who was dressed in a tight blue t-shirt and faded denim jeans as he placed some heavy bags in a wheelbarrow.

She took a deep breath in to calm her racing heart as she walked closer to the two men. Her steps must've been quiet because neither Toby nor Jason took notice of her, lost in their work.

"Hello," she greeted, causing the two men to look up at her in surprise.

"Hello, [Y/N]," Jason greeted her back with a smile, standing straight as Toby did the same.

"Hey, [y/n/n], what are you doing here?" Toby asked, resting his hands on top of the shovel.

"A little birdie told me that you got a job so I figured I'd stop by and say congratulations," she replied, hoping her breathy voice didn't give away how nervous she was -- especially with Jason's gaze on her.

"Is that little birdie's name Spencer?" Toby asked, smiling mischievously.

"Of course, not," [Y/N] said, a little too fast for her liking. "Haven't you heard? My friends and I are spending some time apart. Doctor's orders."

"I just saw you guys together recently," Jason replied before Toby could and [Y/N] looked at him. She knew he was talking about the time he caught the girls sneaking out at night a couple of days ago.

[Y/N] looked back at Toby, who had a Cheshire cat grin on his face.

"I wonder if that was before or after the doctor's orders," he commented.

"It- it was before," [Y/N] replied slowly and shifted to look at Jason when she noticed Toby didn't believe her words.

"It's alright, I won't tell anyone," Jason chuckled, holding up his hands. A few moments later, he cleared his throat before asking, "I'm gonna grab a drink. Do you guys want something?"

"I'm okay," Toby replied just as [Y/N] said, "No, thank you."

Jason gave her a smile in return before turning to walk inside the house.

"Alright, [y/n/n], what are you really doing here?" Toby asked quietly once Jason had disappeared inside the house.

[Y/N] sighed and walked closer to Toby, glancing at the closed door of the DiLaurentis house once.

"Spencer sent me," she admitted, making sure to keep her voice as quiet as Toby.

"I had a feeling," Toby sighed.

"She's really worried," [Y/N] said.

"Why is she so scared about me working for Jason?" Toby asked in genuine confusion. "I mean, he's been nothing but nice to me so far."

"She thinks he's hiding Ian," [Y/N] whispered, taking another glance at the shut door.

"That's insane!" Toby said a little loudly when [Y/N] shushed him.

"I don't know what goes through your girlfriend's brain," [Y/N] shrugged playfully.

"What do you think?" Toby asked her suddenly.

"Sorry?" [Y/N] frowned.

"Do you think Jason's suspicious too?" Toby questioned her and [Y/N] dropped her gaze from his for a moment.

"He hasn't really given me a reason to be suspicious about him so far," she finally said, looking up at Toby, who nodded at her in understanding.

Before Toby could reply to her, Jason walked out of the house, carrying out a trash bag with him.

"I would invite you guys in but the place is kind of crazy," he said once he was closer to Toby and [Y/N].

He threw the bag to the side when it opened and several bloodied gauze fell out of it.

[Y/N] stiffened in her spot and her eyes widened at the sight. She looked at Toby, who looked at her, concerned. She had a feeling Toby might've been reconsidering their conversation and to be honest, so was she.

"Uh, I cut myself," Jason explained with an awkward chuckle, rubbing his palms in his jeans.

"Hope you're okay now," [Y/N] said meekly once she was able to get some words out.

"Yeah, it was just a small cut," Jason replied and [Y/N] nodded.

"Well, I should get going now," she said, slowly backing out of the DiLaurentis yard. "It was nice seeing you two. Good night."

"Good night, [Y/N]," Jason answered.

"Thanks for stopping by, [y/n/n]," Toby told her with a smile. "Text me when you get home, okay?"

"Will do," [Y/N] smiled back at him and gave one last wave to Jason before turning around and making her way towards her home.

While walking, she sent a quick text to Spencer, letting the latter know that Toby was okay. She decided to keep the suspicious-bloodied-gauze from Jason's trash to herself as she knew sharing this with Spencer would make her friend go on a dangerous hunt to know what was up with Jason.

Made a college of Hannily!! Hanna Marin and Emily Fields!!

Hannily is and was one of the best ships in PLL, in the pilot you see Hanna offering Em a flask just incase if Em needed it! Then when Emily was attacked at the homecoming dance by Toby, Hanna sat with Emily in her bedroom. She wanted to make sure she was OK and Hanna supported Emily by saying "We love Emily nobody cares who you're with" Hanna opened her heart to Em because Hanna has always been so supportive of her ❤ especially the scene from 4 or 3 Hanna sees that someone gave Emily a CD 💿 "pretty who made that?" She asks. "Somebody from school." Em days. Hanna gave her a smile. And said. "Well whoever made it must like you a lot. If there's someone in your life that cares about you then I'm happy for you. No matter who they are." Hanna says smiling. Opening her heart ❤ to Em. Then when Emily is sad that Toby got in a accident with his bike. Hanna comforted Em by saying to Spencer. "Spence if she liked him she can cry about it." Hanna says rubbing Emily’s shoulder. Then when Hanna got hit by a car, Emily called 911 and told them what happened. Emily was so scared that Hanna was going to die, she didn't die. Then in another episode, Hanna sits on Em's steps waited for Emily because she didn't want to be alone. Hanna comforted Emily about her move to Texas! In season 2, em is moved into Hanna’s room where they can bond more. When Hanna noticed Em's hurting because of her stomach pains, she asks em if she's OK. Hanna has always been the most caring supportive friend to Em! Emily should've been with Hanna, who has supported her, who has been there for her because they have so much in common and they are each other's partners! Partners in crime! I really wished Hannily happened!!

I bet Spencer was MIA but I also bet Mona did not cc her on any of the relevant emails

Ella wins some good parent points with me by telling Aria that hey, if wearing Ali’s dress and looking through pictures of her is too much, she can tell Ali’s mom to fuck off

Ella immediately loses all those points and then some, because when her daughter tells her that some guy she knows blacked out for an entire night, maybe did something bad, and that her friends think it’s really convenient he doesn’t remember anything, Ella is not alarmed by this at all. I would have sirens going off in my head, that sounds so bad.

Toby is here to be a sweet boy building things while Spencer rants to him and I am completely okay with that. 

Poor Emily. She wants to sanity-check Samara flirting with Quinn right in front of her, but Hanna is too in her dad and Caleb feelings to care. Aria does not even notice anything wrong. I bet Aria’s like, that’s just how friends are, given her random slapping of Spencer’s butt while they share a runway later

Emily says “till summer vacation” and “till the semester ends” at different times this episode about her staying in Rosewood and those are different times because we’re still in the first semester, yeah??

I would be less judgy about Pam ditching her kid if it was more marriage problems with Wayne than mere “I miss him.” Though Pam would not tell Emily if there were marriage problems so maybe that is what’s going on.

I Must Confess Part 2

The windows fogged up so fast the air inside the car turned thick with heat and breath and tension. Noel’s hands were everywhere—her thighs, her waist, the back of her neck like he couldn’t decide what he needed to touch most.

Their mouths clashed like muscle memory—desperate and dirty, months of frustration unraveling in a kiss that tasted like sweat and adrenaline.

Lily straddled him, knees pressed against leather, his jersey still half-on, her spandex shorts shoved down just far enough.

He whispered something against her jaw—something like “mine”—and Lily whimpered as he pushed up into her like he was claiming back every part of her that had ever been touched by someone else.

It was messy and hot and fast—windows fogged, hands tangled, Lily coming apart with his name in her mouth and her fingernails digging into his shoulder blades. And when she collapsed against him, flushed and breathless, he just held her. No words. Just arms.

The front door clicked shut behind them, and the air shifted. Quieter. Softer. All the urgency drained out of their bodies and left only the ache behind—the kind that made you crave closeness more than friction.

They didn’t turn on the lights. Noel kissed her slow this time, like he had all the time in the world. Like he wasn’t in a rush to win her—because he already had.

Her shirt came off first, then his. Every touch was deliberate, reverent. His fingers mapped the curve of her back, the slope of her ribs. Lily threaded her hands through his hair, tugging just enough to make him groan.

They made it to the bed in quiet waves—mouths still moving, hands never breaking contact. Noel slid into her like it was the first time all over again. Lily arched under him, whispering his name like it meant something holy. And this time, it did. Because for the first time since everything, it wasn’t about forgetting. It was about coming home.

The front door opened before Spencer could even knock. Toby was the one who let her in, a cup of tea already in hand like he’d been expecting her.

“You okay?” he asked, eyes scanning her face.

“No,” she said. “But I will be.”

Justin was sitting cross-legged on the couch in a worn hoodie, laptop open but untouched in front of him. When he saw Spencer, his whole posture shifted.

“What happened?”

Spencer paced as she talked, faster with every sentence. “Melissa knew. About NAT. About Ian. About the videos. And my parents—they’ve known something this whole time. And Jason—Jason was with them for parts of that summer, Justin. He was there.”

Justin sat up straighter. “Wait—are you saying…”

“I think Melissa might be A,” she said, voice cracking. “Or part of it. She has motive. She has access. She hated Alison. She knew what Ian did and she covered for him. And now she’s—she’s everywhere again. Watching.”

Toby stood beside her, not touching, but close. “Do you have proof?”

“No,” she said, defeated. “Just a million red flags and a pit in my stomach the size of Pennsylvania.”

Justin glanced between them. “We’ll figure it out. Together.” Spencer dropped onto the arm of the couch and ran a hand through her hair. “I’m so tired of putting puzzles together and realizing the picture is just more knives. But Justin, you slept with Melissa, didn't you?"

Toby’s head whipped around, surprised. Justin scratched the back of his neck, jaw tightening. “Yeah. I did. We hooked up a lot that summer. Spencer flinched like it physically hurt. Justin sighed. “I’m bisexual, Spence. So yeah, sometimes it’s… complicated. But I’m not into Melissa anymore. Haven’t been for a long time.”

“You still let her in,” Spencer whispered. “You let her close.”

Justin’s voice was low. “That’s what we do with people we want to believe won’t hurt us.” Spencer sat down slowly, shoulders shaking.

Toby walked over and sat beside her without saying a word, just resting his hand lightly on her back. And for a moment, none of them spoke. The silence settled thick around them—grief, confusion, and anger. Not at Justin. No, the anger was geared at her sister.

And then—buzz. buzz. buzz. Spencer's phone.

The preview image was blurry. Low light. A parked car. The familiar outline of two people tangled in the front seat.

Toby’s gaze flicked to the windows. “Someone’s watching. Right now.” The mood in the room shifted from disbelief to dread in a breath.

The only light comes from the bluish glow of multiple monitors, screens flickering like a heartbeat. A figure moves through the shadows—gloved hands methodically working across a keyboard, clicking through timestamped footage like it’s a Netflix binge.

One screen replays the car footage. Lily. Noel. The windows fogged, her head thrown back, Noel’s face buried in her neck. It’s not graphic, but it’s intimate. Real. Vulnerable.

Another monitor shows a list of group chats. Contacts. Names. Teams. Clubs. Volleyball. Basketball. Yearbook. Football. Choir. Student council. Band.

The gloved hand clicks “Send to All.”

A progress bar loads.

Uploading: 92%… 100%. Sent.

The screen switches to a preview window of the mass text blast. No name. No sender.

Just the video.

Just the caption:

“Hope your game was as good as the after party.”

The figure leans back, satisfied. Silence hums through the room—calm, deliberate, deadly.

Artist inspiration for Process and production: Michael Spence

I found this small not-so well known painter online and fell in love with his simplistic colourful landscapes that are just very nice to look at. I saw these while I was thinking about what I might do for process and production, I decided to base the majority of my landscape paintings about places of my routine/ frequently travelled through places, on his style of bright bold areas of colour and lack of detail.

I hope to make these and the Toby Paterson paintings the bulk of this units body of work, perhaps with doing series of two where two paintings, in distinctly different styles, depict the same place in two radically different ways.

PBS Masterpiece has picked up Mr Bates vs the Post Office, which will air in April.

Starring BAFTA-winners Toby Jones and Monica Dolan, the four-part show launched at the start of 2024 and dramatizes what is now deemed one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in UK legal history.

When money started to seemingly disappear from its local branches, the government-owned Post Office wrongly blamed their own managers for its apparent loss. For more than a decade, hundreds were accused of theft and fraud, and many were even sent to prison – leaving lives, marriages, and reputations in ruins. But the issue was actually caused by errors in the Post Office’s own computer system – something it denied for years.

Since launch, the post office scandal has dominated UK newspapers and news websites for weeks now and numerous strides have been made in the drive for justice for hundreds of post office workers.

It has beaten Downton Abbey to become ITV’s biggest new drama launch in over a decade and is averaging 13.1M viewers per episode – a rare feet for a British show.

“Our ambition in telling this story was simply that the Subpostmasters felt heard,” said EP Patrick Spence, who produced for ITV Studios alongside Little Gem.

Susanne Simpson, Masterpiece EP, added: “Mr Bates vs The Post Office is a testament to the people who persisted in their search for truth and justice. The producers of this powerful drama have reignited the public interest in the Subpostmasters’ 20-year quest for justice. I’m incredibly proud that we will bring this story to the American audience.”

My blorbo returns, having achieved inner peace offscreen and yet still makes insane decisions, Mona gets drawn into the liars’ orbit, and Melissa becomes a major suspect.

Emily is very annoyed to be left out of Sparia delivering the money to Jonah. She’s like, what do you mean I don’t get to be one of the ringleaders of investigating shit anymore? 

Wilden appears to be genuinely trying to figure out what’s going on but he remains a creeper throughout.

Spencer tells Melissa that Jason is their brother. Spencer and wanting to be honest with her family....

Paige is more chill now but is still drawn to Emily like a magnet. I really like her body language in all three of her scenes

I get distracted in this scene by Paige’s background line to some other swimmer: “Just don’t sit Coach Fulton anywhere near Mr. Donovan”

What intriciate social dynamics has Paige been exposed to as swim team captain, I do not think she would enjoy that aspect at all. 

I also get distracted by Paige saying Emily is the star of the team. Emily has been off the team since her cursed ulcer! Why does this team revolve around Emily!! I say this as a big Emily fan.

In trying to recruit Emily to fundraise with her, Paige says “Who could possibly turn you down?” and my friends note that Emily is so easy with how this gets her to say yes. I think Paige actually does have correct fundraising strategy here, Emily Fields is the kid to have ask for money, even after the shovel arrest.

Hanna thinks Mona doesn’t understand the dangers of A, Mona says she “can handle some radioactive texting” and I cackle because yeah Mona, you sure can.

Ashley says Tom could sue for custody if word got out about Ashley fucking Wilden to get out of the theft charge, and it’s like, Ashley, bro, Tom Marin does not want this daughter, Tom Marin would like to sue to never acknowledge this daughter again. 

Team Sparia meeting Jonah in the park is delightful. Aria keeps asking Spencer what time it is and I can already see a future where that is their married dynamic. 

Then they are so irate that Jonah gives them an address, not a number. Girls, phone numbers don’t necessarily have names associated with them, do we need Caleb to explain this to you!

Paige’s mom calls, giving Paige an excuse to mention to Emily that she came out.

Both the PLL podcasts I dabble in theorized that Paige set an alarm and didn’t actually get a call,  and I must defend my blorbo’s honor here, which is to say: Paige does not have enough brain cells to plot like that 😭 she is clearly trying and failing to play it cool with Em this episode but she is not playing 4D chess, I’m pretty sure 80% of her brain this episode is devoted to going “Emily! Emily Fields!! Hanging out with Emily Fields!!!” 

I do like it as a character note for Paige’s mom, who we will never hear about again. She’s like, my daughter is gay okay, but who is she dating?? She’s with Emily, The One Gay Girl of Rosewood, clearly this is the answer. So wrong and so right, Paige’s mom.

Love the shot of seeing Emily’s eyes narrow at that :D And the sweet conversation about coming out after, with the Guys Like Paige theme playing in the background :D :D

When Aria tells the girls she’s been seeing Ezra without telling them, Emily is understanding while Spencer is very betrayed....she did share her vulnerability about Toby under the impression that Aria was going through something similar

Or maybe Spencer was building up to kissing Aria y’know, and this news has really dampened that. Poor Spence.

Even more so when the liars see a vid of Melissa bursting into Alison’s room and suddenly this is what makes them go oh, we should go to the cops now.

Mona shows Hanna a document that appears to be a police report for Hanna’s shoplifting, but the conversation implies there’s a photo? Or something underneath? That is evidence Ashley fucked Wilden to get Hanna out of it? Because otherwise this conversation makes no sense.

That will make no sense in a future discussion about this document where suddenly it’s only a police report.

Spencer drinks a coffee while brooding in the bar and I note Spencer is practicing for her future of drinking alone in bars and then oops, she grabs some shots for herself. 

Garrett has apparently been accompanying Melissa to the doctor, and Wren loves spilling these deets. What medical field at the hospital does this man not cover, and has he ever heard of medical privacy.

“Home is the last place I want to go” Spencer...

Meanwhile, the other three investigate a sketchy looking location that used to house a law firm that Ali received scary texts from. 

I’d completely forgotten this sequence. Hanna simply opens the gate when Aria and Emily are baffled by the locks on one side, Aria gets literally scared off the porch by a squatter, a classic PLL scare.

Spencer is sooo drunk while in Wren’s apartment and while I do find drunk!Spencer charming, it’s soooo bad....mr grown man creeping.

Hanna is currently the liar most invested in investigating, because she wants to minimize the danger to Caleb and/or her mom ASAP, so she googles law firms while Aria tends to her own wounded leg

When Emily mistakes some other black girl at the restaurant for Maya, the girl’s companion is so offended by this mistake, she gives Emily such stank eye that I must share this screencap with all of you

Emily runs into Paige right outside the restaurant and oof, I do not enjoy the things Paige says about Maya here. Much like Maya’s grumbling about swim teammates in the previous episode, I don’t even understand it on a character level, because these characters have never interacted.

One of the podcasts suggested this is the writers setting up the mystery next season, and huh, yeah, it makes sense on that level.

Paige makes it worse by....going for the kiss....oh buddy...

In my notes I wrote “Paige! Bad choices McGee!!” 

Yeah. RIP Paige, please kiss Emily outside of a relationship in more normal circumstances. And if you ever encounter non-normal circumstances with her in the future, please dodge her lips.

Mona turns in her own stolen necklace to save Hanna and Ashley, and I am reminded of Halloween 2008, when Ali nobly goes out to the dangerous hallway to call the cops for the liars

I have grumbled about Ella before, but this right here is where she fucking loses me. Aria throws one (1) tantrum about Ezra moving for a job and Ella acts as if Aria will elope with him right now if she doesn’t Have A Conversation with Ezria

She says she’s not endorsing anything, but her appearance at the apartment is an endorsement. It is like a dark mirror of Pam hosting Emaya dinner 1.0 back when she was still homophobic

Melissa interned at the law firm Ashley used for the divorce, but it’s so goddamn funny to me the way this reveal is phrased implies Ashley chose it specifically because Melissa was interning there???

Okay fine, maybe she asked Veronica for recs and Veronica pointed her there. But I can’t imagine Ashley ever asking the Hastings for anything.

Barry Maples (it’s been so long! We haven’t seen him since Mike was doing B&Es!) shows up to tell Emily that Maya is officially a missing person.

Reminds me of a question I had about Emily’s behaviour this whole episode, because she kept treating Maya not replying to her as like....a ghosting breakup as opposed to a sign that maybe something bad happened to her?

Which yeah, is a very teenage self-centered approach, fair.
