i'm hard of hearing and i have an auditory processing disorder, but i don't know sign. so my opinion is definitely of lesser importance than those who are deaf
please pardon any mispellings as i am dyslexic, am writing this on my phone, and am not editing it too seriously
i think it's overall fine to use ASL or SSL in the same way it is fine for one's fantasy world to use English; however, ive learned that's really only the case if a person is fluent in it. you're fluent in English, so it makes sense for you to use English throughout this story; if you are not also fluent in ASL and/or SSL, it is less recommended for you to, utilizing the same aforementioned logic as using English language, use either of these two languages throughout your story from what i have seen from the deaf community. (it might be easier to understand through a hypothetical. it isn't an exact equivalent, of course, but it will help illustrate the point; just indulge me in a suspension of disbelief and "be silly". let's pretend i am writing a story where, for whatever reason, i am using a singular Swedish-only speaking character while everyone else is English-speaking. i know that'd be silly to do pragmatically, but again: "be silly" with me for a second. i have one Swedish-speaking character, everyone else is English-speaking. this would be fine for me to do if i was fluent in both languages, as you are fluent in Swedish and English. however, i am not fluent in Swedish. as a result of this lack of fluency, unless i am actively practicing to learn Swedish, there is going to be a LOT of mistakes in me saying "this is the Swedish equivalent of xyz in English", i am going to get grammar wrong, i am going to miss nuance, and i am going to assume there are Swedish words that might not exist because they exist in English. i may be using an official "Swedish to English" website as reference, but i am going to fuck up so much in my lack of Swedish fluency that for any Swedish-speaker like yourself: you are going to cringe and wish i had became fluent in Swedish before writing this or that i gotten in contact with someone who is fluent in Swedish to correct my mistakes in linguistics, nuances, culture, and whatnot. that's what i mean by "it's fine for you to use English, ASL, or SSL in fantasy if you're fluent!" and why im suggesting thoughtfulness in proceeding if you are NOT fluent. i hope this makes sense lol but yeah! sign language of any kind is, ultimately, a language. so the same respects applies to sign language as to Swedish in this sense when it comes to application of dialogue and the nuances inherent within that language's culture. this is by no means saying "no deaf characters or sign language allowed unless you are in the community!",of course, that'd be as ridiculous as "no Swedish characters allowed unless you are Swedish/have lived in Sweden for x amount of years!". no, of course, do it! inclusivity: yay!! we just have to be proceed thoughtfully when we create a character that represents a specific identity lmao but yeah, to summarize this hypothetical: if you has wanted to do a Swedish-only-speaking character amongst your English speaking cast, you are fluent in both, of course you can do that! but i would need to proceed with caution as a monolingual English-speaker and rely on someone Swedish-speaking checking my work)
and, of course, there are cases of a person not fluent writing a really good story staring a deaf person, like the manga "A Sign Of Affection" by Suu Morishita (which is a duo going under one pseudonym if my memory recollects right); however, they have a consultant named Yuki (who is a deaf person who uses sign in Japan. they also named their female lead after her in thanks lol but for clarity, ill be using "Yuki" to refer to the consultant, not the character) who they interview before every chapter to ensure they are portraying their deaf character realistically, to help them brainstorm future chapter and scenarios, for final approval of past chapters before they finish it up, and will also ask her to translate the dialogue for the deaf characters to say through sign (they film her signing her translation to use as an art reference, and also use her to find out what exactly the characters can say since very few sign-languages have one-to-one translations of a hearing-language. the sentences grammar and the available vocabulary for one's diction are different). you can read more about their process with Yuki within the manga, they explain it as a bonus feature between chapters and have also done interviews for magazines and whatnot. so there is fluency in that example, it just doesn't come from the mangaka duo. if you have a resource to apply that to with ASL or SSL, i think that makes perfect sense to do so! have that person help you out! it is overall preferable to have someone who doesn't know sign try to depict fluency in THAT way, from what i understand after looking into deaf people discuss preferred characterization anyway
if you want to do a conlang for a fictive sign language (especially if you do not have an ASL or SSL fluent deaf person to use as a resource of if you yourself are not fluent in either or), i think that also makes sense. i started learning about how deaf people prefer to be depicted in fantasy works starting at this reddit thread (there's links to further discussion within it, and invitation of where to ask questions). i also like this tiktok user named @/bow_asintakea_rawn who has a lot of deaf content relating to fiction/fantasy that could potentially be a resource (you could even try talking to him if you feel so comfortable). and lastly, i like the youtuber @/oakwyrm, who is a disabled person who does a lot of disabled media analysis (especially fantasy) and whose essays can service as a resource in that way (i forget if oakwyrm is deaf or not though, but he does discuss deafness in some videos despite many deaf people not considering their deafness as a disability, which is fair, and others do, which is also fair). i have other deaf youtubers i could recommend, but none of them interact with fantasy much so i dont know how useful they would be; if you want more deaf resources, i would suggest just googling "deaf youtubers" since i know deafness in respect to "how to portray this community and sign-language in fantasy" is more important to this discussion so i won't detract by offering resources that digress from this topic
i dont know many fantasy pieces that include how to depict deaf people, but i know the overall sentiment about sign language in fiction/fantasy is "Depict signing as functionally the same as speaking" since it is just another language. this sounds counter-productive initially if the idea is new to you, but the idea of novels needing the following reminder makes sense: "There's no need to replace '[deaf character] said' with '[deaf character] signed'. Introduce the deaf character using sign, introduce who knows sign and who needs a translator (if anyone), and from then on carry on using '[deaf character] said' whenever they have something to say. We have grasped from then on that they are using sign. You don't need to make them the odd one out of the group from then on by using a differnt tag just for them. It's alienating. Only use 'signed' as a tag when it's an example where the signing distinction is necessary, like '[hearing character] signed to me not to whisper, his eyes trained on the guard searching for us' or a similar situation" (this is not a quote, otherwise i would cite it. i cant find where i learned this idea from, but i did want to ensure there was a distinction that this was not my idea, but me parroting an idea i have heard and learned from, if nothing else). i mention this to you and your comic because the same logic applies to visual distinctions of signing. from what i have seen: the preferred depiction of sign in graphic novels specifically includes a similar line of logic: "Use the same speech-bubbles as you would use for hearing characters that are not signing", and the idea of "translation boxes" is less preferred unless there is a specific reason why (like maybe a deaf character knows two sign-languages and is switching to one most of the cast doesn't know). though "A Sign Of Affection"'s manga is a great example of deaf characters in manga overall, they unfortunately don't do this (meaning their deaf characters don't use the same speech-bubbles when they sign as when hearing characters are speaking and not using sign), which i personally don't recommend copying unless a deaf person/people who sign DO advise to mimic it. i personally recommend to use the same speech bubbles as hearing characters have when they do not sign, as aforementioned; that's the impression i have been given by those ive listened to in the deaf community. which to do the same speech-bubbles regardless of sign or no sign makes sense, to me, as it better treats sign-language visually as of similar respects as any other language. (but, again: deaf people's opinion over mine. especially if they disagree. i am parroting, what i parrot is biased to what i have seen within my sphere of the internet; i am of far less importance) HOWEVER, something really cool about "A Sign of Affection"'s speech bubbles that the deaf community and hearing community both really like is how "A Sign of Affection" will use speech-bubbles to show what Yuki can/can't hear. they have different text colors to show when their deaf main character hears something being said and when that deaf character does not hear the person (because the hearing character has their lips covered, because the deaf character wasn't looking directly at the hearing person's lips and was not aware they were speaking, because the hearing character spoke literally behind the hearing person's back, and so on). if you want to mimic that aspect, that's totally okay to do so lol and i'm sure there are other graphic novel resources of deaf people to look into, but i haven't encountered many (eg. i know "A Silent Voice" exists but i stay away from stories with suicidal characters due to triggers, so i have no idea if it is reverred as fondly by the deaf community as i know "A Sign Of Affection" is due to my lack of interaction with the content/its fandom)
but i hope this small handful of leads helps you out! if my assumption that you are not CODA or a hearing person fluent in sign is correct (im a newer follower, sorry lol but i do really like your stuff so far and think your "Felt World" comic is fantastic! i just also know very little about you lmao rip), and if you do not have a fluent person in sign to use as a sinilar resource as Yuki is stellarly used in "A Sign Of Affection", i think a conlang is probably the best option for you? i definitely think it might of help to go to some reddit threads with prominent deaf people who use sign to recruit one or a few beta-reader/sensitivity-reader as a resource. bonus if they like conlangs and are willing to help you develop one. or are willing to translate their fluency for you so you know what diction translation is available for your character's dialogue + to film their signs for you to use as a reference. i originally found you through your tiktok, so it might be helpful to formally recruit there through a short video and tag it appropriately to reach out to the deaf and signing community for that type of beta-reader/sensitivity-reader/possible-translator/possible-conlang-help-resource person
my last piece of advice towards finding resources is you might find more information here on tumblr under the tag "writing deaf characters". i think(?) that's the tag people use to discuss how to depict deaf characters, though that is not sign-language specific in the sense of how to depict sign-language in fantasy. you'd probably have to scroll to find posts on that. but it should give you resources of people saying "this is my advice for writing a deaf character as someone who is deaf" who you could then reach out to for more specific questions, resource-help, and whatnot
finally, i know you said "there is *A* deaf character" in your post, but i do want to hesitantly implore you to include that said character as being a part of a deaf community. so having other characters around them also be deaf. it is very unusual, from what i understand, for a deaf character to be the ONLY deaf person they know or that they willingly surround themselves with. the deaf community is very close-knit to the point of people actually all having two names: they have a sign-name as well as their name used in conversation with hearing people. community and solidarity is extremely common with deafness. community is huge part of the deaf culture. being the only deaf character would only make some sense if that character is purposefully alienated from others (think Toph from "Avatar: The Last Airbender"'s family situation, tho she is blind, not deaf) but even then: they had to learn their fluency with sign language from SOMEWHERE and used it often with those people (and this sign language had to get popularized into having a standardization by... like... having a lot of people use it, which would only happen if a lot of people NEEDED it, which means there has to be a significant deaf community lmao). this is especially true if the equivalent-of-face-timing isn't possible in "Felt World" (as video-calls are the predominant form of long-distance communication that accomadates sign); if long-distance communication isn't possible between people who use sign language, they go for proximity (hence there being schools to facilitate deaf community and communication). this can then cause "accents" so to speak (there's even records of families of deaf people having their own family-signs and "accents" in addition to region-based). this is best noticed in how, in the USA, there actually isn't just one form of sign-language originated from here. which, yes, there are multiple "English-associated" sign-languages (i think the most famous trio are ASL, BSL, and SSE to non-Americans?? but there are even more "English-associated" sign languages than that and i'm not talking about any of those rn, but rather the fact that ASL is not the only sign language to originate from the United States of America). i'm talking about how, due to the segregation of Black people in schools, there is BASL (Black American Sign Language). community matters so much to deaf people that something as dividing as segregation resulted in two totally different forms of sign. and even though schools are no longer segregated, that history has lead to two different origins of language that the descendents of which have little to very little overlap now as distinct "accents" from what i understand as someone who uses neither forms of sign (and it should go with saying that many Black deaf people in America have to be fluent in not only English and also ASL, in addition to BASL, in order to gain accommodations in classrooms that are not at a BASL School. it is unfortunate that such a hurdle exists and i greatly admire Black deaf people and their preservation of BASL, as well as anyone hearing who signs BASL to help translate for Black deaf people in their first language so there are less hoops for Black deaf people to jump through. but i digress). so, again, deaf people being surrounded by other deaf people either through technology-that-accomadates-sign or proximity is HUGE. so i would say at MINIMUM introduce this one character as having access to a community of background characters who are also deaf and sign, in addition to hearing people who sign. that insistence you ensure there is a community of deaf characters in this world (if not having multiple deaf recurring characters or main characters) probably goes without saying? i probably didnt need to say all this. but im erring on the side of caution since i feel a bit on thin-ice as a non-sign-language-user speaking here to begin with lol
but yeah! again, i dont know sign so this is me parroting things i have learned from the deaf community about how they prefer sign be utilized (this isn't even approaching the topic of cochlear implants, as that can be seen as controversal to some deaf circles and fine to other deaf circles within the overall community) and giving you the leads i can currently recall having been useful to me when i realized i had a curiosity about how to best utalize sign in fantasy settings (im sure i once used more but i have alas forgotten them, as this post even shows in how i dont remember where to cite certain ideas to). definitely defer to people who know sign, especially those who are deaf, over me as i am not within that portion of the hoh/deaf community as a whole. but i digress. i hope this is helpful, and i wish you and your comic the best of luck! much love ā™”
Ah fuck it this is gonna be a spoiler but I genuinely can't figure out what the right course of action is so here goes...
SO THERE'S A DEAF CHARACTER IN FELT WORLD who uses sign to communicate. (Don't speculate, it'll be revealed, but don't make assumptions just in case it isn't who you thought it was and you end up disappointed)
My question is; do I pick American Sign Language, Swedish Sign Language, or do I make up a fictive Sign Language?
My arguments for all:
ASL: the comic is written in American English
SSL: I'm from Sweden, and there are tons of Swedish references in felt world
Fictive SL: would be much easier from a production stand point
What are y'all's input? I'd love to hear especially if you're deaf/heard of hearing and using sign yourself. Thanks in advance!!
#felt world#me#elviraaxen#deafness#deaf#sign language#conlang#conlangs#writing deaf characters#long post#to be clear: BASL has since mixed with ASL to have overlap. but its origins dont#(at least from what i understand. as usualy: im not an expert)#edit: i woke up in a sweat going WAIT WHAT IF I MISREMEMBERED ''A SIGN OF AFFECTION''S SPEECH BUBBLES AND I DIIIIDDD#THEY DONT USE THE SAME SPEECH BUBBLES WHEN CHARACTERS ARE SIGNING VS WHEN THEY ARE NOT#to be fair tho. their choice does make sense since a large part of the story is about the language barriers of a deaf person who#uses sign falling in love with a hearing person who has never used sign before. so. a visual distinction of that barrier makes sense#buT STILL. I WAS INCORRECT. THE PASSAGE IS NOW EDITED CORRECTLY. IVE HEARD PREFERENCE FOR SAME SPEECH BUBBLES#THE MOST IN MY SPHERE OF THE INTERNET. SO IM STICKING WITH IT. FUCK IM SO GLAD I CAUGHT THAT#anyway deaf people feel free to disagree with the same speech bubble sentiment. idk if what ive heard in a widespread opinion that includes#my sphere of the internet or is JUST my sphere. who knows. im doing my best to give leads; i am no expert lmao rip#also. this whole post makes it seem like i am head over heels in love with A Sign Of Affection lmao and i do LIKE IT but like#gahh i just cabt get over this one scene the male love interest says about romanticizing that ''she has never heard evil'' like. sir. wtf#how infantalizing. bleh. she literally faces discrimination in the same chapter (aka: evils). i hope thats an arc for him and that he gets#a faceful of reality or a smack upside the head like. no. wtf. but otherwise it is a great manga and i do like the male love interest lmao#anyway. CHRONIC MEMORY LOSS + APHANTASIA + A LACK OF VISUAL MEMORY SUCKS. im so glad it finally occurred to me to double-check myself ugh

What actually is your take on sex work and decriminalization and legalization?
not a gotchya, promise! You usually have good takes and I'm curious
Idk!! My overall experience with the topic is that each side makes terrible arguments refusing to address the screamingly obvious actual problems at hand and announces that the other side is full of mentally ill power hungry misogynists
The obvious reason to criminalise purchasing sex is that a) it is a particularly intimate, damaging, and unnecessary form of economic exploitation in ways that are hard to get around by working condition improvements and b) the criminalisation promises to reduce the amount that it actually happens. The big reason not to criminalise purchasing sex is that it makes things harder for those still selling sex who do not really have a choice without giving them improved opportunities elsewhere. How to balance these two out is a largely empirical question idk how to settle without looking a lot more into it
(B) is obviously pretty crucial! If Nordic style criminalisation did not reduce rates of purchasing sex, it would be unambiguously transparently bad. And it does seem to reduce rates of selling sex at least somewhat! The numbers Iā€™ve found comparing Germany to the nordics, for example, give about 10x higher a share of the population involved in SW (tho this is complicated by a high rate of the workers being immigrants largely attracted specifically bc of the lack of legal restrictions on the sex market there). This should be front and centre in pro-Nordic arguments, yet afaict it really isnā€™t: they mostly just hammer home very emphatically that selling sex is generally pretty terrible and degrading and exploitative. You frequently get the sense that reducing the sale of sex weighs less heavily on a lot of their minds than opportunities for punishing johns
This tbf does comport with the fact this side tends to attract some truly repulsive authoritarian bigoted lunatics, including some of the biggest names!
On the other side, I see endless rehashings of basic libertarian arguments against all forms of labour regulation except this time as applied specifically to the sex market and bizarrely juxtaposed with inveighing against the evils of capitalism. It makes perfect sense that those forced to sell prohibited wage labour are often worse off than they would be if purchasing the labour were legalised, since then they would have access to law enforcement and the light of day and vetting mechanisms etc. But, to be completely blunt, prohibiting the purchase of that labour (child labour, for example) is not for those who will sadly and to some extent inevitably slip under the regulations: itā€™s for the ppl spared from the work thru the regulation! Which might seem harsh but itā€™s a lot less harsh than the Dickensian nightmare of working conditions under laissez faire capitalism. This is why it is confused to ask which set of policies is better for sex workers: there are different and differently sized classes of ppl who will be selling sex under the different proposed regimes; you have to take into account those who would be selling sex under full legalisation but arenā€™t under a Nordic style system. Ofc the other part of the libertarian argument here is the fully general ā€œrevealed preference reasons prove itā€™s Pareto inferior and therefore wrong to prohibit [form of trade]ā€ but presumably yk how I feel about that. Maybe there are special reasons to think the argument succeeds in this case where it fails in others! But thatā€™s a mostly empirical question I have not looked enough into
Same goes for personal testimonials about how this or that form of customer service work (or whatever) are worse and more degrading to the speaker than selling sex and they should not be patronisingly forced to accept societyā€™s determination of which is worse: itā€™s just a special case of the general libertarian argument that itā€™s paternalistic and reductive to pick and choose which working conditions are and are not intolerable, these preferences vary by individual and should be settled by the price mechanism, etc etc. Unless there are specific reasons to think this reasoning applies here you should give these the same credence as you do for arbitrary similar ultraliberal antiregulatory arguments
Do not like it when socialists start sounding like antifa!rothbard!! Not at all!!
All of this is complicated by the fact there is a small class of sex workers who benefit straightforwardly from criminalisation of either the selling or purchasing of sex, whose voices you can a priori expect to be more prominent, namely SWers with adequate resources to handle the personal and legal risks of sex work, who for one reason or another are not deterred by the stigma. These sex workers can expect to benefit from the reduced supply, while having the resources to cope with the risk coming from the legal framework suppressing that supply in the first place. Iā€™m not sure how exactly to think about this class of sex workers but itā€™s smth that keeps cropping up anytime I look into the topic in any detail
My instinct in all of this is to say, I need to read more firsthand accounts and academic scholarship and Serious policy research. But like, centering ~lived experience~ is basically impossible without some way of systematising and collating it, which is exactly whatā€™s at issue. And ime academic/policy work tends not to address the stuff that really seems critical to me? Dworkin and mackinnon just read to me most of the time like more eloquent and detailed versions of their (proudly bigoted and statistically indifferent) lesser online imitators, for example
All of which is to say, idk, seems like a really hard question Iā€™m glad my answer is not settling!

Tumblr media
Yoongi walks the pristine halls once he enters the building, it smells like a mix of freshly brewed coffee and sanitizer, his shoes somewhat squeaking on the floor with each step he takes, the starched collar of the white shirt he was practically obliged to dress in has started to itch his skin from not being used to the whole put together look. It had been a few weeks since his father died, nobody really seemed phased by it, being that the man had passed away after a long battle on a hospital bed. No one had cried during the funeral, not even his mother. Truth be told, they were all instructed not to do so, something along the lines of being the most deserving family in the country or some bullshit like that. Of course the man would be missed, not for his grandeur as a human being, but more for the millions he made day by day. And thatā€™s where Yoongi comes in. Dressed up head to toe in a way that he hadnā€™t done ever since his father practically threw him into the streets. As much as he disliked it and had grown out of it, he couldnā€™t help but compromise, eyes on the grand prize: the family fortune.
So what if his siblings and a few cousins would get something out the old manā€™s will too, the Minā€™s fortune, both in money and enterprises, was huge; after his grandfather had passed away, and his father, being the youngest child, absorbed every single part of the fortune as his siblings werenā€™t fitted anymore to run their part, the newest Min generation had turned to resemble a bunch of vultures waiting to feed. So as long as he got his fair share for having to put up with the man for so long, he would be okay with it.
Everybody was already sitting on the large wooden table by the time he arrived, the commissioner signaling for him to take a seat before he began the lecture. An almost three hour long preface that had Yoongi dozing off multiple times, getting a side eye from most of the other people present, before the distribution began. Min Enterprises consultant branch for Daejun, Min Enterprises technology branch for Hadaā€¦ and last but not least, Min Enterprises recreative branch for Yoongi.
ā€œHA! TAKE THAT YOU HOMOPHOBIC FUCK! I KNEW Iā€™D GET SOMETHING!ā€ all eyes turned to him as he stood up from his seat, some shocked at the word choice, although it was no secret he had a rough relationship with his father, most of them just snickering at him, like they knew something he didnā€™t.
And man did they know.
ā€œSo he just had to keep being a homophobe even as heā€™s buried six feet under the ground and give me the dildo factoryā€ Yoongi sighed as he frantically paced around the room
ā€œEhā€ his friend shrugged as he munched on a small bag of pretzels ā€œThe snacks are niceā€
ā€œWhat the fuck am I supposed to know about dildos! I donā€™t have a vagina!ā€ Yoongiā€™s face was redder than ever, throwing a fit on his very first day at the office he inherited just a few days agoā€“ not before going through a lot of papers and signatures and approvalsā€“ and learning that apparently amongst the whole business emporium his family had built, there was a sex toys manufacturer. And his father had decided to be his funny homophobic self even after death, by letting his bisexual son run it.
Namjoon had laughed for a good five minutes on the phone before he decided to come over and help his best friend out of what was surely about to be an existential crisis. Leaning against the couch that was placed on what would now be his office, he added distractedly ā€œYou donā€™t need to have a vagina to use a dildo thoā€
ā€œWell-trueā€ he seemed to ponder it for a while, before shaking himself from the thought ā€œeither way I wouldnā€™t know a thing about itā€
ā€œRemember back in college summer 2013?ā€
Yoongi turned to his friend, stopping dead in his tracks and squinting his infamous cat-like squint at the younger, gritting his teeth ā€œWe DONā€™T talk about summer 2013ā€
Namjoon lets out a whole body laugh at both his friend and the memory, when you make your way into his office in order to deliver some of the papers you needed him to sign ā€œWhat happened in summer 2013?ā€
ā€œWe donā€™t talk about thatā€ you couldnā€™t help but smile at him, grumpily making his way to his desk, rubbing his temples as he let out an exasperated groan. Not everyone really knew a thing or two about the new boss, never been the one to be acquainted with his late fatherā€™s business, or family, for that matter and it really showed, the poor guy didnā€™t even know where to begin with before he was savagely thrown into an already clock-work organisation. People were starting to talk as soon as he set foot inside the building, gossips going around about how he wasnā€™t fitted for the position and how he was the outcast of the family, yet you thought he could use a friendly face if he ultimately decided to take the job. His friend was still absentmindedly laughing before his eyes caught something on his phone screen.
ā€œWell this has being fun, Iā€™m gonna head outā€ he started getting up from the couch before the elder interrupted his wave towards you
ā€œWhat am I supposed to do Namjoon?!ā€
ā€œJust- give me a call once you figure out if you get an employeeā€™s discount, okay?ā€
ā€œWha-ā€ Yoongi was quick to throw a pen that had been lying on top of his desk at his retrieving friend, the object falling to the ground as it hit the doorframe, completely missing the other man, whose laugh could still be heard as he walked away.
He slumped against his desk chair once again, eyeing the stack of documents you had brought in for a brief moment before groaning and hanging his head low. There were a lot of rumours going around, with the Min family being as successful as they were, and although you had decided not to trust them, you couldnā€™t help but feel your heart ache if what people said about Min Yoongi were true. A prodigal son fallen from his fatherā€™s grace, truly one ā€“if not the mostā€“ prepared person out of the whole family, with a lot of curriculum to back him up, everyone rooting for him to be the head of the whole Min emporium, only to be casted away in a rush of headlines, front pages of magazines and online bashing as he was seen leaving a bar that was known to be one of the few LGBTQIA+ friendly ones around and it all went downhill from there, never to be seen around his own family again except for the big events and now, here.ā€I could help you figure out your way around if youā€™d likeā€
He didnā€™t even bother to turn your way when he answered ā€œI donā€™t even know where to beginā€
ā€œThatā€™s alright, come onā€ you tapped his arm in an attempt to have him follow you outside. Although the methods seemed quite unorthodox for an enterprise carrying the Minā€™s family name, Yoongi didnā€™t seem the type to take offence on a lack of traditional manners, plus, the whole workplace had always been quite different from the rest of the Enterprises. ā€œMy nameā€™s Y/N, Iā€™m the head director of a sister brand, so youā€™ll be seeing a lot of me aroundā€
ā€œSoā€¦ā€ he turned to face you as you two made your way out of his office ā€œdildos?ā€
ā€œKinda- we run the LGBTQIA+ focused brandā€ he almost missed a step as soon as the words were processed inside his mind and you couldnā€™t help but smile at him
ā€œI never knew my father had an inclusive line in his businessā€
ā€œOh he didnā€™tā€ you couldnā€™t help but find it cute when he made a confused gesture with his face as you both stopped at one of the doors that led to the designing part of the building ā€œYou see, we tend to do things differently around here, and thereā€™s a lot of space to work withā€
The room is, admittedly, not at all what Yoongi had expected it to be ā€“not like he had a precise image in mind about a dildo manufacturer. But the room he was brought in was almost surgical, men and women alike are all dressed up with white laboratory coats and all, one of them approaching both of you with a smile on his face.
ā€œY/N! What brings you here? Itā€™s been a while since weā€™ve seen you!ā€ Yoongi canā€™t help but steal a glance at your smile, the heavy air that he was accustomed to feel every time he came close to one of his familyā€™s business nowhere to be found, the whole room was breathable enough.
ā€œWorkā€™s keeping me busy, anyway, this is Min Yoongi, heā€™s taking overā€ for a second Yoongi felt like suffocating, you having to introduce him as if he wasnā€™t quite literally your boss, as if he was a new employee ā€œIā€™m showing him around, see how he finds the placeā€
ā€œOh the infamous Min Yoongiā€ and he could feel his heart race- even in such a place, only god knows how much of his family disaster the people could hear of, the flashbacks to being outcasted and laughed at for his downfall all coming back to him ā€œItā€™s nice to have you man, Iā€™m Hoseokā€
You turned his way and smiled at him, in an attempt to let him know that it was fine. There really wasnā€™t much to fear inside the buildingā€“ except for when they had to deal with executive meetingsā€“ things were different around here. Yoongiā€™s gaze seemed to fixate on one of the computers where another man in a white coat was sitting, albeit still quite awkward, he approached him ā€œIs there a program for that?ā€
The guy, one of your best designers ever since he joined an internship a few years back, Jungkook, turned to look at Yoongi with wide eyes and sort of shy at the stranger ā€œOh yeahā€ when Yoongi didnā€™t seem to break out of his fascination on watching a 3D modelling program run with a sculptured cock being designed on it he added with a small chuckle ā€œDrawing penises by hand only gets you so farā€
He watches you chat away with both men and canā€™t help but feel at peace, as weird as the thought of it could be. Min Yoongi, with a MBA and a Business Administration Doctorate, feels at peace in a dildo factory. But the teamwork seems like something he had never seen before, the line of production is almost text-book like. He canā€™t help but wonder, even if headless, things seem to run smoothly, where exactly does he fit in? ā€œSo what exactly am I supposed to do in a dildo factory?ā€
You laugh at his choice of words, before Hoseok steps in somewhat offended by them ā€œWe donā€™t just make dildosā€ and although it didnā€™t help his case, he throws one squiggly silicone penis his way, to which he has no other option but catch ā€œWe are in charge of designing, planning and manufacturing recreational tools in aid for peopleā€™s mental health, self indulgence and lifestyleā€ he then loses his whole offended facade as he takes a small ring between his fingers and shrugs before smiling brightly ā€œAt least that what we tell the big bossā€
The younger man in a white coat speaks up from his place in front of the computer ā€œExcept heā€™s now the big bossā€
Hoseokā€™s eyes grow as wide as saucers as he realises ā€œOh god did I fucked up?ā€ You canā€™t stop yourself from smiling at his antiques, hand coming up to shut his mouth as he realises his slip in vocabulary ā€œOh shitā€ Jungkook rolls his eyes at him before returning to his work and Yoongi canā€™t help but feel endeared as the whole scene develops ā€œSorry bossā€
Gratefully, you step to his side, waving a goodbye to both of them, Hoseok returning it with a smile and a bow towards him, and he realises his question still hasnā€™t been answered ā€œSo really, where am I supposed to fit in?ā€
You seem to ponder the question before responding ā€œYou could take over the white collar meetings, we all hate themā€ Yoongi groans at that ā€œorā€ you take the silicone penis from him with a mischievous smile on your face as you shake it around on his face ā€œyou could be Jungkookā€™s test subjectā€
ā€œI-no. Despite what you heard from Namjoon I donā€™t- Iā€ your body almost doubled over in laughter at the face he pulled, an honest horror face and hey, the man is quite attractive, that much could be seen from miles away, and it had been a few too many months since the last time you got laid, technically he wasnā€™t even your boss, as you held the same position for a different product line.
ā€œEh- you could always try them on meā€ Yoongiā€™s eyes widened in surprise before they took on something darker in them, almost amused at your advances ā€œ...if you let me try my products on youā€
ā€œDealā€
Tumblr media
ā€œHyung what the fuckā€
Yoongi started playing with a stress ball you had given him the day before after all introductions and tours were said and done, and now of course, after texting in the groupchat at night, both Namjoon and Seokjin wanted to hear all about what Jin namedā€“ very proudlyā€“ the deal-do ā€œWhat could be worse than dildos?ā€
ā€œStrap ons?ā€
Seokjin placed a hand on Yoongiā€™s back and sighed, already knowing the answer yet forcing himself to ask ā€œDid you even read the papers you signed? The product lines of your company?ā€
ā€œOhā€
ā€œSo youā€™re not going to keep the whole Min Yoongi doesnā€™t bottom facade any more?ā€ Namjoon asked, knowing that although it was quite fun to watch the whole scenario unfold, his friend was the one going through it all
ā€œI donā€™t bottom, thatā€™s a factā€
ā€œHello boys, having fun on company time?ā€ you crossed the door to his office the way you did the day before, dropping on top of his desk a stack of documents, only now noticing a new face on the couch, turning to greet him as he does the same before standing up, signalling Yoongiā€™s other friend, Namjoon to do the same.
ā€œWell Yoongi-ah, this has been nice and all but it looks like youā€™ve got work to doā€ although he was trying to keep a straight face, the snickering of both men could be heard as they left the room. Yoongi really has to tell them that the walls are paper thin.
ā€œSoā€¦ā€
ā€œSoā€¦ā€
ā€œWas the whole deal thing a thing? or should I just pretend it never happened and get stuck on reviewing whatever papers Iā€™m supposed to review?ā€ A short laugh escaped your lips as you looked at him, still kinda awkward about the whole ordeal.
ā€œOh it is a thingā€ you grabbed one of the folders on top of the stack, pressing the paper against him ā€œWe like to be very particular on our qualityā€
His eyes travelled along his feet for a few seconds, no word spoken about it.
ā€œYoongi, you do know you can say no right?ā€ it was something you should have addressed way earlier, knowing beforehand that the work ethics around branched out into almost non existent territory, and the man was fresh out of a big family outcasting, getting thrown back in it to take over the least coordinated side of the enterprise ā€œLook, I wonā€™t lie, thereā€™s a lot of talk going around, but you seem like a nice man, and I find you very attractive, you came in here as the boss and I was trying to get you entertained with the whole dildo factory idea, I know it must have been tough being designated here, especially since we tend to be...a little too much to handle, so just know that you can opt out of this one, I can just get Jungkook and his girlfriend to try these ones out, as they always haveā€
ā€œThatā€™s- thatā€™s a lot to processā€
ā€œThen take your time and let me know okay? just thought you could have a nice laugh at the whole situationā€
Tumblr media
It took Yoongi three days and a half to get back to you on the offer, three days and a half in which, although he wouldnā€™t admit to it, you had wormed your way into his heart, having you deliver documents each morning, bantering along with his friends before you had to go back to whatever it is that you did around the company. You had also started to smile more at Yoongiā€™s antiques as he slowly but surely made himself more comfortable around the company, handling small white collar tasks and getting less squeamish at every prototype Jungkook or Hoseok handed him without previous notice.
ā€œYou really invited me to dinner beforehandā€ Along with the responsibilities of being a head of management, came work trips, which were initially a you thing until Yoongi came along and now had to take responsibility as well, so naturally you had suggested to himā€“after a lot of rain checks on your dealā€“ that this work trip would be perfect for you two to give the new toys a try.
ā€œIā€™m a true gentleman, Y/N I donā€™t know what youā€™re talking aboutā€
ā€œMin Yoongi youā€™re about to absolutely ravage me after thisā€
ā€œY/Nā€ his cheeks coloured a pretty pink as he tried to stifle a giggle by taking a sip out of his wine.
Even though it was hard to tell from first glance just what type of lifestyle Yoongi was accustomed to, it certainly became very visible as he navigated effortlessly through the menu with all the french names on it, swiftly ordering for both of you and being delighted at your reactions when the hors d'oeuvre came out, a soft smile on his face the whole time. Whether it was the soft buzz of two cups of red wine over dinner or having the chance of relaxing after a particularly busy week, it made you start gravitating towards Yoongi more than usual. It really was no secret that you found him attractiveā€“you had even told the man yourself. And although you two had somewhat friendzoned each other, the awkward glances, blushing smiles and lingering touches certainly held more than what any of you two could express after barely a month of knowing each other.
Getting Yoongi to your hotel room was the easiest part, a faint blush on the apples of his cheeks as he gazed longingly at your held hands while you dragged him along after leaving the elevator. The kiss was unexpected but certainly welcomed, the way that Yoongiā€“ the man that you had come to know for always being adamant on trying new thingsā€“ looked so out of his element yet was willing to give it a try instead of running away like many times you had seen him do at work. The kiss was brief, a bit shy and probably out of all the built up tension in the room, your heart swelling at the gesture before you leaned in and captured his lips once more.
ā€œWell this is certainly the first time someone has dined me, wined me and courted me before fucking me into next weekā€
A laugh escapes his lips, nothing like before, his eyes turning something dark within them as he lowers his voice and his fingers play with the strap on your shoulder, letting it fall down before his lips latch on the base of your jaw ā€œWell what type of assholes have you let fuck you into next weekā€
A breathy moan escapes your lips as his mouth travels down your jaw to your clavicule, pressing you against him where you could feel his cock hardening, your hand coming down to trace the clothed length as he sharply breathes in ā€œYou know, maybe if you end up being good with the toys Iā€™ll let you fuck me with this insteadā€
He groans loudly, head hitting the wall as you grip him inside his pants ā€œJust fucking give me the dildos already so we can get on with itā€
You both move to the bed, losing your dress in the way and positioning yourself nicely as you take out the box engraved with the companyā€™s name on it before he trails behind you, feeling his cock twitch at the image he was greeted by, legs spread open, head against the pillows as your right hand leisurely strokes your already wet folds for him to see.
Yoongi tries his best to take deep breaths as he takes a look into the box, not recognising most of its contents ā€œYou really gotta walk me through theseā€
He can hear you laugh the way you always did when you noticed him being awkward in the slightest at work ā€œLook, Iā€™ll get the part going okay?ā€ your hand stopped stroking your folds, fingers coming up to your mouth, licking them clean before going to grab a small bullet vibrator from the boxā€“ a classic you had become well acquainted with during your time working at the company.
The small object comes to life with a practiced twist on its body, buzzing against the air a few seconds before tracing the tip all over your folds before settling it on your clit, a gasped moan escaping your lips as you blindly fetch the glass dildo inside the box, cold surface sending a thrill down your spine as you slowly begin to insert it messily from being focused on not loosening your grip on the small vibrator. Warm hands remove your own from the clear object as you feel warm breath against your exposed skin, the tip of Yoongiā€™s tongue circling around your right nipple, capturing it between his teeth as he brings the tip of the glass penis inside and out of your cunt playfully a few times before deciding to bottom it out, earning a moan from you. Pumping the dildo a few times, his weight is suddenly shifted from the bed, movements halting and you prop yourself onto your elbows just to throw your head back in pleasure as you feel Yoongiā€™s mouth on your cunt, tongue lapping up your juices before he inserted the dildo once again, lewd sounds taking over the small room as he continues to fuck you and eat you out at the same time, you feel your thighs start shaking when he stops his movements, smirking at your surprised face, gaze fixated on you as he takes out both a set of ben wa balls and a rabbit vibrator, prompting yourself to explain both of the toys when he cuts your off ā€œOh I do recognise these two from the labā€
He quickly turns the rabbit vibrator on, wasting no time in fucking you with it as deep as its second vibrating tip allowed him to, the design effectively sending a wave of pleasure against your already worked up clit. Yoongi positions himself comfortably on your side, still fully clothed, hand at a slightly awkward angle so that he can reach down all while having open access to nibble at your skin, having you gasping and moaning under him
ā€œY-Yoongi I-!ā€™m-ā€ he throws a wink your way as you clench around nothing, impending orgasm long gone ā€œYou fuckerā€
Heā€™s about to pick up the ben wa balls placed carelessly on the bed when he discards them in favour of a small silicone gadget that catches his eye ā€œYou were very much eager to try all of these thoā€ turning to you, all red faced and fucked out ā€œWhat is this?ā€
You have half a mind to answer him ā€œItā€™s a finger vibrator you just place it on your fingers like a gloveā€
Thereā€™s a brief glint in his eyes before he lowers himself again on the floor, easily manhandling you so that he had full access to your already dripping cunt, leveled to his face, cleaning you up with his hot tongue before he experimentally inserts his fingers inside you, vibrations making you instinctevely try and close your legs, to which he only chuckles and playfully bites the inside of your thigh. He quickly starts scissoring his fingers, gentle nibbles to your clit scattered between pumps, working you towards your previously cut short orgasm at a fast speed, walls clenching around his fingers as he separates himself from your core in favour of replacing his tongue for a mechanical sucking motion that you donā€™t even need to look down to know that he had reached for yet another toy inside the box ā€œYoongi- oh God- Yoongi p-please Iā€™m-ā€
You moan loudly, pretty sure that if the rooms in your vicinity were occupied, they were most likely already filing a noise complaint, as you feel your whole body spasming by the force of your orgasm, feeling wetness around yourself, out of the corner of your eye you can see Yoongi smirking at you, the upper part of his sleeves wet from working you until you squirted on him. You canā€™t even begin to process the situation or really come down from your high as you feel Yoongiā€™s fingers carefully inserting what could only be the last toy. Your cunt seems to gape before clenching yet again as he works each of the rounded toys inside you, a mix of feeling too much yet not enough, dabbing between pleasure and feeling uncomfortable from the overstimulation taking over you for as long as Yoongi took his time inserting them all ā€œGod I canā€™t wait to see if youā€™d take my cock as well as you take these balls Y/Nā€
Youā€™re about to respond with something snarky when he starts to slowly pull at the string of the toy, the ben wa balls coming out one by one, stretching you deliciously, a moan escaping your lips before Yoongi proceeds to start the ritual all over again. A sensation in your lower tummy aching for your climax buildup again and you could already tell it was going to be a long night.
Tumblr media
Falling back into a comfortable, bantering routine was easy enough, if anything, that fated sleepless night followed by small giggles from Yoongi everytime you shifted uncomfortably on your seat at the meeting the next day, served the purpose of shifting your relationship towards a more relaxed sexual tension between the two, instead of the awkward one from before, lewd jokes thrown around as well as shameless flirting around the office when you thought no one was watching.
ā€œLook what Jungkook just came up withā€ you said as you barged into his office a Monday morning, Yoongi almost choked on his coffee as you threw the artifact his way
ā€œAnd I seriously hope this is a you thingā€
You rolled your eyes at him, a smile stretching on your face as the sweet idea of revenge took over your thoughts ā€œItā€™s an us thingā€
His eyes seemed to want to escape their sockets at that ā€œYou gotta take me for dinner before you even plan on using that on meā€
ā€œTell you what, Iā€™ll feed you afterwardsā€
ā€œDealā€
Tumblr media
The office usually went quiet and lonely at around a quarter to seven, people from all sectors filtering out after a dayā€™s worth of work, with you being the only human left on the building afterwards, that is, until Yoongi started working there, the man tended to stay for even longer than you did, the lights inside his office filtering to the otherwise dark place. You knock three times on the wooden door before entering Yoongiā€™s office, finding him hunched over his desk, some document open on his desk as he stares intently at it. You make your way towards him, hands kneading his shoulders to relieve tension, a pleasured groan escaping his lips as your lips bite teasingly his earlobe.
ā€œThe ever so romantic Y/N about to fuck me in my own officeā€
Your hands travel down to the expanse of his chest until they reach his belt, where you struggle a bit to get it undone. ā€œI really just couldnā€™t wait any longer, could you blame me?ā€
Yoongi is quick to capture your mouth with his in a heated yet chaste kiss. He rolls his chair out of its original position to allow you to place yourself in between his legs, hips coming up just a few inches to allow you to bring his suit pants down to his ankles, half hard cock twitching in the cool air, your hand wrapping around it and pumping it a few times, to which Yoongi groans loudly, head thrown back as you lick a strip all the way from the base to the tip.
ā€œOh god Y/Nā€ he can almost feel himself twitch in pleasure as he gazes down just in time to watch you slip him insid eyour mouth, lips wrapped prettily around him as you bob your head a few times before taking him out and giving his tip a few kitten licks ā€œOh-Oh I swear to fucking god youā€™ll be the death of meā€
You take more of his length in your mouth, ravishing in the way that Yoongi responds, hand coming down to rest on your head, guiding you, yet not forcefully enough as you take a small set of rings from your bag laying around as soon as you feel him tense. You expertly maneuver the toy so that it is wrapped around his cock, him looking down and shivering at the cold metal touching him, constricting his cock to stand proudly as you move to straddle him, moving around a little so that his exposed cock grazes your clothed core under your skirt ā€œI think you should stand up for meā€
Yoongi does as he is told, not a word coming out of his mouth as he braces himself against his desk, one of your hands works on his cock as the other one comes down to his asshole, surprised enough to come across a bejewelled toy nestled inside it. You experimentally tug at it, Yoongi hanging his head low with a moan before you tease him a little with it, repeating the motion ā€œSo you prepped yourself for meā€
He inhales sharply at your ongoing movements, biting down on his lips to keep a much louder noise from coming out ā€œShut upā€
ā€œNo I think it's hot" you finally take the plug out, taking a few too many seconds to place the strap on you had thrown his way earlier on before moving to squirt some lube on it as well as on Yoongiā€™s hole before you tease it with the tip of the dildo, a broken moan coming from Yoongiā€™s mouth at the feeling, although it had been yearsā€“ and he really wasnā€™t about to admit he was looking forward to having you fuck him ever since that sleepless night at your hotel room.
Your hips meet his in a faint and comfortable rhythm, Yoongi clutches his fists tighter every time you graze his prostate, cock leaking in front of him as he feels his orgasm building at a rapid pace before you completely remove yourself from him, bending down to put his pants in place, hand fumbling with the zipper so as to have his still ringed up cock standing still through the pants, forcing him onto his chair as you smile wickedly at him, a small set of electrodes being placed along his length, thin cables leading up to a small device you held in between your fingers.
He gasps as soon as he feels the electrodes vibrating against his cock, his faded climax coming back tenfold, something between a groan and a moan coming out from the back of his throat as you refrain yourself to just continue to watch him curiously ā€œLook at you, such a pretty babyā€
Yoongiā€™s moans keep getting louder by the second as you increase the level on the toy, and you certainly have to thank the universe for the whole office building being completely empty as you clearly see his cock twitch a few times before he cums all over his pants, Yoongiā€™s breath is ragged as his cock is unable to go soft, discomfort blending into pleasure once again as you keep the toy on for good measure, until you see his eyes watering, to which you hastily make your way to him, as he almost dissolves against the chair.
ā€œItā€™s- itā€™s fine, Iā€™ll clean myselfā€ his voice is raspy and kind of quiet as you make sure to clean him the best that you could after removing the toys and running to his private bathroom for some towels.
ā€œYoongi, Iā€™m not about to leave you after splitting your ass open and overstimulating you into oblivion, youā€™re not even sitting properlyā€
He makes a go at inhaling sharply before coming to fix himself on the chair ā€œNo itā€™s okay, Iā€™ve had worseā€
ā€œYoongiā€ you chastise, fixing him a glare
ā€œSummer 2013ā€
You chuckle at thatā€“the very much recurring inside joke of his. ā€œWhat even happened in summer 2013?ā€ He barely opens his eyes just to send an irritated glare your way ā€œYeah Yeah, we donā€™t talk about summer 2013ā€
Tumblr media
Carefully selected dates under the pretense of trying out whatever new gadget Jungkook and Hoseok came up with during the month soon turned into weekly meetups, meetups turned into staying the night that soon enough turned things as official as they could beā€“ if Human Resources were the ones asking, Yoongi and you were just really great friends, end of the story. Out of all the ways that Yoongi had initially thought this scenario could play out, it certainly wasnā€™t this one.
ā€œIā€™ll see you at home once the meeting is over then?ā€ you say after placing a kiss on Yoongiā€™s adorable pouty lips, gathering your documents and thoughts for the meeting you were supposed to already be at. He nods right as your knees buckle, feeling the small device inside you pick up in speed, turning to the culprit only to find him smirking at you ā€œYoongiā€
ā€œLove you!ā€ the little shit is quick to pretend like he hadnā€™t done a thing, eyes quickly fixated on whatever that was showing up on his screen as he watched you leave his office. Guess youā€™ll just have to get revenge on that one.

Abuse and how it plays into Identity in Tower of Nero
While abuse has played a role in previous Trials of Apollo books, and in the Greco-Roman main series as a whole, Tower of Nero digs into it most deeply.
Identity and recovery from abuse are deeply linked here, with much of the abuse recovery coming from forging an identity separate from the abuser.
Previously it mostly came up in The Hidden Oracle and The Burning Maze, with Megā€™s relationship with Nero prompting Apollo to examine his own relationship with Zeus.Ā
Apollo knew in the back of his head that Zeus was abusing him, that his rage against the Cyclopes for creating the lightning bolt Zeus used to murder Asclepius, for instance, was him redirecting his anger onto a safer target because raging against Zeus directly was so unsafe, but he tried not to let himself think about it too much, and he tried to fool himself into thinking that Zeus DID care about him, that he loved him, at least enough that heā€™d help him if he saw him in trouble.Ā
Seeing Meg with Nero, how he manipulated her, how he subtly blamed her for anything bad that happened around her, for anything HE did, while trying to seem gentle and kind; seeing the abuse he went through reflected in this young girl led him to cope with his own abuse better.Ā
His experiences with abuse, with Zeus treating him as a scapegoat andĀ ā€˜forcingā€™ him to punish Apollo if he stepped out of line, with his own feelings about the abuse and his own coping mechanisms and behavior as a result, are a useful reference for understanding and helping Meg through her experiences with Nero.
And helping her cope, separate, and try to grow after being manipulated by Nero for so long? Helps him come to terms with his own experiences.
Heā€™s pretty explicit about the comparisons too. Like when Meg talks about how Lu used to help her pretend to kill people for Nero, helped her how she could, but Apolloā€™s mostly just horrified that Lu stuck around and didnā€™t take Meg and run... and yet part of him understood.
And are you any better? taunted a small voice in my brain. How many times have you stood up to Zeus?
Okay, small voice. Fair point. Tyrants are not easy to oppose or walk away from, especially when you depend on them for everything. (TON 57)
Lu may not have been quite as dependent on Nero as say, Meg - at least psychologically. Luā€™s not a child by any means.Ā
But Luā€™s only immortal because Nero is, and he can, presumably, revoke that. Nero provides her employment, a home, probably her entire social circle, AND he has the power and the will to go after her and anyone she cares about if she strays, if she tries to defy him.Ā
In those ways, her situation mirrors Apolloā€™s even better than Megā€™s does - and while heā€™s angry at her for not defying Nero, he also understands.Ā
I suspect part of his anger and suspicion at her is also anger and suspicion of himself, for falling into a similar trap.
Still, though Lu has her own baggage with Nero, Megā€™s is focused on a lot more, with how sheā€™s grown and changed, and her desire to hang onto who sheā€™s become while separated from Nero, to hang onto her own identity and personality and not what Nero attempted to shape her into.Ā
Itā€™s to the point that she can barely comprehend who she was under him, how she used to think, what she did.
ā€œI betrayed you once,ā€ she said. ā€œRight here in these woods.ā€
She didnā€™t sound sad or ashamed about it, the way she once might have. She spoke with a sort of dreamy disbelief, as if trying to recall the person sheā€™d been six months ago. That was a problem I could relate to. (TON 114)
Meg hasnā€™t really changed at her core as much as Apollo has - as much as sheā€™s gone through, she at least wasnā€™t much of a jerk in the first place. Well, relatively speaking, when compared to Apollo. Sheā€™s abrasive, but not much beyond that.
But she HAS changed, in large part BECAUSE sheā€™s more able and willing to stand up for herself in ways that she couldnā€™t do remotely safely while with Nero. Sheā€™s broken free of his psychological hold.Ā
During The Hidden Oracle she was ALREADY rebelling against him, she refused to burn the woods, but... well, she DID go with him, DID believe she could change him for awhile.Ā
But she broke free after realizing he wouldnā€™t, escaped and returned to Apollo, freeing herself from Neroā€™s grasp once more.Ā
For her, I think the difference between who she was six months ago and who she is now has less to do with her actual personality and worldview - those havenā€™t actually changed all that much throughout the books - but just in being free, somewhat safe (well, safer emotionally at least), and genuinely cared for. To not be under Neroā€™s influence to the same extent.
With Apollo... well, itā€™s a bit different with him. Zeus wasnā€™t as controlling as Nero, Apollo COULD have kept his space from him before; his sister has been doing that for millennia. But he has still changed a lot, moreso than Meg did, to the point that heā€™s almost unrecognizeable from who he was when he first fell to earth in THO.
Newly experiencing kindness, regular affection, and just having other people care about him though? He shares that with Meg.
Not that people have never been nice to him before, thatā€™s not the case. But to have people be nice to him who he wouldnā€™t think would need to be, when heā€™s vulnerable... thereā€™s a reason heā€™s been extremely touched when thatā€™s happened even back from THO, and in this book he breaks down pretty much every time.
Meg struggles with needing to retain her independence, the new sense of herself sheā€™s acquired during her journey with Apollo.
ā€œI have to go back,ā€ Meg insisted. ā€œI have to see if Iā€™m strong enough.ā€
Peaches cuddled up next to her as if he had no such concerns.
Meg patted his leafy wings. ā€œMaybe Iā€™ve gotten stronger. But when I go back to the palace, will it be enough? Can I remember to be who I am now and notā€¦ who I was then?ā€
I didnā€™t think she expected an answer. But it occurred to me that perhaps I should be asking myself that same question.
Since Jason Graceā€™s death, Iā€™d spent sleepless nights wondering if I could keep my promise to him. Assuming I made it back to Mount Olympus, could I remember what it was like to be human, or would I slip back into being the self-centered god I used to be?
Change is a fragile thing. It requires time and distance. Survivors of abuse, like Meg, have to get away from their abusers. Going back to that toxic environment was the worst thing she could do. And former arrogant gods like me couldnā€™t hang around other arrogant gods and expect to stay unsullied.
But I supposed Meg was right. Going back was the only way to see how strong weā€™d gotten, even if it meant risking everything. (TON 114-115)
Meg needs to keep her identity sheā€™s created for herself away from Nero. But her question about remembering to be who she is now versus who she was back then fits Apolloā€™s conundrum better, something that is clearly not lost on Apollo.
I knew my anxiety about my own weakness was getting mixed up with my anxiety about Meg. Even if I somehow made my way back to Mount Olympus, I didnā€™t trust myself to hold onto the important things Iā€™d learned as a mortal. That made me doubt Megā€™s ability to stay strong in her old toxic home.
The similarities between Neroā€™s household and my family on Mount Olympus made me increasingly uneasy. The idea that we gods were just as manipulative, just as abusive as the worst Roman emperorā€¦ Surely that couldnā€™t be true.
Oh, wait. Yes, it could. Ugh. I hated clarity. (TON 225-226)
Megā€™s captured, being fully under Neroā€™s influence once more, with him trying to twist everything to be Apolloā€™s or Megā€™s faults, trying to twist it so that every bit of distress that he puts Meg through is somehow the fault of her or her allies.
She picked up the chair and threw it across the room - but not at Nero. It whanged off the window, leaving a smudge but no cracks. I caught the flicker of a smile on Neroā€™s face - a smile of satisfaction - before his expression fixed back into a mask of sympathy.Ā ā€œYes, dear. This anger comes from guilt. You led Apollo here. You understood what that meant, what would happen. But you did it anyway. That must be so painful... knowing you brought him to his end (TON 235)
This kind of manipulation is Neroā€™s trademark, he uses it for most of the book. Telling Meg what sheā€™s feeling, telling her that sheā€™s feeling this way because of something wrong SHE did, not because of the horrible things NERO did. Trying to rewrite her reality to fall in line with what HE wants her to believe, to think.
Nero makes her change clothes, has her scrub up, even has her get a pedicure.Ā
Normally this would sound like a good thing. But itā€™s just one of the ways he tries to rewrite who she is, to break her sense of identity and replace it with one more to his liking. By taking away things that showed her own personal style, he took away reminders of who she is, as well as showing his ability to exert control over her, make her believe she has no choices.
My heart broke. Meg looked elegant, older, and quite beautiful. She also looked utterly, completely no longer herself. Nero had tried to strip away everything she had been, every choice sheā€™d made, and replace her with someone else - a proper young lady of the Imperial Household. (TON 285-286)Ā
Nero continues to try to twist the circumstances, to brainwash Meg into believing that heā€™s her savior and Apollo and the others may harm her. But Apollo keeps protesting, leading to this scene:
I tried to contain my horror. ā€œMeg,ā€ I said. ā€œThereā€™s only one person you need to listen to here: yourself. Trust yourself.ā€
I meant it, despite all my doubts and fears, despite all my complaints over the months about Meg being my master. She had chosen me, but I had also chosen her. I did trust her - not in spite of her past with Nero, but because of it. I had seen her struggle. Iā€™d admired her hard-won progress. I had to believe in her for my own sake. She was - gods help me - my role model. (TON 293)
Ultimately, MEGā€™S the one who decides. Who fights back. Because she was able to listen to herself, to not be twisted by Neroā€™s lies and deceptions.
ā€œI didnā€™t kill my father,ā€ she said, her voice small and hard. ā€œI didnā€™t cut off Luā€™s hands or enslave those dryads or twist us all up inside.ā€ She swept a hand towards the other demigods of the household. ā€œYou did that, Nero. I hate you.ā€ (TON 295)
This was the tipping point. When she announced, to herself and everyone else, the truth. The reality. Rejecting Neroā€™s attempts to rewrite it.
Nero hissed. ā€œUngrateful child. The Beast-ā€
ā€œThe Beast is dead.ā€ Meg tapped the side of her head. ā€œI killed it.ā€ (TON 311)
I notice here she tapped the side of her head. Of course, she didnā€™t literally kill The Beast; Neroā€™s still alive after all.
But The Beast was a psychological trick Nero used on Meg, to make her separate him into two people; theĀ ā€˜niceā€™ stepfather, and The Beast that takes over and punishes if she misbehaves.Ā
SheĀ ā€˜killedā€™ it, because she killed the concept.
There was never a Beast.
There was only ever Nero.
And now that sheā€™s gotten out from under his thumb? She reasserts her own identity.
Meg had thrown away her sandals, braving bare feet despite the arrows, rubble, bones, and discarded blades that littered the floor. Someone had given her an orange Camp Half-Blood shirt, which sheā€™d put on over her dress, making her allegiance clear. She still looked older and more sophisticated, but she also looked like my Meg. (TON 323)
I like the emphasis on how she looks older, but also like herself. She looks like what Nero made her into still, in a way - sheā€™s still wearing that dress after all - but sheā€™s made it her own, integrated herself into it.
It nicely parallels Apolloā€™s own situation, with needing to integrate who heā€™s become as Lester, who heā€™s grown to be, with his godly identity. Because things WILL be different once heā€™s a god again; heā€™ll have power he doesnā€™t have now, will have exposure to other gods that he doesnā€™t currently have. So he needs to figure out how to handle that, how to be a god, how to be Apollo while not losing what heā€™s gained as Lester.
Even if I survived, I would not be the same. The best I could hope for was to emerge from Delphi with my godhood restored, which was what I had wanted and dreamed about for the past half a year. So why did I feel so reluctant about leaving behind the broken, battered form of Lester Papadopolous? (TON 327)
Like Meg was, Apolloā€™s struggling to get ahold of his own identity before he has to face his abuser again, has to re-enter that old toxic environment. He fears that if the trappings ofĀ ā€œLesterā€ are destroyed, then like with Nero changing Megā€™s clothes, that heā€™ll lose part of his connection to who heā€™s become.
As Apollo fights Python, his mortal body becomes less and less mortal, bringing him into an in-between, in-flux state that mirrors his internal identity crisis.
ā€œYOU CANā€™T HIDE!ā€ Python bellowed. ā€œYOU ARE NO GOD!ā€
This pronouncement hit me like a bucket of ice water. It didnā€™t carry the weight of prophecy, but it was true nonetheless. At the moment, I wasnā€™t sure what I was. I certainly wasnā€™t my old godly self. I wasnā€™t exactly Lester Papadopolous either. My flesh steamed. Pulses of light flickered under my skin, like the sun trying to break through storm clouds. When had that started?
I was between states, morphing as rapidly as Python himself. I was no god. I would never be the same old Apollo again. But in this moment, I had the chance to decide what I would become, even if that new existence only lasted a few seconds.
The realization burned away my delirium.
ā€œI wonā€™t hide,ā€ I muttered. ā€œI wonā€™t cower. Thatā€™s not who I will be.ā€ (TON 339-340)
Like with Meg before, heā€™s deciding, affirming for himself what kind of person he is now, who he wants to be, different from who he was before.
Even during the fight with Python, some small part of him hopes Zeus will intervene, will see heā€™s done enough and help him, save him. But here, that instinct is quashed for the final time.
I had done my best. Surely, Zeus would see that and be proud. Maybe he would send down a lightning bolt, blast Python into tiny pieces, and save me!
As soon as I thought this, I realized how foolish it was. Zeus didnā€™t work that way. He would not save me anymore than Nero had saved Meg. I had to let go of that fantasy. I had to save myself. (TON 341)
Much like with how Meg hoped back near the beginning of the series that Nero really would change, really was a good person deep down, Apollo kept up the hope in early entries that Zeus DID care about him and would come to save him at any moment. And even in later books, heck, even in THIS book, with Meg still calling Nero her stepfather a few times and the part of Apollo hoping that Zeus will intervene now, itā€™s hard to break the desire, the belief that that person who SHOULD care about you, surely will now.
But both of them break past that. Meg calls Nero out, rejects his attempts to rewrite reality, and Apollo kills the idea that Zeus might intervene on his behalf.
By the time Apolloā€™s a god again, he has a firm bead on the kind of person Zeus is, as well as the type of environment Mt. Olympus is, with most of his family just watching his trials and tribulations, everything he and his friends went through, and betting on the outcome. Only Artemis and Hera seemed to take things seriously, seemed to deeply care whether he lived or died.
Not that the others could have interfered against Zeusā€™s wishes.
As much as we pretended to be a council of twelve, in truth we were a tyranny. Zeus was less a benevolent father and more an iron-fisted leader with the biggest weapons and the ability to strip us of our immortality if we offended him. (TON 366)
Apollo just kind of hangs back for the council session, having little to say to anyone except Artemis, not caring much about what the other Olympians thought, and not really feeling like one of them as a whole. Though that was true even before he actually walked into the room.
I remembered my dream of the throne room - the other Olympians gambling on my success or failure. I wondered how much money theyā€™d lost.
What could I possibly say to them? I no longer felt like one of them. I wasnā€™t one of them. (TON 358)
And finally, the long-awaited confrontation scene with Zeus. It wasnā€™t long. It wasnā€™t flashy. Unlike Meg, he couldnā€™t attack and get rid of his abuser, couldnā€™t get out from under his influence entirely. Zeus is King of the Gods; realizing that heā€™s an abusive asshole doesnā€™t change that.
But he COULD change his own response to the situation.
My father coughed into his fist. ā€œ I know you think your punishment was harsh, Apollo.ā€
I did not answer. I tried my best to keep my expression polite and neutral.
ā€œBut you must understand,ā€ Zeus continued, ā€œonly you could have overthrown Python. Only you could have freed the Oracles. And you did it, as I expected. The suffering, the pain along the wayā€¦ regrettable, but necessary. You have done me proud.ā€
Interesting how he put that: I had done him proud. I had been useful in making him look good. My heart did not melt. I did not feel that this was a warm-and-fuzzy reconciliation with my father. Letā€™s be honest: some fathers donā€™t deserve that. Some fathers arenā€™t capable of it.
I suppose I could have raged at him and called him bad names. We were alone. He probably expected it. Given his awkward self-consciousness at the moment, he might even have let me get away with it unpunished.
But it would not have changed him. It would not have made anything different between us.
You cannot change a tyrant by trying to out-ugly him. Meg could never have changed Nero, any more than I could change Zeus. I could only try to be different than him. Better. Moreā€¦ human. And to limit the time I spent around him to as little as possible. (TON 367-368)
Apollo just... let go of any attachment to Zeus. It reminded me of the Cumaen SIbyl, with how she forgave Apollo for her own sake, how Apollo felt that he himself was being erased by that.Ā
This isnā€™t a reconciliation; this is simply Apollo putting Zeus as far behind him as possible and trying to let him take up as little space in his life as he can. He may not be able to cut all ties to him, but he can at least minimize his connection to him, his influence over him.
In the end, Apollo doesnā€™t even really consider what he went through to be a punishment; not really.
To be honest, though, I could no longer consider my time on Earth a punishment. Terrible, tragic, nearly impossibleā€¦ yes. But calling it a punishment gave Zeus too much credit. It had been a journey - an important one I made for myself, with the help of my friends. I hopedā€¦ I believed that the grief and pain had shaped me into a better person. I had forged a more perfect Lester from the dregs of Apollo. I would not trade those experiences for anything. And if I had been told I had to be Lester for another hundred yearsā€¦ Well, I could think of worse things. At least I wouldnā€™t be expected to show up at the Olympian solstice meetings. (TON 373)
Like with his conversation with Zeus, heā€™s minimizing Zeusā€™s control, his influence over himself and his life.Ā
And in the end, Apollo leaves Mt. Olympus as soon as he can to spend time with all the new friends heā€™s made, away from the toxic influences of Olympus and of Zeus especially. Reaffirming his new identity, his new self by appearing in his Lester form, the form heā€™d grown in, that heā€™d forged for himself.
I just really love how in-depth Tower of Nero went, especially with the way it emphasized the identity manipulation and erasure involved with some kinds of abuse.

Kieran Shepard - Character Profile
(Systems Alliance vector by Deviantart User Karlika)
I got extremely carried away so letā€™s go under the cut
this only goes thru about the halfway point of Mass Effect 2 right now because Iā€™m still working thru the game! Iā€™ll update it when Iā€™m done with ME2 and after ME3 probably.
Pre-Mass Effect 1
Kieran Shepard was born on Earth and grew up in the slums of Chicago. She was shuffled around various foster and group homes for her childhood, and the only sense of stability she knew was in the gang she was recruited to at a young age, the Tenth Street Reds. She was part of the "Clubs" suit of the organization, specializing in hitting hard and fast. She was outfitted with her biotic amps by the gang to make her more effective in close quarters combat. She grew up very distrustful of law enforcement and authority in general.
After a job went south when she was 16 and she ended up tied up in a homicide, she was given the option by the courts to go to prison or go to an 'alternative education' school funded by the Systems Alliance. It was her first taste of structure outside of the gang life, and she adapted to it better than expected, eventually falling in line with the Allianceā€™s way of doing things despite her initial resistance to trusting the authority of a large military organization. Upon her graduation at 18, she joined the Alliance military. She served under Captain Anderson on the SSV Tokyo, and was one of the Alliance marines on leave when the Skyllian Blitz hit Elysium. Leading the charge to defend the colony and using her years of experience of fighting dirty and coordinating disparate people in the Tenth Street Reds, coupled with her military education, she and the colonists beat back the invaders and she was awarded the Star of Terra.
After this point, Kieranā€™s dedication to being the Perfect Alliance Soldier intensified; there were eyes on her now, and expectations to meet. The impostor syndrome began setting in. She fought back against it by overworking herself to be better than the best, taking even the slightest mistakes as evidence she was worthless and going to be discovered as the fraud she was. This only got worse when Captain Anderson hand picked her to be his XO on the SSV Normandy.
Kieran kept a fairly stiff outward appearance and did her best to emulate Captain Anderson, thinking this was what was expected of her. Despite this, she, Jenkins and Joker managed to develop a sibling-like banter while the Normandy was being prepped for its first mission.
Mass Effect 1
Eden Prime was her first mission officially having a command, Elysium having taken place before she was promoted. Losing Jenkins so quickly was terrifying, proof that she wasnā€™t fit to be here. But, no time for that, she carried out the mission, recruited Ashley, was sucked into the Beacon, etc. No one seemed to blame her for Jenkinsā€™ death, which only served to make her feel more fraudulent. Like now that she had authority, there was also a lack of appropriate consequences. Her old disdain for authority tried to breach above the water, but she forced it back down. She found some solace in Kaidanā€™s logical, clinical way of explaining things, including Jenkinsā€™ death; it helped the Subjective feel more Objective, and she came to trust his opinions.
The Councilā€™s reaction to Saren was, as it is for all Shepards, infuriating. Again, her old reasons for distrusting authority had one moreĀ ā€˜pointā€™ in their corner. Still, she did her best to stay in line, to be the Soldier she needed to be, and eventually to be the Spectre she needed to be. Losing Captain Anderson to politics, though, shook her. Before, she had at least someone higher than her on the food chain to turn to when she was in over her head. Now, she was on her own.
She came to lean more heavily on Kaidanā€™s advice during this time, and on Joker for levity. She didnā€™t take well to Garrus; his history as a cop and constant complaints that red tape kept him from getting justice doneĀ ā€˜his wayā€™ smacked of crooked cops on Earth. Still, when they clashed, he tended to back down and consider what she said. She enjoyed Wrexā€™s company, though, his old war stories reminding her of the senior members of her gang on Earth. She also enjoyed her talks with Ashley and Tali, the former because of her candor-- Kieran could at least be sure Ash was always honest with her--and Tali because she was the only person on board who seemed as out of place as Kieran felt. Plus, Taliā€™s a delight, who wouldnā€™t like her? She was fairly ambivalent to Liara, not sure if she viewed her as more of an extension of her Prothean research as a person, and they had their fair share of awkward conversations, but thereā€™s no malice there.
Kieranā€™s next Major Event takes place on the Citadel, when a member of the Tenth Street Reds tries to blackmail her into using her newfound power and influence to release one of their own from prison. In the time since she left, they became an even more outwardly xenophobic organization, which rubs her the wrong way. Doing her best to be a Model Soldier, she immediately reports him to C-Sec, leading to a confrontation. In the heat of the moment, Kieran panicks. Her past is a matter of public record, but she canā€™t have him dragging her thru the mud, spreading lies, hurting her reputation and the Allianceā€™s. Her position is too precarious. Theyā€™ll find out that sheā€™s a fraud, even if heā€™s lying. She shoots him, intending it as a warning, but killing him on the spot instead. (I wrote more about this here when I played that part of the game!) The Turian cop is impressed. Kieran is horrified, both by her actions, and by the copā€™s approval of her killing him in cold blood. She returns to the Normandy and throws up.
Iā€™m fudging the canonical timeline a little bit here, but I think this event is what leads into Kaidan telling Kieran the story of how he killed the TurianĀ ā€˜teacherā€™ on Jump Zero as a way of helping her contextualize what just happened. They Bond. The rest of the game unfolds without too many more Major Character Moments that are unique to Kieran versus All Shepards. Wrex survives Virmire, Ashley doesnā€™t. Ash becomes the second to die under her command, the first to die as the result of an explicit choice she made to save the man she has feelings for. The guilt threatens to rip her in half, but we have a galaxy to save, so she does. She manages to talk Saren into realizing he is indoctrinated, but itā€™s too late for him. She leaves the council to die on the Destiny Ascension, not willing to risk losing firepower to use against the Reaper, and is infuriated when the political spin on the story becomes that she wasĀ ā€˜protecting human interests over galactic onesā€™. She does not understand why the lives of three politicians should outweigh thousands of soldiers or millions of civilians on the Citadel, and she never will.
Having never trusted Udina, Kieran nominates Captain Anderson to lead the new council. She spends the ensuing months cleaning up pockets of geth resistance with the Normandy crew before getting spaced by the Collectors, as all Shepards do from time to time.
Mass Effect 2
Kieran wakes up in a Cerberus facility and is horrified. She ran into Cerberus plenty in Mass Effect 1, and her impression of them is bad to say the least. After fighting her way through the facility under siege and being horrified by Mirandaā€™s actions killing Wilson, she heads to Freedomā€™s Progress, all the while trying to figure out a way to get out of this, even tho she suspects The Illusive Manā€™s statements that sheā€™s free to do as she pleases to be lies. No one invests that much without expecting returns, or demanding them. Her only solace is in Joker, who at least seems not to have changed much, and Dr. Chakwas. She tries to communicate to Tali on Freedomā€™s Progress that she doesnā€™t want to be here, tries to get her to come along for the mission, but at least for now, she canā€™t. She goes to Captain Anderson on the Citadel to try to bring the mission to the Alliance, the Council, anything to get away from Cerberus, but he cannot help her. Her old crew is unavailable, Kaidanā€™s location is classified, she canā€™t get messages out to any of her old crew without risking Cerberus reading them and someone has to stop the Collectors.
Even though the two had never been close, she is elated to see Garrus on Omega, in as bad shape as he is. At least heā€™s a familiar face and someone who doesnā€™t trust Cerberus. She bonds with Zaeed for similar reasons to Wrex; she likes his old war stories and he reminds her of the people she grew up with. And, he doesnā€™t treat her any differently because of her status. Sheā€™s still guarded around Jacob and Miranda, she doesnā€™t trust EDI, and she immediately gives Jack access to all of Cerberusā€™s files. The two donā€™t exactly get along, but they at least have hating Cerberus and their colorful backgrounds in common. Grunt at least is easy to understand for her; prove youā€™re strong, and heā€™ll respect you. Good enough for now.
Horizon hits Kieran like a truck. Seeing the Collectors in action is traumatizing enough; then she sees Kaidan, who sheā€™s been wanting to talk to since she woke up, who she hoped would understand that sheā€™s trapped, and he lays into her for a situation she feels she cannot control. He says she betrayed the Alliance, betrayed him, wonders if their relationship meant anything to her. Sheā€™s stunned. Until this point, the fact that she was gone for two years never really felt real, never sunk in. But now itā€™s undeniable. Itā€™s changed her, itā€™s changed the people she cares about, and she feels like she truly lost everything. Even after getting his follow up email (which I highly recommend listening to the voice actor read), Kieranā€™s mental health is in shambles. Itā€™s not enough to undo her self doubt spiral. He thinks sheā€™s a bad guy now? That sheā€™s a traitor? Fine. No point in fighting it, then. (To be clear, I personally donā€™t blame Kaidan at all for Horizon, nor Shepard, itā€™s just a shit situation, but Kieranā€™s self esteem is SHOT)
Kieran starts getting reckless in the ensuing missions. She starts taking a lot more renegade actions, in a gameplay sense, things she would never have done when she was trying to be the Perfect Soldier. Now, everyone already thinks sheā€™s out of control, and she falls back into old habits. If everyone already thinks youā€™re bad, itā€™s easier to just become what they say you are.
Iā€™ve only done Mirandaā€™s loyalty mission so far, and the first exception to her current downward spiral into Renegade is Niket. His logic reminds her of Kaidan, as does how Miranda describes their friendship; she tells Miranda not to shoot, has a brief moment of clarity that oh, yeah, killing someone you were friends with is traumatizing, probably. Donā€™t do that. She and Miranda bonded a bit over that mission, I think; she still doesnā€™t like Cerberus, but she likes Miranda, and I think that counts for a lot for her.
Thatā€™s as far as I am in the game at the moment! Her current attitudes to the rest of the crew are: Jacob she is indifferent to but respects his honesty; she doesnā€™t like or trust Mordin due to his treatment of the Krogan and the sense of racial superiority over the Krogan; she likes Kelly and the engineers fine; she has a respect for Jack even if Jack doesnā€™t like her; she likes Garrus more now that heā€™s not so into hisĀ ā€œjustice by any means necessaryā€ bit but weā€™ll see how his loyalty mission goes; she likes Kasumi; she is really glad to have Tali back, esp because sheā€™s SO OUTWARDLY HOSTILE TO CERBERUS and itā€™s great; she likes Grunt and views Zaeed as kind of a fucked up father figure; she likes and trusts Chakwas and Joker; jury is still out on Thane but she at least can see he does his job well; and she CANNOT STAND SAMARA. Might end up going with Morinth on this playthru!
If you made it this far, holy shit, why???? Also thank you!!

Okay so partially motivated by how many references there were in SPoP and largely bc it's been in my backlog for years and I remembered the whole thing got uploaded to youtube a while ago, I finally got around to watching Revolutionary Girl Utena for the first time so time for some hot takes
Tumblr media
2 clarify I did see the movie about around 2000 which was my introduction to the series, and I did see like 1 episode back in anime club (over a decade ago now tbh) but for the most part I went into this with only a vague sense of the ending and offhand knowledge of a few of the weird comedy episodes so this was mostly a blind watch
Before getting into #spoilers I will say that this ended up being an easy Top 5 and that it's definitely still worth watching (fair warning for the very frequent rape and incest (and sometimes both)), especially if you've somehow also avoided most of the context of this show like me, and it really is one of the rare Nothing Else Like It kind of show (though it has roots in older shoujo like Rose of Versailles and modern stuff like Revue Starlight have picked up its lede)
Okay spoilers from here on
I really only kinda have vague memories of the more knightly take on Utena from the movie so Series!Utena having this powerful Dumb Jock Energy threw me
Like she's out here invoking the Air Bud Rule from minute one
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This bit where Akio is going on about some Important Life Lesson thing and she's just fuckin
crab walking im
Tumblr media
what a hero i love her
I have always kinda been more partial to shoujo than shounen bc the sense of like emotional urgency and the heightened exaggerated feelings are just more compelling to me narratively and what Utena does spectacularly is really drive that to fucking 11 and it permeates every aspect of the show
Like the melodrama of it all is so shameless and it's so committed to letting its visuals and music drive the mood and emotional intensity of its stakes that they kind of speak for themselves and demand to be taken on their own terms rather than having clear or rigid interpretations
Like it's kind of a situation of "yes most of what you're seeing ties into the show's bigger themes and characterization but also you can just vibe to the spectacle as well" like even when it's not on the Dueling Arena there's a theatricality underlying everything that pairs perfectly with the spirit of shoujo even as it... not necessarily contradicts it, but challenges it in some ways and also wants to coexist with it?
And I think that's the interesting thing how it wants to tackle some of these arch concepts tied into the genre while also being deeply intertwined with it. Ā Like it really is a Product Of Its Time in so many ways but it also feels somehow timeless and transgressive in others even now?
Like part of me would be interested to see a remake that took into account 23 years of conversation about how much perceptions of gender and sexuality have changed but at the same time would it lose some essential part of itself in that transition? Ā idk potentially
Also lbr a hypothetical remake wouldn't even attempt to revise anything it would just redo it thus making it pointless
So I know this has been a thing that's been brought up before but seeing it play out dang RGU and NGE really are just companion pieces to each other huh
Subverting the themes and narrative arcs of their respective genres, mysterious quiet girl who's directly the key to everything, the ritual of action setpieces rendered as Actual Ritual in the story, banger OP, comphet ruining everyone's lives
Also they really don't have much in common comparatively but I'm definitely seeing pieces of Utena in Kill la Kill too? Ā Particularly how Mako's arc feels like a fleshing out and expansion from the archetype divergence Wakaba got in that one ep (I can't believe klk was the utena/wakaba au fanfic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of which damn he is a sleazy bastard and a gross predator but ngl Akio can Get It he and Ragyo are basically the same character and I guess this is just my type apparently???? oops
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I'm recognizing how like really awful he is but also you really can't blame Utena for crushing on him he is super hot and charming
aside i lost it at the audacity of "well even tho i am a man like twice your age (AT LEAST) and took advantage of the situation and also i am clearly not the type to take no for an answer since you didn't reject me you're basically just as bad as me" bruh
The Black Rose Arc is... interesting bc like it borders on superfluous with how it resolves and yet the introduction of a "monster of the week" type power rangers element specifically built to expand on the secondary cast is a pretty inspired choice
again my primary point of introduction to the series was the movie which is basically a remix of the Student Council arc so when I got to 12 I was like wth are they gonna fill the rest of this with? WELP
What I really like about it is that usually this kind of setup-- the 'character is faced with their dark inner thoughts they shy away from and they become a short-term enemy' deal-- ends with the char in question coming to terms with this and overcoming it to become a better person
but here it's just like... they lose and then they just gotta... sit with that, forever. Ā Like it doesn't really change the status quo of their relationships w/ utena or the others but it does just stick around for them and now the audience knows that about them too. Ā like sometimes you just can't take that shit back.
Utena's relationship to queerness, having heard about it tangentially for years but seeing it play out now is also interesting bc while in the grand scheme it doesn't feel necessarily any more ahead of its time than something like Cardcaptor Sakura there is a casualness to it that's distinct
Like for the most part it's either kind of the tangential fluff that even then was part of shoujo as a standard but then there's also stuff like the Akio/Touga or Touga/Saionji hinting or Kozue's casual pass at Anthy in addition to the maintext Juri/Shiori push-pull and ofc the subtext-but-maintext Utena/Anthy threads
I wanna take a moment to talk about Juri bc of how kind of in the spirit of the show itself it plays things both with and against the grain with her
Tumblr media
Like she's a Tragic Lesbian which is nothing new but usually this character type (and Distinctively Lesbian characters in general) in anime/manga tend to be portrayed as being very predatory, invasive and either played for laughs or to repulse the audience, so the degree of empathy RGU shows her in 97 is rare to see even now. Ā
Like there is a "safeness" to her bc of how unattainable Shiori is (though their arc ends in a decidedly ambiguious way), but it doesn't really feel like she's getting the short end of the stick over the more straight-leaning characters bc arguably all of the relationships here are defined by an aspect of chasing the unattainable, echoing Utena's own quixotic search for her Prince, and her choosing to remain closeted feels realistic *especially because* of the surrounding context of how heteronormative the world she exists in is.Ā  Like the character is aware of that and is navigating it in a way that feels honest
Speaking of which it's interesting how the reveal of Juri's pining for Shiori in Ep 7 echoes the bigger reveal of Utena/Anthy bc of how it plays up this heterocentric love triangle or at least it seems to be but then the cards are on the table and no that's really not what it is at all, and it feels significant that after spending most of the series naively oblivious to Juriā€™s feelings and what she wants out of a relationship with Shiori that Utena finally Gets It in Ep 37
Is it a coincidence Juri actually gets to be the one to point it out? No
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of triangles big ups to the Ruka/Juri/Shiori one honestly bc of how hard it commits to the unknown third result of a LT where absolutely no one comes out happy and it actually works even with the handicap of Ruka basically coming out of nowhere just for these two episodes
Like all three of them want the one person who's absolutely never gonna love them back and that's just rough buddy and isn't that kinda the show in a nutshell
So the thing that struck me about Utena/Anthy and how it plays out is how subtle it really is. Ā And that does make sense bc while f/f teasing/subtext again was part of shoujo before it's quite a different thing for the heroine to ultimately reject her 2 male love interests and choose a life with her female best friend, esp in nineteen ninety seven
Like I think you can argue that Ep 12 feels like The Moment where What Their Relationship Is, Definitely shifts and that possibility is suddenly there, and then it doesn't come back in a big way until the ending but there are tiny glimpses throughout where you can see that working in the background if youā€™re really paying attention
Small things like Anthy's flashes of unspoken jealousy, Utena fretting over her even when she's in bed with Akio, and part of that is coming from going in with a knowledge of what the endgame is and keeping an eye out for it. Ā I can hardly imagine being a viewer during the og broadcast and then ep 34 comes and suddenly the intent is made clear and our understanding of the inciting incident gets all flipped turned upside down
And to a modern viewer I can get coming into this for the first time and being frustrated at just how close to the chest it gets played, but that's also kind of the only way it gets to happen at that point in time? Ā But I think it ultimately is effective and vital to their individual arcs and dovetails nicely with the themes of the show
Like I remember hearing that original manga creator Chiho Saito was pretty against their paired ending, but with a lot of convincing from Ikuhara ultimately came around to it, and it's hard to imagine the anime's ending working any other way and being nearly as impactful
And there is something really beautiful about the bucking against the established idea of yuri relationships being a childish concept that gets left behind in order to 'grow up' actually becoming the impetus of their own journeys into adulthood and eventually back to each other, and itā€™s hard not to feel a little disappointed that for this Bold Step and declaration for the future that RGU takes that while yuri is more common than ever it largely continues to exist within the realm of schoolgirls and something to be left behind in adolescence like for RGUā€™s faults and shortcomings it saw this world of possibility in moving forward, while the genre largely elected to stand still
Tumblr media
And it really speaks to either the timelessness of the show or how much the queer experience has remained constant that even with a tragic ending, that hope, or rather the promise of their reunion, feels bold and defiant and genuinely uplifting even now
Like the moment where just before they reach out to each other one final time, and their voices as children speak out to each other, as if finally fulfilling a promise they barely remember, I really did just start ugly crying
Lastly some assorted closing thoughts--
-Touga? Ā Punk. Ā Guy really takes advantage of Utena's whole prince thing to manipulate her, ends up losing to her in the rematch and then fucks off to mope for like AN ENTIRE SEASON then pops back up "oh yea im in love with her literally nothing else about my behavior has changed tho" like lmao you tried i guess
-Also i know Touga's design is p stock standard bishounen ojou-sama type but god this is all i can think about when I see him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Green Touga Saionji is a bitch-ass motherfucker but like he at least tried more than anyone else so uh that's something I guess?????
Like the guy clearly has some unresolved feelings about Touga so i'm inclined to be sympathetic bc wow poor choice my dude but also... bitch-ass motherfucker
-Nanami really went through this thing for me where it's like... she's a brat and a shitty person but it's also hard to really dislike her bc she does get what she deserves most of the time and also she gets kinkshamed more than most of the cast despite none of them really having a high ground over her lol
Tumblr media
-Miki did nothing wrong (aside from like the implied incest but that's also like... half the relationships in this show uh)
sidenote I can completely see the notable excess of Incest Subtext/Maintext being intended as like... A Thing to comment on how common it is within shoujo and also tying in to like the bigger themes of Growing Up bc the idea that youā€™re chasing after your own damn siblings betrays some freudian inability to mature or whatever but tbqh it doesnā€™t always feel like the show knows the line between commenting on this and indulging in it and RGU is very indulgent by its own nature so I really canā€™t blame people put off by the show as a whole bc this is an area where RGU is largely indistinguishable from its genre peers
-Juri really did nothing wrong tho also props for having the best duels
-FUCK SHIORI THO for eelĀ
so obviously i have not seen the show up to now but I've been in yuri circles for a long time so I knew about Juri/Shiori and my perception of it had always been "oh it's one of those kinda messy with complicated feelings" kinda ships where the drama is a big part of the appeal and that's true but like
the actual nature of it I did not realize up to now and OH SHIORI'S REALLY THAT BITCH HUH
So not only does she date that one anonymous guy specifically to spite Juri unaware she doesn't actually like him BUT THEN WHEN THEY GET REUNITED SHE'S JUST LIKE LOL IT DIDNT MATTER BUT HEY WE COOL RIGHT *AND THEN* when she finds out about Juri's feelings she's like HELL YEA I CAN HANG THIS OVER HER HEAD FOREVER FUCK HER
***AND THEN*** when she gets some karma after Ruka dumps her ass she airs her dirty laundry out in front of EVERYBODY like Juri hasn't been dealing with this shit like an absolute champ the whole time like?????
Like ok i get that there's the sad longing drama there and usually that's my jam and the show itself seems to end on kind of an ambiguous note and the follow-up manga from this year seems to leave it as kind of a "maybe" but I'm sorry get Juri a better GF 2020 she deserves better
I saw some Juri/Wakaba going through the tumblr tag for the show and honestly that's some big brain shit I'm here for it
Also now knowing exactly how this dynamic operates it really makes that Jasper/Lapis reference pic one of the SU crew drew of them read very.... interestingly???????? (tho Lapis' design reads a lot closer to Kozue and that's probably a closer personality analogue too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-I love that thing in ep 37 where the whole SC is just very casually like hey utena if the whole revolutionizing the world thing with anthy doesn't work out uhhh call me im free haha just kidding unless...? lmao
-I'm pretty uninclined to try to pin precise sexuality HCs to characters for series this old where the ambiguity is part of how its danced around like partly coming from my own experience I'm inclined to read Utena as bi but that really is just coming from me?
But on the other hand literally every time a guy is like "i love you utena come be happy with me and we can love each other forever" she's like "k" after having left them on read for a day and disconnects from them entirely so lesbian going through comphet is a pretty valid read i think lol
-Lastly I think itā€™s pretty interesting but validly frustrating how fast and loose the showā€™s relationship with dream logic and non-traditional storytelling really is like when the shadow girls show up I was likeĀ ā€œoh this is a greek chorus thing and itā€™s meant to reflect on the themes of the episodeā€ (or uh in the case of exactly Ep 29 to break from tradition and explicitly tell us what a characters deal is lmao) but then no actually turns out theyā€™re actually real characters who exist within the show too fuck you
ANYWAY I really did love this show and felt like I got a lot out of it despite it being pretty infamously hard to decipher but the ways it's inscrutable appeal to me specifically so very happy with this I'm gonna be thinking about it for a while

Ummm, I started this romance last year at some point and then put it away, as I often do. But now that the world feels super bleak (super SUPER bleak? whatā€™s the scale for everything sucks and I hate it all?) Iā€™ve decided to add this story to my list of things I want to finish soon-ish. (I mean, itā€™s me tho, so what does soon even mean?)
Anyway, if you want to read a preview of Alien Escape (erotic ffm) and meet Drea, a girl with big dreams and a plan to get as far away from her toxic parents as she can, read on!
CW: allusions to domestic violence and emotional abuse
Also, if youā€™re wondering if I really have face inspiration for an alien couple, the answer is yes. I do! Yā€™all should watch Star Trek: Discovery!
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Prologue Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā
Ā ā€œShut up!ā€
ā€œYou shut up! All you do is come in here and whine like a baby until you get your way.ā€
ā€œWhen have I ever gotten my damn way in this fucking house? I work my fingers to the boneā€”ā€
ā€œWhere? When? Doing what?ā€
ā€œOh, fuck you! Someoneā€™s gotta keep food on the table in this damn placeā€”ā€
Thatā€™s about when I tune them out. My parents have the same fight every three to four days, like clockwork. Itā€™s not really about anything, or not about anything specific; they just like to fight and really dislike each other. Mom hates living in Ohio, and sheā€™ll never forgive dad for moving us out here. Dad hates living in Ohio too, but he refuses to admit that this was ever his idea. Moneyā€™s tight. Thereā€™s nothing to do. Neither of them can keep a job. Somehow, this is all my fault.
Different day, same bullshit, and why I donā€™t bother listening.
We all learn things from our parents, and mine taught me early and often that we all have lots of times in our lives when we can make decisions to not stay with people we barely know and canā€™t stand. My parents had more roads to escape than most.
My life as I know it might never have happened if their casual fling ā€” without birth control, because dad didnā€™t believe in it ā€” hadnā€™t turned into an unexpected, but obviously expected, pregnancy. That could have been a wakeup call, followed by a visit to a Planned Parenthood and an important life lesson learned, except mom was from a hardcore born-again family and didnā€™t believe in birth control or abortions. She believed in premarital sex, though, so Iā€™m still trying to make sense of that faith system, but the damage was done. The damage being the mess those two made of my childhood because, even though they could have decided to co-parent or something, they apparently felt compelled to stay together. Why? Iā€™ll never know, and Iā€™m convinced they donā€™t know, either. My earliest self-realization wasnā€™t ā€œThis fucker took my nose!ā€, it was ā€œMy parents see me as a burden.ā€ Can you imagine? Being barely old enough to sit up without wobbling and knowing, somehow, deep in your bones, that the two people who should love you unconditionally, donā€™t? Itā€™s not a great life, just in case you need to see it in black and white. To my parents, I was just another mouth to feed, the thing that kept them bound to this person they hated more each day. Their entire relationship and my entire existence were just one bad decision after another, and the soundtrack to my entire life has just been this same argument.
They bickered all over New York in the almost-identical shoebox apartments they could just about afford, during our road trip West and ever since we settled in Akron. They donā€™t even like each other enough to shake up these knock-down, drag-out fights. Maybe a cheating accusation here, or a ā€œWho ate the last piece of chicken?ā€ there, but other than that, nothing.
The most interesting part of my life was that year just before they finally decided to move to Ohio. Dad had tried to feed me and mom some fairytale about how life would be different here ā€” fewer people, better housing, more trees, less pollution and a stronger family unit. I never believed it, because in each of the yarns he spun, I was still with them ā€” both of them ā€” and thereā€™s no happily ever after with them around; not for me, at least. But mom had been swayed, and next thing I knew, we were in a beat-up Ford truck, the entirety of our belongings packed precariously in the bed and heading West. Ā Surprise of all surprises, none of dadā€™s stories had been true.
Well, okay, let me be fair. There are technically fewer people in Akron than the Bronx, and the house weā€™ve been renting since we arrived is bigger than those small New York apartments, but besides that, my parentsā€™ dysfunctional relationship and my shitty life are business as usual.
There were more trees when we got here, but Iā€™m not giving dad credit for that since most of them were cut down about a year after we arrived to make room for the new pipeline running right through our backyard. Thatā€™s why the rentā€™s so cheap.
My parents fight about that, too.
The move wasnā€™t a Band-Aid to their relationship, and it certainly didnā€™t make my life better ā€” not that anyone was worried about me ā€” and as far as my parents are concerned, every problem in their life is my fault. They fight about it regularly and then circle right back around to being united against me, and thatā€™s why as soon as mom banged the pot of spaghetti on the kitchen table, I scarfed down my portion and excused myself immediately.
Their problems arenā€™t my fault, I know that, but thereā€™s no reasoning with them. Itā€™s best to just disappear. I headed upstairs to my room with a mumbled ā€œhomeworkā€ and waited. Once I heard them start sniping at one another, I did what I always do and climbed up to the attic and out onto the roof. This is the only place where I feel safe, emotionally, if not physically. If Iā€™m being honest, I really shouldnā€™t be up here. Itā€™s slippery, and a bunch of the tiles are a good gust of wind away from falling off, but if my choices are inside my parentsā€™ house and up here, the roof wins every time.
Out here, thereā€™s enough space to escape my parentsā€™ incessant fighting. The late spring air is a marked change from the stifling, probably not-quite-safe gas heat in our house. On a clear night, I can stand on the eastern edge of the roof and see all the way downtown, not that thereā€™s much to see there. I mean, I can see the marquis of the Burger King where I work, but Iā€™m not interested in that, so I usually look in the opposite direction. Thereā€™s not much to see there either, just a few farmhouses surrounded by large fields and the pipeline. Ā
But Iā€™m not looking at any of that. I put my earbuds in my ears, turn my music up as loud as it goes and lay back on the roof to stare at the clear, dark blue sky. Sometimes, I haul my sketch book up here to draw, or pull my old astronomy textbook out and try to identify the constellations, but whatever I do, I say a prayer that my singular wish will come true. All I want is to get as far away from my parents as fast as I can.
My classmates are preparing for college, and lots of them want to enlist, but my only real goal post-graduation is to get away. Iā€™ve worked out any number of escape routes up here. Instinctually, I know that I canā€™t just move to Columbus or Detroit. Those cities arenā€™t far enough away, and Iā€™ve long been worried that my parentsā€™ obvious co-dependency means that I need to put some serious miles between us if I want to have a chance at real freedom.
I toyed with the idea of leaving the country, but Burger King money doesnā€™t stretch nearly that far. Right now, Iā€™m making just enough to give my parents one of my checks a month to help with household bills ā€” and keep them off my back ā€” and split the second between my cellphone bill and savings account. After three years, I have enough money saved to absolutely get the fuck out of Akron in exactly six months on my eighteenth birthday, and I plan to do exactly that, but Iā€™m still working out the kinks in my escape route.
Iā€™ve done the math, and I can either buy a decent used car or a plane ticket to California. Every time my dad comes home and tells mom that his paycheck was docked for calling in or mom hides yet another online delivery from dad, Iā€™m tempted to go for the plane ticket, but I usually talk myself down from that impulse because Iā€™m sensible, unlike my parents. Even though the thousands of miles away from here is attractive as fuck, I know that once I get off that plane, Iā€™ll be broke as hell.
On the other hand, the rusty Honda Civic I have my eye on at the used car dealership downtown is sensible. It has less than 100,000 miles, good mileage, and if push came to shove, it could double as a temporary home. It wouldnā€™t be a six-hour plane ride to California, but Iā€™ve got enough money that I could put some real distance between my parents and myself and have enough to really start the rest of my life.
But when Iā€™m up on the roof, I also have another secret fantasy. Itā€™s not real, but when my parents are really loud, and I worry that the yelling and crashing might turn to the sound of fists hitting skin and bone, I dream of space. Forget California or Tokyo, I wish I could go to the moon or beyond. Thereā€™s a tiny, terrified girl inside me that knows in her bones that the only way to really escape my parents is up above me. Sometimes, I lay back on the roof and imagine what it would be like to know that I was far enough away that Iā€™d never have to hear my parents wake me up arguing again. Itā€™ll never happen, but some nights, daydreams of flying up into the sky are the only things that make me feel safe enough to fall asleep. But just like with San Francisco, I bury that deep inside myself and calculate how many shifts I need to work to have the full price of the used Honda. The sky is my fantasy, just like Ohio had been my parentsā€™, but that Honda Civic is the real path to freedom.
The sound of glass breaking hits my ears in the quiet between two songs, and I jump at the shock of it. I tap my cellphone screen to pause my music. I pull the earbud from my left ear and listen, trying to figure out which part of the argument theyā€™re at now.
ā€œDo you feel better?ā€ dad yells at mom.
I roll my eyes, shove my earphone back into my ear and press play on the music again.
Mom likes to break dishes when sheā€™s really frustrated but trying to hold it together; itā€™s why the few dishes we have donā€™t match. I suspect sheā€™s gonna drag me to the Goodwill tomorrow to look for a replacement for whatever sheā€™s broken, and I canā€™t have that. I pick up my phone and tap out a quick text message to my boss, Peter. In a plea that heā€™s very familiar with, I tell him that Iā€™m available to cover any shifts tomorrow. Peterā€™s a good guy, and I know that heā€™ll do what he can to get me a shift, even if itā€™s just a few hours or closing. Iā€™ll take it, and he knows I will. Iā€™ll also immediately put whatever extra money I get directly into my savings account and readjust my timetable to purchasing the Honda and getting the fuck out of here.
The music builds to a crescendo and mercifully drowns out my parentsā€™ screaming as I look back up at the sky.
On nights like tonight, the moon is so clear and big that I swear itā€™s close enough to touch. I stretch out my right arm above me, squint one eye closed, tilt my head to the left and pretend to capture the moon between my thumb and forefinger. I smile for the first time in what feels like hours, maybe even days.
And then I see it.
While Iā€™m looking, a small speck in the sky moves across my vision, only visible because it passes the light of the full moon. At first, I think itā€™s a distant star, or maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. I blink, and something in the sky moves again. Whateverā€™s up there, itā€™s too far away to see clearly, so I sit up, trying to make sense of it all. Itā€™s moving too slow to be a shooting star and too fast to beā€¦well, literally anything else. I pull my earphones from my ears, as if it will sharpen my vision. I stare up at the speck thatā€™s now bigger, closer; close enough for me to realize that the one speck is actually a cluster of distant lights. Iā€™m not looking at a star or a planet but a constellation thatā€™s moving in formation towards me. Toward the Earth.
But thatā€™s not possible. I know that. I aced astronomy.
ā€œWhat the fuck?ā€ I whisper to myself.
As if in answer to my whispered question, those bright not-stars seem to move faster and get bigger in the large pane of sky above my house as they get closer. The lights seem to fill the sky of this boring ass town with a pipeline running through it dangerously close to the local drinking water; this town my parents hate that I canā€™t wait to escape.
I shake my head and turn to the right. My eyes land on the pipeline cutting through the fields behind our house. I can barely remember a time when it wasnā€™t the first thing I saw when I woke up in the morning. Iā€™ve read dozens of articles about what it is and how much time itā€™s probably shaving off of my life. I guess the environmentalists were right and assume that thing must finally be leaking. It has to be. Because how else do I explain what I think Iā€™m seeing in the sky?
And when I tilt my head back to look up there, I gasp and jump to my feet.
In the handful of seconds when Iā€™d been looking away, those not-stars seem to have come closer. Like real close. Now theyā€™re so close that no one can mistake them for stars because no stars have ever been so damn clear in the sky or moved so fast. I watch as they get closer and closer, and then I shriek in shock as the constellation breaks apart.
If Iā€™m hallucinating this, whatever the pipeline is leaking is grade-A lethal shit.
The lights disperse so fast that I actually miss it. One second, thereā€™s a cluster of lights heading toward me, too many for me to count clearly. The next second, I blink. Then the next second, there are only five lights still above me, but I can see turquoise blue light streaks in the sky heading in thousands of different directions. And then in another second, those five lights begin to slowly move apart, still descending, closer to the Earthā€™s surface. Theyā€™re landing, I realize, and my mouth falls open.
ā€œFuck,ā€ I breathe as my mouth curves into a smile so wide it hurts.
Now that there are fewer lights and theyā€™re even closer than before, I can just about recognize whatā€™s hovering in the sky above me. Theyā€™re ships, and not space shuttles like the ones Iā€™ve seen in my social studies textbooks about the moon landing. These not-stars are huge, bigger than the biggest plane Iā€™ve ever seen in the sky, maybe even bigger than the entire town, and theyā€™re not US-made shuttles or like anything Iā€™ve seen of Russian or Chinese ships. These big, hovering ships look like theyā€™re covered in shimmering jewels, glittering as if reflecting their own sunlight. ā€œFuck,ā€ I breathe again. Ā
ā€œDrea, are you up there? Girl, get off the fucking roof, we canā€™t afford no emergency room visit. Do you hear me?ā€
I hear my dad yelling at me. I do. I just donā€™t give a shit, because thereā€™s an alien spaceship in the sky almost directly above our house ā€” an actual fucking spaceship ā€” and this is infinitely more interesting than him reaming me out for being on the roof again. Besides, I hear the moment when he sees what Iā€™m seeing and stops caring that I might stumble and fall off the roof. I hear the choked gasp that comes from his lips just before my mom bangs out of the front door, still yelling. I hear her words cut off when she sees the ship too, the final confirmation I need that Iā€™m not having a pipeline hallucination, but still, I donā€™t care. Ā
Because Iā€™m speechless. I know, deep down in my gut, that this ship is going to change everything about the world Iā€™ve ever known, and I canā€™t help but feel elated. My body feels light, as if I weigh nothing more than my fantasies. I swear I could float up to one of those ships, and thatā€™s exactly what I want to do. I want to bang on the door of a ship and beg them to let me in, because I can feel the surety along every inch of my skin that this ship is going to be my way out. This ship is going to get me as far away from Akron and my parents and that damn pipeline as possible.
My motherā€™s scream is a delayed response to seeing the impossible, and it rips into the quiet night. She keeps screaming and screaming, but dad and I are too mesmerized to stop her. Eventually, I hear our neighbors begin to file out of their houses, probably when they realize that momā€™s screams are different from their regular weekday fights. I hear them gasp and cry out. Babies are crying, and other peopleā€™s screaming joins momā€™s. Thereā€™s even the sound of the hurricane warning blaring out eventually, but none of those noises seem to touch me; not anymore. Itā€™s like theyā€™re far away because Iā€™m already gone.

thank you for tagging me @mylastbraincqlā€‹ !!!Ā
All right! Bearing in mind that today I am extremely flustered and extremely fond (partly due to a certain fic, but also just in general. Iā€™m in a good mood today. Itā€™s nice) and that there are 650 fics in my bookmarks on AO3, Iā€™m gonna try to keep this to a single fandom. And in honor of the lovely @mylastbraincqlā€‹ who tagged me, I will try to keep this to MDZS fandom of which I only, currently have 81 fics bookmarked (but I have a pile more in my TBR queue)
SO Letā€™s begin!
ā€œSlow Burnā€ or ā€œLove at First Sightā€ - Now donā€™t get me wrong, I have a fond place in my heart forĀ ā€œLove at first sightā€ fics too. But usually only in the context of slow burn mutual pining there after. so yes, fall in love quickly, but donā€™t do anything about it for a long time. But yes, love me a slow burn. This series is slow burning and super cute. This fic was also a beautiful slow burn.
ā€œFake Datingā€ or ā€œSecret Datingā€ - I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever really encountered secret dating? But fake dating, mmmm. Especially fake dating where they end up catching feels! (I know Iā€™ve read so many fics with this but I cannot find a single one right now, what the heck...)
ā€œEnemies Annoyances to Loversā€ or ā€œFriends to Loversā€ - Friends to lovers is super sweet, but, well, I prefer some darker emotions in my reading. Though I suppose there could be dark emotions there too... I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever really read it. Annoyances to lovers. Oh dear. This fic, I think, probably fits the trope best?
ā€œOh no thereā€™s only one bed...ā€ or Long-distance with correspondence - I love this trope. Itā€™s hilarious to me. Hmm... I donā€™t think Iā€™ve actually read all that much of it for this fandom, but it does come up in this fic.Ā
Hurt/Comfort or Amnesia - Donā€™t get me wrong, thereā€™s a lot of hurt comfort in amnesia, but I do prefer just straight up hurt/comfort. Like this fic, and this one.
Fantasy AU or Modern AU - Yes. All of the yes. gimme all of it. I love all of it. I love every single possible type of AU. I will read a million AUs! But here, lemme find some specific examples for this one. Fantasy & ModernĀ (I admittedly have more examples of modern than fantasy, but theyā€™re all so good! And Iā€™m only sharing one modern under this particular heading to make it fair.)
Mutual Pining or Domestic Bliss - Pining in general is just my jam, okay? Mutual Pining? *wheezes* I love it. It slays me every single time. I have so many freaking emotions about pining. I pineĀ for pining fics, you do not understand. Rip my heart out. This one is mild on the pining, but I love it.Ā Ā And hereā€™s one thatā€™s actually mutual pining like Iā€™m supposed to be giving examples of >.>;Ā
Smut or FluffĀ - So this one is actually a really hard choice for me? I donā€™t actually particularly like Fluff or Smut as far as fics go, but I am more likely to choose Smut over fluff. Largely in part because the higher rated fics tend to have story lines that I enjoy more. Iā€™m also a huge sap and get easily overwhelmed by fluff, so I try not to turn into a giggling goof too often. But anyway. Hereā€™s a Smut. and a Fluff. For your reading pleasure.Ā
Canon-compliant (missing scenes) or Fix-it fics -Yes! yes to both! Oh goodness, I love both of these ideas very much. I love when people expand on a canon in ways that still comply. I also love when they tweak things to make them work! CompliantĀ Okay, I admit, that one doesnā€™t quite fit the criteria because itā€™s technically a continuation instead of a missing scene, but Iā€™m counting it anyway. Fix-ItĀ This series is one of my fave fix-its. Largely because I just freaking adore Mo Xuanyu.
Alternate universe or Future fic - Both, both is good! I am weak for both of these. Possibly more for AUs but I will definitely get equally excited about both. Hereā€™s one of my fave AUs. And my fave future fic series.
One-shot or Multi-chapter - Honestly, I can go either way on this. It really depends on my mood and how much time I have. Though with this fandom and their propensity for one-shots that are over 20,000 words... But I do love it. Here is a painfully long, but absolutely gorgeous one-shot that I love.Ā and here is a kind of silly multi-chapter (thatā€™s actually shorter than the one shot) that I enjoyed thoroughly.Ā
Kid fic or Road trip fic - Oh I love Kid fics! Fics where the characters areĀ kids, or haveĀ kids. Either way. I love them very much. So many of my fandoms, this one included, do involve a lot of traveling in general, but thatā€™s usually in a more mission oriented sense. Iā€™m not really sure any of them would travel for the sake of traveling. (I canā€™t find any examples of the characters being kiddos in my bookmarks >.<) hereā€™s another where they have kids because itā€™s too cute
Reincarnation or Character death - Iā€™m gonna be honest, character death is just depressing for the most part. I will, sometimes, read very short fics involving it, but itā€™s not a favorite. Reincarnation fics however? Oh heck yes. (>.< I donā€™t think I have any examples of reincarnation fics tho)
Arranged Marriage or Accidental Marriage - I know that, like, accidental marriage is the name of the game in this fandom. And I do love it. Itā€™s hilarious. But arranged marriage AUs have a special place in my heart. This is one of my faves.Ā
High SchoolĀ College Romance or Middle-aged Romance - I have absolutely nothing against middle aged romance (heck, in this fandom thatā€™s practically canon) but I admit, younger romances resonate a bit more for me, and I am more likely to click on them. (Probably because Iā€™m not too much older than those tropes 26, gods, itā€™s been years since I was in school, what the heck) Hereā€™s a cute little college AU.
Time Travel or Isolated Together - Ooo, this one is fun. In a sense, these two tie closely for me because thereā€™s a lot of... Overlap? or at least, a lot of potential for it. In general anyway. It usually doesnā€™t work that way, and certainly not for this fandom. Iā€™ll admit, I havenā€™t read any outright time travel fics for these lovely characters, yet. Iā€™m pretty sure I have a couple in my TBR. As for Isolated together, that has so much potential. I like it both in the sweet ways and the angsty ones. This is the closest to a time travel fic as Iā€™ve read for this fandom.Ā And here is a cute littleĀ ā€œisolated togetherā€ fic.Ā
Neighbors or Roommates - These AUs are, yes. I love them very very much. Thereā€™s so much potential for them. I donā€™t technically have any recs that fit either of the above for this heading that I havenā€™t already linked, but... Hereā€™s a super sweet fic that they become roommates at the end of ^-^
Sci-fi AU or Magic AU - Give Me All The AUs. No, but seriously. I adore Sci-fi and magic. Now this fandom does make it a little harder for the magic AU because canon is technically magic, but! Itā€™s still a lot of fun to read. Unfortunately, the only Sci-fi au Iā€™ve read is already linked up under the Fantasy header (itā€™s both, hush). But here is my all time fave alternative magic fic for this fandom. (And it just updated the final chapter!!)
Angst or Humor - *cackles* oh goodness me. Angst. Angst all the way. If my heart feels like itā€™s being forcibly removed from my chest, itā€™s the best. Humor is... not really my cup of tea in general. I enjoy laughing, no doubt, but my humor is pretty dark so itā€™s way easier for me to be amused by an angsty fic than a humorous one. Here are some angsty fics that ripped my heart to pieces.Ā Ā
Tagging! @lepetiterik, @toddnyallison, @hunxi-guilai and anyone else who wants to play!. (you absolutely do not have to rec fics in this, I just got waaay over excited and wanted to share. let me know if anyone wants recs from any of my other fandoms)

I read your Spun Sugar Peace part 2. I liked the part introducing the forsaken and eventually Sylvanas to the Horde, the group dynamics in particular. Trust and everything aside, how do you think the different Horde leaders developed their working relationships with each other?
so I've been thinking about this question a long time, and how I should answer it, because tbh I knew upon recieving this that it's either going to turn into an entire goddamn essay, or even another fic lmao
I think a lot of their working relationships develop firstly centered around thrall, because this is sort of an instance where everyone knows thrall but no one else, and thrall is essentially bringing them together to be one cohesive group. it turned out to be pretty effective, to the point where even though these people really have no business knowing each other let alone being allies, they're actually decently good friends. it's partly why all the leaders were really hurt, almost betrayed at the notion of thrall leaving during cata, and not only leaving, but leaving someone in charge who would seemingly go against all of that and split them up again. which, he sort of did, unintentionally, but everything that happened to garrosh was a two-way street and I'm not gonna get into that rn because that's another can of worms entirely.
anyway, what thrall essentially does is make friends w/ each of these people individually, and then p much invites them all to hang out at the same time. they're kinda unsure of each other, but hey, their friend said they're okay, and they trust their friend, so they're probably okay. I realize that's a really simplified answer and that obviously it's not gonna go that smoothly, but by the time everyone is friends individually, that's essentially what it boils down to, is that thrall treating each of them with respect and civility where they'd previously had none is kinda what prompts them to trust him and pay it forward, as it were. let's be for real, here, everyone on the horde is on the horde because they in some way shape or form got the shaft and had nowhere else to go, so him setting this example of respect and gentility despite the admittedly wildly different and sometimes contradicting cultures/customs is what leads the others to do so, as well. besides thrall setting the example to pay kindness forward w/ people who've probably gotten treated like shit a large portion of their lives, it'd probably be more on an individual basis how each of the leaders work it out. soooo let's take it from the top, I guess
(fair warning, SUPER long post behind the cut, w/ quite a bit of theorizing/headcanons)
let's start w/ sen'jin and vol'jin, since technically the orcs hooked up w/ them before they hooked up w/ the tauren. vol'jin I would see as sort of wary of joining up w/ the horde at first, since it didn't really go so well the first time around w/ the amani. sen'jin is probably wary, too, but is more willing to take a chance, partly because they don't really have a choice at first; it was either accept the horde's offer of help or die at the hands of humans and naga. so, tl;dr sen'jin gets captured by murlocs under the control of naga, thrall & the orcs and trolls do their best to break out of the prison they were put in and save him, but bottom line, sen'jin is really old and really hurt so he's not gonna make it. he just short of begs thrall to take the darkspear w/ him away from the isles so they can get away from the danger. so w/ that in mind, I can see vol'jin taking a super long time to trust anyone, really, including thrall, for pretty understandable reasons. trolls don't really have a good track record of hooking up w/ other races besides trolls, or even hooking up w/ other trolls in general. it doesn't tend to work out for them, because they've got a long history of violence and suspicion for anyone outside their particular tribe, partly because they're you know, inherently violent and suspicious on account of their societal environment, and partly because tbh, their chieftains as a whole don't really have a good track record of not taking advantage of this to further their own political gains and continuing that culture of violence and suspicion. which leads me back to thrall and vol'jin's relationship.
thrall sort of goes against a lot of these expectations, in that he's in a position where he could very easily advantage of them and, vol'jin's experience dictates that he absolutely will- it's why the darkspear fled stranglethorn in the first place. so for him to be put in this position of power and not only not take advantage of them but also treat them as equals if not as friends, would be a really weird experience for vol'jin, and one that he would take a very long while to warm up to, because you know, experience dictates that thrall is absolutely going to take advantage of the darkspear, it's just a matter of when and how. but it just never happens. that time never comes. I think what really seals their friendship is when zalazane decides to stir shit up, and the darkspear get kicked off their fucking island, again, and the orcs just open their arms to them without a second thought. like thrall and the horde have been handed every opportunity to screw them over on a silver fucking platter, and he just won't, for some reason, like it's not even a thought in his goddamn head, whereas w/ vol'jin, if given that opportunity, probably would've considered it at the very least, if only to keep his own tribe safe. honestly I see this happening as him and thrall are sitting in grommash hold trying to figure out where the darkspear can live now that they got kicked off their goddamn land for the third fucking time and he's offering for them to stay in Org and a switch suddenly flips, and vol'jin's like, "oh. this guy genuinely gives a shit about us. huh." and goes from being sort of standoffish and cold to the smartass asshole friend that picks on u for fun but is also ur ride-or-die and would probably also commit murder in cold blood for u.
the tauren go wayyyy easier, considering that they're like. the one horde faction that doesn't have a social environment that promotes suspicion for everyone outside your immediate clan/family group and killing as a legitimate, even common means of solving political problems lmao. no, they're pretty straightforward in comparison to the other horde factions, and even act as a fucking sponsor for the whole ex-villains support group they got going on. so yeah, cairne and thrall buddy up pretty quickly, cairne sort of slipping into a mentor role for thrall almost immediately. thrall collects dad and teacher figures, that;s just kind of a thing that happens in canon, and here's one that's actually emotionally accessible, particularly because cairne's already been there, done that; don't remember if it's canon but p sure the man has a fuckload of kids and grandkids. he knows what's doing. so yeah, orcs and tauren are fast friends because of similar lifestyles and a mutual need for help from each other, tauren needing help w/ getting the centaurs to fuck off and orcs needing help fucking off from their previous enemies that just won't let them fucking leave, for some reason
so anyway, cairne and vol'jin: you'd think they'd be fast friends b/c of the same reason thrall and cairne are fast friends, right? nope. Vol'jin is a goddamn adult. don't get me wrong, Thrall is an adult too, but he's like, barely 24 atp and hasn't really had a proper father-figure for like, 22 of those years, so obviously thrall's gonna warm up to cairne real fast. vol'jin, however, is the troll equivalent of being in his 30s, probably. I can't really give an actual number estimate because iirc a recent Q&A referenced trolls having about the same lifespan as bloodelves or dwarves (which is 200-300 years iirc), it's just that they rarely live that long because trolls tend to keep fuckin killing each other before they reach that age. and honestly even if I remembered that wrong I still sort of headcanon trolls being that long-lived anyway, because that's the only way that vol'jin remembers being in stranglethorn makes sense, because the darkspear got kicked out a ways back. anyway so, like I said before, vol'jin is gonna have a hard time trusting anybody, because experience dictates that at some point he's just inexplicably going to get fucked over. however, cairne being an actual reasonable person and treating vol'jin w/ respect probably helps smooth things out. like it's not gonna get him anywhere quick, but it's helping, at least. then, when finally vol'jin realizes "oh fuck wait these people actually give a shit about me & my people," that's when he starts to warm up. what probably helps is that they've got quite a bit in common. they've got similar lifestyles and problems, tho tauren tribes aren't as nearly as antagonistic as troll tribes are, probably because they've got bigger problems and quite a bit more space to roam, but it's still the mentality of putting your tribe first, and getting harassed by neighbors with a lot more strength than you have.
also I like to think that they've got a bit in common in the way of having large families- this is mostly headcanon on my part, but I'm p sure that like cairne, vol'jin has a pretty large family. I see trolls viewing polygamy + polyamory as acceptable, and while for a while there it was pretty deeply rooted in patriarchy sort of shit, like how it still kinda is back in stranglethorn, nowadays w/ the darkspear it can go either way, like you can have multiple wives & husbands and you just live on a homestead on the same property. like no one has to live all in the same house b/c that's crowded as shit, but homesteads, w/ lots of little houses, are okay. anyway the point I'm making is, vol'jin canonly has at least one kid, reportedly his "youngest son" (yenniku), and we have no idea where he came from, as well as he for some reason still being in fuckin stranglethorn when we the players go and find him. so I'm saying that vol'jin probably has like, idk, 2 wives and quite a few kids. he and the 2 wives are all married to each other, so it's not just them being married to vol'jin. anyway vol'jin's kids get along w/ cairne's kids, and that plus the both of them getting along w/ thrall, leads them to becoming friends ala "maybe we should get to know each other better b/c our kids are friends and we have a mutual friend." like w/ them it's very organic. most of cairne's relationships are very organic in their formation, because he's actually a pretty stable person.
sylvanas entering the picture is when things start to get complicated, because just entering the scene, she's got a lot of things working against her: she's a high elf, ex-alliance, undead, and ex-scourge. everyone is initially wary of her upon hearing of her, and for good reason. she knows this too, and she knows it's justified, even though she's pretty justified in being upset about it. I actually had to look up how the forsaken came to join the horde, because like?? I feel like it's not really addressed in game, because by the time vanilla starts, they're already a part of it. it's partly why I wrote spun sugar peace to begin with, because there's just so much shit that isn't covered in game that apparently happened. anyway so apparently, according to what canon I could find, it was the tauren, specifically the druids and hamuul runetotem, that vouched for them. and honestly, that's really interesting to me that it was the tauren that went "oh nooo poor baby come here let me take care of you" because from what I could find, what really makes the tauren take them in is the forsaken trying to cure themselves of this really really awful condition. like the forsaken reached out to a lot of the horde factions after things went sour w/ the alliance, and while the orcs and trolls were like idk about this guys, the tauren took them like like they were rain-soaked kittens sitting out in the cold, and I think it's in part because of their lack of history together, unlike the orcs and trolls who have quite a bit.
so after the tauren vouch for them and shit and thrall decides "ok let's give them a chance at least," this is where shit actually starts w/ sylvanas personally, because before everything was through emissaries and amabassadors etc. again this is where thrall's sort of paying it forward w/ respect and kindness come in, because I feel like when sylvanas came to meet everybody for the first time (probably when the forsaken were formally joining the horde) she showed up wary and w/ her own prejudices to deal w/ and preemptively pissed off because lmao alright let's see if this turns into a trainwreck like the last couple of things did, lookin @ u garithos
and she's kind of disarmed when thrall greets her like an equal and w/ the utmost respect and courtesy because ???? what the fuck. how the fuck is an orc respectful. what the shit. and honestly like, she wasn't really expecting much from orgrimmar- like she was expecting a city?? but not one this big and functional and holy shit, they worked fast. so everybody sits down in grommash hold and cairne pulls out her chair for her n shit and honestly it's just really nice just to be treated like a person?? it's been a really long time, holy shit. she's like, kind of baffled that it's coming from people who were her fuckin enemies like maybe a year ago, but like, fuck okay I guess this works. like they were the only ones who said "yeah okay let's be allies" so she don't really got a choice but like. this isn't actually all that bad. like it's wayyyy better than she was expecting it to turn out. like obviously she's not gonna call them friends, at least not immediately, but, friends are kind of hard for her nowadays, and being disarmed w/ this sort of kindness & respect really helps. like her friendship w/ thrall won't ever get particularly close, and their friendship probably mostly develops through being "work friends", but she does get to a point where she does actually consider them friends, and that's like, really big for her tbh. like she doesn't have to be on edge around him, she can just chill and it's okay. anyway sylvanas is also ride-or-die, because that's. kind of just how she does it, and kind of how the horde does it, so even tho like, she doesn't get particularly close w/ anybody at this point, she's still willing to do a hell of a lot of shit for the people that actually fucking took in the forsaken.
cairne she probably warms up to soon after thrall, because cairne and her don't really have any underlying history that would prevent them from trusting each other, and it's the tauren who said the forsaken weren't monsters first, that they're just people who got really really unlucky and need some help getting better. cairne again is another work friend, p much, but things are never really awkward between them in the way it can sometimes get w/ thrall and vol'jin. he's very sweet to her, in the way that nice old grandpas are, and tbh she really missed this sort of treatment/interaction. honestly? I think she'd actually be better friends, like actually-friends-outside-of-work friends, w/ baine. baine and her have a little more in common, I think; they both work hard, and they're both kinda quiet, usually, and I think that superrrr later one, like when sylvanas becomes warchief, she's really glad to have baine at her back, because he's super steadfast and loyal and is actually straightforward w/ her and as a general rule.
vol'jin and her interactions are interesting though, because trolls and elves have a list of grievances w/ each other a mile long, but again like, atp, the forsaken and the darkspear have a hell of a lot in common. both got chased out of their previous factions, both sort of fit that niche of sarcastic, violent misfit, and neither shy away from older, darker magics. they're not really friends for a while and mostly just put up w/ each other for the sake of the horde, but their interactions are interesting b/c they don't really have a reason to put up w/ each other, let alone like each other, outside of this. so they're sort of lowkey antagonistic w/ each other but they're not really picking fights so much as seeing how far they can go w/ each other before they hit the wall, the wall being accidentally poking a little too hard at a weak point, or thrall or cairne catching wise to their antics and telling them to stop. it becomes sort of a game for them, and it's actually fun for them, since they're weird fuckers that enjoy being mean for fun and this is a way they can actually do that without lasting consequences. like they do this b/c they're testing each other, keeping the other on their toes, and while thrall might wish they got along better or cairne rolls his eyes at them, they wouldn't have it any other way. this friendship works for them, and it should be noted that after a certain point they don't take too kindly to people joining their game. I can imagine that, further down the line when it's garrosh in charge and she and vol'jin are pissed at thrall for leaving them, garrosh tries to shit on one of them and the other is just Not Fucking Having It. like they pick on each other and it's okay because obviously they're still gonna put up w/ each other, but garrosh picks on them and fucking means it, and that's not okay.
honestly I could keep going w/ the other horde leaders, like lor'themar and gallywix and ji and baine etc. but uhhh I think I've gone on long enough lmao
