And, at some point, he may be able to shake off all that flailing about to somehow manage to convince the general public that he’s not that bad, and he’ll do so through gratuitous shows of generosity, charity, investing in community (the community he envisions, at any rate; some of you will have to be his diversionary scapegoats, after all), and while everyone is distracted by someone who’s likely to be able to walk into the Ministry and buy them off with false gratitude, making them feel valued, paying them well, displaying what comes off as fairness unless you scratch the surface, he’ll get to work doing what he wanted to do in the first place.

And what does he want to do in the first place? Get himself into a position where he’s well liked, respected, viewed in a positive light, as a good leader, as someone who is successful, committed, has clear goals, and will lead the Ministry to greater things. This is someone who wants to be loved without having to leave himself vulnerable in the process.

For awhile, he’ll get it, and it’ll seem solid.

It won’t last, however, not for long, because that Eight of Swords is going to leave him feeling trapped, restricted, and lashing out at anyone or anything who he even suspects of holding dissenting views through harsh punishments, executions, imprisonments, persecution, “trials” in front of the Wizengamot that were rigged from the start, and at that point he’ll be at two distinct paths he can take.

I do love the Two of Wands for letting things go in different directions.

First potential path: If he goes that route, he’ll be able to leverage what little political and social capital he’ll have left after that mess I just described and, with a little creativity, should be able to pull it all back together in a way that cements his socio-political views as the new, accepted norm and any rebellion against it won’t be able to gain the following it’d need to challenge him for decades to come.

Second potential path: Nine of Swords circles back to the Eight of Swords, only more intense. Terror, not just fear, seeing enemies everywhere, being the subject of gossip, the narrative of which he will not be able to control as it will be a moving and largely invisible target that is perfectly willing to martyr itself if it means his downfall. As a result, he’ll fall further and further into paranoia, nightmares, despair, and stress, leaving him with an inability to cope with the reality of the situation which will only circle back to him lashing out at anything that comes within range, regardless of who or what it is, and when he hits his breaking point he isn’t likely to survive it.

The card between those two paths, as I was curious as to which route the deck thought he’d take, is a reversed Star.

Hopelessness, despair, the inability to take responsibility for one’s actions being what led them to where they are, lack or loss of trust in those around him and in himself, feeling as though everyone, even his closest followers, are plotting against him.

Considering that, I suspect he’ll go the second route to hang out with the sword filled guy in an egg costume.

Let’s see if one overarching card will give some closure here, shall we?

Regret, refusing help from those who legitimately want to give it (back up a bit and re-read the bits that mention paranoia) because, as surprising as it may seem, there are people who genuinely do care for him–in their own, strange way–disillusionment, becoming even more self-absorbed and depressed, focusing on the fantasy in which he’s–apologies, but I’m going to jump back to how two of my former Archivists often described him–seen as something greater in terms of charisma, success, skill, and political success than Grindelwald.

I watched that mess rise to power and fall from it spectacularly, and my memory has more than enough clarity to state with certainty that the only things I’ve seen that Voldemort is better than Grindelwald at are:

1) Keeping himself out of prison.

2) Being ballsy enough to apply for that Defence Against the Dark Arts position looking the way he did when he got that interview. He had to have known what he looked like, unless he doesn’t cast a reflection anymore and nobody told him how off he looked. Just to note, it’s not that I think he’d have been unqualified for the position so much as he may have come off as only wanting it to use as a recruiting platform which is–one of those things you really need to hide until you’ve got tenure, or at least a signed contract.

3) Being repeatedly thwarted by children yet still having followers willing to both overlook it, stand there with a straight face while he probably blames his wand for it (because they all do, you find any Wizard over 60 that has a spell fail and the first thing you get is some variation of, “I swear this has never happened before! It must be the wand acting up!”), and continue to follow him despite the fact that all they’d really have to do is walk away and start telling people what he’s really like and it’d kill any chances of recruiting anything with any skill or ability to follow through.

4) Talking to snakes, allegedly. Not entirely sure how useful that skill would be but I suppose snakes probably have some interesting things to say now and again.

At any rate, Four of Cups almost guarantees he’s going the Nine of Swords route so it’ll get a bit hairy for awhile but whatever grip he gets on anything is going to be tenuous at best and even holding onto it with both hands his reach is likely going to exceed his grasp.

I never like to see raw talent wasted like that, and he does possess a great deal of raw talent as well as the intelligence to have made it, with right people around him, into something spectacular; it’s just been–misapplied and left in the hands of people who never did have his interests at heart, and it’s easy to take advantage of a kid like that. Pity, really.

The Wonders Of Cyclic Existence – Nothing But A False Image

They appeared to have everything that any one of us could ask for, but they chose to end their lives. In a spate of months, the world lost a brilliant celebrity chef, a successful designer and a much sought-after popular musician.

What They Had. Fame, success, riches, just to name a few. Anthony Bourdain, the world famous celebrity chef notoriously known for his daring worldwide explorations into different cultures, cuisines and life, had best-selling books, publications, TV programs and other accolades under his name. Kate Spade, a much-loved designer with extraordinary success in her field, with handbags bearing her name cherished by millions of women around the globe today, earned numerous design awards and even an induction into the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. And Avicii, an international popular musician who was also a DJ, remixer and record producer at the peak of his career, with a net worth of approximately US$85 million, had Grammy awards nominations, music awards, concert tours, top ranking on global charts.

While we cannot say for sure what happened to the mindstates of these well-loved celebrities that we have lost, we are also not in the position to judge their actions. This write-up only serves to remind ourselves – If we are still reeling in shock over the news of the suicides of these successful celebrities just because they are successful, then it proves that we still have the misconception that happiness comes from obtaining the possessions that we want in life.

What Went Wrong At Which Point? We have always been relying on external objects and people that we come in contact with through our five senses to determine our likes and dislikes. We see a pretty doll, we like it, someone gives it to us, we are happy. We smell something’s baking in the kitchen, it’s our favourite cookies, mum gives it to us, we are happy. But what if nobody gives us the pretty doll or mum didn’t bake the cookies for us? We get disappointed. So we have been misguided into thinking that these external objects and people gives us happiness or unhappiness.

“Stricken by the virulent and chronic disease of attachment, hostility and ignorance, we are extremely sick, but we are completely unaware that we are ill.” – Ga-ma-pa, The Great Treatise Of The Stages Of The Path To Enlightenment, Pg 59

If we think that our happiness or unhappiness comes from external things or are caused by other people, then our lives can never be balanced, because it is simply impossible to control them. And our lives becomes complicated when we attempt to change the world according to how we want it to be. We can chase after the possessions that we think will make us happy, but we will never have enough, and so we go on chasing and chasing, thinking that those are things or people that will make us happy. When we get what we want, we get ecstatic with joy; when we don’t, we get disappointed and depressed – our lives have literally became an emotional yo-yo!

And we will never understand that if external objects or people can inherently make us happy, then everyone should be happy in the same way with the same external object. But then why would you like eating sweet desserts, but he doesn’t? Why would she like shopping but I don’t?

Happiness was never an inherent quality of all things external. However if we examine the quality of these external objects closely, we will soon discover that what brings us happiness or pleasure at one time via these external objects is only temporary, and will inevitably bring us displeasure at another time. Eating sweet desserts brings us happiness when we start eating but leads to discomfort when we overeat. Shopping is enjoyable for a certain period of time but tires us out if we do not stop to rest. Thus happiness was never an inherent quality of all things external.

If we could recognize this point, then it becomes clear that we have mistakenly viewed external objects or people as our source of happiness or unhappiness and that we have been attached to this misconception of happiness all this while. We should start to release our clinging to external objects and discover real happiness that comes within us.

Attachment Causes The Problem, Not The Possessions. However that doesn’t mean we give away all our possessions and live in rags. We still need the basic possessions in order to live, but we have to recognize it’s our attachment to the possessions that causes the problem in the first place. So it doesn’t mean we stop eating sweet desserts or stop shopping. We can still go for the sweets, but even if without the sweets, we now have a realistic balanced view of the kind of happiness that it brings and we can refrain from being discontented if we do not have enough or none of the sweets. We can then have a balanced state of mind in which we do not need to grasp at things – “if we can have that object, it’s nice, but if not, we can also be happy” – and in doing so, our minds will be peaceful and free from anxiety.

Bring The Understanding From Our Heads Into Our Hearts. It is the nature of all beings to sought for happiness and we as human beings are much more capable of attaining happiness greater than the temporary happiness from external objects. Buddhism is the only way that directs us towards supreme happiness by transforming our minds, thus it is essential to examine and contemplate in detail the true nature of happiness and what are its causes, so that we can truly accept the method of the transformation of our minds and not just understanding at an intellectual level.

“Due to our lack of understanding, we busy ourselves at length vigorously. After all the busy effort,we end up engaging in an elaboration of words, continuously cycling in cyclic existence. How meaningless! The Dharma taught us very precisely that you have to recognize the keypoint, and then distinguish what to adopt and what to cast aside. So we should cast aside what is detrimental to us and endeavor to do what is beneficial.” – Master Jih Chang

This is long, but I thought I’d post just on the outside chance anybody might find it worth reading. It’s part three of a series of articles I wrote years ago, and it includes information on modern day politicians’ use of political propaganda. I might post the other parts later.

Goebbels and mass mind control: Part Three

How PR opinion-shapers undermine the people's political power

In parts one and two, we compared the methods of Hitler's propagandist, Joseph Goebbels, with the PR techniques of today's corporate spin doctors. We also looked at the ways in which corporate PR spin works against the public interest regarding health care and the environment. Now we'll explore the ways that corporate propaganda undermines the political power of ordinary citizens.

Journalist Frank Rich wrote in a recent New York Times opinion piece that he felt he was living through a Twilight Zone episode when he read the Palm Beach Post's scoop saying that Palm Beach's butterfly ballot cost Al Gore "about 6,600 votes, more than 10 times what he needed to overcome George W. Bush's slim lead in Florida." Rich said the reason it felt as if he had entered the Twilight Zone, was because, beyond Palm Beach, he could find no sign such a thing had happened.

"I turned on my TV," writes Rich, "and had to search to find a mention of the Post's story. It might as well have been a hallucination."

In an article entitled "The Invisible People," (The Progressive, March 2001) June Jordan writes about Election 2000's disenfranchised African-American voters and the corporate-owned news media's neglect of the story. Jordan, a noted author and professor of African-American Studies at the University of California-Berkeley, says, "We have moved from The Invisible Man to The Invisible People. It's a raging and a sorrow at the terrible meaning of that discount - for us, and for democracy itself."

The corporate-owned news media "invents reality," as author and educator Michael Parenti has said, by instructing the American people on which news stories are real, and which facts to ignore. Parenti has also written (Land of Idols, St. Martin's Press, 1994) that our political system can be seen in one of three ways:

1. "A conservative celebration of the wonders of our free-market society, coupled with an insistence that capitalism would be still more wonderful were it not for meddlesome government regulations and the demands of undeserving, low-income people who feed out of the public trough."

2. A liberal complaint about "aberrant problems that remain in an otherwise basically good System."

3. A radical analysis "that sees ecological crisis, military interventions, the national security State, homelessness, poverty, an inequitable tax system, and undemocratic social institutions, such as the corporate-owned media, not as irrational outcomes of a basically rational system, but as rational results of a system whose central goal is the accumulation of wealth and power for the few."

Parenti adds that if you take the radical analysis perspective, you "cross an invisible line and will be labeled in mainstream circles a 'conspiracy theorist.'" He notes that Abraham Lincoln might today be dismissed as a conspiracy theorist, because Lincoln once observed in a speech, "These capitalists generally act harmoniously, and in concert, to fleece the people."

However, Parenti adds that the corporation/ruling class's mode of operation is systemic and institutional rather than conspiratorial. The fact that corporate domination is built into our existing political system, and into many of our institutions, makes it a more daunting problem than a grand and aberrant conspiracy might be.

In a brilliant article for Online Journal (4/24/01), Scott Morschhauser took up the same issue, pointing out that the label "conspiracy theory' is used by those defending corporate interests the same way they use the label 'communist.' If you are successful at pinning a person or idea with a negative label, then the public will ignore the message. It doesn't matter whether or not the label fits. The facts don't matter. All that you have to do is accuse."

When corporate PR teams are able to confuse the public by spinning citizen dissenters as "conspiracy theorists" or as "wacko, tree-hugging environmentalists" or as "extremist fringe," they are able to marginalize activists and dilute their political effectiveness. Journalist Norman Solomon once suggested that rather than succumbing to media manipulation, we can "tune up our personal and collective 'radar screens' to track unidentified flying propaganda."

In False Hope, (Common Courage Press, 1994) Solomon also discusses the subject of public confusion. He writes about the various ways in which corporate PR spin and media "illusion-making" confuse the public. Solomon quotes Anne Wilson Schaef on the results of this kind of confusion:

"First, it keeps us powerless and controllable. No one is more controllable than a confused person; no society is more controllable than a confused society. Politicians know this better than anyone, and that is why they use innuendo, veiled references, and out-and-out lies instead of speaking clearly and truthfully.

"Second, it keeps us ignorant. Professionals give their clients confusing information cloaked in intimidating language that lay-people cannot understand. They preserve their one-up status while preventing us from learning about our own bodies, our legal rights, and our psychology.

"Third, it keeps us from taking responsibility for our own lives. No one expects confused people to own up to the things they think, say, or do . . Fourth, it keeps us busy. When we must spend all our time and energy trying to figure out what is going on, we have none left over for reflecting on the system, challenging it, or exploring alternatives to it."

A confused person will stay stuck within the corporate-dominated system, because creating new options requires mental clarity. Confusion also causes numbness and political passivity.

Frank Rich's "Twilight Zone" experience of the media's ignoring the butterfly ballot story, and June Jordan's sense that African-Americans have become invisible, are normal, healthy responses to the corporate media's lying about reality. When the people see one reality with their own eyes, and simultaneously the corporate media denies that reality, the effect is gas-lighting.

People need truthfulness about politics in order to operate powerfully in the world. Truth is one of psychologist Abraham Maslow's "meta-needs." It has always been a high priority for the world's spiritual and philosophical thinkers. Factual information is a necessary foundation in order for ordinary Americans to set priorities for political action and organize accordingly.

A high priority concern might be weighing corporate interests against the public interest. Another priority might be clearly deciding what our values are. Corporate spokespeople sometimes try to blur the distinction between, for example, good-versus-harmful effects on the environment, or good-versus-harmful health care proposals.

Some corporate spokespeople claim terms such as "good" or "truth" or "justice" can only be vague, misleading "weasel words," despite the fact that philosophers from Aristotle, to the various Enlightenment-era philosophers, to today's best political thinkers have used such terms freely, and have helped clarify their meaning.

For example, the dialogues of Plato explore the meaning of the word "justice." Harvard Professor John Rawls has said, "A just basic structure will be one which produces a proper distribution of prospects of obtaining primary goods, such as income and health care."

How do we define "good" or "harmful" for purposes of the subject at hand? Let's just play with possible working definitions, for the sake of argument. Those options which are "good" could be defined as options that promote health, safety and well-being for the largest number of people, in a kind, egalitarian manner, without discrimination against race, sexual orientation, religion or lack of religion.

Those options which are "harmful" might be defined as ones that destroy health, safety and well-being for large numbers of people in order that corporations can increase their profits, without regard for kindness, egalitarianism, and with (at times) discrimination based on race (as during the Florida election debacle, racial profiling, etc.), sexual orientation, religion or lack of religion.

Are there gray areas within those definitions? Yes. Are there complexities, and is there room for debate? Of course. However, the lines between good and harmful; right and wrong; public health and public detriment are not as blurry as many corporate spokespeople would have us think . . . or, more precisely, would "confuse" us to think.

Thomas Jefferson said repeatedly that democracy could work only if the electorate were "fully informed." He said, "I know of no safe depository of the ultimate power of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome direction, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion."

Thomas Paine, in "The Rights of Man," urged "education for one million and thirty thousand children," saying that "the poor laws, those instruments of civil torture will be superceded" by an informed public given a modicum of "comfortable provision" by government.

Paine also wrote that as a result of a better informed and educated public, and of government's providing some assistance for the poor, "The hearts of the humane will not be shocked by ragged and hungry children, and persons of seventy and eighty years of age begging for bread. The dying poor will not be dragged from place to place to breathe their last . . . The poor as well as the rich, will then be interested in the support of government, and the cause and apprehension of riots and tumults will cease."

Some media propagandists such as Rush Limbaugh and his many clones often say, in their usual Orwellian style, that government assistance for the poor actually hurts the poor. Never mind that the Limbaugh types also generally claim to be of the Judeo-Christian tradition. It's interesting to contrast their "screw-the-poor" comments with those attributed to Christ, such as, "What you do for the least of these, you do for me," or with a typical Hebrew proverb, such as, "When a needy man stands at your door, God stands at his side." And, of course, to corporate mouthpieces such as Limbaugh, agnostic or "pagan" humanists (such as Thomas Paine) who might suggest assisting the poor don't count at all.

Former radio talk show host, Neal Boortz, has said, "That bum sitting on a heating grate, smelling like a wharf, is there by choice. He is there because of the sum total of the choices he has made in his life." ("The Terrible Truth About Liberals," Longstreet Press, 1998.) Boortz implies people are never poor due to being laid off from a job by a corporation that moved offshore in order to pay slave wages; or due to sudden overwhelming medical bills; or, least of all, due to flaws within the corporate-dominated system itself.

Boortz also says this country is a republic rather than a democracy. He claims that the view that this country is meant to be a democracy is an "insidious idea planted by the Left, by liberals anxious to expand the role of government and their own power." Limbaugh often says the same about democracy, and such antidemocratic views have been popular among many right-wing groups in recent years, just they were in Nazi Germany.

The fact is, America is not merely a republic, but a democratic republic. This country has a strong democratic lineage. The above comments by Jefferson and Paine have to do with enhancing American democracy. Activists who worked toward civil rights, women's rights, labor rights and many other social causes, have helped strengthen democracy within the nation.

In parts one and two, we showed that Hitler and his propagandist, Goebbels, worked to dismantle democracy. They accomplished their goal in part by using PR spin, in order to confuse the people and convince them that democracy wasn't good for them. Through propaganda, Goebbels created a national "Twilight Zone," making the Jewish people invisible, marginalizing dissenters and rendering potential activists powerless.

Somehow, it has turned out that corporate America's PR spin has also taken aim against democracy, confused the people, created a national "Twilight Zone," made ordinary Americans (especially Jewish and African-Americans) invisible, marginalized dissenters and rendered potential activists powerless.

Ordinary Americans have been rendered at least so powerless that we have not yet found a way to persuade our elected representatives to enforce laws that would curb corporate excesses when it comes to polluting the environment; to create legislation that would give this country affordable pharmaceutical drugs or a good health care system; or to bring back the Fairness Doctrine or create similar new legislation, so that our nation's news media is not entirely corporate-controlled.

In a Showtime movie aired this week, Varian's War, the lead character (played by William Hurt) helped bring around 2,000 artists and intellectuals to America, to escape the Nazi Holocaust. A character played by the actor Alan Arkin described the Nazis as "destroying everything they do not understand, which is everything that makes life beautiful and sweet and pure."

Corporate polluters, health care opponents, and illusion-makers, probably don't understand that they are contributing to the destruction of (almost) everything that makes life beautiful, sweet and pure. However, it is up to ordinary Americans with clear vision to toss a little light on the subject. In our proposed working definition of "good," working to preserve the beautiful, sweet and pure things in life has to figure in somewhere. It is a better way to spend a life than screwing the poor, plundering the earth and grubbing for corporate profit.

3 Methods of Prayer Make Your Prayers Conform to God’s Will

One day, I sought from one of my friends, who believes in God, about the matter of prayer: “Many times when I pray to God, I cannot see the leadership and guidance of God, nor do I know how to pray in a way that conforms to God’s will.”

Hearing this, my friend earnestly said to me, “I also had a similar situation as you in the past. During that period, no matter how I prayed to God, I couldn’t feel the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. Later, when I sought it from my brothers and sisters on the Internet, Sister Caiying told me the principles of prayer. Then I wrote them down and pondered them carefully, and after praying according to these principles for a while, I obtained God’s leadership.”

Upon hearing that there are principles in praying to the Lord, I felt very fresh and joyful. So I eagerly asked my friend to share them with me.

Prayer is done to understand the truth and attain obedience to God and worship of God. We must not, under any circumstances, engage in religious ceremony.

Very often, we look at prayer as a ceremony, thinking we need to pray regularly every day since we believe in the Lord. Yet because our prayers are aimless and we don’t know why we’re supposed to pray, we are still estranged from God after praying.

God’s words say: “Prayer is not a case of going through the formalities, or following procedure, or reciting the words of God, which is to say, prayer does not mean parroting words and copying others. In prayer, you must give your heart to God, sharing the words in your heart with God so that you may be touched by God. If your prayers are to be effective, then they must be based on your reading of God’s words. Only by praying amid God’s words will you be able to receive more enlightenment and illumination. A true prayer is shown by having a heart that yearns for the requirements made by God, and being willing to fulfill these requirements; you will be able to hate all that God hates, upon the basis of which you will have knowledge, and will know and be clear about the truths explained by God. Having the resolution, and faith, and knowledge, and a path by which to practice after praying—only this is truly praying, and only prayer such as this can be effective.”

This shows that if our prayer is just a case of going through the process, observing rules on the surface, always saying some empty words that are repeated, and mumbling those usual words every day, or imitating others’ manners of prayer, it is not genuine worship of God. God won’t listen to such prayers because we don’t say to Him what is in our heart. This is the prayer that follows religious rituals. Our prayers should be done to understand the truth and attain obedience and worship to God. A true prayer should be centered around how to enter the truth, how to enter into the reality of God’s word, through which we can receive the enlightenment and leadership of the Holy Spirit.

For example, when we read the Lord’s words: “Not every one that said to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21), how should we comprehend this sentence so that we can understand the Lord’s intention? We need to pray and seek the Lord while reading it. After many times of praying and seeking, we will receive the enlightenment and leadership of the Lord, which allows us to understand that this sentence refers to the requirements for entering the heavenly kingdom: Only by following God’s will and His way can we enter. That is to say, in order to enter into the heavenly kingdom, we need to practice God’s word and act in accordance with the requirements of His words, rather than merely work hard for the Lord. After understanding these, we have a new knowledge of the standard for entering the heavenly kingdom, and no longer believe in God according to our conceptions and imaginations. This is the effect of praying amid God’s words and understanding the truth.

We must draw upon our practical difficulties and problems when praying to God. We must not depart from reality and speak empty words, or talk of letters and doctrines.

In our life, we always encounter all kinds of problems and difficulties, which are the opportunities for us to get close to the Lord. In these situations, how should we pray to the Lord? God says: “Prayer is not about how good your words are while you pray, you only need to speak the words of your heart and speak honestly according to your difficulties. Speak from the perspective of being a part of the creation and from the perspective of submission: ‘Oh God, You know that my heart is too hard. Oh God, lead me in this matter; You know I have weaknesses, I am too lacking and am unsuitable for You to use. I am rebellious and interrupt Your work when I do things; my actions do not conform with Your will. I ask You to do Your own work and we will only obey and cooperate….’”

We mankind all like to hear the words that are sweet to the ear. Whereas God doesn’t care if the words of our prayers are beautiful or good, but instead He likes to hear heartfelt and honest things. So, when we are praying we should be frank with God and tell Him our difficulties and practical problems we encounter in our daily lives, rather than leave our problems aside to say a bunch of letters and doctrines and empty words to the Lord.

For example, we have sacrificed and expended in the process of performing service. However, illness suddenly befalls us, and then we complain about God: How come I get sick since I have spent and paid much price for the Lord? At this time, we should quiet ourselves before God and pray to Him like this: “Oh God, I know everything is under Your sovereignty. My illness contains Your kind intention, but I can’t grasp it now. Please lead and enlighten me to understand Your intentions.” Through praying, we will discover: We believe in God only to receive blessings and peace, thinking the Lord should bestow blessings upon us as long as we expend and sacrifice for Him. Therefore, when what we receive are not blessings but illness, we can’t obey God and nurse resentment and resistance in our heart. Only then do we realize that we don’t truly obey or love the Lord, but are instead full of rebelliousness and resistance toward Him, and only then will we confess and repent to the Lord, be willing to give up the intentions of obtaining blessings, and work just for repaying God’s love. These results are achieved by praying and seeking God, and self-reflecting and knowing ourselves.

There must be reverence for God in our prayers, and we must be reasonable. We may not make demands of God, or take advantage of God, much less may we make trades with God.

God says: “Some people take the wrong position when they pray, and regardless of whether it conforms with God’s will or not, they demand God to bestow what they ask for upon them. As a result, the more they pray the duller it becomes. When praying, whatever your heart asks for, desires, and requests, or when you wish to take care of some matters that you don’t fully understand you ask God for wisdom, strength, or enlightenment, you must be reasonable in the way you speak.”

From this passage of God’s words, we understand that we should firstly stand in our place when praying. We are just creatures, so we should stand in our place as created beings and should have reverence for and obedience to God. We should not be unreasonable in the way we speak when we ask God for something, nor should we ask God for something unreasonable, much less make a trade with Him. I think of what was recorded in the Bible: Solomon prayed in quite a reasonable way. He never asked God for blessings or longevity, but only pursued to satisfy God, to manage God’s people well, and to discern true from false righteously. Another example is Job. He followed the way of fearing God and shunning evil throughout his whole life. During that major trial, when he lost all his possessions and children, and his body became covered with sores, he didn’t complain to God, nor did he ask God to help him get his fortune back or cure his illness, but rather constantly prayed and sought God’s intentions. Because he was very reasonable before God and had fear and obedience toward God in his heart, he spoke the classic words: “Jehovah gave, and Jehovah has taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah” and “Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” He offered a beautiful testimony for God. Such prayers conform with God’s will. So we should, like Solomon and Job, fear God when praying no matter what we encounter.

Comparing my prayers with this principle, I realized that they are not reasonable or devout. When I pray to God, I say nothing but lots of demands, such as asking the Lord to bless all of my family members with peace and health, asking Him to bless my family with successful work and an increase in pay, asking Him to bless my child so that he can have good marks in his study and get into college, asking Him to cure illness…. In my prayers, I continuously ask God for blessings and grace without any obedience, so I fail to see His guidance and leadership. Now I realize that such irrational prayers don’t conform to God’s will.

Thanks be to God. It really is because of God’s grace that my friend shared the truth of prayer, which gives me directions and paths of practice in praying to the Lord from now on. I must practice and enter into these principles so that my prayers conform to God’s will and I can have a closer relationship with the Lord. My friend, I do hope you try praying according to these three principles. Doing so, I believe your prayers will surely conform with God’s will as well.

Treatise on the Essentials of Cultivating the Mind

One who comprehends the mind that is the source of all dharmas understands everything. If you can stop generating false thoughts and the illusions of personal possession and completely discard your preoccupation with the body, then you will certainly achieve birthlessness. How inconceivably wonderful!

Make effort! And do not be pretentious! It is difficult to get a chance to hear this essential teaching. Of those who have heard it, not more than one person in a number as great as the sands of the River Ganges is able to practice it. It would be rare for even one person in a million billion eons to practice it to perfection. Calm yourself with care, moderate any sensory activity, and attentively view the mind that is the source of all dharmas. Make it shine distinctly and purely all the time, without ever becoming blank.

Question: What is blankness of mind?

Answer: People who practice mental concentration may inhibit the True Mind within themselves by being dependent on sensory perceptions, coarse states of mind, and restricted breathing. Before achieving mental purity such people may undertake the constant practices of concentrating the mind and viewing the mind. Although they do so during all their activities, they cannot achieve mental clarity and purity, nor illumine that mind which is the source of all dharmas. This is called blankness of mind.

Make effort! The sutra says:

"If sentient beings are not completely sincere about seeking enlightenment, then not even all the Buddhas of the three periods of time will be able to do anything for them, even if those Buddhas are as numerous as the sands of the River Ganges. Sentient beings discern the mind and cross over to the other shore of enlightenment by themselves. The Buddhas cannot make sentient beings cross over to the other shore."

We are drowning in the seas of suffering simply because we are not completely sincere about seeking enlightenment.

Make effort! One cannot know the transgressions of one's past, and repenting now is of no avail. Now, in this very lifetime, you have had an opportunity to hear this teaching. I have related it clearly; it would be well for you to understand what I say. Understand clearly that maintaining awareness of the mind is the highest way.

You may be insincere about seeking the achievement of buddhahood and become receptive to the immearsurable pleasures and benefits that accrue from religious training. You may go so far as to ostentatiously follow worldly customs and crave personal fame and gain.

One can have success with minimal exertion by merely donning tattered robes, eating coarse food, and clearly maintaining awareness of the mind. The unenlightened people of this world do not understand this truth and undergo great anguish in their ignorance. Hoping to achieve emancipation, they cultivate a broad range of superficial types of goodness—only to fall subject to the suffering concomitant with samsara.

One who, in mental clarity, never ceases correct mindfulness while helping sentient beings cross over to the other shore of nirvana is a bodhisattva of great power. I tell you this explicitly: Maintaining awareness of the mind is the ultimate.

To remain unmoved by the blowing of the eight winds of good and ill fortune is to have a truly special mountain of treasure. If you want to realize the fruit of nirvana, then just respond to all the myriad different realms of your conciousness by activating transformations as numerous as the sands of the River Ganges.

One's discrimination of each instant is so skillful it seems to flow. Applying medicine to fit the disease, one is able to stop generating false thoughts and the illusion of personal possession. One who can do this has transcended the world and is truly a person of great stature. Ah, the unrestricted freedom of the Tathagata—how could it ever be exhausted!

Having explained these things, I urge you to complete sincerity: Stop generating false thoughts and the illusion of personal possession!

Question: What do you mean by the "illusion of personal possession?"

Answer: When only slightly superior to someone else in some way, one may think that this superiority is due to one's own achievement. To feel this way is to be sick even while in nirvana. The Nirvana Sutra says: "This is likened to the realm of space, which contains myriad things. Space does not think to itself, "I am doing this." This is a metaphor for the two teachings of eradicating the illness and practicing the concept of extinguishing the illusion of personal possession and the "adamantine samadhi."

Question: Even sincere practitioners who seek a perfect and permanent nirvana may only seek the crude and impermanent standards of goodness and fail to take pleasure in the Ultimate Truth. Such people may try to have their minds operate according to Buddhist doctrines before they have manifested that which is true, permanent, wondrous and good. This leads to the activation of discriminative thinking, which constitutes a defiled state of mind. They may try to fix the mind in the locus of non-being. To do so is to be lodged in the darkness of ignorance and is not in accord with the True Principle.

They may grasp nonsubstantiality in an improper way, without trying to fix the mind on a single object of contemplation according to Buddhist doctrines. They lack the expedient means of meditation and wisdom and cannot clearly and brightly see the Buddha Nature. This is the predicament of religious practitioners such as ourselves. We beseech you to tell us the true teaching by which we can progress toward remainderless nivana!

Answer: When you are completely in possession of the True Mind, the achievement of your ultimate wish is assured.

Gently quiet your mind. I will teach you how to do this once again: Make your body and mind pure and peaceful, without any discriminative thinking at all. Sit properly with the body erect. Regulate the breath and concentrate the mind so it is not within you, not outside of you, and not in any intermediate location. Do this carefully and naturally.

View your own consciousness tranquilly and attentively, so that you can see how it is always moving, like flowing water or a glittering mirage. After you have perceived this consciousness, simply continue to view it gently and naturally, without assuming any fixed position inside or outside of yourself. Do this tranquilly and attentively, until its fluctuations dissolve into peaceful stability. This flowing consciousness will disappear like a gust of wind.

When this flowing consciousness disappears, all one's illusions will disappear along with it, even the extremely subtle illusions of bodhisattvas of the tenth stage. When this consciousness and false cognition of the body have disappeared, one's mind becomes peacefully stable, simple, and pure. I cannot describe it any further. If you want to know more about it, then follow the "Chapter on the Adamantine Body" of the Nirvana Sutra. Think about this carefully, for this is the truth.

Any person who can avoid losing sight of this mind during all his actions and in the face of the five desires and the eight winds of good and ill fortune has established his pure practice, done that which must be done, and will never again be born into the realm of birth and death. The five desires are form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The eight winds are success and failure; defamation and praise; honor and abuse; and suffering and pleasure.

You will achieve success in the cultivation of the path when our practice of correct mindfulness is complete. To never fail in correct mindfulness—even when one's body is being torn apart or at the time of death—is to be a buddha.

My disciples have compiled this treatise from my oral teachings so that the reader may just use his True Mind to grasp the meaning of its words. It is impossible to exhaustively substantiate every detail of teaching such as this. I want everyone to discern their fundamental minds and achieve buddhahood at once. Those who are listening now should make effort, so that you can achieve buddhahood in the future. I now vow to help my followers to cross over to the other shore of nirvana.

The Ten Commandments and God’s Love

Some suggest that the Ten Commandments are harsh and are not really consistent with the message the church should present today. Recently a well-known megachurch personality even delivered an address titled "Thou Shalt Not Obey the Ten Commandments." The thought is that the Commandments and the Old Testament Law in whole comes across as judgmental and unattractive to the people who today's church seeks to attract, and besides, the Beatitudes are really more demanding and more consistent with the message for the current age. We should hold out the Sermon on the Mount and the love of God, not the Old Testament teachings. Yet, throughout the history of the church, pastors and theologians have upheld the Ten Commandments as well as the whole of the moral and civil requirements enumerated in the Old Testament as an expression of God’s character and of His requirements for humanity. The church needs to recover the practice of considering and meditating on the Ten Commandments as we grow in understanding the ramifications of the gospel and pursue the life of Christ has for us. The church needs to present and proclaim the requirements of the moral Law and the Ten Commandments, recognizing that failure to do so is a grievous error. It is not judgmental to recognize the commandments; rather the Ten Commandments and the moral Law are supremely the expression of God's love.

In the first table of the commandments, the people of God were told to rigidly uphold the centrality, primacy, and holiness of God. They were to recognize no false deity, have no idols, reverence the true God supremely, and set aside a day each week to consider and meditate upon Him. The second group of commandments regulates human behavior in family and society. The family unit was to be upheld, parents to be respected. The sanctity of human life was to be observed, with murder prohibited. Honesty and truthfulness were commanded. Private property rights were advanced with the prohibitions against theft and coveting. And the prohibition against adultery regulates sexuality in society and upholds the sanctity of marriage. These principles appear throughout the moral and civil Law in the Old Testament. Further, they are not replaced or repudiated in the New Testament; rather, they are foundational to the principles of the Sermon on the Mount and the way of life exhorted throughout the New Testament.

It is abundantly clear that the Scriptures present the necessity of salvation from sin, salvation not by works or upholding the Law, but by grace and faith. One cannot be saved by the Law, by upholding the Ten Commandments, or for that matter by aspiring to live by the high standards of the Sermon on the Mount. The New Testament, particularly the books of Romans and Galatians (especially chapters 3 and 5), make it absolutely clear that salvation is not obtained by keeping the Old Testament Law, but by grace. And yet, the Law points us to Christ. First Corinthians chapter 6 beginning in verse 9 tells us, "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God." Recognizing their sin, repenting of sin, lost people turn to God by faith in Christ and are saved. That is the only way of salvation.

The Ten Commandments and the Old Testament moral Law demonstrate God's love to us by showing us the folly of sin and rebellion against God, and thus pointing us to the Savior. In so doing, by pointing us to the great atoning acts of Christ, they direct us to the love of God. Even in the Old Testament ceremonial Law, God's plan for redemption through the atoning sacrifice of Christ is demonstrated. Seeing our own sin and unworthiness, we then begin to understand the surpassing greatness of the love of God. Christ paid the penalty for all sins so that God might be merciful to all sinners. On the cross Christ satisfied God's justice. We need not shy away from the Old Testament; we need to embrace it and clearly explain it.

Yet sadly many pastors reference sin (many won't even refer to it as such) as if it’s little more than brokenness, hopelessness, lack of motivation, or an overly negative perspective. While these things show some of the alienating effects of sin, they obscure its real nature and undermine the reality of true guilt before the Lord. It’s the language of postmodern culture but not biblical truth. Unbelievers’ most essential problem is not that they’re ignorant, apathetic, or without purpose or direction, but that they’ve personally, willfully, and happily rebelled against the God who made them. Their real enemy is not merely the challenges and difficulties of life in the world, but themselves and their sin. If this is true—and the Scriptures say that it is—then what unbelievers must concern themselves with is nothing less than escaping the just judgment of God. And yet, many supposedly evangelical churches and leaders tell them to merely affirm the person who stares back at them in the mirror and aspire to be the best person they can be, to look to Jesus as their divine life coach or inspiring cosmic boyfriend. This is nothing less than a redefinition of salvation and of the gospel.

I saw a quote recently that indicated it is a mistake if you think that your "mess-up" is bigger than God's grace. This is a half-truth. Sin is far more than just a "mess-up." As a child, I might have "messed-up" when I carelessly broke my Grandma's favorite vase. I might have felt a bit of remorse, and certainly a little panic. She loved me, and, though a bit miffed, would have forgiven me. But my momentary remorse, and her gracious forgiveness of my mistake, hardly compares to God's grace in the forgiveness of sin. The poverty of spirit Jesus spoke of in the Sermon on the Mount means recognizing how truly deficient we are apart from God. It means seeing ourselves as we really are: spiritually lost, hopeless, and helpless. The "poor in spirit" are people who have recognized their spiritual destitution and their total inability to save themselves and who acknowledge their complete dependence on God. They know their only hope of salvation is to repent and ask for forgiveness. No person can enter the kingdom of God until he or she realizes they are unworthy of that kingdom, until he or she realizes the gravity of their sin. Our sin is not merely a slip-up. The kind of gospel (so popular today) that omits any need for repentance and mourning because of sin is a false, unscriptural gospel--or, as Paul calls it, "a different gospel" (Gal 1:6).

Churches should speak about sin primarily as personal and willful rebellion against God. They should be clear that Jesus died on the cross as a substitute for sinners (Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:2, 4:10), not as a guide, inspiration, or rudder for the rudderless. Jesus didn't come with a controversial, inspiring message and take a risk of rejection that resulted in His martyrdom; He came as the promised sacrifice for sin determined by God before creation and foreshadowed in the Old Testament. Mercy that ignores sin is false mercy; Christ paid the penalty for sins so that He might be merciful to all sinners. On the cross Christ satisfied God's justice. Thus churches should be clear that humans are sinners by nature and by choice, and we need salvation from that reality, and not just salvation from social and indirect problems given to us by others or ourselves. Of course, sin in the world causes bad things to happen to us. It isn't hard to convince someone that they sometimes make mistakes or that they’re a victim of others’ sin or have been materially affected by others’ sin. It doesn't require a work of God to convince people that we live in a flawed world. It doesn't take much effort to convince most people that they have "issues" that need to be addressed in order for them to become happy and successful and have better relationships. But it’s quite difficult, certainly so apart from God’s grace, to convince someone that they themselves are guilty of sin against both God and others.

Scripture reveals an overarching narrative played out in the history of mankind - creation, the fall, redemption, and consummation at the end of the age. God created mankind, and mankind sinned supremely by rebelling against the Creator. Yet the Creator in love chose not to merely destroy creation, but to provide for the salvation of sinners. It is the Law that reveals our sin and leads us to the Saviour. And further the Law reveals for us God's standards both for salvation from sin and the standards by which we should live. Following the commandments of God not only points us to salvation from sin, but regulates human behavior in a positive manner. It is no accident that societies that have engaged in the enlightened fulfillment of the Judeo-Christian ethical standards have been demonstrably more prosperous, just, and free. Individually, following God's wise instruction allows us to escape the consequences that come from choices we later wish we could change and make us freer to enjoy our lives. The high ethical standards of the Ten Commandments make for happier, more fulfilled lives. The traditional family enjoined in the Bible is for the benefit of people, not an impediment to their imagined happiness and pleasure. The standard of one man, one woman for life marriage is a bedrock of western civilization, and the ongoing retreat from that standard is leading to societal disaster.

Regrettably, American evangelicals are sometimes known more for their commitment to public displays of the Ten Commandments than to actually obeying them. But the Ten Commandments are a faithful summary of God’s requirements for humanity. We need to, in love, remind people of this, both lost people and believers. God doesn't want to control us with dos and dont's; rather, His guidelines show that He loves us. Romans 13:8-10 tells us, "Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." This passage doesn't negate the value of the commandments, but tells us that we should observe these principles and present them not in a spirit of judgmentalism or harshness, but with a spirit that shows the love of Christ in us. God does not give us commandments that are arbitrary or simply designed to prevent our enjoyment of life. He loves us. All of God's commands are for His glory and for our good.
