well the second expression is definitely confused but the first one seems pretty scared to me. the only other times i think we see her at all scared are during her argument with ozai when she talks back to him and then immediately remembers that she's talking to her pos mutilation-happy dad, and when she realizes katara is about to beat her (both are a mix of scared and angry, with the former leaning more towards scared and the latter leaning more towards angry imo)

but i think this is the first and possible only time she really looks like she's afraid of specifically her opponent

was fucking around on google images and i ended up stumbling on a reddit post from three yrs ago with a picture of iroh grabbing azula during a fight scene...

this is the only time i can think of when azula seems completely terrified.

he grabs her and she's scared shitless

but he just redirects her lightning and she's just bewildered.

#atla #azulaposting #i don't think azula was scared of katara so much as what katara in that moment represented to her #which was failing her father's expectations #nevermind that her father's expectations were ''my 14yo mentally unstable daughter runs the country''#to be fair to ozai absurd expectations run in the family but he definitely takes it above and beyond #i think katara was the right person to have defeat azula but i do wish there'd been a little more focus on the parallels between them #bc there are a LOT #14yo prodigies with anger issues and an older brother who has an inferiority complex about bending AND a missing mom + absentee dad #except katara's mom was dead and her dad just couldn't be there #whereas azula's mom just didn't care and her dad was physically there but g-d would it have been better if he wasn't #except the one time he decides to NOT be there is literally the worst possible time he could've picked #for azula anyway. worked out great for zuko and katara #azula is startled several times over the course of the series but it's not too big a deal bc startling shit happens a lot in atla #everyone gets one or two wtf moments #but this one leans a little too close to ''suddenly becoming extremely aware of your own mortality'' for me to call it a wtf moment
