tbh there’s a reason behind all the problematic topics brought up on this blog. rping wasn’t born out of kpop. or real celebrity ppl in general. before then, it was anime characters or OCs without “face claims”. krp grew in the early 2010s when most of us were underage, desperate for romance and had a lot of confusing hormones/emotions. ppl didn’t see idols as humans, more like tv characters (another big rp type then too). I’m sure there’s still teens that get into 18+ krps for the same reason nowadays too but you can’t tell me y’all haven’t noticed most of those rps are filled with ppl almost 30 y/o and full time jobs. the same ppl that helped create what krp is today when they were minors/teens. it’s how a lot of ppl socialized growing up. obviously we all know now it’s weird to be rping real ppl, that’s also why most can’t stand nonau rps. but idk if any of you have tried to rp in other circles (anime, book characters, etc) but it’s a different world. there’s a curated culture in krp that a lot of us have grown up with. I’d love it if the whole community decided to stop using celebrity faces one day but it ain’t happenin. so just don’t fetish, simple. stop caring so much about faces ffs they’re just an aesthetic of a muse, focus on the character a person has created.

as for m/m fetishization… I know I’m not the only trans dude that realized they were trans as a teen by that same medium. but bffr the critique is for y’all writing muses that are basically your cisgender female brain in a male’s body. you’re cis and you like men. you like men that are in touch with their emotions and more feminine than the standard until it comes to smut. you and every other chronically online straight adjacent woman. problem is the same as above, kpop was centered around the idea that idols weren’t humans and the entire structure of it is riddled with gay shipping. krp started with ppl rping their favorite ships exclusively. some of you still are fetishizing two real life ppl that are just coworkers and want to fantasize about them being more for your own emotional/sexual pleasure. some of you might not fetishize ships anymore but still get off on the idea of two men fucking bc you’re insecure about your femininity as a woman in the eyes of men. and some of you are just extra anti women lol. a pussy will not harm you. your muse is not going to be loved any less, be any less creative, or leave you with interactions if they have don’t have a dick. you will not be ignored and given less attention for rping a girl. but you will be ignored for your muses bland personality and character design that you’ve hid behind by signaling to other m/m fetishizers and popular fcs over the years.

I’m all for y’all tackling your issues through rp (trauma, dysphoria, problematic thoughts/interests, etc) but at some point we gotta sit down and say hey y’all cis women have been writing this gay shit for over a decade now, when you gonna ask yourself why? it’s not like trauma rping (for example) is unproblematic, but bro there aren’t entire rps of ppl without trauma rping out trauma-coping muses. there have been more boys only smut rps where 99.9% of muns are all cis women in the past 10 years than there have been m/s krps. come onnnnnn. why are you defending it, I’m sincerely curious. what about writing a/b/o with a straight couple is so unattractive to you?

Would love to hear about all of the ways ppl misunderstand HG (if you feel like it)

i’m doing this as bullets bc i don’t have the oomph to like write it out properly

they think the socioeconomic specialization of the 12(+1) districts is the typical thing of like, “i will construct a wholly implausible society that’s about putting people in totalitarian versions of thinly disguised hogwarts houses so i can show how my heroine is Special and Unique” instead of like, a specifically elaborated form of oppression by the capitol that shows how aestheticized the political economy is. it’s not that most people in panem really believe everyone from District 4 (? IIRC) is suited as a person to fishing, or whatever. it’s that the capitol said “you produce this and only this for us, how much we value that commodity category determines your value, and that is all you are” and this is completely interwoven with the spectacle of control that is the Games. (the Games are basically a dramatization of territorial control but wah wah wah “battle royale ripoff” wah wah shut up.) it’s actually a very interesting political economy concept which i could go on about at length but i value my life

due to the above they think Katniss is supposed to go on the usual character arc of Doesn’t Fit In --> Discontent --> Dismantle the System and Be Happy

this causes them to complain both that she doesn’t change enough (first of all, she does change, just not in the way they expect; and second, the ways she doesn’t change are part of the POINT! this isn’t a story of personal transformation! it’s about political change!) and that she’s too like sad or limp or whatever later on. IT’S A VERY GOOD DEPICTION OF TRAUMA, SHUT UP.

they complain that the ending is “unsatisfying.”

of course the ending is “unsatisfying,” because the political change that occurred is incomplete and nuanced, and also, she still has all that trauma, there is a cost, the whole thematic backbone of the series is “internalize the externalities/make the invisible costs visible.” it’s the interplay between the hypervisibility of spectacle and the extraction of people’s time, bodies, wealth, relationships--their lives--that it both relies on and hides.

relatedly, people think katniss shooting whatsername at the end is some kind of unjustified twist. i don’t know what to say about this. i throw up my hands. WERE YOU PAYING ATTENTION AT ALL.

does anyone think about what the story is actually about? they do not. ("no one” is an exaggeration, i just mean the people i’m mad at)

the love triangle. oh my god. again people just take this as a “typical YA” thing of like, let me show how desirable and special my heroine is by having both the boys want her!! it is not that at all. Gale and Peeta stand in for different sides of her personality and respectively bring those sides out in her. her being torn between them is in fact where the “personal change” aspect of the story happens.

both of them are very strategic thinkers but in entirely different registers, and they value different things. she has much more in common with Gale at the beginning (on the surface), and her choice to see the value in Peeta’s way of thinking and do the very hard work of developing those capacities and responses in herself is her choice about who she wants to be and whether she values a reversal of power (Gale) or actually improving society (Peeta). whether being a ~rebellious hunter~ or being a caretaker (the reason, remember, she did the illegal hunting in the first place!) is more important to her.

they are both from her home district and people she’d known before the games because, again, these are qualities/tendencies she already possessed; choosing which to turn toward and develop in herself is the personal aspect of the political story.

and it is not a coincidence that it’s after the total dissociation and alienation she experiences in being made an aesthetic spectacle qua ~rebel by District 13 that she does the incredibly difficult, steadfast, further-traumatizing work of helping bring Peeta back to himself and so to her. the ending doesn’t happen without her whole process of negotiating her relationships with those two characters.

but these people don’t understand the ending anyway so i don’t know what i was expecting

this is called good writing and it’s an extremely valid way to develop and use supporting characters

Suzanne Collins’ origin story for this series, about channel-flipping between reality TV and coverage of the Iraq War, really just puts it all out there for you and these people ignore this! if they even know about it they just take it as like, “what if i put this thing on this other thing.” but she is getting at something very real with that! she is saying that both war and entertainment are spectacle-generating machines, fueled by inequality and the bodies of young people, that maintain power structures. (the big thing THG is really missing here is how this works internationally because there just aren’t any other countries in its world.)

a few years back i was watching The Voice (leave me alone) and they had this whole ~storyline about a girl (i think 19 tops?) from a tiny, tiny rural Southern town, who was too stage-fright-y to perform to her potential. every week the judges would tell her she disappointed and every week her coach would save her because, he kept saying, he still had faith she could deliver. (she was fine but they had a Narrative to construct.) and then one week magically they changed up her makeup and clothes to make her much more overtly sexy, but in this like fucked-up babydoll innocent way, and lo and behold she discovered her confidence and wowed everyone. who could have predicted!!

I remember another contestant on The Voice who was literally there to try to get to a point where he would be able to get his family back into housing after flooding destroyed their home in i can’t even remember which (socio)natural disaster.

like that is just literally how the hunger games work. the promise is that this is a rare route to economic mobility. it requires a dramatic makeover, patronage, all of it. the makeover involves being essentialized as a citizen-type, a national subject that fits into a particular box (rural/urban, gendered, raced, etc--all of them are just entertaining backstories and narrative handles for the audience). this is a violent process, however visual and symbolic it may be via reality TV. it remains a process on which your odds as a contestant depend completely. and of course no one has heard from either of these people i mentioned since, because there can only be one winner; and even if you win, you can still lose the game of being a winner. no one asks what happens to them when it’s over, much like many people don’t really think about military veterans. if you think about the post-games life of the winners in THG, they are literally what you get if you imagine a military veteran and a D-list celebrity being the same person. reality TV already IS a gladiators’ arena where people ARE fighting for their lives. the violence is just sublimated. like i said. internalize and visibilize the costs.

(there is something here too, in the overlap of spectacle, about how the contemporary US treats its soldiers more as signifiers, high priests of civic nationalism, and/or sin-eaters than as people. similarly reality TV contestants come to stand for certain archetypes of the nation.)

That poor NPC whose family was somehow massacred by nobles “People with crests do whatever they like no one stops them least of all the church”

Mr. Backup died during the timeskip :( But Abysskeeper ends up marrying his older sister in VW and SS

Rodrigue paid for reestablishing the monastery town, even giving money to the ppl in abyss & generally seems to. I guess you see where Dimitri gets that charitable mindset from. Yuri also notes that he’s remarkably uncorruptible. 

Abysskeeper is originally from Derdriu. It#s fun how a lot of his CF and AM dialogue is exactly the same but in different context XD - apart from of course the rodrigue line, and the time Hubert sends a soldier to do some mission there

When you go save Fhirdiad Constance is pretty glad to save the ppl from the school of sorcery and is glad to find them mostly unharmed

Yuri goes into some detail of events right preceding Byleth’s return in AM where the villages near the fronts weren’t sure wether to think of the guy massacring random imperial soldiers as a serial killer or a folk hero

Balthus apparently had a friendly brawl with Dimitri at some point (I guess continuing the tedency of the recruitees in aM to mention having personally interacted with him, at the very least Leonie and Caspar also get lines like that)

Apparently Yuri’s mom got sick sometime during the timeskip (at least in the AM timeline) so he couldn’t evacuate her from Faerghus. 

Constance like Ferdinand, Lorenz & Lysithea is one of those ppl who remember Edelgard in a semi-positive light after her defeat. Kudos to you!

Balthus suspects where Claude ran off to. Well, he was kinda sent there to snoop on him to begin with XD

He never had any hope for the Parlay

Apparently Yuri does have a habit of praying, he’s not like a strooong believer and can’t recite the scriptures much but it’s a habit he picked up from his mom, I guess he would be one of those ‘culturally religious’ people

I just love how Yuri had additional observations on nearly everything like... nothing gets past him. 

Meanwhile in the CF timeline, Balthus apparently thinks Edelgard is hot (which earns him a death glare from Byleth) and thinks the whole Black Eagle strike force should go have a beer to celebrate Byleth’s return since they’re all old enough now and Byleth’s no longer supposed to babysit them

I love how Hubert just flat out takes over Abyss and integrates poor overworked Yuri into his spy networkXD . Hence why Hapi feels he deserves a definite article.  Well, Hubert appreciates how good he is. The mission was to try & convince the Alliance lords to fold so like El & co were actively attempting diplomacy until the end

On CF you see a very omnious NPC who suddenly dissapears if talked to (probably Agarthan) who complains about “that prince being no good” - Did they offer Dimitri their support when they noticed they were definitely losing control of Edelgard? If so he seems to have rebuffed em. It’s a very cryptic line and I can’t rly make heads or tails of it, but, if he wouldn’t sell Rhea out to Edelgard he probably wouldn’t do it for someone even worse no matter what they promised him. 

Apparently in the VW timeline Hapi is a big fan of Judith

Balthus is proud that little Hilda has become an A list schemer

Hearing Claude’s plan makes constance a bit self-conscious about her own being more past-focussed, she’s been out-bolded

Hapi doesn’t know much about Almyra but reflects on how there are many marginalized minority groups in Fodlan including ppl from Isolated communities like her own

Yuri finds the plan a bit lofty & idealistic for his tastes, and also reckless,  but he realizes that he’s got no leg to stand on when it comes to being more noble than he lets on, and that maybe a lil bit of recklessness are what these times need

Oh, once the secret’s out Hapi concludes that there probably would have been war one way or another with the slitherers having everything infiltrated, edelgard or no edelgard

Balthus mentions that Holst wasn’t at Shambhalla because he was “working out things with the Almyrans” and suggest that they warn him about the slitherers lest they sabotage the diplomacy

Apparently Hapi meditates! This comes up cause she trying not to freak out about Nemesis

“People sait it was the church who kept order but actually Yuri’s the one keeping us from complete chaos”

Apparently it was Hapi who kept the surface bandit population from flattening Abyss

Apparently in VW it’s Judith who gave supplies to Abyss (In Rodrigue’s place)

Seems like despite Hapi’s worries they kinda fare best on CF though (”Things have been pretty ok” vs “We lost some ppl”)

Abyss Resident: “I used to be an important person in the church but Im exiled for embezzling. It wasn’t out of greed tho my hometown was pillaged and the church wasn’t putting in enough to rebuild” Tell me again that Rhea cares about the little guy

One of the random rogues from Abyss is from the kingdom, claims to be a distant descendant of Fraldarius the Elite and finds “poetic justice” in taking down the empire under Claude. 

Another reaaaaly juicy tidbit is that rogue with another message from Hubert, telling Byleth to bring Rhea with them when they go to Shambhalla. Ensuing that Rhea and Thales would destroy each other.  And reaaaly adds to my conviction that Edelgard and Hubert basically did everyone a huge solid and no one noticed. Well, actually in Verdant wind they Do notice eventually; Its the left hand fighting the right cause everyone has triust issues galore

I didn’t think my love of Hubert could increase further

I always wondered, hm, were they expecting Rhea to self-destruct? Did Claude deliberately plan for it? But I never had enough evidence. especially for team Empire. But I mean Edelgard started this whole war cause Rhea is a danger so, while I get keeping her alive cause the slitherers want her for experiments, why not slit her throat as soon as the imperial palace is surrounded? Why have Hubert return her alive, to win the other faction’s trust? Not their style.

Though the random rogue also says that “Rhea was kept alive as insurance” against the slitherers. 

So it WAS part of the plan. I always did have that feeling, but, I never knew how to articulate it logically and not just intuitively. 

Of course if Byleth went and told Claude about this, Claude’s decision is also clear because he’s not dumb enough to think the empire would care for Rhea’s wellbeing out of the goodness of their heart

Though ultimately she insists on coming along for her own reasons anyways wether Claude is there or not, for plain ol’ revenge. 

Also while reading through the scrpits I realize that I never clicked the “Do you hope [Rhea] is dead?” option when Claude explains his plan. That actually nets you support points and he’s like... “Daangerous question friend”. Really Claude is not “the chill/nice one” he’s so much more interesting than that and I love him

Also I love how the NPCs get different outfits depending on the route! I wish there had been more route-specific aesthetic touches

hey so I agree with a lot of the stuff in your post about the transphobia involved in the origin of the pansexual label, but I just have one question: what are the actual impacts of people with good intentions calling themselves pan? If you don't hate pansexuals and consider them bi, why type up a paragraphs long manifesto on the harms of the origin of the label if it means the same thing in the way that most non transphobic people (your audience) use it? a lot of identities can be used in transphobic ways (like bi and lesbian and anything really) and plenty of valid identities from problematic roots and evolve over time as people use them differently (queer, transsexual). so how is a person with good intentions using a not-perfect label in a way you don't like a threat to the community? if someone is using the label pan transphobically, wouldn't their bigotry exist independently? if pan people do not act in transphobic ways besides using the label pansexual, realistically what is changing if they call themselves bi beyond holier-than-thou aesthetic activism? plus, a blog on the internet isn't going to get everyone to stop identifying as pansexual, especially considering multiple prominent celebrities ID as pan. so why spend all that energy quibbling on semantics because some bi people use a slightly different word when you could be worrying about Literally anything else? just feels like you want to find something to argue about lol. extremely disappointed that I had to break a mutual

im going to respond to each thing you bring up chronologically- im not trying to nitpick or prioritize certain things you say ill just forget things if i go out of order and i dont want to miss something important. ALSO! i will be typing less formally (like keysmashes and shortening words n stuff) in this response than my og post bc its 1am as im starting to type this so im tired but i want to be clear that i am like. taking this seriously and im not like. mocking u in anyway if it could read that way?? i hope not but just in case anyways here it goes!

in terms of actual impact people with good intentions identifying as pan: honestly im not  sure the full scope of the impact this has, so ill only be speaking to what ive personally seen which might not be all. but like... id argue my younger self has good intentionals iding as pan. i wanted to support trans people, even if i didnt understand a lot of the nuance involved. as a result of this, i developed a sense of superiority over other bisexuals and a mentality that bisexuality was a primitive and lesser sexuality. that mentality is harmful, and although im not sure if it affected bisexuals around me (of which there are many most of my friends are bi ajfjfjf) its still a harmful mentality and can easily hurt people even if i specifically didnt. also using it even with good intentions, which i know many people have, still spreads and further normalizes a label that imo can not be separated from its transphobic origins. this effect is not as extreme as other forms of transphobia and biphobia by A LONG SHOT. the bi community faces a lot of other issues but that doesnt mean this one isnt worth addressing if that makes sense?

if i dont hate pansexuals: ik this is part of a larger point which i will adress but i specified this in my post bc i see a lot of other posts that are negative towards pansexuality have "i hate pan ppl" somewhere in it or a close equivalent. i do not shame these ppl for their anger, i just wanted to be clear i think a lot of pan ppl are bi ppl with good intentions choosing a label they dont fully understand based on a misunderstanding of bisexuality.

basically i think iding with a transphobic label is inherently a singular transphobic action that doesnt make the person transphobic by itself, but is still a transphobic instance.

a lot of identities can be used in transphobic ways like bi, lesbian, etc.: this is true and a point i attempted to make on my original post, but i might not have clear enough. my issue with pan is specifically that it is a transphobic response to a preexisting identity. lesbian isnt an attempted trans inclusive indentity that replaced an identity that already existed (which have many trans ppl identifying with the og label). transphobes can use whatever labels they want, but transphobes using a label vs a label having a transphobic origin is very different. bigots use inclusive and supporting language for their bigotry all the time but language that originated with that bigotry is worse.

many valid identities stem from problemstic origins (like transsexual and queer) but the words evolve: ok my paraphrasing is a little weird there. anyways. the thing here is that. those are slurs. reclaimed slurs that can be empowering to many people, yes, but slurs nonetheless. reclaiming a slur is taking a harmful word and wearing it as a badge of pride. first off, pansexual is not a slur (ur not implying that in anyway just. saying) and it isnt being reclaimed when people dont treat it as having harmful origins. transsexual is the way some people identify but ppl acknowlege its a slur and originates from transphobia. ppl love to act like queer isnt a slur, which is an issue in and of itself, but just. factually it has historically and is currently being used against ppl with the intent to hurt them. pansexual isnt on the same level as these and other words like the f slur, d slur, etc. pansexual originates from trans and biphobia WITHIN the community and not outside of it, and most pansexuals dont see themselves as reclaiming the title because they dont think anythings wrong with it in the first place. and reclaiming it just seems unnecessary considering its history? theres no empowerment from using pan as a label as opposed to queer or transsexual, and it just divides the bisexual community for no reason.

how is a person using a not-perfect label a threat to the community? ok i dont think its a threat but still an issue if that difference makes sense? id like to reiterate a few things ive said before, but for me personally, it made me look down on bisexuals and see them as lesser, and it made people around me see pan as the "trans inclusive" sexuality as opposed to bisexuality, and basically its usage just leads to further biphobia. is this the worst of biphobia? no!!! but its still biphobia and why not attempt to target and minimize that? i have no way to singlehandedly stop biphobia, but my post might get through to my friends who id as pan and that small thing is better than nothing.

if someone used the pan label in a transphobic way, wouldnt that bigotry be different from people using it not transphobically?: someone claiming all bi ppl are transphobic and only pan is the acceptable label is obviously a lot worse than someone iding as pan and saying bi/pan solidarity but again, the second isnt not an issue because the first one is a bigger issue, its just a smaller issue in comparison. i wouldnt say the bigotry is different, one is just worse than the other, but it still has the same problems.

if pan people dont do anything transphobic other than id as pan then what changes with iding as bi over pan other holier-than-thou activism: its just one less person using a transphobic label? which isnt that big but it might lead to their friends stopping iding as pan and cause fewer people around them to see bi as a transphobic identity. which is small scale stuff, i wont try to blow it out of proportion, but thats still a step in the right direction and hopefully more people follow with it. its not terribly huge or lifechanging but something small that may only affect the people close to you is still something rather than nothing.

a blog the internet isnt going to get people to stop iding as pan: oh absolutely not. honestly i expected to get unfollowed/blocked more than change peoples minds regarding the pan label (im surprised i only lost two followers so far honestly) but again, someone literally asked me to do this and i wanted to be clear on my stance on the label, since in the past ive been supportive of it. im not expecting the post to get more than five likes, its more directed to my followers rather than the internet as a whole. im not expecting a large impact, im hoping to change the minds of my followers and friends who id as and support the pan label. thats it. if something bigger comes from it- great! but thats not what im aiming to do.

prev point + many prominent celebrities id as pan: the first name that comes to mind is someone im not a fan of for separate reasons but thats irrelevant. i mean im repeating myself a bit but some celebrities in the past validated and made me feel excited abt my identity as a pan person when they came out, and it justified the label to me, even when i had doubts. i have never interacted with a celebrity and do not plan to change their minds abt their identity. again, my post was for my friends and followers and maybe who ever was scrolling through the biphobia tag and decided to read my post.

why spend that much energy worrying abt the pan label instead of something else: ive spent waaaaay more energy thinking abt a singular meme i didnt like regarding my favourite rwby character so like. maybe i just overreact to things lol. maybe i have a lot of energy and since i cant talk my friends ears off abt my favourite fruits or the different voting methods i learned in my math class or what would dreams taste like, then i gotta put my energy into something. idk. i have a lot of energy and honestly? this didnt take that much. but i felt it weighing on me as my friends talked positively abt the pan label, when i felt guilty for the superiority i felt over my bi friends INCLUDING my best friend and favourite person in the world so like. i spent enough energy worrying abt it, and like. in hindsight since its been over 12 hours since posting it, im thinking abt it less. i was more worried abt feeling dishonest with my friends than actually worrying abt pansexuality, but i figured i owed them an explanation for why my feelings around it had changed.

just feels like you want to find something to argue about: okay i DO love arguing but im not pulling this out of my ass for fun. its in response to posts ive seen on my dash, asks i recieved abt pansexuality, and my way of letting people know my views have changed and why since i know at least some people are curious.

the cake

i wrote a fun lil story about a witch and his boyfriend having some kinky fun and i thought maybe some ppl on here would like it 

plot summary: jacob steals some of a cake artemis made specifically for an event. artemis decides to punish him in a fun and kinky way. magical weight gain, rapid weight gain, general feedism and chubby kink stuff

description of my OCs:

artemis: son of the moon, witch, silver hair, dark brown skin, orange jacket/vibe/aesthetic, long suffering and exhausted but still loves his boy toy, 

jacob: not a witch, dark hair, light tan skin, blue hoodie, feedee, boyfriend, mischievous, just kinda soft, not really chubby yet

In preparation for the fall equinox celebration Artemis crafted one of his infamous spiced pumpkin cakes. He coated the cake in a cream cheese frosting, placed a note card saying “Do Not Eat” on the serving plate, then put it in the fridge to set up before the event tomorrow. 

Artemis was excited to see the other witches of his coven tomorrow and introduce them to Jacob. They had started dating just prior to the Summer Solstice which was too early for him in his own opinion to bring a non-wiccan partner to a celebration like that. But now they had been together for nearly 4 months and Jacob had been introduced to several of his friends, many of whom are witches, so Artemis felt secure bring him along to this celebration.

After cleaning his mess up in the kitchen Artemis returned to his study to keep working on a potion he was excited to try out soon. 

Jacob woke up from his nap due to the smell of freshly baked cake. He stood and swiped his hand through his raven colored hair to try to fix the bedhead he was sporting. He wandered into the kitchen to see if he could steal a taste.

Once he found the pumpkin cake and fully disregarded the card saying “Do Not Eat”, Jacob cut himself a decent slice. After putting the cake back in the fridge as though nothing happened, Jacob sat down on the couch and started to dig in. The cake tasted phenomenal, it was rich and sweet and spiced to perfection. Jacob almost felt guilty for taking it without permission but the taste was worth it.

Once he finished the slice he set the plate on the table and laid back down to continue his nap.

After several hours of working on his potion, Artemis believed he had perfected it. To celebrate he decided to treat himself to one of the sodas in the fridge. When he opened the fridge door he looked at the cake and gasped.

“My gods, did Jacob take a slice? He knows that cake was specially made for tomorrow’s celebration!” He said out loud to the empty kitchen.

Artemis stormed into the living room to see the empty plate on the table and Jacob sleeping on the couch. Artemis nearly boiled over with anger but then looked at how soundly Jacob was sleeping. He looked so soft and harmless curled around his slight tummy and wearing his blue hoodie. An idea came to Artemis, he liked his boyfriend’s softness and he wanted to punish him, maybe Jacob should have his cake and eat it too? 

Artemis retrieved the cake from the fridge and cast a spell over it. He returned to the living room and set the cake on the table. Artemis then gently woke his boyfriend up.

“Wake up darling, I’ve got a surprise for you.”

Jacob groggily stirred, he sat up and pushed his messy, dark hair out of his eyes. He smiled up at Artemis, “Good morning, babe”.

“Honey it’s 6pm. But that’s besides the point, I noticed you took a slice from the cake that I specifically asked you not to eat.”

That was a wake up call to Jacob and the sleep haze that was left in his brain disappeared. “Oh, uh,” he stumbled over his words, “I uh, I’m so sorry babe! I know you told me not to but it just smelled and looked so good I just couldn’t resist. You know how much I love the food you make, I’ve got the belly to prove it,” he smiled, then placed a hand on his soft stomach.

Artemis smiled back at him and said, “Darling, there’s no need to apologize. You’re going to make it up to me by finishing the rest of the cake.”

“But I stole the cake? Why would you reward me with more cake?”

“Oh don’t worry, this will be more a reward for me than you,” Artemis gave him a mischievous grin and then grabbed the fork from Jacob’s discarded plate. Artemis dug into the cake and then brought the fork to Jacob’s mouth.

Jacob tentatively took the bite and the fork from Artemis. He trusted his boyfriend but there was something wicked in his eyes. Jacob figured the silver haired man just wanted Jacob to feel stuffed from eating so much cake and that the tummy ache would be his punishment, maybe make him tired of the taste.

Little did he know that Artemis placed a spell on the cake that would make him grow fatter with every bite.

Jacob dug into the cake and ate bite after bite. After eating about a slice of cake Jacob had gained roughly 50 pounds of pure fat. He didn’t notice as his thighs started to expand, his belly pressed further into his shirt and his jawline softened up considerably. He was getting fat all over. He hoodie struggled to cover his ballooning midsection and was creeping up towards his growing breasts. The button on his pants burst off and his tummy fell forward to cover more of his lap. The seams of his once loose pair of jeans were struggling to hold in his thickening thighs and ass. 

Still enjoying the cake, he kept eating. Artemis had sat down next to him on the couch and watched as Jacob stuffed himself and got fatter with every bite. He was astonished that Jacob hadn’t noticed as his body expanded all over as he ate. How he was oblivious to his legs spreading to accommodate his widening thighs and expanding belly.

Once half the cake was gone Jacob had blown up to over 300 pounds. He took a second to breath and see the damage. When he looked down he was shocked. He was expecting to look bloated but he had no idea he’d be fat!

His belly was hanging all the way out of his hoodie and onto his lap, his thighs had thickened and his jeans were tearing at the seams. He could see his fat spilling out of the sides. His double chin was fully formed and a third was on the way. His arms had grown soft too over the course of eating the cake, they were getting heavier and heavier to lift as he took more bites. Jacob couldn’t see his ass but he could feel that the jeans had ripped up the back. The dark haired man could feel the couch cushions on his now sizable ass.

“Oh, the punishment is that I’m getting fat, I see now.”

Artemis laughed and placed a hand on his boyfriend’s softening body. “Yes, darling. I wanted to show you what happens when you eat like a greedy pig. There are consequences to your actions.”

Artemis started to knead his boyfriend’s fat stomach. He snaked his hand under the hoodie that now acted more like a tight crop top on his breasts and played with his nipples. 

Jacob moaned with pleasure as his boyfriend played with his new found fat. “I’m already massive, how much bigger am I going to get if I eat that whole cake?“ 

“Don’t worry about it, darling,” Artemis said after sucking a hickey onto Jacob’s huge stomach. “Just eat.”

Jacob started back into the cake as Artemis felt up his body. His pants fully broke off of his body and freed his fat thighs after the first few bites. As time went on it got harder and harder for him to reach forward over his belly and get more of the cake. It felt like every bite was adding 10 more pounds to his frame. His arms ached with the effort of lifting the fat that had accumulated there and reach the table to get more cake. His arms and chest got so big that they ripped his hoodie off of his body. Finally he gave up trying to reach, he was out of breath and struggling to move his heavy body. He placed his hands on his stomach and started to rub and feel all of his added weight. Though impractical for daily life, he thought to himself that he could get used to being this size.

“I feel so fat,” Jacob stated while rubbing his big stomach. It was so large that he couldn’t even reach all of it. 

“That’s because you are, darling.”

Artemis took over the rest of the feeding. He stood over him and shoved more and more of the cake into his body.

When there were only a few bites left the couch collapsed under Jacob and he fell to the ground on his massive ass. He fell backwards onto the floor. He attempted to get into a sitting position but the weight of his new fat was too much for his poor weak muscles.

“I’m- ugh uh-” he panted from his place on the floor, “too- fat- to sit up.“ 

"Well then I’ll just have to feed you the last of it down here.” Artemis crouched down to reach Jacob’s mouth and shoved the last remaining bites into his mouth. The last bites added nearly 50 more pounds to his frame. Jacob laid there huffing and puffing, trying to regain his labored breath from the effort of eating and gaining so much. 

“So, have you learned your lesson about stealing food from me?” Artemis asked as he sat down next to Jacob and started rubbing his fat, jiggling body that weighed over 800 pounds and left him immobile. 

“Yes, sir. I learned I should do it more often,” Jacob said, cheekily. “Though I am sorry I stole the cake for your celebration tomorrow, if you magic some of this fat away I can help you make a new one.”

“Very well, I can’t exactly have a blob of fat for a boyfriend now can I? Although, that doesn’t sound too bad. He wouldn’t be able to steal food from the fridge if he can’t reach it,” Artemis said. He stood and then used his powers to shrink Jacob down to nearly his original size and fixed the couch. He left about 20 pounds of the new weight and a few new stretch marks on his frame as a gift to himself (and Jacob, for that matter). “I’ll go grab you some clothes that you haven’t grown out of. Yet.”

DESCENDANTS 3 - REVIEW

WARNING! SPOILERS UNDER THE  CUT, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE!! from this point onwards, reading is on your responsibility. you have been warned.

Alright, Descendants 3, where to begin with this...

First off, thinking that this is Cameron Boyce’s last movie ever, it makes me feel very sentimental and sad and I hope that the movie would’ve done him justice more. But I’m afraid that  while it was a cute and aesthetically pleasing movie, that is about it.

After watching it a couple of times now, I have one word for D3: clusterfuck. I’m not going to lie. D1 was great, D2 was good but D3 wasn’t really the ending this saga deserved. NOW KEEP IN MIND that I haven’t read the books and I personally think that the movie still should take time to explain things. Plus the books came after the first movie anyway so...

In a nutshell, the plot is inconsistent, the movie is rushed and lot of the character development (save from Mal’s and Audrey’s) is pretty much murdered and just ditched away. 

Beginning with a song like (Good to Be Bad) like every Descendant movie, it gives the movie the energy that it lacks towards the end. The VK’s choose Smee’s sons, Celia and Dizzy to come to the Isle and return to Auradon, only to get them after giving them time to pack their things.

Next thing we see, Ben and Mal are getting ready to embark to the Isle with the VK’s. They stop in front of the Beast statue though and Ben sings (short acoustic verse “Did I Mention”) to Mal, then proposing to her. Audrey is not pleased but hey she’s back and damn she’s rocking that hair! 

Now this is where things go a bit off the rails. I understand Audrey still holding resentment to Mal even though at the end of D1 she seemed to be amicable with her so - what’s the dealio Audrey? Of course we can assume that her resentment grew back during D2 - the movie she wasn’t in. Her grandmother is there and basically gives Audrey shit cause she lost Ben to Mal (like wth is it with this hatred from grandma, chill out lady...).

Mal, Ben and VK’s go to the Isle and while they’re leaving back Hades tries to break out and use his ember but Mal fights him (as a dragon) and gets him back inside. In Auradon, Audrey sits in her room and embraces her darkness (”Queen of Mean”, one of the best songs in my opinion, holy shit), stealing the Queen’s crown and Maleficent’s staff turning to Dark!Audrey and suddenly possessing magic and knowing how to use it without any training? Okaaay, shady much? I mean it could be the staff also controlling her so I’ll give the benefit of a doubt here.

Alright so Hades tried to get out, Mal makes the hard decision to shut down the barrier forever with Ben after reasoning with him and feeling guilt for possibly endangering Auradon. Cut to Evie’s little cottage-manor, Audrey pays Mal a visit, cursing her to turn into a hag. That kind of didn’t really serve a purpose in anywhere else than maybe Audrey’s mind if she thought that Ben wouldn’t love her? Idk man. Anyway, Mal can’t reverse the spell because “there’s nothing that can reverse the staff’s spell”. Oh but waaait....

The VK’s decide to get Hades’ ember, going to the Isle and suddenly Mal turns back again because dark magic doesn’t work in the Isle. So... Mal/VK’s just forgot that? I doubt it because they did live there for such a long time. Oh well, moving on. Celia is with them cause she runs errands to Hades. Meanwhile in Auradon, Jane’s having her birthday party and Audrey crashed it, cursing everyone asleep. Except Jane cause she jumps into the Magic Lake - again something that can reverse the staff’s spell that is supposedly non-reversable? Did anyone actually fact-check the script, I wonder... And well - she takes Chad with her. Oh the loyal, dumb puppy.

Alright back to the Isle, Celia gets the key and we meet Dr. Facilier shortly, he’s actually a nice man (oh and btw so was Dizzy’s grandmother aka. Cinderella’s stepmother before too...) which I have kind of hard time imagining BUT nonetheless I kinda like it? They get out and find Harry + Gil and couple other pirates stealing their bikes (same kind Mal took to the Isle in D2) and run after them. Celia and Mal go to Hades’ lair. 

They find Hades napping, but then he wakes up, Celia trying to distract him so Mal can get the ember. But whoops, he grabs Mal’s hand. And then we learn something shocking! (not really) “Hi Dad.” Oh well look at that, Hades is Mal’s dad. Even though I recall that in the first movie it was said to be a human male? But then again, makes sense why Mal has such great magical powers. They argue and get a nice rock’n’roll duet together (”Do What You Gotta Do” and boy I’m fawning over Cheyenne Jackson’s voice!). Celia kinda does background “ooh”s which is... so weird really. Like why?

I’m not gonna lie, I kinda enjoyed the bickering chemistry between Hades and Mal as father and daughter. He clearly cares about her but tells her that her mother was not an easy person to be with and he never stayed in contact with Mal. Now this is about everything that we learn about their relationship. Mal has a certain resenment at him but Celia reveals that Hades being her father explains him asking about her. Mal tells her that Evie is the only one that knows.

Meanwhile in Auradon, Audrey visits Ben making him an offer to make her his queen again but he thinks she’s under a spell and Audrey realises he doesn’t care about her. She uses magic to turn Ben into a Beast and also turns Fairy Godmother running towards the Museum to get her wand into a statue (not shown how she made that happen really... but later on we see that she can apparently see ppl in the staff u know, like a CCTV kinda thing).

VK’s get back to the portal and when they cross over, Harry and Gil do too. They try to stop them and in the midst of it the ember drops to the water (spoiler: if it gets wet, it stops working). Uma catches it and then turns back into human. They strike a deal when Mal makes a promise to let any of the VK’s that want to get out of the Isle, get out. 

So Uma, Harry and Gil are now going to Auradon with the VK’s to help them. Kinda reluctantly. Gil gets all pumped up for fresh food and all which is kinda cute x’D And Harry ofc is trying to steal money from a sleeping student but Jay stops him. Dude is awake though and tells the VK’s what happened. They go to look for Ben and go to his castle, eventually finding the walls clawed and end up in a fight between some armors that Audrey controls (”Night Falls”). 

Eventually they beat Audrey together and almost celebrate. But not quite cause they are enemies. Evie is trying to play the middleman, suggesting an icebreaker game which doesn’t really take off. But props to her for trying. Also I should say that she suggested trying to be friends when they met Uma, Harry and Gil at the entrance to the Isle.

After the fight they split up - the boys go into the woods trying to find Ben while the girls go search Audrey’s room and Uma finds her diary where she mentions the fairie’s cottage. Then the girls go back to Evie’s where they found Smee’s twins and Dizzy sleeping as well as Doug. Evie tries too wake him up but can’t (duh, he’s under a spell). Uma’s all like “he’s under a spell. is she not a fast learner?” and Mal tells her that Evie’s emotionally involved. Which brings us to the ah so sweet - true love’s kiss (”One Kiss”). But Evie is unsure cause they haven’t used the L-word yet. When did Evie become so insecure though? She has been super confident throughout the series even though imho her storyline with Doug has NOT gotten the moment in spotlight it deserves. But wait, she kisses him after the song and he wakes up! Aww so it is true love. Bitches I wanted to see more of them before this bc they’ve been in the background (also can I mention that Doug has turned into like a young Nicholas Cage clone with his long hair and all and dam he’s cute!).

The boys find Ben, now in beast form and trying to kind attack them (and failing adorably) when Carlos calms him down and takes a splinter from his paw (i mean... he has paws now?). Kinda reminds me of Tinkerbell and the Neverbeast when Fawn took a splinter from the Neverbeast’s paw :’D Anyway, back to the story. Then Jane arrives with sort of a hose, getting Ben all wet with the water from the Enchanted Lake and he turns back too human - except he has a little beard/stubble and kind of fangs? Also Carlos and Jane meet again and are all cute together. Harry tries to make a move on Jane but Carlos literally blocks him, lol.

Back to Evie’s. Mal and Uma are talking when suddenly boards start covering the house. Audrey’s magic has gotten stronger cause Mal can’t reverse it alone but when Uma joins in with her shell, they manage to beat it, making Audrey angry. 

They build up a plan and Gil, Doug and Jane go look for the Fairy Godmother while the other’s go to the Fairie’s cottage, finding Chad locked in a closet. They walk out and then comes the moment of truth. Evie tells Ben that Uma + the pirates joined them cause Mal promised that the kids from Isle can come to Auradon. She reveals that she lied to everyone, making her friends mad. Celia takes the Ember, throwing it into a pool of water. Uma and Harry leave. Evie faces Mal, who obviously feels awful and her friends are mad at her. Then poof, they’re turned into stone. Mal sings what is - I assume - the song to build up her confidence/self-searching (”My Once Upon a Time”) and confronts Uma asking for her help to beat Audrey. But Uma turns her down even after she tells her that she saw the good in Uma - that she really cares.

Next we have Celia calling for help cause Audrey has her on top of one of the towers. Mal turns into a dragon, trying to battle Audrey but can’t do it on her own. Uma and Harry happen to come back and Uma’s suddenly like “she can’t do it on her own, i’m here girl, i’m here” forgetting that Mal totally lied to them and kinda screwed them over and helping her igniting the ember again. With the help from the ember, she beats Audrey. Everyone is awakened, except Audrey who’s fading away after being hit back with the magic. Mal can’t wake her up even with the crystal and tells Ben, Beast, Belle and everyone else in the room that Hades could. While they doubt it, Mal tells them that he’d do it - for her, he is her father after all. Ben is a bit shocked but sends guards to get him from the Isle.

He’s brought to the Castle in shackles and he works his magic, waking Audrey up. She apologises to Mal and then Mal apologises to her as well as Ben and then Audrey’s grandma apologises to Mal. It’s an apologyfest, and all is fine again. Yay? Hades is escorted back to the Isle and has a nice little moment with Mal, giving her the ember. Celia, Uma, Harry and Gil also go back to the Isle. Mal and Ben attend their engagement party and she surprisingly declares that she can’t be the Queen of Auradon - she can’t turn her back to the Isle. So in conclusion of a long speech, they open the barrier (even though the Beast is against it but Ben shushes him :D) and Mal becomes the Queen of Auradon and the Isle. (”Break This Down”) The people from the Isle (with Uma’s leading) notice this too and meet some of Auradon’s people halfway and have this big closing number with lost of  dance and singing.

And then people rejoice. Gil and Jay seem to have sparked a friendship. Harry brings comedy to the scene being like “so she’s deeeefinitely taken?” bout Mal, then trying to make a move on Evie and finally Uma who’s not having it. And then Harry ends up dancing with Audrey. Okay, seems legit. Then there’s Hades, being happy for Ben and Mal (and also giving Ben the “i’m watching you eyes”). They dance into  the palace yard (or somewhere) and the scene cuts to the core four, staring at the passageway to the Isle, apparently to go meet their parents (cause they didn’t come to Auradon?) and the end credits roll.

ALRIGHT.

Plotwise yes, it’s a clusterfuck. The whole movie is very rushed, it’s like they tried to include too much things. Like said, at the end of D1, it seemed that Audrey and Mal were somewhat civil, then Audrey was spending some time in the fairies cottage/seven acres woods/something like that in D2 and we didn’t see her at all. Suddenly she’s all hateful and resentful again and her grandmother is being a total jerk to her. Whole turning into evil happened almost right after the movie opened so there was no proper lead to it really. Nothing to explain WHY Audrey went back to resenting Mal and Ben and Auradon.

Then Mal’s father. Alright, pretty much everyone knew by now that Hades was gonna be Mal’s father even though I recall that in the first movie or somewhere else it was said that it was a human male. What happened in their past could’ve and more so SHOULD’VE been dug into a little more cause Mal is resentful at him for not being around - but why wasn’t he around? Why didn’t he call her? After all, he had been asking about her from Celia so obviously he does care for her.

The other VK’s were even more pushed to the side than before. I do get that Mal is kind of the lead here, but they did kind of sideline their character development. The other VK’s were in such minor roles I could easily say that they might as well be taken out altogether. Evie tried to be a peacemaker, she gets a few lines in couple of songs and one song to herself. Her character has also been very confident and craving for love, kind of seducing Doug in the first movie and making him accidentally jealous in D2 and suddenly she’s insecure? Yeah, love can be scary sometimes but of all the characters I just don’t see it characteristic to Evie to suddenly become uncertain of herself in the terms of love. Jay’s more like acting as a guide to good to Gil and Harry for the time being and Carlos is just being his adorable self. Still can’t believe there was no Jarlos kiss! (also he got Jane a pendant saying “Jarlos” as her birthday gift, how adorbs!)

The main problem is that there isn’t really a proper climax in the movie. It starts off god and then falls flat on it’s ass. May I also point out that not ONCE in these movies have Mal and Ben had a duet together - yes they’ve shared songs but also with other people in them - and they are the “true love” couple after all which is a bit disappointing. I mean Ben has been kind of put into thee background in the movies too - and in this last one even more so, whenever the core four have been side to side. But even in the last movie - since they’re engaged after all - I was surprised that when they opened the barrier, Jay was next to Mal (as well as Evie), squishing her hand and her leaning into him. In the end Ben is the king and Mal’s fiancee so in my opinion, he should’ve been next to Mal, not behind her (as much as I do love Mal). And I mean I was also waiting that the other VK’s would’ve met their parents too. But no. Disappointment. 

In a nutshell D3 is a movie about Audrey being a resentful brat and turning dark, introducing Mal’s dad pretty shallowly adding pretty much nothing into her story arc or character development. Except her forgiving her father pretty fast. Too much is trying to be fitted into 1hr45mins. Mal and Hades could’ve had their own movie working it out. Audrey could’ve had a thorough build up to what led her to the dark path.

Aesthetically it’s very pleasing and I enjoyed the music and I do love the cast. The end was kind of bittersweet and the whole movie was a bit unreal once you know that Cameron is no longer with us (rest in peace). So this is and end of and era. Despite this honest and well - unfiltered - review I thank the cast and crew of Descedants  from the bottom of my heart that they have brought these  movies to us.

As someone who's not a part of Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom, i just have to ask about the shipping names. How does one memorise those? Is there a list?? Who came up with them???

There’s a lot of discussion that have been explaining why Yugioh and Pokemon have held onto the [blank]shipping names and while idk how to find them, but the long and short of it is

a) both franchises consist of plenty of characters and spinoff containing even more characters, bc of all those names, just smushing the names together doesn’t always lead to something instantaneously recognizable in English (I believe the Japanese fandom at least does the normal smush together thing at least for Yugioh)

b) in Yugioh you got some characters with basically different forms of themselves and possession and reincarnation stuff muddling the waters

c) being two similar fandoms that both started in the late 90′s/early 2000′s and were more or less in the same circle might have helped it

For example with A5, the protag is Yuya and the lead female is Yuzu, that alone is complicated, but then Yuya has these three other different versions of himself named Yuto, Yugo, and Yuri, just trying to distinguish between say Yuya/Yuzu and Yuto/Yuzu would be difficult but then ppl also ship Yuya/Yuto (tbh in that combination of five characters I think I’ve seen stuff for each one of them, so you can’t just hope one similar sounding ship won’t get popular) so instead of dealing with that mess we have Fruitshipping, Braceletshipping, and Counterpartshipping, which are much easier to distinguish and organize

As for memorizing them, ship names are supposed to make sense for the ship so it is kinda obvious who you are talking about, Fruitshipping is called that bc Yuya is often likened to a tomato and Yuzu’s name roughly translate to citrus, for Braceletshipping, during a lot of Yuzu and Yuto’s interactions, Yuto gets mysteriously teleported away by Yuzu’s bracelet, and then the fandom calls the different Yu boys “counterparts” and so Counterpartshipping is self-explanatory

Of course with thousands of ships (and especially crackships that have less to draw on) sometimes ship names aren’t always intuitive, but honestly just being in the fandom and seeing each piece of Yuya/Yuzu art tagged “fruitshipping” helps drives it into your head, being in fandoms like this with plenty of episodes, characters, and ships kinda trains you to git gud at memorizing shit (at least for me), and if worst comes to worst and you have no idea, ppl are totally fine with clarifying who is who

There have been several ship lists and blogs that go around to varying degrees of success, some ship blogs don’t just act as an encyclopedia but also host polls on when new ships pop up so ppl can vote on a name, however at the end of the day, it is the fan of certain ships that decide it, when one grows more popular, ppl bring their suggestions to the table and the one ppl like the most tends to get picked up by the most and things smoothen out

I have to say though it is really funny bc with one ship though it has a shipping name like the rest, most ppl just smush the names together, technically the ship for the characters Zarc and Ray is called “Genesishipping” since they kinda kickstarted the entire plot, but since it took such a long time for a common shipname to become prominent most ppl simply call them Zarcray (even myself, and I was a big supporter of making genesishipping popular) 

Tbh it can be complicated and prone to drama (plenty of counter-shipnames have sprung up bc certain populations disliked the current name being used) but I’ve grown to embrace the quirk, I think it only works bc only two fandoms use it, but it is a fun part of celebrating a ship and can kinda further the specific aesthetic

Old is the New New

Not really. But the question of how and whether innovation happens in the digital age is a perennial one. I remember a drunken New Year’s Eve conversation a decade or more ago with a friend complaining that there was never going to be another summer of love or punk or acid house revolution, and me saying we’re too ready to pre-empt that in the UK now, but subcultural things like that could very well happen in places like Kinshasa or Kuala Lumpur or Kiev... and indeed music is a part of major cultural shifts around the world. 

Listening to the We Out Here compilation really got me going this year though. It’s so vivid and of the now, without having any of the high-tech signifiers that we of the post-rave generations have come to recognise as representing newness. But in the bodily movements of the players are encoded London life 2018, just as much as they are in drill MCs’ voices or whatever deconstructed club beat patterns are working for people right now. Though that perhaps only makes sense if you understand the soul-jazz continuum as it is woven through London music. Not that you NEED to, mind, because the music operates on an instant, pleasure-principle level too. My full review I wrote for the Wire is above...

...but that review in turn then set off a few tangents, which became a Twitter thread, which I have tidied up as follows:

A short rant on people who use "innovation" as their primary yardstick for judging music. 

If you do this, you are judging music first of all as A Cultural Phenomenon - an abstraction - and sidelining both the sound itself and what it is doing for the real people who love it. If people still love to dance to / make drum'n'bass 20 years on, or deep house 30 years on, or jazz-funk 40 years on, or garage rock 50 years on, or R&B 60 years on, or whatever, and your first response is to accuse them of lack of inspiration, you've gone wrong somewhere. We can't always be in a Cambrian Explosion period like 70s NYC or 90s UK where globally important musical species are created seemingly willy-nilly. Comparing the normal pace of innovation to those explosive times is foolishness. And worse, it denies lasting value to music.

I've been thinking of this wrt the current buzz of what you might call "post-Plastic People jazz" - music which doesn't sound overtly new, but is still vivid with value in the here and now. Thing is, there's always been top parties where you could dance to jazz if you looked. And whether it was 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, that music had the same instant value in the heat of a club, both for its direct effect on the body and from the fact that it tended to attract some of the most diverse crowds: something that always leads to a better party. Does it lose value over the decades, just because it's not the first time it's being played in that style? Christ no. Does sex become less good because you've done it a few times?

The motives of ppl who insist that newer ≡ better are highly suspect & usually proprietorial.

This doesn't mean things don't change. The concept of "timelessness" is metaphysical and equally suspect. OBVIOUSLY dancing to drum'n'bass at 4am in 2018 is different to 1998. But when the beat drops there's real continuity of physical/emotional/social experience. All of this is no shade on innovation, either! Indeed it's rly the "innovation is dead" argument that diminishes real & amazing developments. From Chino Amobi and Elysia Crampton to mainstream hip hop over the last decade to any number of 'developing world' sounds, it's rife. Innovation is vital, we celebrate it, we seek it out. But to use it as your main measure of social and aesthetic value is bullshit.

"Oh nice house you designed and built with your own hands there... BUT DID YOU INVENT THE CONCEPT OF HOUSES, HMMM??"

Aside from sidelining the value of craft, folk art etc in favour of a vision of "inventiveness" that is always tied up in a tangle of sketchy ideas about cultural superiority, it just suggests you're more wrapped up in your own valuations than in the thing you're evaluating. And with huge irony it's often nostalgia-based: people want to see the same kind of innovation that blew them away when they were first launching out on their own voyage of discovery. It's quite egotistical in these cases, it's centring ideas of progress around your own tastes. Tangentially, there’s probably a whole PhD thesis on compering the theory bro’s modernism with the tech bro’s disruption. But more generally, this desperation to repeat a particular type of innovation v often seems like attempt to isolate "modernism" or "innovation" as an essential quality divorced from historical context. And essentialism and ahistoricalism are bad.

NONE of this is to say that retroism, revival, tradition etc etc are worthwhile qualities in and of them selves, of course. You still have to make aesthetic and cultural judgements yourself about what you're hearing and how it's consumed! Being familiar or traditional in itself doesn't make anything good, any more than it makes it bad.

Here’s another thing. Old things can still smash preconceptions. If you’re so jaded you think Sun Ra or Kate Bush or The Butthole Surfers or Coki don’t have something new to say to you, let alone a 15 yr old hearing them for the first time, I feel for you. These things, heard in the right light, can be as modernist as they ever were.

A tangent, on the job of music critics, and how we value the music of the past:

I think we all to one degree or another internalise the notion that popular music is aesthetically "cheap" because of the illusion of infinite availability, as compared to art or "art music". If you watch art/history on BBC4 you see Andrew Graham Dixon or Janina Ramirez waxing lyrical about the qualities of the pieces of art themselves, as expressions of their time. In BBC4 pop music history – unless it's one of those very specialist musicological things with Howard Goodall – it very much tends to be biographical and social history above all else. Can't help feeling that's because there's a reverence for the artworks, that comes from not everyone being able to go to Florence or New York or whatever and see them in the flesh - but everyone can hear "Purple Haze" or "Strings of Life" any time they want, right?

And to my original point about modernism vs retro, I suspect that adds to a cultural forgetting of how radical, say, "Purple Haze" not only was, but STILL IS. Isn't there a value in talking about it not in a Classic Rock way, not in a cultural history way, but in the way we'd talk about a Picasso? "Purple Haze"/"Strings of Life" perhaps are not good examples actually, because they DO at least get the historical reverence treatment on occasion (though this, too, is more based on historical context than aesthetic antalysis). There's thousands upon thousands more records that - if criticism is going to have any purpose - deserve to be looked at, over and over, AS ARTWORKS.

Especially DJing for Big Fish Little Fish parties I listen to & play a lot of what might be called cheesy dance classics, and I continually listen to them closely as a result. The diff between listening hard to Music Sounds Better With You or the Hardfloor mix of Yeke Yeke and just HEARING them as background in a bar or on the radio is like the difference between seeing a Miró or Warhol full sized and up close, and seeing a postcard of one. And actually those records are as great as works of human intellect and instinct as most Great Gallery Art. When you are up close to - in fact INSIDE - those records as they were built to be heard, their sense of balance, scale contrast, movement, balanced chaos/control, etc etc etc is up there with a Kandinsky or Braque. Obviously Capitalism doesn't value it as such, mind... And I think we (critics) unconsciously undervalue that too. So we talk about the past as movements, moments of cultural significance, but all too rarely about how the patterns and tics and structures of X record embody that and what power they still have now. People often talk of the job of critics as just being either explainers, enthusers, conceptualists or a glorified recommendation algorithm. But if the WRITING part of writing about music is ever to have any value, then what about just discussing and bearing witness?

All of which brings us back to the thing about fetishising innovation. We live in a world where thousands or more of people globally are hearing Nu Groove reissues, or rediscovered tapes from Benin, or some twisted Catalan synthpop record from 1981, FOR THE FIRST TIME. While at the same time, in mainstream and underground, soundcloud rapper and Elysia Crampton records are startling and scaring with newness. And elsewhere people – let's take the 100% Silk label or Dekmantel in Amsterdam as prime examples – are maintaining past sounds as living folk traditions. When you hear a set of Robert Hood type minimal techno, even if you don't share his spiritual beliefs and sense of the eternal, you can certainly feel it as being several steps away from the microhistorical cycles of hype. Because of course devotional or ecstatic music is consistently resistant to - or doesn't need - innovation. A shaman chanting in Uruguay, Sufi dancers in Pashtun country, a choir in Hereford Cathedral, Niyabinghi drummers - what do THEY care for the Shock of the New? But from the global 'old' music forms to the crate diggers' early house compilations to the super innovative post-Arca electronicisits, all of these things ARE our present. It's an extraordinary musical-historical moment to be part of. Scary, unpredictable, best of times / worst of times, etc but fucking extraordinary - including the presence of the past, whether unearthed or transmitted through living tradition. We should bear witness to that!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2018? Ooooh that’s a hard one, but I think Redwall by Brian Jacques. It’s one of the first books I bought with my own money, and I adore a lot about his writing in the Redwall series, and reading it now in English for the first time really puts another perspective on certain things. Also it’s great to sometimes just read a book of good vs. evil, with bravery, friendship and heroic deeds written in a fairy tale like language.

2. Favorite performance by your favorite actor? Oh gods am I gonna have to decide a favourite actor now While perhaps not my favourite actor, I’ve always greatly enjoyed seeing David Suchet playing Poirot. The expressions, body language and the way he talks just seem so right for the detective, and I can’t help but love it.

3. One thing you’ve done that you’d like to do again sometime? I would actually really enjoy going shooting with an air rifle again, but this time I’d like to have my music with me, or some podcast. It’s actually quite relaxing and fun to do! That or go to another medieval market where they also have a tournament, it’s so much fun there, and the tournaments (ppl on horseback with medieval armor and weapons) are usually a lot of fun with rock music, funny commentator, people loving what they’re doing, good break entertainment etc etc

4. Worst episode of your fave show? I’m gonna put Firefly as my favourite show here because 1. I like it and 2. not many episodes to choose from. But I think it might be Jaynestown actually, I know people find it funny, but I’m not overly fond of Jayne, and I really don’t like misinformation, so while I do like the song they sing, I’m not comfortable with the way they use that misinformation to their advantage. Also I just get secondhand embarrassment from making a statue, song and celebrating real people like that, I’m not particularly comfortable with that either.

5. Thoughts on the latest movie you saw? Not entirely sure if my latest movie was Black Panther or Mirror Mirror so I’ll do both: Black Panther is one of the best movies I have seen in years and years, the characters were all so unique and memorable, the villain was the best I’ve seen in an action movie, the writing was beautiful, as was the scenery, clothing, makeup, and overall aesthetic. I loved the discussions that come out of this movie, as in what is the right thing to do when it comes to your country’s need vs the world’s need, the difference in worldview and experience for somebody born African and somebody with African-American descent (and how it just takes a step back from having only a North-American point of view regarding everything). And then we have all the character relationships, how natural they feel, and how we finally get a superhero origin movie that does not have to deal with the superhero having to learn responsibility! I mean, thank you gods! The amount of female characters as well, and their individual story arcs! I loved so much about this movie. Mirror Mirror I have to say is one of my favourite screen versions of Snow White. The main character has a very thought-out character arc, the characterisation of the queen feels very refreshing and interesting, and while I think they could have put some more focus on the dwarves (because that is a story very much worth telling), and the prince could have been a bit less of a douche (there was occasional potential, but he felt overall a bit too done-before as a character), it is an interesting re-telling of the story and something you can watch when you just want something to pass the time. I also love the song at the end and you can fight me about this.

6. If you could see any band (past or present) in concert which one would it be? Possibly Panic! at the Disco or Nightwish, both bands have songs well-suited for the stage, and Nightwish is one of the few band concerts I’ve been to before. That being said, I would not say no to a Queen concert.

7. A smell that reminds you of your childhood There’s a library near my mum called Kåken (the Slammer), because they decided to put two smaller libraries together and opened the new building on old prison grounds (I love Gothenburg’s naming sense). It opened when I was about 12 years old, which is around the time I started going to the library by myself to borrow books. The certain smell in their always puts me at ease.

14. if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like?

kellie: i picture something with light wooden floors, white furniture (bc i’m into that Aesthetic u feel) and random succulents around the house LOLchristine: if it’s an old flat, im assuming it has lots of wood textures! so i would want the walls to be white/a light color to contrast w the darker wood hehe. plants!! on the windowsills!! and a few paintings/photo frames for decoration

kellie: okay so this happened just a few months ago;; i was with a friend and ran into a famous Vietnamese celebrity at a dessert place (my parents were going to see his show literally the following night) and i was too shy to ask for a picture EVEN WHEN HE TALKED TO ME, ASKED ME TO TAKE A PICTURE FOR HIM AND HIS FRIENDS, AND ASKED ME IF HE OVERHEARD HIS CONVERSATION ABOUT BADMOUTHING SOMEONE OTL it was Wild… but yeah my friend who was with me brings it up now and then bc of how painfully shy i acted HAHAHA christine: one time i was really frustrated bc the car in front of me was driving slow so i changed into a different lane and then we kind of just had a race?? and now every time instead of saying bye my friend tells me “dont race ppl!”

32. tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it?

kellie: i have this sailor moon plushie i keep on my bedside… i’ve had her since i was probably six years old??? idk if it’s like a rare collectible or not but the doll looks extremely similar to the original character’s art style from the 90′s anime series christine: ive had so many stuffed animals since i was a kid lol and i still have a lot of them. lol the one ive had the longest is this frog plushie that i called Froggie (creative, i know) that was intended to be a phone holder but i used to just play with it a lot

100. if you were presented with two buttons, one that allows you to go 5 years into the past, the other 5 years into the future, which one would you press? why?

kellie: five years ago means that it was 2012 and i was in high school and miserable so it’s meaningless to go five years back :///, i’d go forward to see how i’m doing–what job i have, if i’m financially stable…. Pink team headcanons

Now, for some pink team headcannons! Pink team is lovely team. Octoglasses will be shortened to OG for faster typing. Hope you enjoy! ~the team consists of two pairs of good friends merging into a group of four good friends. They met at a celebration party for the opening of the mahi-mahi resort stage! ~each of these squids have one piercing on them. Aloha has one on his left ear, Straw has a piercing on her tongue, OG has a bellybutton piercing, and scuba with a piercing on one (sometimes both) of his tentacles. It actually looks really cute. ~they joke about sin a lot. Its funny to joke about to all of them. Synergy more like sinergy hahaha bad puns ~ ok but consider: half octo OG. Hiding the features with makeup but she pretty and ye ~strength gauge of pink team, from strongest to weakest: OG, Scuba, Straw, Aloha. They're all more built for agility and stamina stuff anyway tho. Gotta keep the party going and be the first and last on dance floor! ~Aloha is flirty as heck but can be caught off guard as well ~scuba want to swim. In ink? No silly, that's too easy! The challenge is THE WATER! and he dives right in while OG facepalms and counts how many times he respawns. ~they're nice sometimes, but they can be real jerks when they want to be. ~Aloha likes to be honest with good friends, not a fan of keeping secrets. But they together are a group of gossipers, so be careful who you pick to talk to about your problems. ~they know addresses of the people they partied with to not only know where to go when an event happens, but to send a nice care package too if word goes around something depressing/bad happened. ~straw knows the best places for smoothies. OG likes party stuff and knows good companies for party items. Aloha is a good person to go to if something goes bad at a party, he's usually good at settling disputes. Sick of the party and wanna go somewhere else? Cool, scuba will help with transport and hey maybe they get fast food on the way to wherever ~though a big partier, aloha makes the solemn vow to never drink alcohol or allow it at his parties from a smol age. If someone brings it, he's not having any cuz its bad and ruins things. ~straw likes making aesthetic collage posts for her friends and anybody who asks nicely for one ~OG can do tarot card reading stuff. It's just for close friends though. ~ok but srsly Scuba is obsessed with water it's not good for an inkling to be this obsessed with something that can easily kill them and he likes the pirate theme going on at OG’s house ~he literally has a water bed ~aloha’s room is a mix of slight order and slight disaster. Like things he cares about like collections of seashells or bracelets will be in order but then there's piles of clothes here and there and the eldritch demon of mess living under his bed, hiding boxes of stuff long forgotten or purposefully hidden ~straw can be seen taking pictures of literally everything ~aloha is usually first to hear of new trends. He like to keep his team updated on the safe ones. Anything that can be potentially very harmful (he researches aspects of new stuff, what it dies and what it's made from, etc.), he doesn't let them know about. ~love with aloha: he gets extremely attached and wants to be anywhere you are. He's an expert charmer and will share meaningful things and secrets with you, also protecting as hard as he can from people or things he thinks as bad. He'll stay up into late hours talking to the person he likes. It's easy to break his heart due to all this, but why would you wanna see him pained like that? He loves to cuddle and kiss and hear heartbeats and just let him love u ~love with straw: she will make all the things for you. Send them all, every thing is by hand and from scratch. But she also takes the crush to the boardwalk or just to places in general where there's fun to be had, stuff to be tried and she'll just adventure around with u and heck ur now both lost in god knows where time to call scuba or somebody to find her and go back to home ~love with OG: she's very protective. She likes to be close, has a somewhat aggressive flirt style, yet kinda has trouble when it comes to feelings and letting them be known. So basically cuddles while she mutters begrudgingly about how cute u are. Ur dumb but ur cute but srsly if anyone says otherwise she'll fight them ~love with scuba: let me show you the ocean. He’ll sing to u and gently play with hair and he very nice and gentle. He's super chill and knows a lot of nice places to go and show u his colorful sands he keeps in pretty bottles in his room. He'll watch sunset with u and take u on nice long drives. Knows how to keep stuff stress free ~ok but srsly experience tranquility with scuba and he can calm ppl like army and rider down ~they honestly care for all their friends And that's what i got! Enjoy!
