A West Virginia transgender athlete won her shot put competition in her first sporting event following an appeals court ruling that allowed her to participate - as other contestants refused to play against her.

Becky Pepper-Jackson, 13, competed in the Harris County Middle School Track and Field Championship on Thursday, two days after a court ruled West Virginia’s transgender sports ban violates the teen's right under Title IX.

Pepper-Jackson took home first place in the shot put competition with her 32-foot effort, three feet further than second place, and she placed second in discus.

Despite being legally allowed to compete, some athletes protested Pepper-Jackson's participation by refusing to play against her. 

Five girls from Lincoln Middle School stepped up to the circle for their turn, then refused to throw the ball.

In addition to taking puberty blockers and estrogen hormone therapy, Pepper-Jackson has legally changed her name and has a birth certificate listing her as female

Offering the teen a 'choice' between not participating in sports and participating only on boys' teams 'is no real choice at all,' Judge Toby Heytens wrote in the ruling.'

The defendants cannot expect that B.P.J. will countermand her social transition, her medical treatment, and all the work she has done with her schools, teachers, and coaches for nearly half her life by introducing herself to teammates, coaches, and even opponents as a boy,' Heytens wrote.

In a statement, ACLU West Virginia attorney Josh Block deemed the ruling a 'tremendous victory.'Following the decision, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said he was 'deeply disappointed' and vowed to continue fighting to safeguard Title IX.

'The law was passed more than five decades ago and was meant to address sex discrimination in education by ensuring that women had equal opportunities to participate in federally-funded programs.''We must keep working to protect women’s sports so that women’s safety is secured and girls have a truly fair playing field,' Morrisey said on Tuesday. 'We know the law is correct and will use every available tool to defend it.'

In the ruling, the appeals court reaffirmed that government officials had the authority to establish separate sports teams for boys and girls and enforce the line between them.

'We also do not hold that Title IX requires schools to allow every transgender girl to play on girls teams, regardless of whether they have gone through puberty and experienced elevated levels of circulating testosterone,' the court proclaimed.'We hold only that the district court erred in granting these defendants’ motions for summary judgment in this particular case and in failing to grant summary judgment to B.P.J. on her specific Title IX claim.'

In a dissenting opinion, Judge G. Steven Agee wrote the state can separate teams by gender assigned at birth 'without running afoul of either the Equal Protection Clause or Title IX.'

West Virginia is among the 24 states barring transgender women and girls from competing in sports consistent with their gender identity.

Pepper-Jackson told NBC News in October that she would not give up on her fight to compete in girl's sports.

'I want to keep going because this is something I love to do, and I’m not just going to give it up,' she said. 'This is something I truly love, and I’m not going to give up for anything.'

Her mother, Heather Pepper-Jackson, said, 'She likes to do the best in everything, be it algebra or running or shot put or discus.'

'She tries to excel in everything that she does, just like any other kid... if she didn't start the fight, who's going to?'

I love the beta kids, I love programmer humor, I love Sburb, I love poking fun at game mechanics, I love stupid bullshit teenage drama (shut up alpha kids I'm not talking about you), I love self-fulfilling prophecies and bootstrap paradoxes, I love the way seeing an [S] next to an arrow would surprise you, I love clicking on a pesterlog and seeing the scroll bar disintegrate, I fucking love plot beats changing the UI of the website itself I fucking love LUDOOOOO, I love Toby Foxe's music, I love Michael Bowman's music, I love George Buzinkai's music, I love Mark Hadley's music, I love that I could just keep listing off music credits holy shit the talent was crazy, I even love Andrew Hussie's art and writing for like 70% of Homestuck, maybe even 77%. Homestuck may not be PEAK FICTION like Dragon Ball, or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, or Kamen Rider Ryuki, or Godzilla Minus-One, or Limbus Company Canto VI The Heartbreaking, or Halo 2, etc. But I will defend that it is unironically good and I still love it, maybe even the community as well. Full casting has been announced for the RSC’s upcoming production of Twelfth Night, which runs at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 5 December 2024 - 18 January 2025.

Starting with this Latula analysis: -The song GameGlr is a cry for help.

Okay, that might be a bit of an overstatement, but I do have some genuine (somewhat non-professional) notes on GameGlr.

For context, GameGlr is a remix of GameGrl (Original 1993 Mix), where the song Teal Seer is overlaid onto the original song. GameGlr is mixed by Toby (Radiation) Fox, whereas the original GameGrl is by Michael Guy Bowman. Both songs are counterparts to the songs G4M38L0RG and GameBro (Original 1990 Mix).

GameGrl (Original 1993 Mix) is an incredibly fun and not too serious song, though there is a lot of thought put into it. It is intentionally composed to be reminiscent of the somewhat cheesy raps you'd hear in 90's video game advertisements (Bowman actually cites these ones). The result is a song that is itself intentionally cringe-worthy, but genuinely fun and (in my opinion) kind of really catchy because of it.

The artist interview for GameGrl is actually really cool and interesting and you can read it here on the Homestuck Music Wiki, you can tell how much fun they had working on both the song and cover image!

GameGlr on the other hand lacks any notes (that I am aware of) regarding its creation, but you can glean quite a bit just from the song on its own.

Firstly, GameGlr sounds somewhat cluttered in comparison to the original. The added Teal Seer (a theme made for Terezi) is very well-put together, the points where it picks up feel very deliberate. It's composed to evoke the image of Terezi's usual mind player deliberation antics after all. However, the process of speeding it up to overlay it onto the GameGrl lyrics makes it feel a bit more strained. The tone of the 2 different songs does not match up at all and I want to believe this is intentional.

Add to that the increased distortion on some of the lyrics and the addition of the Phoenix Wright "OBJECTION" sample just barely disguised as a part of the instrumental and you wind up with a song that sounds noisy and, especially in the context of the character, like it's barely holding it together. I've seen more than one instance of people saying they had to mute the track in the Openbound because they found it annoying, or distracting while trying to read, which I do want to believe is... also intentional.

And if not intentional, at least pretty fitting.

While you can argue whether or not the song itself is good as a song, it is (in my opinion) a perfect character theme for Latula. The instrumental on its own is one of a competent Mind player, but you're distracted from it by the obnoxious, repetitive lyrics hammering in the same point repeatedly (she's a game girl). It's the theme of a competent Mind player who's been flanderizing her own identity for possibly thousands of years and developed an overbearing, repetitive persona.

Jose Rodrigoalvarguez (Neon Ice Cream Headache) is the funniest Latino character Andrew Hussie wrote. Next to Fiesta Ace Dick.

The Roxy equivalent of Rorb Lalorb is more prettier than Lorb, only if she has less detail. I mean, Rorb doesn't have tufts, and Rosy (as I call her) has tufts, and those tufts are so cute. Either way Andrew is fucking terrible at drawing at the age of 35.

The best composer is Mike Bowman. He's a true chad, his songs are dope.

I have a guilty pleasure for trolls. I think carapacians look a lot nicer.

I think Sweet Bro & Hella Jeff need to continue playing video games, 'cuz that was their main purpose.
